ew Year is the time of change. The calendar, the season and for many people, too. When I think about change, a Wayne Dyer quote comes to mind, “Change the way you look at things and the things you look at will change.” Dr. Dyer has written many self-empowerment books over the years, transforming from “warrior” to “prophet”. It’s true, we all go through many different lives in a lifetime. I keep telling my children that. Well, they are adult children now in their early 20s. But young people always feel like “this is it”, “this is the most important”, or “this is my only chance.” Well, us silverbacks always chuckle at a statement like that. If life is a novel, then they have just experienced a few of the opening chapters. And yet, so much does happen from childhood to young adulthood. Those are certainly some formative years (I “Wonder” who told us that growing up.) You do learn a lot about yourself in that "tween" stage. But mostly you are just trying to catch your breath and jump on and off the merry-go-round. The teen years are a whirlwind of hormones and the early 20s are an adventure into adulthood. So much energy goes into expanding your mind, your relationships and this unfortunately is the time you solidify some of those bad habits. Love has become a mantra and self-importance a way of life. Acceptance from your peers continues on from your teen years, but there is some pulling away and it becomes enlightening to discover one’s sense of

January, 2014 self from time to time. Then you jump into your 30s and a career, and marriage and family are a part of your fiber. Your heart gets broken a few times along the way. But you recover eventually. Soon it becomes evident that no one is more important than number one. Not in a selfish way, but in a personal growth way. Some of us take longer to discover ourselves, some try most of our lives. Purpose becomes more important than pleasing. Catering to friends takes a back seat to family. Not in a mean way, but in an expanding horizons way. Children make you more complete where you might have thought a few life’s pieces were missing. And then your 40s finds career and family sometimes in conflict. A few hard times thickens our skin for even harder times to come. In your 50s you experience Charlie death and dying and a few dreams perhaps you have had since childhood are never recognized. But so many other hopes emerge and happiness grows as you become more satisfied with who you are and that mid life crisis left you bruised but not beaten. Truth is, there is nothing more wonderful than having dreams and aspirations and working to see them come to life. And your realize, it’s the process -- not the product. If one dream fails, another is added to the list and so long as you have a plan, there is hope. And in the end, hope is what keeps all of us going. Year after year after year. Hope that our dreams can come true. Hope that our children’s dreams come true, hope that we can still find a smile after tears and joy after sorrow. Life is indeed like a novel. Each of us our own author. Each of us with pen in hand, love in our heart and hope in our soul. Another year gone by. Another paragraph on the page. A few sayings come to mind when I get this philosophical about new year’s resolutions: “The scenery only changes for the lead dog” “We accept the love we think we deserve.” “It’s never too late to change.” Happy New Year,

Learning to Love ourseLves . . . Whitney Houston’s song plays in my mind from time to time. In a world searching for heroes or something to believe in outside of ourselves, we forget that the “Greatest Love of All” is inside of each of us. Spend time finding ways to be gentle with yourself, to love yourself. It will have a rippling effect and touch everyone you meet. Appreciate beauty and Nature. Take care of your body. Get a massage. Breathe. Be Grateful. Find the greatest love of all, inside of you. C. goodnetter, LMt, nCtMB, Director a gathering Place - Massage school and Clinic 314-739-5559 www.agatheringplace.com

CHoose HoW You tHinK! It's the new year! What do you hope to change? Lasting change often starts with a renewed perspective. One of the most powerful assets gifted to human beings is the ability to choose how we think. When you feel stuck, do you consider how every situation is FOR you? What is the learning? Some call it "finding the gold". Napoleon Hill deemed it "the seed of equivalent advantage" in every adversity. It may take practice, but changing our thoughts is a primary step toward strengthening our resolve, our health, our future, and our relationship with the outside world. the center for mind, body and spirit Deborah Zorensky, ms, rd, ld, ccn dzorensky@centerformindbodyspirit.com Phone: 314.725.6767

reMove negative Core BeLieFs Your “Core Beliefs” are the pilot navigating the ship of your life. All decisions and choices are made based on these beliefs. The sad thing is that most people are carrying around unresolved emotional issues that contribute to the formation of negative core beliefs. The pain from this is self-inflicted and plays major havoc with your sense of “Value” and “Self Worth”. My tip for you is to encourage you to learn how to remove these negative core beliefs and restore your health and wellbeing to its fullest potential. I can help you do that! stress reDuCtion Too much stress or the inability to deal with stress can greatly impact your health. Stress can increase depression, headaches, panic attacks and ulcers. It can weaken the immune system, decrease quality of sleep, and increase risk of injury. To better handle stress we must first identify the source. Remember to stay positive, get organized, and be

assertive. Make prioritized lists of what MUST be done vs. what SHOULD be done. Set goals and reward yourself for achievements. Chiropractic care, proper nutrition, posture, exercise, sleep and relaxation are all key components to keeping your mind and body ready for anything. Have any injuries, aches, or pains assessed and treated to reduce the stresses that you can control. FoCus on Positive goaLs Well, its that time of year again when people all over the world start setting their new years resolutions. And, that’s always a good thing! By far, the most popular of all resolutions is losing weight and getting healthy. In 2014, Focus on Positive Goals with your diet, rather than deprivation. All too many people focus on “I’m not eating this”, “I’m giving up that”, “No more of this”, etc. when they start changing their dietary habits. Instead, focus your dietary goals around eating more of what your body needs: Lots of Lean proteins, Fruits, Vegetables, and Water! Focus on getting good stuff in, not so much on “keeping the bad stuff out.” Dr. adam Hughes Kingen Chiropractic Wellness Center www.KingenChiropractic.com www.DradamHughes.CoM

T’ai Chi Ch’uan

For Health and Fitness by Paul MacFarlane and Bill Grivna

Y

ou’ve probably seen people practicing T’ai Chi on TV, in a movie, or even locally, in a park or at the botanical garden. You know it’s a slow moving, graceful exercise that is supposed to be beneficial. You may have heard that at advanced levels it is a formidable martial art based on relaxation, yielding, and using an opponent’s energy against himself. But what do you really know about the many health benefits that can be gained from this wonderful, relaxing exercise system? T’ai Chi, when practiced regularly, has been said to improve relaxation, concentration, coordination, flexibility, postural alignment, and both physical and mental balance or centering. If some or all of this sounds intriguing to you, then we’d like to introduce you to the St. Louis T’ai Chi Ch’uan Association, a not-forprofit organization has been offering classes in the art of T’ai Chi Ch’uan since 1979. “The five principles we practice are: relax and sink, separate the weight, waist as commander, body upright and beautiful lady’s wrist, ” said Michael David, President of the Association. Mr. David has practiced the Yang Style Short Form, as taught by the Association for nearly twenty years. And like most of the Association’s students, T’ai Chi Ch’uan has changed his life in countless ways. Mr. David experienced a more relaxed manner at work, increased health and vitality, plus improved balance and strength. David adds, “These benefits

come subtly, like laying a sheet of paper on top of a sheet of paper. Over time, you find the way you sit, stand and move tends to change. You gain strength, balance, suppleness, stamina, and most of all, a more meditative approach to daily living.” For centuries, T’ai Chi Ch’uan was kept a closely-guarded family secret in China. But today, anyone with a sincere interest can learn the basics of the Form. With dedicated practice, some, if not all of the above benefits can be realized – something of value for the remainder of any student’s life. The Yang Style Short Form taught at the Association was condensed (mostly by eliminating repetitions) from the Long Form by Professor Cheng ManCh’ing, a supremely gifted master of t’ai chi ch’uan, painting, calligraphy, medicine and poetry. Benjamin Lo, one of the Professor’s senior students, has taught all of the Association’s current instructors. Now in his eighties, Mr. Lo still has strength, sensitivity and suppleness that must be felt to be believed. Yang Style T’ai Chi is characterized by slow, rhythmic movements of the body. The Form can be practiced at any age, requires no special equipment beyond comfortable, loose clothing and flat, thin-soled shoes. Once learned, the Form takes about eight minutes to practice. To learn more about T’ai Chi Ch’uan, call 314-961-1355 or go to www.taichistlouis.org Beginner classes start Sunday, February 2, 2014 at the Monday Club in Webster Groves. suCCessful resoluTions Reflections for a Successful New Year. I love psychologist Dr. Richard Wiseman’s take on what makes for successful resolutions, he advises the following: Focus on one goal; Break the goal into small achievable steps; Give yourself a small reward upon achieving each step; When you slip, focus on the upside of success and resume your previous efforts; Journal your progress; Broadcast your goal to friends and supportive community. If being healthy and full of vitality is your goal for the New Year, consider partnering with Preventive Medicine to support this worthy endeavor. Varsha rathod M.D. www.preventivemedicinestl.com

A GooD niGhT’s sleep Nothing ruins health or looks like not getting enough sleep. 7 1/2 hours minimum. If you are unable to fall asleep or stay asleep you need to have your hormones checked: adrenal hormones, sex hormones and thyroid. Don’t drink or eat caffeine during the day if you are having sleep problems. Also, watch out for exercising in the evening, if may keep you up. Get your TV out of the bedroom whether you are having sleep problems or not. If you can’t sleep at night because those happen to be your working hours, try to change it if you can. Occasional late nights won’t cause too many problems but if working at night is a permanent fixture in your life, remember that they don’t call it the “graveyard shift” for nothing. If persons or situations are preventing sleep, do your best to remove yourself from the person or situation. If you are unable to do this, pray or meditate about it. O

2014, Here We Come! with

Chaplain Paul

ver the past several months I have worked with many people who are improving the quality of their health and wellbeing by addressing the toxic issues in their lives and making major changes. As part of the process they all develop a Wellness Plan of Care to implement into their lives. The following is a list of things that seem to be universal that they are discovering in their lives now. • I need to identify the unfinished issues in my life that are toxic and resolve them. • I am finding a clarity of direction and purpose in my life. • I am definitely taking more risks… • I am not afraid. • I am learning to deal with and accept the messes in my life with a patience and commitment for creating order. • I am more aware of my inner self, my inner child and a better parent to myself. • I am seeing the results of having less and less toxicity in my life.

• I am feeling more liberty and freedom in ways I would have never thought possible. • I now know the meaning of my “Inner Embrace”….I am learning to love myself. • My inner child has come forth to be integrated with my whole being. I no longerfeel conflicted. • I am discovering my uniqueness and how • I fit into life.

SPEND tiME iN NAtURE A prescription for health and happiness is to spend some time in nature and in the garden. The easiest way to absorb the healing and enlivening energy of nature is to take a walk where you are surrounded by the beauty of growing things. Year round walks in large city parks, our own amazing botanical garden, in rural nature reserves and state parks are all places that enhance health and happiness by simply spending time in them. In warmer months spend time in your own garden planting, digging, harvesting and caring for plants that nurture your body and your soul. Love without Limitations For world peace we must master “unconditional love” (love without limitations). Start with our own home and families, our workplace, our schools, our communities, state, nation and globally. The sancity of life is suffering around the globe. Violence and abuse are common in today’s world . What can we do to make a difference for the future of our children, their children, and so on? It is a huge undertaking, but we must learn and live unconditional love, so that we can give this gift of love to our future generations. This is my mantra for 2014. mary magill, alternative hospice. 636-343-3839.

eat a saLad every day “Sometimes it can be hard to make sure you eat enough vegetables each day. One easy way to add several servings of vegetables in one meal is by enjoying a salad daily. Think of your salad as a blank canvas – each day your salad can be a new colorful work of art. Paint your plate by starting off with a dark, leafy green, such as spinach, and add a variety of brightly-hued, crunchy vegetables. To avoid boredom, switch up your veggie selection each time. Top with a lean protein and light salad dressing and you’ve got a delicious, healthy, fiber-filled meal.” Kari hartel, rd, Ld Program Coordinator, Cooking matters, operation Food search Phone: 314.726.5355 ext. 22 kari.hartel@operationFoodsearch.org www.operationFoodsearch.org

seLF-hyPnosis My weight loss clients stay focused on healthy eating and exercise habits by practicing self-hypnosis daily for 20 minutes. Most use a recording of one of their sessions to relax, focus and reinforce the positive habits that create the behavioral changes which lead to weight loss. Just stopping to relax deeply for 20 minutes is very healing. The hypnotic relaxation allows the client to reduce stress and restore a sense of control over their choices. The clients that practice this form of relaxation, exceed the results of those that do not use selfhypnosis by a significant amount. Because of self-hypnosis, the suggestions become automatic unconscious habits. william mitchell m. div., BCh, Ci Founder/managing director Personal motivation hypnosis Clinic two Cityplace drive, Creve Coeur) mo 877-708-5822, www.hypnoprogram.com www.wmpmhc.info

JoiN a csa FarM Every January is full of so many resolutions, "I will’s” and "I want to’s”, often in regards to food and diet. I invite you to throw those out the window with me this year and instead make just one commitment that you'll be enjoying the (health) benefits of long past 2014: Join a CSA farm! In the world of small-scale farming, CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. By signing up for a CSA share, you’re signing you and your family up for 24 or more weeks of fresh produce, locally and thoughtfully grown. In my opinion, it’s the best way to commit to eating lots of veggies, trying new ingredients, and cooking seasonally. I think being a part of a CSA leads to CSE - common sense eating. Fire In Wood

I

n the depth of the winter season, we burn wood every day. We heat our home with a wood stove. I prepare meals on our woodburning cook stove. In high summer months, friends gather around enjoying bonfire and story. We drum and sing around ceremonial fires. I have huddled by fires in winter and been scorched by them in summer.

My soul has need of a wood fire. Every morning as I stoke the stove and rekindle the flames, I open to the blessings and healings of the fire’s spirit. I tell my dreams to the fire and the fire teaches me about the eternal flame I carry within. Fire is the element of will and courage. Fire symbolizes our own inner creative spark and the wisdom of our soul’s memory hidden deep within, awaiting release. Gaze into a shimmering flame and feel the infinite aspect of your spirit stir. Fire draws people in. Fire mesmerizes. Something deep inside us connects with fire. I have circled around countless fires witnessing the enchanted gaze in people’s eyes. Children are fascinated by fire. As kids, we just couldn’t resist setting small sticks ablaze, watching smoke curl, feeling the intense heat, imagining creature faces in the coals. This element of rapid transformation demands respect and awe. I marvel at its shape shifting nature and many faces... gentle flicker-

ing candle, welcoming hearth, sustaining cook fire, illuminating lightning, rejuvenating wildfire, ash of destruction, passion of creativity and life’s work. Walking woodland's edge, I gather small dry twigs to fill the kindling can. It is a daily meditation of gratitude for the gift within the wood. Good dry kindling is the essential foundation of fire building. It is impossible to start a fire without seasoned twigs, dry leaves or grasses, inner bark, sycamore balls or cattail tufts. A full kindling can and a substantial stack of firewood gives me a strong sense of security. This sense may stem from cellular memories of my Northern European ancestral reliance on the hearth fire. The hearth is the central focus of the home. The present day hearth, the kitchen stove, reflects this longing to gather around the fire. How often do you visit and find everyone crammed into the kitchen? The hearth fire still draws people together. With the amount of energy and focus one puts into obtaining firewood, you learn to appreciate each log, stick and branch. The tasks... collect, haul, load, unload, split, stack, carry... culminate with offering the wood to the fire. The fire in wood is then released. It’s a meditation on our fundamental relationship with Nature. Sometimes it’s the simple things, like fire in wood, that can warm the heart and feed the soul. May the blessing of fire be on you – fire without and fire within.

Naturally Boost Your Energy! by Amy K Davis, M.D.

“F

atigue” is the most common complaint that I hear from patients. It can vary from tired to full blown exhaustion, often accompanied by poor endurance, brain fog and irritability. The challenge to treating Fatigue is that it can come from so many potential sources. By breaking down the potential causes we find effective solutions. Here are some of the common causes of fatigue that can be easily corrected.

DiEt – Processed foods, sugar, carbs and grains can all contribute. The solution is straight forward. Stay away from the middle part of the grocery store where the processed foods are placed. Eat fresh vegetables and fruits and limit your carbs and grains. Reduce sugars! Make a green smoothie each day. Greens are high in B-Vitamins which are critical for energy production. It will give you a quick boost of energy and as a bonus supports the body’s natural detoxification process. Poor DigEstioN – This is a very common problem today. When there are not enough digestive enzymes and bile present to efficiently digest food to the simplest particles, you cannot produce adequate energy. Symptoms of poor digestion may include: bloating, heartburn, bad breath, loose stools, constipation, food craving and weight gain in the mid-section. There are many good profes-

DYsBiosis (imBalaNcED iNtEstiNal flora) – The micro-environment of the small intestines is very complex and contains beneficial and non-beneficial bacteria and yeast. There are influences that impact whether the flora is healthy or not. The negative influences include antibiotics, poor digestion, poor fiber intake and sugar. Probiotics (Promoting life) are healthy bacteria. To support healthy flora you may benefit from digestive enzymes (starves the bad guys), probiotic supplements (supports good guys), and fiber (food source for healthy flora). This will help to tilt the scales towards a healthy gut. slEEP – not enough or poor quality. Natural agents that can be helpful for sleep include: Melatonin, or 5-HTP which helps to calm and improves sleep. By gently supporting serotonin levels in the brain, sleep and mood improves. Passion flower, chamomile, valerian, lavender are botanicals that can be effective. There are many products sold that contain these as a blend. PULSED MAGNETIC CELLULAR EXERCISE With the MG-PRO

We want to welcome you to the world of PEMF: Pulsed Electromagnetic Field. PEMF is widely used in Europe and other parts of Russia and Asia, where it has been a standard therapy. While this is a new technology in North America, it is really an innovative, emerging technology with extensive research and useage behind it. The MG-PRO is a generator that produces a DC (direct current) pulsed electromagnetic field of varying strengths delivered via insulated cables. No current of any kind comes into contact with the body. The magnetic field energy produced at the cable passes freely through living tissue for the purpose of cellular exercise to promote and support a sense of well being.

Studies of PEMF include astounding results with: Anxiety Disorders Athletic Performance AutoImmune Back Pain Bone/Osteo Burns Cancer Depression Epilepsy

Is there anything I can do that is safe but effective? A: You are not alone! Everyone gets caught up in the joyous activities, the family and friend gatherings and the next thing you know – you have gained unwanted holiday weight. Of course, the old saying, “calories in vs. calories out” (meaning eat less, exercise more) is the best way to lose weight. However, there are some supplements that can help you in your quest. First, you might want to cleanse your colon and digestive tract to rid your body of undigested foods and toxins. This alone can help you lose a few pounds quickly. You will also feel great and you will be able to absorb your nutrients better. I will go over a few supplement choices; however, it would be best to talk with a health care professional, nutritionist, or herbalist to see what would be the right choice for you. Fibrous herbs such as psyllium and guar gum help absorb fats and pull them through the intestinal tract. They also help you to feel “more full” thereby keeping you from over-eating. If you are having sugar cravings you may want to try Chromium GTF. This mineral helps balance your blood sugar thereby reducing the craving for sweets. CLA or conjugated linoleic acid is a fat metabolizer and increases muscle tone. This essential fatty acid is a great supplement if you work out on a regular basis. Other fat

metabolizers are chickweed and lecithin. If you want to increase your metabolism and burn more calories, try one of the following: Garcinia Cambogia – It helps to suppress appetite and block fat absorption. African Mango Extract – Excellent for appetite suppression, boosts metabolism to burn calories and reduces blood sugar levels. It has even been shown to reduce cholesterol. Raspberry Ketones – Shrinks your fat cells and helps to burn fat. Green Coffee Bean extract – Another fat burner. Even though its name suggests that it contains caffeine, it has very little. Again, these are just a few of the more popular weight loss products. A lot or great products come in a combination form with one or more of the above supplements combined. Keep in mind that some of these herbs should not be taken along with other medications or if high blood pressure exists. Good luck with your weight loss program. A New Solution For Dry Mouth Syndrome By Michael Rehme, DDS, CCN (Certified Clinical Nutritionist)

S

everal months ago, I attended a biological dental convention. Several excellent speakers presented insightful information regarding heavy metals toxicities found in the oral cavity, chelation techniques for our patients, ozone therapies for dental applications, and biocompatibility testing for dental materials. But there was one lecture that really caught my attention. It was a new treatment solution for people suffering from dry mouth syndrome. Dry mouth is a condition associated with a change in the composition of saliva or a reduced salivary flow (hyposalivation) in the mouth. A conservative estimate is that about 20% of the general population is affected. This increases up to 30% occurrence in women and up to 50% incidence in the elderly population. What causes dry mouth? Other than the simple causes of dry mouth, such as snoring, dehydration and mouth breathing, there are three primary causes: medications, medical conditions and their treatments, and excessive anxiety or stress. Medications: This is the #1 cause of dry mouth. Over 500 medications produce Xerostomia (Dry Mouth) as a side effect. Medications used for depression, allergies, anxiety, high blood pressure and Parkinson’s disease are among the main offenders. Medical Conditions and their treatments: The number one disease that causes dry mouth is an autoimmune disease called Sjogren’s syndrome. This disease affects the moisture-producing glands in the mouth and eyes and results in severe dryness. Patients undergoing cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation near their head and/or neck, often experience trauma and damage to their salivary glands. Damage can become severe and cause burning mouth syndrome and create extreme sensitivity when consuming any food or beverage. Dry mouth is also associated with rheumatoid diseases, such as lupus, arthritis, and scleroderma. Other diseases that produce the side effect of dry mouth include AIDS, diabetes and Alzheimer’s. Dental Concerns: Dry mouth syndrome can produce devastating effects in the oral cavity. Without the proper salivation to lubricate the teeth and the periodontium (the specialized tissues that both surround and support the teeth), harmful bacteria will flourish in the mouth, creating an acidic environment. This increases your chances of developing a chronic condition of dental decay and periodontal disease for many years to come. New Solution: Other than carrying a bottle of water around with you 24/7, the only products available for dry

mouth syndrome have been oral lubricants that artificially moisten the mucosa and the soft tissue lining of the oral cavity. Most patients unfortunately complain that these products do not stimulate salivation but rather offers a slick or moist coating in the mouth that only lasts for a short period of time. But now there is a new, innovative product called Kaboom Xero Sticks. These “dental sticks” are toxin free and are infused with precise amounts of flavors, zero calorie sweeteners (xylitol), and a functional specific ingredient called spilanthes, that is clinically proven to stimulate and promote oral salivation. Since attending this dental conference, I’ve been offering my patients, who suffer from this problem, sample “dental sticks” to personally evaluate the results of this product. These flavored sticks have a mild bitter taste that can activate the salivation process for up to 3 to 4 hours per stick. Initially, I was quite skeptical about the claims being made by this product. However, after listening to my patients who used them, I can honestly report that approximately 75% of my dry mouth patients have experienced favorable results, i.e., increased salivation by simply using these dental sticks on a daily basis. Throughout my entire dental career, I have continued to see the worst dental problems, i.e., recurrent decay, gum inflammation, bone loss, and halitosis (bad breath) persist, simply due to dry mouth conditions. With more salivation, not only will your mouth feel more comfortable, but you will most likely save yourself from unnecessary dental bills from piling up in the future. The manufacturer of this new product has indicated that the Kaboom Xero Sticks will be available for sale only through professional health care offices beginning in January 2014. If you’re experiencing dry mouth syndrome, I would strongly advise you to consider this option because it’s simple, safe, and it could make a significant improvement in your dental health. If you would like more information or if you’re interested in trying this product, please feel free to call our office. We’ll be happy to assist you with your personal needs. Checks and Balances by Rosa Kincaid, M.D.

S

ometimes I can tell if a woman is having a “hormone problem” when she walks through the door. Often she will be crying in the waiting room or appear to be disheveled or “out of it”. The term “hormone imbalance,” usually conjures up images of old ladies with hot flashes and brittle bones. However, it can occur in any person of any age. Hormone imbalances in young women can cause: menstrual irregularities, fibroid tumors, mood swings, pre-menstrual syndrome, depression, weight gain, endometriosis, infertility and more. Very often these symptoms are overlooked as just being part of being a woman’s “emotional” make-up or something that runs in the family. But, a minimal check-up of the output of hormones from the: thyroid, adrenals and ovaries should be done. What are hormones? If you think of the brain as your hardware, hormones are the software. They are messengers from the brain that tell our major organs what to do. When they are all functioning correctly you have a happy, healthy and “well’” person. When they are imbalanced, it is like that malfunctioning fuel pump that can cause the entire engine to shut down or that one employee that is resistant to working with the team. These hormones work together. One hor-

mone that is misbehaving causes a cascade, like falling dominoes, that causes the entire being to not be at their best. So, these hormone “problems” are not agerelated and now young women are experiencing many of the symptoms of imbalance: acne, depression, abnormal spotting in between periods, absence of periods, breast masses, heavy bleeding, cramping, PMS, etc. The usual treatment is going to be birth control pills (although the person is not seeking contraception and may be only 12 yeas old), antibiotics, antidepressants or surgery. Most women or girls going through this usually have no idea of why they are having a problem. Instead of suppressing the symptoms of imbalance with pills it is important for women of all ages to understand what is really happening in the very complex, precise biochemistry of the female reproductive system. A sensitive system that responds to the moon, steroid infested meats, pesticides, stress and lack of adequate rest. Women of all ages need to have their hormones checked and balanced. Learn The Art of Beekeeping by Cassandra Hage, Beekeeper

F

ive years ago, I came across a flyer that would change my life. It promoted the idea of learning how to “make your own honey,” which I realize now is silly – the bees to all of the work! A blossoming DIY-er and urban homesteader, I saw the workshop as an opportunity to learn about something else I could add to the mix. I love honey and bees seemed pretty interesting, so why not get some information? So I registered, then showed up for the workshop. Little did I know, before I left, I would be committing myself to beekeeping, committing my parents to hosting two hives, and embarking on an interesting and rewarding hobby unlike any other! The Beekeepers Workshop was my introduction to the Eastern Missouri Beekeepers Association (EMBA). It’s composed of a 100% volunteer core of highly dedicated individuals who are passionate about promoting beekeeping and training the next generation of backyard beekeepers. EMBA hosts monthly meetings that offer networking opportunities, Q&A, and high-quality presentations about topics ranging from how to do a hive inspection to how to make lip balm with your beeswax. Members range from experienced commercial beekeepers with 30+ years of experience to “newbees” who are just figuring it out. In addition to monthly meetings, EMBA puts on an incredible annual workshop with sessions for beginners and sessions for experienced beekeepers. EMBA recruits nationally renowned honeybee scientists, professors, and beekeepers to train attendees on current best practices and share cutting-edge research. As a beginner at the workshop, I didn’t know what to expect, but was pleased to find that EMBA had a plan for me! Throughout the day, the presenters took us through the ins and outs of beekeeping, covering topics like honeybee biology and how to perform a hive inspection. They answered questions like: “How often will I get stung?” “How do I find the queen?”

“How much will it cost me to start a hive?” “When will I be able to harvest honey?” “How much time will it take to manage my hive?” By the time the day wrapped up, I had met beekeepers old and young, experienced and new, country dwellers and urbanites, commercial keepers and hobbyists – you name it! I also developed a fascination with these incredible creatures and a serious craving for honey. I was hooked! It wasn’t long until I had placed my order for two hives (because you can’t get just one, right?), beekeeping equipment, and my first two starter colonies through the club’s cooperative purchase option. I assembled the hive with help from some experienced keepers at the hive assembly workshop that followed in March. Soon, I was all set up and ready for the bees to arrive. When I picked them up at the delivery point, I stayed to watch the demonstration on how to get the bees from the package into the hive and get them situated in their new home. Every step of the way, volunteers from the EMBA served as resources and mentors. Five years and four hives later, I’ve harvest hundreds of pounds of honey, brewed hundreds of gallons of mead (honey wine), and even started to sell surplus honey on the side. The bees are a great fit for my small South St. Louis City yard alongside fruit trees and a vegetable garden. I love having honey year round to share with friends and family. Sound like something you could see yourself doing or want to “just get some information,” like me five years ago? Join us at the 7th Annual Beekeeping Workshop! It will change your life too! Here is all the information to get you started: Saturday, February 8th, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Maritz in Fenton, Missouri. Tuition: $75 through January 18, 2014, $90 January 19th - February 1st. Lunch and refreshments are included in the cost. Registration packets include course materials, an authoritative reference book, beekeeping periodicals, and equipment catalogs. The third annual Mardi Gras Banquet will be held on Friday, February 7th, featuring New Orleans style food and music, a cash bar, door prizes (including nucs, queens and beekeeping equipment) and a keynote speaker. Ffresh R E S H fare FARE Eating Healthy After The Holidays by Kari Hartel, RD, LD Program Coordinator, Cooking Matters, Operation Food Search

I

t’s that time of year again – everyone is trying to lose the inevitable holiday weight that lingers after the celebrations are over. Thanksgiving and the other holidays that follow are times of feasting and indulgence. If you want to get back to clean eating, there are some strategies that can help you get back to eating a lighter, healthier diet. Emphasize whole foods that are minimally processed. Whole fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole-grains should be the foundation of a healthy diet. Get back to proper portion sizes. We tend to overeat during the holidays and stretch our tummies to their limits. Use a smaller plate (a 9-inch plate instead of a 12-inch plate) and don’t go back for “seconds.” Fill half of your plate with fruits and vegetables, one-quarter with a lean protein and onequarter with a whole-grain item. Enjoy some low-fat or fat-free dairy on the side and you’ll have a wellbalanced meal. Stick with calorie-free beverages. During the holidays, we often celebrate with cocktails, wine, champagne and other “spiked” beverages. Although a libation can certainly liven up a party, alcohol provides a lot of empty calories. In fact, alcohol has more calories per gram than both protein and carbohydrates. Even if you didn’t drink any alcohol at family dinners and social gatherings, you may have indulged in some fruit punch or eggnog. These beverages are high in calories and sugar (and eggnog is also loaded with fat) and we tend to not feel as full

from ingesting liquid calories as we do from solid foods. Opt for water, unsweetened tea, coffee or other low-calorie beverages. Steer clear of sweets and desserts. Pumpkin and apple pies, homemade cookies, candy canes and chocolates—the holiday season never fails to provide us with a plethora of sweet treats. Sugary desserts and decadent confections are savored throughout the holiday season more frequently than any other time of year. Get back into your normal routine that doesn’t include as many sweets. Cut back on animal proteins. Thanksgiving, Christmas and other winter holiday meals focus on large portions of meats – turkey and ham being the most popular. A healthy meal should have vegetables as the primary focus, with meats being used as a flavor-enhancer rather than the main focus. Vegetables are naturally low in calories and fat, are chock-full of vitamins, minerals, fiber and diseasefighting antioxidants, and are generally free of preservatives and other unnecessary additives. Swap out those unhealthy fats—butter, lard, fullfat dairy and animal fats—for heart-happy unsaturated fats, including olive and canola oil, nuts, seeds, olives, avocado and fatty fish. Winter months can be particularly harsh – especially for people who don’t know where their next meal is coming from. If you haven’t made a New Year’s resolve, think about helping someone faced with the struggle of hunger and food insecurity. Please consider volunteering or making a donation to Operation Food Search. For every dollar donated, Operation Food Search can provide $22 of food and nutrition services to help nourish our neighbors in need. www.OperationFoodSearch.org

New YeAR’S ReSolutIoNS For You on Behalf of Your Pets

by Dr. Doug Pernikoff, DVM

W

e all look forward to the New Year, in hopes of making promises to ourselves, hopefully, to better our lives in one or more ways. Those are noble goals, indeed! But, even more noble and gracious, would be for us to honor our beloved pets by committing to those new year resolutions that will help to guarantee their health and well-being, too. Let’s look at some valuable goals for 2014 for our pets! Over 50% of our pets are considered to be overweight. No surprise, given that our human population is in even worse physical condition. The first pet resolution must be our promise to *feed our pets correctly, taking into consideration their present condition, their age, their breed and more; *as needed, we must commit to a regular exercise program for them. This action supports our human condition as well. And, certainly, discuss the type and degree of exercise you intend to initiate with your veterinarian, to be sure you are not about to do harm, in trying to help them. Commit to regular play time with your pets. This does not mean you have to spend 5 hours daily, as it is the quality, not the quantity of time that makes the difference. Find moments throughout your busy week for your critters. Even if you are simply playing catch; teasing with one or more of their favorite toys; or, just rolling around, petting, rubbing or play fighting. Most pets just love the attention. Regular grooming is a great way to commit to your pets. This can simply mean a regular combing or brushing at home. Be sure to keep control of those matts. Often skin conditions can occur below the coat surface. Note that when you bathe your pets, you must brush them out afterwards, or the kinking and matting will follow. As needed, depending on breed, or your own capabilities, it may prove easier to simply select a great groomer and initiate a regular schedule of bathing, brushing, or actual grooming. Discuss the needs of your pets with your selected groomers. Often, your veterinarian can direct you to a suitable groomer for your particular pet’s needs. Don’t forget to honor your pets with regular veterinary examinations, at least one annually, but two is even smarter. Why? Because in the course of 12 months, many bad things can evolve, especially as our pets age. The visit should always include a physical examination by your veterinarian; appropriate blood, urine, and fecal examinations, not unlike the sort of exam you expect from your own doctors to ensure your own human well-being. The level of diagnostic sophistication in veterinary medicine has exponentially improved over the past decade. It is not unusual for your vet to have ultrasound, digital radiography, complete in house blood diagnostics, and any number of specialists to refer you to, as needed, when needed. Take advantage of these expanded skill sets to be sure you offer your pet the greatest and bestest in health care. The result is that your pets live longer and health-

ier lives for themselves and for you, as their pet owners. Keep your household safe and free from dangerous scenarios that can entangle your pets into life threatening episodes. Keep poisons, cleansers, fertlizers and other chemicals secured away in the garage or basement, inaccessible to our mischievious and exploring pets. Remember that anti-freeze introduced pre-winter, and removed from our cars in the spring, is especially toxic to our animals. It tastes sweet, and thereby, is attractive to their taste buds. The trash can harbors all sorts of tasty morsels that by volume, may cause an emergency bloating in dogs; or, by food type, say chocolate foodstuffs, grapes, onion and more, can all prove very toxic if ingested by Fido or Felix. Be logical. Protect your pets as you protect your kids. That’s the best rule to follow. This is a good start for 2014. If you can all promise to commit to these few actions, we are all on our way to a safe and healthy pet New Year. Talk to your veterinarian and learn more about other actions you might commit to this year. Make it a personal challenge to do the best you can for those special family members, our four-legged buddies. Have a great New Year. Full of new dreams and a healthy, loving life. Include Your Pets in New Year Resolutions Dr. Ava Frick, DVM, CAC

T

he top New Year resolutions for people include losing weight and exercising more. Statistic and surveys have shown that people who exercise with their pets will stick to a program more successfully than if they are doing it for themselves alone. Obesity is the most commonly recognized nutritional problem in dogs. Obesity is defined as a body weight that is greater than 20% above optimal body weight. It is predominantly caused by over-consumption of calories, under-expenditure of energy, and improper nutrient balance (more carbohydrates in relation to the protein). There is a common belief that protein restriction is helpful in older animals, yet no scientific evidence shows that reduced dietary protein is beneficial for the healthy older dog or cat. In fact, reduced protein diets for older pets may have adverse effects by contributing to the muscle loss that occurs with aging. Risk factors for gaining excessive weight include neutering, mid to older age, inactivity, indoor lifestyle, and genetic predisposition. Obese animals, like people, usually show signs of concurrent disease: lameness, increased drinking and urinating, increased respiratory effort or panting, sleeping more, poor skin and coat, and heart stress with circulatory malfunction. For a dog that already has difficulty getting around, creating an exercise program can be challenging. The last thing we want is to increase pain. A well planned weight-loss program includes a patient-specific nutritional therapy of reducing typical cereals or grains like wheat, corn, gluten, and rice, balancing protein, fat, complex carbohydrates, fiber, and water. Address needs of the endocrine system to create optimal metabolism helps the body adapt and change. Initiate a home exercise routine, which for some may be gentle massage, range of motion, frequent but very short walks, and exercises using a ball. Balls are great for older pets and ones that have difficulty holding up their weight or tend to lie down rather than stand. It is a support that allows them some independence as they regain function. For those with medical considerations or where the weather interferes with exercise, use a facility with physical rehabilitation technology, such as the underwater treadmill. Water walking allows for less weight and body mass on the legs, more flexion of the joints, buoyancy, better body balance, and an almost massagelike effect on the legs. At higher levels it can be a car-

diovascular exercise that improves conditioning, muscle tone, and overall wellbeing. To successfully manage a weight reduction plan for your dog or cat, you should: Feed a balanced grain-free diet. (For insightful information from a veterinarian regarding the effects of diet read www.dogtorj.com.) Feed alone, away from other animals to reduce the incentive to eat fast. You may choose to put the food in a muffin pan to further slow him/her down. Feed only the snacks or treats outlined in the balanced program. Best to choose from whole food items like dehydrated meat and vegetables. Avoid eating in front of your dog when he/she will not be getting anything. Exercise your dog or cat as prescribed. Keep a journal of distance and/or time spent. Weigh in every two weeks and record body weight. Have a weight-loss reassessment done starting monthly then working up to every 3 months as the program successfully progresses. This will include weight, pelvic and thoracic circumference measurements, nutrition adjustments, exercise evaluation, and behavioral improvements. A better lifestyle and exercise is the best chance for a longer life. Substantial research progress is deepening our understanding of obesity and the aging process, leading veterinarians and pet owners toward better guidelines including nutritional interventions and lifestyle decision that will promote healthy longevity. Considering the fact that the obesity rates of pets has climbed right along with their human counterpart seems the thing to do is get everybody in the house eating better (healthier) and exercising more. ith the start of a new year comes the chance to start fresh, to try new things, to make changes in one’s life. Let ART be the vehicle to bring that innovative approach to your new year. Here are a few suggestions to get you started: I’m old enough to remember when the “Wizard of Oz” was a once-a-year television treat. The neighbor kids would come over and we’d crowd around the television, eagerly waiting to be awed by Glinda the beautiful Good Witch and the vibrant colors of Oz, to be frightened by the Wicked Witch of the West and her flying monkeys, and to sing along with the Munchkins about the yellow brick road. It was thrilling. Just last month, while at the Smithsonian Institute’s Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., I was reminded of this movie’s place in the collective American psyche as crowds thronged around a case displaying “the” ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in the film. Although things have changed quite a bit since that time, this month brings the opportunity to relive that delightful American fairytale in a charmingly different manner: live, through dance. Choreographed by Ballet Memphis’ choreographic associate Steven McMahon, Dorothy wears red pointe shoes as she and her trio of friends—the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Lion—journey down the yellow brick road to the Emerald City, each in search of something different: a heart, a brain, courage and the chance to return home. Look for all the favorites, including Munchkin played by 20 local dancers from COCA. The traditional Oz costumes—Dorothy’s blue gingham dress and Glinda’s sparkling pink gown—plus music by British composers Gustav Holst, Benjamin Britten and Ralph Vaughn Williams, the beautiful, fresh and heartwarming ballet captures and exudes the true magic of Wizard of Oz, January 24-25 at the Touhill Center for Performing Arts on UMSL’s campus. Ballet Memphis is recognized as one of the most groundbreaking small dance companies in America. This is a performance not to be missed! Thanks to Dance St. Louis for bringing such innovative performances to St. Louis. For details, visit www.dancestlouis.org. but hurry----these performances will sell out quickly. You’ll also want to also snag tickets for January 25’s performance of the Festival of Four. Returning to St. Louis for a fifth time, for one night only, these awesome musicians are beloved around the world for their joyful playing of folk and traditional music of

many countries, performed on a variety of flutes and fretted instruments from around the world. Chileanborn flutist Viviana Guzman studied with both James Galway and Jean-Pierre Rampal, plus performed with Mikhail Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance Project. Hailing from the Czech Republic, Radim Zenkl is truly one of the world's premier mandolin virtuosos, winner of the U.S. National Mandolin Championship in 1992. Flamenco guitar virtuoso Guillermo Rios, a student of the legendary Sabicas, spent seventeen years performing and touring throughout the world with Spain's leading flamenco artists. Last but certainly not least, classical guitarist Richard Patterson is a featured performer on over twenty recordings, cumulatively has sold over 1,000,000 copies. Countryside Montessori School

ountryside Montessori School is dedicated to the education of the whole child. Our goal is to meet each individual child’s need for intellectual, physical, social and emotional development. Our learning environment is designed to cultivate independence, individual responsibility, freedom of choice, concentration, problem-solving abilities, social interaction, competency in basic skills and a love of learning. By offering a superb Montessori education in a nurturing environment, Countryside strives to help children reach their full potential and become independent, life long learners. The Montessori method of education was created by Dr. Maria Montessori, Italy’s first woman physician. Early in the 20th century, Dr. Montessori developed her educational concepts and tested them at a center in Rome. Dr. Montessori cherished the uniqueness of each child and discovered that children learn best within environments that support individual development. She found that when children are in a home-like setting filled with developmentally appropriate materials, they become independent self-motivated learners. The Primary goal of a Montessori program is to help each child reach his or her full potential. The “whole child” approach taken by Dr. Maria Montessori fosters growth in all areas because the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive needs of a child are seen as inseparable. This approach encourages joy of learning and development of self-esteem. Current Preschool Openings. 12226 Ladue Road, (314) 434-2821 Creve Coeur, MO 63141 • www.montessori4children.com

The Garden In Winter By Cindy Gilberg

Linda Wiggen Kraft • Green & Growing Editor

Seeds Of A Dream Garden by Linda Wiggen Kraft

I

n January gardeners begin to feel the pull of springtime and summer gardening. Dreams of the upcoming gardening season start when seed catalogs arrive in the mailbox or email inbox. The photos and descriptions pull at the heart and plant themselves in the visions of the soon-to-be here gardening season. I like to spend a day or two immersed in the seed catalog ritual of sitting by the fireplace, snuggled in a blanket, sipping hot tea while looking through catalogs and going online to see each plant’s photo delights. My body is in its winter wrap, while my head is in the summer sun. There are seeds that are sold every year, seeing their photos is like finding old friends in a crowd. There are the new stars, given first page billing. And sometimes, old favorites are nowhere to be found. This several day indulgence ends when I have to get down to the business of what will really work for my garden, considering space, time and money. As an aide in making choices, I created an excel spreadsheet that lists seeds I want, where they come from, how many in a package, cost and code number. The look of a spreadsheet sobers me from the drunkenness of wanting it all. For most gardeners a simple list on paper will do. Over the years favorite catalogs have emerged. Companies that sell organically grown and heirloom seeds are top of the list, especially ones owned or controlled by founders and others with a dedication to organics and sustainability. Catalogs meeting those criteria are: Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, Seed Saver

Exchange, High Mowing Organic Seeds, Johnny’s Select Seeds, Territorial Seeds and Renee’s Garden. Missouri’s own Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds has more varieties of vegetable seeds than anyone else. Their catalog offers over 1400 kinds. Along with cool weather plantings of peas, beets, swiss chard, spinach, lettuce and arugula; I planted beans, tomatoes and flowers. Last summer purple-podded pole beans grew on a twig trellis in my front garden alongside ornamental flowers. The purple beans pods from lavender flowers looked great in the front yard. The Chadwick Cherry tomatoes grew on my back deck. Mother of Pearl poppies and Pink Senorita zinnias bloomed in the flowerbeds. As for zinnias, I can’t live without them. But I want certain colors not found in mixes. The apricot or salmon colored Benary Giants come from Johnny’s Seeds or Renee’s Garden. The number one favorite flower from seed is Queen Lime Red zinnia, with multicolored subtly shaded lime green and dusty rose. It’s found at Territorial Seeds. There are other seeds that I grow and way more that I want. Perhaps this year I will try a few new ones. As I gaze outside now at the white snow, I can dream the colors of blooming flowers and green foliage, knowing that those dreams are the first step in planting the seeds of what will soon be a real garden. inter is a time for both looking at the year past and towards the new year. As the leaves and temperature drop, a whole new appearance to the landscape is revealed. Take advantage of this time to reflect on the garden in winter—is it visually exciting? Does it have color and interesting forms? Are there still great views? Many gardens are designed for the warmer seasons with flowers and foliage in mind. The essence of a great garden is one with year-round structure and interest. Adding winter interest is as easy as including plants that have one or more of the following attributes: attractive dried foliage and seed heads, winter berries/fruit, appealing branching patterns, or interesting bark. Some of these features are desirable to overwintering birds that add even more interest, color and animation to the winter scene. In the fall, don’t be so tidy in the garden in the fall. Rather than cutting down all the grasses and perennials, just let them be. Coneflowers (Rudbeckia and Echinacea), asters, goldenrods, Iris, late-blooming blazingstars (Liatris) and grasses have seed heads that attract birds, that snow settles on, or that have intriguing structure. To attract as many birds as possible, use Missouri native plants since these creatures evolved with and depend upon these plants for food and shelter. A few native plants are evergreen, a color often missed in winter months. American holly is the most obvious that comes to mind with its thick glossy green leaves that provide a great foil for its brilliant red berries. Be sure to plant one male holly amongst the female (berry-producing) plants to ensure that you have a good crop of red berries. Another evergreen native plant is our native cedar (Juniperus virginiana). It is extremely hardy and bears frosted blue berries that make a favorite snack for flocks of cedar waxwing birds. In warmer winters, native sweet bay Magnolia is another one with large, semi-evergreen leaves. The taller evergreen shrubs and trees provide much needed shelter in winter for birds and other small animals. Some low-growing perennials also remain evergreen. This includes Christmas fern, some short sedges (Carex eburnea, C. albicans) and alum

root (Heuchera). Intersperse these evergreen native plants in the landscape to provide contrast and add green to the garden. Berries are not only colorful but attract many birds that come to feast. Winterberry and deciduous holly, (Ilex verticillata and I. decidua) are a great example. After the leaves drop, bright showy red fruit becomes the obvious feature. Winterberry is a large shrub and deciduous holly is a small tree. American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) has exquisite purplish berries that color up in fall and persist through December. Though not a favorite of birds, I have seen quite a few birds that eventually take advantage of this food source. Looking out my window in December I still see red berries on the flowering dogwood—perhaps the birds have yet to discover it. Dogwoods have great branching patterns and beautiful spring flowers, making them a good multi-season plant. Limb-up small, multi-trunk trees to reveal interesting trunk and branch patterns and install an upward-facing light to appreciate these patterns after dark. Snow falling accumulates on branches, outlining and accentuating them in a way that only Nature can. One great small tree is vernal witch hazel (Hamemalis vernalis). It has great form but the most exciting aspect is that it blooms with fragrant yellow flowers in late January-February—a real treat after months of short days and cold temperatures. So don’t think of winter as down-time in the garden—think about how to create fantastic views, new plants to add or a feature that will add intrigue to the scene. Curl up with a hot cup of tea, look out your window, watch the snow fall and see the birds come and go. Enjoy the fourth season—winter. Should Our Trade Policy Ensure Greed Trumps Good?

A

new trade agreement that has been negotiated in secret for seven years called the Trans Pacific Partnership or TPP began to emerge out of the shadows last month. The few, leaked portions of the TPP have enraged citizens across the planet because of the power it removes from citizens and their governments and gives to private corporations. Trade negotiators representing more than 600 corporations have also pushed for “fast track” authority which would gut Congress’ ability to read the provisions of the agreement – and force them to vote on it without knowing its contents. In order to offer a proper explanation and context of the TPP, we need to review our U.S. history which is marked by tension over the role and power of corporations. Thomas Jefferson and James Madison were among the Founding Fathers who believed that corporations (especially monopolies) and concentrated wealth were a danger to democracy. Notably, the U.S. Constitution makes no mention of corporations. U.S. Corporations are “Humanized” and “SuperSized” For decades, states regulated corporations and retained the rights to ensure corporations served the public good. Then the tide turned. Before the Civil War Abraham Lincoln worked for railroads claiming they were “persons” in an 1850 lawsuit. During the war President Lincoln signed laws that granted corporations near monopolistic power and land grants that led to a massive geographic expansion of railroads and their political power. By late 1864 Lincoln offered the following sobering thoughts in a letter to a friend: “I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. As a result of the war, corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed. I feel at this moment more anxiety than ever before, even in the midst of the war. God grant that my suspicions may prove groundless." Corporations then filed numerous lawsuits pursing what has become known as “corporate personhood”, the formal and legal establishment of corporations being equal in the law to human beings. Corporations have since gained First, Fourth, and Fifth Amendment rights in the courts, rendering corporations in some people’s opinion, “super humans” because they can live indefinitely, can merge or split, cannot be jailed, and have immense financial power. After World War II, the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and later the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) were established. GATT,

which would become the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1995, is the foundation and precursor for TPP. By 1999 a growing movement opposing the WTO and globalization had spawned protests at many of the WTO and trade-related meetings. Protests in Seattle in 1999 caused the meeting held there to collapse. On the ten-year anniversary of the Seattle protests the Guardian newspaper published Protesters in Seattle warned us what was coming, but we didn't listen, which reminded us that the protests had been about: “a highly volatile financial system built on unsustainable levels of debt,” globalization, which “benefited only a small proportion of the global population,”corporate power that was “corrupting political systems that were unable to fight back or were co-opted by corporations,” the “economic system of global capitalism, which was destructive of the environment (while) burning through finite resources at ever faster speed”. These warnings can be traced to a key provision of the 2000-page document creating the WTO which elevates the trade agreements above a nation’s laws. The agreements allow a WTO member to challenge any law of another country that is believed to deprive a corporation of expected benefits from trade. It directly attacks sovereignty regarding labor, financial, environmental, health and safety standards that exceed the WTO accepted standards. Challenges have included standards on toxic chemicals, hydraulic fracturing, timber, mining, and green jobs. They have challenged the Clean Air Act, the Endangered Species Act, and renewable energy programs. What has become apparent is that free trade is really code for monopolistic protectionism that enriches corporations, undermines sovereign laws, and shifts jobs to lower wage countries. If you have not already done so, you might want to call your Congressional Representative and Senators asking them to oppose the TPP. The BioMat’s quantum energetics allows the body to fight disease and heal with a naturally strong and efficient immune system. It is composed of 17 layers of technology, combining Far Infrared Rays (FIR), negative ions and amethyst crystals. Time spent on the mat relieves pain and joint stiffness, reduces stress and fatigue, boosts the immune system, burns calories and many other healthful benefits. Infrared Rays, nature’s invisible light and most

beneficial light wave, penetrate skin and increase circulation to detoxify the body of harmful toxins. The FIR can increase blood flow and clean the arteries (which means it can help lower blood pressure), release toxins, increase metabolism, heal soft tissue and relax muscles. Negative Ions are Nature’s Energizer. Ion particles cleanse and purify the air we breathe. Amethyst bolsters the production of the hormones

and strengthens the cleansing organs, the circulatory system and blood, the immune system and body metabolism. Be proactive about your health and well being. A good nights sleep on the BioMat or a mere 30 minute nap, can go a long way to ensuring a healthier, happier you. Our approach to holistic health includes the entire body and the oral cavity is no exception. We are dedicated to serving our patients and promoting a level of health care that carefully evaluates and reviews the use of dental materials, dental procedures and also offers dietary and nutritional support for each and every individual that is seen in our office.

Did you know that examining the mouth can reveal the presence of illnesses or unstable conditions in other areas of the body? If you feel like you’ve just about exhausted all your options in your search for better health, have your mouth examined with a different approach in mind. Get motivated, get educated, and get ready to participate in a

health-oriented lifestyle that will provide dental alternatives and a nutritional foundation designed to help support your own body’s healing powers.

The focus of holistic dentistry is to consider the mouth as a part of the whole body. We use materials and methods that are more compatible biologically with the body instead of the traditional dental materials. Examples of non-compatible materials are mercury fillings, non-precious heavy metal crowns, bridges and partials or dentures. Alternatives to fluoride are used

for the prevention of cavities. Proper alignment of the jaws and teeth are the foundation of how the body perceives itself in space. The result of improper alignment can result in symptoms of headache, ears ringing, loss of hearing, pain in the head and neck and clenching or grinding of the teeth. Good nutrition is inseparable for good

health. If your diet consists of food and drink made with white flour, sugar and no fresh fruits and vegetables, your body is likely to be acidic with resultant more medical and dental problems. For your dental evaluation contact our office for an appointment by calling 636-4589090 or email at cherryhillsdds@yahoo.com.

New In St. Louis!

Hypnosis is Natural, Safe and Powerful!

It is the original mind/body medicine. Hypnosis is non-invasive (nothing gets inserted into your body), it is not a drug (therefore no side effects), it is a powerful tool that you can learn to use to accomplish your goals. How does it work? People can lose weight and quit smoking, they do it daily! However, the problem is maintaining this result without a relapse to old behaviors that cause weight gain or smoking. At Personal Motivation Hypnosis Clinic, Clinical Director, William Mitchell uses the natural power of the unconscious mind to help people change habits long term. Our method of Clinical Hypnosis is designed to eliminate unwanted cravings, break compulsive eating habits, reduce your craving for sweets, and self-motivate the individual to exercise. Will it work for me? With our method, you are aware and always in control. You’ll feel refreshed, relaxed and calm. No pills, surgery, or side effects with our method. Regardless of your past experience, you can lose 15, 30, 50 pounds or more safely and quickly.
