February: A Test Of Patience

F

ebruary is a month of “patience” for me. And perhaps for everyone else as well. Winter lingers on in St. Louis and everything is usually frozen in time. February is the caboose of winter. And like a motorist waiting at the crossing, we count the cars and wonder how long until we come to the end of this train. (Of course I do realize that they retired cabooses some year ago, but cut me some slack, I am using a metaphor here.) You get the point, winter is not my friend. The bards like to use winter and the month of February as a time of reflection, love and romance. I get it. There are no flowers blooming to write about and few too many birds seeking mates. The little sparrow I watched yesterday with my cat Silva, was perched on the blade of the ceiling fan under the roof of our deck fluffing up his feathers so much to keep warm that he looked like a blowfish. My wife Niki said she saw a raccoon come out of the sewer at 8 am in the morning and just wander around in circles, quite disoriented from the freezing temperatures. The squirrels on our front porch keep coming out to see what happened to the pumpkins I had left over from Halloween. They like to eat holes in them to get to the tasty pumpkin seeds. But those have long gone to the compost pile. They froze and then thawed (one warm day) and then slowly melted like a Salvador Dali painting. Even our Wiener Lab Shayla has a hard time digging holes in the

frozen tundra. January has been tough. And now February will be a test of patience. We will get a few warm days (you know the balmy 40s). The snow will melt and then everything will turn to mud and then it will freeze a time or two again. It’s the passage of the seasons in old St. Lou. OMG I started to channel a poet. And miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep. Help, I am caught in verse. What the heck else is there to do in February. Even the groundhog is pulled out of his hole to look around for a shadow. And let me get this straight, if he sees his shadow it mean 6 more weeks of winter? So if it’s a nice day on Feb. 2, it is a bad omen? And if it is cloudy and nasty, then we are in for an early Spring? Wow, someone must have been refuting global warming when they came up with that one. Oh, yea, the dip in the Arctic Vortex has nothing to do with climate change. Oh, forget it, I am too cold to argue. But we do have Valentines Day to fall back on in February. The day of love. I do like the concept. Love can make you feel wonderful, crazy, insane, intense, euphoric, tremendous, depressed, anxious, ... it’s the rollercoaster of emotions. But without it, we would not have poets, country music, valentine cards, those little candies with sayings on them like “Smooch”, “Love You” and “Ouch”. Someone once said Valentine’s Day was created by Hallmark, but that is just too cynical. Everyone knows it was Brachs. Did you know that Susan Brach married William Hallmark in the early 1800s and an empire was created. That’s a lie, Bazinga! These are the kind of columns you get from me when my creative juices become ice pops. My monkey ears get frostbite. My glasses fog up every time I enter the house. I even was taking pictures of frost formed on the window pane. Now that was cool! But I am counting the train cars. Waiting for the first crocus to peek ... before my patience runs out of anti-freeze! Thawingly, J.B. Lester; Publisher On The Cover: Heart Watercolor Quilt by Niki Lester

Do You Have A Heart-Wall? by Dorothy Tomasic, M.A. Certified Emotion Code and EPT Works Practitioner

D

id you know that your heart beats 100,000 times every day? That’s more than 36 million times in a year! Daily your mighty heart sends 2,000 gallons of blood flowing through a network of 60,000 miles of blood vessels that feed your organs and tissues. We now know that the heart’s function is for more than pumping blood. The heart is also an emotional organ and can be thought of as the center of your being – many cultures consider the heart the seat of the soul, where love and creativity reside. Cardiologists are studying the effects that emotion has on the heart. In a recent study, it was found that arteries responded favorably by dilating when people laughed and constricting when people viewed violent images. I like the idea of laughing being good for our heart – but we already knew this intuitively, didn’t we? That we feel at ease when we laugh, feel joy, and receive or give love. And we feel stress when angry, resentful or sad. The Institute of Heart Math, a research center dedicated to the study of the heart and the physiology of emotions, has conducted numerous studies identifying the relationship between emotions and the heart. A number of

their studies have provided new insight into understanding how the activity of the heart is linked to our emotions and our health, vitality and well-being. Have you ever been wounded emotionally? Or because of an emotional situation, felt that your heart was aching or even breaking? Dr. Bradley Nelson, developer of the Emotion Code healing technique, believes that when people experience a deep sense of grief, hurt or loss more than a couple of times in their life, that their subconscious mind will form an “energy wall” to protect their heart against further heartache and emotional wounding. He refers to this wall of energy as the “Heart-Wall”. According to Dr. Nelson, the Heart-Wall blocks us from fully opening our hearts to others. Initially, the Heart-Wall served as protection, but later in life can, if not removed, contribute to you having a harder time being able to give and receive love freely. When the energetic HeartWall is removed from the body, the difference can sometimes be felt immediately, but in most cases the change is more subtle and occurs over time. Clients often report that their hearts feel lighter once the last trapped emotion is removed from their Heart-Wall! LeArN To MediTATe For BeTTer HeALTH Primordial Sound Meditation A Program developed By deepak Chopra, M.d.

Dr. Deepak Chopra, best selling author and leader in the holistic health field, has revived Primordial Sound Meditation. This ancient form of meditation uses mantras, or Primordial Sounds, which are selected for each individual. This simple mantra technique, which is practiced twice daily, allows our awareness to go beyond the activity of our mind to the stillness of our spirit. This process allows our bodies to gain the deep rest necessary to release stress and fatigue. The result can be improved health, more satisfying relationships, increased creativity, and renewed enthusiasm for life. Primordial Sound Meditation can be learned by people of any age, culture, and educational background. It is recommended for anyone who wishes to enjoy greater peace, freedom and fulfillment. About the Instructor, Shirley Stoll, B.S., M.A. - Shirley has been involved with meditation since 1995 and is certified by Dr. Deepak Chopra as a Primordial Sound Meditation Instructor and affiliated with the Chopra Center in Carlsbad, California. As a former teacher, she combines her love for teaching with her commitment to meditation.

“Tell YourHormones Hormonesto to Melt Melt Your Your Excess “Tell Your ExcessBelly BellyFat” Fat” B

By Raj Banerjee, DC Dr. Banerjee’s Wellness Centre 314-282-3990 LoseBellyFatStL.com

“Where permanent, healthy weight loss is finally within your D

Dear Seeker of Health & Fitness, Be honest with yourself. Do you like what you see when you look in the mirror—especially a full-length mirror? Do you want to turn back the hands of time? Has your quality of life been diminishing a little bit here and a little bit there because your appearance, health, energy, and resilience are slowly slipping from your grasp? And do you feel stymied because you don’t quite know what steps to take next, even though you’re battered on every side by lifestyle advice from family, friends, and countless “authorities”? More diets, more fads, more opinions? At the heart of it all, you don’t like what is physically happening to you. And you’re not stupid. But intelligence has little to do with it. The all-too-human truth is this: Most people in your shoes continue to react in ways that harm themselves over time! Why is that? Because the emotional distress that comes with body distortion and premature aging begs for relief, NOW! The desire for quick relief simply overwhelms rational thinking about possible long-term damage and failure. Let’s face it: for many overweight people, this is a desperate struggle. You may even be one of those desperate strugglers, running from diet to diet, and gym to gym, but with little to show for it.

For such desperation, anything that seems to offer a quick, easy answer to weight loss or other health and fitness problems is a straw worth grasping for. But that’s precisely the problem. Everywhere you look, people are offering you only straws to grasp, straws that come with great promises of quick, easy solutions (but their disclaimers about “atypical” results tell the truth). Somehow the promises just don’t pan out because straws, no matter what shiny, new packages they are wrapped in, are still straws! Each new weight-loss fad brings new hope, but hope is not a stable course of action! Working with scientific facts and principles is. You see, re-education is your missing link to a more youthful appearance, higher level of wellness, and greater quality of life. Re-education is how you create success with permanent weight loss. As a preview, here’s what you’ll need to know about permanent weight loss to finally succeed (I’ll fill you in with details of the 3 top secrets of permanent weight loss at my free Stress Hormone & Belly Fat Seminar). For success, you simply must understand how fat is burned and health is created: • Overweight is not a disease. It’s a symptom of diminished health. If you can’t lose weight and keep it off, it’s because there’s something wrong with your health, which includes hormonal imbalances. So if you want to lose weight permanently, you must start getting healthy. Sorry, there’s no way around this. • Eating fat does not make you fat. It’s the inability to burn fat that makes you fat. You must enlist the right hormones to burn fat and reverse your signs of aging. This is where your quality of life comes from. • For most people with stubborn weight, the very last thing they should be doing is cutting calories because it doesn’t work. IT DOESN’T WORK! By the way, did I say IT DOESN’T WORK?

• Yes, many people are successfully losing weight on modern weight-loss programs, but they are NOT losing weight PERMANENTLY— and seldom healthfully. • If you have a stubborn weight problem, “moderation in all things” will not work for you until you get healthy. • The weight loss approach that’s best for you depends o your body type (which points directly to your hormona imbalances). Do you know what your body type is?

LOVE IS always READY & WAITING by Christine Kniffen, LCSW, Therapist & Relationship Coach

S

o, what is love? This is a topic that does not suffer a lack of opinions as to how to define it. It is perhaps one of the most written about, talked about topics we know. Culture is filled with endless platitudes exposing plenty of silly nonsense. Take for example the one that says, “Love is never having to say you are sorry”. Wow, what a load of you know what. Nothing could be further from the truth. Love is absolutely about knowing how to say you are sorry. Love has everything to do with being able to transcend oneself, ego and all, and learn how to become better at empathizing with another. It has everything to do with being able to take ownership of how your words and behaviors affect those around you. Love is like a great big bag of Miracle Grow. It provides an incredible catalyst for growth. When you have the right compatibility matchup two people can soar towards the heavens, higher and higher, leaving behind the “me” attitude and instead learning how to begin paying attention to the greater world at large. Pain keeps people stuck in a terrible loop, endlessly and narrowly focused on themselves, unable to grow. Love moves us forward towards our real purpose. In the context of love, we learn to free ourselves from the fears and anxieties that keep us stuck in tunnel vision. Through love we begin to think about our place in the larger context of the world and we begin to ponder how we might make a positive contribution throughout our lives. Love isn’t just about what we get, love is all about learning to give. Our entire nature is all about love. When we deny this to ourselves, often by not insisting upon more or else leaving when relationships aren’t working, we deny the world our greatest gift. This is the gift of us. Deepak Chopra once said, “…..you will discover that there is only one beauty, and you are that.” Each person has a unique offering to make to society and the world at large. This is one of the greatest lessons you can teach your children. The message that they are capable,

important, valued and especially, that they have something significant to contribute. This supercharges a child’s self-confidence, allowing them to then make smart relationship choices, thereby continuing to pass this fantastic characteristic forward for benefit of both the people and the planet. Oh no, time for a silly little platitude. How about the one that says, “Love conquers all”. It does, if collectively used for the greater good. But, love is never enough in and of itself for a fantastic relationship. One needs a pleasant atmosphere of cooperation, compromise and participation with which to work out the differences. Equally important, we need to be linked with a partner that makes it safe to face and finally rid oneself of the past hurts, hence lies, that we tell ourselves as to our deservedness in life and love. Love and compassion go hand and hand. According to the Dalai Lama, ‘…genuine compassion is based on the rationale that all human beings have an innate desire to be happy and overcome suffering, just like me”. This understood commonality allows us to feel more connected to others, thus capable of compassion even towards someone we don’t like. Additionally, I heard the other day that research indicates our DNA is 99.9% similar to that of an earthworm. We are all so very much more similar than we realize. Wouldn’t it be great if we all just paused occasionally to let that sink in just a bit? Love opens the door to learning how to acquire dignity and respect for all creatures, great and small. It provides an opportunity for multiplied unity and power to lift those from oppression, poverty and the likes. This is the aspiration of love. This is the great, hopeful potential of love. If you are having any trouble letting love in, then it is time to fight back and do something about it. Stop wasting time and get your gift out to the world. Break down those walls, re-arrange your perspectives on love and relationships and get out there and get some. Love is always ready & waiting. Are you going to come aboard? Life Lesson:

Basic Human Interaction 101 by Kris Ash

T

his past Thanksgiving was probably the happiest I have ever experienced. Like so many of us, family events can be stressful and difficult at best, and serenity is rarely the norm at these huge gatherings. So, after spending a surprisingly harmonious afternoon with my loved ones, I then spent days afterward in reflective and dissection hoping to uncover the mystery behind its joyous success. (After all, if I could experience one happy holiday, surely I could recreate more of these harmonious future events!) The truth really wasn’t that hard to figure out. My brother had pretty much summed it all up during one of our more intimate conversations when he shared some stories he’d been told by a patient of his. But, it was in understanding my role in the power behind these stories that reminded me, yet again, that despite the complexity of human behavior, relationship dynamics, and our consistent biological programming which has us perpetually looking for problems (often catapulting our minds into worry, fear, and negativity), that I came to succinctly focus on the simple outline for joy which I’d experienced. It’s true that there is no one precise handbook for human interaction, but if we can keep just 3 small core points in mind, we can master

the realm of harmony in any given moment. Point 1 – Gandhi said it best, “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. Change starts and ends with us because we only have control over ourselves. Thus, that is where we should focus our energies for change. Point 2 – “Peace begins when expectations end.” (Buddhist proverb.) If we consistently put the power of our happiness in the hands of others, we will almost always be disappointed. Again, we must look inside to manifest true contentment. Point 3 – It all takes practice. To change our behaviors (points 1 and 2), we need to remember that we are the co-creators of our lives. Therefore, we must remain focused, tenacious, and patient. Then, it will come. It isn’t always easy keeping our thoughts on course. It helps to have supportive people, reliable resources, and effective tools at our disposal so that we can stay ever vigilant towards this end. A word stone is a tool I’ve found that can serve as a focusing reminder. I carry Gandhi’s words with me in my pocket. And, when I find myself giving my power away, I reach in and touch this reminder of where my true power lies, in my soul as a cocreator in my life. Kris Ash owns of KARMA~NATURALS, 126 S. How Do You Know Your Heart Is Celtic? by Kimberly Schneider, M.Ed., J.D., LPC

V

alentine’s Day! In my house, along with expressions of affection for our loved ones, Feb. 14th also means we’ve just celebrated Imbolc, and St. Patrick’s Day is coming. You may not have known that February 1st marks the beginning of spring (Imbolc) in the Celtic calendar and perhaps you don’t yearn to head to an Irish pub for trad. music when March 17th arrives. But even if that’s true, and even if you don’t have a drop of Irish, Scottish or Welsh blood, you might have a Celtic heart. How do you know your heart is Celtic? Here are a few clues: You are capable of wonder. You encounter the sacred in the rituals of everyday life. You’re connected to people who’ve passed on. Beauty can move you to tears.

The sky, the sea, the animals and the trees sometimes speak to you. You know that words have power. Your soul is hungry for LIFE. You believe anything is possible (or at least, you want to believe it). If any of these statements describe you (or you wish that they did), you might want to explore the spirituality of the Celts. Celtic tribes made their way across a huge expanse of Eurasia at different points in history. “The Celts,” as we now call them, were not one distinct people, but many different groups loosely connected through shared traditions and perspectives. And we can’t state with certainty what spirituality meant to the Celts, since their sacred teachings were not recorded in writing. Only clues remain. In mythology and archaeology, and in the stories, music, poems and traditions still found in rural Ireland, we can catch glimpses of who they were, and what they believed.

Getting Rolfed and How We Walk by Sally and Alan Cina

I

'm sure we all know the benefits of walking, it is a fantastic exercise. If you do a search on the internet you'll find more information about the benefits than I can write about here. Lets take a moment and examine from Dr. Rolf's view how we walk. Here again the articles talk about brisk to moderate. I'm talking about another kind of how. With Dr. Rolf's work we are interested in how the legs move. Where does it happen from, the knee, hip, ankle? Is the alignment of the legs straight and supporting the body or are the knees coming together while the feet are wide apart? Are the knees looking forward like the headlights on a car? Do the feet point forward or are they going out to the sides? The wear patterns on your shoes tell a story about how and where your weight is on your feet. So not only is this a wonderful thing for walking, how about going up or down stairs? That's right, the same patterns happen here. In fact, stairs can show the patterns much sooner than just regular walking. So what do we do? We have a hands-on method to assist you in changing your patterns and creating an awareness of these new patterns to change out the old ones. As your patterns change it is easier to walk and do so for longer periods of time. Walking is meant to be effortless and a joy.

Our work has more to offer than just teaching you to walk. Something many of us were not taught. We figured it out by imitated our parents or others who were or are influential in our lives when we were young. SO what else to talk about… re-patterning the whole body; finding alignment in gravity; ease of movement. To learn more about us and what we do checkout our website RolfSTL.com and Follow us on Facebook @ Cina Structural Integration to get updates about walking and more. Alan & Sally have been serving the St Louis Community for many years. We also do 4-handed sessions, which offer greater integration and are exponentially more effective. Call, text or email to schedule your appointment today! Alan@RolfSTL.com 314-771-8730. Sally@RolfSTL.com 314-489-3064. Rolfstl.com

But we don’t need, nor should we try, to replicate history. The problems and opportunities of today’s world require more of us than imitations. They ask us to be here, now. Present and aware, with our sense of wonder reawakened to hear the whisperings of the Divine. Open to possibilities. Receptive to the song on the wind, the message in the sky, the wisdom of our ancestors inspiring our modern Celtic hearts. Have a Celtic heart then, have you? If you do, I hope you’ll join us for a Celtic Spirituality in July, Retreat in Ireland www.KimberlySchneider.com/trips, and/or the Celtic Soul Experience I’m facilitating with Irish singing/songwriting brothers Owen and Moley O’Suilleabhain in St. Louis March 8th! http://togetherinfaithseries.com/

Kimberly Schneider, M.Ed., J.D., LPC has studied, taught and written about Celtic spirituality for decades. She facilitates classes, retreats and ceremonies at sacred spaces in the U.S. and Ireland, helping modern seekers find fresh relevance in the wisdom of the ancient Celts. The author of Everything You Need Is Right Here: Five Steps to Manifesting Magic and Miracles and the spoken word CD Terrible Beauty: Poetry and Reflections for Precarious Times, Kimberly teaches Communication at Washington University and is a regular contributor to Great Day St. Louis television show. CanCer is Your Messenger: Early Warning Signs of Cancer By Simon Yu, MD

R

ecently I got a telephone message for a complaint from my patient’s friend. Apparently, I missed the diagnosis of cancer with advanced stage IV abdominal lymphoma for her elderly dear friend. She left the message that the patient is not coming back to see me anymore since I missed the diagnosis of cancer. The message was somewhat accusatory and said I did not touch the patient nor did I palpate looking for cancer during her physical examination. The patient is scheduled to go through chemotherapy. I was not automatically thinking malpractice but the message was rather unpleasant, more of an accusation. I reviewed her chart to see if I overlooked any clues for the missing diagnosis of lymphoma. I saw her for the first time 3 years ago, with the chief complaints of no energy, forgetfulness with poor memory, and no stamina. She had a history of thyroid problems, depression, and, osteopenia and neck pain. She had been getting physical therapy and chiropractic adjustments. Her physical examination was unremarkable with no palpable lymph nodes. I noticed she had extensive dental work done. Her acupuncture meridian assessment indicated that her biggest problem seemed to originate from dental related problems. Dental X-ray showed five root canals. I told her that her medical conditions might be related to her hidden dental problems and referred her to a biological dentist. She also had very high mercury and lead levels indicated by provocation testing. Therefore, I put her on oral chelation therapy. She had her dental work done and I saw her on a few occasions since. The last time I saw her was about a year ago. My examination indicated that she still needed more dental work to be done even though she already had gone through extensive dental work. This is rather common. It is also one of the most difficult situations I see, where the patient has spent a great deal of money to get dental work done, only to be told that the dental work is not complete and requires more dental treatment. At that stage, the patient can be angry, with me and the dentist, skeptical, and accusatory that I am in cahoots with the dentist. Detecting hidden dental problems has been the most daunting task I see as a physician. It is also often the most expensive part of the holistic medical care. I’ve written many articles on dental related medical problems including case studies. This case is no exception. Most adult cancer patients have multiple risk factors with a long list of potential causative factors for the development of cancer. Hidden dental problems, such as root canals, dental implants, mercury amalgams, and cavitations (jaw bone infections) have often been overlooked as if dental and medical problems are not related as origins of illness. Cancer doesn’t happen overnight. So, what are the early warning signs and symptoms for cancer? Often, there are no warning signs at all. Or it could simply be that an unsuspected, or undiscovered, dental problem, or a myriad of other problems, is the connection to cancer. Here are common early warning signs and symptoms for cancer that should not be overlooked if the symptoms are persistent. • Chronic indigestion • a sore that does not heal within a few weeks • a change in bowel or bladder habits • Persistent hoarseness or a cough • Difficulty in swallowing • unexplainable weight loss and fatigue • subtle changes in behavior, headaches, and neurological symptoms • a change in size, color, or discharge in skin or organ systems • a lump that does not go away Most of these early signs are subtle and insidious. We often overlook them for many years as just a nuisance or inconvenience while we look for a quick treatment to relieve the symptoms like indigestion with anti-acid medications. If you need prolonged anti-acid medications, you are blocking the necessary acid production in the stomach that is critical for the breakdown of ingested food into protein, fat, and carbohydrates, as well as for killing bacteria and parasites. TV commercials are saturated with selling antiacid medications with sleek, misleading information when often taking apple cider vinegar or digestive enzymes might be sufficient for the most common indigestion and

acid reflux like symptoms. It may take many years for the development of cancer as a palpable mass during physical examination. However, it may seem like the whole process happened overnight when, all of a sudden, you are able to, one day, palpate the lump or an Xray or CT scan shows a tumor in your body. I wish I could tell my patient that “I am sorry I missed the diagnosis for cancer” and recommend re-evaluating her situation but it was too late. She decided for chemotherapy. The good news is that many lymphoma patients do relatively well with chemotherapy however we still haven’t uncovered her potential causative factors for cancer. She may still have an unresolved dental infection that might be one of the triggering factors for the inflammation and development of lymphoma. Don’t be frightened by a diagnosis of cancer. Don’t panic if you have some of the early warning signs. It does not mean you have cancer. Cancer diagnosis is not a death sentence. Cancer is your messenger. It is the last messenger telling you to listen to your body and listen to your inner voice. Cancer is a wakeup call to change your life. A cancer diagnosis gives you the opportunity to re-examine your life value system. You can embrace the messenger with utmost gratitude as a turning point of your life. Collagen Anti-Aging Red Light Therapy by Kathleen H. Christ, LMT, NCMBT

B

reakthrough treatments in Red Light therapy were discovered and researched by NASA, Mayo Clinic, National Institutes of Health, and the US Military. Red Light Therapy is a safe, all-natural process that encourages the body to naturally produce enzymes, elastin fibers and collagen that support the skin’s structure. Numerous benefits are continually unfolding the more and the longer this therapy is being used. First, the most obvious is skin rejuvenation, especially on the face: wrinkles and fine lines disappear, as well as blemishes and redness, age spots, freckles, and hyper-pigmentation; it also minimizes the size of facial pores and melts acne scars. Second, Red Light therapy for pain relief is a gentle, non-invasive, drug-free and a chemicalfree alternative that has been shown to reduce and in some cases eliminate aches and pains. This deep penetrating light is effective for herniated and bulging discs; muscle related back pain, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, muscle spasms, joint pain, inflammation, nerve and sports injuries, neck pain and stiffness, and wounds. Red Light Therapy is also effective at repairing damaged skin, treating depression, killing bacteria,

melting stretch marks and aiding in cancer recovery. Third, over time, improved oxygenation and detoxification of the skin is achieved as the vascular walls of the skin’s small blood vessels are strengthened, while it also regenerates and stimulates fibroblast cells which create collagen and elastin synthesis, followed by improved natural repair and the creation of healthy skin. Red Light therapy is excellent for treatments of Psoriasis and Eczema and increases circulation throughout the entire body. Red Light Therapy helps damaged skin to heal 200% faster than without intervention. Fourth, Red Light therapy is absorbed by the mitochondria of cells and stimulates intracellular energy transfer (ATP) for enhanced cellular vitality and permeability and improved oxygenation. The treatments are restful and comforting, and one notices more energy, a sense of wellbeing, and more youthful, smooth and glowing skin. It truly is a lovely antiaging device and a treatment for anyone of any age. Please call the St. Louis Aquatic Healing Center in Creve Coeur for an appointment or more information: 314-432-5228. We use several light treatment methods, including a Red Light Therapy Bed with the usual session being 20 minutes each.

The treatments are restful and comforting, and one notices more energy, a sense of well-being, and more youthful, smooth and glowing skin.

Collagen Anti-Aging

Red Light Therapy

Photo Rejuvenation or Red Light Therapy

is the use of light to create an anti-aging effect on the skin and is quickly becoming recognized as one of the safest, fastest and most affordable ways to achieve younger, more vibrant looking skin. Physicians and aestheticians agree, it is the most powerful and effective way to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the skin. Visible red (620nm-700nm) light shows at least 24 different positive changes at a cellular level. Red light penetrates into the derma layer of the skin, energizing the cells, thereby helping to create collagen, which helps to plump up the skin, and elastin, which helps to firm the skin and diminish fine lines and wrinkles.

Red Light Therapy Benefits: • Restores skin cells • Reduces fine lines, scars, acne, wrinkles, stretch marks and age spots • Stimulates collagen synthesis • Smooths and reduces cellulite deposits

• Treats seasonal affective disorders • Increases moisture retention • Increases blood circulation • Increases lymphatic system activity • Decreases skin flaws like Psoriasis, Eczema and Rosacea

PAIN RELIEF: • Herniated and Bulging Discs • Osteoarthritis • Fibromyalgia • Joint and Muscle pain • Inflammation • Nerve and Sports injuries • Neck pain and stiffness • Wounds and damaged skin • Kills bacteria

Don’t Let Your Testosterone Get You Down by Rosa Kincaid, M.D.

M

any of us are aware of the change that women may go through as they approach their late forties and fifties. These changes usually involve fatigue, low libido loss of muscle mass and, let’s not forget, hot flashes. Many are not aware that men also go through a change. For a man it can mean: increase in belly fat, decline in sexual and athletic performance, and onset of grumpiness or depression. Many men describe it as “not feeling like themselves.” While it is often shrugged off as just being a normal part of aging, many men are continuing to build strong muscle and maintain sexual prowess into their 80’s and beyond! It is not normal to start breaking down in your 40’s, 50’s or sixties. Your state of being at that age is due to: your diet, exercise activity, stress management (cortisol levels), and of course, the probability of having a low “T” level. The “T” stands for testosterone. While most people think of sexual activity when they hear this word, men have testosterone receptors on their brain, heart, muscles as well as sexual organs. It’s no wonder testosterone is so important to a man’s total well-being. Many men and women are suffering due to hormone imbal-

ances and just agreeing with the idea that your happy days are over when someone convinces you that you are “over the hill.” And, it seems that people go “over the hill” at different ages and with different causes. Some men feel old at 45. Some are still going strong at much older ages. Before you’ve decided to throw in the towel, I would like to inform you that this is a condition that can be quantified and fixed in a natural way. The inability to lose the belly fat and maintain the muscle mass could be due to a hormone imbalance. But if looking better, feeling sexy and performing better are not enough, be assured that well-documented studies have also shown a decreased risk for diabetes, prostate cancer and premature death in those men who have normal testosterone levels. So, don’t let low testosterone get you down, or let IT go down. Come get tested and balanced today. You have your whole life ahead of you.

L

ocally-owned nadoz Bakery + Cafe serves fresh, healthy and imaginative fast, casual food. Conveniently located at The Boulevard across from The Galleria next to Crate and Barrel, it was easy to park in the attached garage and has a welcoming, modern European atmosphere. Unique to nadoz, they offer a raw juice bar, which is a concept still fairly new to St. Louis, and offers all fresh fruits and seasonal vegetables juiced and made to order. I watched as the fresh ingredients were inserted whole into the juicer and the natural juice full of vitamins and goodness poured out. The balance of the fruit and vegetables complemented each other and I would not have guessed that I was drinking vegetables. This tasty disguise allows you to try different fruit and vegetable combinations than you may not normally eat, which will then fill you with a variety of different vitamins. Juicing helps your digestive system rest so that you can absorb a greater amount of nutrients from the vegetables, and allows you to consume the benefits of vegetables in a delicious way. nadoz has 8 different raw juice choices on their daily menu plus a special juice of the month. Their top seller is the “Mean Green” which combines kale, celery, apple and parsley. February’s juice of the month, called “beating heart-beet,” is red in honor of Valentine’s Day and contains – you guessed it! - fresh beets. Add some whey protein for that extra protein boost. Ffresh R E S H fare FARE Healthy Snacking 101 by Kari Hartel, RD, LD Program Coordinator, Cooking Matters, Operation Food Search

A

mericans are now more overweight than ever, and the current obesity epidemic is often attributed to oversized portions. However, while huge portion sizes have likely contributed to this growing public health issue, experts in the field would argue that constant snacking is often to blame for Americans’ expanding waistlines. Couple that with the fact that most of us aren’t getting enough physical activity each day and it’s easy to see why obesity is still plaguing our nation. Research has found that over the past three decades the average portion size increased by about 12%, but the real contributor to extra calories isn’t how much we’re eating, but how often. Research discovered that we’re eating 29% more often—from 3.8 meals and snacks per day to 4.9 per day. We’re constantly exposed to food everywhere we go and marketing has cleverly made us think we need to be snacking all day long. However, Americans’ love for snacking doesn’t have to mean we’re all doomed to gain weight. In fact, snacking can be a healthy practice if done in the right way. Try to be cognizant of what you eat, how often you eat and how much you eat. Here are some healthy snacking tips: Determine whether or not you’re truly hungry or if you’re just reaching for a snack because you’re bored, tired, frustrated or experiencing another cue for emotional eating. Avoid “mindless munching where you’re snacking while tackling other tasks and not realizing

how much you’re really eating. While at work, keep unhealthy snacks away from your desk and out of your view so you don’t end up going through an entire bag of chips or bowl of candy while working at your desk. Keep a stash of healthy, low-calorie snacks easy visible. Have washed, cut-up fresh fruit and vegetables in zip-top bags in the front of your fridge at home or the office. Having quick, easy access to healthy snacks will increase the likelihood that you’ll choose those foods over other unhealthy snack staples, such as chips, candy and other high-calorie foods. Always try to include a fruit or vegetable in your snack choice and select normal portion sizes (a serving of fruit: a piece about the size of a tennis ball). Keep snacks to 100-150 calories or less. Oftentimes your “snack is really more like a meal in terms of the amount of calories it contains. Try to aim for three well-balanced meals a day and one snack, perhaps two if you are exercising vigorously. If you’re feeling low on energy and that afternoon slump has you feeling tempted to reach for a high-calorie snack fix, go for a brisk 15-30 minute walk instead. Walking will invigorate you and leave you feeling ready to take on the rest of your day. The protein scramble is served in a small cast iron skillet and is very appealing not only to the eye but also to the palate. The egg whites in the dish keep it light, yet it is also very satisfying. The bread was hearty and full of seeds. Also noteworthy is their house made flax seed muffin and I look forward to trying the house made granola. I must admit, just about everything on the menu looked good to me and I delighted in planning my order upon my return. I

Popularizing Population Viewpoints

E

nvironmental topics, my stock-intrade, have thankfully become a real part of our societal dialogue. We encounter Green stuff not only in the news, but also all over popular culture: celebrity sightings, product design, comedy skits, advertising; woven into the fabric of how-was-your-day. Topics that were geek domain less than a decade ago now color everyday conversations. We’re talking about climate extremes, plastics in our water supply, growing healthy-eating justice in urban food deserts, human population, and . . . ERGGHHH! Stop the presses! Do-over! Rewind! Population? Who’s going to tell us what we can and can’t do about our own (burgeoning) numbers? I personally don’t want government, religion, or business messing in my personal choices. That goes for environmental types too! But I do want – and have wanted, in my reproductive years – good information to help me make sound choices, and the opportunities to make them. For myself, my society, and for the planet I live on. Would you want the same for yourself? For your daughters? Good reasons to broaden our Green horizons to engage with population issues too. The Population Institute, a globally active nonprofit based in Washington DC, works to build public and policy-maker awareness of the social, economic and environmental consequences of rapid population growth. I’ve talked to PI folks in radio interviews. These were some zippy on-air chats. Reporting on developing-world production of soap operas we heard how plot lines and characters dramatized locally flavored street smarts on population themes – and how local data is documenting beneficial changes in viewing-public behavior. I helped promote “World Vasectomy Day,” an effort (started by one guy) to recruit hundreds of doctors and thousands of men to help limit reproduction with a voluntary SNIP. A counter in the PI homepage corner tells me the size of one whopping species (us) needing to share all of Earth’s resources with me (I get less than a 7.2 billionth share) and how many more of my kind have arrived since I logged onto www.populationinstitute.org (about 6,000 humans while I wrote this page). Every one of these individuals needs – and some would claim deserves - water, food, shelter, love and ways to fulfill each one’s destiny. And these numbers and needs of course do not cover caring for all the rest of the kinds of our relatives in (sing it with me, please) The Circle of Life.

Look under the rocks of enviro-problems and you’ll usually find a human-population cause. People use plastic stuff that degrades, contaminates soil and water, and chokes or poisons other species. People consume electric power that drives extraction and combustion of fossil fuels and concentrates atmospheric gases that drastically kink up climate patterns. People buy big-box stores full of “goods” that drain already-stressed family budgets and chain invisible “foreign” workers in sweatshops to keep prices low-low-low. All this and more times 7.2 billion (and counting) of our peeps adds up to ow-ow-ow. Enviro-wisdom also reveals another side to these situations, by understanding how solutions exist within even the most pressing problems: how people working, thinking and caring together can dream and cooperate sensible ways to meet a biodiverse population’s needs (not limited to but including ours), without totally trashing the Earth (that sustains us). Especially inspiring to me, being a female, is that educating women and girls is an internationally proven key to sustainable turnarounds of our overall economic, social and environmental messes. Not an instant solution for sure, but a process built on values to encourage and empower, not oppress and enslave, more than half of humankind. Working toward these ends, the Population Institute promotes international and U.S. support for voluntary family planning programs, to give women and girls the power to choose when to bear children. “Empowerment of women” covers legal, political, economic, and social equality, including sexual and reproductive rights. These are critical rights to achieve in a world where one human gender is still considered property of the other, an imbalanced injustice that leaves us playing with less than half a deck, and totally whacks the playing field for pretty much every other species. Including population in our popular talk – and integrating PI-type intelligence and skills into the enviro-education mix – will sustainably forge important links conveniently missing in our social thinking. Let’s pop the bubble of illusion about population topics, and change our climate of misinformation and ideological raving. Let’s sprout some population-savvy as we continue to Green up our popular culture. Jean Ponzi’s radio show “Earthworms” was honored last month with a Global Media Award from the Population Institute. resources. In addition, many homeowners install solar in a desire for energy independent and security. Extended power outages can be more than just inconvenient when families must relocate, due to the inability to use home medical devices and charge cell phones. This further makes the case for installing residential solar panels until homeowners realize they can’t use their photovoltaic system during a power outage. The vast majority of PV systems connect to the electrical grid allowing homeowners to sell excess energy back to their utility. When the grid goes down in a power outage, these gridtied solar systems shut down as well. If they

were to continue to feed electricity into the grid, it could injure utility workers repairing

lines and equipment. So what’s a homeowner with a PV to do? How can a system be designed that could be usable when not connected to the grid? Get some answers to these questions on Tuesday, February 25! Panelists will discuss clear criteria and obstacles to operating PV off the grid, such as limitations of control interfaces, as well as the increase in costs of systems. Also to be discussed is how difficult and costly it is to have an existing PV system retrofitted. Please join us from 3:00 to 5:00 pm on Tuesday, February 25th. A Walking Meditation in Winter’s Garden by Linda Wiggen Kraft

W

inter is a time to settle into silence, to find that sweet inner space of soul’s pure essence and to be one with nature. There is quiet in the winter. The soft sound of snow falling is a gentle silence not heard at any other time of the year. The quiet essence and colors of winter are a reflection of the inner stillness the soul yearns for. A walk alone where one’s heart, eyes and mind are open is essential for a winter’s garden walking meditation. Being wise about the weather and dressing for it is a must, but both sunny days and days that seem drab can be perfect for a winter garden walk. A walking meditation allows a person to be in the moment and aware of all that is around. It is a time to be mindful of the body as it moves through the outdoor space and a time to feel part of the landscape. A walking pace that feels easy and comfortable, while allowing time to notice the details of the surrounding world works best. Stopping to observe the subtleties of a tree’s bark, or the imprint of a fallen leaf in the snow is

all part of the journey. There is no destination, just the journey. A set time of 20 minutes is often done, or the journey may take its own time. Begin by going to a park, garden or place in nature that can easily be walked through. Enter this space and open your heart to connect with the land, plants and animals that inhabit this world. Feel the crossing of a threshold into a sacred winter space. Hold this space in your heart and allow yourself to receive the beauty and power of it. Stand still and breath in and out deeply for a few moments. Feel feet connecting with the earth and breath in the sky. As each step is taken, be aware of body connecting to earth, the life underground even in winter, the cool air of each breath, the plants above ground alive now, be aware of it all.

For some walking meditations a gatha, meaning verse or hymm, is inwardly recited. The first line is recited with the in breath, the second with the out breath and so on. Here is a winter’s gatha for walking meditation: Entering this winter garden I feel the quiet, peace and power of winter I am one with this garden. I leave behind all that is not of this moment Walking mindfully with open heart will let winter softly grab your attention. Unlike summer that shouts it’s bright colors and seductive shapes; the subtle colors, shapes and movements of the cold months will enter into the deep quiet of the soul to bring a serenity, invigoration and peace. Seeds - An Investment In The Future

C

ontemplating this year’s landscape projects prompts questions of budget versus the wish list—how to afford all the new plants that you want to add? There are many ways to obtain new plants and the easiest is to buy plants already grown by a local nursery, prime for planting. Many gardeners choose to propagate and grow their own plants to cut costs. This can be a rewarding experience that is easier on the budget. Two easy methods of propagating plants are growing them from seed and dividing existing plants from your garden. Seeds, those little parcels with so much promise for the future, whether purchased or collected, should be fresh (from the current year) for best results. Plants grown from seed maintain the genetic diversity of that species whereas plants grown from division are genetic clones of the parent (and thus have less genetic diversity). While it is less expensive to grow plants from seed, patience is a virtue as it may take many plants two to three years to mature to blooming size. At this time of year, your best bet is to purchase seed (see the Resource Guide at www.grownative.org for seed sources). Plan ahead to collect some seed this coming year. Get to know plants’ bloom time to get an indication of when to begin collecting seeds. Seed collecting begins in late spring and continues through late fall, lagging about six weeks or so after the blooms fade. Be patient and allow the seeds time to ripen on the plant—the color of the seed typically becomes brownish in color. Seeds collected too soon do not continue to ripen and therefore will not germinate. Be sure to collect seed when the weather is dry and store the seed in a dry place to avoid spoilage due to mold. Don’t be greedy when collecting seed—take only what you need—local wildlife depends on these seeds for their survival. Once dry, seed can be separated from chaff (plant parts that are not part of the seed), put in a ziplock, labeled with the date and plant name and kept in a cool, dark, dry place. Large areas of a landscape are less expensive to plant with seed rather

than plants, though some people will use some containerized plants and then seed the rest of the area. Seed sown directly outside in late November-December does not need to be stored or given a cold treatment. If you plan to store the seed for spring sowing, mimic winter by adding moist, not wet, media (50% sand/50% potting soil) to the seed in its ziplock bag and refrigerate for a minimum of eight weeks. This required cold treatment (referred to as stratification) enhances germination for most species. These pretreated seeds may be sown outside in the garden at the end of March, directly into the garden, or into pots. To speed up growth, sow seed inside in February-March using full-spectrum lighting and heating pads (attain a soil temperature of 65-70 degrees F.). Whatever method you use, record in a journal what, where and when seeds are collected as well as labeling and photographing both parent plants and seedlings for future reference. While buying finished plants is easier, the gratification and joy of growing your own teaches the full circle way of the plant world, from seed production to seed collection to a whole new generation of plants the next year from which to collect a new crop of seeds. Teach your children and grandchildren how to collect seed and grow plants. Using Missouri native plants will acquaint you with the intimate interactions of pollinators (mostly insects) and the plants they visit, providing that valuable service, pollination, so that plants can produce yet another crop of seed for that year. For more in-depth and hands-on information, attend the Native Plant School (at Shaw Nature Reserve) class, “Greenhouse Propagation” on Thursday, March 13 from 1-4 pm. Cindy Gilberg is a Missouri native and horticulturist whose work includes design and consulting, teaching and writing. Much of her work focuses on native plants, habitat gardens and rain gardens. Cindy’s projects include work at Shaw Nature Reserve and its Native Plant School, the Shaw Professional Landscape Series and the Deer Creek Watershed Alliance. Ask The

HERB LADY Cathy Schram Q: I keep hearing about Oil of Oregano. What is so great about it? A: Oil of Oregano is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic and an anti-oxidant. It is one of the most powerful immune boosters there is. It is much more powerful than echinacea or goldenseal. Due to its anti-fungal properties, it has been shown to kill candida albicans. It is great for your respiratory system, and bronchitis, knocking out coughs in very little time. You don’t want to use oregano from the grocery store, you want to use wild oregano. There is a huge difference. It comes in capsules or in oil form. The oil is great to put on your toothbrush along with your toothpaste to help kill the bacteria in your gums. It is a great topical agent for nail fungus. These are just a few of the things it is used for. Check it out in your health food store. Q: I bought some Valerian Root to help me sleep. Can I become addicted to it?

21

What’s the scoop on oil of oregano and Valerian root? A: Although Valerian Root demonstrates similar effects as prescription sedatives, there is no evidence of dependence or addiction. It helps to reduce anxiety and insomnia by interacting with the inhibitor neurotransmitter GABA, therefore, inducing relaxation and producing a sense of tranquility and calmness. You may find yourself having more vivid dreams while taking Valerian. Perhaps it is because you are sleeping more sound. This herb information is for health education purposes only. 10 healthy living tips

Set Realistic Goals by Crystal Moore-stevens

E

xamples: “I will do yoga twice per day this month”, “I will eat a vegan diet for one month”, I will go for a 20 minute walk each day for 2 weeks” Make lists! Write down your goals! Set goal dates! Visualize a happier you. Make a list of attributes that make up the “ideal you” in present tense. For example: 1. I eat healthy foods which nourish my body 2. I exercise regularly 3. I am kind to others 4. I breathe and meditate regularly to reduce stress 5. I fulfill my dreams 6. I allow time for creativity 7. I love who I am 8. I am patient 9. I speak only kind words 10. I am living to my full potential Smile More! Dance More! Get together with friends more often! My mother and her girlfriends have been getting together once per month for over 25 years! They call it The Second Sunday Club. Friends are vitally important to our well being. Friends give comfort, practical advice, and bring us laughter and joy! Spend quality time with your family! Take candlelit baths with essential oils and lots of sea salt! Dream Big! Try eliminating unhealthy foods from your diet in one fell swoop. It may sound intimidating, challenging and even impossible, but I assure you, from my own experience, it is actually surprisingly easy. It requires a mind shift and a commitment to your health. Recently I became vegan and gluten free. It was way easier than I thought. I got excited about what I was putting in my body, rather than regretful. I have found that the best way to avoid eating unhealthy foods is to quit buying them! In the process, I found myself spending less on healthy foods than I had been on processed foods and dairy products. I noticed such an invigorating change within my body, that I chose a “high raw” diet, wherein most of the foods I eat consist of raw fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. It helped that I had a long history with Healthy Foods. I worked as a juice bar clerk and floral supervisor at Wild Oats for five years, so I had a basic understanding of the importance of wholesome nutrition. A dear friend of mine, Serene, let me borrow a wonderful book several years ago by Alissa Cohen, titled Living on Live Food. Recipes in her book have remained family favorites of ours for many years such as Fettuccini Alfredo, Blueberry Cheesecake, Fruit Cobbler, and Chocolate Mousse, all made with fresh whole fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. I received inspiration this past year from a coworker whose diet consists of “green smoothies” containing fruits, nuts, and nutrient rich dark greens for breakfast and lunch. She has a salad after work and a simple vegan “2nd dinner” later in the evening. This diet keeps her vibrant and healthy. Juicing, green smoothies and raw salads are excellent ways to improve health. Seasonal cleanses and fasting are also great ways to detoxify the body. Fresh organic dried herbs in tincture or tea form such as dandelion, chickweed and milk thistle have excellent purifying properties! Recently I created a recipe for Vegan Raw Pineapple Upside Down Cake with just a few simple ingredients. In a food processor combine: 2 cups of organic raw unsweetened coconut flakes 1 cup of soaked raw pitted dates

Blend until fine (1-2 minutes) Add 1 tbsp of coconut oil 2 tbsp of raw honey And 1/2 cup of fresh pineapple Blend until fine (you will notice the mixture forming a ball in your food processor) In a pie pan greased with a tsp of coconut oil, press the mixture down with your fingers. Top with sliced fresh pineapple. Optional: Coconut crème topping Blend 1 cup of cashews in a food processor. Add a tbsp of honey and one cup of coconut milk Blend until very smooth. Enjoy! Get outside more! According to Richard Ryan, Author and Professor of Psychology at the University of Rochester, "Nature is fuel for the soul. Often when we feel depleted we reach for a cup of coffee, but research suggests a better way to get energized physically and mentally is to connect with nature." According to an article published in the June 2010 issue of the Journal of Environmental Psychology, ‘Research shows that being outside in nature for just 20 minutes in a day was enough to significantly boost vitality levels.’ As the spring approaches, I like to spend half of my waking hours outside, which is easy to do as a farmer. Late winter evening walks are a great way to fulfill this desire for those who work indoors. On your days off, try hiking in places you’ve never been before. There are several nature preserves and hiking trails that are less than an hour from St. Louis including Powder Valley Nature Center, Emmenegger Nature Park, Castlewood, Laumeier Sculpture Park, and Shaw Nature Preserve.

Illinois also has some great trails. Pere Marquette State Park and The Nature Institute are located near The Great River Road, the scenic byway into Grafton IL. Here are links to some great spots in and around town. http://www.everytrail.com/best/hiking-st-louismissouri There is a great book titled 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: St. Louis Guide Book written by Steve Henry If you would rather stay close to the city, St. Louis has amazing city parks. Forest Park, Tower Grove, Carondolet, and St. Francis Parks all have lovely walking paths. Strolling through the Botanical Garden is a beautiful way to unwind after a long work week. “LOVE” with

Chaplain Paul

t’s that time of year when countless numbers of people will be using creative ways to show their love to someone special. Flowers! Candy! Special Dinner! Gifts! Love, what an amazing thing. Thousands of songs written, books, poems, movies, you name it! Our culture is fascinated by this thing we call “LOVE”. We chase after it. We grieve deeply when we lose it. The human spirit seems to keep looking for it, sadly though, sometimes in all the wrong places. Let’s take a look at what is Love really. The Bible has a wonderful definition. It seems to be embraced throughout the many faith traditions around the world. The Apostle Paul in a letter to the people of Corinth described love the following way. He is presenting the belief that if we do not have love than we have nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but

rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. Love never fails. So, in my way of thinking, love is much more than a feeling. It is the essence of our being and the instrument that bonds us together. Consummate love is synergistic. It adds to us. It Empowers. It seeks Ultimate “Purpose”, “Meaning” and “Hope” in life. It is the key to Wholeness! One of my most favorite scriptures in the Bible is in the book of 1 John. It states: “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” For me, Love is the Divine and Sacredness of God in us! It is what we are created to be. It can enable us to defeat the destructive forces of Fear, Guilt, Shame, Blame and Anger that robs us from our health and wellbeing. So, on this Valentine’s Day don’t send or give a Valentine gift, “BE THE GIFT”. Happy Valentine’s Day! Dr. Yu and I want to invite you again to our Medical Spiritual Wellness Support Group at Prevention and Healing. The group meets on the third Tuesday of each month from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. The address is 10908 Schuetz Road St Louis, MO 63146. Next Meeting Tuesday February 18, 2013. Blessings and Peace! Chaplain Paul Director for Medical Spiritual Wellness Prevention and Healing, Inc. ARTful Living St. Louis Area Fine Arts, Crafts & Performing Arts Michelle “Mike” Ochonicky, Arts Editor ern dancers, athletes, stunt performers, martial artists, ballet and hip-hop dancers. As asked by The New York Times, "Are they dancers who perform like gymnasts or gymnasts who move like dancers?” Dance St. Louis doesn’t care what you call it---Diavolo is awesome! Known for pushing the boundaries of dance, Diavolo combines the thrilling with the elegant. Signature use of gigantic set pieces is impressive, including a 15-foot staircase, an 18-foot steel wheel, and more. Even Diavolo’s name is a unique combination, merging the Spanish word for “day” with the Latin word for “I fly.” Founded in 1992, the dance company was named a “cultural treasure” by the City of Los Angeles in 2007. Seeing Diavolo perform is sure to be a treasured experience. Learn more about Diavolo at www.diavolo.org. Holistic Help For A “Broken” Heart HealtHy pets Winter is upon us! Take Heed! The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. — Gandhi

e are just getting a taste of winter weather, albeit with little snow, but more than enough frigid cold. What are our pet concerns this time of year? Many should be obvious, but nonetheless, we will review them for our reading audience. Cold can be threatening, but wet cold and wind are really the culprits of concern. Obviously, the best protection for your pets is to keep them inside your home, the basement, or even the garage. Yet, even these protected areas may not be enough. Provide insulating materials for floor coverings, or in some cases you might consider hanging a heat light or radiant heater. I know they are available at most hardware stores or at your local Grainger Store. For pets obligated to an outside dog house, be sure to insulate the walls, floor and ceiling. Straw floors can be useful, but need to be cleaned regularly to avoid pet exposure to collecting feces or urine. Fresh water must be available. There are safe water heaters you can install for your pet bowls, but be sure Fido can access water at all times. Further, nutritional needs often increase during these cold months of winter, as your pets are fighting to create body heat through increased metabolism. Having extra calories may prove quite beneficial. However, I strongly suggest you visit with your veterinarian before changing up the diet program. If your pet already has issues with obesity, or may have a medical condition like diabetes or kidney disease, requiring special consideration before making such a change! Pet clothing is a significant industry these days. I believe there is real value in considering some sort of pet apparel that not only spruces his/her looks, but keeps their core body temperature in a proper range. Remember that ears, muzzles & lips, and certainly, feet are all going to be inordinately exposed to the elements. You may need to protect those areas with coverings, or at least with regular cleaning and care as well. Ice and snow can pack up between the toes and pads of the feet, creating damage or even frostbite. Ears are particularly vulnerable to this condition. It is basically, a freezer burn to the tissue that may result in a full tissue slough, if you are not careful. Another big concern in wintertime regards all the chemicals and other products available to your pets, especially for pets who are being housed in basements and garages. Lock up fertilizers, bug sprays and the like. Be sure the cabinets and storage boxes are secure. Whatever is safe for your kids is good policy to employ for your pets. Electric cords for heaters and such, need to be secured away from your exploring pets, as they can bite straight away and either get an electric burn, or even electrocution.

And, we always discuss the concerns of anti-freeze, or ethylene glycol, which most of us use in our winter radiators. The problem is that this chemical is sweet tasting and thereby, an attractant for pets. The poisoning by anti-freeze is dose and time dependent. If you have any inclination of a poisoning or exposure, please take your pet to the vet or to an emergency facility immediately. One last note concerns cats. They are amazingly capable at protecting themselves in the height of winter and usually do just fine. Nonetheless, I encourage all cat owners to follow all the concerns and suggestions presented herein. Cats like to hide up in the car engine where they find adequate heat. I can tell you that nary a winter season goes by without cats being injured or killed when their owners unknowingly start the engine as they leave for work. Please be careful and mindful of both your cats and your dogs, and consciously implement good cautionary practices on their behalf. Enjoy the beauty and serenity of winter time. Just do it carefully!! Fondly, Dr. Doug pernikoff Clarkson-Wilson Veterinary Clinic Vet pet rescue www.clarksonwilsonvet.com

eart disease is common among dogs and cats. It may be congenital or acquired later in life. Cardiac disease may present as valvular insufficiency, endocarditis, cardiomyopathy, or even congestive heart failure. Clinical signs may be as subtle as a pet that does not move or play as much as normal. More overt symptoms are coughing, exercise intolerance, excessive panting, cyanosis, or labored breathing due to fluid accumulation in the thoracic or abdominal cavities. Your veterinarian can diagnose cardiac disease based on history, physical exam, thoracic radiographs, and blood pressure readings. There is a relatively new blood test, cardiopet pro BNP, that alerts us to excessive stretch and stress on the myocardium. A positive test means clinical heart disease is likely. At this point, an echocardiogram is indicated in order to determine the exact type of cardiac disease as well as severity and prognosis. There are many treatment options available to help manage the various types of heart disease. In moderate or severe forms of disease western medicines may be employed. Conventional drug therapy consists of diuretics to reduce excess fluid accumulation, ace-inhibitors to help vasodilation and decrease high blood pressure, and strengthening agents to help the myocardium function more efficiently. These drugs can be vital to manage heart failure. At Animal Health & Healing we firmly believe an integrative approach is best for overall success of treatment. Whether heart disease is mild, moderate, or severe holistic medicine can help to slow the progression of disease, increase quality of life, and perhaps decrease dosages of western medicines. A holistic approach to heart disease incorporates diet, exercise, and heart-healthy supplements consisting of herbs, antioxidants, and fish oils. Diet is paramount. A healthy natural diet should be composed of whole foods such as organic meats and vegetables, organ meats such as heart and liver, and be low in salt. Balanced home-made diets meet these criteria and pets find them very tasty too. If our patients are overweight, we will encourage a slow weight loss program using diet and careful exercise to relieve excess burden on the heart. Various herbs are often used to strengthen the cardiovascular system. Hawthorne berry is the most frequently recommended herbal remedy for the heart. Hawthorne can strengthen and repair the heart muscle and lower blood pressure. Dan Shen increases blood circulation and lowers cholesterol. Zizziphus is a tonic for the heart, detoxifies the blood, and decreases stress and weakness associated with heart disease. Siberian Ginseng can counteract weakness, fatigue and declining stamina. Grape seed extract has been shown to decrease vascular constriction, reverse arteriosclerosis, lower cholesterol and prevent damage to the lining of the arteries. In addition to herbs, antioxidants, amino acids, and fish oils are integral supplements for

optimal heart health. Vitamin E has been shown to prevent cardiovascular disease and slow the rate of heart disease. It strengthens heart muscle and reduces progression of coronary artery disease. Co-Enzyme Q 10 is cardioprotective by reducing the impact of hypoxia upon the heart. The levels of Co Q 10 in the body decrease with age so supplementing older pets can be important. Supplementation with selenium may help prevent hypoxia, cardiomyopathy, and vasoconstriction. Magnesium is a vital mineral for maintaining normal heart rhythm, valve function, and protects against hypoxia. The amino acids taurine and carnitine are essential cofactors in restoring and maintaining cardiac health at the cellular level. Taurine strengthens heart muscle and prevents the loss of potassium from the heart. This, in turn, can prevent cardiac arrhythmias. Carnitine is effective in treating cardiovascular disease in both small and large animals. Natural fish oils are cardioprotective in both humans and small animals. These oils contain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in the form of EPA and DHA. Not only are they beneficial to the heart, but they also protect renal function and decrease inflammation throughout the body. It is of vital importance to establish a close relationship with your veterinarian to determine the best course of treatment for your pet. Treatment protocols, whether holistic or conventional or both, must be individualized since heart disease varies in its clinical presentation and prognosis. Once treatment is instituted, you should pay close attention to your pet’s energy level and exercise tolerance. Watch closely for coughing, panting, and cyanosis. Your veterinarian will need to monitor your pet’s progress with regular exams, blood tests, radiographs, and blood pressure checks. The outcome of heart disease varies from case to case due to numerous variables. Some pets can be managed successfully for years. Some will only live a few months. My own little dog, Pricilla, was afflicted with a heart murmur for years. She did quite well with a natural diet and heart-healthy supplements. Then, right after the passing of my other dog Stevie, Pricilla went into severe congestive heart failure. In spite of the best treatment veterinary medicine could offer, Pricilla died of congestive heart failure just 10 weeks after we had lost Stevie. Needless to say, my own heart was broken at that point. But, like animal lovers everywhere, I feel blessed to have known the love, companionship, and joy my pets have given me. And my new little dog “Baby Love” Garden has filled the void in my broken heart with much love, laughter, and happiness. here is a circle that becomes full when you witness an energetic healing with an animal. Picture an animal companion as part of a family unit, and not less than the other members but as important. I am not suggesting that you have your pets eating with you at the dinner table, but they are a larger part of the puzzle of your family’s emotional dynamics than you may realize. When I meet with people to work with their “pets” for energy therapy, one question that comes up frequently is, “why would he be stressed, he is a dog?” Animals are empaths (the paranormal ability to apprehend the mental or emotional state of another individual). We all know how it is when a member of our family is upset...we can feel it and we want to help. But without learning of an energetic boundary when having a sense of understanding, we can also take on others emotions. When we think of wanting to take away their pain that may energetically do exactly that, unless we are aware to hold a space of compassion and allow others to process what they are feeling and learn from it. When we see others as strong during difficulties, as a supportive prayer, we help encourage their growth. Animals have this same system of empathetic nature. I learned this personally when I dealt with my own crisis years ago and had to take a sabbatical from my work. I observed my dog beginning to show signs of a weakening immune system as well as developing a tremor. She was mirroring

my symptoms as well as taking on the stress. I met with a Spiritual teacher that helped me understand this better energetically. With some simple energy techniques and communication with my dog, she now sits close by or observes when I am under stress and she does not try to process if for me. When I assist an animal with an emotional or physical discomfort, many times the root issue not only has to do with a trauma they may be holding onto from their own past experiences but there is also the issue of processing one of their family members stress. We can learn to communicate with our animals for this reason and help them heal. It is another tool for unraveling the issue as well as honoring our animal companions as a part of our complete family unit. For more information on the BioMat Call 314-725-6767

The BioMat’s quantum energetics allows the body to fight disease and heal with a naturally strong and efficient immune system. It is composed of 17 layers of technology, combining Far Infrared Rays (FIR), negative ions and amethyst crystals. Time spent on the mat relieves pain and joint stiffness, reduces stress and fatigue, boosts the immune system, burns calories and many other healthful benefits. Infrared Rays, nature’s invisible light and most

beneficial light wave, penetrate skin and increase circulation to detoxify the body of harmful toxins. The FIR can increase blood flow and clean the arteries (which means it can help lower blood pressure), release toxins, increase metabolism, heal soft tissue and relax muscles. Negative Ions are Nature’s Energizer. Ion particles cleanse and purify the air we breathe. Amethyst bolsters the production of the hormones

and strengthens the cleansing organs, the circulatory system and blood, the immune system and body metabolism. Be proactive about your health and well being. A good nights sleep on the BioMat or a mere 30 minute nap, can go a long way to ensuring a healthier, happier you. Call The Center for Mind, Body & Spirit to schedule an appointment to try the BioMat. 314.725.6767.

Our approach to holistic health includes the entire body and the oral cavity is no exception. We are dedicated to serving our patients and promoting a level of health care that carefully evaluates and reviews the use of dental materials, dental procedures and also offers dietary and nutritional support for each and every individual that is seen in our office.

Did you know that examining the mouth can reveal the presence of illnesses or unstable conditions in other areas of the body? If you feel like you’ve just about exhausted all your options in your search for better health, have your mouth examined with a different approach in mind. Get motivated, get educated, and get ready to participate in a

health-oriented lifestyle that will provide dental alternatives and a nutritional foundation designed to help support your own body’s healing powers.

The focus of holistic dentistry is to consider the mouth as a part of the whole body. We use materials and methods that are more compatible biologically with the body instead of the traditional dental materials. Examples of non-compatible materials are mercury fillings, non-precious heavy metal crowns, bridges and partials or dentures. Alternatives to fluoride are used

for the prevention of cavities. Proper alignment of the jaws and teeth are the foundation of how the body perceives itself in space. The result of improper alignment can result in symptoms of headache, ears ringing, loss of hearing, pain in the head and neck and clenching or grinding of the teeth. Good nutrition is inseparable for good

health. If your diet consists of food and drink made with white flour, sugar and no fresh fruits and vegetables, your body is likely to be acidic with resultant more medical and dental problems. For your dental evaluation contact our office for an appointment by calling 636-4589090 or email at cherryhillsdds@yahoo.com.

f total healthcare costs in the United States, more than 75% is due to chronic conditions. The key to reversing the rapidly spreading epidemic of chronic disease is to address the underlying causes and solutions for chronic disease, which are primarily driven by the lifelong, daily interaction among an individual’s genetics, environment, and lifestyle choices. Functional medicine not only incorporates the latest in genetic science and systems biology, but it also enables holistic doctors/health care practitioners to practice proactive, predictive, personalized medicine while empowering patients to take an active role in their own health. February 11 deadline Missouri BoTanicaL garden announces rainscaPing PriZe drawings and reBaTes New trends are emerging locally and nationwide on converting standard residential lawns into more sustainable landscapes. Interested landowners may need assistance however, in navigating these new strategies. For a limited time, Missouri Botanical Garden is offering RainScaping Prize Drawings valued at $350 to $1,000 and a RainScape Rebates Program valued at up to $2,000 per landowner. The loss of water quality in the St. Louis Region is due to many factors including run-off during storm events from impervious surface areas, yard waste, pet manure, invasive species, trash and road salt. These factors can lead to increased water pollution, sedimentation, and infrastructure and property damage. However, homeowners can help through landscaping practices that help capture rain where it falls instead of allowing water to run off-site. Various techniques, called rainscaping, can be used to help solve drainage problems, facilitate healthier streams,

increase aesthetic appeal, improve property values, and attract wildlife. Interested parties are invited to fill out a survey at www.mobot.org/rainscaping by February 11, 2014 for a chance to win a $500 gift certificate to the Shaw Nature Reserve Spring Wildflower Market; 10 flats of GT-38 Deep Cell Plug Native Plants and site visit from DJM Ecoscapes valued at $1,000; plant material for a shade or full sun rain garden by Horstmann Brothers valued at $400; 10 man hours of labor for either a landscape/rain garden design or labor towards installing rainscaping or invasive species removal from Simply Sustainable Landscaping valued at $350; any rain barrel in stock up to 150 gallons valued up to $449 from Rainwater Harvesting Supply Company, LLC; or a rustic natural stone bench, installed from Luna Landscaping, LLC valued at $450.00.In addition, landowners in 19 participating St. Louis municipalities are eligible to take part in the RainScape Rebates program. This voluntary program financially assists landowners in the Deer Creek Watershed wishing to landscape their yards to improve stormwater management. Residents in the appropriate municipalities may download a RainScape Rebates application form at www.deercreekalliance.org or pick up a hard copy application form at a participating city hall starting November 15, 2013. The application deadline for the third round of funding is February 12, 2014. Eligible cities include Brentwood, Clayton, Creve Coeur, Crystal Lake Park, Des Peres, Frontenac, Glendale, Huntleigh, Kirkwood, Ladue, Maplewood, Olivette, Richmond Heights, Rock Hill, Shrewsbury, Town & Country, University City, Warson Woods and Webster Groves. The RainScape Rebates Program is partially funded by Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District, Great Rivers Greenway, Missouri Department of Conservation, the Mabel Dorn Reeder Foundation, and US EPA Region 7 through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (subgrant number G11-NPS-15), under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act.Today, 154 years after opening, the Missouri Botanical Garden is a National Historic Landmark and a center for science, conservation, education and horticultural display. With scientists working in 35 countries on six continents around the globe, the Missouri Botanical Garden has one of the three largest plant science programs in the world and a mission to discover and share knowledge about plants and their environment in order to preserve and enrich life.
