Hurricane Ian Hits Florida Hard
By Ted Hogan '24
FORT MYERS -- In the latter days of September, Hurricane Ian was forming over the central Caribbean Sea and was projected to make landfall and wreak havoc on theinhabitants of thesouthern coast of America Ian wasfirst identified asa tropical storm on the 23rd of September, and by the time it reached South Florida on the 28th, Ian was classified as a Category 4 storm, and set to travel along warm southern waters, primarily the Gulf of Mexico
According to the National Ocean and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) of theDepartment of Commerce, Hurricane Ian is ranked as the fifth most intense hurricane to have ever hit the United States Because of this, severe damage was done to Florida especially, but its effects could be seen in Philadelphia
Despite weakening after its first landfall in Florida, the storm strengthened into category 1 again before making landfall in South Carolina While moving north Ian losing its status as a tropical storm, slowly dissipated and even passed over our city in early October
During the initial connection to Florida, with a briefing at FEMA headquarters on September 22, President Biden said that ?Hurricane Ian could be the deadliest hurricane in Florida'shistory" According to the New York Times, the State
of Florida accounted for 119 deaths, more than any hurricane in Florida for around 90 years The cause of these unfortunate deaths was the unprecedentedintensity of Ian
Hurricane Ian?s effects can be seen through its extreme weather conditions A storm surge of 12 to 18 feet was recorded on the southwestern coast and some inhabited areas were struck with unnatural storm surges Fort Myers, a tourist destination, and the "Gateway to Southwest Florida" recorded a surge of 78 feet, the highest ever for the city Another unnatural factor of the hurricane would betheextraordinary rainfall In one case, 15 inches of rainfall fell in Placida, Florida, which had been situated right above the eye of the storm The amounts recorded were ?once in a millennium? kind of numbers
Hurricane Ian had an immediateimpact on Florida'sinfrastructurewith around 5 million people out of power between South Carolina and Florida Even now, accoording to poweroutageus, Florida has 15,000 households out of power weeks after the storm According to Moody?sAnalytics, a financial and real-estate evaluation subsidiary of the Moody Corporation, dueto the storm, there is 45- 55 billion dollarsworth of property damageinFlorida
Even with Hurricane Ian being dangerous as it was,
Floridaisno rookiein termsof experience when it comes to hurricanes The governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, knew this and had passed an infrastructure bill amounting to 1 billion dollars in 2021 which would prepare Florida?s infrastructure to be more resistant to intense storms Unfortunately, becauseof how recently the bill was passed, not much could have been done to prepare the peninsula for this monstrosity of astorm
This hurricane, unfortunately, should not be considered ?unprecedented?for long Necessary forces are required to propel a storm into the
frenzy that wecall ahurricane, and with global warming, amongother factors, propelling forward climate change, those forces will become more and more conducive to hurricanes According to NASA, these forces include warm ocean water, amoist atmosphere, low vertical wind shear, and previous disturbances such as a cluster of thunderclouds Fortunately, these scientists are optimistic that the increasing presence of these conditions should not cause these storms to form more often, but they could occur in a stronger fashion
Natural events like these
should not be normalized in the United States, and when help is needed, citizens should be there to help each other There are many donation services online to support relief efforts, such as the American Red Cross, Volunteer Florida, and Convoy of Hope which can be reached as easily as a click or phone call In these circumstances, to be there for thosewho wereaffected negatively by something out of their control is essential to humanity and for everyone to survive together against the natural forces of our home

HARRISBURG -- November 8th, 2022 is Election Day for the Pennsylvania Senate Race and this year is a close one The two candidates are John Fetterman (D) and Dr Mehmet Oz (R) So far, their campaign for the Senate seat has been characterized by attack ads, feuding on Twitter, and crudité Asof now, Fetterman leadsin most pollsby approximately 25% in regard to thepopular voteand isfavored to be elected in November; however, this could change Due to an increase in ad spending from the GOP, specifically theSenateLeadership Fund, in the past month, the gap between the two candidates has gotten much smaller and made the election much tighter Another major event that has influenced this change in the polls is Fetterman?s stroke which took him off the campaign trail for quite a while The stroke happened
on May 13, a few days before hewon theprimary and dueto thishealthissue, therehasbeen debate about his ability to speak and hear properly Fetterman acknowledged shortcomings in his recovery but noted continuous progress and assured afull recovery by January in an interview In the week of October 10th, ?538?(a poll agglomerate) givesFetterman a 72% chance of winning the election Before election day, voters have only the debate between the two candidates on October 25th To all those in the Prep community who are eligible to vote on November 8th, go out and cast your ballot!

Inside the bathrooms in Villiger Hall, you always hear the loud roar of air expelled from the hand dryers These hand dryers are intended to be a cleaner, more efficient way of drying your hands after you wash them Using wireless technology, these hand dryers require a simple, contactless handwave for them to work, which is designed to limit the amount of contamination from one person?s hands to another Using the air from the hand dryer eliminates theuse of paper towels, which results in less waste However, with so many students using the bathroom, somequestion how sanitary thesehanddryersare
?The hand dryers do not dry my hands well,? says Dominic DiSciullo '24, ?the hand dryers are the most unsanitary thing in the bathrooms? Supporting this idea, Nicholas Squillante '24 addsthat, ?Thehand dryers blow out bacteria onto your
hands and they just spread germs everywhere on your hands? These students, along with many other students of the Prep, have experienced issueswith thehand dryerssince they entered the building On the other hand, some students praise the hand dryers, with Dominic Schalk '26 saying ?The hand dryers are consistently functional and they dry my hands really well I never had any issues with the hand dryers? With these mixed reviews of the hand dryers, a question arises; ?How well are thesehanddryersmaintained??
Thecurrent stateof thebathrooms, with missing and dysfunctional equipment, has caused many to question the reliability of thesehand dryers On the one side of the argument, many say these hand dryers are quite useless and only contaminate your hands even more On the other side, these hand dryers are very effective at drying your hands and are better at drying your
hands effectively than paper towels, as seen in the Jesuit Hall bathrooms This concern is not new, however Research from the University of Connecticut and Quinnipiac University found that hand dryers spread morebacteriaonto people?s hands, with the suspicion that the hand dryers suck up the surrounding air and blow the bacteria from that air into your hands However, when attaching a filter to these hand dryers, they found that it eliminated the number of bacteria by almost 75% The contributor of the article, John Ross, MD, FIDSA of Harvard Medical, said that thebacteriafrom thehand dryersoriginatesfrom bacteria- filled areas of the bathroom, such as toilets, sinks, even the floors, but the vast majority of these bacteria are harmless to healthy individuals With this information, this means that the Prep can keep thehand dryersby adding filters to eliminate the spread of germs, as these germs are harmless to the healthy
students
The overall condition of the bathrooms has been met with mixed opinions, with some disapproving the condition of the bathroom, while others praisethework of thecleaning faculty for keeping the bathrooms in shape ?We usually do regular cleaning and disinfecting on the hand dryers However, they are hooked up to the electrical system, so we have to be careful not to damage them,? says Ms Nikia Webb, Building Services Supervisor/Events Coordinator ?We are trying to keep the bathrooms in the most sanitary state, but because of the students tearing up the bathroom equipment, we can only do so much with the bathrooms We cannot do the paper towels in the majority of the bathrooms because of students flushing them in the toilets, which clog the toilets? She also said that the remodeling will greatly improvethebathrooms?condition, which will givethem time

to improve the bathrooms to their cleanest state
The main concern for studentsisthesanitary stateof the hand dryers, but with the Building Services staff trying to replace the damages caused by students, it seems that the cleaning staff can only focus on thebigger issues, likedamaged or missing equipment This issue raises the question: Is it the fault of the students that these hand dryers are dirty?Themoveto paper towels is looking more possible, but because of the student body, the use of the hand dryers is to prevent the misuse of the trashed towels The Building Services staff can only do so much to clean and sanitize the hand dryers without causing electrical or mechanical issues, and whilethey arecleaning them, they have to replace equipment that could cost thousandsof dollars Only time will tell if we see significant improvement in the condition of the hand dryers

Enough Is Enough: Art Museum Strike
By Ian Gomez '23
PHILADELPHIA - Unfurled from the granite- clad steps above the entrance to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the black letters painted on the banner stood starkly in the bright morning light Thesame message hung in the air as the museum workers continued to protest, as cars honked their horns in support of the strike As we look back on the workers' strike this past month, the question was this: at onceboth the museum?s brand new director and CEO, and the face of the museum?s deafening nonchalance towards the workers that led to the strike, where in the world was Sasha Sudha?
I had the opportunity to interview some of the striking workers, and they were able to give me a firsthand view into the situation ?It?s been a long time coming,? said Laurel Garber, the Assistant Curator of Prints and Photographs at the museum, ?factually, it?s most telling we?re paid something, like35%lower than peer institutions for the same jobs? we need higher wages, we?re losing staff to other comparable museums because
of it, our healthcare is really hard to afford and themuseum could chip in alot moreto help us? we have no paid parental leave? This last point carried personal significance to Ms Garber, who had a baby last year and was forced to use all of her vacation daysin order to give birth and take care of her child
?I do get job protection for

to ?? advocate for mental health,? which he applied to his various classes and seminars that focused on finding the balance between school and personal life His fondness for everyone was especially shown in his desire to work with students with special needs, where he extendedthat samecharisma
Outside of the Prep?s doors,
he was notable in the involvement of CORA Services Inc, a non-profit organization in Philadelphia that provides professional human services for everyone He coached the Cross-Country team, and as such, was a vital member of the extracurricular community We all wish Dr Berna the best as we watch wherehispathleadshim Don't beastranger, Dr Berna!
twelve weeks, but it goes unpaid, so I wasforced to usemy own time off to make a salary? so basic things like that that are necessary for the morale and health of the employees here? Swagato Chakravorty a Curatorial Fellow in Contemporary Art, said, ?In the time that I have been here [since last September], I have seen an incredible number of colleagues across every
imaginable department leave because of the material conditions? He adds, as the strike slogans boom across the street from the workers in front of the doors, ?I am out here because it?s not just about how long you?vebeen here, it?sjust that the museum is severely not- compensating folks the way they should be? it?s just not sustainable? He also goes ontomentionthefact that during the strike, museum officials hired union- busters and temporary workers to try and keep the museum afloat as the bad publicity kept people from crossing the picket line Ms Garber agreed commenting?I would add to that general culture of disrespect for what we do and also just who weare as people, to hire people while we?re outside, to pay them at who-knows what rate, just so that they don?t have to give us livingwages? it saysit all ?
During the strike, the message from the workers was clear: the best thing we as the people of Philadelphia could do was to avoid crossing the picket line I was thankfully escorted by Ms Garber over the line in order to enter the museum, as I searched for the opposing view: themuseum it-
self I was told to wait for someone in the Department of Education, only to be told that any and all communication would have to be made through the PR department I reached out to the Department Head for comments on the situation, but unfortunately receivednoresponse
On my way out, I wasableto snag one of the fliers being handed out by the strike leaders manning the megaphones In the glossy, green ink of the paper, the same sentiment was echoed as was filling my ears from the chanting workers: the issues voiced by Ms Garber and Mr Chakravorty were key issues that needed to be addressed
Victory camefor theworkers on October 14th, when the museum agreed to the union?s demands on the points of the wage increase, paid family leave, improved healthcare plans, and bonuses for longevity at the museum, a sign of real change happening I leave with Ms Garber, saying, ?Support the workers who areoutsideand makethisplace run, as well make it the beloved institution that it is?

Since then, the teach-in has moved to D C, and hasgrown to encompass two separate but linked actions The first two days were devoted to learning Students and teachers were ableto attend eventson everything from student mental health to the Jesuit?s history of owning enslaved people There were meetings for queer Catholics, and first generation immigrant families Attendees also had the opportunity to connect with groups like the Jesuit Volunteer Corps or the Jesuit vocationsoffice
On Monday however students took their voices right to Capitol Hill Prep students met with staffers from Senator Pat Toomey?s office, Representative Madeleine Dean?s office, and Representative Dwight Evans? office They, in line with the teach- in?s 2022 themes advocated for migrant and environmental justice
In RepresentativeDean?soffice, students emphasized the water privatization crisis in the Philadelphiametropolitanarea
?Aqua[an aptly named water
utility company] is purchasing water utilities from towns and counties,? said Matt Shields ?23, ?and to make up for the money they spent on it, they raise prices on the residents in thosetownsandcounties?
A number of the Prep?s adults were also present on the trip Ms Sheri San Chirico, re-
ligion teacher, attended for the first time
?It was a place to find a voice to things that have been otherwise largely silent about problematic issues inside and outside of the church,? San Chirico said, ?and a resource for ways to move forward into action?

The Prep Abroad in Pamplona, Spain
with host families and friends
Time beyond the daily trips was also used frequently as time for students to explore Pamplona with their host-brothers and hang-out witheachother
Since the Prep is a Jesuit school, the first trip of the Spain exchange program traveled to the Sanctuary of Loyola The importance of the Sanctuary of Loyola is rooted in the fact that it is the preserved ancestral castle of the Loyolas Students from the Prep were able to tour the historic quarters of the estate and the actual sanctuary that resides right beside it Another fun tour that was experienced by the students was the San Fermin festival The famous San Fermin festival, also known as the running of the bulls, is a staple in Pamplona and stands out among bull running festivals throughout the world The tours in Spain ranged from formal and educational to fun and adventurous This variety of
tours and trips added to the wonderful experiences that both the students and the chaperonesenjoyed
The trip was beautifully made by the chaperons and adults in both SJP and the Spanish school Irabia Out of students that were asked to reflect on their journey to Spain and how they interacted with the trip there were no negative contributions Joe Griffin '24 said, ?I partook in the exchange program in order to gain fun experiences in another country I also wanted to experience what living with a host family is like Other students should certainly attempt to immerse themselves into a foreign exchange program as it is a fantastic experienceand holdsalifetime of unforgettable memories?
Michael Foy '25 said something similar, ?There is nothing for anybody to be afraid of Overall, it is an extremely fun trip offering both new sights and people,
there are no drawbacks to participating in any foreign exchange program? Both quotes give great insight to what the exchange program is about and shows the truth of being in another country with new people and a world of possibilities
Some worries that were
mentioned by members of the exchange program explained the emotion of being far from home and not seeing close family But, as claimed by other participants, the overwhelming feeling of being in another country with a group of buddies expels any fearsor worriesclearing apath

Meet The Dean: The Story of Mr. Greene
By Ryan Sullivan '26
Most Prep students know Dean Greene primarily for his role as Dean of Students However, there is a lot about Dean Greene that most students don?t know From being an all-star athlete to on the scene at 9/11, the life of DeanGreeneisquitethestory
Dean Greene went to Milton Hershey High School, and even though there was a Dean there too, he didn?t get in trouble ?Thetroublewasn?t an issue for me,? Dean Greene says, ?I was an honor roll student, a three sport athlete, I just focused on school and work and athletics I didn?t get involved in all those sideshows? Dean Greene played football, basketball, and ran track at Milton Hershey, and they formed some of his memorable moments in high school Some of those moments included being named ?Most Outstanding Player?in a big rivalry game called the Cocoa Bean Game, and being featured in the Pennsylvania Big 15 Dean Greene says, ?there?s a paper
in theareacalled Patriot News, they selected the top 15 High School Basketball Players in Central Pennsylvania Being named to that team was very memorable?
After leaving high school, Dean Greene went to the University of Pittsburgh, where he majored in Political Science After graduating from Pittsburgh, he went on to the University of Pittsburgh Law School This was because Dean Greene wanted to make it into the FBI, and those majorshelpedhimwithit
Dean Greene was accepted into the FBI, and what he saw there changed his life forever After being stationed in Omaha, Nebraska, Dean Greene was stationed at the second Twin Tower when it collapsed ?I remember standing under that tower because I had gone down to assist with the rescue and removal of theoccupantsin the building I remember standing under that tower, looking up, and seeing debris falling from thebuilding, which later turned out not to be debris, it was
actually people jumping from the building? Dean Greene says Hesaidthat heonly hada few seconds to decide what to do ?I just remember looking
up at that building, one, thinking I was going to die two, saying a prayer asking God to please not let me die, and three, figuring out what
my escaperoutewouldbe?
TheCIA also had an officein World Trade Center 7, which Dean Greenewassent to check on He got to the Center, and the building collapsed After the incident Dean Greene patrolled thecity, searching for survivors He said, ?You?d see parts of a building, huge chunks of buildings stuck in the side of another building, four, five, or six blocksaway I remember when wewent down for recovery, seeing one of the jet engines that had come off one of the jets There are fifteen bodies pinned under thishugejet engine?
After his time in the FBI, Dean Greene worked at a Charter School He taught many subjects and was the Dean of Studentsthere, aswell as the Varsity Basketball Coach He decided that he needed a change after 9 years there, and that led him to the Prep ?I love every minute of it,?DeanGreenesaysabout his current position at the Prep

Kearney's Debut Novel: HowTo KeepTime
By Conor Flaherty '24
Mr Kevin Kearney '06, a former English teacher at the Prep, is slated to release his debut novel, HowtoKeepTime on November 4th, 2022 His departure from the Prep came as a shock to many, when last year he announced he would be moving to San Diego to write full-time While he was already an accomplished writer, having written multiple short stories as well as being a staff writer for PopMatters, publishing a novel was always a dream for him ?I?ve been trying to write a book since I was 6 or 7 years old,? he said Now, that dream is finally coming true ?Therehave been many other books I?ve attempted to write, and I just never kind of had the nerve to follow through on it,? said Kearney
In his earlier stages of writing, there were many fruitless attempts at writing a novel ?I would have an idea and try and sit down for a couple of days in a row and write, and then I would get discouraged and I would just
stop,? said Kearney It wasn?t until 2015that hebegan totake writing a little more seriously; he made it a daily commitment, spending at least 10minutesaday free-writing
As time went on, he developed multiple short stories that allowed him to discover his style and strengthen his prose One story of his in particular that had a great impact on his writing was PERSUASIVE ESSAY ON WHY MY UNCLE JOE SHOULD NOT GO TO PRISON Published to X-R-A-Y Literary Magazinein 2020, this comedic piece tells its story through a student?s essay and his teacher?s comments Mr Kearney said, ?I think I just started to understand what I?ve been trying to do for along time, as well as my narrative voice" Not only that, but this short story was also the first of his works to feature a town called National Park, NJ, the setting for HowtoKeepTime
Despite what the name may suggest, National Park is not hometo any national parks In
fact, it?s not really home to much at all, except Mercer Moore, our protagonist in How to Keep Time After his wife abruptly leaves him, Moore is left in denial, and files a missing person report When his brother and father find out about this, they decide to intervene by taking him to the father?s cabin in the Pine Barrensfor aweekend As his family tries to get his lifeback on track, Moore grapples with his denial and eventual acceptance
While writing the story, the Pine Barrens became a place Mr Kearney became very fascinated with; ?As much as it?s about that man and his family, it?s also very much about that place, that part of the country,? he said The settings of the novel, both National Park and the adjacent Pine Barrens, served as heavy inspiration for it Mr Kearney called the Pine Barrens a sort of ?ecological oddity,? serving as an incredibly personal settting for a very personal novel
Much of what makesHowto
Keep Time such a personal novel isnot just thesetting, but the writing process itself Oftentimes, Mr Kearny will craft ideas from personal experiences, and twist or change them In the case of How to Keep Time, Mr Kearney said, ?So I tried to imagine one of the most horrifying things for me? what if my wife was no longer with me? What would life look like? How would I react? That was the genesis? This simple processallowsMr Kearney to

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are back again, prepared with another helping of spiceafter a hectic year for the legendary alternative rock band After their twelfth studio album, Unlimited Love, and a comprehensive summer world tour, the Peppers are already back, having dropped their thirteenth album, Return of the Dream Canteen, on October 14, only adding to the band?s fantastic year Luckily for listeners, Return of the Dream Canteen avoids running into the trap of quantity over quality and justifiesitsexistencewith adisplay of fantastic, experimental music that bodesvery well for the Chili Peppers once the dust of their whirlwindyear wearsoff
Aesthetically, the album most strongly resembles Unlimited Love, released just this April, and that is no coincidence To celebrate the return of longtime Peppers guitarist John Frusciante to the band, the band recorded a whopping forty-eight songs in the same sessions, bolstered by the intensive collaboration with record producer Rick Rubin The end result was two fulllength double albums within thespan of fivemonths: an insanefeat
The best part of this sweet
double package deal is that none of these songs feel really unnecessary: both Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen are long and stuffed with content but never feel overpacked This is especially true for Return of the Dream Canteen, which certainly sounds more mellow and experimental than Unlimited Love despite being so similar, having no shortageof excellent tunes
The weird and funky opener, ?Tippa My Tongue?, is as rhythmic asit is silly: almost a love letter to some of the band?s early experiments in funk metal ?The Drummer?, meanwhile, is a past- faced joyride where all four band members are operating at peak form, headed by the return of Frusciante?s signature synths A personal favorite of mine is ?Fake as Fu@k?, an adventurous rock tune with an upbeat chorus, almost jazzy with its rapid tempo and excellent addition of brass to the typical rock sounds The album ends with the calm, dreamlike closer, ?In the Snow?, whose experimental sound for the band works wonders as a capstone for the pastiche of genre foundacrossthealbum
The highlight of the album, however, is ?Eddie?, a rock odyssey honoring the late Ed-
die Van Halen with glorious fanfare As lead singer Anthony Kiedis told the story, bassist Flea had come into their studio the day after Van Halen?s death with an emotional bass lick on his mind, and thesession unfolded into a song in his honor Though the titular ?Eddie?himself is never mentioned by name, the song does detail his long- spanning career and thelegacy heleaves therock ?n roll scene, perfectly encapsulated by Frusciante?s extended guitar solo It stands
out as a musically and emotionally powerful song in an already musically and emotionally powerful discography

Mr Kearney is, and will continue to be dearly missed by the Prep community
Everyone can support him by purchasing How to Keep Time on November 4th or pre-ordering it now at kevinmkearney com
Finally, it was confirmed by Mr Kearney that another book ison theway! Of course, there will bealot of timebeforeany official news comes out regarding this mystery book, but be sure to look forward to all his stories that have yet to come
tured within the whimsical world that the Red Hot Chili Peppers have made for the secondtimethisyear
Ultimately, it feels like this album, alongside Unlimited Love, marksasharp shift in the band?s trajectory Even beyond the return of John Frusciante, whose influence on the band?s sound is strongly felt, these past two albumshaveafeeling that theChili Peppersaremore than ever returning to their old 90?s and early 2000?s sound, and it's a warm welcome to have back It?s not to say that the newer albums were worse with their new style? some of my all-time favorites from the band come from this era? but the band feels like they are capturingsomekindof ?magik? to pack thismuch of theband?s discography into one killer album While Return of the DreamCanteendoesn?t necessarily reinvent the wheel entirely for theband compared to Unlimited Love, its willingness to experiment in new genres while also diving deeper into genres from the band?s history is a great sign for this band?s future And though I?m a bit peppered out from two double albumsreleased so closetoone another, fans of the Red Hot Chili Peppers have more than enough quality spice to chew on

Twelve Carat Tour Review
By Brendan Dougherty ?23
PHILADELPHIA - Twelve Carat Toothache, Post Malone?s long awaited 4th studio album, arrived with a bang on June3rd, 2022 Thealbum was a bit of a turn from the usual music that fans got from the singer/songwriter Austin Post While there were a number of upbeat hits, there were more slower songs, where Post spoke about his mental state, a struggling state at the time of recording, where he dealt with high-level anxiety asaproduct of COVID-19
Just two weeks after the release of his album, Post announced hewould be going on tour headlining 38showsin 33 cities, over the course of just two months His opening act would be rapper and Compton native Roddy Ricch, who had just collaborated with Post on the song ?Cooped Up? Following a successful album release to add on to an impressive catalog of hit songs prior, fans were excited for Post to roll back in town He was the last show many fansgot to see beforeCOVID, histour ending just before the virus came to the US, so Post being back on stage offered plenty of nostalgia
When thetour wasset to pitstop at Wells Fargo Center in South Philadelphia, the crowd was buzzing from the beginning Roddy Ricch came out with a bang, literally, with the useof pyrotechnics Heopened hisshort set with hisfeatureon Dababy?s ?Rockstar?, the first of his many guest verses he would play, including ?Walk Em Down? by NLE Choppa, ?Lemonade? with Internet Money and Don Toliver, ?Racks in the Middle? by the late Nipsey Hussle, and ?The Woo? by the late Pop Smoke Of course, Ricch would make sure to serenade the crowd with his own songs, playing ?Down Below?, ?lateat night?, and ?High Fashion? most notably On his hit song ?Die Young?, the screen at the back of thestage pictured imagesof passed artists, ranging from relatively recent artists like Mac Miller and King Von to all- time classics like Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston
Ricch would finish up with his hits ?The Box? and ?Ballin??, and it would be time for Post Malonefromthere
Post began with his chilling album opener ?Reputation?, a fantastic vocal performance, where he was surrounded by dimmed lightsand smoke Post would follow this by easing in the crowd with a number of sing- along songs, going from the Twelve Carat Toothache hits ?I Like You (A Happier Song)? and ?Wrapped Around Your Finger?, to plenty of his previous hits from Beerbongs & Bentleys, playing ?Better Now?, ?Psycho?, and ?Candy Paint? all in a row Post brought fantastic energy out of the gate, while the lights brought its own perspective to the performance, with ?pods? of light that moved up and down on stage, sometimes focusing in on Post if he stood under oneof thepods
From this point of the concert, Post shifted to amorevo-
cal set of songs He remained stationary for his hit ?I Fall Apart?, followed by hisnewest slow song, ?Euthanasia? On the latter, he reached down to theground, singing with heavy emotion, whilethecrowd lit up their phoneflashlights, achilling sight throughout the stadium Post let the crowd know how much he appreciated them, not only here but throughout the entire show It was apparent how much of a tough time he endured during COVID, and he continuously let the crowd know how much it meant for him to be back on stageinteracting with theaudience
Following theseheavy songs, Post went acoustic His guitar and stool came out through a trap in the middle of the stage, and Post sang ?Stay? and ?Go Flex?, two of his more laidback songs His versatility asa rapper, singer, and musician is ?flexed? here Following this softer moment, Post moves into one of his biggest hits,
?Circles? He began the first half acoustically, and after the first chorushetook off hisguitar and the beat came back in and he went back to moving aroundthestage
?Circles? essentially closed out the first half of the show and Post transitioned into a more hard- hitting set, beginning with oneof hisnewer hits ?A Love/Hate Letter to Alcohol? The song began with flickering black and white lights across the arena, while Post stared into a close up camera on stage, creating amazing visuals on the screen Immediately following thishit, Post continued with the jarring and energetic ?Take What You Want?, featuring Ozzy Osbourne and Travis Scott The electricity of this song was magnified through explosions and fireworks, a terrific use of pyroctechnics A couple songs later, Post Malone went into the dark and heavy ?Over Now?, where laser lights were used terrifically across the
pods on stage In an incredible transition from ?Over Now?, the laser lights turned from blue to green, and as they flickered in unison with the drum beat, the music suddenly stopped, and Post started yelling the lyrics to possibly his biggest song, ?rockstar?, after the hesitation Now well into the concert, Post?s energy seemed to only get stronger, and the crowd was feeding good energy back to him as someof hisbiggest songswere beingsaved for last
Just a couple songs later, Post brought out Roddy Ricch for their aforementioned collaboration ?Cooped Up? The two fed each other great energy, and Ricch left the stage with a pink cowboy hat he found from the crowd From this point on, the crowd basically knew every word Post continued with his hit collabs ?Sunflower? and ?One Right Now?, made with Swae Lee andTheWeeknd, respectively
To conclude his amazing show, Post played his hit ?Congratulations? The bright white lights not only lit up the stage, but theentirecrowd, and it allowed for the crowd to have interactions with each other asawhole Beforehisfinale, Post signed autographsin thefront row for acoupleminutes, an awesome experience to watch and seehow thoughtful of aperson heisdespitehis monumental fame
On his last song, Post said, ?Philly you know I had to play thislast onefor you guys?, and of courseit wasthesong dedicated to his childhood idol, Allen Iverson, whom he grew up idolizing as a star talent with the 76ers ?White Iverson? was a terrific final moment across the stadium, and thecrowd left inhappy spirits
Post Malone is worth the hypeasaperforming artist He constantly interacts with the audience, he showcases a terrific voice, has awesome song selection, and creates an environment that is so fun for not just the audience but himself His having fun allows for the audience to have so much fun in return, and that is exactly why I recommend him as a must-see

Halloween Candy Ranked
By Max Nast '23
With the infamous ?Spooky Season? upon us, it?s almost timefor corn mazes, costumes, hay rides, jack-o' lanterns, haunted houses, and so much more! But most importantly it?s time for candy Each Halloween bringsaplethoraof candies of all shapes and sizes to each little trick or treater who dares to journey from door to door But with so many different sweets, which one is the best? Which one gets the most love?
Personally, I love a good 100 Grand Bar The smooth and rich caramel mixed with the crispy crunchy goodness createsfor aeuphoricsensation on my taste buds In my opinion, there?s nothing better than chomping into a full size 100 Grand after a long day of spooky fun Due to the rarity of these candies, receiving one on Halloween would absolutely make my night, let alone week But that?s only MY opinion
In an effort to uncover the most popular Halloween candy among high schoolers, I created a Google Form asking acouplequestionsabout candy in general The first question asked the participants what their favorite candy type was (chocolate bar, gummy or fruity, lollipop, or other) and thesecond asked them to name their favorite candy Even
though the survey only collected 20 responses, many of the responses were from both boys and girls- all within thehighschool agerange 70% of the participants said that chocolate bars were their favorite Halloween treat, whereas 25% said that they fancied a gummy or fruity candy A whopping 5% said that they preferred something else, and nobody wanted anything to do with the lollipopoption
As far as the second question goes, Reese?s Peanut Butter Cups took the cake Each of these 4 responses had something to do with the beloved peanut butter candywhether it wasjust theoriginal Reese?s or some special holiday edition However, there was a 3 way tie for second place Sour Patch Kids, some form of Hershey?s chocolate, and some form of Kit-Kat all tied up for second place Most of the other responses were one offs, meaning that the particular candy that the participant mentioned wasonly mentioned once
So whether you?re stocking up for trick or treaters, bringing candy to a party or event, or even just looking for a popular treat, you can?t go wrong with a Reese?s, Hershey?s, Kit-Kat, or even Sour Patch Kids

Earlier this year, HBO made its return to Westeros with the Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon, to great success The show premiered to nearly 10 million viewers on HBO and HBO Max on August 21, 2022 While HotD garnered considerably more viewers for its premiere than its sequel, does it live up to the Game of Thronesname?
House of the Dragon takes place 200 years before Robert Baratheon holds the mantle of the crown and sits the iron throne, which means as the title of the show implies, it circulates around the infamous Targaryen family In classic GoT fashion, theentireshow is centered around tension provoked by the fight for the iron throne; however, the prequel has more of a political backdrop, with alot moreon screen delegation between noblesthan in the original series HotD starts off much slower than its mother series, which is not necessarily a downside The
mounting tension and slow burn of the series is amplified by thefact that theepisodesare spread out with much larger time gaps than the original series If you arelooking for guts and gore right off the bat though, the show may seem too slow apace, but I promise, theactiondoespick up
Speaking of violence, this show has plenty of it, as to be expected of any HBO show, especially a precursor to Game of Thrones, with soldiersbeing burned alive by dragon fire, and heads being cut clean in half as a closeup Another thing you can expect to see a lot of isgraphic sexual content, which also is on par with the original series If you are on the squeamish side I would not suggest this show for you as there are more graphic sex scenes than a brothel, more amputations and decapitations than a civil war hospital, and more live birth scenes than a maternity ward(WHY?)
Aside from the plot of the show, theaudio and visualsare
Cruciverbalist: Miller McCloskey

fantastic The soundtrack is as masterfully composed by Ramin Djawadi as it was for GoT, and it goesalong way in setting the tone for scenes As for visuals, the set design is absolutely breathtaking with the amount of detail that gets put into each and every throne hall, street festival, and godswood
Asfar asthecasting goes, all of the characters are wonderfully portrayed with the caliber of acting that has come to beexpected of any HBO original series The cast features some big names that you may recognize, such as Matt Smith and Olivia Cooke Despite their fame, they do not overshadow actors whose names arelesswell known
Overall, HotD is a fantastic show that will not disappoint longtime fans, and does not exclude new fans just starting If anything, it is a perfect time to jump into one of the most

The Prep Speaks Out On Abortion
By Jack Finley '25
On June 24th, 2022 the Supreme Court of the United Statesoverturned thelandmark court case which legalized abortion across all 50 states in thecountry
?[The Prep's] action is in support of the Church's teaching on a consistent life ethic,? said Mr Cavacos when asked about the Prep?s stance on abortion and actions taken by the Prep highlighting the Respect LifeClub
Antoine Robinson '24, although not a member of the Catholic Church, considers himself apro-lifeadvocate
?[Being pro- life] means everything to me? killing millions of babies every year, that?s not something I can standfor,?saidRobinson
Liam Holden '23, who also doesnot identify asaCatholic, said, ?I have the opinion that the government should have a very limited - if any - role in regulating abortions It should be a very private matter left betweenanindividual and their doctor?
Robinson findsit isawkward being nonreligious when much
?I am not certain that we, as a Jesuit institution, have a stance on 'abortion rights' specifically, as the regulations for legal abortion access are civil matters,? said Mr Cavacos "The reason 'abortion rights' isin quotesin my statement is that abortion rights are really not 'rights' Theteaching of the Church is consistent on lifeissues, and that would certainly impact where we would stand on the varying regulations"
In regards to specific policy proposals in the aftermath of Roe, Holden said that the Prep should be heading towards neutrality on this issue, however he said that neutrality is not thePrep?scurrent stance
"Between special segments on the announcements and an activepro-lifeclub that isboth promoted by the school and participated in by high level admins, the school has a clear preference,?hesaid
In response to the Prep stating, ?our action isin support of the Church teaching on a consistent life ethic,? Holden used some examples from the former US congressman, Father Robert Frederick Drinan, SJ
the Church in the years and decades ahead [may be] in the position of having sinned by the use of its prestige and power against the sincerely held convictions of nonCatholicsandnon-believers?
Holden said that ?when the school istaking astanceon the legal question of abortion, which it is, Father Drinan would suggest that the school isactively sinning, and I would agree with him We are going against the directives of Vatican II St Joe?sPrep isaprivileged institution If we, as an arm of the Church and as Catholics, are using our power and prestige to try to influence this legal matter, we are sinning?
The upcoming election is also heavily discussed due to their proximity to hot button issueslikeabortion
pro-choicecandidates?
Holden also said how thisissue is going to be especially relevant next month becauseof the upcoming gubernatorial election, stressing the importance of participating in government and thevalueof going beyond voting in a democratic society
"It?s not voting that got Roe overturned It got overturned by an undemocratic institution, an unelected branch of the government," Holdensaid
When asked about his thoughts on the representation of pro- life individuals in the current American media, Robinson said, "I think [being pro-life] is really hated on, really discriminated against Everyone?s point should be heard fairly People should be coming to it with an open mind andbeingunbiased?
ple? said Robinson ?We need to educate ourselves on who we are really voting for without putting labels on candidates"
When asked where men should stand in the conversation of abortion, Holden said, ?A pro-choiceposition encompasses both the fact that men should not control women?s bodies and women should not control other women's bodies There is a special irony, nonetheless, in an all boys school like St Joe?s Prep that is already denying women entrance, also asserting their opinions over women'sbodies Themajority of thepublic disapproves of the Supreme Court?s decision to overturn Roe vs Wade, though the mediawantsto represent it asif it is some equally represented culturewar issueand it'snot "
of the pro- life movement is deeply connected to religion However, he states that being pro-lifegoesbeyondreligion
?People say that you shouldn?t kill them because [they are] people from God I say you shouldn?t kill them because we are all human? If you shouldn?t kill people now, why kill people when they are first being born?? said Robinson ?Killing the unborn, the most defenselesspeople, is not empowering to anybody, and it?saviolation of human rights, it's a violation of the constitution"
?He believed that it [abortion] was morally abhorrent? despite that, he was prochoice,?saidHolden
Citing research by Father Drinan ondocumentsfrom The Second Ecumenical Council of theVatican, Holden said, ?religious freedom is absolutely implicated [in this conversation] Judaism demands abortion in certain circumstances and it does not hold to the Catholic view that life begins at conception?
In quoting father Drinan, Holden said, ?Catholics and
Robinson said, "It?s really important because [the Republican Party] istheparty that standsfor what I believe in, so it?s extra important for me to get out there and to make sure other people know what they stand for I?ve realized there are so many injustices going on in the world? the moral compass of the world isn?t what it should be or used to be?
On the other hand, Holden said, ?I consider myself slightly left of the democratic party I will strictly vote for
Robinson commented on how he feels that there is a certain expectation placed upon himself and Americansin general based on race, ethnicity, gender, etc to votefor certainpoliticians
?In the media, Black people always have to vote for Democrats?everyone has heard that, and it's a really bad stereotype Even though [many African Americans do vote for Democrats] it shouldn?t be happening In my opinion the Democratic party is not the best party to help Black peo-

Ignite Freshman Retreat: Does It Work?
By Brendan Dougherty '23
For the first time since the fall of 2018, the annual freshmen retreat featured an overnight stay for the newest members of the Prep?s student body Mr Dougherty ?04, the school?s director of Mission & Ministry, led freshmen retreats like this at St Peter?s Prep in Jersey City, NJ, and wanted to bring the experience back to the Prep The purpose of this freshman retreat isto introduce the newest class of Prep students to St Ignatius, and why hewasimportant and how they can value his beliefs as freshmeninaJesuit highschool On a less serious note, the night would feature many enjoyable activities for the freshman, including the Cape and Sword Drama Society?s spin on ?The Life of St Ignatius?, a scavenger hunt, and a number of icebreaker activities The school was buzzing on that Thursday afternoon, perhaps withabit toomuchbuzz
Many things went very well, such as a terrific, engaging speech from Mr Tony Braithwaite ?89 on the roof of the Gesu, as well as the roles that thesophomore?groundscrew?
played in making sure the rooms were prepared for the
next activity while the senior and junior leaders led the groups On the flip side, many activitiesseemed ineffectiveas a whole, lacking engagement because that isjust how freshmenare Onecannot force251 14- year- olds to stay engaged for over 24 hours on the topic of history andspirituality
So that raises the question: Can the overnight retreat be effective in the future? I think yes On Thursday night of the retreat, many of the activities were lacking a certain effectiveness, specifically those geared towards personal reflection and requiring a level of quietness Why? Well these are freshmen in high school here They are having a sleep over at their own school Some may have been in their own teachers?rooms They are also sleeping over with 12-15 kids in each room, many of whom they havebecomegood friends with How don?t thosecircumstances gauge a lack of paying attentionandsomecontrol?
In other activities that were actually geared towards letting loose and having fun, many of those digressed, as groups weresplitting up and kidswere just doing their own thing while the scavenger hunt went
on During the Life of St. Ignatius play performed in the Kelly Fieldhouse, many side conversations were happening, and theperformerswere fightingtobeheardby themembers of the audience who cared to pay attention ?The predicament of spacehasto benoted?, says Fr Surovick SJ ?Not having a theater to perform that play is a problem we won?t have to deal with next year The lobby renovations were in full effect, additional spaces that we won?t have to work aroundinthefuture?
Thursday may have been a rollercoaster, but the school can certainly work with that Into thenight, after aphenomenal speech from Mr Braithwaite ?89 mostly about the high school experience, aswell asan effectivepersonal reflection time in the Gesu late at night the young students seemed to be tired out Or so we thought Many students would not fall asleep until very late, messing with student leaders and each other But maybethatiswhatwewant?
Friday made a complete 180 from the roller coaster of the night before The freshmen were tired, but it worked out, because they did not have the
energy to digress from the topic, and actually seemed very engaged with the activities They went through a peaceful and informative neighborhood walk led by faculty talking about the history of the Prep?s surroundings Plenty of reflection time was spent on this Friday, where I was pleased to hear how much the freshman had a great time They had fun, sure, but they also said they got a lot out of this experience They knew about St Ignatiusand hismission now, and they were able to lay the foundation to some new friendships while they were at it The retreat ended with Mass, and the freshman went homehappy
As a worker of the retreat, whether a faculty member, a student leader, or an organizer and leader from Mission and Ministry, one must see this retreat asawin Thestudentshad fun, they learned something, and they didn?t recreatethefire of 1968, which is probably the biggest win of all But howcan the retreat be improved? First of all, I think thescheduling of events should be reordered The activities of Thursday night that have the freshmen engaged should become Thursday nights priority The
play, the scavenger hunt, and possibly other activities that require movement would be great to make the new class feel welcomed and to tirethem out more importantly There can still be other more serious things, but the message of St Ignatius should be enforced on Friday The freshmen were very engaged that Friday morning, and they totally wouldhavebeen abletoinherit the more valuable stuff that they may have missed the night before Utilization of space will definitely play a larger role in next year's retreat To haveatheater and the Learning commons can certainly beagamechanger when deciding to allocate space for different groups Lastly, I think morefaculty should bepresent Teachersnaturally haveamore authoritative nature and voice than an upperclassmen would, and it could keep them engagedmorefrequently
Even if the event featured plenty of chaos, therewerejust as many positive takeaways, and so much that can be built upon for future years All things considered, the Class of 2026 is lucky to be the only class in the building to have thisstyleof afreshmanretreat

At number 5, I have a fairly easy pick I went with thefood that?smost known for itsbread and sauce combo A fairly cheap yet good quality chicken chain I went with Raising Cane?s Although Raising Cane?s has been known to be overrated, I believe that the chain hasoneof thebest sauce creations to ever be introduced to the taste bud world The combination of the crinkle cut fries along with the savory bread dipped in the top secret ingredients of the Raising Cane?s sauceisextremely hard to beat That being said, it isin fact beaten
Here is where the list starts to get controversial Thischain has been widely recognized as less of a fast food restaurant than the other typical locations you would usually go to At the number 4 spot, I selected Panera Bread There is one specific entree that pushed this
chain into the top 5 The Grilled Mac and CheeseSandwich completely expanded my taste buds I have never tasted such a great combination of cheese, bread, and pasta in my entire life This entree alone is what pushes Panera Bread to the4spot
I hate to say it, but I think one of my favorite fast food chains is about to come up Since this is a ?bang for your buck? list and not a ?pure taste?list, I am forced to place this chain here I have to put Chipotlein the3 spot Chipotle is clearly a number 1 contender Whether you get abowl or a burrito, you will never leave Chipotle unsatisfied or with an empty stomach The only reason why Chipotle is ranked at the 3 and not higher is simply because of the price I am not ableto leaveChipotle satisfied unless I spend at least 15 dollars, which is way more than I want to spend on abowl of rice, steak, queso, and some other toppings I apologize to Chipotle, as I love the food they bring to the table, I just hope for lower pricing in the future
And here comes the number 2, which may be an extremely hot take Thisfast food restaurant is known for hitting your wallet just as hard as your
tastebuds, if not harder The number 2 spot belongs to Shake Shack Shake Shack is oneof theonly locationswhere I am able to forget about the amount of money I am spending and just enjoy my food That ishow good theseburgers are There is no better meal than aShackburger an order of fries, and a nice milkshake The only reason why they are at the2 spot isbecauseof their price I still feel some sort of regret when looking at my bank account after eating this infamousmeal
My number 1 pick is the most obviouspick in thistop 5 list It hastheperfect combination of fantastic food, great milkshakes, and a fairly good price I went with Chick-fil-A It isnot up for debate Thefact that Chick-fil-A?s food already beats out every other restaurant, and then add in that it?s cheaper? How much better can someone get? Chick- fil- A is the best combination of a healthy wallet and happy taste buds
Stay tuned for more of Passio's Picks coming soon!

The Fall Rugby Freshman Experience
By Miller McCloskey ?26
As an incoming freshman of the Prep, I was excited for all of the possibilities and choices I would have If you told me, even ayear ago, that my father would suggest that my sport of choiceshould befreshman Fall Rugby, I would have thought you were joking Rugby was thelast sport I?d expect to play ? my parents would never let me play football, I guess because of the tackling and all thepossibleinjuries So when I heard the idea of Rugby, a sport with no pads and known for tackling, I was more than surprised, dare I even admit alarmed! Now here I am writing for TheHawkeyeabout my experience, so far, as a freshman Fall Rugby player I remember how my Mom pulled up the Prep?s Rugby website andplayedtheir Youtubevideo I have to admit, it is a great promo I think what attracted me the most is that it actually looked like fun, and I think trying new things is always a plus
TheMerriam-Webster definition of Rugby (noun): ?afootball game in which play is continuous without time- outs or substitutions, interference and forward passing are not permitted and kicking dribbling, lateral passing, and tackling are featured? Since joining Rugby, I wondered how this sport even came to
be On St Joe?s Prep Rugby webpage it says, ?Rugby is an international sport played originating in England but has spread across the world From an evolutionary perspective, Soccer evolved into Rugby which then evolved into Football Hence, it combines the athleticism of Soccer with the agility, speed and strength of Football ?
I had a chance to talk to the Prep?s Head Rugby Coach Tom Dugan ?78, who has been coaching Rugby at the Prep since 2007 Coach Dugan has
coached Rugby for 14 years, and hasquitean impressiveresume: Monsignor Bonner, Bloomsburg University, Villanova University, he currently coaches for the Schuylkill River Men?s Club that went to theDivision 1 National Championship in Spring of 2022! I asked Coach Dugan what was the most interesting place that Rugby has taken him, he said, ?The Andes Mountains in Chile for Easter dinner? I would have never guessed that answer! Coach Dugan really asksonly onething, and that is
to not wastehistime You may not be aware of this, but our Director of Financial Aid is also the Director of Rugby Brian McCloskey ?91 ? yeswe share the same last name, but no we are not related I had a chance to ask Coach McCloskey (who has coached Rugby at thePrep for 18 years) how he became involved with Rugby and hesaid, ?I played it in college ? a Prep guy by the name of Steve Matz? I was at Fairfield at an activities fair, and I walked up to the table and he said, ?Hey you?re little
McCloskey, you?re playing Rugby?andI saidokay?
Although I was nervous, I have had a lot of fun with my Rugby experience I am learning the game, which I never expected I would play before thisyear Besidesrugby having the best team magnet at the Prep, and a chance to meet other freshmen, SJPRugby has boosted my confidenceand reminded me to take unexpected chances The upperclassmen seem like a tight bunch which iskey for asuccessful team
I have been involved in two tournaments so far, one at LaSalle?scampusand theother one out in Reading The tournaments are usually on Sundays and take up most of the day The coaches say we don?t have a home advantage, because the teams travel a lot to different areas of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, but the Prep community coming out to support usisour advantage
I have one more tournament coming up, at PSU Berks on October 23 So far I have only sustained minor scratches ? I don?t want to be like Coach McCloskey who when asked if he ever had any dreams or nightmares about Rugby said, ?All the time, almost every night, mostly nightmares? If you are looking for an activity to do, my vote is to try rugby, ? you won?t be disappointed
Seniors vs. College Apps: The Ultimate Battle
By Brendan Dougherty ?23
Just imagine you?re playing in a basketball game To be more specific, it is Prep vs La Salle, the PCL Championship is on the line, and you have 5 fouls with 2 minutes left You have been guarding La Salle?s best player all game, and holding him to ameasly score The ball isinbounded and hedrives on you Hegoesup, you go up You get all ball, a completely clean block Whistle You have just been called for your sixth foul, and have to be taken out La Salle goes on to win with you helplessly sitting on the bench
I apologize for the lengthy analogy, but now imagine this championship game is your decision letter eventually coming in from your dream school Thisisthe fear that the senior class is going through right now. The potential of not getting accepted, or losing the game, and you sitting on the bench, thinking of what you could have done differently to changeyour fate
Seniors were asked to do muchof theheavy liftinginthe first two monthsof school The entire Common App resume
was achieved with alacrity over ample time, and the application process for each school was the next step up Now, the task at hand is striving for the most eloquent and stylish short piece of writing, better known as the infamous supplemental Oh, and then we haveto do it again And again For however many schools we are applying to, and for however many different supplemental essays said school requires
If you think this is where it ends, good one Try balancing that with the everyday rigor of school life Granted, many of the seniors have opted for the least rigorous of schedules for this exact reason, to be able to manage this Regardless, there are still many students who haveput themselvesin numerous APs and challenging classes, creating more stress for thecollegeprocess
Try balancing thetough class schedule that a Prep student
has, adding in the college application process, and then adding in the plenty of sports and extracurricular activities that the school prides itself on, and rightfully so Imagine you?reavarsity captain, or you lead a club, or you?re on student council or have a job Anything that takesup significant timeisadding morestress to the pot Luckily for the applicant, those activities and those stressors are exactly what many colleges are looking for in their potential stu-
dents
Nothing can ultimately top how much stress is put on us seniors after the applications are sent The constant worrying if your top school wants you back The relentless doubts that creep into the back of your mind, telling you that you could havedonemore But the reality is that you did try your hardest and that in most cases, thePrep doesagreat job of not just preparing their young students for college, but for thecollegethey want to attend In a sense, the stress is worth it The stress can ultimately be rewarding Right now in the lull of many Early Decision and Early Action applications being finished up, the ones that are usually for most students? top schools, awaiting a response, we all have to be reminded that we have put in the work and that wehavedoneour best
The process might stink, and you?ll probably still think that in a year when you are at that school you strived to attend But you?ll say to yourself that it was worth it because you?re happy to be there
A Prep Rugby Ball sitting at at the first game of the season
The Common App is just a fraction of the work seniors are doing right now, along with additional supplemental essays, separate applications, possible school interviews, and of course regular schoolwork

College Football Overview 2022: The Chase for Greatness
By Christian Corr '25
Before every College Football season, each fanbase says, ?Thisisour year?By the end of theseason only threeor four teams actually have a chance for it to be their year This season it will be no different There are three tiers of teams that I believe have a chance to make it to the College Football Playoffs and win theNational Championship
Tier one, thelocks: Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State Alabama led by reigning Heisman trophy winner Bryce Young has proven that he can manipulate any given defense This team may not have their usual speedy wide receivers of the past, but the way their defense plays that may not matter Will Anderson Jr looks like the best defensive player in thecountry and will beatop pick in this year's draft As long as Bryce Young can stay healthy and this defense can keep Alabama in close games against top teams, their chances of winning are relatively good The defending champions, the Georgia Bulldogs look fantastic This team always seems to have one of the best defensive units every year and this year is no different Jalen Carter is a stud at defensivetackleand therest of the squad is filled with talent like corner Kelee Ringo who sealed the championship game with a pick- six Offensively Stenson Bennet isn?t going to wow you like Young and Stroud, but he has proven he can get thejob done especially facing adversity The X factor for this Bulldog offense is the tight end, Brock Bowers If he can perform, the offense will be able to do just enough and the defense will take care of the rest Finally, Ohio State Heisman hopeful CJ Stroud lookslikeoneof thebest quarterbacks in the nation and he shows no signs of slowing down This offense is loaded with skill with Jaxon SmithNjiba and Marvin Harrison Jr ?21 at receiver, thistwo-headed monster is a nightmare for all opposing defenses Running backs TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams, who scored fivetouchdownsagainst Rutgersarealsoathreat Sofar the defense has looked great but has not played any strong offenses For Ohio State to be successful in the playoffs their defense must be consistently good
Tier two, the party crashers: Michigan, Clemson, USC, and Tennessee Michigan is out for revenge after getting embarrassed by Georgiain last year's Orange Bowl JJ McCarthy beat out last year'sstarter Cade McNamarafor thestarting job McCarthy hasn?t played terribly, but he hasn?t exactly played to thelevel of the other elite quarterbacks An important part of this Michigan offense is running back Blake Corum, who has been dominant this year Corum scored five touchdowns against Connecticut and went for 243 yards and two touchdowns on thirty carriesagainst Maryland Michigan has a top defense in the country and they need to continue this dominance because they can?t have a repeat of last year's massacre against Georgia Clemson isled by the dual- threat quarterback DJ Uiagalelei He is no Trevor Lawrence, but he is more than capableof getting thejob done through the air and with his legs Uiagalelei and thisClemson team have definitely improved from last year, where we did not see the dominant Clemson that we are used to This run game led by Will Shipley and Uiagalelei has proven to be lethal, especially in the red zone Shipley is a touchdown machine and Uiagalelei is a force to be reckoned with when he starts to run This Clemson defense has not been as dominant as the other top teams in the country and they will need to improve it if they want a chance to win thewholething USC isan in-
teresting team The offensive genius Lincoln Riley has helped lead the Trojans to a top-10 ranking after last year's awful season finishing 4-8 Riley came over from Oklahoma and brought some of their playerswith him OneisHeisman candidateCaleb Williams Last year Williamscamein for Oklahoma during the red river showdown against Texas and helped lead a comeback as a truefreshman to win thegame Hisdominancehasnot stopped at USC First, his counterpart in thebackfield TravisDyeisa talented back, and together the run threat is real in Southern California The potential firstround pick Jordan Allison isan absolute weapon on the outside Allison a transfer from Pitt burst onto the scene last year with 100 catches, over 1500yards, and18total touchdowns So far theWilliams-toAllison connection has proven to be deadly with their best game coming against rival Stanford where Allison went for 172 yards and two touchdowns on seven catches USC is not a great defensive team and for them to beat an Alabama or Georgia- type team they aregoing to haveto make it a shootout Tennessee has been dominant for most of the year With wins against talented teams like Florida, Pitt, and LSU they have proven to be a true threat Hendon Hooker has dominated SEC defenses left and right and his outstanding play has put his name into the Heisman conversation Hooker has proven that he can spread the ball
around with three different receivers having 100- plus yard games Most notably is Bru McCoy who went for 140 yards on 7 catches during the slaughtering of the LSU Tigers This run game is also no joke with a dangerous backfield that contains Jaylen Wright, Jabari Small, and the Heisman candidate Hooker This offense has looked unstoppable and looks like it can compete with anyone The issue with this team is their defense The defense dominated LSU only holding them to thirteen points but against Florida and Pitt they have let up 25 plus points in each game If this team wants to make it to the playoffs they have to continue to dominate on offense and their defense needstobeonpoint
The final tier, the upset watch: Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, and Penn State These teams have little to no chance of making it to the playoffs If they were to make it everything would have to go perfectly First Oklahoma State, with Spencer Sanders at the helm the Cowboys, have always been a consistently good team Sandershasproven himself over the last few years to be a quarterback who can get the job done He has solid offensive weapons like Brennen Presely and Brandon Johnson The reason this team probably won?t make the playoffs is their defense The Big 12 isn?t known to be a great defensive conference and Oklahoma State is an example of this Letting up 44 pointsto Central
Michigan is not a good sign of achampionship-typeteam For this team to make it to the playoff they will have to win out against tough teams like Oklahoma, Kansas, and Kansas State Ole Miss is a long shot at making the playoffs Quarterback Jaxon Dart isn?t going to impressyou with big yardage games, but he can managethisoffense So far the strength of this team has been their run game Dart may not overwhelm you with his arm but he makes that up with his legs It also helps that he hasa deadly tandem in his backfield with Zach Evansand Quinshon Judkinswho havetheability to go for over 100 yards in any given game The reason this team is a long shot at making the playoffs is because of their defense They aren?t as talented as other teams in the SEC and this damages Ole Miss?s chance of making the playoff As of right now, Penn State?s chances of winning the whole thing are minuscule Both sides of the ball are talented and filled with stars The only problem is the quarterback situation Don?t get me wrong, Sean Clifford is good and hasproven that hecan win games but hehasn?t proven he can win big games If Penn State wants to make it to the playoffs they must put in the true freshman Drew Allar Allar a five- star quarterback coming out of Ohio, was the fourth-best quarterback in his class Allar is more talented than Clifford and is the better option if this team wants to go anywhere A fellow five- star freshman is Nick Singleton Singleton, who was ranked as the best running back in his class, has shown how dominant he can be by drawing comparisons to former Penn State legend Saquan Barkley This defense looked a little shaky in week one against Purdue, allowing 31 points Since then, they have been nothing short of dominant With skilled players like a potential first-round pick, cornerback Joey Porter Jr and true freshman Abdul Carter on this defense, they are a force to be reckonedwith
College Football hasn?t seemed thiswideopen in years and it will undoubtedly be an entertaining finish to the season astheseteamsfight for the four spots

College Football hasn't seemed this wide open in years, making for an undoubtedly entertaining season
Philadelphia's Red October Lives On
fromPHILLIESon
one ThePhilliesjumped out to an early lead with a home run by Bryce Harper that was sent to the moon They tacked on onemorerun in thefifth win a sacrifice fly by Kyle Schwarber Thiswasall therun support Aaron Nola would need as he pitched six and two-thirds shutout innings against a dangerous Cardinal offense Themost stressful part of this game came in the bottom of the eight With two men on and only one out, Seranthony Dominguez came in and struck out thetwo MVP candidates, Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado on back-to-back at-bats Zach Eflin would close the game and the Phillies moved on to Atlanta
Going into Atlanta the chancesof thePhillieswinning thisserieswereslim On paper, Atlantahad better pitching and abetter lineup But it?sOctober and all it takesisgetting hot at the right time Game one looked likeasurewin for most of the game as the Phillies led 7 to 3 after five innings Ranger Suarez only went three innings in his first postseason start Hepitched himself into a few bases-loaded jams but he got himself out of them and this proved to be significant later in the game An unsung hero in game one was Seranthony Dominguez, as he went two no-hit scoreless innings against the top of the dangerous Braves lineup The Braves would inch closer in
the ninth with a three-run bomb from Matt Olson but that's all that would happen as the Fightens took game one Game two was all Braves as the Phillies were shut out by Kyle Wright and company Wheeler pitched well until Hoskins let a ball through that he should have knocked down causing Atlanta to score This game ended as the Phillies were shut out and the series was heading to the City of Brotherly Love
Gamethreewasthefirst time thePhillieshad ahomeplayoff game in eleven years It was fitting that the longest-tenured Phillie Aaron Nola was starting Through the first two
innings, it looked like it was going to be a pitcher's duel as Bravesrookiephenom Spenser Strider and Nola both looked unhittable However, in the third, the Phillies struck first and struck quickly With one out and one man on Strider threw over to first but the ball got away allowing Brandon Marsh to move to third on the error This put rookie Bryson Stott in a high-pressure situation and the young star came in clutch as he ripped a double down the line giving the Phils the lead After an intentional walk to Kyle Schwarber, Hoskins came up to bat and smacked a ball to deep left giving the Phillies a
four-run lead Strider would be taken out of the game after giving up a single The first pitch Bryce Harper saw from relief pitcher Dylan Lee was launched into deep right giving Aaron Nola all the run support he needed Nola would go on to pitch six innings only allowing one unearned run Philly wouldgoontoendthree morerunsin theseventh asthe Phillies would win 9 to 1 in dominant play Game four gave the Phillies an opportunity to clinch an NCLS spot for the first time since 2010 The mid-season acquisition, Noah Syndergaard pitched three innings only giving up one hit which was a
home run, and had three strikeouts This turned out to be a bullpen game for both teams as Braves pitcher
Charlie Morton was injured after two innings of work allowing a three-run home run to another mid-season acquisition Brandon Marsh
The scoring did not stop here as JT Realmuto would hit an inside-the-park home run to lead off the third The Braves did score a few runs but the game broke out with a three-run sixth inning that would put the Phils up five entering the last three innings
The Braves struck back with a home run, but the reigning MVP Bryce Harper countered that with one of his own Seranthony Dominguez came in to shut the Braves down in the ninth, striking out the side and putting an end to their season with a 3-1 series win for thePhillies
At the time of printing this, the Phillies are set to face the Houston Astros in a best-of-seven World Series The Phillies have already crushed everyone's expectations of them this season and are hungry for more No matter the outcome, this payoff run has shown the city of Philadelphia that baseball is back and that they arehereto stay What thisteam does for the next few years could be special and it looks like it could do some damage in the upcoming years
Tua Tagovailoa Injury and Aftermath
By Dan Gordon '24
MIAMI - When people used to think about Tua Tagovailoa, they thought of a young quarterback with sky- high potential Now, Tuaisthecenter of a huge NFL controversy surrounding him playing on Thursday Night Football against theBengals, despitethe fact that he was injured only four days prior How did this whole situation unfold, and what are repercussions on the leagueasawhole?
This story starts on Sunday, September 25, 2022 when, with 2:28 left in the 2nd quarter, Bills linebacker Matt Milano pushed Tagovailoa after throwing theball When Tagovailoa made impact with the ground, he suffered whiplash and it never appeared that he had any sort of pain in his back It also appeared that Tagovailoa went into the ?fencing position? in the Bills game, and, according to the concussion protocol at the time, that meant a player was out of thegamewithnoexceptions But somehow, Tagovailoa was still cleared to play
onThursday Night Football
On Thursday, September 29th when theMiami Dolphins faced the Cincinnati Bengals, Tagovailoa sustained another head injury Thisoccurred with about six minutes left in the second quarter, when Bengals? defensive tackle Josh Tupou sacked the quarterback He slammed Tagovailoa to the ground, and when he hit the ground, Tagovailoa?s arms were locked and frozen in a fencing position He remained in this position on the ground until eventually, he was carted off thefield on astretcher After being carted off, he was transferred to theUniversity of Cincinnati Medical Center by an ambulance Tua wasadmitted out of the Medical Center later and heflew back with his team
The state of the NFL and NFLPA after Tua?s injury is in some question due to legal reasons, but, so far, the Miami Dolphins? unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant (UNC) has been fired by the NFLPA by using itscollectively bargained right to do so Although the
UNC had taken correct procedure in handling Tua?s initial injury against the Buffalo Bills, theoutcomewasonethat was not in the best ideals of both the NFL and the NFLPA There has been some revision to the NFL concussion protocol, with ataxia, thelossof full control of the movements of the body, being added to a
mandatory list of symptoms that prevent aplayer from participationinagame
There are also legal issues involved in the aftermath of this whole situation Although there is some indication that Tua will not sue anyone, and also that playersarecontractually binded not to sue for in-
juries relating to the head or brain, there could be a potential lawsuit filed against the Dolphins, thedoctorsinvolved, the NFL, and the NFLPA if there are long term neurological injuries sustained by Tua However, there would be potential obstacles in a lawsuit, including arbitration, which statesthat Tuawould first have to explain his potential remedies under the CBA A case would be stronger if it were against the NFL and the NFLPA due to a lackluster concussion protocol that potentially jeopardized his own health Overall even if a lawsuit would be hard to file, it still could be a possibility if Tua has sustained any longtermdamage
The whole Tua situation would have been very preventable if the NFL prioritized player safety regarding concussions and their protocol Hopefully, the NFL and the NFLPA can usethisasalesson to prioritize player safety so that a situation like this will never happen again

A Broken Barstool: Sports Betting
By CJ Weipz '23
As summer fades into fall and Americansall over thenation tuneinto thebeginningsof the NFL, NBA, and NHL seasons, a group of even harder workers begins to sprout up from their proverbial nests under theground to makeastriking appearance once again The sportsbooks TV screens all across the bars in America being filled with money lines and spreads all while they try and show the latest re-run of ?Pardon The Interruption?, Scott Van Pelt showing a ?Bad Beat? on SportsCenter late at night, and advertisements for the latest app in a long line of money-stealing machinessaturate the sports sphere with some of the most dangerous messaging to young children andteensalike
Assportsgambling beginsto get bigger and bigger and reach a wider and wider audience people have begun to question what kind of effects this has on the younger generation According to the International Center for Youth Gambling Problems and HighRisk Behaviorsat McGill University, about 60%- 80% of teens have gambled for money within the last year, with 6%8% of that group who areat an increased risk of developing some sort of addiction These figurescan beattributed in part to the undeveloped brains of adolescence In an interview
with Dr William Gillespie, a guidancecounselor at thePrep, he stated, ?Decision making is driven by impulse in adolescence They don?t typically make decisions that look five steps down the line and gambling feeds right into that ? Being exposed to gambling at such a young age can have some dangerous effects in not only the short term, but the longtermaswell
Sports gambling, when done in moderation and with careful planning, can beasafeand fun experience for adults When adults practice safe gambling habits, such as placing a limit on the amount of money that can be spent in a night, these practices might make the experience a little better and healthier inthelongterm
Oneof thebiggest reasonsas to why sports gambling has
76ers Season Opener
By Kieran Hicks '23
PHILADELPHIA - As the Philliesareinthemidst of their playoff run, the 76ers began their season with a loss to the Boston Celtics After a second round exit to the Miami Heat last year, the Sixers are hoping to make the conference finals for the first time since their run in 2001 While the season would have been much better starting off with a win, things weren?t all badopeningnight
James Harden was the most noticeableimprovement, dropping 35 points with efficient shooting, along with 7 assists and 8 rebounds He was playing like he was back in Houston, blowing by defenders and shooting stepback 3 pointers His playmaking was also to note, with difficult passes being dished out at different momentsinthegame
Joel Embiid brought 26 points and 15 rebounds, but took some time to get started, only getting one point in the first quarter Being double teamed on most possessions, he wasn?t as effective as the team would haveliked Heoften got theball at thetop of the key and ended up turning it over or wasting a possession
TyreseMaxey and TobiasHarrisboth put up decent numbers too, getting 21 and 18 respectively, while also being able to shoot the three and get to the basket However, in the third quarter the Celtics began taking advantage of numerous turnoversand lazy defense and outscored the Sixers by 10 pointsthat quarter
Doc Rivers? rotations were questionable, taking out 3 of the Sixers top scorers during crucial 3rd quarter minutes where the Celtics gained their lead Danuel HouseJr, thenew acquisition from the Jazz, was left to guard Jason Tatum, and the former blue devil imposed his will on the Sixers Matisse Thybulle was left out of the roster, presumably so that a player like House could provide more on offense House, however, only scored one point, andThybulle?sdefensive skill set would?ve likely slowed down the avalanche of points by Boston Paul Reed also didn?t get minutes, instead former Clipper and 2021 Sixth man of theyear Montrezl Harrell played center off the bench All in all, it wasn?t a terrible loss, but the team has room for improvement if they want to make a finals run
become as big as it has is because of the massive amounts of advertisements created by different sports betting apps, such as FanDuel or DraftKings And aswith everything in this world, the issue has taken over the social media sphere ?It is impossible to eliminate the impact of social media from any societal problem It?s so pervasive? Dr Gillespie said One of the biggest offenders of using social media to promote their sportsbook is Barstool Sports, one of the largest mediaoutletson theinternet at thismoment intime
With affiliate accounts coveringhundredsof collegecampuses and major sports cities, Barstool and its president, Dave Portnoy, are sitting on the top of the world However, between the interviews with TikTokersand thegolfing clips of more- than- slightly intoxi-
cated frat bros, Barstool loves to promoteitssportsbook Asa part of their pattern of posting, they post a segment featuring one of their biggest personalities, Big Cat, in which they talk about upcoming games (normally NFL) and their different bets(money line, spread, over/under? ) These kinds of segments and discrete advertisements are unethical at best and dangerous at worst They not only promote the idea of sports betting to their younger demographic, who are not legally able to gamble yet, but they also romanticizeit, showing off how luxuriousthat kind of lifestyleisthrough their extravagant and over-the-topattitudestowardsit From my perspective, this seems like a shady misuseof their influence over the younger generation to get the familiar and interested in creating, what could potentially be, risky habits While Barstool may not have any legal obligation to protect or limit these types of videos being produced, it is very unlikely that the higher- ups at Barstool are oblivious to their actual demographic that they do not seethat thiskind of behavior can be dangerous and exploitativeto agroup of people who are already seeing an increase in gambling addictions as it becomes more and moremainstream
In defense of Barstool, they do their best to show through graphics that what they are
promoting is for people of age and they also display thegambling hotline very prominently throughout the entirety of the segment And while they may not haveany legal responsibilitiesto limit their promotion of sports gambling on their page, the problems that can arise when young people are introduced to those sportsbooks are immense Also, they are not the only ones who are doing this as well ESPN has made sportsbetting aprominent feature on some of their secondary channels and have made it a key talking point in someof their talk shows Other internet personalities are to blame as well, such as Pat McAfee, whoseentireprogram is sponsored by FanDuel, and all have the same issues as Barstool
With all this being said, I do not think that Barstool is an evil media conglomerate who wants to destroy the world through sportsbetting, but I do think that it is important for people to question what they arebeing shown and makesafe choices Practicing safe gambling habits and reaching out for help when thingsstart to go out of control are great places to start when talking about reducing theamount of gambling addictsintheworld
To conclude, if you or someone you know has a gambling issue, call 1- 800- GAMBLER to get help now
Union Enter MLS Playoffs
By Joe Griffin '24
CHESTER - Philadelphia sports at the current moment are on a high However, one teamin thecity isalwaysoverlooked: The Union Realistically Red October the Eagles to go undefeated, the Sixers to make it past the second round, and the Flyers to have a winningrecordiswhat every fan in Philadelphiawants
I was able to speak with HeadCoachJim Curtinregarding his team and the postseason I asked Jim Curtinhow the players were preparing for the game against Cincinnati, knowing it was a formidable opponent to them He said, ?We have home- field advantage, which isbig, and wemust utilize that We?ve been sitting around waiting on a bye, and they are coming off their first playoff victory of all time, so they will have confidence Hopefully, wecan beorganized like we have been all year in defense and recognize that we will create chances over the 90 minutes Then, hopefully, we cantakecareof business?
ThePhiladelphia Union have the Goalkeeper of the Year in Andre Blake, the best centerback duo in Jack Elliott and
DPOY Jakob Glesnes, and the best fullback in Kai Wagner, who was nominated for DPOY, for the defense In offense, the Union have the young trio of homegrown talentsQuinn Sullivan, Jack McGlynn, and Paxten Aaronson, who are all on the USYNT They are the future of
