n our society, many things have worked well for a long time, so there’s no need to keep reinventing the wheel. At Arizmendi Ecovillage, we are including many of these, like cohousing for social sustainability and ecovillage for neighborhoods that are ecologically sustainable as well.

Of course, they need to work economically too, so we are creating Mondragon-style, worker-owned co-ops with fulfilling, living wage jobs, continually reusing the money it takes to build the community and increasing both affordability and community spirit.

Organizational governance is an area where these movements are finding new opportunities for workability. But how do you come up with that perfect balance of agency and communion? After trying both hierarchy and anarchy at one time or another with decidedly mixed results, many are now taking on using sociocracy, a proven method for effectively working together that is designed to assure that everyone’s voice is heard. So that is one area of critical community reform

that we are learning about at Arizmendi.

Terraforming is another, a term that usually refers to making uninhabitable planets like Mars habitable to Earth lifeforms. The irony is that our planet is quickly moving in the direction of being uninhabitable for many of those lifeforms, including us.

Curiously enough, human beings for millennia have already been actively engaged in terraforming this planet.

Evidently, tribal societies in the Amazon basin artificially tipped the balance of nature in their favor by cultivating and selectively planting trees in the vicinity of their villages and along pathways between settlements. They even created sustainably fertile soils referred to as ‘terra preta’.

At Arizmendi we realize that we must do the same so we are creating buildings and other structures and systems that are part and parcel of a blue-green, terraformed, living ecology of the future.

.B. West Contracting (“West Contracting”) has grown significantly since it opened its doors in 1956 to service the asphalt needs of the housing and commercial construction boom in the St. Louis Area. West Contracting started installing driveways and parking lots and gradually became involved in municipal, state, and federal highway projects over the years. They have two convenient offices to service St. Louis and the Eastern Missouri region.

West Contracting operates three (3) asphalt plants located in Pacific, House Springs, and Bourbon. During the “spike” of crude oil pricing in the mid-2000’s, West invested heavily in their plants to accept Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) and roofing asphalt shingles (RAS). Reclaiming and reusing existing asphalt pavement and shingles reduces the amount of virgin asphalt cement needed for the construction of new roadways.

Asphalt Pavement is made up of 95% aggregate and 5% asphalt cement. When reclaimed asphalt pavement is incorporated into new pavement the asphalt cement in the old pavement is reactivated becoming part of

Now in its 28th year, the festival, which began as a small, grassroots gathering, today welcomes tens of thousands of guests, largest by far in the midwest welcoming guests to celebrate, learn and enjoy themselves on the beautiful grounds of one of St. Louis’ treasures, the Muny in Forest Park.

For the first time in recent years, the St. Louis Earth Day festival will span the entire weekend.

The Festival will be open Saturday AND Sunday, April 22-23, from 11 am - 5 pm.

Guests have the opportunity to participate in a variety of hands-on educational activities, meet area nonprofits that share the mission of Earth

Day, learn about sustainable products and services offered by local businesses, and shop unique wares from local and global artisans committed to sustainability and fair trade.

Enjoy original music performed by local artists on our Main Stage in the Earth Day Cafe as you chow down on some amazing foods. Over twenty food and beverage vendors will be serving up diverse, local cuisine and drinks.

Schlafly will have a selection of local brews on tap, including their Organic IPA, which is brewed in honor of Earth Day. Food trucks,

BBQ and more beer will be served in the Pit Stop, near the rock climbing wall. 70% of the food vendors are certified by our own Green Dining Alliance, and the remainder are adhering to strict standards of sourcing, service, and quality, in line with Earth Day principles. Festival-goers can take the “Earth Day Challenge” by bringing a reusable bag, refillable water bottle and using low-impact transportation, such as Metro Transit, to get to Forest Park. Visitors who accomplish two of the three challenges receive an eco-friendly prize. A group bike ride to the Festival will be organized this year by Trailnet and Big Shark from each of the Schlafly brew pubs on Sunday. Join the Schlafly “Slow Roll” to the Festival and receive an extra prize!

Donations are also accepted at drop-off boxes located at Remains. Remains also processes post-industrial textile materials from local and nationwide companies.

Sponsoring fundraising events is quite easy for the participating organizations. Remains transports their trailers to each event location and picks them up whenever and wherever necessary. Clothing and shoe collection events can take place for any duration, such as weekends or for several weeks.

So, what happens once the materials get to the recycler?

Remains consolidates and bales the materials by type for the enduse market. Within 30 to 90 days (or less), further sorting, disinfecting (depending on end-use), baling and shipping is complete. With Remains’ wide range of customers, more clothing gets reused or repurposed than by the average textile recycler. What happens after it leaves the recycler? Generally, 45% of clothing is reused or recycled; 30% is repurposed into wiping cloths; and 20% is converted back into fiber for various industrial applications, such as home insulation, carpet padding and filler for

he U.S. generates an average of 25 billion pounds of clothing, footwear, accessories, towels, bedding, drapery, etc. each year. Of the textiles discarded, 3.8 billion pounds are recovered for recycling and reuse; roughly 12 pounds per person per year. The textile recycling industry is constantly growing to divert massive amounts of waste from landfills.

A local textile recycler, Remains, Inc., has been consolidating and processing larger and larger volumes and varieties of materials for more than 30 years. Each week, Remains processes 5 tractor-trailer loads of materials for recycling, reuse, repurposing or by converting them into fiber for new markets. The evergrowing volume of discarded textiles warrants a better awareness of the importance of recycling clothing. Now, with it more convenient to donate and recycle clothing, it’s much easier to participate and help decrease the impact of textile waste.
