PUBLISHER’S CORNER Shopping and Supporting LocaL buSineSSeS are part of who we are
T
here is a lot of talk about “Shopping Local” and “Supporting Local” businesses these days. And for good reason. I understand the allure of the big box stores, with their “Super Big Discounts”. They are all about “cheaper” and “convenience” it seems. But is that really who we are? The truth is, our communities were built on the backs of local business. Growing up in Webster Groves in the 50s and 60s, we actually had a drugstore with a soda fountain, a five and dime store and a barber named Charlie. We had a doctor who made house calls and shops you didn’t get lost in. Many of those are gone now, but other small shops have taken their place. Sure the types of small businesses may have changed, but they are still St. Louis familyowned by your friends and neighbors. These are the people who count on your support after they take out loans to open new stores and hope a good holiday season will get them out of the hole. Their business taxes help keep our communities strong and safe. And you know what, you can get some great “discounts” and dare I say it, “personal service” at the shop or store
down the street. Hey, no one is saying you are a bad person because you shop at the big chain stores. I am just asking you to take a look at your local shops, too. Take a stroll down Main Street and see who has something new to offer. I guarantee you will be pleased at what you see and who you talk to -- people just like you, trying to live the dream. The thing is, you have a choice. And I hope you choose to support your local, St. Louis family-owned merchant this holiday season and all through the year. They are pretty great folks! Check out our Natural Living Gift and Holiday Guide for some great ideas. And see the story on “Go Local St. Louis” on page 9. We are running a Readership Survey in this issue and in upcoming months in an effort to identify who you are and what you want from The Healthy Planet. As a thank you for filling out the Readership Survey and mailing it to us, you will be entered into a drawing for a family outing at Trout Lodge YMCA of the Ozarks. This is a $600 value. Go to page 19 to fill out the Readership Survey and drop it in the mail. Thank you in advance for your feedback and support. We look forward to bringing you the best Healthy Planet magazine ever in 2016! Everyone at The Healthy Planet magazine wishes all our readers and your families, a very merry Christmas and happy holidays. May you find time to celebrate and rejoice with family and friends and share a prayer for peace in the world! in good Health,

“Heart of Peace”
30th World Peace Day, December 31st By Jeannie Breeze
A
s we prepare for the 30th annual World Peace Day, “Heart of Peace”, Thursday, December 31, 2015, 6 a.m. at Central Reform Congregation, 5020 Waterman (at Kingshighway) in St. Louis’ Central West End, the intenJeannie: tion, as always, is to create a joyous, I holy celebration of love and community, where our differences fade away and we recognize our unity, our common desire for a peaceful world, and a healed planet. We know that peace begins with us and radiates out to envelop our community, our nation, our world. Every aspect of our morning gathering is designed to help bring us to that point of common vision that we may truly be of one accord. This Universal Faith Service is FREE and OPEN to ALL. A love donation is invited. Luminarias light the way to the entrance to Central Reform Congregation. Doors open at 5 a.m. so you can put your message on a prayer flag with Jeane Vogel’s “Dare to Touch the Face of God” project, buy raffle tickets for the 5 fabulous prizes to be awarded at the potluck breakfast following the service, or enter the sanctuary for silent meditation. Parking is available in the CRC parking lot, the church lot across the street, or along the street. Best to arrive early to insure close parking. Music, meditation, and message invite your participation in the journey. The bells of JOIA, the flute and chant of Raven Wolf C. Felton Jennings, the gongs and bowls of healing sound artist Patti Pellerito awaken congregants with the Call to Peace. Music by stellar local artists Brian Clarke, Bridgette Kossor, and Tim Mead opens our hearts “to the luminous love light of the One.” We share The Universal Greeting, respond to the warm welcome of Rabbi
Randy Fleisher, and find ourselves enlightened and enthralled by the Earth Wisdom of “Green” Jean Ponzi, and by the soul renderings of fellow traveler J’Asa, reading from her journal “The Book of Now”. Together we travel into the holy space of the heart, with event organizer Jeannie Breeze as our guide, as Patti Pellerito transports us with her sacred sounds. Together we emerge from our journey, renewed and revitalized, ready to bless ourselves and each other, to find compassion in our hearts for all life, ready to bless the Earth who sustains us. We must remain firm in our resolution to be agents of change and spiritual evolution, even as we remain centered in the power of love as the greatest force in the Universe. We celebrate our peace, our love, our joy with affirmation, chant, and jubilantly express our joy through dance & movement as JOIA inspires our final outpouring of radiant beingness. Our fellowship continues and grows as we share potluck breakfast (no pork or shellfish, please), and draw the winning raffle tickets. We need volunteers on Wednesday, Dec. 30 to come to Central Reform Congregation (5020 Waterman at Kingshighway) between 1-4 pm to help decorate the sanctuary and the foyer, to prepare and place the luminarias, and to begin breakfast preparations. Early on the morning of the event, we need light bearers to come light the luminarias, greeters to welcome and direct guests, angels to help with breakfast. Please e-mail me at jjbreeze46@gmail.com with your names & telephone numbers to volunteer. You are also invited to support the event financially at https://www.gofundme.com/wpday or with the purchase of a program listing. Visit www.wpdaystl.com for full details. Peace & Love to All, Jeannie Breeze (event organizer).

UCBC is known for both our modern, American craft beers and reverential, European beer styles. Look for your UCBC Winter Warmer variety pack to give as a gift, or just enjoy and share over the holidays. Sustainability wise, UCBC works to reduce our carbon footprint by recycling all qualifying materials, composting all biodegradable waste, and donating all of our spent grain to local farmers. Our brewing equipment allows us to reuse water that is normally lost in the brewing process, which also conserves energy. Finally, both UCBC locations feature solar power arrays, large windows to provide natural lighting, and LED lighting to reduce our energy needs. We are proud to say all of these efforts allowed our Grove Brewery & Bierhall to be awarded Missouri’s first and only LEED Certified Brewery! www.urbanchestnut.com.

Urges You to Shift Your Shopping! by Terry Winkelmann, Co-founder, Go Local St. Louis
G
o Local St. Louis, the new independent business alliance, urges you to shift your shopping this holiday season and think local first! The group, which formed in September and already has nearly 100 members, promotes the idea of keeping your income circulating in your community by shifting your shopping to locally owned stores. By keeping your money where your house is—patronizing businesses that are owned by St. Louisans rather than out-of-town investors—more of your purchase dollars stay in the community. And that’s important. As shoppers, Americans collectively spend a large portion of our annual shopping budget between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31. When that shopping is done at locally owned, independent businesses, we generate 2 to 3 times as much economic activity in our towns and neighborhoods than if we had spent the same amount at a national chain. Besides, when it comes to holiday shopping, a morning spent wandering boutiques in a place like Old Webster or Maplewood followed by lunch at a locally owned café is way more fun and festive than navigating the parking lot at the outlet mall. And there’s no need to stop at shopping--hire a locally owned service company to cater your party. Have a microbrew with dinner at a locally owned, independent restaurant rather than one that sends
its profits to investors in another state or country. Studies show that locally-owned independent retailers return three times or more money into their communities than chain competitors while locally-owned independent restaurants return twice as much per dollar of revenue to the local economy than chain restaurants. And buying remotely, via the internet or mail-order catalogs, creates almost no local benefit--just a few minutes work for a delivery person. Increasingly these days, local retailers strive to stock more locally made products among their diverse offerings, chosen with their region, their market and their customers in mind—not the generic U.S. market. The work of St. Louis photographers, potters, jewelry makers, seamstresses, knitters, weavers, and other artists can be found in local boutiques long after the craft show ends. Artisanal foods, like honey from local bees, chocolates individually handcrafted by someone you run into at the neighborhood grocery, pastries baked nearby or a selection of indie teas and coffees are guaranteed to bring a smile to your recipient. In this season of doing good and sharing, take a minute to consider the impact of your spending. You earned it. You’re going to spend it. Keeping it local will extend the value of your gifts to your church, school and neighbor. For more information please visit our website www.golocalstl.org.

It’s Not What You Give, It’s How You Give...
P
urchasing gifts during the holidays introduces all kinds of dilemmas for the environmentally-conscious: is the item local, fair trade, organic? There are a few initiatives like “Giving Tuesday”and “Buy Nothing Day” which challenge the traditional holiday shopping habits of Black Friday and Cyber Monday by encouraging us to divert our dollars to nonprofits and even to abandon our spending altogether. These kinds of answers to the beckoning of consumerism can get us thinking that maybe part of the problem is not exclusively what we give but how we give. One of the best things you can give someone you care about is probably the thing you’re running most short on: time. This holiday season, consider taking the time you would devote to seeking out the perfect gift for a friend and instead putting that time towards an activity you can do together. Share your skills Spend some time fixing a leaky sink, helping build a raised bed, or knitting a pair of gloves for a friend or family member. But take it a step farther and teach your friends and family a skill. Skill-sharing builds long-lasting knowledge and gives you invaluable time with the people you care about, creating something that means much more and lasts much longer than that cute ceramic tchotchke. If you love good food, share a meal made with local ingredients. If you already partici-
pate in a CSA or make weekly trips to the farmers market, take your friends and family along. Introduce them to your favorite farmers and vendors and then share the experience of making your favorite recipes and enjoying a meal together. Share your passion Take friends and family to a community film screening, an evening of community storytelling or spoken word, or a panel discussion. Often these events are free or have a suggested donation that will support a local nonprofit or group. Share your support Give a friend a gift membership to one of your favorite local nonprofits. Memberships support the work of nonprofits, such as Missouri Coalition for the Environment, on a monthly or annual basis and are critical to the daily operations of many organizations. They can also offer a sense of community, providing opportunities to meet new people and engage with important issues. If you’re not able to support financially, always consider volunteering. Ffresh R E S H fare FARE HealtHy Holiday Habits by Kari Hartel, RD, LD Program Coordinator, Cooking Matters, Operation Food Search
T
he holidays carry lots of joy and merriment. Time spent with loved ones often brings with it indulgent, celebratory, rich foods. While these tasty treats are time-honored traditions, they can pack quite the calorie punch. In order to enjoy classic holiday foods with your friends and family without packing on the pounds, employ a few of these simple tricks to stay on track. Always have a small, healthy snack before heading to a family gathering or holiday party. Enjoy a piece of fruit or some sliced veggies before the main event so you are not famished when the food arrives. This will help you exert more control over your food choices. Drink plenty of water. Yes, there will be plenty of festive holiday beverages around—punch, cider, wine, etc.—but these calories will add up quickly because your body does not get the same feeling of fullness from liquids as it does from solid foods. Enjoy one glass of wine or other holiday beverage and then switch to water. If you choose to try some appetizers, choose only the most delicious-looking ones and place them on one small plate and really relish each bite. Speaking of appetizers, avoid standing right near the appetizer and snack area—standing so close makes it easier for you to munch mindlessly and you won’t realize how much you have actually eaten. When it comes time for the main meal, be sure
to fill half of your plate with colorful vegetables first—you will have less room for the higher-calorie fare. To ensure you will have healthy options available, offer to bring a dish to the gathering and make something nutritious that you can fill up on. When it comes to dessert, cut a small portion of whatever tasty treat looks the best to you. Savor each small bite slowly and have it with a full glass of water. Focus on visiting with your loved ones rather than the food itself. Be sure to stick to your workout routine throughout the holidays. Even if you can simply fit in a quick morning workout or go for a walk after the main meal, any sort of movement is better than none. In response to a dramatic increase in the number of children needing hunger relief, a generous, anonymous donor has issued a $50,000 matching gift challenge to Operation Food Search (OFS) to support its weekend feeding program for foodinsecure children, Operation Backpack. Through the end of December, every dollar given toward the backpack program will be matched until $100,000 is reached! Since Operation Backpack began in 2008, OFS has distributed over a half million free backpacks filled with food for the weekend so that children from low-income families can return to school Monday mornings refreshed and with focus for learning rather than the gnawing pangs of hunger. Please help us reach our matching gift challenge to help more children by making a donation online today at www.OperationFoodSearch.org, or by calling (314) 726-5355 X 19. Thank you!

Healing Autism Begins In The Gut by Dr. Amy Davis, MD
T
his past month a new U.S. government survey found that 1 in 45 children aged 3 and older have been diagnosed with Autism. Now at more than 2% of the total youth population, the future for these children, their families and their communities will be challenging. We need to focus on solutions now. Healing Autism begins in the gut. The microbiome – or your intestinal “flora” - comprises healthy and unhealthy bacteria, yeasts, viruses, protozoans and parasites. The gut is so important that it is now referred to as the second brain and the microbiome has been described as the undiscovered organ. The microbiome, or “flora”, is just as vital to your health as your heart, lungs, liver and brain, and your gut supports all these vital organs. Healing the gut directly impacts overall health. Children with Autism routinely have digestive problems, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), and increased intestinal permeability which leads to food allergies and intolerances. These dysfunctions may lead to poor growth, developmental delays, diarrhea, constipation, behavioral problems, inattention, poor sleep, hyperactivity, compulsions and more. What are the roles of a healthy gut? • Aids digestion and absorption of nutrients • Creates a protective barrier against potential invaders - the first line of immune defense • Detoxifies by neutralizing and removing toxins in food • Profoundly impacts the immune response and can prevent negative autoimmune reactions • Produces important enzymes and chemi-
cals for the brain including vitamins and neurotransmitters like serotonin (the feel good neurotransmitter) • Helps to handle stress • Assists in getting restful sleep • Helps to control inflammation What can be done? • Improve digestion with enzymes, bile salts, bitter herbs • Improve pH and support with vitamins like B’s , D and K which may low because of inadequate healthy bacterial production • Prebiotics and Probiotics to support the flora • Treat the unhealthy flora with antimicrobials - natural or prescription • Nutrients to reduce inflammation, oxidative stress and heal a permeable gut • Removal of inflammatory foods and food allergens Healing the gut is absolutely essential for treatment of all children on the Autism Spectrum and most children with developmental delays. Healing the gut lays a solid foundation for significant improvements to begin and provides a stable basis from which to begin detoxification and support the body’s natural healing process. Because everyone has individualized needs, careful evaluation and management is necessary for the best results. We would like to help! ~ Natural Health Insights ~ Is Depression A Brain or Gut Issue? by TJ Williams, DC, PhD
A
ntidepressants are the #2 selling class of medication behind statin (cholesterol lowering) medications. Approximately 25 million people over the age of 12 are taking antidepressants. To put this into perspective, about 26 million people have been diagnosed with heart disease and 21 million have diabetes. Antidepressants are based on the theory of chemical imbalance, specifically neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, or GABA. Basically, this theory says that if you are depressed or have anxiety, then you must have a chemical imbalance. The antidepressants are prescribed to alter chemical function in the brain. But what if I told you that neurotransmitters work throughout the entire body and not just in the brain? What if I told you that neurotransmitters were involved in things like digestion, bone health, organ repair, immune function, sleep, and muscle tone just to name a few. While digging into mechanisms and side effects of antidepressants years ago, I found out that in 1930 John Stokes and Donald Pillsbury, both dermatologists, were the first to suggest a gastrointestinal mechanism for the overlap between depression, anxiety and skin conditions such as acne. Even today, a simple WebMD search of “irritable bowel syndrome and depression” will reveal that 50 – 90% of people who seek treatment for irritable bowel syndrome also have some psychiatric disorder
that may include panic disorder, anxiety, or major depression. This is a powerful statistic, yet it is seemingly ignored. This may not be true of all clinics, but as of the writing of this article, not one client of our clinic has ever reported that their intestinal health was ever even considered before being prescribed an antidepressant medication. This seems strange considering the above statistic from WebMD. We do things differently in our clinic for our clients complaining of depression/anxiety. Often the first thing we address for these individuals is gut health. And when we address gut health in our clients we do so systematically. We test for bacterial imbalances and we test for food sensitivities. Next, we remove foods that create problems for them, and finally we help them heal and seal their gut. Our clients subsequently report improvements not only in their sense of well-being and mood, but also improvements in sleep, decreases in sicknesses like colds and sinus infections, and increased energy. Basically, I am suggesting that by improving gut health you may be able to improve neurotransmitter function which will improve many of the things that neurotransmitters are involved in such as mood, digestion, immune function and sleep. Who wouldn’t want improvements in those areas? If you would like to take control of your health call us at 314-293-8123. You can also visit our website at www.theinstituteofnaturalhealth.com.

489 and Counting: Unintended Consequences of Nasty 17 By Simon Yu, MD
M
illions of people are suffering from unexplainable, unexpected symptoms. They are often given a “medical sentencing of life threatening conditions that defy conventional thinking. This happens in spite of their living a “clean life including a positive attitude, exercise, eating organic foods, and enjoying a supportive family life. Here are the stories of two case studies: Colon and Breast cancer. Susan, a red haired, 62 year old woman with colon cancer came to see me. She told me she passed 489 parasites as of October 20, 2015. I had known her for five years. She was diagnosed with invasive adenocarcinoma of colon cancer 18 months ago and refused chemotherapy. She had been on natural parasite medications even before her diagnosis. And, since her diagnosis, I had put her on many multiple rounds of parasite medications. She had been counting parasites after her bowel movements. She took pictures and always liked to show me her latest parasites as if those parasites are her unwanted children or aliens coming out of the toilet. Her cell phone is full of snapshots of many parasites. After a while, I got tired of looking at her parasite pictures. They all looked about the same to me: round, graywhitish, and 3-4 inches long, with the longest one about 8 inches. She showed the pictures to her oncologist and sent samples to a pathology lab. The lab report states they are unidentified substances, but not parasites. With a great disappointment, she keeps counting the number of parasites. Is there a connection with parasites and development of cancer? I’ve written many articles on this subject. She seemed obsessed with Doctor Hulda Clark and Dr. Clark’s theory of cancer caused by parasites. Her colon cancer seems stable with a steady course of parasite medications and Hulda Clark’s parasite formulations which she has been taking on her own. She also had heavy metal, lead and mercury exposures, and dental problems including root canals that have been corrected. I told her to stop counting parasites and focus on being positive and overcoming the fear of parasites and cancer. How did she get all those parasites, if that number is true? The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), November 2015 issue reported a case of H. nana, the dwarf tapeworm. It discussed a malignant transformation of the H. nana tapeworm in a human host. This patient was also positive for HIV and the proliferative cells had overt features of a malignant process of a non-human origin in the lymph nodes and lung, as shown by biopsy. This case posed a diagnostic conundrum of a parasite and cancer connection. This NEJM case study will soon be forgotten or ignored by the march for a genetic theory of cancer development. However, there is too much evidence to ignore Dr. Hulda Clark’s hypothesis. Jessie, a 33 year old woman from Nashville, Tennessee with two young children came to see me with chief complaints of severe chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, migraine headache, Hashimotto’s thyroid problem, a diagnosis of Lyme’s, and intestinal problems. She had been on multiple rounds of antibiotics without significant improvement. One of her main problems was a hidden dental infection at the site of tooth number seventeen, an old wisdom tooth socket area of the lower left jaw. Because I detect tooth
infections at number seventeen so often, I call it, the “nasty seventeen. Dental infections often mimic Lyme’s disease including frequent relapses once antibiotic treatment for Lyme’s is stopped. If these old wisdom tooth socket infections are not correctly cleaned out, the infection can back fire with an exacerbation of arthritic pain or by triggering delayed heart attacks or strokes. Most dentists, physicians, and patients do not suspect or see the connection between dental problems and the rest of the body. I refer patients to oral surgeons to clean out the nasty seventeen wisdom tooth area. This patient went to a local dentist in Nashville to clean out number seventeen tooth. This was done instead of my recommendation of an oral surgeon in St. Louis who understands my philosophy of medicine and I believe to be more aware of treating these conditions. Ten days later the patient noticed a swelling on the left side of her breast. Eventually, a breast biopsy was done which showed an aggressive, intraductal breast tumor. Her oncologist recommended to her to have a double mastectomy and chemo therapy. Is there a connection between the dental operation and the acute inflammation of the breast and eventual diagnosis of breast cancer? Or, is this a pure coincidence? Is there a common basis for developing cancer? Hidden dental problems and parasite infections are too often overlooked within the traditional medical community, and even in the natural, holistic medical communities. Not addressing these causative factors may be the reasons why their therapies are not responding. There is unintended consequence from a chain reaction that occurs when parasites are untreated. These consequences may occur quickly or over long periods of time while an individual unknowingly suffers from these conditions. Medical communities are willing to treat the symptoms with suppressive medications to get some relief, such as IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). IBS will progress to IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disorder) as Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn’s disease and may eventually degenerate into a benign tumor and finally colon cancer. Or, a combination of parasite infection and dental infection may lead to arthritis, kidney failure, stroke, heart disease, auto-immune disease, cancer, or other mysterious illnesses, without medical professionals seeing the connections. 489 parasites and nasty 17: these are the stories of two individuals with colon or breast cancer. I attempt to tie together what seems like unrelated problems: parasites and dental infections. The unintended consequences of chain reactions start with encounters of early exposure to parasites and misadventures in the dental chair. Dr. Simon Yu, M.D. is a Board Certified Internist. Meet & Greet The Native Pollinators:
GREAT GARDEN BOOKS by Linda Wiggen Kraft
T
here are two outstanding books that introduce us to native pollinators and show how we can invite them into our gardens. Native pollinators are as important as non-native honeybees in keeping plants and animals, including us, alive. There are over 4,000 species of native bees in the United States. Many of them are more efficient pollinators than honeybees. Some will only pollinate one kind of plant. Many live underground. Some live in hollowed stems and holes in trees. We depend on these native bees, butterflies and other insects and probably don’t know much about who they are, where they live and what they do. The Xerxes Society’s book titled Attracting Native Pollinators, Protecting North America’s Bees and Butterflies and author Heather Holm’s Pollinators of Native Plants – Attract, Observe and Identify Pollinators and Beneficial Insect with Native Plants are rich in detail and color photos in their 371 and 301 pages. These books explain who, what, when and where of native pollinators and the cycle of dependence plants and pollinators have with each other. There are also the striking facts of how one of every three bites of food humans consume depends on pollinators. The books also show how to increase pollinator populations in our own gardens and larger landscapes. It’s hard to put down either book. They explain what pollination is and how plants have evolved in very specialized ways to attract insects and other pollinators.
Some plants, like tomatoes, require buzz pollination of bumblebees only. Some plants like sunflowers have flat flower heads that allow short tongued bees access to pollen and nectar. Other flowers have long tube like petals that work for long tongued bees. The strength of Attracting Native Pollinators is the thoroughness of ways to create pollinator habitat in urban and rural landscapes throughout the United States. In both urban and rural landscapes it is important to provide bare land that will be underground nesting sites of ground dwelling bees. Areas for different kinds of nesting sites are also needed as part of pollinator habitat. In all gardens it is important to provide a wide variety of flowering plants that bloom from early spring to late fall. It is best not to use any pesticides, even organic ones, in a pollinator garden. The Pollinators of Native Plants book combines photos and information about specific plants and pollinators that visit that plant. For example Ohio Spiderwort, tradescantia ohiensis, is shown along with photos of six different types of bees that collect pollen. Native plants that grow in prairie, woodland edge and wetland edge conditions are featured along with their pollinator companions. These books are great inspiration and reference for all gardeners. They help us get to know the pollinators we want to meet and help us greet them with welcoming gardens designed just for them. Visit Linda at www.wwwCreativityForTheSoul.com or call 314-504-4266.

Keeping Your Perspective While Parenting A Teenager By Vera Gabliani, Ph.D.
I
get regular calls from concerned parents who are overwhelmed with their teenagers, so I decided to share some practical information about teen development to facilitate your awareness and empower you to work more effectively with your children. Let’s start with a brief overview of this pivotal time. I believe that having a deeper understanding of normal development will help you to have a big picture point of view that in turn will assist you to keep your cool when you find yourself in a challenging situation. It is important to realize, that during adolescence there is a significant as well as ongoing reorganization of many of the interconnections between the brain, the body and the developing mind and personality. Interestingly, at the same time that the brain’s emotional and survival centers are primed in their reactivity, the pathways for planning/organization/higher level thinking and self-control are undergoing remodeling. Similarly, the drives to connect with peers as well as to seek new and interesting experiences are heightened. This is why we often see teenagers preoccupied with belonging, engaging in potentially risky behaviors, operating off of stronger emotional reactions and struggling to make sound decisions. Now add in the typical stressors
of inadequate sleep, juggling school and activities, mix in shaky friendships and it is no wonder that you get overwhelmed and cranky teens. So, what can you do as a parent? First off, be proactive by learning all you can about this time period and think ahead about the common issues you may encounter. Focus on maintaining a stable and supportive connection with your teenager and on enhancing good will. Work on developing respectful ways of dialoging about the shifts going on in their world. Be willing to bear the brunt of the responsibility for staying calm and non-reactive in the face of difficult interactions. Take your time, reflect, cool off and then repair any hurt feelings or miscommunications. It is good to be clear on your preferences and boundaries and to be realistic and flexible in your expectations. Demonstrate trust in your teen by collaborating with them about win/win solutions for challenges in the above. Punishment as a teacher is overrated. It is far more useful to remember that you are building self-awareness, which takes time, experiences, conversations, reflection and encouragement. Accessing supportive and knowledgeable adults for problem solving is highly beneficial for both parents and teenagers. Dr. Vera Gabliani has over 20 years experience assisting parents and their children. She is honored to personally speak with you about your concerns and can be reached at (314) 966-0880.

Herbs & Vitamins For Eye Health
Q: I am a senior citizen and I take very good care of myself, however, I am worried about my eye health. A lot of my friends have macular degeneration. What can I do to help prevent this from happening to me? A: Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in seniors. This disorder causes a progressive visual loss to the portion of the retina (the macula) which is responsible for fine vision. It may appear suddenly or progress slowly. It is believed that macular degeneration is caused from free radical damage similar to the type of damage that causes cataracts. Other factors include aging, high blood pressure, environmental toxins and sometimes heredity. Fortunately, there are many nutrients in the form of herbs and vitamins that can help prevent, slow down or halt macular degeneration. Powerful antioxidants such as CoQ10 and grape seed extract can certainly protect against macular degeneration. Perhaps the most important herbals for the eyes are bilberry and eyebright. Bilberry contains anthocyanidins, very potent antioxidants. They strengthen the small capillaries in the eyes, which, in turn, provide better circulation to the eyes. Bilberry has also been shown to improve night vision and decrease light sensitivity. Eyebright helps relieve sore, inflamed eyes. It provides astrin-
gent effects, tightening the mucus membranes of the eye. Lutein is a carotenoid found in abundance in the macula tissues of the eye. Research has shown that when large amounts of lutein condense in the eye, the macula is protected. Daily supplementation helps prevent macular degeneration. Lutein is also found in dark green, leafy vegetables. Beta carotene and zeaxanthin will also help protect the eyes from free radical damage. Try to increase your consumption of the green, leafy vegetables and the flavonoid-rich berries such as blueberries, blackberries and cherries. Foods rich in vitamin C and E are also very helpful. I am glad you are asking about prevention. That is the key. Don't wait until you experience loss of vision to try these nutrients. Protect your eyes now, while they are still healthy. ALeRt: Christmas trees Can Prove Injurious to Your Pet’s Well Being by Dr. Doug Pernikoff, DVM
W
ho would ever have thought that those beautiful, warm Christmas symbols, the Christmas Tree, or Chanukah Bush, can be such a concern for our beloved family pets?!?!? Let me explain why!! The potential concerns arise in relation to behaviors that are innate to our family critters. Whether they are puppies, kittens, dogs or adult cats, critters explore their world. That may translate into sniffing and inhaling materials; licking and chewing; or, downright eating and swallowing! One frequent issue regards pets chewing on an electric cord that lights up the tree. The obvious result is not a good one. Electric burns to the lips and tongue to more complete electrocution and possibly death. It happens every year. Just ask any emergency veterinary hospital and you will undoubtedly hear recounting of such issues. The best idea is to cover the cord as it traverses from the wall plug to the tree base, and do your best to keep the Christmas lighting from dangling too close to access for our inquisitive little ones. The nature to explore and chew on linear items, swallowing and eventually obstructing oneself, is a common holiday scenario for kittens and cats, especially. Twine or ribbon encircling Christmas presents that drape the base of the tree, or reflective tinsel gently swaying in motion from the tree branches, are natural items of interest for cats. Again, they tend to grab and begin to milk the linear item into their mouths and eventually swallow them into their stomachs. Over time, the string item is propelled by intestinal contraction, downwards through the gastrointestinal tract. The

bulk of the string mass stays bunched in the stomach and as the linear extension of the entity attempts to be carried down the line, the gut wall starts to bunch along the item and begins to tighten and cut through the bowel wall. The results are either obstruction of the bowel lining and/or laceration of the bowel with infection of the abdominal cavity, a serious and life threatening condition called peritonitis ensues. To expect folks to remove these items completely from the holiday experience, is not logical. The option must be to exercise caution and surveillance to be sure your pets' exposure or opportunity to chew and swallow, is minimized. How about those chocolate treats we love to adorn the branches of our Christmas tree. Remember that chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine, a derivative of caffeine, that is particularly toxic to dogs. Symptoms usually begin with intestinal upset like vomiting and diarrhea. More exaggerated presentations may include lethargy, or yes, even death, usually secondary to cardiac or heart toxicity. Both the types, and amounts of chocolate ingested will influence the degree of disease presented. Cooking chocolates tend to be more concerning than other sweet chocolates, but all products should be kept out of your dogs. One other concern surrounding the Christmas tree adornments are the ingestion of ornaments. Glass items can crush and cut the soft tissues along the oral cavity. Other textures may be swallowed and obstruct the bowel, obligating you as pet owner to visit the veterinary emergency clinic and spend a ton on behalf of emergency surgery to save your pet. The bottom line and the lesson to be learned is that an ounce of prevention is certainly worth a pound of cure!!! So, be happy and stay healthy. Enjoy the Christmas and New Year holidays. Protect your pets by simply applying good common sense principles on their behalf. ast month focused on the immune system, challenges it faces along the road of life and how stress plays a role in reducing the functions of this system. Nutritional deficiencies or imbalances as well as exposures to various chemicals, drugs and toxins present an ongoing immunological challenge, which can suppress immune function. Now I will lay out some ways you can help support the immune system so it can be strong and respond quickly when the need arises. It can be broken down into four stages. Stage 1 is about the overall diet. It is important that adequate energy requirement, good protein (this means real meat and eggs), vitamins, trace minerals and macrominerals are available every day. Unlike humans, dogs and cats burn fats first and carbohydrates second for their energy source. The ability to access nutrients will be easiest for them when they dine on less processed diets. Using raw or dehydrated formulas, balanced home cooked recipes, or canned rations is preferred over dry kibble. Here is the start to drive signaling mechanisms in the immune system and to enhance your pets overall immune responsiveness. Stage 2 looks for ways to optimize other available macro- and micronutrients that are important to certain aspects of the immune system. L-Glutamine is an example. It is a substrate needed for cell division and energy production, especially of the intestinal and immune cells. These include the T-cells, B-cells, natural killer cells, macrophages and fibroblasts that were discussed last month. L-Glutamine also helps to regulate electrolyte levels and the acid/base balance of the body. It is used in the liver to detoxify ammonia and then transports ammonia to kidneys for elimination. Protein is another component which must be available for optimal immune function. Sources of good protein are muscle meat, lentils, eggs, and whey. Prebiotics can also be beneficial. They are fermented in the colon by microorganisms. Prebiotics are uniquely able to fuel the growth of beneficial microflora, which naturally help boost the body’s defense. Stage 3 is doing things to actively charge-up the immune system. We can induce the T-helper cell to protection against microbial infection. Probiotics help to destroy bad cells by supporting good bacterial fighting cells. Reducing the body’s level of inflammation will permit the immune system to focus on other immediate demands. Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids are a great way to help in this. These are the DHA and EPA available in fish oils. Stage 4 looks at each life as a unique individual. Interactions among diet, environment, and genetics ultimately define health status and can be critical in influencing chronic diseases. While there are some facets we may not be able to change this generation, what we put into and onto a body can make a difference in this lifetime. Therapeutic nutritional intervention is the greatest avenue you have to make positive improvement in the health of your pet. To recap the 4 stages:

Quality diet and fill the gaps with a good vitamin, mineral, amino acid supplement. L-Glutamine, prebiotics, and whole food protein Probiotics and fish oils Special nutritional needs for the specific conditions of your pet. Examples could be glucosamine for joints, chlorophyll for healing ulcers or arthritic joints, kelp for calcium, magnesium and iodine, or added zinc for inflammation, skin, liver, and immune needs. Stress, inflammation, and age-related changes in the immune system are suggested as some of the main contributing factors that influence life expectancy, morbidity and mortality in all species. The pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory functions of the immune cells are off balance due to constant environmental assaults. Overuse of antibiotics and rising environmental toxicity, poor nutrition and increasingly stressful, on-the-go lifestyles play significant roles in diminishing the immune system’s effectiveness. The list of possible stressors for pets is very long. They range from parasites and pregnancy to being one for a cat of too many cats in the house or a dog who gets very little attention. Those in shelters are stressed. Owners who have irregular schedules or are gone a lot can upset a dog that is waiting at home for their special persons return. And what you enjoy doing may not be your dogs “cup of tea.” Agility or flyball, going to parks, being a good citizen dog, making hospital or school visits, may all be fun for you. But not every dog is as thrilled with spending their time that way. Observe your pet for signs of stress. Emotional outbursts, tearing up things, changes in their house habits, increased shedding, chewing or over-grooming, and excessive drinking could all be signs of stress. Reducing stress in life, stopping to smell the roses, and maximizing nutritional support can all go a long way to allowing the immune system to be ready, willing, and able to respond to infection or disease when the call comes in. how to tell if Your Cat is in Pain By Teresa Garden, DVM
W
e all know what pain feels like. We know it negatively impacts our quality of life. Pain is defined as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. Pain is considered the “4th vital sign” in people. People can easily communicate verbally and nonverbally to let us know they are in pain. Dogs, too, are fairly demonstrative in showing pain through physical symptoms, facial expression, and changes in behavior. Most dog owners are very perceptive to changes that may reflect pain in their canine companion. But cats are an enigma. Did you know 70% of cat owners are unsure what pain looks like in their cat? Even veterinarians have difficulty assessing pain in our feline patients. Pain is under recognized in cats. Their indicators are subtle and easily missed by their owners and their doctors. Cats are naturally stealth, silent, and stoic. They show pain differently than people or dogs. Cats may hide their pain as a natural protective behavior. There is an art to understanding the subtle changes in a painful cat. It is important to observe their facial expression, posture and overall behavior in order to pick up the “clues of pain”. The eyes may be the window to the soul, but they can also reflect pain. Squinting is often a sign of generalized pain. So is staring with dilated pupils. A normal cat will hold its head up. A painful cat will hold the head down or below the body. The back may be hunched up. Severe pain may be indicated by a cat lying flat out on its side rather than curled into a ball. Licking the lips may indicate nausea arising from pain. Cats may be restless from pain and have trouble lying down and sleeping normally. A change in attitude can indicate pain. A sweet friendly social cat may become anxious, irritable, aggressive, dull or quiet. A cat that is normally independent may become clingy. A lack of grooming or lack of food or water intake may be from pain. Reaction to touching a painful body part includes tensing, withdrawing, vocalizing, or trying to bite. There are various conditions associated with pain. Abscesses arise from cat bite wounds. They present as painful soft tissue swellings draining purulent discharge. Bladder infections can cause painful urination resulting in straining to urinate, frequent urination,
bloody urine, or urinating outside the litter box. Constipation can be a common painful malady in older cats. Signs are straining to defecate and passing small, hard, marble-like stools. Instead of defecating daily, the cat may only have a bowel movement every 2-3 days. The cat may associate pain with the litter box and, therefore, may defecate outside the box. Diseases of the mouth and oral cavity can be painful. Signs of mouth pain are decrease in food intake, taking longer to eat, avoiding dry food, throwing food to one side of the mouth, excess salivation, bloody saliva, foul mouth odor, and rubbing at the mouth. Conditions that can result in mouth pain are loose teeth, oral tumors or ulcers, resorptive lesions on teeth, or infected teeth. As cats age, they commonly are afflicted with arthritis in their spine, hips, stifles, and elbows. Cats may not be able to jump up as high as they did when younger. They may not be able to jump at all. Their backs may be hunched and you may notice they walk slower, run slower, and climb stairs slower. These symptoms can reflect pain….not just “getting old”. Our geriatric feline friends can have trouble just getting into and out of a litter box with high sides. Pain that is not promptly managed can lead to a variety of other problems: anxiety, lethargy, aggression, inappetence, weight loss, delayed wound healing, increased risk of infection, urine and fecal retention, and self-mutilation. Once the source of pain has been identified it can be treated. Acute pain may resolve as soon as the underlying cause is properly treated. Chronic pain, on the other hand, requires a multi-modal approach to improve the quality of life of the cat. The goal of pain control is to restore normal daily activities and normal behavior. Fortunately, veterinary medicine is making progress in identifying and treating pain in cats. Drugs such as opioids and NSAIDS may be employed to relieve pain. Other treatment modalities that can be effective and part of a pain control program include therapeutic laser, acupuncture, nutracueticals, and environmental enrichment. Earthworms’ Castings with Jean Ponzi
Prospering in Pod-space I have had to become a Pod Person It seems to be part of my fate To stay one with the trees As they dance with the breeze, And be for Nature an advocate. With my purpose deliberately rooted And my focus a positive choice I am honored to be for the plant world A hearty hand, motion, and voice. My totem, the flexible earthworm, Who makes moving a mountain look easy Inspires me to speak, In my role as Green Geek, For the Earth, with persistence uncease-y. I’ve been doing this as a broadcaster For a century’s quarter, plus But when media shifts There can be sudden rifts Between on-airs and off-airs of us. And when so many modern humans Go about with buds in their ears, For they want to select What they hear or neglect That’s a climate change, my dears. This is time to make use of the new stuff Heed the call to refresh work’s appeal, (Though I felt so assured In a niche so well cured) Keep it useful AND easy AND real!
Nature shows how to roll with mutations, Demos how to evolve or go bust. Embrace a new form! Grow toward a new norm! And leave any gripes in the dust. So this is what’s happened with Earthworms My talk show community service: It served antenna-hung folks And now reaches young folks And others whom pods don’t make nervous. You can hear the same good conversations On topics so variously Green But now you choose the day And the time and the way You tune into enviro-talk Jean. If you value this source of perspective, If the show has felt true and not rune-ish Please support this Earth-voice, Make a modern-day choice And catch podcasts in spaces iTune-ish. thanks for listening – and for everything green you do! onward, into a new communicative epoch! In June of this year, the long-running radio talk show Earthworms moved from broadcast on FM-88 KDHX to podcasting in the new web niche KDHXtra.org, in support of this burgeoning new community media focus. the BioMat’s quantum energetics allows the body to fight disease and heal with a naturally strong and efficient immune system. It is composed of 17 layers of technology, combining Far Infrared Rays (FIR), negative ions and amethyst crystals. Time spent on the mat relieves pain and joint stiffness, reduces stress and fatigue, boosts the immune system, burns calories and many other healthful benefits. Infrared Rays, nature’s invisible light and most
beneficial light wave, penetrate skin and increase circulation to detoxify the body of harmful toxins. The FIR can increase blood flow and clean the arteries (which means it can help lower blood pressure), release toxins, increase metabolism, heal soft tissue and relax muscles. Negative Ions are Nature’s Energizer. Ion particles cleanse and purify the air we breathe. Amethyst bolsters the production of the hormones
and strengthens the cleansing organs, the circulatory system and blood, the immune system and body metabolism. Be proactive about your health and well being. A good nights sleep on the BioMat or a mere 30 minute nap, can go a long way to ensuring a healthier, happier you. Call The Center for Mind, Body & Spirit to schedule an appointment to try the BioMat. 314.725.6767.
Our approach to holistic health includes the entire body and the oral cavity is no exception. We are dedicated to serving our patients and promoting a level of health care that carefully evaluates and reviews the use of dental materials, dental procedures and also offers dietary and nutritional support for each and every individual that is seen in our office.
Did you know that examining the mouth can reveal the presence of illnesses or unstable conditions in other areas of the body? If you feel like you’ve just about exhausted all your options in your search for better health, have your mouth examined with a different approach in mind. Get motivated, get educated, and get ready to participate in a
health-oriented lifestyle that will provide dental alternatives and a nutritional foundation designed to help support your own body’s healing powers.
The focus of holistic dentistry is to consider the mouth as a part of the whole body. We use materials and methods that are more compatible biologically with the body instead of the traditional dental materials. Examples of non-compatible materials are mercury fillings, non-precious heavy metal crowns, bridges and partials or dentures. Alternatives to fluoride are used
for the prevention of cavities. Proper alignment of the jaws and teeth are the foundation of how the body perceives itself in space. The result of improper alignment can result in symptoms of headache, ears ringing, loss of hearing, pain in the head and neck and clenching or grinding of the teeth. Good nutrition is inseparable for good
health. If your diet consists of food and drink made with white flour, sugar and no fresh fruits and vegetables, your body is likely to be acidic with resultant more medical and dental problems. For your dental evaluation contact our office for an appointment by calling 636-4589090 or email at cherryhillsdds@yahoo.com.
