PUBLISHER’S CORNER Give Thanks To The Farmers Who Provide our Food
W
hen you think of November you naturally think of Thanksgiving and the bounty Mother Earth provides. I can’t help but be in awe of those people who still live off the land as farmers and growers. We work with some of these wonderful people during the year like Denise and Chris Boeckmann at Boeckmann Family Farm in Loose Creek Missouri. The Boeckmanns raise grass fed beef and poultry and are committed to providing the healthiest meat possible for their customers. Mike and Carol Brabo own and operate Vesterbrook Farm in Clarksville, Missouri and offer year-round CSA programs. Both of these families work their farms with the help of their children and pride themselves in the tradition of family farming. And then there is La Vista CSA Farm in Godfrey, Illinois, operated by Crystal and Eric Stevens. They also work the land for a living and help provide the bounty we all have come to enjoy. They offer seasonal CSA memberships. Crystal is regular contributor to The Healthy Planet and has written a new book titled Grow Create Inspire, an earth stewardship manifesto. All of these farmers work the land and get dirt under their fingernails. They are dependent on the often fickle fate of weather and growing conditions which are often beyond their control. The Spring was very, very wet. And then weeks without rain. Some tough times for farmers, but they continue on
because they love what they do. They all need more customers, CSA members and people who believe that what they do is still very important to all of us. These are not factory farms owned by big corporations. They are modern pioneers who plant seeds and hope they grow. Many of them have to take second jobs to make ends meet while keeping the family farm tradition going. I often think of them when I plant my little raised garden in the backyard and wonder how they do it. I come out every day and look at my plants and wonder why that one did not provide fruit or why that one is turning brown. Now imagine that feeling a thousand times over. I can only wonder what goes through the minds and hearts of the Boeckmanns when they tend the herd and the Brabos and Stevens when they work the fields and harvest the crops. How much love, sweat and tears goes into working the land. I work at a computer and often my eyes become tired and my brain fuzzy from all the starring at the screen on deadline. I take a minute and think of the farmers in the fields. I envy them for a moment and then realize they physically work so much harder than I do. I know, it’s all relevant. But I am just so darn proud to even know some “real farmers and ranchers.” And I want them to know how much we all appreciate their hard work so we can have healthier food on our tables this Thanksgiving and all through the year. I suggest all of you visit them online to read their stories. Sign up for their CSAs or purchase their products as a show of support. Each family has a wonderfully compelling story. I know you will find them as fascinating and heartwarming as I do. Green Ball Celebrates Sustainability November 6 By Jean Ponzi
T
he sixth annual Green Ball will roll out the green carpet in the Delmar Loop, welcoming our region’s eco-minded movers and shakers for a night of fun philanthropy. Presented by Moonrise Hotel, Green Ball 2015 will be held from 7-11 p.m., Friday, Nov. 6, in celebration of all things sustainable. Proceeds from the gala will benefit EarthWays Center, a division of the Missouri Botanical Garden that promotes sustainability through environmental education and improving the built environment. This year’s Ball especially celebrates an EarthWays milestone: 15 years working through the Garden! Green Ball Tickets are $50 ($40 for Garden members). Your tickets include a locallysourced and organic appetizer buffet and open bar with craft beer, regional wine, and artisanal cocktails, prepared by the award-winning staff of the Moonrise Eclipse Restaurant, plus tasting tables of savories and sweets from some of the region’s hottest food purveyors. The Trip Daddys “rockabilly-roots rock ‘n roll blues” will keep this party dancing, while stunning Vivant entertainers roam the crowd. Special guest Eco Elvis will serenade and roam the crowd, setting Earthling hearts a-flutter. Come dressed in your eco-fashion finest and capture your green glam in the fun custom photo booth. “Creative Green” attire is strongly encouraged. Whether it’s recycled, handmade, eco-friendly, vintage - or simply hued green designs of all kinds will be in the spotlight. To highlight the importance of making celebrations Green, this zero-waste event will print all brochures and menus on recycled paper, compost all food waste, recycle all paper and glass, and festoon with eco-friendly décor. Volunteers Make A Difference Greening The Places They Love By Johanna Schweiss, USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator
A
ll of us at the USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter believes that everyone deserves to live, work, learn, and play in green and healthy spaces. Every year we make progress towards our goal of transforming the built environment, and 2015 has been no exception, largely due to the hard work of our volunteers! Many USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter volunteers serve on standing committees, supporting our organization to provide high quality educational programming, engaging and retaining members, marketing the benefits of green building, and advocating for green building practices. They also serve the community, supporting non-profits, houses of worship, and schools to adopt environmentally friendly practices, with a goal of greening the places we love – because where we live, work, learn, and play matters! In the 2nd annual Green Schools Quest, volunteer mentors assisted 38 schools to devise and implement low or no cost sustainability projects. School and mentor teams took on a wide variety of projects: implementing recycling and composting, creating and restoring green spaces, exploring and conserving energy, encouraging alternative transportation, reducing paper use, and more. Last year, Green Schools Quest participants at public, private and charter schools in Missouri and Southern Illinois totaled nearly 4,000! And the third annual Quest is now underway with 45 school and mentor teams. Hard working volunteer mentors and Green Schools Committee made these impressive impacts possible! With the Pope’s recent encyclical on the need to care for creation and a growing understanding of the threats of climate change, faith communities of all
types are exploring opportunities to be stewards of our environment. USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter volunteers, together with volunteers from Missouri Interfaith Power and Light, have been working to support congregations to reduce their environmental footprint and reduce operating costs. At the Green Your House of Worship Workshop in February, USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter volunteers supported congregations to explore green strategies and begin developing a sustainability action plan for their houses of worship. Participants discussed opportunities for their houses of worship to better serve their congregations through water and energy efficiency, waste diversion, green purchasing, and responsible site maintenance. Often, implementing low or no cost energy efficiency strategies can create large savings in utility costs, creating opportunities for anyone working with a limited budget to invest needed funds directly into their mission! The first step towards understanding the potential for energy savings is energy benchmarking – the process of tracking energy use over time and comparing performance to similar buildings. At a recent event in October, USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter volunteers assisted building representatives from schools, congregations, and businesses of all sizes to benchmark their energy consumption using the free on-line tool ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager. 2016 marks the USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter’s 15 year anniversary, and we will be celebrating our volunteers’ many accomplishments. We are looking forward to many more years of working to ensure that everyone has access to green and healthy spaces to live, work, learn, and play. You can learn more about the USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter and our volunteers at www.usgbcmogateway.org

City of St. Louis and Operation Brightside Partner To Reach Full Recycling Potential
I
n 2011, blue recycling dumpsters and roll-out carts began appearing throughout St. Louis City streets and alleys. This resulted in an immediate increase in recycling collection, and quickly raised the City’s diversion rate (percentage of waste diverted from the landfill) from 2% to 10%. However, since the initial implementation, the diversion rate has remained stagnant. The good news is that the city has a great opportunity to grow recycling in St. Louis. Thanks to the generous support of the St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management District (SWMD) and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the City’s Refuse Division has partnered with Brightside St. Louis (aka Operation Brightside). Together, they will target and overcome the challenges in order to help St. Louis reach its full recycling potential. With SWMD grant funding, Brightside will develop and implement a Block Captain Recycling Engagement pilot project. This pilot
T
project will help increase recycling participation in St. Louis by providing residents with the knowledge, resources and motivation they need to keep valuable materials out of the landfill. The project will focus on areas with low recycling participation and will use a variety of tools and community outreach methods to spread recycling awareness and increase participation levels. Brightside’s network of volunteer block captains will assist with outreach and education and will give residents an opportunity to teach each other about recycling. To further assist residents in taking the first step toward
recycling, Brightside will also provide in-home recycling bins and educational materials to over 3,000 households in the pilot areas. Additionally, Brightside will start loaning recycling roll carts to neighborhood groups doing clean-up projects as part of the Blitz program. While cleaning up city streets and alleys, groups will be able to easily separate recyclable materials from other litter using the new carts. Through this pilot project, residents will learn about the many options available for recycling and the wide variety of items that can be recycled. Developing a better understanding of the importance and the difference they can make, they will be more likely to recycle valuable resources. Not only does recycling divert valuable resources from landfills, it keeps commodities in our region. This helps strengthen the job force of our local recycling and remanufacturing industry. Recycling is the first step to living a more sustainable lifestyle and this project will engage the community and encourage residents to act together for the betterment of their health, environment and neighborhoods. The lessons learned from this project will help Brightside develop a set of best practices that can be replicated in neighborhoods across the City to further increase recycling participation and waste diversion.
Maplewood Home To Many Green Businesses
he City of Maplewood is quite a place to discover (or rediscover) these days. Within just a short walk, you will find award-winning restaurants, unique shopping opportunities and often great events. The many fine dining establishments in particular share a distinctive honor. Many of Maplewood’s restaurants are members of St. Louis Earth Day’s Green Dining Alliance (GDA). When 25% of the businesses joined the GDA, Maplewood became the nation’s first Green Dining District (GDD). The area stood out as a natural model as a district with a high walkability score and large concentration of independent businesses in the 7200 and 7300 blocks of Manchester and the 2700 block of Sutton. In designing the program, the GDA developed member practices, such as eliminating the use Styrofoam products, participation in single stream recycling, phasing in CFLs and/or LEDs lighting, and setting additional waste reduction goals. Some of the local temptations include awardwinning chocolate, organic foods, specialty cocktails, fresh roasted coffee, a mobile solar-powered coffee cart, a variety of teas, fresh baked bread,
breakfast, and even a choice of mini pies, quiches and pot pies. Those who enjoy sports, events, live music and a vibrant atmosphere will surely find their comfort zone as well. The following restaurants are members of the GDD, including some in process: • Art House Coffee/Living Room • Bolyard’s • Foundation Grounds • Great Harvest Bakery Co. • Kakao Chocolate • Pie Oh My! • Schlafly Bottleworks
Solid Waste Management District and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to upgrade its 24-hour, 7 days a week, recycling depository center. In addition to aluminum, paper, plastic, glass, etc., the center accepts textiles. A new plastic film collection program is being developed to accommodate additional recycling options. The drop off center should accept a variety of plastic film, such as bags for dry cleaning, bread, produce and cereal. Product wrapping, such as bubble wrap and shrink wrap for electronics and furniture will also be part of the program services. The City hopes the upgrades to and education of the recycling drop-off site will increase recycling
rates in the City and the surrounding communities. University City also received a grant from the St. Louis County Department of Public Health to improve and expand its commercial recycling program throughout the City, beginning with the University City Loop. Businesses in University City have the option of using private haulers or the City trash service. The City has begun reaching out to these businesses and promoting the City’s competitive commercial rates and advantages of using the City’s service. There is justification for the businesses to change services; private haulers charge for recycling service whereas the city does not. This

University City: Leader In Commercial & Residential Recycling
well-established recycling program is one of the many longstanding and progressive services of University City. In 1974, the City of University City became one of the first municipalities in the country to offer curbside newspaper recycling to its residents. Since then, the program has expanded into a single-stream recycling program. In 2008, the City implemented one of the first curbside singlestream recycling programs in the state. Now every resident has curbside recycling service and nearly every business has access to complimentary recycling service when using University City solid waste service. Today University City continues to expand and improve its recycling program. The City obtained a grant from the St. Louis-Jefferson
means the more the business recycles, thus reducing the volume of landfill/trash waste, the less the business pays for trash service. It is a simple, clear, and economical benefit for utilizing the City’s Service. In combination with expanding commercial service in University City, an exterior public space recycling program is being developed as part of this project. Although the businesses generate much more recyclable waste than the patrons in public spaces, it is important for recycling to be included in all aspects of University City. This not only shows true commitment to recycling by the City, but also fosters a climate for recycling in an area where the City, residents and patrons are already committed to “going green.” For additional information, please email jwendt@ucitymo.org or call 314-505-8562.

ARTful Living
November is Diabetes Awareness Month by Kari Hartel, RD, LD Program Coordinator, Cooking Matters, Operation Food Search
N
ovember is Diabetes Awareness Month, and likely everyone knows someone who is affected by this unfair disease. Today there are more than 29 million Americans living with diabetes. The majority of diabetics have type 2 diabetes, with only 1.5 million having type 1 diabetes, which is an autoimmune disease. Diabetes cost the U.S. $245 billion in 2012. Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death, and many diabetics are at a higher risk of illness than ordinary people. Diabetics are at a much higher risk of contracting illness and usually take much longer to recover from illness. However, there are steps diabetics—and all people—can take to boost immunity and help avoid getting sick in the first place. November is the start of cold and flu season. Rather than stocking up on Nyquil and cough drops, get a head start on warding off illness by building your diet on immune-boosting foods. You’ve likely heard that vitamin C-rich citrus fruits, such as oranges, tangerines, clementines, grapefruit, lemons, and limes are great for keeping a cold at bay, but what about other foods? Other foods loaded with vitamin C include sweet bell peppers, leafy greens, tomatoes, kiwis, papaya, berries, chili peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, pineapple and mango. However, these are not the only foods that can help you bolster your immune system. Be sure to include foods that contain probiotics, such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi. Foods full of beta-glucans, such as oats and barley, have also been shown to help reduce your risk of catching the flu, and should you get sick,
they can help antibiotics work more efficiently and speed up wound healing. Allicin, a component found in garlic and also onions, leeks, shallots, scallions, and chives, can help rev up your immunity. Research has shown that consuming garlic each day (about 2 cloves a day) could make you two-thirds less likely to contract a cold. Plus it’s delicious! Shellfish, such as clams, oysters, crab and lobster, contain selenium, which helps your white blood cell produce cytokines, which are proteins that help your body get rid of flu viruses. Other immune-boosting foods include chicken soup, green and black tea, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, and carrots. Have you recently been diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes? Would you like to learn more about how to make better food choices to improve your health? An Operation Food Search dietitian offers guided grocery store tours at Shop ‘n Save for groups to learn how to eat healthier on a budget following guidelines for diabetes. For more infoformation or to set up a tour, please contact Christina Popp, MPH, RD, LD at Christina.Popp@OperationFoodSearch.org. (A minimum of 3 participants required per group) Join us this month for these OFS happenings: Get a jump on holiday shopping as Operation Food Search hosts its 17th annual Empty Bowls fundraiser November 20 – 21 at Plaza Frontenac, and December 5 at St. Louis Galleria selling beautiful ceramic bowls hand-crafted ceramic by local artists. The empty bowls signify hunger in our community and bring light to this important issue. Everyone loves a parade! Cheer on KMOV Channel 4 on-air anchors and Operation Food Search volunteers along the parade route of Ameren Missouri’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 26. Stay tuned to KMOV for opportunities to help nourish our neighbors in need this holiday season!

A Consideration of Color...
J
teacher who says, “There are so many colors in the rainbow and I see every one!” I’ve seen incredible sunsets that fill the sky with orange, red, gold and pink, just as the same colors can be seen sometimes at sunset. Awesome! And proof that the sky is not always blue. Mother Nature is pretty good with her paintbrush in autumn as well as leaves take on metallic hues. People will travel miles just to view the autumn leaves when the colors start to turn. Some even argue over which weekend offers the best color. They don’t travel to see the green; they travel to see the colors. Don’t we consider it a treat to view a full orange moon on a clear night? And winter snow does sometimes look more blue than white as it reflects the light.
ust the other day, as I was walking into a major retailer, I passed a woman exiting the store. She had blue lips. Not pale blue lips but bright, electric, royal blue lips. Otherwise, she was quite average and unremarkable in her makeup and dress---nothing unusual to notice, except for her very blue lips. They were quite noticeable. And that made me start to think about color and to question what we consider to be “natural color.” Lipstick comes in lots of shades: red lips and pink lips and even orange lips seem quite “normal,” don’t they? But they’re not. Lips are not naturally red. Lips are not naturally pink or hot pink. And no one’s lips are naturally orange. But those colors wouldn’t necessarily call attention, would they? Not the way blue lips do. So why is that? What makes us read some colors as “natural” but other colors as odd? When I was in high school, I worked at a local card and gift shop. The main full-timer who worked there was an older lady (probably much younger than I am now, but “older” is a relative term when you’re 17). She was very nice, but the main Painting by Ken Worley, in The Building/ Soulard Fine Arts thing I remember about her was the fact exhibition at the Gallery of Regional Arts Commission. that she always wore fuschia lipstick. Yep, fuschia. Always. No matter what color We humans simply love color! Pablo Picasso noted, clothing she wore. And yes, it was unusual back then. “Colors, like features, follow the changes of emotions.” Funny how I still remember that. Colors bring out emotions. “Artists and interior designAnd let’s not even begin to discuss the wild array ers have long understood how color can dramatically of colors for nails or hair. Frankly, I like to see interestaffect moods, feelings, and emotions,” writes psycholoing hair colors. Why not blue, or pink, or copper? gist Kendra Cherry in her studies of color’s influence Really, if people color their hair, who says it has to be on people. “It (color) is a powerful communication tool brown, black or blonde? Unusual colors seem more fun. and can be used to signal action, influence mood, and Which brings me to the point of this article: what cause physiological reactions.” is natural color? It’s indefinable, really. If “beauty is in Given the prevalence of color, one would expect the eye of the beholder,” maybe natural color is as well. color psychology to be a well-developed area," note I once saw an impressionist painting of blossoming researchers Andrew Elliot and Markus Maier of the trees in springtime and overheard another viewer’s University of Rochester. "Surprisingly, little theoretical comment that the painting wasn’t very realistic. Well, or empirical work has been conducted to date on the I’ve seen pale pink and bright pink and lavender blosinfluence of color on psychological functioning, and the soms on various trees in springtime, so those colors are work that has been done has been driven mostly by realistic. Trees are not always green. practical concerns, not scientific rigor." So, umm, the Singer/songwriter Harry Chapin did a song in the experts don’t know exactly why we like colors either… ‘70’s about a child whose artistic “voice” was limited It’s an interesting concept to ponder: why do we when a teacher told him that “Flowers are red, and interpret some colors as being natural, especially when leaves are green. There's no need to see flowers any all colors are found in nature? So, why not blue lips??? other way, Than they way they always have been seen” You can see “ArtFul Happenings” The song goes on, until the child eventually has a at TheHealthyPlanet.com

Biochemical Individuality and Functional Medicine by Dr. Amy Davis, MD
F
unctional Medicine is focused on overall health by using personalized and system-oriented medical care. We are all truly unique in our genetic makeup and in how our environmental exposures impact us. There are two different components that contribute to biochemical individuality. First, the genes inherited from your parents and ancestors determine physical strengths and weaknesses. Second, the influence of the environment on your genes can influence them to express or not, or to turn on or turn off. The internal, genetic makeup and external environmental (epigenetic) influence for each person creates a person who is truly unique. Parents contribute genes to their child’s unique genetic makeup at birth, and these genes pass from one generation to the next. All families have inherent weaknesses that predispose them to certain diseases, like heart disease or diabetes. In the instance of heart disease, a common genetic weakness has been observed in the methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase gene – referred to as MTHFR. Taking the activated form of vitamin B9 allows us to jump over the weakness and support the pathway to function properly. In other words, we support the body to do its own job. Epigenetics is the study of the influence of the environment on the expression of genes. Your observable traits result from interactions between your genes and the environment. As
a person goes through life they are exposed to many external influences in the environment. Things like chemicals pollutants, pesticides, cigarette smoke, and heavy metals can all impact the gene expression – for example, whether cancer genes are turned on. Healthy nutrients can favorably impact the genetic environment to protect from disease states. Conceptually, this approach enables us to favorably impact genes that could otherwise create disease. In the case of heart disease, it matters greatly whether or not you smoke, exercise, eat healthy and have reduced stress in your life. Just having the gene doesn’t mean you have to get the disease. The choices you make can and do contribute to the outcome! The power of understanding your biochemical individuality can be profound. Targeted support of your predisposed genetic weakness results in optimizing your biochemical functions. Individually targeted nutrients enable the body to overcome inherited weakness with better outcomes for your future health. I would like to help you! Here’s The Reason You’re Fat... by Dr. Raj Banerjee, DC
T
he reason you can’t lose weight has nothing to do with your will-power, over-eating or the Right Diet!... The Reason you are fat and unhealthy is because you have disgusting plaque and horrible little ‘CRITTERS’ living in your guts! This is harmful Plaque (below) - Everybody has it. But to keep from getting sick and to be able to maintain a healthy body weight you MUST get rid of it now! If you don't, it will eventually cause you to not be able to lose weight (regardless of how much you diet and exercise!) and eventually it will kill you! These are harmful Parasites (right) Everybody has them. If left to live and breed inside your stomach, small and large intestines and colon, they will eventually cause you to puff up, gain lots of weight, get sick more often, and take many, many years off your life! They use your body as a 'Food Storehouse' and so they can live and breed by the millions. But now it's time to flush them out and down the toilet for good. If you don't they will just make you fatter and much, much sicker! Would you trust anything living in your bowels that has teeth but NO eyes? It makes sense that if diets were really meant to work then you'd hear more and more stories of people
who used them successfully. But that's NOT what you hear at all! Instead, all you hear about are your friends complaining that they've been starving themselves to death -- yet still have trouble losing a single pound! The main reason this is so is because dangerous parasites living inside their guts (and even YOURS!) excrete chemicals (waste products) that travel to your brain and tell your "hypothalamus" to make you store more and more fat for THEM to eat! In other words, these parasites are making you a GIANT 'food factory' for THEM to eat! Imagine how easy it is to get this one parasite alone! It's in poorly cooked fish and actually lays eggs inside your bowels. (You know this is true or else why do we always say "close the lid on the toilet" to keep our pets safe from drinking parasite-laden water?) Even your bladder is not safe from harmful parasites that lay 10,000s of eggs! ... Parasites can even become "mineralized" and block your body's ability to absorb nutrition properly! ... These little critters are no joke! They are DEADLY! Not only can they hurt you while they are alive inside your guts, but they can die and then become mineralized (just like a fossil!) and cause painful swelling, blockages and other harmful things. But enough of grossing you out -- I'd rather just cut to the chase and tell you of my upcoming FREE “Take Control of Your Health Seminar”. Call our office for our next seminar date, 314-282-3990. ~ Natural Health Insights ~ We Will Help Find The Cause Of Your Pain by TJ Williams, DC, PhD
A
t The Institute of Natural Health, we see a lot of people in pain. In fact, over 100 million Americans suffer with chronic pain. With so many in pain, it seems silly to us that no one is asking the important question: “What is causing the pain?” If you are in pain, we will work with you to help find the cause of the pain, whether it is a food sensitivity, a nutritional deficiency, a genetic issue, or something else. It is important to note that pain is a symptom—a signal that something is wrong. Pain is not a condition. Taking pain medication to cover up your pain is the equivalent of placing a piece of tape over the check engine light in your vehicle so you do not have to look at it. The tape is not going to fix what is wrong with your engine, just like pain medication is not going to fix what is wrong with your body. One class of pain medication is Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatories (NSAIDS) such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), and naproxen (Aleve). While NSAIDS are some of the most commonly used pain medicines, with many available as overthe-counter medications, they do not come without their own dangerous side effects. These side effects, according to the American College of
Rheumatology, include stomach bleeding and/or ulcer, high blood pressure, fluid retention, and kidney and heart problems. Many are unable to find relief with NSAIDS and they turn to something stronger. Did you know that the United States makes up only 4.6% of the world’s population but consumes 80% of its opioid medications and 99% of the world’s hydrocodone? In August of 2015, the FDA approved the use of OxyContin, an opioid painkiller, for children as young as 11 years old. One side effect of opioid painkillers is physical dependence (addiction). Currently, an estimated 2.1 million people abuse opioid medications in the U.S. Clearly something is not working. Fortunately, there is another way. While many of our patients know the dangers of taking pain medications long-term, people with chronic pain who can barely function are left with few options. Oftentimes those in pain have little support from friends or loved ones who are unable to comprehend their situation if they have not dealt with chronic pain themselves. The choice most are given is either pain or pain medication. Luckily, there is hope. If you are suffering from chronic pain we can help. Please call us at 314-293-8123, or visit our website at www.theinstituteofnaturalhealth.com.

Professional Patient Named Bob: Operation Open Sesame By Simon Yu, MD
W
ho is Bob? Bob is a retired Wall Street lawyer from New York. He has been on a mission searching for the answer to his mysterious chronic fatigue. He quit his job. He thought he was “burned out while making good money under so much pressure from Wall Street. Poor guy! Even after he quit his job, he did not recover from his relentless chronic fatigue. On the other hand, he was financially secure. He could afford to retire and travel around the world to see famous medical doctors at their clinics. He started attending many medical conferences as a patient searching for a solution to his medical problems. About fifteen years ago, I met Bob at a European biological medical conference. He is always nice and polite. We could discuss many medical topics almost like he was a medical doctor. He also collects many of the latest medical equipment to use in his home for self-therapy. He has enough medical equipment to run a small medical clinic in his home. When I would run into him at a medical conference, I would usually invite him to come see me in St. Louis to evaluate his mysterious illness with chronic fatigue. He was too busy travelling to famous clinics in Europe, searching for a solution to his problems. In 2014, I met him again, when we both joined a medical tour group going to Baden Baden, Germany for the Medicine Week Conference. During this tour, I did give a lecture on “Parasites as a New Global Emerging Environmental Threat at the Medicine Week Conference. This conference is considered to be the largest, most prestigious alternative medical conference in Europe. My lecture mainly focused on hidden parasites and how to detect and treat them based on energy medicine. It also briefly covered dental related medical problems. Europeans, like most Americans, have chronic parasite problems but they are not getting treated properly. They think parasite problems are in Africa, India, Asia, and South America but not in Europe. The standard parasite tests are not sensitive enough to make a correct diagnosis. Therefore, many parasite problems go untreated. However, patients often complain with symptoms such as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) like ulcerative disease or Crohn’s disease or allergies, asthma, migraine headache, sciatica, back pain, anemia, chronic fatigue, or behavioral problems. I’ve written numerous articles on parasites. (See the Articles page on my web site shown below.) In 2015, almost one year after I saw him at the Medicine Week Conference, Bob finally showed up at my clinic. He said he is doing better overall compared to 15 years ago but still feels tired in the morning, feels shaky, has a sensitive stomach, and has tightness in his chest when climbing stairs. He told me he brought a blank check with him for me to evaluate him and test him with everything I have in my clinic. He also wanted to try out all the medical equipment I have while he is getting evaluated. In a situation like Bob’s, I call these patients “professional patients. They are willing to travel around the country or around the world searching for answers to whatever mysterious medical problems they have. Bob became a professional patient collecting many certificates for attendance at medical conferences but with no medical diploma. Now, the pressure was on me to evaluate him, the lawyer from New York. First visit evaluations consist of many basic screening tests, taking a medical history, a physical examination, and acupuncture meridian assessments (AMA). (Again, see my Articles page for articles on AMA.) The AMA is one of the most important parts
of my evaluation to guide me in focusing in on the most important causative problems of my patient’s current medical conditions. Often, the causative problems are not what the patient thinks they are. To my surprise, all 40 out of 40 main meridian points were perfectly balanced. This indicated nothing was wrong with Bob. In most cases on their first visit, it is not uncommon for me find at least 5 to 10 out of 40 meridians are out of balance. In some seriously ill advanced stages, I may found 30, or more, out of 40 meridians are out of balance. In addition, the voltage (as in conductance and resistance) readings are also very low at the acupuncture points. This indicates even worse problems. Occasionally, I will encounter perfectly normal meridians when they are complaining about many unexplainable medical problems. Most of the time, they are on multiple medications, especially on psychiatric medications, which mask the disturbance of the meridians or, as seen by some energy medicine practitioners, to balance the energy disturbance. But these patients still experience symptoms of headache, fatigue, asthma, low back pain or sciatica, or allergies. For the last 20 years, I have been exploring many different techniques to uncover these hidden problems. For a lack of a better description, and with my military background as a retired medical officer for the U.S. Army, I named the technique for un-cloaking the hidden medical problems “Operation Open Sesame to detect asymmetric threats. Our body is a highly organized bio-matrix energy system with unique human frequencies. Our body also responds to outside environmental stimuli for which we can measure differences in conductance, resistance, and voltage. We can use light, frequency, acupuncture, crystal, or other means to polarize the bio-field and un-mask, or un-cloak, hidden problems. When I placed one single acupuncture needle on his governing vessel in his face, within minutes I was able to detect 17 out of 40 disturbed meridians that I was not able to detect a few minutes prior to this. Numerous hidden problems revealed themselves including dental, lung, heavy metal, allergies, heart, small intestine, hormone, spleen, liver, gall bladder, and parasite problems. Bob seemed reluctant to re-do the dental work but was willing to follow the rest of my recommendations. There are plenty of professional patients like Bob. I can think of Dee, Carolyn, Mary, Big Bob, Skinny Bob, and many more. Deep down in my heart, I know if Bob does not address his dental problems, he will never graduate from his unofficial title, the Professional Patient named Bob. Operation Open Sesame to save Bob will fail without addressing all hidden asymmetric threats including dental and parasite problems. Dr. Simon Yu, M.D. is a Board Certified Internist. Return the soup to the easiest to grow edible: garden sorrel. The tangy tart lemon flavored leaves are a green that can be used in salads, sauces and soups. Most people aren’t familiar with this plant because it is not usually sold in stores or farmers market, yet it was once a common garden plant. The botanical name is rumex acetosa. It is a perennial hardy to zone 3 that thrives in my garden. The solid green leaves (not the ones with red veins) grow in an 18 to 24 inch clump somewhat similar to a hosta, although more wild looking. It Garden Sorrel Leaves prefers mostly sun. It looks good all growing season even with several cuttings close to the ground to harvest the leaves. Best of all it is ignored by rabbits, squirrels, insects and other pests. Garden sorrel can be eaten raw in salads and other dishes, or cooked in sauces and soups. It shrinks a lot when cooked. Nature Wisdom with Pat Tuholske Naturalist
A Niche in Nature
I
n the early days of Europe, common folk placed wreaths or plant bundles on the door to identify their home in the same manner that house numbers are used today. Individual homes would display flowers, trees and grasses grown in the garden or gathered in nearby woods and meadows. Honor this ancient tradition and enhance your home with the plants most connected to your essence. Go to nature and collect Evergreen Sprigs, Pinecones, Rose Hips, Sumac Berries, Acorns and Moss. Weave them into a wreath and hang near your front door to bless all who pass through. For bundles, gather a few branches, tie the stems together with a ribbon and hang in doorway, alcove or hearth for protection and purification during the long winter. Each wreath and plant bundle tells a story of a niche in nature ... a deep moment of connection with the spirit of place. Crafted from living elements of the landscape, they represent the cycle of the seasons and the web of life. Bringing nature indoors leads us to a richer life when we take the time to reflect on the wonder of the plant. Plants can be wise teachers and faithful friends, blessing the space they inhabit. Create your own unique wreaths or colorful plant bundles to honor your home. Here’s some you can create from plants available in winter gardens, roadsides or local florists: Bundle together a number of different grasses…Little Bluestem, Ryegrass, Pampas, River Oats, Bluegrass. Tie with raffia and display in a prominent place. Grasses sift away any unwanted influences and bring positive energy to body and mind. On a small base of Grapevine or Straw, glue Rose Petals, Rose Hips, Ironweed, Witch Hazel, Yarrow, Mountain Mint, Sage and Feathers as a plant-based dream catcher. Hang above your bed to bring vivid dreams or in your meditation area to focus on goals. Strengthens your ability for self-exploration and creativity. If you are fascinated by the mystical and invisible
enchanted realms, make a fairy ring to honor the hidden worlds. Make or buy a circle of Grapevine and decorate with Acorns, Pine Cones, Ferns, Moss, Lichen and Grasses. Ancient lore knows the fairy ring as a passageway into the world of the nature spirits. Bind together various tree branches with ribbon and hang in your home to receive the gifts of the trees… patience, serenity, strength and deep wisdom. Trees fully inhabit their realm, living out their destiny radiating wholeness. Collect branches with cones, colorful fall foliage, unusual seed pods or berries such as Birch, Pine, Sumac, Witch Hazel, Sycamore, Golden Rain Tree. The Cedar trees are loaded with berries this year and make beautiful bundles to grace your space. Sweet Everlasting is easy to identify and gather this time of year. Native Americans called it Rabbit Tobacco and used it for smudging. It makes a full and fragrant cream-colored wreath. Add Lichen, Cones, Nuts and dried flowers as accents. I call it Circle of Hope as these plants help understand change and cultivate transformation. A Memory Wreath can be easily started with a base of Grass, Straw, Grapevine or Sweet Everlasting. When Roses or a flower bouquet appear in your life, hang the flowers upside down before they begin to fade. When dry, glue onto your base. Also include everlastings like Yarrow, Globe Amaranth and Cones, Leaves and Nuts gathered from momentous places you have visited. The wreath becomes of living memory of your treasured encounters with beauty. I have walked the Ozark woodlands and meadows for many seasons hunting the wisdom of the wild plant. This time of year, I gather Rose Hips, Grasses, Sweet Everlasting, Pinecones, Acorns, Buckeye, Cedar Tips and other wild offerings to weave into wreaths, wheels and bundles. It is my spiritual practice connecting me to my essence bringing peace, single-mindedness and deep healing. As I continue to learn about life, nature’s ways seem more and more wise. Go to the trees, wildflowers, sky, rocks and waters as often as you can. The elements of nature help nourish and heal us. Ask The
HERB LADY Cathy Schram Q: I just found out that I am pregnant. I do take a lot of vitamins and herbs. I am worried about morning sickness and insomnia because I had those problems with my last pregnancy. What can I take that might help me? A: Congratulations! What an exciting time for you. Vitamins are a must, especially folic acid. As a rule, most herbs should be avoided during pregnancy; however, there are several herbs that have been famous throughout history for preparing mothers for childbirth. It is always a good idea to check with your health care professional before taking any herbs. Most herbalists advise against using herbs in the first trimester with the exception of gentle herbal remedies for morning sickness. Later in your pregnancy choose herbs that are packed with vitamins and minerals that complement the body during pregnancy. Listed below are a few remedies that address your particular concerns and can be used safely: Morning Sickness: A quick fix for nausea is to sniff peppermint oil. Put a few drops of peppermint essential oil onto a cotton ball or tissue and keep it with you. It also comes in convenient stick form. Sniff at first sign of queasiness. Ginger is a safe anti-nausea herb. It helps digestion and warms up the digestive tract. It is best to make a ginger tea and sip 2 to 3 cups throughout the day.
Morning Sickness & Insomnia When Pregnant Insomnia: During the second and third trimesters, chamomile tea is an excellent way to get a good night of sleep. It is also helpful to calm your nerves and ease stress. Do not drink more than 2 cups per day, because the uterine muscle could relax too much. (More is not better). Red Raspberry Leaf is the most popular pregnancy herb. It is rich in vitamins and minerals and contains a substance that helps prepare the uterus for labor and birth. It can be used in small amounts during early pregnancy to help relieve morning sickness. During the second and third trimesters, 1 or 2 cups per day is suggested. In addition to toning the uterus, it can help decrease the pain of delivery. These are just a few tips to help ease your pregnancy. To learn more, consult with your herbalist or health care professional. This herb information is for health education purposes only. It is not intended to replace the services of licensed health practitioners. Consult with a physician for any condition that requires professional care. Do you have questions about herbs or vitamins? TMS: A New Treatment For Severe Depression By Dr. Steve Harvey, MD
T
MS is a new and highlyeffective treatment for major depression. TMS, which is transcranial magnetic stimulation, treats severe depression by stimulating a targeted area of the brain with magnetic pulses. TMS was approved by the FDA in 2008, and has improved since then. Most people who suffer from major depression get relief with standard treatments such as medications and/or psychotherapy. But many others will spend months or years trying one medicine after another — and nothing seems to help. But because TMS is different, it will often work well for those who don’t get better with other treatments. TMS is a great backup plan when other treatments fail. How does TMS work? TMS delivers a rapid-fire series of MRI-strength magnetic pulses, which induces electrical eddy currents in the brain. The pulses are directed at a part of the brain called the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (also called the LDLFPC). The L-DLFPC is known to be involved in depression. Each treatment lasts 20-40 minutes, and typically a series of about 30 treatments are given over several weeks.
What are the side effects of TMS? The main side effect is scalp discomfort; the treatment feels like having a woodpecker on your head. That discomfort is temporary. In rare cases (much less than 1%), stimulation has caused people to have a seizure during treatment. Who is a candidate for TMS? TMS is mostly for people who have a more severe depression, and who have tried and failed a number of different antidepressant medications. TMS is not safe for those with non-removable metal objects in their head - such as metal aneurysm clips, or surgical plates. Metal tooth filings are no problem, however. TMS should usually not be given to anyone with a history of epilepsy, or to anyone with an active drug or alcohol problem. Does insurance cover TMS? Some insurances cover it, and some do not. Medicare coverage for TMS is expanding across the country, but has not yet reached Missouri. Where do I get more information? For more information about TMS StLouis check our website at TMS-StLouis.com. Or for more information about TMS in general, check TMSyou.com,
Because TMS is different, it will often work well for those who don’t get better with other treatments.

After processing, partial cans of usable paint are given away free to those who can use it, and full cans are sold for $6.00 a gallon. Are you aware that partial cans of similarly colored paint can be mixed together in a large bucket to make enough of one new color to do a large project? f you're like most people, the change of seasons prompts us to start anew. We feel the urge to fix things up around the house, clean up and clean out those closets, the basement and garage, and get our lives and surroundings in order. As you go about these activities, be aware of the things that can be recycled or repurposed. Landfills are nearing capacity, and new ones are very expensive to build. Not only are they expensive, but they can only be built in locations with favorable geographical and geological conditions. They need to be near the sources of trash for economy of transportation, yet nobody wants a landfill in THEIR backyard! The more we can reduce what is put into our trash stream, the better it will be for everyone! Crushed Red, Crushed Red Urban Bake & Chop Shop offers artisan-crafted salads and pizzas, as well as the option to customize salads and pizzas from a myriad of fresh ingredients. Each salad includes fresh vegetables, fruit and protein, is organically dressed and chopped-to-order with a Crushed Red mezzaluna knife. The pizzas are built on a foundation of a whole-grain crust that was developed in house. They are then stretched by hand, topped with an organic tomato sauce, baked in a proprietary oven and served piping hot in just 90 seconds. Rounding out the menu options are a rotation of daily all-natural soups and savory shareable appetizers such as the Warm Herbed Goat Cheese or Urban Zest. In addition to progressive food options, guests can also enjoy wine by the glass or bottle and locally brewed beer on draft. Planet New Solutions For ADHD by Drs. Jen and Jason Rhodes
Stories & Resources For Young People & Their Families
T
he National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) estimates that five million children in the United States have ADHD—that is about five percent of all children. While ADHD is most commonly associated with childhood, studies show that up to 70 percent of children with ADHD continue to have symptoms as adults. Often, children are prescribed stimulate medications as a way to alleviate the symptoms of ADHD as these medications help users to focus their thoughts and ignore distractions. However, there are short and long-term effects related to these drugs. The most common side effects of ADHD medications are decreased appetite, sleep problems, headaches, jitteriness, stomach aches and social withdrawal. The long-term impact of these medications on a youthful, developing brain is not yet known. With the side effects of medications, many parents are turning to a new therapy in the treatment of ADHD called Neurofeedback. More than 30 years of university-based research has demonstrated that the brains of children and adults suffering with ADHD produce a high amount of theta waves and too few beta waves, resulting in an inability to concen-
trate and pay attention. Theta waves are the predominant brainwave produced when you are just about to fall asleep; beta waves are produced when we are awake, alert and externally focused. Normal theta to beta ratios in adults is 2:1 and in children it is 2.5:1. Ratios higher than 3:1 suggest ADHD. In several different studies it was demonstrated that 86 percent of the children diagnosed with ADHD using traditional criteria had a theta/beta ratio higher than 3:1. When the brain becomes dysregulated, it sometimes produces a high level of theta waves in waking states. In these cases, it is associated with distractibility, inattention and daydreaming. In some cases, the individual will become hyperactive to compensate for the lack of focus. Neurofeedback is a non-invasive procedure to teach children with ADHD how to control their own brainwaves and reduce or eliminate the symptoms associated with ADHD.

Turkey Day is On the Way! Holiday Cautions for Your Beloved Pets! by Dr. Doug Pernikoff, DVM
N
ovember houses Turkey Day, and that means tons of great foods, lots of family love and more. Many of our pet health concerns around Thanksgiving have to do with all those scrumptious table goodies getting into the mouths of our non-descriminating pet gourmets.
Generally speaking, any introduced and thereby, unfamiliar foods can pose real problems for our dogs and cats. Dr. Doug’s

Any item unusually fatty in nature can encourage an acute onset of pancreatitis; an inflammatory condition affecting the pancreas, the organ making our enzymes for digestion in our small intestines. In the face of inflammation, the pancreas will leak these digestive enzymes, which create havoc to the tissues in surrounding them. The result may be very aggressive and persistent vomiting and diarrhea. Animals can become very ill, very quickly, and even create a true emergency condition. The best solution is good prevention of this issue and other conditions mentioned herein. Keep table foods off the floor and make sure to secure the trash bins. Turkey bones are a great favorite of our pets. However, they can splinter, or be swallowed in large enough fragments to choke your pet, or lodge somewhere along the bowel tract and create an obstruction. These conditions will run up major costs at the emergency clinic and can also prove life concerning in some conditions. And, do not forget that tasty dessert table. Chocolates are particularly dangerous, creating a toxicity for dogs due to a compound they contain called theobromine. Dark chocolates and cooking chocolate are typically most concerning, but even lighter, sweet chocolate can prove to be problematic. Chocolate toxicity in dogs can also be a potential killer for your dogs, due to this compound that is much like caffeine, directly affecting the dog’s heart. NO CHOCOLATE is the rule. Finally, I always have to alert pet owners to the issue of BLOAT!. This occurs in medium to large sized breeds most commonly. The stomach can swell with fluids from over drinking; or, by eating foodstuffs that create excessive gas accumulation. The stomach can twist on its axis, dragging the spleen right along, eventually shutting off the blood supply to those very critical organs. Dogs will either try to vomit without success, or pace uncomfortably. You may note obvious swelling of the abdomen, especially beyond the rib cage. This is a very true emergency and must be treated very quickly and very proactively. If you have a large breed dog and you see any sort of abnormal behaviors as we described above, then I strongly encourage you to contact your vet or take a visit to the emergency clinic. Better safe than sorry!!! Have a wonderful and love-filled Thanksgiving Holiday! eeping a body healthy can be a challenge whether young or old or even in between. Stressors face your pet around every corner. Environmental chemicals and toxins in the foods, carpet, drywall, grass, asphalt, and even the air, are constantly picking away at the body’s ability to do its best. Vaccines, while helpful to a degree, can further stress an already struggling immune system. Owners who are stressed further add to an animal’s stress. Yes, they can pick up on our emo-

tions and mimic what is going on in their “aura” space. This too will suppress the ability to mount good immune responses. Anything that drills the adrenals to get to work becomes a negative factor in optimal survival. Then, when the body is exposed to some potential “invader,” it is not able to get on top of the situation and illness sets in. You end up at the doctor’s office getting blood tests and medication in an effort to kill off the “invader” and hopefully bring your pet back to his former self. Unfortunately cancer also fits into this category and it is met with months to a lifetime of attention, or having to say good-bye. Let’s look at the vast immune system. The primary or central focus is at the thymus and bone marrow. Secondary or peripheral support arises in lymph nodes, spleen, blood, and lymphatic tissue found in the gut, mammary glands, and lungs. There are the T-Cells that are categorized by their job as “Helpers, Suppressors, or Effectors.” BCells mount protective immunity known as IgM, IgG, and IgE (for atopy or topical allergy reactions). There are also macrophages and Killer Cells. Killer Cells are there to attack tumor cells, microbes, and viral infections. With all of that going on how could we see so many infectious diseases? Maybe it is not going on as flawlessly as the body needs it to. Here are some reasons why. Nutritional deficiencies or imbalances as well as exposures to various chemicals, drugs and toxins present an ongoing immunological challenge, which can suppress immune function. Protein deficiency leads to premature atrophy of thymus and suppression of T-lymphocyte, Helper T-Cell function, and a decreased antibody production. In testing results tabulated for 569 dogs I have found that 94% are deficient in calcium and zinc. These minerals are well established as being crucial to immune function. Without these very important minerals, multiple enzyme reactions struggle to take place and organs, such as the liver, cease to function optimally. This does not mean there is liver destruction. It simply means it can’t do all of its jobs properly and there are not tests for everything the liver is involved in doing. Our goal then will be to reduce stress in our pet’s lives and to maximize the availability and assimilation of nutrition so that he can have an ample supply of exactly what the immune system needs when the challenge arises. Next month I will outline a plan that you can use to do exactly that! For more information please contact Dr. Ava Frick at 636-549-9100 or visit online at www.AnimalRehabStLouis.com.

Deep Tissue Laser Therapy for Pain and Inflammation
O
ne of the fastest growing treatments for pain management in the last decade has been cold laser therapy, not to be confused with surgical lasers which are used to cut and cauterize tissue. Cold lasers actual heal tissue not destroy. Cold laser therapy works by a process called photo-biostimulation. What this means is that light waves emitted by the laser stimulate the chemically damaged cells to produce beneficial enzymes, increase mitochondrial activity, increase lymphatic drainage via macrophages stimulation, and increased vasodilation. More simply put, the laser decreases inflammation and pain, while speeding up recovery and reducing scar tissue production. For these reasons, Cold Laser Therapy has been a
huge hit among chiropractors, physical therapist and athletic trainers. In fact, many professional teams have been utilizing laser therapy to return their star athletes back to the game quicker for years. So why can’t you experience the same quality of treatment! At Committed to Health Chiropractic Center, Dr. Paul Hyland and Dr. Megan Floarke are highly trained and certified in diagnosis and treatment of an assortment of conditions. Just to mention a few: arthritis, neck and back pain, sciatica, TMJ, shoulder pain from overuse and tendonitis, knee pain, tennis elbow, little league elbow, plantar fasciitis, fibromyalgia, IT band syndrome, sprains, strains and more. Our office uses a top of the line class IV laser manufactured by LiteCure. Class IV lasers are the strongest laser available for therapeutic treatments. A class IV laser puts out 1,500 times more energy than a class III, thus allowing for deeper tissue penetration, a larger treatment surface area, and faster results. Testimonials: “An automobile accident left me with numerous injuries. My shoulder, neck, back, knees, ankles, and wrist have all benefitted from Laser Therapy. It’s provided amazing pain relief, and helped shorten my recovery time. Thank you, Committed to Health, for continuing to find new methods to help your patients! - Taleah B. “I had been living with constant pain from a broken toe for nearly sixteen years. After just 3 short treatments, I was living pain-free and have been ever since! Thank you Dr. Hyland for saving me from costly cortisone shots and surgery, and giving me my life back! - Janice J. This process allows our bodies to gain the deep rest necessary to release stress and fatigue. The result can be improved health, more satisfying relationships, increased creativity, and renewed enthusiasm for life. Primordial Sound Meditation can be learned by people of any age, culture, and educational background. It is recommended for anyone who wishes to enjoy greater peace, freedom and fulfillment. the BioMat’s quantum energetics allows the body to fight disease and heal with a naturally strong and efficient immune system. It is composed of 17 layers of technology, combining Far Infrared Rays (FIR), negative ions and amethyst crystals. Time spent on the mat relieves pain and joint stiffness, reduces stress and fatigue, boosts the immune system, burns calories and many other healthful benefits. Infrared Rays, nature’s invisible light and most
beneficial light wave, penetrate skin and increase circulation to detoxify the body of harmful toxins. The FIR can increase blood flow and clean the arteries (which means it can help lower blood pressure), release toxins, increase metabolism, heal soft tissue and relax muscles. Negative Ions are Nature’s Energizer. Ion particles cleanse and purify the air we breathe. Amethyst bolsters the production of the hormones
and strengthens the cleansing organs, the circulatory system and blood, the immune system and body metabolism. Be proactive about your health and well being. A good nights sleep on the BioMat or a mere 30 minute nap, can go a long way to ensuring a healthier, happier you. Our approach to holistic health includes the entire body and the oral cavity is no exception. We are dedicated to serving our patients and promoting a level of health care that carefully evaluates and reviews the use of dental materials, dental procedures and also offers dietary and nutritional support for each and every individual that is seen in our office.
Did you know that examining the mouth can reveal the presence of illnesses or unstable conditions in other areas of the body? If you feel like you’ve just about exhausted all your options in your search for better health, have your mouth examined with a different approach in mind. Get motivated, get educated, and get ready to participate in a
health-oriented lifestyle that will provide dental alternatives and a nutritional foundation designed to help support your own body’s healing powers.
The focus of holistic dentistry is to consider the mouth as a part of the whole body. We use materials and methods that are more compatible biologically with the body instead of the traditional dental materials. Examples of non-compatible materials are mercury fillings, non-precious heavy metal crowns, bridges and partials or dentures. Alternatives to fluoride are used
for the prevention of cavities. Proper alignment of the jaws and teeth are the foundation of how the body perceives itself in space. The result of improper alignment can result in symptoms of headache, ears ringing, loss of hearing, pain in the head and neck and clenching or grinding of the teeth. Good nutrition is inseparable for good
health. If your diet consists of food and drink made with white flour, sugar and no fresh fruits and vegetables, your body is likely to be acidic with resultant more medical and dental problems. For your dental evaluation contact our office for an appointment by calling 636-4589090 or email at cherryhillsdds@yahoo.com.

What to do when diet and exercise just don’t work...
Why People Store Fat in All The Wrong Places
Take a look at the pictures below and see which one most resembles you. Next, read over the different symptoms you may be experiencing. If you have been fighting the battle of trying to lose weight by going to the gym and exercising or by dieting and are still frustrated because you just can’t lose the weight or your not feeling yourself, it’s probably not your fault.
Adrenal Type
...Anxiety, frequent feelings of stress, depression, insomnia...
Liver Type
...Potbelly, bloating after eating, right shoulder pain...
Ovary Type
...Weight gain in hips, thighs and buttocks, with a lower stomach bulge...
Thyroid Type
...Weakness, fatigue, lethargy, sleepiness, need for mid-afternoon naps...
Which One Are You?
Your problem may not be what you are doing, but more of what your hormones are NOT doing. Learn how hormones can affect your sleep cycle, cravings, and fat burning. The game changer occurs when you know how to activate your fat burning hormones. Guess what happens when there is too much production of fat storing hormones? Do you think more exercise will change that? If it did, you would have lost weight by now and feel good about the way you look. There is a reason why you are unable to lose weight. You have to “listen” to what your body is trying to tell you. So, if you are embarrassed and frustrated by the way you look, or have been told by someone that you will always be fat no matter what you do, or you just can’t lose weight or feel good about yourself, we have a solution. No, it doesn’t involve working out more or eating an 800-calorie diet. This is not a quick fix where you lose weight only to gain it all back and more within 6 months. We believe in providing you with information that you can use for the rest of your life, not only to lose weight, but also keep it off. This before and after picture speaks for itself. Look at that smile! If you are looking to find the true cause of your stubborn weight gain or hormone issues, call 314-282-3990 today to register
