Left To My Own Devices
M
y young adult daughters love to make fun of me and my awkwardness when left to my own devices. I have always been behind the curve when it comes to electronics. I like to think of it as being old-fashioned and traditional, but apparently I am a techno-dinosaur. It all started with my first 35mm camera. It was a Pentax K1000 and it was wonderfully simple. No bells or whistles, no automatic anything. It was a lens and film. That’s all. Oh, it did have shutter speeds. But nothing digital or computerized. I had to think about the light, the exposure and the composition. There was no Photoshop back then. Any enhancement to a photo came in the darkroom with burning and dodging under the enlarger. The camera was a tool, the photographer was the artist. The cameras of today have become the artist and the photographer a technician. And in fact, people hardly use cameras anymore. They are snapping photos with phones. Everything went digital a long time ago and point and shoot, selfies, and party pix have become the norm. Used to be the photojournalist had to try to get to the scene in time to capture that one great photograph and “capture the moment.” These days they are
scooped by everyone on the scene and their smart phones. It took me a while to get a smart phone. I lagged behind everyone in my family and got all their hand-me-down cell phones for a while. And then I realized, I am a grampa now and I need those pictures of my grandson. So they took me to the smart phone store and got me the most basic smart phone available. They were sure I was not “smart” enough for the more advanced device. And I pretty much proved them wrong. I have done quite well with my “introductory” phone. It takes photos and I can get my emails and I even use it for phone calls once in a while. I play Words With Friends and check my Facebook. I have to admit that Facebook is pretty neat. A great way to keep in touch with people without having to actually see or talk to them in person. Not sure if it has made me more antisocial or if I was antisocial before I got the smart phone. I know I am still way behind the curve when it comes to personal hand held devices. But it takes some time for me to make a change. I do get attached to my devices. I still use outdated computer programs (which our magazine’s printer keeps reminding me). But like so many things in life. It’s hard to give up on something you know and become comfortable with. Maybe it’s loyalty. Maybe it’s comfort. Or maybe it’s just the laziness to learn something new. I feel like I have already given in to the modern world of technology. The photo of me in this column is a selfie, and the cover art I did in Photoshop. So you might say I have come a long way. Or have I? Technology changes faster than a chameleon in a Crayola factory. I do know how to text, although I keep calling it email. And never while I drive. Gotta go, the dang thing is buzzing and dinging and I can’t get it out of my pants pocket... Can you hear me now? The Art of Relating Christine Kniffen, MSW, LCSW
What kind of love do you Want?
L
ove is not supposed to make you feel bad, rejected, unhappy or stressed out. Period. Stop selling yourself short.
HEALTHY LOVE PARTNER
Supportive- supports your endeavors and wants to see you grow as a person. Validating- your partner validates your feelings as logical (different from always agreeing with them). Communicative-willing to talk things out, even if hard at first, to resolve issues and move forward. Feelings of Well-Being – You feel secure, loved, happy and able to focus on you. Self-esteem- Your self-esteem has room to grow in a healthy relationship. Your Partner – he or she knows they want to be in a committed relationship and have no trouble clearly relaying this to you through words and actions.
UNHEALTHY LOVE PARTNER
Continuously Unsupportive – offers no encouragement or even resists most of your endeavors
towards personal growth and improvement, often driven by their insecurity. Non-Validating- your partner seems unable or unwilling to try to understand your feelings. Resists Communication - becomes defensive, dismissive or repeatedly states, “I don’t know” to seemly simple questions regarding his or her feelings. Feelings of Anxiety/Stress - walking on eggshells (holding your feelings back), exhausted from overly focusing on the state of your relationship. Low Self-esteem- You feel rejected. Your self-esteem is repeatedly chipped away when you stay in something that is unhealthy. Your Partner – he or she avoids the “commitment issue”, never bringing up the future. The “I love you” statements are far and few between. Worse yet, they can’t seem to decide if you are even the “right one” for them, but they want you around anyway. 12 Strategies To Enhance Your Immune System!
W
by Dr. Amy Davis, MD
e are constantly exposed to potential infectious agents like viruses and bacteria that cause infections such as colds, flu, bronchitis and ear infections. The immune system defends us from invaders and repairs the damage that occurs with infections. When the immune system is weak infections may occur frequently and be difficult to resolve. There has been a resurgence of infections like pertussis, emergence of antibiotic resistant superbugs and rising autoimmune diseases. Today it is very common for young children to have many ear infections requiring repeated treatment with antibiotics which alter the gut microbiome and further weaken the immune system. Parents often express concern that their child is “sick all the time” and have frequently been on many courses of antibiotics. When I support their immune systems they no longer get sick and they often become “the healthiest one in the family.” The good news is that there are effective natural options to enhance your immune system and to naturally treat infections. What can you do? Get plenty of Sleep: Adequate sleep is essential for a healthy immune system. Reduce Stress: High stress levels negatively impact the immune system. Find time to breath, stretch, meditate and laugh! A balanced life is essential to optimal health. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables which are
rich in vitamins, phytonutrients and fiber that support the immune system. Consider green smoothies or juicing. Exercise regularly. If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation. Take steps to reduce your exposure to infectious agents. Wash your hands frequently and keep your hands away from your face. Take Probiotics to support the intestinal microbiome. A healthy immune system begins with a healthy gut. Take Digestive enzymes which help to make nutrients easier to absorb. Herbs like olive leaf, garlic, oregano oil, pau d arco and ginseng provide anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal benefits. Vitamins and minerals including Vitamins C, D, B6, folic acid and Zinc are essential for healthy immune function. Phytonutrients and antioxidants boost the immune system and can be taken as supplements or consumed in a healthy diet. Medicinal mushrooms like shiitake and reishi varieties have immune enhancing properties. Best of Health! Dr. Amy Davis M.D. Crossing Back to Health 11477 Olde Cabin Rd. Medical Acupuncture on Large Intestine Meridian:
Ancient Romans and US Army Targets Demons
I
Training By Simon Yu, MD
magine divinity, humanity, and demons in a context of homeopathy, herbs, and drugs. What if I say parasites are like demons? Parasites are deceptive, evil, wiggly, shadowy characters. They literally suck and drain your energy, hijack your mind, and take over your will power. If we substitute the word “parasites with “demons, you can look at the history of mankind and medicine from quite a different perspective. Parasites are one of the major overlooked medical problems along with hidden dental problems. We must ask, “Why are people getting sicker with mysterious illnesses? Why are they not responding to current standards of medical therapies? Parasites are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality on a global scale. Well over 4 billion people are infected with parasites according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) and WHO (World Health Organization) based on the standard stool and blood tests for parasites. According to CDC, 1.6 billion people are infected with Ascaris with over 60,000 deaths/year, 200 million people are infected by Flukes and Schistosomes with 20 million people dying from complications related to these parasites (Foundation of Parasitology by Roberts and Janovy), and 250-659 million people are infected with malaria with 1-2 million of these people dying every year. These statistics are based on the standard stool test for ova and parasites. The real magnitudes of the problems are much greater than CDC and WHO estimated because they are relying on the tests of stool and blood alone which I don’t believe to provide the total picture. Ancient Romans failed, as reported in the Journal of Parasitology, to slow the spread of parasites despite the introduction of public multi-seat toilets, handwashing stations, sewage systems, and aqueducts for safe drinking water, all of which were built two thousand years ago. Romans were fond of a fish sauce called “garum. This sauce was not cooked. They dipped bread into it. It was traded across the Roman Empire. And fish tapeworm eggs were widespread in Europe during the Roman Empire, according to paleoparasitologist, Piers Mitchell at the University of Cambridge. Coincidence or connection? My firsthand experience using prescribed parasite medication came in the year 2001. I was deployed to Bolivia for the U.S. Army as a Reserve medical officer. We had a small medical, dental, and veterinary team. Our medical team extensively used the cheapest parasite medications provided by the U.S. Army for about 10,000 Bolivian native Indians. Those medicines were pyrantel pamoate and mebendazol. I wrote about my experience in Bolivia in my book, Accidental Cure. Before Bolivia in 2001, I used homeopathic and natural parasite remedies with moderate success based on Acupuncture Meridian Assessment (AMA). I was well aware of hidden parasite problems. When I started using prescribed parasite medications from my experiences in Bolivia, there were dramatic responses that I never expected were possible. When I was treating my patients with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)-like intestinal symptoms, which were detected based on disturbances on the large intestine meridian, some of my patients told me, not only did their IBS symptoms get better but also their asthma disappeared, eczema or psoriasis got resolved, recurrent pneumonia did not return, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia got better, anxiety/depression improved, fever of unknown origin went away, migraine headache resolved for the first time in many years, brain lesions disappeared on MRIs on MS (Multiple Sclerosis) patients, sometimes tumors shrank, and so many other medical conditions improved. This information was not taught in my medical school or Internal Medicine training. The Large Intestine meridian is paired with the Lung meridian and the paired circuitry of the Stomach and Spleen meridian.
I was not treating these conditions but just treating for parasites based on the disturbance of the large intestine meridian. I was treating with parasite medications based on 30 years of medical practice and my U.S. Army military experience in Bolivia. Parasites are so pervasive and yet so difficult to detect by our modern medical science. I have written many articles about parasites. It is not wise to rely exclusively on the standard stool test or blood test to detect parasites. We need to embrace and understand the concepts of subtle Energy Fields, Matrix, Prana, and Meridians that have been described in ancient civilizations. Recently, I read, the Process of Healing by H. Van Gelder, DO, ND. He is a Dutchman, born in Indonesia, grew up in Asia, worked in India, and educated in Australia and England. He became a medical mystic and wrote in this book that homeopathy had been known for thousands of years in India according to the ancient Indian science of Ayur Veda. The story goes, Pythagoras, an Ionian Greek philosopher went to India and studied Ayur Veda. Paracelsus, another mystical scientist of the Middle Ages, experimented based on the manuscripts of Pythagoras. Samuel Hahnemann based his theory of Homeopathy on the books of Paracelsus. If Van Gelder’s writing is correct, the ancient Indian Ayur Veda might be the great grandfather of modern Homeopathy. According to Van Gelder, the Ayur Veda mentions three types of medicine for healing: 1. Divine – Homeopathy 2. Human – Herbs 3. Demonic – Drugs Drugs are only reserved for demonic (“parasites is my interpretation). I have tried homeopathic and natural herbal parasite remedies with moderate success. But when I used correct combinations of prescribed parasite medications in the right sequence (in conjunction with resolving hidden dental problems), there were dramatic responses to many unexpected medical conditions that seemed impossible to cure. I am convinced that deeply imbedded parasites will manifest into many faces of demonic expression of acute and chronic illnesses. Parasite medications, unlike antibiotics, are not covering the symptoms and suppressing the conditions. I am against using medications to cover up symptoms, as promoted by pharmaceutical companies. However, I am convinced that parasite medications have been underutilized because parasites are deceptive, shadowy, and demonic. Drug companies have been recognizing the demand for parasite medications and have been aggressively raising the prices. They are becoming the monetary parasites on the parasites conundrum. Those of you, who might be interested in learning how to measure the subtle energy fields with Acupuncture Meridian Assessment (AMA) and how to detect parasites and hidden dental problems, check my web site for a special training. Join forces like the ancient Romans and the U.S. Army. Two independent sessions of AMA training are scheduled for March 1820th and August 26-28th, 2016. This training is designed for MD, DO, and DDS. Dr. Simon Yu, M.D. is a Board Certified Internist. He practices Internal Medicine with an emphasis on Alternative Medicine to use the best each has to offer. Ask The
HERB LADY
Cathy Schram
Q: Since February is Heart Health Month, what supplements can I take to help protect my heart? A: Cardivoscular disease is a huge problem in this country. You are very smart to think about protecting your heart and prevention rather than waiting until the unthinkable happens. Of course, exercise and diet play a very important role in preventing heart disease. By adding a variety of supplements to support your heart health, you can do quite a bit to help keep your heart healthy. Coenzyme Q10 or Co10 is very important in protecting your heart. CoQ10 is a naturally occurring nutrient found in virtually every cell in the human body. You can also find it in foods such as beef, chicken, pork, sardines, anchovies, mackerel, salmon, broccoli, spinach and nuts. It assists in energy production (ATP) at the cellular level and also functions as a fat-soluble antioxidant inhibiting oxidation of fats in cell membranes. It also guards the body from free radical stress. When CoQ10 levels are low, it has been found that is when heart attacks occur. Research has been shown that there is a strong correlation between the severity of heart failure and low blood and tissue levels of CoQ10. So, since the heart requires the highest amount of ATP activity to support its constant aerobic function, sufficient amounts of CoQ10 are essential for a healthy heart and critical for a failing heart. Hawthorn Berries help improve the tone of the cardiac muscle, improves oxygen uptake by the heart, improves circulation and energizes the heart
Heart Health Supplements cells. This is an excellent choice to help build up the heart muscle. Vitamin E is recommended for heart health. It may help delay heart disease by preventing the formation of blood clots. Keep in mind that there are different forms of Vitamin E and it is recommended that you take a mix of tocopherols and tocotrienols for the best results. Also look for the dalpha form of E, not dl-alpha. It is important to keep in mind that Vitamin E is a blood thinner so if you are on blood thinning medications, consult with your doctor first. B vitamins are helpful in lowering homocysteine levels and B6 may help prevent hardening of the arteries. Magnesium seems to affect the muscle tone of the blood vessels and improves the balance of fats in the blood. Garlic, L-Arginine and Omega 3's are also very effective in keeping the heart healthy. This herb information is for health education purposes only. It is not intended to replace the services of licensed health practitioners. ~ Natural Health Insights ~ Tom’s Story: A Heart Felt Success
F
by TJ Williams, DC, PhD
ebruary is National Heart Health month. I would like to share a heart health story with you. This is the story of Tom. Tom initially came to see us because he was concerned about his weight. His goals were to “lose weight” and “stop heart disease before it starts.” While we too were concerned about his weight, after our consultation and examination, we suspected that he may already have heart disease. Clinical experience has shown us that when people are overweight, there are often underlying health problems. Research indicates that people who are overweight are at increased risk of heart disease. His blood work revealed that his cholesterol numbers were not good, his inflammatory markers for heart disease were high, and his vitamin D level was very low. All of these markers increase the risk of heart disease. In short, Tom’s numbers revealed that he was literally a heart attack waiting to happen and he did not even know it. Like we do with every patient, we presented Tom with the information. We listed his options and we let him decide what he wanted to do. Tom decided that he wanted to take control of his health and, if possible, he wanted to do it
naturally with no medications. We employed several tools to combat his condition. We advised him to consume a Paleolithic style diet. He also took some very specific targeted oral nutrition aimed to help his body heal itself, and he continued his exercise regimen of lifting weights several days per week. At his 3-month follow-up visit, his blood labs revealed that his total cholesterol dropped 33 points (19% decrease), his triglycerides dropped 74 points (43% decrease), his LDL cholesterol dropped 25 points (43% decrease), and his vitamin D improved 30 points (136% increase). And by the way, he lost 40 pounds. Not only did Tom’s lab values improve drastically, he reported having more energy, getting better sleep, and having an increase in his overall sense of well-being. He looked like a brand new man and everyone noticed it. All of this happened in 90 days. As I have stated in previous articles, one step can change the entire course of your life. I am pretty sure that Tom, like all of our patients, would agree. If you are interested in taking control of your health and making sure you live your best life possible give us a call at 314-293-8123 or visit www.theinstituteofnaturalhealth.com.

Women And Heart Health
by Kari Hartel, RD, LD Program Coordinator, Cooking Matters, Operation Food Search
F
ebruary is American Heart Month, and since heart disease is the number one cause of death for women, it’s important to employ strategies now to help prevent it. Simple lifestyle changes, along with getting your numbers checked, can help you stay on top of your heart health. We know that ninety percent of women have a least one risk factor for heart disease, but only one in five women actually considers heart disease the biggest threat to her health. What makes this topic even more complex is that the signs and symptoms of heart disease can often be a bit different for women than they typically are for men. Heart disease results from atherosclerosis, which is a buildup of plaque inside your artery walls. Atherosclerosis is a process that occurs over time, but there are ways to prevent it now. Tips for Heart Health *Be sure to get at least sixty minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each day. *Avoid tobacco. *Cut back on heart-damaging saturated fats that are found in animals products such as full-fat dairy, fatty cuts of meat, fried foods, convenience foods and fast foods. *Incorporate more heart-friendly unsaturated fats, particularly omega-3 fats found in fatty fish, nuts and seeds. *Select foods that are low-sodium or no salt added. *Use more herbs, spices, aromatic vegetables, vinegars, & citrus juices to flavor food instead of salt or butter. *Consume more vegetables and fruits. *Ask about your family history of heart disease or risk factors for heart disease. *Lose weight if you are overweight or obese. For most individuals (excluding some athletes), aim for a healthy body mass index (BMI).
Know Your Numbers *Keep your blood sugar under control. A normal fasting blood glucose level is 70-110 mg/dL. *Keep your blood pressure controlled – normal blood pressure is 120/80 mm/Hg or lower. *Control your cholesterol. A healthy blood cholesterol level is less than 200 mg/dL. More importantly, aim for an HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) of 60 mg/dL or higher. *Get to a healthy weight and maintain it – a normal, healthy BMI is 18.5-24.9. *Monitor triglycerides – a normal level is 150 mg/dL or less, with optimal level less than 100 mg/dL. Warning Signs of a Heart Attack 1. Pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in middle of chest lasting more than a few minutes, or goes away and returns. 2. Pain or discomfort in one or both of your arms, your back, neck, jaw or abdomen. 3. Feeling short of breath, with/without chest discomfort. 4. Suddenly breaking out in a cold sweat or feeling nauseous or lightheaded. 5. While both men and women experience the most common heart attack symptom--chest pain or discomfort-women may be more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, especially shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting or pain in the back, neck, or jaw. Many low-income individuals are at an increased risk for heart disease, obesity and type 2 diabetes caused by poor dietary choices. Traditional Chinese Face Reading: ‘Get Vibrant Energy & Health Now’
Y
by Dr. Carrie Jardine
ou look at a map to reach a destination, so why don’t you look at your personal health map? It’s your FACE! As an office of acupuncture, chiropractic and naturopathy, we evaluate the face with a branch of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) called Mien Shiang or FACE READING. Your face can tell you what supplements you should take, what foods to stay away from, why your back or neck may be hurting and how stressed you really are. In our hour long evaluation, we prioritize your concerns to create a “Get Vibrant Energy & Health Now” health plan for the next year. This will help focus your time, money and energy on correcting the cause of your problems. Mien Shiang or face reading has been done for thousands of years with amazing results in China and the orient. Not only can Face Reading assist you in treating your health problems more naturally, but it can hint at personality traits. Go find a mirror and look at your face right now! Each part of your face relates to an area of the body. Darker colors, acne or bumps mean the organ needs to be cleaned or detoxed. Whiter coloring or wrinkles or saggy skin may mean the corresponding organ is weak and needs support from natural treatments, diet and lifestyle changes to heal. Forehead: This is the colon area. Wrinkles, lines and bumps could indicate dehydration or

the need for probiotics. Puffy eyelids: This is the gallbladder area. Puffiness may indicate gall congestion (or liver if your gallbladder was removed). Nuts, meats and fats may be hard for you to digest and you may get hot flashes from hormone problems. Surgically corrected puffy eyes can revert back to their original appearance without supporting your gallbladder. Puffiness here is common in women and overweight people. Lips: This is the stomach and intestine area. Full lips may be culturally desirable but they are commonly associated with a constipated colon and underactive stomach! This shows up a lot when people suffer with weight loss resistance. Red nose: This is the heart and lungs area. This may indicate you are stressed- emotionally and chemically. This is common when you drink a lot of alcohol, coffee and soda which cause acidity and a sluggish digestive system. Chin: This is the ovaries, uterus and reproductive area. Many women get even adult acne when birth control or extra hormones have been taken. There are natural ways to balance this important system. Text a picture of your face and I’ll call you with a free 15 minute Face Evaluation. I will evaluate the first 10 face pictures I get this month! Don’t keep doing things that don’t help you! Correct the cause and get busy being happy and healthy! Send pictures to: 314-6071038. Visit www.DrCarrieJardine.JIMDO.com.

Black socks They never get dirty The longer you wear them The blacker they get Some day I think I will wash them But something inside me Is saying “Not yet!”
It’s true I don’t wash “sox” every time I wear them, but not because they are all black. I do conserve energy and water – and use mild laundry products – all of which are GREEN commitments. Yay for me! But here’s my little guilty secret: I don’t need to wash often due to having multiple dozens of sox styles to choose from. Many women collect things: Handbags, Jewelry, Husbands, Shoes. In another era, it was Hats women loved to have many of, and sacrificed to get a new one. I acquire vivid insulating footwear. Among those who know me well, my Sock Drawer is a legend: super organized, by color. This in contrast to every other kind of space I occupy (at home, at work) where I manage stuff of all kinds, simply, in Piles. I joke about it, claiming I’m Descended from Mound Builders. And I take refuge, professionally, in sharing my milieu of employment (the Missouri Botanical Garden) with certain Botanists whose offices are amazingly more chaotic than mine. Hah! Reputation saved by science! But in my Sock Drawer, order reigns. Sort of. That legend, like me, is aging. Truth be known, it’s pretty jammed up in there these days. Because I scout for cool pairs without de-acquisitioning, that drawer is way the heftiest of the six in my dresser. Blacks are crowding out the Blues. My SmartWool Striped Sox (wear like iron!) in pride of place at drawer front, are puttin’ the squeeze even on my Oranges/Reds and Green ones. I can pull out a pair to match any color and pattern combination in an outfit, for warm and cold weather, subtle or loud, for holidays or general use. And I do, and I proudly sport them in business, creative or casual settings. I y Interesting Socks! But what to do when my socks get outdat-
ed, infrequently as this occurs? Back in 2005, I coveted (and bought) the book Stupid Sock Creatures, by an artsy young guy named John Murphy. This lavishly illustrated cartoony DIY printed paradise promoted “making quirky, lovable figures from cast-off socks.” I combed through my historical pairs (and my husband’s semi-kaput socks) and rounded up sacks of Sock Monster potentials. What an opportunity! I yearned to make stupid characters. Back then, I wanted to make Sock Monsters so badly I could barely sleep. Certainly I wasn’t lacking Monster Material. I was so excited, I showed off the book at work, where my Green Building colleague Emily borrowed it and promptly created two darling recycledknit novelties for her little nephew. But my brain doesn’t work as a MonsterMaker. Despite a mental desire, I wasn’t motivated to actually whack into my collection and try my hand at whipping up toeheaded creatures. Crafty is just not how I function. My longings are at odds with my ability to imagine an outcome, and do it. So my fabulous cache of stretched-out college Knee Socks, unbelievably uncomfortable 1980s Toe Socks, too-scratchy Wool Socks and lovely holey Ankle Socks remains down in the basement of my home (and psyche), in faint hopes that a clever reuse day will dawn, for my sock stash and for me. Meanwhile, from that famous bulging drawer, exactly the right pair steps out to complement whatever I wear. Tiny sun-colored flowers, perfectly matching that new scarf? They’re in there. Faire Isle in exactly the hues of a favorite sweater? Check. Summer-weight watermelon motif? Yummy! Cat heads with rainbow eyes? Bluebirds of Happiness? Cardinals perched on pine boughs? Glittering spiderwebs? Smiley faces? Tie-dyed? Argyle? Neon green recycling symbols? Sorry, world of monsters, I have not got the gumption to embody your soles. But any attire will meet its perfect match in my Sock Drawer. Anytime. Neatly. Jean Ponzi holds forth on profound as well as mundane topics, weekly, in her KDHX Earthworms Podcasts. For nearly the past decade, we have spent Valentine’s Day showing our seeds some love. It has become a lovely tradition. Seeds sown now in the high tunnel include celery, herbs, peppers, eggplant, cabbage, onions, broccoli, Napa cabbage, lettuce, spinach, and even tomatoes. We start some things on heat mats and keep the temperature in high tunnel regulated to 50 degrees overnight. The sun significantly warms the soil and the plants during the day. Why Bees? Beekeeping Workshop Feb. 6 Explains What All The Buzz Is About
B
eekeeping is an interesting hobby with sweet rewards! The world that bees create inside their hive is largely self-sufficient, requiring monitoring more than intervention. The infrastructure and hierarchy they create is a breathtaking creation requiring not much more time and effort than a garden. Colonies will forage up to 8,000 acres, so the entire community is helping to feed your bees. Honey is delicious! Honey is the source of hundreds of years of homeopathic remedies and at the heart of thousands of delicious recipes. Honey is the ultimate prize of beekeeping. A single hive can produce up to 100 pounds of honey in a year and at $7 per pound, it keeps getting sweeter. Backyard beekeeping is great for the bees! Just
like crops, diversity is one of the keys to maintaining healthy colonies and aiding the conservation effort of the honeybee. Our food sources depend on it! Berries, apples, almonds & cucumbers are just a few of the delicious foods that are pollinated by bees. With bees dying off in large numbers, backyard beekeepers are necessary to bring back the populations and keep our plates filled with food. BEE PREPARED! Eastern Missouri Beekeepers Association 9th Annual Beekeeping Workshop Saturday, February 6th, 2016 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Maritz in Fenton, Missouri Spend an entire day learning about bees & beekeeping. There are 2 courses offered at the work-
shop, the Beginners Beekeeping Course is intended for novice beekeepers and those with no prior beekeeping experience. The instructors will cover all the basics and prepare students to start beekeeping in 2016. The Advanced Course is for experienced beekeepers and will place special emphasis on colony health and behavior. EMBA recruits nationally renowned honeybee scientists, professors, and beekeepers to train attendees on current best practices and share cutting-edge research. Your learning will not end the day of the workshop, EMBA has an entire year of hands-on workshops that get beginners out in their teaching apiary with experienced beekeepers. As club members, there are opportunities to participate in co-op purchasing of equipment and bees from reliable suppliers. You can sign up to have a mentor that will work
with you throughout your first year of beekeeping to answer questions as they arise. What is the Eastern Missouri Beekeepers Association? Founded in 1939, EMBA is the largest beekeeping club in the St. Louis area. It is composed of a 100% volunteer core of highly dedicated individuals who are passionate about promoting beekeeping and training the next generation of backyard beekeepers. EMBA hosts monthly meetings that offer networking opportunities, Q&A, and highquality presentations about topics ranging from how to do a hive inspection to how to make lip balm with your beeswax. Members range from experienced beekeepers with 30+ years of experience to “newbees” who are just figuring it out. More information and registration at: www.easternmobeekeepers.com.

Why is Meat So Cheap?
The Hidden Health Costs of Megafarms
B
y February, many of us are well into our 2016 resolutions - often to get fit and eat healthier. In efforts to curb sugar and carbs and to ramp up protein intake, we check food labels at the grocery store and opt for organic and non-GMO produce. For many of us, our food choices may also have moral ties to working conditions or environmental impacts. But even for the ethical and health-conscious consumer, it’s difficult to know where our food comes from and the ecological footprint of its production. Nowhere is this ambiguity more apparent than in meat production. Even as farmer’s markets and “Think Global, Act Local” bumper stickers are increasingly common, industrialized animal agriculture continues to explode in Missouri and throughout the US with consequences for environmental, animal, and human health. The concentration of livestock in energyintensive, confined factories is a catastrophic environmental and public health problem. Missouri is one of the top ten poultry and pork factory farming states in the country. These factories are run by absentee corporate investors attacking Missouri’s rural economy. Polluted air and water surrounding the operations not only harms our rivers, streams, and air quality,
but threaten public health and create resistant superbug viruses from the antibiotics pumped into the livestock. At MCE, we care about the environmental impacts of these corporate megafarms on Missouri’s water, land, and air. As consumers, we all care about our family and personal health. As advocates, we want to know we’re supporting the farmers who are stewards of their land and who protect our natural resources. Factory farming has no place in an ethical and sustainable food system. Consumers have the perfect opportunity to support Missouri farmers by buying meat produced by environmentally responsible, independent producers. There are numerous resources in St. Louis to find locally raised, non-factory farmed meat. Local Harvest in Tower Grove and City Greens in the Central West End supply family farmed meats from Patchwork Farms, a program of the Missouri Rural Crisis Center. Bolyards in Maplewood is another great resource supplying locally raised meat. Incorporate plant-based or sustainable alternatives to factory farmed meat as part of your New Year’s health commitments. Visit www.moenvironment.org for further information and to stay engaged with this important health and environmental issue.

Winter Is Upon Us. Take Heed!
by Dr. Doug Pernikoff, DVM
W
e are just getting a taste of winter weather, albeit with little snow, but more than enough frigid cold. What are our pet concerns this time of year? Many should be obvious, but nonetheless, we will review them for our reading audience. Cold can be threatening, but wet cold and wind are really the culprits of concern. Obviously, the best protection for your pets is to keep them inside your home, the basement, or even the garage. Yet, even these protected areas may not be enough. Provide insulating materials for floor coverings, or in some cases you might consider hanging a heat light or radiant heater. I know they are available at most hardware stores or at your local Grainger Store. For pets obligated to an outside dog house, be sure to insulate the walls, floor and ceiling. Straw floors can be useful, but need to be cleaned regularly to avoid pet exposure to collecting feces or urine. Pet clothing is a significant industry these days. I believe there is real value in considering some sort of pet apparel that not only spruces his/her looks, but keeps their core body temperature in a proper range. Remember that ears, muzzles & lips, and certainly, feet are all going to be inordinately exposed to the elements. You may need to protect those areas with coverings, or at least with regular cleaning and care as well. Ice and snow can pack up between the toes and pads of the feet, creating

damage or even frostbite. Ears are particularly vulnerable to this condition. It is basically, a freezer burn to the tissue that may result in a full tissue slough, if you are not careful. Another big concern in wintertime regards all the chemicals and other products available to your pets, especially for pets who are being housed in basements and garages. Lock up fertilizers, bug sprays and the like. Be sure the cabinets and storage boxes are secure. Whatever is safe for your kids is good policy to employ for your pets. Electric cords for heaters and such, need to be secured away from your exploring pets, as they can bite straight away and either get an electric burn, or even electrocution. And, we always discuss the concerns of anti-freeze, or ethylene glycol, which most of us use in our winter radiators. The problem is that this chemical is sweet tasting and thereby, an attractant for pets. The poisoning by anti-freeze is dose and time dependent. If you have any inclination of a poisoning or exposure, please take your pet to the vet or to an emergency facility immediately. One last note concerns cats. They are amazingly capable at protecting themselves in the height of winter and usually do just fine. Nonetheless, I encourage all cat owners to follow all the concerns and suggestions presented herein. Cats like to hide up in the car engine where they find adequate heat. I can tell you that nary a winter season goes by without cats being injured or killed when their owners unknowingly start the engine as they leave for work. Please be careful and mindful of both your cats and your dogs, and consciously implement good cautionary practices on their behalf. Enjoy the beauty and serenity of winter time. Just do it carefully!! Fondly, Dr. Doug Pernikoff Clarkson-Wilson Veterinary Clinic 636-530-1808 Clarksonwilsonvet.com
Do You Have A Coughing, Wheezing Cat?
I
By Teresa Garden, DVM
f you have a cat that is coughing or wheezing, your cat may have asthma. The preferred medical term is feline allergic bronchitis. It is a syndrome of reversible airway inflammation and narrowing. Asthma is often triggered by inhaled allergens. Sometimes the allergens can be identified. Often, they are not. Pollen allergies are suspected in cases with a history of seasonality. Mold spores can cause direct trauma to respiratory tissues. It is particularly hard to control these reactions. Tobacco smoke is also a common cause of asthma in our cats that share a home with a smoker. Asthma can also be caused by air pollution, ozone, and air-deodorizing devices. Some of these devices generate ozone which may aggravate asthma in human patients and perhaps in kitty cats as well. Other culprits involved may be out-gassing noxious chemicals from building materials and new carpeting. Common household items such as perfumes, scented candles, incense, deodorizing sprays, fabric softeners, and aromatic oils can act as triggers for asthma in some of our feline patients. Adverse reactions to food can lead to allergic bronchitis. Young and middle-age cats are most often affected by asthma. You may notice coughing, wheezing, and respiratory distress. The symptoms are episodic and can be brought on by exercise or stress. Your pet will act normal between episodes. Asthma is diagnosed based upon clinical history, physical exam, and thoracic radiographs. Transtracheal washes or bronchoalveolar lavages may be performed to confirm the diagnosis. These tests can check for underlying infectious causes of asthma. Cats suspected of having asthma should be checked for heartworm disease and should have a stool sample checked for lungworm. These two diseases can mimic the symptoms of asthma. If your cat is in extreme respiratory distress, emergency treatment is required at a critical care facility. Your cat will need oxygen therapy provided by an oxygen cage. Steroids will be given IV to decrease inflammation in the airways and bronchodilators will be given to open the airways. Most feline asthma patients will respond to long term management. We stress eliminating or reducing

exposure to inhaled irritants and potential allergens. Clay litters can be replaced with low dust clumping litter that is non-scented. We encourage no smoking in the household. Minimize exposure to aerosols, powders, perfumes, candles, incense, and fragrances. Replacing air filters frequently can help. Steroids are often needed for long term control of asthma symptoms. Prednisolone is given initially in an oral form to decrease inflammation in the lungs. When used long term this drug can have adverse effects on the body and predispose your cat to diabetes and obesity. Therefore, we often advise using Flovent which is an inhaled corticosteroid. It is much safer since it delivers the steroid directly to the lungs where it is needed. It is extremely effective in controlling the disease and does not have adverse effects. Most cats will readily adapt to having Flovent delivered thru the Aero Kat mask. Food allergens are increasingly recognized as a factor in humans with allergies. I believe this to be true for cats as well. Feeding your cat a hypoallergenic diet or limited diet may reduce antigenic stimulation and improve asthma symptoms. Holistic therapies can benefit our asthmatic felines. Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA taken daily may reduce immune-mediated inflammation in the lungs. Antioxidants may help as well. Antioxidant “defense” mechanisms appear to be compromised in human asthma patients. Antioxidant supplementation with Vitamin E, Vitamin C, and Selenium is safe and may have benefit. Human asthmatics have decreased levels of Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) which is considered to have natural antihistamine effects. Vitamin B6 supplementation in clinical trials helped reduce levels of required medication and decreased the frequency of asthmatic episodes. Quercetin, a flavenoid, has potent antioxidant properties and inhibits cells from releasing histamines. It has been shown to improve compromised breathing in asthmatic patients. Integrative therapies can work well with medications such as Flovent to manage asthma in our feline patients. Holistic therapies can improve immune health of these cats and will allow us to use a decreased dose of pharmacologic agents. A holistic approach including diet, antioxidants and fish oil will help to decrease local cellular inflammation, balance immune response, and encourage toxin elimination via the respiratory system. Asthma cannot be cured but the disease can be successfully managed. The prognosis is good for most cats. FitPAWS® “Power to the Dog, Fun Dog Fitness”
I
Ava Frick, DVM, FAIS
f you are looking to find fun ways to build a stronger bond between you and your dog, then learning the FitPAWS® way could be just the ticket! FitPAWS® is a successful conditioning program designed by veterinarians, physical therapists, and trainers that relies upon indepth communication between the Master Trainer™, the dog handler, and of course the dog. Canine total health focuses on mental stimulation, balance, flexibility, strength, and cardio fitness. Each plays a varying role throughout the many stages of the fitness program. Not only will the conditioning exercises help the physical components of dogs, they also bring about behavior modification, helping dogs live a healthier, longer life. FitPAWS has developed canine conditioning, fitness and performance tools and techniques for dogs of all abilities, life stages, and jobs. Their program model is based upon scientific research from canine and other animal species including horses, as well as quadruped robotic research. They utilize new technology and uniquely designed equipment to accelerate the training goal with novel approaches, while increasing the fun index. Some of the tools include paw pods, balancing disc, K9FITbone™, wobble board, donuts, peanuts, rocker boards, agility cones and hurdles. Each tool will be introduced at just the right time for the dog’s safe and successful progression. A goal-oriented exercise program with frequent fine-tuned assessments by a Master Trainer ensure deeper development
and improved outcomes for participating dogs and their handlers. The Canine FitPAWS model works to establish a connection between all parties, to identify body performance, and then train toward a goal. Exercise alone has been shown to decrease the risk of chronic disease in humans and dogs. Overall muscle function improves with daily exercise. If there is an injury, even with devastating issues, often these dogs will return to high quality function that defies the odds. Dogs with musculoskeletal imbalances and weaknesses tend to have higher rates of injury. A dog that has a good base of fitness developed over several years will be able to move on to tougher challenges with fewer injuries compared to a less fit dog of similar age, mental focus and body shape without a fitness base. We realize that all dogs do not start at the same point or have the same capabilities. Whether your dog is a puppy or a senior, a performance or working dog, a family pet, or one with special conditions (like obesity), our program concepts can be applied across all life stages. Keeping our dogs fit throughout their life will ultimately reduce injuries, increase self-confidence and improve our dog’s ability to enjoy a full and high functioning life. Some of the benefits of the training activities include: • Improved reaction and control • Increased trunk and core strength • Stabilization of weak areas • Improved balance and proprioception (awareness of the body's position in space)
• Increased range of motion in joints & elongation of the muscles • Improved sensory & body awareness • Preventing sports-related injuries Contact the FitPAWS® Master Trainer™ Canine Fitness Coaches at Pet Rehab & Pain Clinic today to start having private lesson fun with your dog. “Git Fit – Play Fit – Stay Fit!” 636-549-9100.

Here’s The Reason You’re Fat... by Dr. Raj Banerjee, DC
T
he reason you can’t lose weight has nothing to do with your willpower, over-eating or the Right Diet!... The Reason you are fat and unhealthy is because you have disgusting plaque and horrible little ‘CRITTERS’ living in your guts! This is harmful Plaque (below) - Everybody has it. But to keep from getting sick and to be able to maintain a healthy body weight you MUST get rid of it now! If you don't, it will eventually cause you to not be able to lose weight (regardless of how much you diet and exercise!) and eventually it will kill you! These are harmful Parasites (right) Everybody has them. If left to live and breed inside your stomach, small and large intestines and colon, they will eventually cause you to puff up, gain lots of weight, get sick more often, and take many, many years off your life! They use your body as a 'Food Storehouse' and so they can live and breed by the millions. But now it's time to flush them out and down the toilet for good. If you don't they will just make you fatter and much, much sicker! Would you trust anything living in your bowels that has teeth but NO eyes? It makes sense that if diets were really meant to work then you'd hear more and more stories of people who used them successfully.
But that's NOT what you hear at all! Instead, all you hear about are your friends complaining that they've been starving themselves to death -- yet still have trouble losing a single pound! The main reason this is so is because dangerous parasites living inside their guts (and even YOURS!) excrete chemicals (waste products) that travel to your brain and tell your "hypothalamus" to make you store more and more fat for THEM to eat! In other words, these parasites are making you a GIANT 'food factory' for THEM to eat! Imagine how easy it is to get this one parasite alone! It's in poorly cooked fish and actually lays eggs inside your bowels. (You know this is true or else why do we always say "close the lid on the toilet" to keep our pets safe from drinking parasiteladen water?) Even your bladder is not safe from harmful parasites that lay 10,000s of eggs! ... Parasites can even become "mineralized" and block your body's ability to absorb nutrition properly! ... These little critters are no joke! They are DEADLY! Not only can they hurt you while they are alive inside your guts, but they can die and then become mineralized (just like a fossil!) and cause painful swelling, blockages and other harmful things. But enough of grossing you out -- I'd rather just cut to the chase and tell you of my upcoming FREE “Take Control of Your Health Seminar”. Call our office for our next seminar date, 314-282-3990.

For more information on the BioMat call 314-725-6767
The BioMat’s quantum energetics allows the body to fight disease and heal with a naturally strong and efficient immune system. It is composed of 17 layers of technology, combining Far Infrared Rays (FIR), negative ions and amethyst crystals. Time spent on the mat relieves pain and joint stiffness, reduces stress and fatigue, boosts the immune system, burns calories and many other healthful benefits. Infrared Rays, nature’s invisible light and most
beneficial light wave, penetrate skin and increase circulation to detoxify the body of harmful toxins. The FIR can increase blood flow and clean the arteries (which means it can help lower blood pressure), release toxins, increase metabolism, heal soft tissue and relax muscles. Negative Ions are Nature’s Energizer. Ion particles cleanse and purify the air we breathe. Amethyst bolsters the production of the hormones
and strengthens the cleansing organs, the circulatory system and blood, the immune system and body metabolism. Be proactive about your health and well being. A good nights sleep on the BioMat or a mere 30 minute nap, can go a long way to ensuring a healthier, happier you. Call The Center for Mind, Body & Spirit to schedule an appointment to try the BioMat. 314.725.6767.
Our approach to holistic health includes the entire body and the oral cavity is no exception. We are dedicated to serving our patients and promoting a level of health care that carefully evaluates and reviews the use of dental materials, dental procedures and also offers dietary and nutritional support for each and every individual that is seen in our office.
Did you know that examining the mouth can reveal the presence of illnesses or unstable conditions in other areas of the body? If you feel like you’ve just about exhausted all your options in your search for better health, have your mouth examined with a different approach in mind. Get motivated, get educated, and get ready to participate in a
health-oriented lifestyle that will provide dental alternatives and a nutritional foundation designed to help support your own body’s healing powers.
The focus of holistic dentistry is to consider the mouth as a part of the whole body. We use materials and methods that are more compatible biologically with the body instead of the traditional dental materials. Examples of non-compatible materials are mercury fillings, non-precious heavy metal crowns, bridges and partials or dentures. Alternatives to fluoride are used
for the prevention of cavities. Proper alignment of the jaws and teeth are the foundation of how the body perceives itself in space. The result of improper alignment can result in symptoms of headache, ears ringing, loss of hearing, pain in the head and neck and clenching or grinding of the teeth. Good nutrition is inseparable for good
health. If your diet consists of food and drink made with white flour, sugar and no fresh fruits and vegetables, your body is likely to be acidic with resultant more medical and dental problems. For your dental evaluation contact our office for an appointment by calling 636-4589090 or email at cherryhillsdds@yahoo.com.

What to do when diet and exercise just don’t work...
Why People Store Fat in All The Wrong Places
Take a look at the pictures below and see which one most resembles you. Next, read over the different symptoms you may be experiencing. If you have been fighting the battle of trying to lose weight by going to the gym and exercising or by dieting and are still frustrated because you just can’t lose the weight or your not feeling yourself, it’s probably not your fault.
Adrenal Type ...Anxiety, frequent feelings of stress, depression, insomnia...
Liver Type ...Potbelly, bloating after eating, right shoulder pain...
Ovary Type ...Weight gain in hips, thighs and buttocks, with a lower stomach bulge...
Thyroid Type ...Weakness, fatigue, lethargy, sleepiness, need for mid-afternoon naps...
Which One Are You?
Your problem may not be what you are doing, but more of what your hormones are NOT doing. Learn how hormones can affect your sleep cycle, cravings, and fat burning. The game changer occurs when you know how to activate your fat burning hormones. Guess what happens when there is too much production of fat storing hormones? Do you think more exercise will change that? If it did, you would have lost weight by now and feel good about the way you look. There is a reason why you are unable to lose weight. You have to “listen” to what your body is trying to tell you. So, if you are embarrassed and frustrated by the way you look, or have been told by someone that you will always be fat no matter what you do, or you just can’t lose weight or feel good about yourself, we have a solution. No, it doesn’t involve working out more or eating an 800-calorie diet. This is not a quick fix where you lose weight only to gain it all back and more within 6 months. We believe in providing you with information that you can use for the rest of your life, not only to lose weight, but also keep it off. This before and after picture speaks for itself. Look at that smile! If you are looking to find the true cause of your stubborn weight gain or hormone issues, call 314-282-3990 today to register
