he Holidays are a time for celebrating with good friends and family. Even though the weather outside might be frightful, good friends are so delightful. Nothing warms your heart more than a trusted old friend. And that brings me to my my warmest old friend Charlie. Charlie is always there for me when I need a warm hug. He comforts me when life’s chills happen upon me. He is always near when I need his comfort. I trust Charlie to provide me with the strength I need to make it through even the frostiest of times. He is always close to my heart. You see, Charlie is my favorite sweater. I named him Charlie because of the zig-zag design on the front like Charlie Brown. He may not be the most stylish, or the most custom fit friend a person can have, but to me he’s my “go to” pullover. My family often snubs Charlie and calls him “ugly” and “ridiculous.” But Charlie and I have been BFs for more than twenty years now. We have weathered many tempests on the golf course and Charlie even kept me warm while I snowshoed high in the Colorado Rockies. My daughters have even gone

December, 2013 so far as to try and hide Charlie from me. But I always manage to rescue him from the donation bag. I replace Charlie with another sweater in the donation bag so someone in need does not go cold and I still have my comfy comrade. Hey, this friendship didn’t start out so great. When I first got Charlie for Christmas over two decades ago as a gift from my sister-in-law, he was pretty tight and itchy. I wasn’t sure we would be a good match. Wool sweaters tend to need some breaking in. But today Charlie fits like the final puzzle piece. In fact I have him on right now while I write this column. I am sure all of you have a trusted and somewhat outdated piece of clothing that you would never part with. A pair of shoes, an old scarf or a favorite t-shirt. And I won’t even Charlie begin to go through your sock drawer and start throwing out all those ancient argyles. The fact is, we keep those who mean the most to us closest to our hearts no matter what others say. As long as I need warmth and comfort, this old friend will be by my side, especially during the chilly holidays while I hold my grandson Jackson in my arms for his first Christmas .... with Charlie. I want to welcome our new cartoonist, Phil Berwick to the Healthy Planet. Phil’s cartoon “Merferd & The Treetoons” will appear each month on the inside back cover for everyone to enjoy. Phil is an arborist and president of Living Tree Care. He is a local artist whose love for trees rivals only his love of cartooning. He hopes to get syndicated someday, one strip at a time. Happy Holidays from everyone at The Healthy Planet, Charlie, too! J.B. Lester; Publisher

Then there is that eggnog—oh, the eggnog! Talk about a calorie catastrophe. As if all of those yummy foods weren’t derailing your healthy diet enough, you may also have tasty treats lying around, including leftover Halloween candy, homemade cookies and confections often given as gifts to celebrate the season. While it’s a fun tradition to celebrate the holidays with scrumptious, rich foods and beverages, it can lead to the not-so-fun tradition of seasonal weight gain. Although research has shown that weight gain during the holiday is often minimal—averaging about one to two pounds—the real problem is that we usually don’t lose those extra pounds. The result is weight gain that creeps up on us year after year. After a decade of holiday feasting, you could be carrying around an extra 10-20 pounds, which doesn’t seem so minimal. It’s easy to see how the extra weight accumulates. Not being at a healthy weight puts you at risk for chronic diseases, including heart disease and diabetes. However, with a few simple strategies, it’s easy to avoid the weight gain. Add equal parts preparation and motivation, add a dash of creativity, and, voila—a healthy holiday season.

Don’t drink your calories. Most alcoholic beverages and holiday drinks (eggnog, cider, and punch) provide empty calories. Stick with calorie-free beverages, like water or unsweetened tea. Never go to a party or sit down to a holiday meal starving. Have a small, fiber-packed snack and drink a tall glass of water before any big meal to avoid overeating. Practice portion control. Indulge in those specialoccasion, family-recipe foods, but keep the portions small. Put vegetables and fruit on your plate first, and serve yourself smaller portions of protein foods and grains. Eat slowly. It takes your stomach about 20 minutes to send signals to your brain that you’re full. Really take time to savor each delicious bite. Rather than hanging around the appetizers or going back up for “seconds,” take yourself away from the food and focus on spending time catching up with family and friends. You’ll enjoy stimulating conversation and avoid mindless munching. Get rid of leftover holiday candies and treats. Enjoy a few, then toss them. Out of sight, out of mind. As we enjoy our holiday meals, please bear in mind that some of our neighbors struggle to put food on the table for themselves and their families. We hope you will consider making a year-end gift to Operation Food Search. You can count on us to make wise use of your resources and provide nutritious food to those who count on us this holiday season. Please make your taxdeductible donation by December 31st. Together, we will Nourish our Neighbors in Need. Visit www.OperationFoodSearch.org to donate. We count YOU among our blessings.

Green Your Holiday Season by Crystal Moore-Stevens

s the hustle and bustle of the holiday season approaches, try to breathe deeply and know that there are many ways to keep your earth stewardship alive this time of year. Reduce your carbon footprint by helping to limit your part in the viscous waste cycle and shopping frenzy that is inevitable with the Holiday Season. Keep your sanity & dodge the crowds. Instead of shopping at the big box stores, support local “mom and pop” shops. Here are several eco friendly tips: • Re-use gift wrap, tissue paper and gift bags. • Wrap your gifts in old magazines. Since we are farmers, we use old seed catalogs to wrap gifts. • Switch to reusable gift wrapping such as fabric, cloth bags, and twine. Engage your family members in a “green gift wrapping contest” to inspire them to be a little more eco-friendly. • Give useful, practical and thoughtful gifts. • Try to avoid buying gifts with excess packaging. • Be the recycling ambassador in your family. Offer to take the recycling this holiday season or even better, at all of your family gatherings. • Give the Gift of Experience (The Zoo, The Magic House and the Botanical Gardens all have affordable family memberships) • For your health conscious friends or family members, CSA memberships are a perfect gift. They can receive fresh fruits and veggies from mid May through

mid November. Visit www.lavistacsa.org to buy a CSA membership! If you want to avoid buying gifts altogether, channel your inner artist and fulfill the intrinsic need to create. Making your own gifts allows for a creative outlet; the process is fun and rewarding. Save money by using materials that you already have. Handmade gifts are meaningful and can be personalized. he holidays are a time that can stir up allot of things. It is a time with heavy focus on family and special times for family to get together. There are many that the holidays just magnify their aloneness and lack of family connection. Depression can often increase during this time. The issue of love or the lack of gets really loud. The following are some tips to help you manage this time in a healthy way. 1. Having Healthy Rituals Take time to celebrate. Be creative. Introduce some new ways with friends and family…some new rituals in your life that can nurture you. 2. Forgiveness Carrying an unforgiving energy is very toxic to your being. We need to let go of things we cannot change. Spend some time resolving some issues of forgiveness in your life. 3. Connection Have a plan to bring a deeper connection to others in your life. Take the risk. You can do it! 4. Love The power that overcomes Fear, Guilt, Shame, Blame, and Anger is “LOVE”. 5. Gratitude/Being Thankful We need to count our blessings and all that we

‘Heart of Love’ - 28th World Peace Day By Jeannie Breeze

W

e know that peace is an "inside job", one that begins with us, and we know that peace radiates from us when we express from the Heart of Love. Because we literally live in the Heart Center of "Turtle Island" (North America), where major arteries come together - the Mississippi, the Missouri, the Meramec - the energy we generate here is powerful and farreaching. We know that LOVE is the answer. Please join with us to celebrate the Heart of Love at the 28th annual World Peace Day Celebration Dec. 31, 2013, 6 a.m. at Central Reform Congregation, 5020 Waterman (at Kingshighway), in St. Louis' Central West End. Doors open at 5:15 a.m. for this Universal Faith Service, free and open to all and a potluck breakfast follows (no pork or shellfish, please). We are blessed this year to have Maggid & Songbird Georgy Rock to share story and song, accompanied musically by the multi-talented Mr. Dill. You will thrill to the soaring sounds of Robert Fishbone on shofar, gong & drum, delight in the mystical musings of Raven Wolf C. Felton Jennings II on flute, saxophone, drum & vocal chant. You'll love the magical melodies of Tim Mead with guitar & vocals. Rabbi Randy Fleisher will offer warm welcome and Green Jean Ponzi will help us remember how to love & care for the Earth. I will facilitate the meditation, and we will all be enchanted by the bells and brought to life by the drums of JOIA World Percussion Ensemble. Volunteers are needed on Monday, Dec. 30 to help with breakfast prep, luminaria preparation & other decoration, and early Dec. 31 to light the luminarias and finalize breakfast setup. E-mail me at jjbreeze46@gmail.com or

call me at 314-601-3789 to sign up. We have a raffle for 4 fabulous prizes – a beautiful Reikiinfused healing Angel blanket from Improved Healing, an amazing hand-crafted wooden drum from Dick Schmidt, a wild wreath from Willow Rain Herbal Goods, and a limited edition copy of Sarah Linquist’s exquisite book Onward Is Best: A Christmas Journey. Visit the World Peace Day web site at www.wpdaystl.com and view the “How you can support the event” page for details. Bless you for continuing to support this wonderful event with your presence and your financial support! I know that world events can often seem overwhelming and discouraging. Keep the faith. Sleep and Sleep deficit: How It Affects Your Health by Varsha Rathod, M.D.

W

e all know what it means to sleep and feel rested. Medically, sleep refers to a suspended state of consciousness, sensory activity, and voluntary muscle activity. It is an anabolic state, which means that it fosters growth and repair of the body, especially rejuvenation of the immune, nervous, and musculo-skeletal systems. I teach patients that the best credit into their wellness bank account is to get good quality sleep. Sleep is an essential component of healing from chronic illness. The goal here is not to rely on medication or supplements, but to figure out and remedy the root cause(s) of sleep problems. These may be allergies, constipation, chronic fatigue, hormonal problems, chronic inflammation and structural problems, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, poor nutrition, inadequate movement and exercise, troubled relationships, or psychiatric problems, etc. Often the cause of sleep deprivation can also be the cause of chronic illness and vice versa. What simple lifestyle changes can help? 1. Avoid stimulants after 12 pm. Stimulants to monitor are: coffee, nicotine, teas, and energy drinks. 2. Make an effort to increase your nutritional intelligence and habits. More than 90% of each meal should come from a whole food, plant-based diet. It is wise to keep dinner light

in protein and calories; breakfast and lunch should be the key caloric meals. 3. Exercise for one half hour during the day, and avoid exercise at least 4 hours prior to bed-time. This practice has been shown to improve sleep over a few months. 4. Allow yourself an hour of winddown time, preferably with an activity such as reading, meditating, prayer, family or social time. Avoid TV and alcohol before bedtime. 5. Keep your bedtime and waking time fairly consistent. 6. Avoid LED lights in the bedroom. It is best to keep your sleep environment devoid of any light sources and keep your bedroom temperature between 60- 67 degrees. If you are a light sleeper, consider a white noise machine. Achieving proper sleep hygiene is a journey. It can be long and complex for some, or short and simple for others. I have presented a few ideas that may help you begin the process. I am convinced that developing a peaceful sleep regimen is well worth the effort and will reward you mentally, physically, and spiritually. Dr. Varsha Rathod is a board certified Rheumatologist and Internist at Preventive Medicine in the Westport Plaza Area of St. Louis, MO. The practice has focused on a combination of traditional and holistic medicine since 1967. Ask The

HERB LADY Cathy Schram Q: I have dry eye syndrome. What causes this and are there any supplements that may help this condition? A: Dry eye syndrome (DES) is a very common problem, particularly among peri and post-menopausal women. The eyes have ocular layers that make up the tear film. There are three different layers in the tear film. Each of these layers needs nutrition to remain healthy. Vitamins and minerals promote structure and function. The layers are as follows: Mucin – This layer touches the cornea and nourishes the front of the eye. It anchors the tear film and keeps the eye moist. Vitamin A is essential in the development of the mucin of the tear film. Aqueous – This is the middle layer that provides moisture, oxygen and nutrients to the cornea, such as zinc, magnesium, vitamin C, E, B6 and niacin. Lipid – This layer is our front line of defense against infection, solar radiation and injury to the outside of the ocular surface. It keeps tears from evaporating and provides a smooth film over the cornea when we blink. Most cases of DES involve this layer. Since this is the oily layer, it needs essential fatty

he modern day use of dental anesthesia has been effectively administered for over 50 years. Its purpose, of course, was to reduce or eliminate the painful effects associated with most dental procedures. Local anesthetics such as lidocaine, polocaine, mepivicaine, septicaine and marcaine are routinely used in our office along with nitrous oxide (laughing gas), and valium as needed to ensure that our patients can experience a safe, and even a relaxing, dental visit. But for those individuals who wish to complete all their dental work at one time or to successfully treat an anxious or phobic condition, conscious sedation is the preferred choice for these patients. Providing this service to our patients has been a well received addition to our practice. Conscious sedation is defined as a technique in which the use of a drug, or drugs, produces a state of depression of the central nervous system enabling treatment to be carried out while verbal contact with the patient is maintained throughout the period of sedation. Patients usually have no memory of the entire dental procedure. This leads the patient to think they were asleep during the treatment when, in reality, they were awake, but comfortable, at all times. In our office, we provide a two team, multi-disciplinary approach for conscious sedation. As the dentist, I’m given the opportunity to focus solely on the dental procedures because the anesthesiologist (present during the entire procedure) monitors and attends to our patient’s sedation needs. Midazolam (Versed) is the drug of choice for conscious sedation. In general, midazolam has a fast-acting, short-lived sedative effect when given intra-

acids. This would include omega-3 from fish oils, flax and/or algae, and omega-6 from evening primrose oil, borage oil or black currant seed oil. There are many causes of DES, such as smoking, inflammation and poor diet. Even those who have had their gall bladder removed may suffer from DES due to diminished fat processing. This can be remedied by taking a digestive enzyme to break down the fat you consume. So, one of the most effective treatments for DES is to use a combination of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids with a blend of vitamins, A, D, E and C and the minerals magnesium and zinc.

venously, achieving sedation within one to five minutes and peaking within 30 minutes. The effects of midazolam typically last one hour but may persist for six hours (including the amnesic effect). Patients who receive midazolam for conscious sedation should not be allowed to drive home after the procedure. The proper equipment must also be in place and organized for monitoring the patient's blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, level of consciousness, and, most important, the oxygen saturation (the measure of oxygen perfusion inside the body) with a pulse oximeter (a machine that provides a continuous realtime recording of oxygenation). The vital signs are monitored by the anesthesiologist before the start of the administration of medications and then continuously monitored thereafter until the procedure is completed. Choosing the proper dental anesthesia can certainly make a significant difference in the anticipated outcome for your dental care. Conscious sedation may be the right choice for you. Our ultimate goal is to provide a safe, comfortable and relaxing environment with your dentist/anesthesiologist team working together as we perform our biological services for you. Goodnight Gardens

T

he end of the calendar year for gardeners is like the quiet time at the end of day, when adults tuck their children into bed, read them bedtime stories and say goodnight. Gardeners can do the same as gardens are tidied and tucked to bed before the long winter’s rest. Using the classic and beloved Goodnight Moon as inspiration, a gardener can say goodnight to their garden as the final gesture of fall. Create a “Goodnight Garden” by making a list of the things loved, enjoyed and important from last season’s garden. Find words that rhyme, and let the writing of Margaret Wise Brown become your muse. Let creativity flow, even if it sounds silly. Here’s one version of saying goodnight to a garden. In the great garden of green there are memories of the growing season to be seen. The herbs of parsley, rosemary and sages and the towering tomatoes grown in cages The glorious colorful flowers that rejoiced in the rain and gentle showers The honey, mason and native bees that pollinated the fruits of the trees The tall evergreen white pines that sheltered birds and climbing vines The dogwood with robins,

The sun, moon and stars watching from above knowing the gardener and garden were united in love Good night garden of green. Goodnight all to be seen.

Earthworms’ Castings with Jean Ponzi

BarE trEEs One bright morning in early November My eyes open into a lattice of branches: The colors are gone! The leafy space empty! What happened to this Growing Season? This year’s Spring bestirred so slowly . . . Chilly rains kept April creeping Life-force, tempered, held back buds Until a mid-May BURST of Greening Summer days were mild, a blessing So many nights cooled just by breezes With rain enough to naturally water ‘Til Dog Star beams ignited August. Through all this round of leaves a-flutter Did I feel the heat of Living? Yes, I picked and savored basil, tomatoes, Frolicked through the fêtes of Summer Enjoyed the early Autumn dazzle But did I absorb Earth’s essence, really? Big Green, turned brown, morphs into compost Life cycles into deeper feelings This isn’t a problem – I’m not complaining I love perspective stilled by Winter:

Stark, clear views-through the tangled places Obscured by small-L life’s profusion I treasure the season when frozen waters, Reveal, in stillness, inner patterns, The busy habits of thought and feeling, And chill-out pace sustains reflection: Resolve to better feel this Living. Now morning views are planar beauty. Sketched on the sky, a linear matrix, In skeletal browns and grays of Winter Earth’s archetypal architecture. In the bare trees, Life rests, waiting To rouse and grow and Green all Being. Third Time Is Charming...

“I

suppose you know what this call is about,” said the voice on the other end of the phone. “Frankly, no, I don’t!” was my instant reply. The call came unexpectedly from Governor Jay Nixon’s office in late September. To say that it shocked me is a major understatement. In 2010, I was asked to design the ornaments for Missouri’s tree at the National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony and display in Washington, D.C. It was a once-in-a-lifetime honor and I was thrilled to be “the” artist given that task. In 2011, when I was asked a second time, I could hardly believe it. But now, in 2013, I pinched myself to comprehend that this honor has come a third time. Oh, wow, oh, wow, oh, wow………….I sank into a chair and let it all sink in, my mind already swimming with design ideas. The National Christmas Tree grows in President’s Park, just behind the White House in Washington, D.C. Decorating and lighting the tree is the longest continual tradition that the White House and National Parks Foundation host each year (it was decorated but not lighted during WWII black-outs, and delayed in 1963 following President Kennedy’s assassination). Surrounding this big tree (believe me, it’s a BIG tree!!), are 56 smaller cut trees to represent each state and territory (Can you name all of the U.S. territories?

ARTful Living St. Louis Area Fine Arts, Crafts & Performing Arts Michelle “Mike” Ochonicky, Arts Editor Answers at the end of this column). One artist from each is selected to create the design; one school from each is also selected as “artist’s assistants” to replicate the design. I love working with these budding artists! It always amazes me to see how they happily rise to the task. Kirkwood High School was chosen this year. Working with teachers Nancy Grimes, Leslie Benben and their students was delightful. I designed the project to have many stages, allowing as many students as possible to put a hand on this important project. A total of 114 students had a part in the creation of 23 ornaments, and every one of them did a remarkable job! We finished all the ornaments in one very busy day. Because the tree is outdoors, these ornaments must withstand whatever the Potomac River and win-

ter deliver, be it rain, snow, sleet, wind, sun or ice. So, the large plexiglass spheres were reverse-glass painted. That means all the painting had to be done on the inside of the spheres and in reverse: details painted first, lettering painted backwards, etc. Oh, and the surface is rounded and convex. Not easy!! This year, Missouri’s ornaments feature a dove, symbolizing the wish for peace---on a local, state, national and international level. Instead of the traditional olive branch, however, this dove clutches a dogwood branch and a hawthorn branch (Missouri’s state tree and flower). Let peace begin right here! The back of the ornament proudly spells out Missouri, with the “M” partially formed by our Gateway Arch, a National Parks monument. Wrapped around the Arch and underlining the state is a colorful strand of

December, 2013 holiday lights. On the bottom of the ornament, “2013” will tell future generations which year these works were made. All of this is set on a background of limegreen swirls on gold to symbolize the richness of Missouri’s natural beauty in a contemporary way. Hand-curled golden wire tops each ornament with a bit of whimsy. As this is written, the ornaments have been boxed and shipped to Washington, D.C. On December 6, with 30,000+ people in attendance and millions watching on live television, President Obama and the First Family will light the National Christmas Tree plus all 56 of the surrounding trees (have you named the territories yet?) to officially start the holiday season in our nation’s capital. Entertainment by a lineup of great musical performers rounds out the festivities. It’s amazing to see this event from the “other” side: Although the evening program begins at dark, we guests must arrive very early in the afternoon to pass through the most stringent security possible. The event is outdoors…in the cold….in the wind…waiting for hours…and not minding a minute of it. I’ll be freezing, but smiling, excited to be part of it all, especially this year on my birthday! As always, whatever tradition you celebrate at this special time of year, may yours be happy and filled with wonderful memories to keep your heart warm all winter long. The six U.S. Territories are: American Samoa, Guam, North Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, and, of course, the District of Columbia itself.

Ho, Ho, Ho ... Santa Says To Protect Your Pets From The Dangers of The Christmas Tree by Dr. Doug Pernikoff, DVM

C

hristmas is a wonderful time for family and friends to share the miracle of life, with all the love and merriment of the holiday season. Our homes are adorned with holiday lighting, poinsettia plants and mistletoe. Lots of goodies like brownies and other wonderfully fattening foodstuffs, and of course, the central adornment being the family Christmas Tree that umbrellas a score of presents of all sizes and shapes, covering the tree’s base. So, What’s To Worry???? Let me tell you what to be alert to in order to protect your beloved family pets from potential dangers insidiously integrated into this most joyful holiday setting. As with Thanksgiving, there are any number of food items that can encourage intestinal problems in our dogs and cats, some that can even prove life threatening. With Christmas, a new further collection of potential health issues can arise with our pets’ exposure to many of those objects associated with Christmas, and in particular, regarding our Christmas Trees. Puppies and especially kittens or cats, are notoriously interested in exploring and grasping objects into their mouths. Electric cords to light our trees can be very concerning, causing any degree of damage from simple skin burns to actual electrocution through biting and chewing actions. Try to keep them covered and out of direct access to our pets. Another significant issue regards the yarn, string and other binding objects associated with all those exciting presents surrounding the tree. In particular, cats will begin to play with loose ends of these twine like objects, and will actually begin chewing and swallowing them without good reason. The same issue concerns reflective tinsel dangling from Christmas Tree branches, a real bait for our predatory cats, who love the motion as well as the reflectivity of this item. As the cat swallows these items, they move slowly along the intestinal tract, after a portion exits the stomach. The bowel inherently attempts to contract and move the string items along, and as a result, causes a bunching up of intestines. Soon the intestines have tightened up and as their contractility persists, can actually scissor through the lining, eventually rupturing and allowing dangerous intestinal bacteria and debris to fall free into the abdominal cavity. A life threat-

ening condition called peritonitis can ensue, and nary an evening passes at the Emergency clinic without a very sick cat entering in need of immediate and significantly dangerous surgical exploration and more. And remember that any plastic or glass ornament can break, exposing pets to lacerations, or again, if ingested, and only God knows why they would do so, may impose serious medical and surgical needs in caring for our animal patients. Many people adorn their Christmas Trees with chocolate candies, that we have learned in the past, can prove toxic to our family pets. Keep such items well away from Fido and Felix. Finally, remember that animals will explore and chew at plants that are featured at the holiday time. Poinsettias and mistletoe, can both be irritating and if ingested in large amounts, can prove very toxic. As with any of these concerns mentioned herein, I encourage committed pet owners to take serious note to prevent any of these potential calamities to occur, most certainly impacting the peace and tranquility intended for all of us to enjoy this wonderful holiday time. Be well! Be safe! Enjoy the Christmas and New Year season with all your family, your friends and of course, your family pets. All my love! Laser Therapy For Your Pet by Teresa Garden, DVM

T

he term “laser” has been found in scientific papers dating back to 1959. Laser is an acronym for “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation”. Laser therapy is essentially light therapy. The light delivered by the laser converts to energy the body can use. Therapeutic lasers are used for healing. They are not the same as lasers used for surgery. Surgical lasers can be used for ablation, cutting, and thermally coagulating tissue. Therapeutic lasers have been used throughout the world for many years. They were approved by the FDA for use in our country in 2002. A therapeutic laser amplifies light which is emitted in the form of photons. The photons have specific wavelengths that allow them to be absorbed by biological tissue on contact. Once the photons are absorbed, they induce activity at the molecular, cellular, and tissue level. These activities fall into three major categories: increasing healing, decreasing inflammation, and decreasing pain. Laser therapy accomplishes these feats by increasing localized blood flow, increasing the enzyme ATP, and increasing protein synthesis. Laser therapy decreases the pain response by increasing endorphin and serotonin production, normalizing nerve cell action potentials and generating new blood vessels and neurons. Overall, laser therapy supplies the proper energy cells needed to heal and to conduct their normal functions. It stimulates the body to heal from within. Laser therapy is now an accepted treatment modality in veterinary medicine and is readily available. The understanding of laser science has advanced tremendously within the last five years. Technology and scientific studies have confirmed its validity and repeatability in the treatment of many conditions. There is now a multitude of clinical trials, peer-reviewed research and systematic reviews supporting the effectiveness of lasers in treating people and companion animals. There are many practical advantages of laser therapy in veterinary medicine. It is an affordable, drug-free, surgery-free, and non-invasive holistic treatment modality. Most treatments take only a matter of minutes. Pets will often feel a gentle and soothing warmth from the laser light, allowing them to relax and enjoy the treatment. During treatments pets will get almost immediate relief from pain and anxiety. At Animal Health & Healing we will often combine laser therapy with both conventional and holistic treatment protocols to achieve optimal results. Both acute and chronic conditions may be helped with laser therapy. Wounds, abscesses, abrasions, and hot spots are acute skin ailments that often will heal in half the time when laser therapy is employed along with conventional treatment. Acute trauma such as sprains, strains, partial ligament tears, and animal bites can successfully be treated with laser therapy. It helps the tissue to heal quickly by decreasing inflammation and infection. Our patients feel better since the treatment also relieves pain. We routinely use laser therapy post-operatively for spays, neuters,

dental prophies, and wound repair for the same reasons: it promotes healing and decreases pain. Chronic diseases afflicting many of our pets can be treated and managed with laser therapy. Treatment protocols will consist of 6-10 treatments followed by monthly maintenance treatments. Pets suffering from arthritis, degenerative joint disease, elbow and hip dysplasia, and intervertebral disc disease can all benefit from laser therapy. Laser therapy will aid in pain control. This can result in decreased or avoidance of NSAID use. Ear infections (both acute and chronic) can respond to laser therapy. The treatment will fight infection from bacteria and yeast and will decrease ear pain, itching, and scratching. Almost any condition that produces inflammation may benefit from laser therapy. It can help pets recover from pancreatitis, bladder infections, lick granulomas, stomatitis, gingivitis, and periodontal disease. Laser therapy is still a relatively new treatment modality in veterinary medicine. As such, its full potential for use is most likely not yet being achieved. In the human medical field laser therapy is being explored for treating traumatic brain injury, stroke, and spinal cord injury. In veterinary medicine it is just starting to be used to treat paralysis and epilepsy. There are precautions and contraindications for employing laser therapy. It cannot be used on the eyes, thyroid gland, reproductive organs, or any cancer. Protective eyewear must be worn by veterinary staff and our patients. Pets look really cool wearing their “doggles” and their human companions enjoy the pics! But most of all, we all enjoy seeing pets responding well to this new, effective, and safe treatment modality. t. Louis Green, in partnership with Walmart, is once again working to collect unwanted holiday lights. With over 400 collection sites, the partnership hopes to continue building off of last year's success. According to St. Louis Green founder, Craig Jung, "Our goal this year is 136,000 pounds of lights diverted from local landfills." Once collected, the lights will be recycled and sent back to manufacturers to be used in new products. A portion of the drive proceeds will go to Operation Food Search, a St. Louis area food bank. The 2013 drive will be returning to Springfield, Columbia, Cape Girardeau, and the Metro East area of Illinois and this year expanding to Branson. The collection sites, including over 75 participating Walmart locations, can be found at http://stlouisgreen.com. Lights can be dropped off at the Walmart locations through December 29th, and all other locations through January 12th. Last year, the drive received two statewide awards. The Missouri Recycling Association

honored both St. Louis Green and Walmart with its Outstanding Collection Program award. In addition, the Missouri Waste Control Coalition gave the retailer and non-profit organization its Outstanding Achievement award for Environmental Stewardship. St. Louis Green, Inc., was founded to address a need in the St. Louis community for information about green businesses, green products, and green events. Founder and Executive Director, Craig Jung, noticed that people were looking for information and education about sustainable lifestyles. In 2007, he created StLouisGreen.com, a resource for everything green in the St. Louis region. The mission of the 501(c)3 non-profit organization is to empower others to learn about and implement sustainable lifestyles. This is accomplished through programs that educate, support, and empower citizens and businesses of the St. Louis area to make changes in their daily living toward a greener, more sustainable world. Acupressure Massage For Better Health

A

cupressure is an ancient healing art using the fingers to gradually press key healing points, which stimulate the body's natural self-curative abilities. The pressure to the key points of the body alleviates the buildup of toxins in our tissues that cause stiffness in the body which encourages the body to undergo natural self-healing, such as releasing tension, allowing good blood circulation and balancing the body’s energy, all of which strengthens resistance to disease and promotes wellness. Yue Ma, of Yue Ma Massage, specializes in Accupressure Massage and combines other techniques such as Deep Tissue Massage, Hot Stones, Japanese Shiatsu, Swedish Relaxation, Reflexology and more. Her philosophy is “The body is like a River. Everything is connected.”

Beth Wasserstrom, an Occupational Therapist and client of Yue Ma, says “I have been going to Yue Ma for about a year and a half. I have played sports my entire life and was looking for someone who could be a long term partner in helping me stay healthy and injury-free. As an Occupational Therapist, I

have seen repeatedly how an individual who has had an injury in one part of their body, like a hip or knee, can in turn, quickly have secondary problems in their neck or shoulders as a result of how they carry their body. I never have to tell Yue Ma where I might be tender or aching, she always finds the spot and focuses on the other muscles and joints that influence that area. I usually come to her office every three to four weeks and I have had only one small cold in the 18 months I have been seeing her, when normally I would get several colds a year. She has great pride in her business and truly cares about her clients. She works hard to fit people in when it is convenient and sees clients 7 days a week and even most holidays. It is reassuring, because earlier this year, I strained my neck during a tennis class and she saw me a few hours later. I would have been miserable all weekend! She texted me the next day to make sure I was feeling better. I have only the best things to say about Yue Ma and the benefits I have received since starting treatments with her.” For more information call 314-541-3502 or visit www.YueMamassageTherapy.com.

Who Should Be Having Annual THermAl ImAgIng? by Linda Weber Spradling, CCT, CHt

D

igital infrared thermal imaging (DITI) is a totally non-invasive procedure for detecting and monitoring a number of diseases by showing the thermal abnormalities present in the body. X-Ray, C.T. Ultrasound and M.R.I. are all tests of anatomy that measure the structures of your body….”DITI” is unique in its capability to show physiological change and metabolic processes. It is the only method available for “visualizing” pain. Anyone can benefit from the information available through this procedure. Monitoring the inflammation in your body gives you the opportunity to be aware of developing conditions usually well before any symptoms show up and often before the problem is developed enough to show up on traditional testing. The earlier a problem is detected, the easier it is to correct. Thermography is a test of cellular physiology (function). Thermography offers a unique opportunity to “see” inflammation, vascular activity and lymphatic activity in the body. Most doctors now agree that all disease begins as inflammation. An inflammatory process begins and an error in metabolism (conversion of nutrients into energy) and growth is the result. Functional breakdown occurs long before there is a structural defect. A full body or upper body scan can be used for many years to

come as a basis from which to assess overall health and to monitor specific areas of the body or specific protocols. Thermography is especially appropriate as a breast health screening tool for women between the ages of 30 and 50 whose denser breast tissue makes it more difficult for mammography to pick up suspicious lesions. Women with implants can monitor the position and look for evidence of leakage. DITI detects the subtle physiologic changes that accompany breast pathology, whether it is cancer, fibrocystic disease, an infection, hormone imbalance or a vascular disease. Thermography is not a replacement for mammography. These tests have different roles. Thermography shows cell function while mammography shows structure. Mammography, or another “structure” test, is necessary to pinpoint the exact location of an existing tumor for biopsy. Research has shown that early detection is key in successfully treating cancer. Thermography can provide the first signal that a problem is developing. It is designed to be used in addition to regular breast care including monthly self exams and yearly doctor exams. You will likely need to consult a doctor in preventive or holistic health to help you address any information within your report. DESTINATIONS: Grand Pacific Palisades, Torrey Pines, Aviara & Much More!

San Diego, Carlsbad, La Jolla Area Is Great “Green” Adventure Story & Photos by J.B. Lester Healthy Planet Editor/Publisher

rom the beautifully landscaped patio area of the Grand Pacific Palisades Resort, we looked out over the Pacific Ocean into the warm late afternoon sun. Boats moved slowly across the water in all directions while the spout of a whale migrating north up the coast glistened in the sunshine. A hawk swooped overhead searching for an early supper. On the hillside just below the resort, the famous 50-acre “Flower Fields” lay fallow after a season of colorful blooms. This trip to the Carlsbad, La Jolla, San Diego area of Southern California was a continuation in our search for Green Hotels and Resorts. On this trip, my brother and I were the guests of the Grand Pacific Palisades Resort, a property in the RCI holiday exchange group, a part of Wyndham Exchange & Rentals and the Wyndham Worldwide family of brands. The Grand Pacific Palisades Resort was recently honored by RCI with a 2013 Platinum Award for its environmentally-friendly business practices. “Going Green is not only the right thing to do, it’s fiscally responsible, and our guests expect us to be good stewards of the environment,” said David Brown, co-president, Grand Pacific Resorts. “Our terrific inhouse Going Green Squad is comprised of representatives from each of our 19 resorts. They are continually coming up with great ideas and action plans as we do our part to think and act green. These efforts improve our resorts’ bottom line, reduce our environmental impact, and satisfy our owners’ and guests’ expectations for environmentally conscious hospitality practices.” Grand Pacific Palisades Resort represents one of the best in a group of resorts that are “Going Green.” From employee green trainings and weekly beach clean ups, to offering public transportation and using environmentally-friendly green supplies, the resort is always increasing its eco-awareness and decreasing its carbon footprint. Guests can see these “green” signs for themselves with in-room recycling, linen/towel exchange programs and water-saving low flow toilets and showerheads. Grand Pacific Palisades Resort is set on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Carlsbad. For the kids, it is right next door to LEGOLAND© California. For the adults, the restaurant on site is Karl Strauss Brewery where a delicious meal is well complemented by a couple of their tasty craft beers. As a nice touch, the resort has a separate kids’ pool and an adult pool. There is also a golf course called The Crossings right next door for those who want to tee it up as we did. You have a choice of one of many deluxe rooms or villa suites at the Grand Pacific Palisades, many having ocean views. The resort is

Our approach to holistic health includes the entire body and the oral cavity is no exception. We are dedicated to serving our patients and promoting a level of health care that carefully evaluates and reviews the use of dental materials, dental procedures and also offers dietary and nutritional support for each and every individual that is seen in our office.

Did you know that examining the mouth can reveal the presence of illnesses or unstable conditions in other areas of the body? If you feel like you’ve just about exhausted all your options in your search for better health, have your mouth examined with a different approach in mind. Get motivated, get educated, and get ready to participate in a

health-oriented lifestyle that will provide dental alternatives and a nutritional foundation designed to help support your own body’s healing powers.

The focus of holistic dentistry is to consider the mouth as a part of the whole body. We use materials and methods that are more compatible biologically with the body instead of the traditional dental materials. Examples of non-compatible materials are mercury fillings, non-precious heavy metal crowns, bridges and partials or dentures. Alternatives to fluoride are used

for the prevention of cavities. Proper alignment of the jaws and teeth are the foundation of how the body perceives itself in space. The result of improper alignment can result in symptoms of headache, ears ringing, loss of hearing, pain in the head and neck and clenching or grinding of the teeth. Good nutrition is inseparable for good

health. If your diet consists of food and drink made with white flour, sugar and no fresh fruits and vegetables, your body is likely to be acidic with resultant more medical and dental problems. For your dental evaluation contact our office for an appointment by calling 636-4589090 or email at cherryhillsdds@yahoo.com.

December Green Time Shows Discuss Health Care in a Global Environment by Don Fitz It is possible to provide health care much more cheaply and with vastly smaller environmental effects than the US does. Cuba is rapidly becoming a model of how to accomplish this on an international level. While guaranteeing free health care to all of its citizens, Cuba sends brigades throughout the world to give medical assistance following disasters. Yet, it spends a fraction of what the US does on health care. And it has one of the lowest environmental footprints in the world. Green Time shows during December, 2013 feature discussions about Cuban, American and global medicine. All include portions of Salud! What Puts Cuba on the Map in the Quest for Global Health. The first show focuses on the poor African country of Gambia, which would never be able to afford the expensive US approach to sickness. Don Fitz explains the Cuban model of primary and preventive health care, which is within the budgets of poor countries and highly effective at reducing disease. Zaki Baruti of the Universal African Peoples Organization looks at health care challenges in countries like Gambia, which is implementing Cuban ideas. During the second show, Rebecca Fitz, a student at its Latin American School of Medicine, de-scribes Cuba’s history of sending doctors to dozens of countries before beginning its medical school in 1999. She explains Cuba’s “family doctor” system which focuses on the health of a neighborhood. For information about going to medical school in Cuba, google “Pastors for Peace.” Each year, thousands of young people leave poor countries to practice medicine in rich countries. This leaves people in their homeland without adequate care while there is a glut of doctors else-where. The third show features Zaki Baruti and Dr. Daniel Hellinger, of Webster University, discussing what that means for impoverished communities of Africa and Latin America. They look at the impact of Cuba’s sending doctors to poor countries in an attempt to reverse this brain drain. In 1998, Hurricane Mitch ravaged Honduras. In addition to having an inadequate health care system, Honduras suffered from many of its doctors not wanting to go into impoverished areas. So, the government turned to Cuba for help. On December 28, Dr. Daniel Hellinger and Zaki Baruti discuss how conditions to receive international loans can force poor countries to abandon programs to protect their environment and the health of their citizens. Green Time appears at noon on Saturdays in St. Louis on Channel 24-1 and at 8 pm on Mondays in St. Louis on Channel 24-2, Springfield on Channel 39, Joplin on Channel 36 and Marshfield on Channel 17. Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields: Studies, Tests and Results By Kathleen H. Christ, NCMBT, LMT

P

ulsed Electromagnetic Fields (PEMFs) have been used successfully and extensively on more than ten thousand people for over 60 years and for many conditions throughout the world. Though many therapies using PEMFs have been FDA-approved, most doctors and therapists in the US are unfamiliar with this type of treatment. Over 6,600 white papers and research are available from Russia, Asia and Europe on the effectiveness of treating many diseases with PEMFs. The National Institute of Health has made research a priority for fusing broken bones, wound healing, pain and tissue swelling, and treating depression. Since all energy is electromagnetic in nature, all atoms, chemicals and cells produce electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Nothing happens in the body without an electromagnetic exchange, and every body has its own signature bioelectromagnetic field. Active healthy cells are absolutely necessary to slow the aging process, to reduce the risk of cell dysfunction, and to recover from injuries or diseases. Using PEMFs regularly can rebalance and restore cellular activity, reduce chronic pain and inflammation, and reduce the effects of stress and platelet adhesion. PEMFs improve energy, circulation, blood and tissue oxygenation, sleep quality, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, the uptake of nutrients, cellular detoxification and the ability to regenerate cells. PEMFs will also balance and strengthen the immune system, stimulate RNA and DNA, accelerate bone and soft tissue repair, relax muscles, and increase range of motion. In June, 2013 we had the unique opportunity to test 5 patients with 15 minutes of PEMF here at the St. Louis Aquatic Healing Center. Live-blood viewing was done before and after each session. The common denominator in the blood of all 5 subjects before the sessions were undigested proteins and fats, yeast, plaque, inflammation, oxidative and adrenal stress, free radicals, and

one with uric acid. After only 15 minutes each, everyone showed a complete clearing of the undigested proteins and fats, yeast, plaque, inflammation and uric acid, plus at least a 20 percent decrease in free radicals and adrenal stress. The blood was showing 100 percent cellular integrity with the cells being so radiant and illuminated that the intensity of the computer screen had to be greatly reduced. We also found that the body used all the minerals and fluid available to complete this high electrical/magnetic internal cleanse. So, water and minerals need to be replaced immediately so as not to experience exhaustion. A very high concentration of heavy metals was seen in the colon, as the cells had plenty of energy to clean house and dump toxins. (That’s where you want it to be – on the way out). So, a healthy and active colon is a requirement for best outcome. Two and half days later, 2 of the subjects repeated their blood test, and all the changes were still holding. Quite remarkable with no other support involved or required , i.e. exercise, meds, herbs, oils, or flower essences, etc. The two groups of people who seem to benefit the most are those with chronic pain or sports injuries. Not only does PEMF provide amazing relief, but it actually repairs and heals the body. Pain is the cry of tissue for energy. Anything that contributes to a lower energy state in the cell – especially stress and injury – affects its ability to function to its fullest. In all living things, energy is more fundamental than chemistry. NASA scientists assayed all forms of electric and electro-magnetic devices alleged to restore tissues after injury and found nano-second PEMFs up to 4 times better than any other device. Pulsed Magnetic Cellular Exercise – exercising cells from the inside out – produces results never before seen. See www.pemfinfo.com for over 6,000 studies on numerous conditions. We want to welcome you to the world of PEMF: Pulsed Electromagnetic Field. PEMF is widely used in Europe and other parts of Russia and Asia, where it has been a standard therapy. While this is a new technology in North America, it is really an innovative, emerging technology with extensive research and useage behind it. The MG-PRO is a generator that produces a DC (direct current) pulsed electromagnetic field of varying strengths delivered via insulated cables. No current of any kind comes into contact with the body. The magnetic field energy produced at the cable passes freely through living tissue for the purpose of cellular exercise to promote and support a sense of well being.

Studies of PEMF include astounding results with: Anxiety Disorders Athletic Performance AutoImmune Back Pain Bone/Osteo Burns Cancer Depression Epilepsy

Fibromyalgia Hormones Injury Recovery Intelligence Melatonin Migraine Multiple Sclerosis Neural Regeneration Neurological

Osteo Arthritis Osteoporosis PAIN Parkinson’s Rheumatoid Arthritis Sleep Stroke Vascular Vision
