WHAT IS a legacy of teaching children how to handle legacies

WORTH?

According to a 2012 U.S. Trust survey,* less than 40% of adults believe their children will be prepared to handle an inheritance. Which is why we created the Financial Empowerment Program: to provide your children with all the insights, guidance and assistance necessary to help preserve and grow the assets they’ll inherit. And carry on the values that helped you earn that wealth. Find out what makes our Atlanta team uniquely suited to help with your legacy and estate planning needs.

We invite you to call Wendy Kopp, Market Executive, at 404.264.2820 or visit our Atlanta office at 3414 Peachtree Road Northeast, Suite 1475.

Authentic Ikat rug at high-end store: $7 ,OOO

Authentic Ikat rug at The Dump: $3 ,499

This is why we sell $lOO million worth of rugs. Two beautiful rugs. Made from the same hand-spun, hand-twisted yarn in the same village in central Asia. Imported on the same boat. But ending up in different stores. And the story of how they got there is the story of their price. We bought the one on the right directly, in person, for cash at about half the usual price, eliminating middle men and retail mark-ups. That’s how we buy thousands of fine, hand-knotted rugs at unheard of prices. And why we sell $100 million dollars worth of them at prices so low, other rug sellers buy from us. Handmade rugs from Persia, China, India, Turkey, and Nepal. The largest selection in Atlanta, all up to 80% off price. Beautiful rugs, beautiful prices, only at The Dump.

Selection varies by store.

WELCOME

Ahh, fall! It’s such a beautiful time in

Atlanta, but is usually jam-packed with so many things to do that the season is gone before you know it. Next up: Christmas! New Year’s! (Yes, I realize that I’m getting ahead of myself.) From football season to fashion shows, fall is peak season in Atlanta’s style and design circles. And speaking of jam-packed, this month’s issue is brimming with advice from some of the city’s leading tastemakers. They’ve opened their little black books to reveal their must-haves, mustsees and must-dos of the season (page 21). In our features section, designers John Oetgen and Betty Burgess take us on tours of recently completed projects (pages 48 and 62, respectively), while Bill Musso walks us through his personal garden (page 56), and William Peace and Malissa Ladd share special moments from their recent at-home nuptials (page 72). Wherever the fall season takes you, take time to enjoy it—every last second!

THE GREATEST JUST PERHAPS EVENT VENUE IN AMERICA

Foxhall6pgs.indd 2

8/14/12 11:30 AM

Is it really possible to be less than 35 minutes from downtown Atlanta, and 45 minutes from Buckhead’s Lenox Square/Phipps Plaza, and be in the most beautiful, manicured resort, sporting club, wedding and special event venue in the United States? Is it possible to find a destination location where you can really feel as if you are hundreds of miles from a major city and still be less than 25 minutes from the busiest airport in the world?

Foxhall6pgs.indd 3

above The sports lawn pergola and recreation area surrounded by the amphitheater, polo fields, golf driving range and equestrian paddocks is the perfect place for groups to gather together and enjoy some friendly competition in either horseshoes, bocce ball, croquet, volleyball, badminton, or lawn bowling. These activities combined with sporting clays, biking, archery, fishing, ATV riding, or canoeing create the Foxhall Challenge course set for team building activities and corporate retreat entertaining. left One of several rusticly elegant designed retreat lodge accommodations available for nightly rentals which were showcased during Atlanta Homes & Lifestyle Magazine’s Allure of Foxhall designer showcase of homes in 2011.

Exaggeration you say?

Nothing in or around Atlanta can be that awesome or I would have already heard about it! Is it possible to feel that remote and still be within 25 minutes of the world’s busiest airport? I don’t believe it! It just isn’t possible? How can anyone possibly make these wild claims? The answer is yes it is, yes it is really that close, and yes it is more beautiful, tranquil and amazing than your imagination can conjure. Foxhall is the kind of place you have to personally experience to comprehend its allure, beauty, and tranquility. There is something for everyone young and old to do. From the polo fields, the sport lawns, the manicured fields, the equestrian paddocks and granite stone stacked equestrian stable, the lakeside pavilions, the mile and half Chattahoochee River walk, the Beretta Sporting Resort-One Trident Clays shooting grounds, the archery range and 3-D course, the incredible bass fishing in Lunker Lake, the deer, turkey, and dove hunting fields, to the infinity edge swimming pools and tennis courts overlooking Lunker Lake, Foxhall has it all. An unprecedented collection of recreational activities and amenities hae been created and located all within the 1100 acre resort and are available for families and friends to recreate, reconnect and enjoy each others company as when hosting at event.

Corporate executives, social group leaders, dozens of brides and thousands of their guests can attest to the compelling beauty and spectacular views from Legacy Lookout Lodge and Event Lawn’s vantage point overlooking the Chattahoochee River, numerous lakes, and hundreds of acres of manicured lawns below. This new special event facility, which opened in September 2011, was carefully designed over a two year period with input from numerous meetings with special event, wedding and corporate event planner advisory groups. Each particular event planning group gave valuable insight and advice as to the their clients specific needs and desires. Every level of detail and forethought possible was integrated into the buildings design and surrounding grounds. As a result, Legacy Lookout Lodge is the ideal special events venue for corporate groups, weddings, and social groups. Each different group can comfortable gather together, dine either indoors or out next to the stacked stone fireplaces on one of the many stone patios, or just relax and enjoy spending time together. Foxhall Resort & Sporting Club’s unprecedented collection of recreational activities, convenient access in metropolitain Atlanta, transformative sporting lifestyle, and unforgettable setting is in fact the greatest event venue in America!

Foxhall’s enduring legacy will be in the cherished memories created when grandparents, parents, and children reconnect together, when brides and grooms welcome family and friends to share one of the most exciting moments of their lives, and when social groups and corporate colleagues gather together to recreate, relax and just “be”.

“Last Christmas I gave myself a vintage copy of Zelda: A Biography, Nancy Milford’s book about F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Alabama-born muse. The 1970s edition was bound in a hard-to-resist grassy-green cloth with discreet purple lettering, while the wild, peacock-feather book jacket felt a little like a Liberty print. But aesthetics aside, the biography is such a timely read since the new Leo DiCaprio film version of The Great Gatsby opens next year.” —Courtney Barnes

“‘The Hollywood Costume’ exhibit at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (October 20 through January 2013) includes more than 100 of the most iconic film characters’ cinema costumes from a century of Hollywood filmmaking. Most of the clothes have never been seen beyond the walls of studio archives so it should be an incredible exhibit (vam.ac.uk). That the company I co-founded with designer Nikki Nye, Paper-Cut-Project, has been commissioned to create a collection of paper wigs for 16 mannequins in the show certainly has me pining to go and see them fully realized with the costumes.” —Amy Flurry WE’RE OBSESSED WITH... I am excited about an upcoming collaboration, and will be spending time there to be inspired by this eclectic and textured environment. “Color-wise, fall is about a diverse range of blues and harvest hues—warm spice, honey mustard—and a range of rich reds, such as burgundy and zinfandel.” —Kevin Knaus “Fall is grape season, and I pick them off the vine from the end of August until the end of October. I love to just eat different grape varieties for a few days in a row. It’s a wonderful fast for the body and so delicious! There are black muscat, cardinal and small white Chasselas that I remember from my childhood in France, as well as more interesting California table grapes. I have a true passion for muscadines and scuppernongs. There are so many different varieties with very different tastes. I love to use them in flower arrangements with fall leaves.” —Marie-Laure Coste Dujols

ADAC OPENING TO PUBLIC

FÊTE ACCOMPLI

Atlantan Danielle Rollins has rolled the high points of her entertaining expertise into a hardback we can all call our own. Fresh off the presses this month, her premiere tome, Soiree: Entertaining with Style (Rizzoli, $50), details 15 grand, Southern galas with such esteemed guests as Oscar de la Renta, Lela Rose and Rachel Roy. The colorful affairs enlist the talents of local chefs like Clifford Harrison and Kevin Rathbun, and are accompanied by tips for creating the perfect bar, composing a party timeline and setting your most memorable table ever. —Kate Abney

Rollins’ Atlanta home, Boxwood (top), is the setting for many of the gatherings in her new book, Soiree.

On October 1, the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center (ADAC) will open to consumers for the first time. Until now, only licensed design professionals have been able to access the 550,000-square-foot interior design center. With the goal of introducing more consumers to the benefits of working with professional interior designers, ADAC now allows anyone designing a new or existing space to visit the center and browse the 1,200 product lines represented in its showrooms. Resources will be available to guide visitors through the process of hiring and working with a designer, and will assist in finding the best designers for their projects. The on-site offices of American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and International Interior Design Association (IIDA) will also be available to those seeking the expertise of a design professional. The opening date marks the beginning of two weeks of events created to educate consumers about the showrooms and its products, many of which are exclusive to the center. For more information, as well as a calendar of upcoming events, visit adacatlanta.com.

Signs of the TIMES Modern Atlanta’s Bernard McCoy reports on the standouts and stalwarts from this year’s Milan Furniture Fair Modern Atlanta (MA) co-founder Bernard McCoy splits his time between Atlanta and the UK, affording the contemporary connoisseur the opportunity to explore Europe’s greatest design offerings, then bring that knowledge back to our corner of the world. McCoy is a notable attendee of the world’s preeminent furniture fair, the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, which annually draws more than 300,000 members of the design industry to Milan. At the 2011 show, McCoy curated MA’s first international design exhibition, “MA’Frique,” an exceptional collection of contemporary African design. That same year, the Design Museum London selected McCoy as an esteemed nominator for its annual design awards. Always on the forefront of modern movements, McCoy returned for the 2012 Milan Furniture Fair in April, then dispatched his top finds from the state-of-the-art showcase, just for Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles.

▲ “Founded by Italian architect Carlotta de Bevilacqua, Danese Milano is a workshop of ideas, products and people that—unlike the big, established brands—does not have access to large budgets or the latest technology. Yet, it develops strong products that resonate well within its environment. The furniture is minimalist, well-crafted and always interesting. Designer Matali Crasset’s Double Side chair/table is a strong example.” danesemilano.com

THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN’! Here we are with fall upon us, and I’m in a quandary as to whether I should bring my coats and woolens out of storage. Do you remember the days when we experienced our first frost of the season by early October? Not anymore. Last fall and winter, I never wore my winter coat once! And those UGG boots that I bought a few years back to keep my tootsies warm are simply gathering dust in my closet. I do realize that women of a certain age ought not to wear UGGs, but I only wear them within a two-block radius of my home. Raking leaves, I fear, is becoming as rare as cool fall temperatures. I’m aware that this task requires more physical effort than taking a leaf blower to the front yard, but at least it’s not offensive to the eardrums. And will the people operating said leaf blowers ever learn to stop directing the dead leaves into the roadway and onto passing cars? It’s simply passing the buck, so to speak, making one person’s leaves another person’s problem. Inevitably, it happens to me when I’ve just had my car washed! Food is changing, too. Over the summer, I was shocked to learn that my local grocery store had stopped carrying pole beans. I was told that nobody bought them anymore. I’m assuming that the same goes for grits, too, as the store’s selection seems to be getting smaller by the day. In Atlanta, I’ll bet it’s easier to find kielbasa, clam chowder and other Northern delicacies than our traditional Southern staples. And don’t even get me started on network TV. I used to eagerly await the season premieres of Dallas, Dynasty, Designing Women, Hart to Hart and Remington Steele. Can someone please tell me why the major networks no longer air shows that are witty, glamorous and just plain fun? Why must we be subjected to those reality show wack jobs who love to cuss, slap and cry, all while butchering the English language? In the words of another TV blast from the past, fitness guru Susan Powter, “Stop the insanity!”

Local chefs dish on their favorite creations highlighting this fall favorite

“I love to use pumpkin to make the ultimate fall comfort dish, pumpkin risotto. Starting with a charred pumpkin puree, I then add risotto and diced chunks of pumpkin for flavor. The dish also includes pecans, white wine, shallots and a winter green like radicchio or chicory. Adding a bit of real maple syrup and crumbled house-made amoretti cookies on top gives it just the right amount of sweetness.” –Chef Daniel Chance, Campagnolo

“For one of my favorite vegetarian dishes, I use a warmgrain bowl of barley, red quinoa and white quinoa as a base. I love to use squash, especially pumpkin, as the dominant flavor. I start by dicing and roasting the pumpkin with fresh thyme, garlic and butter. Then I cook down some diced onions and peppers, and fold all the vegetables into the warm grain along with a little vinaigrette. I like to top it off with a velvety soft-boiled egg and a little lightly pickled vegetable for some crunch.” –Chef Wayne Rheinlander, West Egg Cafe

“We whip up an excellent pumpkin puree with brown butter and ricotta cheese at the restaurant. I season pumpkin slices with items like brown sugar, maple syrup and butter. After roasting the slices, I create a puree from them and mix in ricotta cheese and lemon zest. It’s best to store it cold. When serving, simply grill toast points with olive oil and sea salt, and finally spoon on the spread and garnish with chopped chives.” –Chef Andy Thoms, Fig Jam Kitchen & Bar

LONDON CALLING Two hotels in the English capital offer zen-like retreats in the heart of the city

Guest rooms at Metropolitan by COMO are elegant in their simplicity. The façade of The Halkin by COMO. Both hotels offer signature spa treatments by the COMO Shambhala Urban Escape. A chef makes preparations at the ever-popular Nobu, located within the Metropolitan.

The allure of London during autumn is hard to resist. The summer tourist season has quietly dissipated and the throngs of holiday visitors crowding the food halls of Harrods have yet to arrive. English gardens are at their fall peak—weather can be damp, of course, but with the city basking in its post-Olympics glow, there’s never been a better time to visit. And two hotels give you the feeling that you have London to yourself. Upon arrival at Metropolitan by COMO, an array of spa treatments at the hotel’s COMO Shambhala Urban Escape are at the ready to prepare you for a weekend or week’s worth of shopping and dining. And many of the treatments, including the signature Purify facial and COMO Shambala massage, can be arranged in-room at the hotel’s nearby sister property, The Halkin by COMO. A walking tour of Belgravia is an easy way to ease out of jet lag and get your bearings. Try a candle-making class with Rachel Vosper or just browse some of the best bespoke home furnishings on the planet at Soane (for handmade fabrics and furniture) and Linley (for breathtaking examples of exquisite marquetry). And, of course, there’s the window shopping and people watching at the nearby bustling Piccadilly Arcade. Back at the Metropolitan, guests can opt for the award-winning Nobu restaurant for haute cuisine, while the divine cocktails at the Met Bar are great for closing out a long day of sightseeing. Within The Halkin, afternoon tea or a light lunch at the Halkin Bar is perfect for when the itinerary is packed, but a visit to Chef David Thompson’s temple of Thai cuisine, Nahm, can’t be missed. comohotels.com 44

THE HIGHLANDS HOUSE owned by Claude and Ann Sullivan is, like the mountain it’s perched on, a picture of quiet beauty. It’s a beautiful balance of informal elegance, like stepping outside— a breath of fresh air. That’s due in large part to designer, and Highlands neighbor, John Oetgen, who helped the couple renovate their mountain retreat. And fi rst on the agenda was to reorient some spaces to take full advantage of the breathtaking views. The former kitchen, for instance, is now the dining room. “We opened it up because the main view was right there,” Oetgen says. “Originally, it had very few windows—just this funny corner window over the sink. We opened it up with all these doors out onto the terrace, so you can step right out onto the terrace with its beautiful views. And we didn’t add any fancy curtain treatments. I mean, this is a mountain house—the whole look was supposed to be very simple.” Simplicity is carried through the color palette, too. While many designers might have taken their color cues from the dining room’s stunning rug (one of many the owners have collected in their travels around the world), Oetgen found his inspiration in a more unexpected source: a pair of lamps with bases made of pipes from an old French organ. “They’re painted beautifully and their background

50

To take full advantage of the breathtaking views, designer John Oetgen extended the home’s covered porch with a half-round that can accommodate a table for 10. “The gardens all around the house are extraordinary,” says Oetgen, noting that Jeremy Smearman from Planters, Inc., was in charge of it all. “There’s every variety of conifer you can imagine.” The chaises are ideal for taking in the undulating countryside—there are mountains and valleys as far as the eye can see. opposite Because homeowner Ann Sullivan loves velvet, Oetgen used it generously throughout the house, including aqua and forest green interpretations in the living room’s main conversation area. preceding spread A mossy tree trunk in the garden echoes the home’s interior palette. The custom 14-foot banquette runs the entire length of the staircase, making it an ideal place to read or take afternoon naps.

color inspired the whole scheme,” Oetgen says. “And Ann adored the color—a smoky aquamarine.” While aquamarine is predominant in the dining room, it plays a supporting—but equally important—role in the living room. Here, it’s a refreshing accent to rich jewel tones, played out in lush velvets and leathers. Throughout the room, too, are unexpectedly elegant pieces, including a 19th-century chinoiserie table and a 1950s Venetian glass floor lamp in a green hue. “We even hung a globe in there, because they’re always going around the world,” Oetgen says. It may be the master bedroom, however, that’s most surprising in this mountain house. In a complete departure from the darkpaneled living room, this light-flooded space is wrapped with Palladian blue walls and decked out primarily in chartreuse paisley linen—the epitome of restful and relaxing. Meanwhile, that everperfect balance of casual and chic is achieved by adding an 18thcentury Gustavian table and a bedside chest of the same genre. But the true measure of success in this home’s redo lies in how Oetgen infused the owners’ travel collections, love of color and sense of style. “This couple has a vast personality,” the designer says. And it shows. SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK. 55

SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO LOOK FOR INSPIR ATION and, sometimes, you have to listen for it. As it turns out, Bill Musso and Bryan Cooke did both in creating a garden to complement their grand Italianstyle villa in Druid Hills. During the planning stages, says Cooke, “we went to the Carlos Museum to hear a lecture about ancient Roman architecture. [The lecturer] put up some slides and our fi rst thought was ‘wow, that so mimics our house—or our house mimics that!’ There were similar characteristics, such as the central axis from the front door to the back door all the way through the garden. And the main rooms having views into the garden; he talked a lot about how the garden was an extension of the house.” Before they could create the garden they envisioned, Musso and Cooke had to take it down to nearly its bare bones. In fact, their fi rst step was to call in a landscape demolitionist. But once that work was done, the homeowners immediately took steps to create a formal garden befitting their c. 1925 residence. There was, for instance, originally a curving sidewalk between the back door

clockwise, from top left To find inspiration for the water feature at one end of the pool, Musso and Cooke looked no further than their home’s red-tiled roof. Providing a focal point in the lower courtyard is a bronze fountain with a classical theme—an infant warding off a large bird—while a Crown of Thorns tucked into a niche affords an ever-blooming backdrop. The sago palm is winterized every year, and the TLC has paid off ; it’s now a towering version of the three-foot-high plant brought home eight years ago. A quartet of comfortable chaise lounges greets guests poolside. opposite The lush gardens of Musso and Cooke are a beautiful blend of both of their talents; Musso, a designer, gets the credit for the wellappointed furnishings while Cooke is the gardener extraordinaire. preceding spread Cocker spaniels Lolli and Aaron watch over both levels of the garden. 59

Evergreen clematis shades the pool arbor, complete with a table for outdoor entertaining. Tieback curtains and a suspended decorative frame—all readily able to stand up to the elements—do their part to up the decorative ante. opposite “There used to be a bigger pool here,” Cooke explains. “Built in the ’70s, it was 20x40 feet and 13 feet deep.” And the old one held 54,000 gallons of water; this one holds 17,000. “It was a lot less money to fill it in, to build a new pool rather than repair the existing one,” adds Musso. “We found some tiles that were appropriate to the period of the house, creating a pool that felt like it would have been in style when the house was originally built in the 1920s.”

and the steps leading to the upper courtyard. “We thought it would be much nicer to get back to that straight axis from the front door to the back door, up through the arch that leads to the pool area,” Cooke explains. In the lower courtyard, boxwoods border individual areas. “The boxwood hedges have been somewhat of a challenge,” admits Musso. “We started out with dwarf English boxwoods, not realizing that they’re very prone to disease and drought. And, of course, the fi rst two years after they were planted were our worst two years in terms of drought. The originals only still exist in one spot; the rest have been replaced with Korean boxwoods, which grow faster and are much more drought- and heat-tolerant.” “We like the formality of the boxwoods; it’s kind of a framed-and-contained approach,” Cooke adds. “You can put almost anything inside the gardens as long as it’s nicely framed and contained. That’s the Bill part—the framed-and-contained. My approach is more ‘oh, let’s experiment and see what lives!’ ” Experiment or not, it’s laid out beautifully. The vistas from the main rooms of the house are dramatic, including lush ferns and boxwoods, Calla lilies and hydrangeas, soaring palms and crape myrtles, classic statuary and fountains—with creeping fig and clematis defi ning the courtyard walls. “The thing that gives me the greatest joy is Bryan’s pride in what he has created,” says Musso. “At the end of a stressful day of work, he walks around looking to see what is new, what needs help, or he takes time to admire a bloom or texture combination.” And there’s a lot to admire. Here, creativity is in full bloom. SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK.

he Tudor-style residence of Paul Raulet is a good fit with its Peachtree Battle neighborhood, known for its architecturally significant homes. The house has a quiet, unassuming quality, one that’s welcoming from the get-go. And that’s precisely what the owner was looking for—a comfortable home to share with his children, Charlie and Grace. Raulet knew that the property had a lot going for it but, before making the purchase, he consulted with Mike Hammersmith. Having worked with the builder/contractor previously, Raulet respected his opinion and needed to know if a few “tweaks” he had in mind were feasible. “He wanted a more useable backyard,” recalls Hammersmith, which was ultimately 65

Mike Hammersmith, Inc.’s custom cabinetry is showcased in the kitchen, but it’s the extra-thick Calcutta Gold marble countertops that—in this homeowner’s opinion—take this space to the next level. “This room would not have near the look if the countertops weren’t as thick as they are,” says Raulet. He points out that the La Cornue range was a fortuitous find, too; it wasn’t easy to find something to fi t on that short wall, but the company made one that was just the right size. Next to the range, Burgess curtained the doorway to the pantry, adding softness and warmth to what can often be a cold space.

67

accomplished by removing a detached garage—and truckloads of dirt—and leveling the area. But just as important to Raulet was adding a master bedroom on the main floor. The original plan was to add not only the master but also a family room, providing space off the kitchen in which to entertain. But, Hammersmith says, it wasn’t long before he realized that the house would better accept a two-story addition. “Paul had to be talked into the second-floor space; he didn’t want to go into that much of a project.” In the end, however, the revamped floor plan turned out to be everything the homeowner wanted—and more. Another smart move on Raulet’s part was to bring designer Betty Burgess on board early, just as the framing got started. “From the moment Paul and I met for the fi rst time at my office, it was instant chemistry,” says Burgess. “We’re completely honest with each other, and at the same time respect each other’s opinions. And that’s key.” “It’s like a marriage!” laughs Raulet. “I can’t imagine how things would have turned out if I hadn’t picked the right ‘partner.’ ” Throughout the house, Burgess stayed true to her signature style while creating a purely personal place for the owner. “I feel like there have to be classical anchors as well as some unexpected modern elements to make a place fresh,” she explains. Case in point: A pair of classical chairs in the living room are covered in a modern orange fabric. “I’m not a modern or contemporary guy but I like the mix, the edginess,” says Raulet. 68

The leather armchairs, by Minton-Spidell, are available through Paul + Raulet. Lamps, Holland & Company. Cocktail table, South of Market. In the sunroom, custom windows by Mike Hammersmith, Inc., wrap the light-filled space. The chairs are from B.D. Jeffries and include pillows from Bungalow Classic. Pecky cypress covers the ceiling, while Peacock Pavers blanket the floor. The powder room—with “Imperial Trellis” wallcovering by Schumacher covering the walls—is hidden behind a jib door. Just off the living room is a lounge area, ideal for watching TV. “It’s a little teeny nook where I probably spend more time than anywhere else,” says Raulet. The linen covered love seat is from South of Market. The custom ottoman was designed by Burgess and is upholstered in Glant patent leather, available through Jerry Pair & Associates.

69

CS3_Raulet.indd 69

Likewise, the designer deftly merged pieces Raulet already owned with new acquisitions. “I used a lot of what he already had, and—from a budget point of view—I think that’s really important,” Burgess says. “Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to start a project with a clean slate, but it’s always important to be sensitive to the sentimental value of my clients’ possessions.” “She was very good at using things I already had,” Raulet confi rms. “That zebra rug in the dining room? I bought that when I was in Tanzania. It was rolled up in a closet and I hadn’t looked at it for a long time. But it’s perfect there!” In fact, the owner seems hard-pressed to think of a single thing he’d change. “I really wanted a comfortable, cozy family house in an ‘old school’ neighborhood; that was the goal,” says Raulet. “And I think we achieved that. Not only do my kids love this house but everybody who walks in says they could move right in. To us, this house has a soul and represents a very welcoming feeling.” SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK. 70

The antique convex mirror is from Interiors Market. The master bath has a spa-like ambience, thanks to a soaking tub and a nearly invisible walk-in shower that’s backed by a luxurious marble-lined wall. It was only a matter of time before the two creative souls were destined to meet.

F

ive years after being introduced by a mutual friend, Malissa Ladd and Bill Peace stood at the altar of their sacred space and said, “We do.” How does one blend a menagerie of friends, family and distinct styles of a renowned interior designer and an awardwinning marketing executive to plan the wedding of the year? One peace at a time. Immediately following their engagement, the question of “where” would follow the two into virtually every conversation about their special day. “We thought about a ‘runaway wedding’ out in the middle of an unsuspecting rancher’s field in Montana—our home away from home—at sunset, but decided to stay here where the people we cherish most

in our daily lives could be there,” says Malissa. “It was all about sharing—our relationship, our home and our favorite people.” Final wedding destination: Villa Petrol, a 100-year-old-gas-station-converted-home purchased by Bill in 2004. The couple’s private Atlanta residence offered a backdrop of beauty, ease, and sophistication—unmistakably the home of Peace. Grammy-award winning Jerry Nettuno played the fiddle as the breathtaking bride cascaded down the aisle to the guiding hand of Gene Ladd, her father. “My dad developed a beautiful ceremony for us,” beams Malissa. “He is a wonderfully spiritual person, and having him perform the ceremony was extremely special to us both.”

Following the much-anticipated nuptials, family and friends from Kentucky, New York, Montana and Atlanta moved from the living room to an outdoor veranda, where an intimate dinner for 36 was held under a wisteria-covered arbor. The menu (consisting of small entrees of regional meat and seafood served with local produce) was designed and prepared by Todd Annis, executive chef at Bold American Catering, “to provide our family and friends with a unique experience,” says Bill. “It was amazing.” Enter 100 additional dynamic guests— artists, architects, designers, chefs, business professionals and restaurateurs—and the magical day culminated with music from The Whiskey Gentry, poolside specialty cocktails by Atlanta Concoctions, and a flawless cake by Virginia Rankin of Mert’s Cakes handdelivered from Louisville, Kentucky. As the last guest left and celebration now complete, the newlyweds crossed the threshold to their new life, knowing the enchanted day was but a glimpse of many to come. 75

PORTRAIT: BENJAMIN MEECH ; VESPA: VESPAUSA.COM

I READILY ADMIT THAT I CAME OF AGE WHEN N a summer trip to the Alabama coast was a thing of wonder. We rented ’60s- and ’70s-era condos with AstroTurf carpet, stalagmite ceilings and their own salty-air ecosystems. It was heaven. But now, with a daughter, Anabelle—who thinks Lyford Cay is an appropriate winter break—I find myself on the road again, and it is far from the boiled peanut stands and putt-putt courses of my youth. Anabelle signed up for a summer in Florence with four extra days in Rome, little realizing that I would be tracking her every move like a wildebeest on the Serengeti. Even though the Duomo and the Vatican were the priorities of the day, my best friend and I made sure Anabelle’s trip was punctuated with unannounced sightings of us in Florence. And Rome. What the trip really did was remind me of how much has really changed in Atlanta. We don’t need a trip to Italy to shop like Florentine gentry, with Ferragamo and Frette available in our own backyards. We have access to the profumeria de Santa Maria Novella—such delicious scents. So what if we miss the frescoed ceilings? From Peachtree City to the Piedmont, we have all the Parmesan and pecorino cheeses, truffles and paninis we can eat. Our young ’uns ask for Farfalle pasta—al dente, of course—not the SpaghettiO’s we clamored for. We have all the Italian silks you could ever need at the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center. You can even buy a Vespa to get them home, further proving you don’t have to leave Atlanta to live like an Italian. Ciao!
