Summer Is My Season
M
y grandson Jackson turned one on July 23. The summer Cicada serenaded his special day with a buzzing rendition of “Happy Birthday.” My little Leo celebrated a chicken and mac and cheese dinner at the Llyweln’s Pub as we raised a glass of brew in his honor. The big shebang will be this weekend when 50 partygoers will enjoy Jackson’s birthday bash at the “green certified” Park Forest Apartments enjoying homemade birthday cake and dollar roll sandwiches from Freddies Market. I am trying to get him a playdate with Prince Georgie but the royals have not returned my emails. I am sure Jackson can teach Georgie a thing or two about the St. Louis two-step and clapping “yay” to just about anything. And when it comes to a drooling contest, Jackson is cutting some serious teeth so Georgie better be wearing his royal slicker. Maybe Georgie can teach Jackson a thing or two about proper mealtime etiquette. Jackson has begun the game of dropping everything from his high chair. Momma says no, but Jackson just looks at her and laughs. Momma forgets that she played the same game 22 years ago. Jackson, the Leo, loves center stage and I suspect he will follow in the dramatic footsteps of his mom and dad who have both appeared on stage. So happy birthday Jackson James Petty, this has been some first year. We look forward to what the 2nd year has in store. Love, Grampy!

Summer so far has been a roller coaster of temperatures, mostly on the kinder, gentler side. The plants have gone crazy and the blooms are bursting. Many of our purple coneflowers have been nibbled by busy bunnies and the squelching squirrels have been helping themselves to my tomatoes. We may not have deer in Webster Groves, but we have rabbits and squirrels in abundance. Makes me wonder what the neighborhood hawks and owls have been having for meals. I suggest some rabbit stew and squirrel surprise. There is nothing worse than the scorn of the suburban gardener when God’s little 1/8 acre gets robbed by furry bandits. I have my eye on you Peter and you too, Sandy. I think it was sometime during that long cold winter that I swore I would never complain about the st. Louis Summer. That’s why I now remind all of you about the prolonged agony we all shared. Summer is all about sharing the warmth, not denying it. So long as you stay hydrated, summer has nothing to be afraid of. Even the sunlight is good for you in moderation. Vitamin D from the sun helps the body absorb calcium for strong bones while emerging research finds Vitamin D helps ward off the risk of autoimune disease, cardiovascular disease, chronic inflammation, certain cancers and diabetes. Many experts feel the fear of skin cancer is keeping people indoors and out of the sun. And many doctors say that more people die from lack of sun than from too much sun. It doesn’t take much sun exposure to gain the benefits. Check it out online. There are many great sites that talk about the health benefits of sunshine. Or check with your doctor if you have any questions. Don’t stay in the dark when it comes to getting your Vitamin D. A little knowledge and common sense goes a long way. Just a note: Our Fall Natural Living Expo is coming up September 28. For more information check out article on page 19 and Expo ad n page 13. I Am A Leo, too!

mentors
T
his summer I celebrate a milestone birthday, a good time to acknowledge some major gifts of influence in my life. The gratitude lineup starts with my Gramma, who I lived with, off and on, until I was four. In those formative years. She was an inadvertent master of reverse psych, telling gregarious little me: “Don’t talk to strangers and don’t be the Life of the Party.” Thank you, Gramma. Right! My first adult mentor took me in when I mewed on the doorstep of Channel Nine, KETC in St. Louis. I came to be an intern, to work for experience rather than pay, convinced I would beef up Television Talent. Y. Sue Thorpe saw in me – a total space-case Barbie Doll – exciting raw material. She was the first feminist I knew, in the fertile early 70s. Sue prodded me to think for myself, to “Ask Better Questions,” skills I had honed by the time, a decade later, I wandered into radio –a spiffier and kinder venue than TV. Jeannie Breeze, who continues to shape St. Louis cosmic dimensions, was next to mentor me, under her rainbow wing. I worked and played with Jeannie through my 20s, learning how our thoughts shape the “realities” we perceive – and how, as a deliberately positive thinker, to see a thing from multiple sides and make my reality moves generally beneficial. The Missouri Botanical Garden – my employer for many recent, productive and amazing years – was first my Personal Sanctuary. Waltzing and chanting around Garden grounds long before our professional affiliation, I fell in love with Plants. In the company of Garden denizens I recognized some of my deepest relations, within the families of Flowers and Trees. I learned to hear their messages, to understand their Eco-Logical ways. I am blessed to now be a Plant World Spokesperson. My great spiritual teacher - not accidentally a woman – showed me how humans have a Spiritual Duty To Be Happy, as our focus in this world. She encouraged me to dance, with clear intentions, along life’s Beauty Road.
5 Dave Taylor, a station manager of KDHX, was my Magic of Radio Mentor. He heard and saw in me a Talk Show Host and gave me my longest running job, my weekly environmental program “Earthworms” – along with many other fine on-air times. Since 1995 and ‘96, respectively, I’ve worked with my EarthWays Center colleagues, Deb Frank and Glenda Abney, who are all at once my friends, my bosses, and points with me of a Flying Wedge, formidable forces aligned for Earth. Glenda demonstrates how no one is expendable yet everyone’s values are important to hear, and Deb instills an ethic to give others, always, The Benefit of the Doubt. My best friend Sarah Linquist knew my heart. Her artistry in friendship moved me at profoundest junctures. For example, as Best Woman in my wedding, she perceptively steered me through a tough and very personal choice. “Jean,” she said, “I know you don’t like it, but if you wear white this one time, you’ll stand out in all the pictures.” Sarah and her husband Robert Fishbone, also my beloved friend, intervened when I was waffling on the verge of blowing off True Love. They also helped my future husband learn how to get along with super-independent me: “Sometimes, Dale, just leave her alone.” Reflecting for this writing on the myriad ways Dale has partnered, supported, admonished and inspired, I have to say what springs to mind is this man, my Best Of Everything, delivering the mentoring message: “PARTICIPATE!” A big personality may need a big nudge. Last but in no instance least are ways my parents wisely pruned and tended their only daughter, their first-born, me. Mom said, “If you pick your nose, you’ll never be Miss America.” Her foresight enabled this Beauty-Sweetie Wannabe to avoid an unspeakably wrong fate. And Dad, known for countless pithy phrases, would say, “Stand still long enough and you’re a leader.” Neither he nor I had an inkling of the Green Jean Earth Advocate I would grow to be, but here in the 21st Century, through the changes over the 25 years I’ve been hawking Green so far, my father was right. Thank you all, and bless you, dear mentors and friends! With thanks in advance for the coming years! Join Jean Ponzi Mondays 7-8 pm on FM-88 KDHX broadcasts “Earthworms” and Sundays 9-10 a.m. when “Growing Green St. Louis” airs on the Big 550 KTRS-AM.

Guide To Resale Shops In The St. Louis Area
T
here is nothing more exciting than a bargain! And this love of a “great find” has spawned an enormous growth in resale shops throughout the greater St. Louis area. From clothes, to furniture, to collectibles to any sort of knick knacks you can imagine, thousands of bargain-hunting consumers are out in droves frequenting resale shops, used furniture stores, antique malls and consignment shops. While the main focus may be finding something wonderful for less, the end result is one of environmental significance. Resale shops have created a wonderful pipeline between unwanted items and those people who still want and can use them. Before the growth in resale shops, many of these items made their way to the landfills. There is nothing better than reusing and repurposing because it creates enjoyment for all concerned. People sell their older items, people get those items at a bargain, new jobs are created at resale shops, and the environment becomes less burdened. The old adage is certainly true: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” We hope you enjoy using this guide and finding whatever it is you are looking for at the best bargain possible! A Picture of Your Soul

ast month, we talked a bit about “wounding” that a child receives when they are small and trying to make sense of their world. By no means an exhaustive list of all the ways that wounding occurs, what happens as a result of this wounding, is that a child pretty quickly learns to put that part of their self away for “safe-keeping” and learns to be other directed for their guidance about how they should be as opposed to who they really are. They learn to smile when they are angry, laugh it off or pretend that things don’t really bother them, if this honest display of emotion could “get them into trouble” in some way. This does incredible damage as any time we put away a part of our soul, or our true self, we are effectively burying another part of our self. What occurs in this wake is a “black hole” which over time grows bigger and bigger inside, and many people spend a lifetime working to fill this hole with whatever they can get their hands on: success, drugs, food, shopping, alcohol, children, religion, cigarettes, exercise: whatever they can find to “numb out” this awareness of the hole inside, a person will expend incredible effort attempting to attain that substance. What also happens when we put away parts of our true self, our soul, is that we no longer have access to that wisdom that is inherent in our soul self. We effectively put it behind a wall, or our defense system as profiled by the Enneagram personality tool, and grow up determined to never show that part of our self again and receive the resulting pain or embarrassment or shame. These early experiences of rejection or criti-

cism are so painful, they emotionally imprint upon the child for a lifetime, and a child pretty quickly learns that in order to survive in the world, they must keep this defense or false sense of self up most of the time. They shrink or encapsulate their true self in order to survive. What the child becomes good at is living out of self-preservation mode or their Enneagram defense, and they grow and develop into adults, all the time relying on their coping skills to survive. All the energy that originally was present for life now gets allocated towards keeping the defense up and functioning at all times. This protective strategy never truly stops until we reach a point in our lives where we take the necessary steps to acknowledge and deal with all the issues that we know, on a deep level, demand our attention if we are ever truly going to become the person we were designed to be early on in life. Choosing to take these hard, but necessary steps to heal our whole self, has the ability to transform all areas of your life and relationships, including the generations to come. from page 10 time. It’s bottle beer choices number in the hundreds. Its five other locations (Central West End, Soulard, St. Charles, O’Fallon and Wildwood) all offer similar selections. “Craft beer is so diverse, it can be paired with anything. There really are no restrictions any more,” says Behnen. “Because we make a concerted effort to use locally grown and raised produce and meats, our local craft beers are a natural.” Jen Whitney, general manager of Llywelyn’s Webster Groves site, says she’s especially impressed with the collaborative spirit of people involved in craft beer. “The breweries, the brew pubs are not trying to take the other guy out,” she says. “They’re not telling their customers, don’t drink that other beer. I wish we could have that in other industries.” Across town, around the corner and 120 miles away from Llywelyn’s sit the four locations of International Tap House, iTap to those in the know. A beer emporium of sorts, its Soulard bar boasts nearly 500 bottled beers from 25 countries. More than 40 taps deliver draft beers, many of them local. None of the sites has a kitchen, so it’s a BYOF kind of place that encourages patrons to stop at their favorite eatery before their iTap visit. Or, you can order a pizza or sandwich from nearby restaurants and have it delivered. Launched in 2009 by friends Sean Conroy and Brad Lobdell, the first iTap opened in Chesterfield. Sites in Soulard and the Central West End soon followed. Last year they opened a Columbia, Mo. bar, a stone’s throw from Mizzou and a seemingly never-ending flow of beer drinkers. Sarah Scherer has been at iTap for three years, first as a server, then bartender and assistant general manager. She’s now taken on the enviable job of marketing an already successful idea. “Once we added that fourth site I kept coming up with more marketing and event ideas until it was decided we needed a marketing person,” Sarah Scherer, marketing director says Scherer. She calls them for the International her “four babies.” The summer bottle beer Tap House. menu at the International Tap House in St. Louis’ Soulard neighborhood boasts nearly 500 beers from 25 countries. More than 40 taps deliver draft beers, many of them from nearby breweries. And as the number of choices increase for the consumer, the job of educating the public is up to the people who sell it. Do you order a bottle of Afligem Tripel from Belgium, the Charleville Hoptimistic from Missouri or the Rogue Double Dead Guy from Oregon? You’ll have to try a draft beer – Schlafly Pale Ale, Urban Chestnut’s Schnickelfritz from St. Louis or Delirium Tremens from Belgium, which at 9 percent alcohol by volume, is appropriately named. Don’t worry. The staff at both iTap and Llywelyn’s are experts, some of them nationally certified. “Many people in the beer industry study for Cicerone Certification, a three-level education program for beer professionals that’s the equivalent of the wine industry’s sommelier,” says Scherer, who has attained the first level designation of Certified Beer Server. “It’s all done to elevate the beer experience for the consumer.” Whether you’re a beer aficionado, novice or somewhere in between, you can learn a lot more and enjoy some of St. Louis’ finest beers during 2014 St. Louis Craft Beer Week. Breweries, distributors, restaurants, bars, retail outlets and beer fans all come together to celebrate craft beer. Talk to brewers, pair food and beers and meet other craft beer enthusiasts. Events run from July 26 through Aug. 3 at various spots in the region. For details, visit http://www.stlbeerweek.com. Maureen Zegel is a regular contributor to The Healthy Planet magazine.

Plant a Garden for Fall by Crystal Stevens
A
ugust just might be the hottest month of the year in the Midwest. Don’t let that deter you from planting a fall garden. There is still time to have fresh homegrown produce for fall. Most fall crops are started from seed in May, June and July. In August, if you haven’t already started seeds for fall, it is best to buy established plant starts. Most nurseries around town sell plant starts for fall gardening. The following plant starts can be planted now for a late fall harvest: Tomatoes, peppers, scallions, squash, cucumber, broccoli, cabbage, kale, chard, lettuce, spinach, and pumpkins. The following greens do well when planted now from seed for fall: spinach, kale, chard and lettuce. The following root crops can be planted now for a late fall harvest: carrots, beets and turnips. Radishes can be planted now as well and are typically ready to harvest in 30 days. What to plant for next year: Garlic can be planted in late October of this year to be ready for early July Harvest. Carrots and spinach can also be planted in October for an early spring harvest next year. Perennial herbs can be planted now. The following annual herbs can still be planted to enjoy in late summer/early fall: parsley (actually a biennial), cilantro, basil and dill. Because of the hot weather in August, be sure to
either use drip irrigation, or water regularly. Pallets make excellent garden beds. Straw bales work well to mulch vegetable crops. Sheet mulching, or lasagna gardening is an excellent way to keep your garden bed weed free. Sheet mulching is essentially layering compost, leaf mulch, grass clippings, newspaper, more compost, and straw or mulch around each of your garden plants to help suppress weeds, add nutrients and retain moisture. Compost is a gardener’s best friend! A simple compost bin can be made using reclaimed materials such as pallets or an old wire fence panel. Crystal Stevens is a regular contributor to The Healthy Planet and a farmer with her husband Eric and children at La Vista CSA Farm in Godfrey, Illinois.

The Power of Purple Coneflower
pinecones and many plants have spirals that always total one of the Fibonacci numbers…5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55 etc. In sacred geometry these spirals are a living manifestation of nature’s pattern of growth seen from the smallest cells to the movement of the galaxies. These nature shapes are a blueprint of creation and a mandala that lets us experience the meditative beauty of life. These spirals of ever increasing size are arranged by nature to allow the maximum number of seeds in a seed head and for leaf growth to get the most sunshine on the leaves. For birds that love the seeds, like the gold finches that seem to appear out of nowhere when Echinacea seeds ripen, this is a good thing. But Purple coneflower’s power goes way beyond
Story & Photo by Linda Wiggen Kraft
P
urple coneflower is one of the best known and best-loved native prairie plants. Its daisy-like composite shape with its large spiky orange and brown seed heads and pink/purple flower petals is well loved by gardeners living in prairie lands and way beyond those borders. It is also well loved by insects and birds for its nectar and seeds. Echinacea purpurea is the botanical name of Purple Coneflower. The name “echinos” comes from Greek and means hedgehog, referring to the spines of the cone shaped seed head. Purpurea means purple, which is the color of the original purple coneflower. There are now orange, white, pink, yellow and other colors and shapes that show the range of hybridizers’ talents with new garden offerings. It is the original purple coneflower that has for the longest time graced our gardens, native wilderness and medicine chests. The powers of Echinacea plant, and all the species of Echinacea, start with their beauty but go way beyond with their healing powers.
The composite shaped seed heads carry the intersecting spiral pattern that is a symbol of the Fibonacci numbers. Purple coneflower, sunflowers,

August, 2014 history. Traditionally its medicine worked for fevers, sore throats and toothaches. Externally it was used for insect bites, snakebites, burns and skin problems. It has also been added to the water that is poured on the rocks in sweat lodges. European settlers continued using Echinacea for medicinal purposes and today Echinacea is perhaps the most popular herb used to treat many ailments. It comes in many forms including infusions, tinctures, ointments and capsules. Many of the scientific studies of Echinacea’s healing powers have been done in Europe. In Germany the government regulates herbs and has approved Echinacea purpurea to treat, colds, upper respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and wounds that heal slowly. Energetic healing also takes place with flower essences of Echinacea, which helps with making life transitions and moving on from stress. All parts of Echinacea have medicinal powers. The flowers, leaves, and stems of Echinacea purpurea are approved by the German government for medicinal use. The roots are used also for their healing power. The medicines of Echinacea can be found in health food stores and drug stores. Gardeners can also grow Echinacea and harvest the plant for medicine. Spring is considered the best time to harvest leaves. Flower heads are best harvested when ripe and roots in the fall or winter. Whether grown for their beauty, their use as an insect and bird provider, or the additional power of their medicine, all gardens need to have the power of Purple Coneflower growing in their soil. ou’ve probably seen people practicing T’ai Chi on TV, in a movie, or even locally, in a park or at the botanical garden. You know it’s a slow moving, graceful exercise that is supposed to be beneficial. You may have heard that at advanced levels it is a formidable martial art based on relaxation, yielding, and using an opponent’s energy against himself. But what do you really know about the many health benefits that can be gained from this wonderful, relaxing exercise system? T’ai Chi, when practiced regularly, has been said to improve relaxation, concentration, coordination, flexibility, postural alignment, and both physical and mental balance or centering. If some or all of this sounds intriguing to you, then we’d like to introduce you to the St. Louis T’ai Chi Ch’uan Association, a not-for-profit organization has been offering classes in the art of T’ai Chi Ch’uan since 1979. “The five principles we practice are: relax and sink, separate the weight, waist as commander, body upright and beautiful lady’s wrist, ” said Michael David, President of the Association. Mr. David has practiced the Yang Style Short Form, as taught by the Association for nearly twenty years. And like most of the Association’s students, T’ai Chi Ch’uan has changed his life in countless ways. Mr. David experienced a more relaxed manner at work, increased health and vitality, plus improved
balance and strength. David adds, “These benefits come subtly, like laying a sheet of paper on top of a sheet of paper. Over time, you find the way you sit, stand and move tends to change. You gain strength, balance, suppleness, stamina, and most of all, a more meditative approach to daily living.” For centuries, T’ai Chi Ch’uan was kept a closely-guarded family secret in China. But today, anyone with a sincere interest can learn the basics of the Form. With dedicated practice, some, if not all of the above benefits can be realized – something of value for the remainder of any student’s life. The Yang Style Short Form taught at the Association was condensed (mostly by eliminating repetitions) from the Long Form by Professor Cheng Man-Ch’ing, a supremely gifted master of t’ai chi ch’uan, painting, calligraphy, medicine and poetry. Benjamin Lo, one of the Professor’s senior students, has taught all of the Association’s current instructors. Now in his eighties, Mr. Lo still has strength, sensitivity and suppleness that must be felt to be believed. Yang Style T’ai Chi is characterized by slow, rhythmic movements of the body. The Form can be practiced at any age, requires no special equipment beyond comfortable, loose clothing and flat, thin-soled shoes. Once learned, the Form takes about eight minutes to practice. To learn more about T’ai Chi Ch’uan, call 314-961-1355 or go to www.taichistlouis.org Beginner classes start Sunday, Sept. 7 & 14, 2014 at the Monday Club in Webster Groves. A: Dandelions are actually quite nutritious and have been used to treat a variety of health problems. The entire plant is edible; flowers, leaves and the root. They are rich in betacarotene, magnesium, zinc and phosphorous. They also contain fiber, trace minerals, B vitamins and organic sodium. Most herbalists use the dandelion root to detox the liver and gallbladder. The leaves are used primarily for kidney function. Dandelions also help aid in digestion and can act as a laxative. It has also been shown to help balance the good bacteria in the gut. They also have antiinflammatory properties. They help flush toxins from muscles and joints and help to rid the body of uric acid. You should avoid dandelions if you are allergic to ragweed or members of the marigold family. Keep in mind that this plant can be a diuretic and cause other drugs to leave the body quicker so consult your physician if you are on other meds. Also remember that you don't have to go to your yard and pick your own dandelions. They come ready made in capsule form as well as teas or tinctures. However, if you decide to pick your own, make sure they are washed thoroughly and are free from any pesticides or other lawn care products.
Q: I know that eating blueberries and grapes are really good for me. They contain something in the skin that has health benefits. Is there some sort of pill that would have the same benefits? A: Yes, there is a great alternative. Acia Berries contain anthocyanins (the purple pigment that gives the fruit their color). Anthocyanins protect the artery walls from damage that can lead to plaque buildup and heart disease. They have also been used to help prevent high cholesterol, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and varicose veins. The berries contain the following vitamins: thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, iron, potassium, phosphorous, calcium, C and E. These are one of the highest antioxidant-producing fruits, therefore, helping to prevent free radical damage to the cells. With their protein and fiber content as well as supplying omega-6 and 9 fatty acids, this would be an excellent way to supplement your health. Placebo Effects on the Brain’s Inner Pharmacy: Quantum Uncertainty of Matching Reality with Expectation By Simon Yu, MD
A
placebo (Latin term for” I shall please”) treatment is considered a medically ineffectual treatment for a disease or medical condition intended to deceive the patient while professing to help the patient. According to the British Medical Journal published in 2004, 60% of the physicians in Israel used placebos in their medical practice, most commonly to “fend off” requests for unjustified medications or to calm the patient. A study of Danish general practitioners found 48% had prescribed a placebo at least 10 times in the past year. The most frequently prescribed placebos were usages of antibiotics for viral infections and vitamins for fatigue. Placebo effects have been a major controversial subject for the doctor-patient relationship and treatments based on calculated measured suggestions with sugar pills or sham surgery. The effects of placebos is a pervasive phenomenon known since ancient times. Some physicians advocate a proper usage of placebo should be encouraged for patients. Other physicians consider placebo treatments are ethically problematic as it introduces deception and dishonesty into the doctor-patient relationship. The placebo effect is related to the perceptions, beliefs, conditioning, and expectations of the patient. If the substance is viewed as helpful, it can promote healing even if the remedy is a sugar pill. However, if it is viewed as harmful, it can cause negative effects, known as the Nocebo effect. Because the placebo effect is based upon expectations and conditioning, the effect rapidly disappears if the patient is told that their placebo intervention is a sham and ineffective. Cultural background, quantity of pills, brand names, past experiences, and high prices, may all impact placebo effects. Injection and acupuncture have been known to have higher, larger placebo effects than pills. The latest study showed the brain can be manipulated by placebo. The brain controls the body process as documented by a high-resolution emission tomography (PET) scanner. Once dismissed as a psychological phenomenon, new evidence has established that a placebo triggers the brain’s “inner pharmacy”, that, in essence, is a warehouse perpetually stocked to deliver active drugs to itself. It can improve Parkinson’s symptoms, pain, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, schizophrenia and more. It is as though the brain goes out of its way to ensure “reality matches expectation” (Discover Magazine July/August 2014 by Erik Vance). The placebo effects are hard wired into our brain through the prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, and thalamus insula regions of the brain. These areas try to match the expectation with the reality. We are entering into the Quantum Uncertainty of Matching Reality with Expectation: Placebo or Nocebo effects which are also influenced by our intention and attention. A placebo does not work for everyone. Placebo effects occur in about 35% of the general population. In my opinion, alternative natural medicine and home-
opathy tend to attract people who had Nocebo effects (expecting bad side effects) of standard orthodox medical care. They are attracted to the milder, gentler therapies with higher expectations, beliefs, perceptions, and conditioning of what we call the placebo effects by my medical colleagues. Every day, I evaluate and treat my patients based on mapping out their bodies’ acupuncture meridian systems, which have been known for several thousand years. Often, I find allergies, heavy metals, hidden dental infections, and parasite problems that have been overlooked by conventional and alternative medical doctors. Those patients who read my articles or my book, Accidental Cure, and know what I do, get excited to follow my recommendations. As a rule, they do very well with faster, better responses. The patients who were dragged to my office by family members, and came with lots of hesitation and skepticism, usually take much longer to respond, or don’t respond at all, despite identifying problems similar to the patients who came to me willingly. The hesitant and skeptical patients often focus on the Nocebo Effects of all potential side effects of parasite medications and use excuses of the expense of dental work or the hardship of avoiding their favorite foods or drinks, in order to avoid complying with treatments. They want a guarantee that my therapies will help them. The more they demand some form of guarantee, it seems harder for them to respond. Your medical problems may not be what you think, what you have been told, or what has been diagnosed. For that matter, I do not dwell on your symptoms or diagnosis. A diagnosis only helps for the insurance companies to categorize you into a profile for medical treatment and payment. The shortcoming of categorizing and profiling, with branding a diagnosis, is that it never addresses the underlying problems. Placebo effects are a real phenomenon, hard wired into our brain by belief, intention, attention, expectation, conditioning, and perception. Understanding and maximizing the placebo effects on the brain’s inner pharmacy and minimizing the nocebo effects can make a difference as to why some people respond and some people do not respond. You as a patient decide, not the physician, to choose Placebo effects or Nocebo effects. Placebo or Nocebo, choose wisely. That is the quantum uncertainty of matching the reality with expectation.

Kids, School & Anxiety by Dr. James Feinberg Child Clinical Psychologist

ave you actually thought about whether or not your child or teen is psychologically prepared to return to school? My hunch is: probably not! Don’t feel bad. Typically, most parents don’t give this transition much thought. Granted, for many kids, this is an uneventful transition. For other kids, this transition back to school is the cause of great anxiety
and despair. So, which group does your kid belong to? To answer this question, a parent must take a trip down memory lane and recall how their child or teen responded to school resuming last year and perhaps, the year before that. Also, what did he say about school resuming in the past? Were his statements riddled with worry and despair, or what you would expect of a kid Dr. Feinberg with Grace as a puppy. returning to school?
Furthermore, what did his behaviors convey? Was he anxious and agitated, or fairly calm? In other words, unresolved problems occur over and over again until they’re resolved. On the other hand, before an actual pattern has emerged, parents typically have difficulty determining if their child or teen is really struggling, or merely reacting to situational factors like starting a new school, chemistry of kids in the classroom, and/or a new teacher. The rule of thumb in such situations is that kids and teens should only exhibit temporary and minor adjustment problems, and not ones that persist for several months or longer as well as occur year after year. Parental factors can also obscure whether or not a child is having significant adjustment problems. Because it’s heart wrenching for parents to admit that their child is struggling, sometimes they miss rather obvious signs of distress. And,
August, 2014 when parents finally do see such problems, then, they want to know why versus what action to take. The bottom line is that some kids may develop psychological problems because of hereditary factors and/or negative learning experiences. Although we can’t do anything about genetics, we can greatly influence how children and teens both think and feel about themselves as well as the world around them. By doing so, we greatly bolster their coping ability as well as their selfesteem. Furthermore, the earlier we intervene, the brighter your child’s future will be. So, be proactive; after all, your kid’s future depends upon it! And, if unsure if your child or teen is having emotional difficulties, please contact Dr. James Feinberg, child clinical psychologist, and his therapy dog extraordinaire, Grace, at 314-9660880. www.stlouischildpsychologist.com.
Green Tips For The Trip Back To School Article courtesy of the Clean Air Partnership
J
ust as quickly as it began, the end of summer is almost here. In just a few short weeks, students across the St. Louis area will be heading back to school. Amid the rush to fill supply lists and find the perfect back-to-school clothes, the environment may not be top of mind, but there are many easy ways to kick off the school year in a greener way and reduce our impact on the planet. The following tips can help you and your family go green as the kids prepare to go back to class: Reuse old supplies – Be sure to check to see what supplies may still be left from last year, and reuse those, rather than purchasing all new supplies. Purchase “green” supplies when needed – These items include recycled and chlorinefree paper and notebooks, pencils made from recycled newsprint and old denim, soy crayons, biodegradable pens made from cornstarch, and scissors made with recycled content. A variety of retailers now offer these eco-friendly options, making them easier than ever to purchase. Opt for used, rented or online textbooks – This is an easy way to reduce waste and save money. College students can take advantage of used titles offered at discounted prices by campus bookstores and websites like Amazon.com and eCampus.com. Many campuses also allow students to rent textbooks for a nominal fee and return them at the end of the semester. In addition, many schools are now encouraging the use of online textbooks. Purchase vintage and/or sustainable clothing – A trip to a gently used or vintage clothing store, flea market or consignment shop can be a great alternative to hitting the mall to purchase all new back-to-school duds. But for those who choose to hit the department store, there are many companies that specialize in sustainable clothing made from organic cotton and natural fibers. Share the ride, walk or bike to class – For kids that live close to school, walking and bik-
ing are great commuting options that also offer an opportunity to get some exercise. For those that live close to a school bus route, the bus can offer an eco-friendly way to get to class, especially as more districts purchase hybrid busses. And for those who must drive to class, neighborhood carpools can reduce emissions and also help parents and students save on gas. Think green when it comes to lunch – To reduce waste, ditch disposable bags and containers and replace them with lunchboxes or reusable lunch bags. Additional waste can be reduced by trading paper napkins for cloth ones and plastic utensils for reusable ones. A thermos is another more eco-conscious alternative to single-serving juice boxes. Also, check and see if your child’s school has a recycling program. If not, consider volunteering your time to help implement one. All of these ideas are simple, easy steps we can all take, and they can have a very positive impact on the environment and our air quality. To learn about additional ways you can live greener and do your share for cleaner air, visit the Clean Air Partnership’s website at www.cleanair-stlouis.com, find the organization on Facebook or follow them on Twitter @gatewaycleanair.

Countryside Montessori School
ountryside Montessori School is dedicated to the education of the whole child. Our goal is to meet each individual child’s need for intellectual, physical, social and emotional development. Our learning environment is designed to cultivate independence, individual responsibility, freedom of choice, concentration, problem-solving abilities, social interaction, competency in basic skills and a love of learning. By offering a superb Montessori education in a nurturing environment, Countryside strives to help children reach their full potential and become independent, life long learners. The Montessori method of education was created by Dr. Maria Montessori, Italy’s first woman physician. Early in the 20th century, Dr. Montessori developed her educational concepts and tested them at a center in Rome. Dr. Montessori cherished the uniqueness of each child and discovered that children learn best within environments that support individual development. She found that when children are in a home-like setting filled with developmentally appropriate materials, they become independent self-motivated learners. The Primary goal of a Montessori program is to help each child reach his or her full potential. The “whole child” approach taken by Dr. Maria Montessori fosters growth in all areas because the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive needs of a child are seen as inseparable. This approach encourages joy of learning and development of self-esteem. Current Preschool Openings. 12226 Ladue Road, (314) 434-2821 Creve Coeur, MO 63141 • www.montessori4children.com

hen one looks deeply into the present situation in the world, two things stand out as particularly important: the danger of war and the acceleration of the Earth’s ecological imbalance. There are, of course, many other problems: the economic debacle which affects many countries, especially in the West; the huge increases in the price of food, especially the staple diet of many millions; the huge, and growing, disparity in living standards between the rich and the poor. All of these problems are important and require early resolution. The two first named must command the attention of all sensible men and governments for they present the greatest threat to man’s well-being. world which has known the folly and futility of war at its most terrible has still not relinquished, totally, that abomination. The governments are seduced into thinking that old ways will, after all, render up their coveted prize. The weapons of war, therefore, have become indispensable and a major trading asset. While the weapons are there they will be used. Small wars beget large wars as more countries become involved. Large nations fight by proxy through their allies and so prolong unimportant quarrels into war. This major danger must be abandoned by all nations. It threatens the very existence of men on Earth. Apart from war, nothing so profoundly affects the future of all men as much as pollution. Some countries have recognised this fact and have taken some steps to limit pollution and global warming. Others, sometimes the chief polluters, deny the reality of global warming despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Daily, now, the climatic changes prove beyond doubt that the planet is sick and needs immediate and skilful care to re-establish equilibrium. Time is running out for men to halt the transformation which is being daily wrought on planet Earth. Every man, woman and child must play their part in the task. Time is, verily, running out. S.O.P. Have You Reviewed Your Current Medicare Supplement Insurance? by Michael Cohen
T
his article is to introduce myself to the readers of The Healthy Planet newspaper. I am Michael Cohen and I have been a resident of St. Louis all of my life. I am 69 and graduated high school in 1962. I went to the University Michael Cohen of Missouri at St. Louis until 1967 before entering The United States Marine Corp. After the Marines I went to work with my father at the family clothing store in Lemay. In 1975 I started in the life insurance business with Mutual Benefit Life where I became a broker, not just an agent. The idea behind a broker is that I can sell any health or life product that would serve my client in their best interest. In 1985 the insurance companies introduced a plan of insurance for people over the age of 65, created to fill the gap in the Medicare government sponsored plan. Today these plans are called Medicare Supplement Insurance and are available for three months before your 65th birthday, with No questions asked about your health. The
questions asked will be your name, birthday, address and do you share this address with a spouse or significant other. There could be a 5-12% reduction in the cost of the premiums if you share an address. These plans can be changed with no questions on the anniversary of your policy. Over time these plans have changed as well as their price. August Family Travel Imposes Concerns for Pet Care! by Dr. Doug Pernikoff, DVM
S
chool semesters start just around the corner. Early August is often a final chance opportunity for families to travel one last time this summer. Obviously, there will be decisions made regarding the care of their pets. Do they stay or do they go along?? What are pet owners’ options and considerations? If your pet is traveling with you, there are special considerations. Whether cat or dog, you need to have a way to contain or secure your pet during highway travel. Dog seatbelts are available in several styles, but a dog crate is useful as well. I always make sure my pet’s immunizations are up to date; be sure they are microchipped; take along plenty of food items familiar to his diet; and prepare your pet for car travel by familiarizing them to car movement. Take short rides first, and gradually increase times of travel. Never feed a full meal immediately prior travel, and in fact, I suggest minimizing feedings while en route, to avoid nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Be sure to carry a summary record of all current medical care. Your veterinarian will certainly provide a printed summary at your request. Further, remember that a pet or child can suffer heat stroke if left in a car, even for 10 minutes with windows cracked when ambient/outside temperatures are only 70 degrees farenheit, so be very alert to this concern. It is best to stop for potty breaks each 2-3 hours and again, be sure you have secure leashes to prevent sudden escapes. I encourage all pet owners to search out hotels/housing that is pet friendly, all along your journey. Don’t wait for an impulse option to find a place, as Murphy’s Law will foul up your plans. Finally, your veterinarian may suggest prescribing either Dramamine, Benadryl or another pharmacologic to quiet nervous pets during travel. Sedatives like Acepromazine may prove useful, but cannot be applied to pets with a history of seizures. In the event that your pet will fly with you, much of the same concerns described herein, are relevant here. Pets can be housed in a soft case and kept under the seat if size permits. Otherwise, expect the airlines to dictate housing your pet in cargo. In these cases, I do not feed solids prior travel, but do provide a water dish in the crate. Always contact your airlines well in advance to know what you need to do prior departure. You will require a current health certificate from your vet, of course. For pets that have to stay in town, the options would be to have someone either stay at your home, or visit daily at scheduled intervals. This is always best for cats who typically, do not accept change, like formal kenneling, as an alternative. In other cases, pet sitters may offer to keep your animals at their homes. This can be useful, as long as you take the time to visit the site and fully understand their care protocols. If it doesn’t feel right, it probably is a problem. In other cases, your veterinarian may offer to board. Selecting a proper kennel is an important choice that requires responsible considerations by you, as the pet owner. Visit the site. Talk to management about care protocols. Meet the kids actually doing the work. Remember that the kennel management may have the best intentions for your pet, but it still comes down to the actual care provided by the minimum wage kennel helper. I always suggest bringing your own pet food, rather than substituting with the kennel’s generic brand. This helps to eliminate unwanted intestinal
upsets. Be sure the kennel cleaning protocol removes all floor cleansers that may irritate the skin of pets in direct contact, or worse yet, may cause real concerns should the animals lick the residual chemicals off the floor. Again, most kennels require up to date vaccinations, and again, I encourage a kennel cough booster be updated within 6 months of kenneling. Leave all contact information for either you or your pet representative, as well as your veterinarian’s contact access numbers. Your due diligence and planning are key to successful, uneventful care of pets either traveling along with the family, or being managed at home or in a commercial kennel. Travel, be safe and enjoy these special family adventures. Fondly, Dr. Doug Pernikoff & Staff Clarkson-Wilson Veterinary Clinic Vet Pet Rescue Dpernikoff@gmail.com Follow us on Facebook!!!

What’s Wrong With Big Kitty? by Teresa Garden, DVM
I
first met Big Kitty in 2003. He showed up at my friend Shelley’s house looking down on his luck: dirty, old battle scars covering his face, and a torn and infected left eye lid. Shelley, being the kindhearted person that she is, managed to trap him and brought him in to my clinic. She did not know if he was feral or just another stray cat roaming the city streets. He was friendly and calm as soon as we let him out of the trap so we knew he was a stray at that point. Shelley already had 2 dogs, 2 cats, a variety of reptiles, a husband and a son under her care and she ran her own business. She needed another pet like an extra hole in the head. Shelley decided if Big Kitty was healthy he could stay outside on her property. He tested negative for Feline Leukemia Virus and FIV. We neutered Big Kitty, tended to his injured eye, and notched his left ear as part of the city’s trap and release program. This will alert Animal Control officers that the cat is neutered and negative for viruses so they will leave the cat alone. Shelley took Big Kitty home and released him outside. I called Shelley a few days later early in the morning to find out if Big Kitty was still hanging around and, if so, how was he doing. “Oh, he’s doing just fine. He’s cuddling next to me in bed right now. I burst out laughing. So, Big Kitty had managed to worm his way into the big house in 3 days. And by big house I mean BIG house. Shelley’s home is the Magic Chef Mansion in the city. She has dedicated the last 30 years of her life to lovingly restoring the mansion to its original Victorian grandeur. And now scruffy, dirty, and beat up Big Kitty is spending his nights in her beautiful antique bed. And, I realize, I have needlessly notched his ear since he is now a house cat and true pet. It is now 2012. Big Kitty has been living the good life for 9 years and he’s been a great cat. There has always been a myriad of activities at the Magic Chef Mansion. It is open for tours, corporate parties, fund-raisers, and weddings. It has been used to shoot TV commercials and to film a couple of movie scenes. Through it all, Big Kitty has remained unflappable, calm, sweet, social, and friendly. But now, for the last month, he has not been eating much, is depressed, and has lost significant weight. Blood tests suggest that Big Kitty has hepatic lipidosis which is also referred to as fatty liver syndrome. Feline hepatic lipidosis is characterized by an accumulation of fat within the liver cells. It is a syndrome of cyclic anorexia or inappetence that exacerbates the lipidosis which in turn worsens the anorexia. Hepatic lipidosis is usually secondary to a stressful illness or event. There were no other ill-
nesses detected in Big Kitty’s blood tests. Events that may trigger the disease are boarding, new pet or person in the house, owner absence, or recent diet change. In Big Kitty’s case it was a diet change. Shelley had innocently purchased a very similar food on sale. Unfortunately, Big Kitty did not want to eat it. The treatment for hepatic lipidosis is to get the cat to eat again. This will allow the liver to repair and regenerate. Often, switching back to the cat’s favorite food in the past will do the trick. This worked for big Kitty. Shelley bought his original food brand and offered fresh chicken. Big Kitty ate well, gained weight and his liver enzymes were back to normal in 2 weeks. However, some cats afflicted with hepatic lipidosis are not as fortunate. They may be so sick they have to be forced fed by their owners. This is not easy to do. Most cats resist it and often will not take in enough calories to meet their needs for recovery. These sick kitties often require placement of an esophagostomy feeding tube (E-tube). The feeding tube is inserted into the esophagus under anesthesia by a trained veterinarian. It is sutured in place and can be used for several weeks while the pet recovers at home. Pet owners can feed caloric-dense prescription foods such as Iam’s Max Cal, Hill’s AD, or Royal Canin Recovery Diet. These diets mix easily with a little water and can be instilled directly into the feeding tube. The tube will deliver the food into the esophagus and from there it will pass into the stomach. The cat gets its little belly full, feels better, and eventually will eat on its own. Anti-emetics can be given through the tube to help settle any nausea or vomiting. Once the cat’s body is receiving nourishment, the liver can start to repair. Feeding tubes are non-painful, easily tolerated by cats, and have saved many lives. At Animal Health & Healing we also prescribe liver supplements such as Feline Hepatic Support or Hepagen to give our kitty patients the best chance for optimal healing. It is now 2014. Big Kitty is still alive and well and residing in the big house. Shelley is well known for her wonderful sense of humor. So for the past 11 years she has mercilessly teased me about “maiming Big Kitty’s left ear. Over the course of the last year a truly feral cat with a notched left ear has (with great care and deliberation) decided to adopt me and my home. I have named her “Sweet Pea. Is this an odd coincidence or kitty karma? Keeping Your Dog Cool in Summer by Ava Frick, DVM
Y
ou want to exercise your dog but you also know the summer temperature and humidity can be dangerous. How do you keep your pooch cool and yet enjoy the outdoors? Try some of these options! 1. Walk early morning and later in the evening. The morning is the preferred time as the ground has had all night to cool off, therefore cooling the asphalt and cement so it is better on the paws. 2. For longer fur, clip the belly allowing for more ventilation. 3. Wet him down before you hit the road. Take a spray bottle of water to moisten as needed, helping to evaporate the heat. You can use it for his drinking water too. Does Your pet suffer From Allergies, Dry skin, Itchiness and Doggie Odor?
4. Find outlets where there are water sources like ponds, creeks, and pools. Minimally get a few stops where he can at least get his feet wet to help in cooling. Or make your own canine water park and have some fun playing in the water of your own back yard! 5. Neck coolie wraps are a lightweight, easy to apply, and an underutilized cooling method. Small plastic cooling gels covered with fabric that can be tied around the neck and sit over the carotid artery and jugular vein. As the blood in these vessels passes by the cooling wrap, the temperature of the internal arterial and venous blood is lowered. Keep these in your freezer and apply before you take your dog for a walk or outdoor play time in the summer. 6. Similar to the neck coolie is a body vest of similar design. This will be heavier but for a capable individual this will add additional body cooling on hot days. 7. If exercising outside is just not possible consider the underwater treadmill. It’s like you mallwalking; indoors, climate-controlled, gets the circulation going yet avoiding the heat and humidity. Another advantage for this exercise is that the overweight or older pet can walk easier since they weigh less in the water. Exercise can be fun for your pooch, and good for your health as well. Take plenty of water for both of you. If it will be a hotter day consider Pedialyte or Gator-aid type products to keep electrolytes in circulation. And by the way, those neck coolies work for you too! For more information you can contact Dr. Frick at 636-489-5350 or visit online at www.animalrehabstlouis.com.

Our approach to holistic health includes the entire body and the oral cavity is no exception. We are dedicated to serving our patients and promoting a level of health care that carefully evaluates and reviews the use of dental materials, dental procedures and also offers dietary and nutritional support for each and every individual that is seen in our office.
Did you know that examining the mouth can reveal the presence of illnesses or unstable conditions in other areas of the body? If you feel like you’ve just about exhausted all your options in your search for better health, have your mouth examined with a different approach in mind. Get motivated, get educated, and get ready to participate in a
health-oriented lifestyle that will provide dental alternatives and a nutritional foundation designed to help support your own body’s healing powers.
The focus of holistic dentistry is to consider the mouth as a part of the whole body. We use materials and methods that are more compatible biologically with the body instead of the traditional dental materials. Examples of non-compatible materials are mercury fillings, non-precious heavy metal crowns, bridges and partials or dentures. Alternatives to fluoride are used
for the prevention of cavities. Proper alignment of the jaws and teeth are the foundation of how the body perceives itself in space. The result of improper alignment can result in symptoms of headache, ears ringing, loss of hearing, pain in the head and neck and clenching or grinding of the teeth. Good nutrition is inseparable for good
health. If your diet consists of food and drink made with white flour, sugar and no fresh fruits and vegetables, your body is likely to be acidic with resultant more medical and dental problems. For your dental evaluation contact our office for an appointment by calling 636-4589090 or email at cherryhillsdds@yahoo.com.

Arts Integration + Arts Collaboration = Good for All
A
rts integration is the new buzz. It’s a sad fact that when budgets are tight in school districts, the arts are first to be reduced or even eliminated. That’s a serious mistake because we know the schools that value and support arts programs also have higher test scores across all subjects. The arts are critical for students’ full growth potential. Savvy educators are at work developing ways to include arts into core curriculum subjects, providing even students in districts with limited curriculum some exposure to the arts. That experience fosters lifelong appreciation for the arts, an enhanced quality of life. Illustrating a written assignment, considering the mathematical balance of a piece of music, acting out a literary reading—any way to incorporate the arts into other subjects is good. Kudos to the Pulitzer Arts Foundation for presenting the Marfa Dialogues this summer as a continuing examination of artistic practice, climate change science, and civic engagement. The arts bring more than beauty to the world; they bring creative thinking that can result in creative solutions to many of the world’s concerns. The program wraps up on August 3. Later this month, the Pulitzer’s building will be closed for renovation until its new exhibition opens in 2015. To find out the results of these important meetings, visit www.marfadialogues.org.

Wouldn’t it be great to have similar public installations on a regular (maybe biennial) basis? Along with integration, the concept of collaboration is major, especially in the arts. Arts organizations are finding that they can accomplish much more by working in partnership with other groups in our community than any one group could ever do alone. It just makes sense to pool resources. Art-funders want to see that the money they give to nonprofit arts groups is stretched as much as possible---and collaboration is the way to do that. Sometimes the art is “the major attraction. No one goes to Millennium Park in Chicago without snapping pictures of Anish Kapoor’s “Cloud Gate sculpture (affectionately referred to as “The Bean). The giant silver sculpture allows visitors intriguing reflections of the city surrounding it. It’s constantly surrounded by crowds. The same excitement is being generated right now in downtown St. Louis. How could anyone miss the Arch when crossing the Mississippi into St. Louis? It’s more than a sculpture; it’s a magnet! And its pull promises to be even more powerful as the CityArchRiver 2015 Project moves along. The public-private collaboration of this invigorating project is inspiring. Part of the CityArchRiver 2015 Project includes a temporary public art exhibition on the Mississippi Riverfront. This project kicks off in August to give visitors more to explore. Earlier this year, Great Rivers Greenway and CityArchRiver sent out a Call for Curators. As we go to press, three internationally known finalists are under consideration, with the selected curator to be announced in mid-August. Visit www.cityarchriver.org to learn more. Photo Rejuvenation or Red Light Therapy
is the use of light to create an anti-aging effect on the skin and is quickly becoming recognized as one of the safest, fastest and most affordable ways to achieve younger, more vibrant looking skin. Physicians and aestheticians agree, it is the most powerful and effective way to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the skin. Visible red (620nm-700nm) light shows at least 24 different positive changes at a cellular level. Red light penetrates into the derma layer of the skin, energizing the cells, thereby helping to create collagen, which helps to plump up the skin, and elastin, which helps to firm the skin and diminish fine lines and wrinkles.
Red Light Therapy Benefits: • Restores skin cells • Reduces fine lines, scars, acne, wrinkles, stretch marks and age spots • Stimulates collagen synthesis • Smooths and reduces cellulite deposits
