T
he New Year brings many reflections and resolutions. We take a look at ourselves and the way we live our lives and perform a self critique of how we are managing things. For the most part, our lives are usually much better than we give ourselves credit for. Just as the media mostly reports the bad news, we somehow mostly remember the bad things that happen in our lives. Why don’t the good things stick in our minds and hearts like the bad things? I am sure there is some clinical psychological reason for this. I want to challenge everyone reading this magazine to create a new reality. One that puts more emphasis on the positive and let’s let negative thoughts and events roll off our backs more. Sure we can learn by mistakes, but personal errors and occasional setbacks don’t have to become scars on our psyche or haunting tattoos on our memories. Sometimes I feel like the only things people talk about are what bothers them, hurts them, or drives them crazy. What about mentioning your favorites, your hopes and your simple pleasures at the next cocktail party. And maybe you would feel better about your life if you perform a random act of kindness each and every day. Do someone a favor without being asked. Pick up a piece of trash, open a door for someone, or just smile at the next person you see. When you are in a bad mood, go ahead and cry or shout or spend a little time to
be kept free from any other text or graphics to ensure the signature stands out in any environment.

January, 2015 yourself and let it take its course. We all get down in the dumps from time to time. But don’t let it snowball. Anxiety and depression can be thought of as temporary pests if you decide to control them. And if you find you are having too much trouble with these pests, talk to someone, professional, friend or family member. And remember, older people really do have some wisdom that you may not have. Mom and Dad, Grampy and Grandma have been around the block and probably have been down the rabbit hole a few times, and have found ways to climb back out. There is plenty in this world to depress us each and every day if we let it. Most of that is totally out of our control. You need to worry about what affects you directly, today and tomorrow. Develop a positive plan. Manage your stress. Laugh sometimes when you feel like crying and change up the moment. Give someone a hug. Do something fun for yourself. Take some time to think. Put down the smart phone. Turn off the electronics for a minute and listen to the wind. Watch the snow fall. Feel the cool breeze or the warm fire. Cozy up with a good book. Look through the photo album. Start that new project. Nothing feels better than accomplishing something. Or better yet, helping someone else accomplish something. Volunteer. Help your elderly neighbor. Read to a child. The thing is, everyone needs a purpose. Every day you should remember the good things that happened to you., or the things you did for someone else. Accomplish something. Make a contribution of effort. Let go of what always bugs you. Rid yourself of the negative people and things in your life. If someone can’t make you smile, send them packing. If you can subscribe to this “positive mindfulness”, it could snowball and spread to others. Maybe, just maybe, we could create our own “hope and change” instead of waiting for someone else to do it for us. Don’t be a passenger all your life, pilot your own plane. In Good Health,

Discover Nature With Missouri Department of Conservation Eagle Days Join wildlife watchers around the state to view our nation’s symbol in action.
T
hrough February, Missouri's winter eagle watching is spectacular. Discover nature with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) through Eagle Days events around the state, or enjoy eagleviewing on your own. Because of its big rivers, many lakes and expansive wetlands, Missouri is one of the leading lower 48 states for bald eagle viewing. Each fall, thousands of these great birds migrate south from their nesting range in Canada and the Great Lakes states to hunt in the Show-Me State. Eagles take up residence wherever they find open water and plentiful food. More than 2,000 bald eagles are typically reported in Missouri during winter. MDC offers Eagle Days events on the dates and locations listed. The events include live captive-eagle programs, exhibits, activities, videos, and guides with spotting scopes. Watch for eagles perched in large trees along the water’s edge. View them early in the morning to see eagles flying and fishing. Be sure to dress for winter weather and don’t forget cameras and binoculars. • Jan. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Jan. 11 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Smithville Lake Paradise Pointe Golf Course Clubhouse north of Kansas City. MAke A vIsIon BoArd A Vision Board is a visual representation of what you want to achieve. It works by shifting the energy you are sending out around your intentions. To make the board, you will need a poster board, pictures and glue. Go through magazines and pull lots of pictures. Select the ones you intuitively want and lay them on the board, then glue them on. Some people hang their boards, so they can see them often; others put them away and pull them out a year later to see what manifested. The intentions on the board are strong; this is a great way to manifest change. deborah Zorensky, rd, ld, ccn, the center for Mind, Body & spirit 7649 delmar, 314.725.6767

Vary the type of proteins offered so all amino acids are available. Research shows that 94% of dogs are calcium and magnesium deficient and 97% have inflammation, needing zinc to resolve symptoms. Adding these minerals can be beneficial for weak ligaments, mental nervousness or excitability. A gentle stretching ear massage can go a long way to calm the “beast” within. FocusIng on posItIve goAls For the new YeAr Well, its that time of year again when people all over the world start setting their new years resolutions. And, that’s always a good thing! By far, the most popular of all resolutions is losing weight and getting healthy. In 2015, Focus on Positive Goals with your diet, rather than deprivation. All too many people focus on “I’m not eating this”, “I’m giving up that”, “No more of this”, etc. when they start changing their dietary habits. Instead, focus your dietary goals around eating more of what your body
needs: Lots of Lean proteins, Fruits, Vegetables, and Water! Focus on getting good stuff in, not so much on “keeping the bad stuff out.” dr. Adam hughes kingen chiropractic wellness center www.kingenchiropractic.com www.drAdamhughes.com

Aromatherapy can change your mood, lift your spirits or totally relax you. Depending on the type of stress you are experiencing, you may want to try one of the following blends: For tension, lavender and orange are good choices. For anxiety, you may want to try cedar and ylang-ylang. For irritability or anger, try bergamot and chamomile. For relaxation or sleeplessness, lavender is the best. There are a variety of ways to use the oils, either by diffusing, in a bath, a sachet or just simply sniffing. suCCEssFul rEsoluTions Why is it hard for most of us to maintain our new- year resolutions? Most resolutions require us to make lifestyle changes - and this requires effort. Last week I saw a movie called AWAKE. It was based on an autobiographical life of a yogi. I was impressed when he said,” To make any change, we have to exercise willpower.” To exercise willpower, one simple strategy is to start your goal slowly and gradually, increase as you experience consistency with adherence to your plan. Your will and determination are absolutely necessary in order to succeed – so choose your resolutions wisely. Varsha rathod M.d. www.preventivemedicinestl.com

wE nEEd synErGy, CoopEraTion and EMpaTHy Let's consider the most prevalent and debilitating disease in St. Louis. It is most often an under or undiagnosed condition which when untreated, is left to grow like cancer. There are no specific labs nor advanced radiological modalities to order. There is no known surgical procedure that cures. It is often diagnosed empirically; by observing symptomatic behavior, or by getting a good history on the patient. This disease is RACISM. There is no way to heal this city through perpetual denial. It is here. It lives here. Well what can we do about it? What happens to our ailing heartland depends on all of us. We need all of our vital organs working together. We need synergy, cooperation and empathy for each other. SWITCH TO ALL-NATURAL BODYCARE PRODUCTS Think baby steps as you work to replace your personal care routine with more natural skincare and body products. Sometimes one is overwhelmed with the thought of throwing out all of one’s toiletries and replacing everything with more natural products. Instead of taking on such an overwhelming task, think in terms of one body area at a time. Maybe you can start with your shower soap or wash, and replace it with a natural castile (olive oil) base bath bar. Once you’ve gotten comfortable with that change, move on to a natural product body scrub or a talc free body powder. If you think in terms of one thing at a time, you’re more likely to make the change and feel better about your New Year’s resolution to go all natural! Karma-Naturals, www.karma-naturals.com 126 S. get back on the healthy eating track The holidays are over and we all probably indulged in way too many scrumptious sweets and treats. To get back on track with your healthy eating habits, keep things simple and aim to fill at least half of your plate with fruits and vegetables, a quarter with a lean protein (think grilled salmon or beans), and a quarter with whole grains (brown rice or barley are excellent, fiberfilled options). A glass of skim milk or a serving of reduced-fat cheese completes this meal. Following MyPlate when preparing your meals ensures that you are getting the proper portions of all of the five food groups.” kari hartel, rD, lD Program coordinator, cooking Matters, operation Food Search Phone: 314.726.5355 ext. 22 www.operationFoodSearch.org

intentional MealS Honor your meals and the digestion process. It’s common to snack all day, never enjoying proper meals. Instead, plan for mindful meals without distractions. Before eating take moments to enjoy the sights and sounds of your meal. Chew your food well as nutrients are better absorbed when properly broken down. Minimize liquids with meals because they can dilute digestive enzymes, demanding more enzyme production and slowing digestion. End meals with naturally sweet fruits and try eating until no longer hungry, instead of until you are stuffed. Practicing intentional meals becomes a healthy ritual and helps you avoid overeating. BE PRoAcTIvE! I like the word proactive because it is very positive. I thought about titling this" How to avoid procrastination," but even the word seems mired in guilt, accusatory. The root word crastinus( Latin) literally means "belonging to tomorrow." So what are the benefits of becomingproactive, the art of initiating change and being prepared for tomorrow, today? Peace of mind, a feeling of strength and purpose, and a healthy feeling. Delaying the inevitable might feel like an easy choice, however it makes you feel weak, useless, and helpless. your sleeping position Waking up with lots of pain? Your sleeping position may be to blame. Sleeping on your back is best and puts the least amount of pressure on your lower back. Side sleeper? Place a pillow between your legs And keep your kneecaps aligned. This prevents over rotating your hips, which leads to pelvic imbalance. If one leg is longer than the other while lying on your back, chances are your pelvis is misaligned. Sorry stomach sleepers, but it’s the worst position for low back sufferers and adds almost seven times the amount of pressure to your lumbar spine, compared to back sleeping. dr. neW year resolutions Most New Year’s resolutions deal with weight loss or working out to get healthy. Begun with good intentions, yet soon forgotten. How can we break this cycle? struCtural integration and standing Why is standing important? You can be relaxed and keep strains off of your body with good posture. Some of us have challenges with our necks and backs, much of this is related to how we stand. To improve your posture start with your knees at ease. They should be straight but not locked. Then check-in where the weight is in your feet. It should be balanced front to back and side to side. With this as your starting point, practice it and see what what your changes are throughout your day. Changing the alignment of the feet is part of this process and relates to walking and running.. To change the position of the feet can take time as the patterns that are holding them need to be changed slowly otherwise the body will compensate and a new pattern is created that overpowers the older. That expends a lot of extra energy. 314-489-3064 sally@rolfstl.com or 314-771-8730 alan@rolfstl.com www.rolfstl.com.

tHinK about setting a neW type of resolution. Far too many people adopt resolutions around the same stale goals (weight loss, money and exercise), year after year, only to end up feeling like a failure yet again. This year make a resolution to shed yourself of the limiting labels that are responsible for your seeming inability to move forward and accomplish your goals. “I’m too fat‌I’m no good with money‌I’m unlovable‌I’m not a good enough parent‌I can’t pick good partners‌.I have depression, etc.â€? Soon you believe the labels, begin to
feel limited in what you can actually accomplish and there the evolution of the self-fulfilling prophecy begins. This New Year make a decision to end your self-defeating narrative, so you can remove the selfimposed roadblocks and see just how far you can go. ³,WœV Not Just Calories That Make Bellies )DW ´ Dr. Raj Banerjee, DC Dr %DQHUMHHœV Wellness Centre 314-282-3990 GetLeanToday.com Dear Seeker of Health & Fitness, Have you had any of these in your life? Injury, pain, surgery, infection, illness, divorce, financial stress, job stress, poison ivy, giving birth, irritable people, starvation diets, the menstrual cycle, eating junk foods, drugs and medication, excessive cold or heat, staring into computer monitors, and babysitting 15 small children under the age of five for over 13 hours²these are all examples of physical, mental and emotional stress. Your walnut-sized adrenal glands, which sit on top of your kidneys, cannot distinguish among the various stresses that are present in your life²whether they are physical, mental, or emotional. These glands just pump out hormones to counteract stress²any stress! They are ³ILJKW or IOLJKW´ hormones intended to serve us for short periods only. But WRGD\œV stresses are anything but short term so the hormones just keep flowing! If this persists, you can become an ³DGUHQDO W\SH´ of person²one who has either overactive or exhausted adrenals. This is very serious business because your quality of life depends so greatly upon how well your adrenal glands work. Visible symptoms come along with persistent adrenal imbalances. Chief among them is hanging fat in the midsection that sags downward over the belly. Thinned-out arms, legs and buttocks generally accompany this fat because the key hormone that prevails during stress (cortisol) converts these muscles
to sugar in an attempt to create more energy for a continually stressed body. With thinned muscles and large abdomen, adrenal types often have a hard time finding clothes that fit. Moreover, stress hormones in excess will steal protein from the bones, leading to osteoporosis. Sometimes a fat pad develops in the lower neck and upper back called a ³EXIIDOR KXPS ´ Further, fat accumulation in the face gives a round or ³PRRQ IDFH´ appearance, a face that may redden because of weakened blood vessels. So why does the extra fat appear? With all this sugar poring into the bloodstream through the action of stressfighting hormones, the fat-burning hormones of the liver get turned off. Not even high-protein or low-calorie diets will turn them back on again! Then fat accumulates on the belly because of the excess sugar thrown into the blood to meet ³GDQJHUV´ that GRQœW exist (and insulin stores the sugar as fat to keep your blood sugar levels normal). In other words, stress hormones prevent fat burning, and counting calories or eating more protein simply will n ot help. To make matters worse, some adrenal types will try to work off fat with heavy exercise. But this just creates more stress and more stress hormones. Result? Less muscle and even more fat! What a predicament. Fortunately, adrenal imbalances can be corrected to turn muscle-burning adrenal types into fat burners again. But WKDWœV only part of the adrenal story. Exhausted adrenals can run out of anti-inflammatory hormones and enter a chronic stage where pain and inflammation stay in the body for years (e.g., fibromyalgia). Sore muscles GRQœW seem to recover after exercise. Pain triggers stress hormones, which turns off fat burning. A deep, restful sleep becomes impossible. Constant fatigue, mid-
afternoon drowsiness, and brain fog or dullness prevail. Caffeine beverages become a constant sidekick, doing yet more damage to the already exhausted adrenals! If you think you might be an ³DGUHQDO W\SH ´ WKHUHœV a whole lot more I can tell you about it (and how to get healthy again) at my one-hour ³EHOO\ IDW´ talk, Saturday morning, at my Wellness Centre in Clayton just off 170 and Ladue. Since attending Dr. %DQHUMHHœV weight-loss program, friends have commented that my body is looking tighter and I have much more muscle definition. I have fewer food cravings, GRQœW depend on coffee, and have to say that I enjoy the compliments I get. Thank you so much Dr. %DQHUMHH ´ ¹Miranda G, Edwardsville IL

Indoor Air Quality & Mattresses
M
attress chemicals can adversely affect indoor air pollution. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has written extensively about indoor air pollution. Visit www.epa.gov, and you’ll find a section dedicated solely to concerns about what we’re breathing indoors. Much of this material was produced in collaboration with the Consumer Product Safety Commission. According to the EPA, there are three ways to approach the problem: • Source control. “The most effective way to improve indoor air quality is to eliminate individual sources of pollution or to reduce their emissions.â€? • Ventilation. â€œâ€Śincrease the amount of outdoor air coming indoors.â€? • Air cleaners. “Some air cleaners are highly effective at particle removal, while others, including most table-top models, are much less so. Air cleaners are generally not designed to remove gaseous pollutants.â€? Indoor air pollution sources include: • Radon • Tobacco smoke • Biological contaminants, including: bacteria, molds, mildew, viruses, animal dander and cat saliva, house dust mites, cockroaches, and pollen • Gas stoves and fireplaces and chimneys—carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide gases • Paints, varnishes, waxes, glues • Formaldehyde • Asbestos Breathing While You Sleep Some household toxins, such as strong cleaning products, release pollutants during their use that linger and eventually dissipate. But indoor air pollution from other sources, including furnishings and upholstery, is released more or less continuously, the EPA states. Although there is no specific mention of mattresses, consider adding these facts to your thinking about your home’s air quality: Synthetic chemicals, many of which are volatile compounds, are used in large quantities in the production of most mattresses. A sleeper has full-body contact with a mattress and pillow for eight hours on average every day. It just makes sense that a synthetic mattress and pillow are off-gassing more of these chemicals and that whatever amount your mattress is “breathing out," you are breathing in. It’s hard to be certain in most cases which chemicals are used, how much we are breathing in, and what the long-term health effects might be. What's in Your Matttress? Every mattress is made somewhat differently, so the chemicals are different, and their effects may vary from person to person. But here’s what can be said with certainty: Memory foam mattresses typically have a very caustic odor. The odor usually dissipates in a few days or weeks, but the mattress will continue to off-gas— though gradually less—for years. Since foam degrades over time, it’s logical to assume that its ingredients are, to some degree, continuously escaping into the air. Most fabrics and fibers are treated with many kinds of chemicals. Mattresses “treatedâ€? to repel dust mites contain pesticides. Almost all foundations use cardboard as a nearsurface layer. Cardboard is usually made using harsh acids and other chemicals. Layers are bonded together with large quantities of glues and adhesives. Even air-bed urethanes emit toxic chemicals.
Mattresses containing cotton that is not certified organic are made with cotton grown with pesticides and herbicides. Conventional wool is processed using harsh chemicals. Why Aren't Consumers Protected? The mattress industry would like us to believe that the copious amounts of chemicals stay “locked inside every mattress anyway, and chemical manufacturers just want us to trust that their products are safe. Yet consider the asbestos and tobacco industries, which lobbied just as hard against growing evidence of harm. Pesticides? Hormone-altering plastics? We could go on. The bottom line is, if you have full faith that government agencies are reliably testing the chemicals in the products you and your family use every day, then you have thousands of mattresses to choose from. But consider this quote from a 2009 story in The Washington Post: “Under current laws, the government has little or no information about the health hazards or risks of most of the 80,000 chemicals on the U.S. market today. (Aug. 9) Further perspective can be found in our previous post, Simple Chemistry. A Simple Solution On the other hand, if you think it’s better to be proactive about your health and safety, then search for a comfortable, durable organic mattress that is made of the purest materials available. And sleep without fear. For more information, call Doug Belleville at STL Beds, 636-296-8540 or please visit online at www.STLBeds.com. This is an article provided by www.savvyrest.com.

The Story of Ron’s ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) By Simon Yu, MD
W
hen an advanced cancer patient or ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) patient comes to see me for an evaluation, the patient and I understand that we are racing against time to beat the odds of the inevitable, dying and death. We often ask the question, “Is there time to heal?” I previously wrote an article on that subject, “Time to Heal: New Medicine Based on New Biology.” Here is the story of Ron, a nice person. Ron, a 68 year old man, came to see me with a new diagnosis of ALS. His initial symptoms were legs feeling weak, dragging his left foot, and he noticed twitching and spasms in his leg for the previous six months. A second opinion by another neurologist gave the same diagnosis. He came to see me for nutritional therapy and a detoxification program. He was not interested in a new drug therapy for ALS because of side effects and minimum potential benefits. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”, is one of the most dreaded, progressive neurodegenerative diseases that affects motor neurons, and losing control of muscles. In the later stages of the disease, the individual becomes paralyzed. The disease eventually leads to their death from respiratory failure. The cause of ALS is unknown. As motor neurons degenerate, they can no longer send impulses to the muscle fibers that normally result in muscle movement. Common symptoms include muscle weakness of arms, legs, speech, swallowing, and breathing. The incidence of ALS is two per 100,000 people. The average life expectancy is two to five years from the time of diagnosis. About twenty percent of people live over five years and ten percent live over ten years. Ron’s physical examination was unremarkable. He was able to ambulate and walk without too much difficulty, although he felt his legs were weak. Acupuncture meridian assessment indicated seven out of forty meridians were out of balance including the lymphatic dental point, central nervous system, allergy, heart, liver, and gallbladder meridians. After the evaluations, I told Ron and his family that I do not treat the diagnosis of ALS, or symptoms. I said I would try to remove as many interferences (hidden underlying problems) as fast as possible, to let the body have time to heal itself. The best I can do is slow down and modify the disease process into a more benign form. He said he previously had 20 plus dental silver-mercury amalgams. Most of them had been replaced although he had two amalgams left. He also had two root canals at tooth numbers 3 and 18. I told him his amalgams should be removed and the root canals should be extracted as soon as possible by a biological dentist who understands potential toxic effects of amalgams and root canals. Heavy metal provocation showed moderate amounts of antimony, lead, mercury, and tin. He also had a dental infection at his old wisdom tooth number 17. This required an oral surgeon to clean out the infected jaw bone at the site of this tooth. One of the hardest parts
of his treatment plan was convincing Ron to have more dental work done, including oral surgery, without any guarantee that the dental work will help him. It took him one year to complete the dental work. During the course of his treatment, he was on anti-parasitic medications, antibiotics for dental infections, antifungal medications, and chelation therapy for fungal and heavy metal exposures. He is on nutritional supplements and additional detoxification and exercise programs, including crawling daily to re-program his neural connections and neuromuscular conditioning. He was interested in writing a book to inspire other patients with ALS. I told him I would write a story about him to inspire him and other ALS patients. Ron is fighting against time. He will continue his journey of battling ALS and writing his book. I want his story to be told. A wheelchair is not an option! I told him he should still be monitored by a neurologist for ALS, perhaps learn to tap dance, to show his neurologist that he can have ALS and still tap dance on his yearly visit. Can he beat ALS? I have no idea. However, I know that all his acupuncture meridians have finally been balanced after the dental/jaw operation. Now, he has a chance to repair and heal. He can still walk on his own, although he is complaining of some leg weakness and spasms. At this stage, my duty as a physician is to monitor and maintain all his meridians in balance, like a well-tuned violin. Hopefully, he has time to heal at last. Ffresh R E S H fare FARE Start The New Year With Hearty Soup by Kari Hartel, RD, LD Program Coordinator, Cooking Matters, Operation Food Search
I
t is a brand new year, and what better way to ring in 2015 in a healthy way than with comforting, steaming hot, hearty bowl of healthy soup. This is a perfect dish to highlight considering January is National Soup Month, and many satisfying seasonal soups utilize hearty winter vegetables. Toss in some whole-grains, lean proteins, and perhaps a couple cubes of cheese and you have yourself a one-pot meal that is both satisfying and thrifty. Enjoy some fruit salad for dessert and you’ve eaten all five food groups in one meal. Soup is a healthy, affordable, and delicious way to incorporate more vegetables and whole grains into your diet. It is also very easy to prepare and can be a great way to feed a large crowd or use up produce leftover in your fridge. Below is a delicious, kid-friendly, crowd-pleasing recipe for broccoli soup. Broccoli Soup Serves 8, 1/2 cup serving, 90 Calories, 2.5 grams fat, 310 mg sodium, 12 grams carbohydrates, 2 grams fiber, 6 grams protein Recipe courtesy of Cooking Matters Ingredients • 1 large onion • 1 large potato • 1 medium carrot • 2 large broccoli crowns • 1 medium stalk celery • 1 clove garlic • 1 1/2 teaspoons canola oil • 1 whole bay leaf • 1 cup low-fat milk • 2 (14 1/2-ounce) cans low-sodium chicken broth • 1 ounce low-fat cheddar cheese • 3/4 teaspoon salt
• 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper Directions 1. Rinse and peel onion, potato, and carrot. Rinse broccoli and celery. Peel garlic. 2. Dice onion and celery. Slice potato and carrots into thin slices. Cut broccoli florets away from the stem. Slice stems thinly. Mince garlic. 3. Grate cheese. 4. In a large pot over medium-high heat, heat oil. Add celery and onion. Cook until soft and lightly golden brown, about 6–8 minutes. Add garlic and stir. Cook about 30 seconds more. 5. Add potato, carrot, broccoli stems, bay leaf, milk, and broth to pot. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until veggies are soft, about 15 minutes. Add broccoli florets in the last 10 minutes. 6. Remove and discard bay leaf. In a blender, puree about half the soup. Return blended soup to pot. 7. Add cheese, salt, and pepper. Simmer to melt the cheese, 2–3 minutes. Chef’s Notes • Try cauliflower instead of broccoli. • Add a dash of ground cayenne pepper or paprika for heat. • Keep pot uncovered when cooking green veggies like broccoli. This will help keep the color. • Be careful when blending hot soup. Fill the blender only half full. Blend in batches, if needed. If your blender lid has a removable cap, remove it. Then, cover the lid completely with a kitchen towel. This allows hot steam to escape. • If you do not have a blender, gently use a potato masher to blend hot soup. Learn To Be A Beekeeper! by Cassandra Hage, Beekeeper
F
ive years ago, I came across a flyer that would change my life. It promoted the idea of learning how to “make your own honey,” which I realize now is silly – the bees do all of the work! A blossoming DIY-er and urban homesteader, I saw the workshop as an opportunity to learn about something else I could add to the mix. I love honey and bees seemed pretty interesting, so why not get some information? So I registered, then showed up for the workshop. Little did I know, before I left, I would be committing myself to beekeeping, committing my parents to hosting two hives, and embarking on an interesting and rewarding hobby unlike any other! The Beekeepers Workshop was my introduction to the Eastern Missouri Beekeepers Association (EMBA). It’s composed of a 100% volunteer core of highly dedicated individuals who are passionate about promoting beekeeping and training the next generation of backyard beekeepers. EMBA hosts monthly meetings that offer networking opportunities, Q&A, and high-quality presentations about topics ranging from how to do a hive inspection to how to make lip balm with your beeswax. Members range from experienced commercial beekeepers with 30+ years of experience to “newbees” who are just figuring it out. In addition to monthly meetings, EMBA puts on an incredible annual workshop with sessions for beginners and sessions for experienced beekeepers. EMBA recruits nationally renowned honeybee scientists, professors, and beekeepers to train attendees on current best practices and share cutting-edge research. As a beginner at the workshop, I didn’t know what to expect, but was pleased to find that EMBA had a plan for me! Throughout the day, the presenters took us through the ins and outs of beekeeping, covering topics like honeybee biology and how to perform a hive inspection. They answered questions like: How often will I get stung? How do I find the queen? How much will it cost me to start a
hive? When will I be able to harvest honey? How much time will it take to manage my hive? By the time the day wrapped up, I had met beekeepers old and young, experienced and new, country dwellers and urbanites, commercial keepers and hobbyists – you name it! I also developed a fascination with these incredible creatures and a serious craving for honey. I was hooked! It wasn’t long until I had placed my order for two hives (because you can’t get just one, right?), beekeeping equipment, and my first two starter colonies through the club’s cooperative purchase option. I assembled the hive with help from some experienced keepers at the hive assembly workshop that followed in March. Soon, I was all set up and ready for the bees to arrive. When I picked them up at the delivery point, I stayed to watch the demonstration on how to get the bees from the package into the hive and get them situated in their new home. Every step of the way, volunteers from the EMBA served as resources and mentors. Five years and four hives later, I’ve harvested hundreds of pounds of honey, brewed hundreds of gallons of mead (honey wine), and even started to sell surplus honey on the side. The bees are a great fit for my small South St. Louis City yard alongside fruit trees and a vegetable garden. I love having honey year round to share with friends and family. Sound like something you could see yourself doing or want to “just get some information,” like me five years ago? Join us at the 8th Annual Beekeeping Workshop! It will change your life too! Here is all the information to get you started: Saturday, February 7th, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Maritz in Fenton, Missouri. Tuition: $80 through January 18, 2014, $95 January 19th - February 1st. Continental Breakfast, Lunch and refreshments are included in the cost. Registration packets include course materials, an authoritative reference book, beekeeping periodicals, and equipment catalogs. Bracing for Impact: Justice, Health & the Environment
T
he new year always seems to start off with a big, deep breath, like the kind you take as a car on a roller coaster reaches the peak and hangs for a moment before barreling down the track. If those first few seconds, suspended in the air, are the month of January, then the rest of the year is dominated by twists and turns through the legislative session, civil injustices, lawsuits, and environmental disasters, such as oil spills and floods. As we begin 2015 at the Missouri Coalition for the Environment we are gearing up for another year of thrills, watchdogging, advocating, and problem-solving. Our region faces many problems and what we know, as environmentalists, is that we are all connected. We understand that “injustice anywhere threatens justice everywhere,” as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said – whether it threatens our brothers and sisters or the drinking water on which we all depend for life. We cannot anticipate every legislative action or
court ruling that 2015 will bring but here are a few things that we are braced and ready for: One of the greatest threats to the St. Louis region is the uncontrolled, underground fire in the Bridgeton landfill, which smolders alongside the radioactive wastes at the West Lake Landfill Superfund Site. What is needed is an independent risk assessment, increased safety measures for residents and workers, and the removal of the radioactive wastes away from people and water. Missouri’s unhealthy dependence on coal continues to risk our children’s health and exacerbate the impacts of climate change. Continuing to pour unlimited amounts of carbon dioxide into the air in the name of “cheap” energy means we all pay the price in emergency room visits and missed school and work days for asthma and respiratory illnesses. It means more flood damage and crop loss. The solar industry has demonstrated successfully that we can provide thousands of jobs and cut energy costs for consumers while reducing our carbon imprint. We must keep up the pressure to secure a more affordable, healthier, cleaner, and safer energy future for Missouri. And we will dive deeper into the issues that connect food, health, and the environment because when we make locally grown fruits and vegetables affordable we improve health and the soil and water on which we all depend. You can read about these issues and more at www.moenviron.org. So buckle up and hang on for the ride! Visit www.moenviron.org to learn more.
Protecting Our Communities and Ourselves by Don Fitz
P
eople need to actively to protect themselves from poisons toxins like Agent Orange and rubber mulch. Challenges to communities include infrastructure issues such as storm water control and planned overdevelopment. January 2015 episodes of Green Time TV explore these issues. Is it too extreme to talk about use of Agent Orange as chemical warfare? The first January Green Time show features Michael McPhearson, of Veterans For Peace, looking at Agent Orange, including its long term effects on US soldiers, Vietnamese civilians and plant and animal life in Viet Nam. He explores how military personnel have been affected by depleted uranium and other chemicals in recent wars. Why should we be concerned about storm water? How do soil compaction and asphalt surfaces affect water? During the second January show, Lance LeComb, of Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD), and Lorin Crandall, of Missouri Coalition for the Environment discuss MSD’s dual functions regarding waste water and storm water infrastructure . They look natural watersheds, rain gardens, trees, native plants and riparian buffers. Did you know that rubber tires are full of toxins that are skin and eye irritants and that their chemicals can stunt the growth of plants and contaminate ground water? For years, tires have been considered a hazardous waste. But now, they are being ground up for rubber mulch to be put on children’s playgrounds and to be used in yards. During the third January show, Donna Jones, Elected Member of St. Louis School Board, and University City resident Rachel Slaughter address dangers of rubber mulch. The fourth January show features Romona Taylor Williams, of Metro St. Louis Coalition for Inclusion & Equity (M-SLICE), and Rev. Elston McCowan, of the Gateway Green Alliance, discussing how urban renewal dismantled the infrastructure of the black community. They also look at how cities like Paris, France are built more sustainably and how development could happen without excluding people. Romona Taylor Williams is back for the final Green Time episode with Samuel Taylor, of Washington University’s Center for Social Development. They dis-
cuss the St. Louis Sustainability Plan and demographic changes in north St. Louis. What are psychological and social costs of gentrification? How does the rapid gentrification in St. Louis differ from patterns in other communities? What could sustainable development look like? January shows include “Agent Orange. American Chemical and Biological Warfare,” “Introducing MSD Project Clear,” “The Hazards of Rubber Mulch,” “Carfree Cities: The Gritty Details,” “Cully Grove,” and “Village Market - Non-Profit, Super Local” Green Time appears at noon on Saturdays in St. Louis on Channel 24-1 and at 8 pm on Mondays in St. Louis on Channel 24-2, Springfield on Channel 39, Joplin on Channel 36 and Marshfield on Channel 17. Our Resolution: Save Energy & Money with the 25x20 Campaign By Johanna Schweiss, Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator, USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter
B
usinesses, schools, municipalities, institutions, and houses of worship in the St. Louis region have stepped up to show their commitment to the environment and to their bottom line. How? By taking the 25x20 pledge to benchmark building energy use. Benchmarking is the process of measuring how much energy a building consumes over time, and comparing that performance to the past and to other comparable buildings. The 25x20 Campaign’s goal is to reduce regional building energy consumption by 25% by the year 2020. This goal aligns with the City of St. Louis greenhouse gas emissions reduction target. The High Performance Building Initiative, coordinated by the St. Louis Regional Chamber and U.S. Green Building Council – Missouri Gateway Chapter, launched the campaign in January of 2014, and since that time a diverse set of building owners have jumped on board. Participants in the 25x20 campaign range from operators of one building, such as Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Ferguson and the Mid-County YMCA, to some of the region’s largest institutions and most recognizable names, like the Cardinals, Express Scripts, and Saint Louis University. SLU joined the 25x20 campaign in August, pledging to benchmark the energy consumed by their 134 buildings. These buildings range from very recently completed projects to buildings over 120 years in age, and include residence halls, academic halls, sports arenas and research
facilities. Brandon Verhoff, Director of Sustainability and Benchmarking for the Division of Facilities Services, said of the campaign “Saint Louis University is devoted to decreasing energy usage on campus. It will take the entire University to embrace and support reduction efforts and we look forward to partnering with our SLU community to make a real difference.” And benchmarking has been shown to make a difference! According to ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, a free online energy and water benchmarking tool, buildings that benchmark their energy use for three years see an average energy savings of 7%. Energy benchmarking is the first step to saving energy and saving money. As the saying goes, “you can’t manage what you don’t measure.” Now you can explore an interactive map featuring all buildings that have taken the pledge to benchmark on the Green Building Information Gateway (GBIG), a platform that connects people to data and insights about the green aspects of our built environment. Users can browse green building projects like LEED registration and certification, ENERGY STAR certification, Green Ribbon Schools, and more, all over the world! As we all consider our resolutions for 2015, what better action is there to commit to? Benchmarking building energy use at your office, school, local government or house of worship has the potential to reduce energy consumption, reduce costs, and reduce environmental impacts! To take the pledge and start benchmarking, and to explore the 25x20 participants on GBIG, visit www.25x20.org.

Caring For Backyard Birds All Year Long by Mitch Leachman Executive Director St. Louis Aububon Society
M
ost people think only of birdfeeders when it comes to helping support our backyard birds. While feeders do provide supplemental food nutrition for a variety of common bird species, water and shelter can be even more valuable to the birds. Further, native plants are an exciting and sustainable way to more fully support their life cycle, especially breeding. Bird feeding is easy and need not be expensive. A variety of mixes are available at specialty bird stores, pet stores, hardware/nursery and even grocery stores. However, quality feeders are best left to the experts at the bird stores, especially since most are guaranteed and readily repaired/replaced if damaged. Folks there can also explain the details of seed type by feeder and type of bird. Feeders should be located where you can easily see and enjoy them and mostly in the open. Avoid placing adjacent to shrubs or other dense plantings where predators can hide, and if you have a cat you allow outside on its own, please skip the bird feeding. Water is often overlooked, but as essential to birds as it is to us humans. Bird baths can be procured at most of the places listed earlier for feed, but are not required. Most any wide and shallow container will work; I prefer the large plastic plant saucers the home improvement and hardware stores sell for about $10. They can be placed most anywhere, are easy to clean and hold up year-round. I even leave one out in winter
with an electric heater—yup, birds need water in winter, too. Like feeders and water, bird houses should be installed where readily visible to you, while respecting the needs and safety of the birds. Breeding season is still months away, but cold weather roosts are sought after all winter. Small birds often use bird houses as shelter. For most suburban yards, a wren box is best with an entrance hole no larger than 1 1/8 inches in diameter. Bluebirds are amazing, but their needs are too particular for most St. Louis neighborhoods. Finally, native plants provide essential bird food directly with fruit and seeds and support a variety of plant-eating insects which are in turn eaten by birds. In fact, all of Missouri’s songbirds need insects to provide protein to their babies. For additional details, see “Landscaping for Life” in the May 2014 Healthy Planet. Birds are a colorful and musical part of our natural world. With some planning and very little investment, you can help sustain them while enjoying each and every winged miracle! Brigid’s Cloth
T
he beginnings of spring can be noted near the first of February if you pay close attention. Hours of light and warmth increasing each day cause seeds to begin stirring beneath the hard winter ground. The life force of the green world may even show itself with brave early shoots of crocus pushing through the snow. The celebration of the emergence of spring is known as the Feast of the Flame or St. Brigid’s Day. The goddess Brigid was such a strong deity of the native people that when Christianity came to Ireland she was transformed into Saint Brigid. An old saying goes “Brigid breathes life into the mouth of dead winter.” She tends the fire of illumination as she melts the coldness of winter. Candles are lit in profusion celebrating the return of longer days and warmth. Brigid’s Cloak is made of heavenly sunbeams. Sunbeams have been honored in many cultures as indications of Divine Presence in our lives. The custom of blessing Brigid’s Cloth on the eve of February First has been observed for generations in Celtic households. On that night, take a piece of white unwashed cloth. Hang it outside where it can absorb the light of the sun, moon and stars for the night and the day. It was believed Brigid walked the earth during that time and would bless the cloth as she passed. Bring the cloth in and tear, do not cut, into strips. This is traditionally done by women and then stored in the thatch above the door of
the cottage. I place my Brigid’s Cloth in a basket and hang it near the doorway. Brigid’s Cloth can be used for healing, crafting, writing, or other works of inspiration. I’ve used the strips as prayer flags hanging from trees, placed under pillows, twisted around tools, as a collar on my dog Morgan. I’ve wrapped Brigid’s Cloth around body parts needing healing, bringing Brigid’s light, warmth and blessings. One of her powers is guardianship of the land. When I pray for a place, I tie a Cloth strip in a tree and envision Brigid’s Cloak cast over the entire area. I ask her to wrap her Cloak around the land and all beings upon it as a protective and healing circle. Aligned with the element of Fire to forge and mold, Brigid is the spirit of transformation, change and regeneration. She presides as midwife of the arts of poetry, healing, smithcraft. Feel her wise presence in moments of creativity and motivation. Her role as fire keeper and guardian of the hearth manifests daily at home through hospitality, cooking, and crafting, breathing new life into everyday activities. The Feast of the Flame is a time to purify the physical, psychic and soulful strands of life to prepare for the coming year. Light your candles, hang your Brigid’s Cloth and make a prayer to the ancient Celtic Fire Goddess. “Help me breathe life into whatever is dead around me. Let your radiance shine in my life so that my actions may sparkle with the heavenly light the Creator of the Elements showers upon us.” Check out Pat’s “Nature Chronicles” for musings on the Human-Nature relationship. Straub’s Fine Grocers and St. Louis Composting Work Together To Divert 50,000 Tons of Food Waste Since 2010 Linda Wiggen Kraft • Green & Growing Editor begins the narrowing January’s Seed Catalog Ritual down of possibilities as by Linda Wiggen Kraft
J
anuary is the beginning of a new garden year and time of the Seed Catalog Ritual. A time of dreaming, planning and planting those perfect gardens in the heart of a gardener, where gardens first need to grow. The ritual is pretty much the same each year. A list of the seed companies whose catalogs I want to look at, a list of plants I want to check out and maybe grow from seed, and a list of plants I have successfully grown and want to grow again. My first choice for seeds is from companies that are committed to heirlooms, organically grown and non-gmo seeds. I gather the lists, the pile of catalogs, my laptop computer, a cup of warm tea and a blanket. I find a comfortable spot where I can wrap the blanket around myself, sip my tea and look at the catalogs in paper or online. I first look at the printed catalogs. I skim each page and turn down the corners of pages I want to come back to. I go online next. I jot down the pages I want to come back to online as I continue browsing. In this first part of the Seed Catalog Ritual, I don’t look for anything specific. It is a wide search and exploration of all the beautiful plants for flower and edible gardens. This wide exploration brings the feeling of unlimited possibility. A sense of awe and gratitude over takes me for the shapes, colors and tastes that are available from these little miracles of seeds. All we have to do is plant the seeds and this universe of wonder comes alive. Often hours and hours pass in this euphoria of plant possibilities as I look at the catalogs. I then begin to look at the lists of plants I want to check out and ones I want to grow again. This
I am brought back to the limits of space, climate, time and money. How much space do I really have, how much sun shines in those spaces, what can be planted in cool weather and what needs to wait, how much care can I give, how much money can I spend? These are all questions that I start to ask as I narrow my choices. There are twenty different kinds of tomatoes that are all appealing, but I know tomatoes will grow in only a couple of places with enough sun. The squirrels leave the small tomatoes alone. I have three perfect trellises already in place. One tomato package of heirloom cherry seeds will do. My favorite flower to grow from seed is zinnia and my favorite zinnia is Queen Lime Red, a mixture of greens, yellows and pinks. Although I love most of the colors and shapes, this year I will only try apricot cactus zinnia and white polar bear. I imagine each area of my gardens and what space for plants this year. I am adding more edibles into my flower garden, so I want ones that are first of all tasty, but also look good in my front yard. The yellow cherry tomatoes and ruby swiss chard fit into the color scheme. As I get more specific, it doesn’t take long to figure out what seeds I can realistically grow. I make my lists, send in my orders and let those seeds take root in my heart and mind as I wait for the time to plant. Here are my favorite seed companies. They all have online catalogs. Some are only online. Additional online searches with bring up hard to find and other special seeds you may be looking for. he U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that about 40 percent of the food produced in America never gets eaten. Supermarkets and restaurants discard much of it, with more than 30 million tons of food and organic waste ending up in landfills each year. Fortunately, environmentally sound change is afoot. In October, 2014, Massachusetts began enforcing new legislation prohibiting any entity that produces more than one ton of food waste a month from sending it to a landfill. Newly passed laws in Rhode Island and California will have those states enforcing a similar ban in 2016. As the Washington Post detailed earlier this month (“Supermarkets take up composting but waste delivery system lags” Nov. 3, 2014) food waste composting remains cumbersome. For example, Safeway stores on the East Coast first ship collected compostable organics to a return center in Maryland where it is pooled before being trucked another 100 miles to a compost facility. In contrast, St. Louis is blessed with an efficient and expanding food waste recycling network with more than 200 participants. The initiative – which recently crossed the 50,000-ton-mark in measured organic waste diverted from local landfills – owes much of its success to the decision of Straub’s in 2010 to become a charter member with program sponsor, St. Louis Composting. “They were hungry for our ‘green’ waste and diverting our organics to them enabled us to reduce the High Mowing Seeds, highmowingseeds.com (all organic, some heirloom non gmo) Johnny’s Select Seeds, johnnyseeds.com (some organic & heirloom , non gmo) Renee’s Seeds, reneesgarden.com (some heirloom, non gmo) Seeds of Change, seedsofchange.com (all organic & mostly heirloom, non gmo)
waste we were sending to landfills,” recalls Greg Lehr, a 15-year Straub’s employee and the grocer’s chief produce buyer. “We also hoped to save on trash hauling fees, but that hasn’t turned out to be a significant factor.” What has proved significant is the amount of organic waste the grocer’s four stores have diverted from landfills – more than 150 tons in a handful of years. Orange rinds, lettuce churnings, melon rinds and corn husks lead the recyclables list, says Lehr. “We squeeze 33 tons of oranges a year. That makes a lot of rinds.” Composting is easy, notes Lehr. “Employees simply load roll-away totes with organics. The totes are collected twice a week. A chart tells new employees what is compostable and what isn’t.” Every spring, when Straub’s stocks one-cubic-yard bags of compost, Lehr lets customers know the role the grocer had in making it. “People feel good about it when they know. At the Clayton store, we sold about 200 bags this spring. Composting fills a community need.” In addition to fruits and vegetables, items being composted are breads and cereal; dairy; coffee grounds, filters and tea bags; compostable service ware and some soiled paper goods. Upon entering the composting stream the food waste is mixed with other organic material, primarily yard trimmings. Six months later – following precisely timed manipulation – it is transformed into lawn- and garden-ready compost. www.stlcompost.com. www.straubs.com Select Seeds, selectseeds.com (antique flowers, non gmo) Territorial Seeds, www.territorialseed.com (some organic, non gmo) Turtle Seeds turtletreeseed.org (all organic & biodynamic, non gmo) Linda Wiggen Kraft can be contacted at 314504-4266 or visit www.creativityforthesoul.com.

he growing obesity problem globally has become too large to ignore. Almost one-third of the world’s population is overweight and more than one-third of Americans are obese. The estimated global cost per year is 2 trillion dollars. Being overweight is not just a cosmetic issue – it causes serious health issues. Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes and cancers. Fat is where much of the toxic burden is stored. The more fat we add – the more toxic we become. A BMI (body mass index) over 25 is considered overweight and a BMI over 30 is considered obese. The BMI is an estimate of body fat. What has changed in the last twenty years that is contributing to the problem? • Fast food restaurants • Prepackaged processed food • Hidden sugars and increased consumption, deceptive marketing and labels • High stress work and lifestyle • Poor quality foods are cheaper • Introduction of Genetically Modified Organisms • Increased use of pesticides • Not enough exercise • Lack of balance between work and relaxation The good news is that weight loss has a significant positive impact on these diseases reducing and even eliminating them. Diet is a powerful modifiable risk factor and should be the first

Structural Integration and Standing by Sally & Alan Cina

ne of the ways we assist our clients is getting them to be able to stand comfortably. This is useful for much of our life as we stand and talk with colleagues, and friends, or wait in line. Part of what we do is assist our clients to create their own ease of life/living and teaching people to stand is one of the ways we do this. We accomplish this in a few ways with either our hands, mental constructs and exercises to assist our clients in keeping the changes and continuing them in their daily life. Why is standing important? You can be relaxed and keep strains off of your body with good posture. Some of us have challenges with our necks and backs, much of this is related to how we stand. To do improve your posture start with your knees at ease. They should be straight but not locked. Then check-in where the weight is in your feet. It should be balanced front to back and side to side. With this as your starting point, practice it and see what your changes are throughout your day. Changing the alignment of the feet is part of this
process and relates to walking and running. To change the position of the feet can take time as the patterns that are holding them need to be changed slowly otherwise the body will compensate and a new pattern is created that overpowers the older. That expends a lot of extra energy. To learn how to get your feet under you and more in-depth work, you can contact us at 314-489-3064 Sally@RolfSTL.com or 314-771-8730 Alan@RolfSTL.com. Ask The
HERB LADY Cathy Schram
After the holidAys, whAt cAn i do to get bAck on trAck?
Q: I hate to admit this, but I totally over indulged over the holidays. I am feeling bloated, sluggish and really tired. Now that the holidays are over, what can I do to help get back on track again? A: Many people will be feeling the same way because we often forget to stay with our healthy eating habits during the holidays. We are tempted with so many foods and drinks during the holiday season and we end up paying for it later. I would highly recommend that you get back on track by starting with a good cleanse to help your body detoxify. If you are tired, run-down and/or unable to concentrate, these are symptoms of toxicity in the body. Toxicity can impair your health to various degrees, ranging from decreases in energy to serious illness. Fortunately, there is a natural healing method called cleansing that can help correct this toxic state. Cleansing can help pamper your body's cleansing organs while ejecting toxins that are causing discomfort. Following, are some of the herbs that can help the body naturally detoxify: Milk Thistle – This herb helps detoxify and cleanse the liver. Not only does it help build and restore healthy liver performance, it provides nutrients essential for proper liver function. It contains a powerful antioxidant, Silymarin. Silymarin has been shown in studies to help reduce and repair free radical damage. Milk Thistle can also help to stimulate the growth of new liver cells to replace damaged ones.
Burdock – Burdock is an excellent blood, skin and kidney purifier that helps to eliminate harmful acids. This herb also encourages sweating, which aids the release of toxins through the skin. Black Walnut – This herb has anti-fungal and astringent properties. It helps cleanse the body of a variety of intestinal parasites and yeast. Psyllium Hulls – Psyllium is a bulk fiber laxative. The husks act like a “broom” cleansing the intestines and absorbing toxins that adhere to the intestinal walls. Some good herbs for detoxifying the kidneys are Uva Ursi and Buchu. To strengthen, tone and cleanse the colon, Cascara Sagrada and Buckthorn are good choices. They are laxative herbs. You can purchase many different types of detoxifying kits which contain many of these herbal combinations. Or, if you prefer, they can be purchased individually to design your own detoxifying program. It is best to speak to your physician or qualified health care practitioner before undergoing detoxifying programs, especially if you have health problems. This herb information is for health education purposes only. It is not intended to replace the services of licensed health practitioners. Consult with a physician for any condition that requires professional care. Do you have questions about herbs or vitamins? Send them to Cathy Schram, CNHP and Certified Herbalist. A New Year Resolution You Can Keep
J
anuary, for many, is considered a time of new beginnings. We come charging into a new year, full of resolutions to lose those few extra pounds that we’ve gained, to be more productive, or to quit smoking. But what often happens, is that after working towards these goals for a short bit of time, we experience a sense of let-down or mild depression, almost like a rebound from the holidays. We feel family tensions and sometimes thinly veiled anger. There is a voice within that seems to be telling us that something just isn’t right. And before you know it, you’ve already fallen behind in your efforts to “get it together this year”. And the more one drifts, the more anxious or depressed they get, and repeating these unwanted behaviors, as they find themselves back in the same place they were last year. It happens so frequently, this “drift” from New Year resolutions, that there ought to be a name for it, like there is for seasonal affective disorders. Attempting to change one’s life by behaviorally addressing issues on the surface, such as losing weight, quitting smoking, or being more productive is certainly a noble and valiant effort towards better living. However, attempting to make profound changes in life without addressing the underlying issues at the source of these unwanted problems is like trying to fix a leak in the roof by putting a bucket underneath it. You’ll address the problem, but the water will still flow.
In order for profound changes in life to manifest and be maintained, you have to dig down deep to the root of the causes that you can see at the surface of your life, and address these deeper issues once and for all. This unconscious pain is the reason why you cannot lose the weight or stop smoking or have more energy, and is responsible for your “drifting” away from your resolutions to change. And no matter how hard you work to change these behaviors, without getting to the root of these issues, you will gain the weight back, find yourself with low energy, or smoking again when you are stressed. To get different results, you have to try something different. Why not start your year off on the right foot by committing to your own deep emotional healing, which will clean up all these other issues in the process. Wouldn’t that be quite a different way of doing things? ell here we are at the end of another year. It’s that time when everyone starts thinking about those many goals they wanted to accomplish that have slipped by, yet again, unrealized for the umpteenth time. These would include the ever-popular New Year’s goals such as losing weight, saving more money, going back to school, hitting the gym, etc. However, I would like to encourage everyone to consider adopting a different type of goal this year. This is the goal of shedding the limiting labels that you place on yourself. When clients seek my services, wanting to change some aspect of their lives, one of the first things I introduce them to is the concept of labeling themselves. People label themselves as depressed, unable to lose weight, the one who always makes bad choices in relationships, the person who becomes too overwhelmed to cope with parenthood, the person who is too damaged to be loved, etc. The problem with these labels is that they are so limiting. Unfortunately, these
internal messages can cause us to stall on progressing in life and sadly may become a self-fulfilling prophecy which then reinforces this faulty internal message. I understand that the thought of changing these internal labels can seem nearly impossible. However, some simple behavioral therapy techniques are all that is needed to begin to remove the roadblocks and achieve your self-designed life. Then, as the limiting labels begin to melt away, small steps are all that is required to set the wheel in motion, as its own inertia will lead to change in many other areas in your life. So, this New Year, forget about making those same, tired-old resolutions that haven’t happened yet and just keep making you feel a failure for not meeting them. Instead, this New Year, make the resolution to shed the limiting labels that you may be putting on yourself. Learn to become conscious of the negative labeling/self-talk that you engage in. Think about just how often you catch yourself thinking or saying negative, limiting statements. If you can master this, you will have no problem setting and achieving many of your goals in life. St. Louis Fitness Alliance Announces Top 10 Healthiest Restaurants in St. Louis
T
he Fitness Alliance, an association of health club owners, managers and other industry leaders, just released their list of the top 10 healthiest restaurants in Saint Louis. Making the list is: Frida’s and Winslow’s in University City, Crushed Red in Clayton and Kirkwood, Athlete Eats and Purple Martin in St. Louis City, a local food delivery service called Metabolic Meals, Fit Flavors in Chesterfield, Hot Pot in Kirkwood, Nathalie’s in the Central West End and Seedz in Clayton. The campaign was sponsored by Rain Crow Ranch, a grass fed beef farm in Missouri that supplies local restaurants with high quality meat that is raised in a healthier manner. The process of vetting the restaurants consisted of these functions: 1. Voting by local fitness industry leaders 2. Input from local restaurateurs. 3. Feedback from local farms and suppliers 4. Analysis of menu options by local dietician 5. Evaluation of ingredients and suppliers by local dietician and fitness expert, Abby Herrick. “We focused much more on the quality of the ingredients and making sure they were real food. That’s why you’ll find the restaurants on the list can also offer desserts and other tasty treats. It takes a lot of hard work and passion to ensure that certain standards are met and it was important to know that restaurants selected had solid values in maintaining that integrit,.” Herrick said. St. Louis Fitness Alliance Chapter Director, Travis Moore, says of the campaign, “We had several goals in pursuing this campaign. First, we wanted to raise awareness of, and be an advocate for, the healthy restaurants in St. Louis. Our hope is that more St. Louis locals would seek higher quality ingredients from the places they buy food and that they would also be willing to pay higher prices for higher quality food. Lastly, we wanted to build a bridge between healthy restaurants and health clubs because we noticed that exercisers tend to be more motivated if they are also eating healthy. Conversely, people who eat healthy are also more prone to start, and continue, a workout program. It was a strategic way to help both industries and work together to combat the nation’s healthcare crisis.” The three themes connecting the healthy restaurants were: the sourcing of local ingredients that are organic and chemical-free when possible, recipe’s made from scratch with real food, and accommodating special dietary needs like glutenfree or vegetarian options. Crushed Red offers a variety of options to make pizza healthy and delicious with whole grain or gluten free crust options and a multitude of healthy chop salads. They have two locations, one in Clayton and one in Kirkwood.
If you would like to have an ad or article published in The Healthy Planet magazine, please call 314-962-7748 for information.
Two of the restaurants are located in University City and they each grow their own food, Fridas, best known for being sugar and butter free, and having amazing fruit and veggie smoothies, and Winslow’s Home, which offers a very warm country feel with a robust menu. Athlete Eats is in the South Grand neighborhood and is famous for not just healthy and great tasting food and drinks, but also for providing meals to many of our local professional athletes in town. Purple Martin, also in the South Grand area of Fox Park, offers a great menu and nightlife as well. They have a weekly game night they call Cards and Cocktails, which is on Tuesday nights. Two spots that made the list aren’t restaurants in the traditional sense, but specialize in amazingly healthy food for St. Louisans. Metabolic Meals is a St. Louis based gourmet food delivery service that has also gained a lot of traction with professional athletes and specializes in fat-loss, sports performance and overall balanced health. In Chesterfield, Fit Flavors offers amazingly delicious and portion controlled meals for takeout. One of Kirkwood’s hottest restaurants, The HotPot combines the health and excitement of Asian influenced cuisine with a casual corner coffee shop. Their food and smoothies are incredibly fresh, all-natural and delicious. Nathalie’s, in the Central West End, offers a very sophisticated urban atmosphere and entertaining nightlife, combined with responsibly grown artisan cuisine directly from their farm in Clarksville, Missouri. And finally, Seedz Café, in the DeMun neighborhood of Clayton, an earthy restaurant that is as fantastically organic as it is committed to serving
the community with authentic love and healthy food. “What started as a simple way to unite the two worlds of fitness and nutrition, quickly began to flourish into something much bigger. It brought me a lot of joy to get to know the restaurant owners, their philosophy and ultimate purpose in wanting to make a difference in the community. Getting to see behind scenes of the restaurants and developing relationships with the owners on more of a personal level really brought a deeper appreciation and understanding for how they are serving St. Louis,” Herrick concluded. Abby Herrick can be reached at Abby@TheFitnessAlliance.org About The Fitness Alliance: The mission of The Fitness Alliance is to connect, inspire and equip fitness industry leaders on a local level for personal and professional development through local events. By growing a network of chapters around the globe, The Fitness Alliance is recruiting and training leaders who have the character, competency and commitment to recruit and train other leaders to transform the way the world understands fitness, prioritizes exercise, and values health. Not All Body Wraps are Created Equal by Linda Hoff
W
omen have been concerned with cellulite and inch loss since the beginning of time. And, women have been using various body wrap solutions to treat these conditions forever. But did you know that not all body wraps are the same? Cellulite is a toxic body condition caused by waste materials being trapped between cells, living a toxic lifestyle, water retention, a sluggish lymphatic system, hardening of the connective tissue and lack of circulation and lymphatic flow through cellulite prone areas. The following contribute to cellulite formation: crash dieting followed by weight gain, constipation, fatty foods, not enough water consumption, lack of exercise, alcohol/caffeine/nicotine, excess weight, increased hormonal activity, stress and drugs/medications. The only way to address this condition is by internal detoxification, regular internal cleansing body wraps, eating cleansing foods, daily exercise and massage. In other words, following a healthy lifestyle. Salt solutions, mineral salt wraps, seaweed wraps and liquid herbal wraps all promote toxins and water to come out through the pores. This leads to dehydration. And as soon as you hydrated the inches come back. Clay wraps draw impurities from the skin. Again causing dehydration. Thigh creams and spot wraps all work by using a chemical to shrink cells by removing moisture from the skin and tissues. Not only do they cause dehydration, but also add harmful chemicals to the body. The M'lis Internal Cleansing Wrap uses an herbal formulation that works inside the body by increasing circulation and flushing waste and toxins trapped in the tissues out through the lymphatic system. Created by a biochemist over 30 years ago, research shows increasing circulation and lymphatic flow creates cleansing of the tissues, healthy inch loss and diminished cellulite. These results are considered permanent (when following a healthy lifestyle) and completely safe. For best results a series of 3-6 wraps is recommended. Once per week or for every 5-10 pounds lost if used as part of a weight loss program. The benefits of the M'lis Internal Cleansing Body Wrap include: 4-14 inch lost with each wrap, cellulite reduction, results are immediate and the treatment is warm, pampering and comfortable. What’s New In The St. Louis ART SCENE for 2015

ARTful Living St. Louis Area Fine Arts, Crafts & Performing Arts Michelle “Mike” Ochonicky, Arts Editor
M
aybe it happened to you over the holidays: you were at a party and someone asked you, “So, what’s new?” And maybe your response was, “Oh, not much. Same old-same old, you know.” Right. It happens to everyone. That is exactly the initiative that caused Anne Murphy and Jane Langa to found MindFest, “niche classes, unique and quirky, fun classes definitely outside the box for the intellectuallycurious adult.” Are you intrigued yet? Read on! Personally, I’ve always used the month of January to take a class or two, just to jump start the year with fresh ideas or to try something new. MindFest offers classes on art, food, life+style, music, pop culture, St. Louis Gems, tech-savvy, and worldwise. Being busy women themselves, Anne and Jane immediately recognized the fact that everyone is pressed for time these days. A semester-long class is attractive but often just not possible to fit into hectic schedules. But a onenight, hour-and-a-half seminar, led by entertaining experts in each field? That’s a different story! Said Anne, “When Jane and I met, we found we shared a passion for the curious and quirky. The more we talked, the more inspired we were by the interesting-ness of life. We founded MindFest to bring people together to share knowledge and have fun.” The classes start on Wednesday, January 7 (what else are you doing on a Wednesday evening anyway?!), at The Novel Neighbor bookstore, 7905 Big Bend, as well as at subjectappropriate locations. Reasonably-priced at $20 per class, register for one or for multiples (save $10). Classes are informal, informative, and capped at just 20 students, so you can ask lots of questions. Upcoming topics include Be SelfieSavvy, Exploring Jazz, How to Choose Your Handheld Devices, Philosophy & the Art of Living. Check it out a www.mindfeststl.com. I’ll see you in a class or two! While January may be a month of frosty cold temperatures, leave it to Dance St. Louis to heat things up On January 30 and 31, “Song of Eva Peron” is presented by Tango Buenos Aires at the Touhill Performing Arts Center, on the UMSL campus. “Song of Eva Perón” traces Perón’s epic life—from her ascent to fame in the 1930s to her death in 1952. Starting from nothing but propelled by the influence of the Tango, which she first heard while growing up in the slums of Buenos Aires, Eva attained stardom and bloomed to be Argentina‘s First Lady. Her story brought her worldwide acclaim and still resonates with her millions of admirers. Sparkling and poignant, “Song of Eva Perón” highlights the flowering of a humble and beautiful woman. It’s the tale of a larger-than-life figure put into traditional Tango dance and music from Buenos Aires. The passionate performance will enthrall you as the dancers flawlessly execute the Tango with impressive, intricate muscular grace and interlacing movements. The Washington Post describes Tango Buenos Aires style as "...repeatedly crafted swirling, fast-paced tapestries of movement,

Why Isn’t My Son Getting Better? part III of III By Dr. James Feinberg Child Clinical Psychologist
I
n part I, I addressed how an inadequate psychological/psychiatric evaluation often results in boys not benefitting from mental health treatment. In part II, I addressed how other mental health provider (“MHP”) factors can contribute to treatment failures. In this last segment, common parental mistakes, leading to complications in treatment, are addressed. Typically, at the root of these mistakes, is a lack of information about the mental health field and the treatment process. For example: Over the years, I have encountered many parents who mistakenly believed that all MHP’s were created equal and that any MHP could treat their son. Wrong! Child and adolescent MHP’s are highly educated as well as extensively trained in treating these specific populations. So, choose very carefully who treats your son. Whereas, other parents believed that briefly consulting a MHP whenever a crisis arose was sufficient. The inherent problem with this “crisis oriented approach” is that the symptom may temporarily improve but the underlying cause was not addressed, never mind resolved. Consequently, additional crises continue to occur until you do so. Along, those same lines, I have encountered other parents who believed that boys could be treated in 6 appointments or less. Although insurance companies may perpetuate this myth, this really isn’t possible because of what’s involved in estab-
lishing rapport, getting the lay of the land, and then facilitating change. In my 25+ years of experience, the greater the emotional distress of the boy, the more serious the problem(s), and/or the longer duration of the problem(s), the longer it will take for that boy to make significant as well as lasting changes. Typical duration of treatment for boys under my care ranges from 6 months – 2 years. So, sticking with treatment, getting to the root of the problem, and then resolving it is definitely in the best interest of your son as well as family. Yet, other parents I have interacted with initially didn’t understand how frequently changing MHP’s was actually counterproductive. Obviously, the inherent problem with this approach is that you’re starting all over again every time you consult a new MHP. However, because children and teens develop a close relationship with MHP’s who help them solve problems, these kids and teens often have difficulty transitioning to a new MHP. Consequently, if you change MHP’s too many times, your son will quickly learn not to invest in future MHP’s as well as in the treatment process. So, be proactive. Research whom you consult and how they conduct business, as well as examine the treatment decisions you make as a parent so that your son’s struggles are short-lived and his future is bright! The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. — Gandhi
January is National Pet Training Month! by Dr. Doug Pernikoff, DVM
S
tatistics show that most new puppies, kittens and adult critters enter our homes during the period from Thanksgiving through the Christmas Holiday and New Years. Whether acquired from a breeder, or rescued from one of many rescue groups in the area, we pet owners are faced with the reality of a new pet in our homes. We should never assume that our new pets, even adult versions, are properly trained and ready to fit into our scheduled house events. Don't expect them to know the rules of the house either! I always remind new pet owners that puppies and kittens are like newborns, neither physically or intellectually mature. A basic premise in training is that the more often our pets are successful at whatever action we are imposing or training to, the sooner they are learning. That implies and mandates a responsibility upon the pet owner. You need to be consistent and persistent in your training exercises. Just as we do in working with our own children as they grow and develop, we must be patient, compliant in our training methods and yet, firm in our expectations. For either new adult rescues or young critters, crate training is a great first action. The crate is the actionable metaphor for the wild carnivore's den space. It should be tight and comfortable. If the crate is too large, the animal will sit in one space and pee or poop in the remaining area. Just use a blanket or sleeping bag to kill dead space. Again, the available space should be just enough for your pet to lay comfortably. You should schedule to ALWAYS follow the same steps. Take the pet out of the crate, and before there is a chance to play, put on your lead and walk him/her outside, verbally encouraging the critter to pee or poo, whatever terms you prefer to assign? Do not allow outside play at this time. Until the animal learns that OUTSIDE is a place of work first and foremost, then freedom to romp and roam are prohibited. This may only take one to two weeks with bright individuals. After a successful stool or urination episode, you can bring the pet in and play for a bit, always with controlled supervision. If there is no yard deposit, then bring the pet in and place him/her back into the crate for just a few minutes. Repeat the entire exercise again. You will get success soon enough. If you are still confused about crate training, best to contact your veterinarian for guidance. Another consideration in training is understanding that many rescue animals arrived in that dilemma for a reason. Often, it has to do with bad behaviors. I also warn new adoptees that most animals adopted into a new home, go through a honeymoon period, when their own fear and insecurity keeps them behaving cautiously, and with apparent good behaviors. Initially, common sense should guide you to partition your new pet's freedoms. The last thing you want is furniture or drapery destruction. Or, if the pet turns out to be an avid chewer, you may end up at the emergency clinic, spending a ton of dollars to remove that kitchen towel you left hanging, with all those
good smells and tastes saturated within it. Social training to introduce your new pet to other animals is another critical action to impose ASAP. The best time to initiate your new pup to other critters is anywhere from 9-11 weeks when they are particularly active in accepting socialization opportunities. If you have a rescue, be sure to keep a good lead on and either join a training class or cautiously visit public spaces like pet shops or maybe your local dog park. Always keep control until you get a sense of how socialized your pet is. Cats are a game unto themselves. I tend to find that passive socializing between cats is better. Or, sit down with your cat in one lap and your dog under someone elses control. Make it a quiet space and let them begin to socialize with your supervision. Many dogs tend to hoard toys, or even the food bowl, as their very personal possession. This kind of territoriality can lead to aggressive behaviors, when you least expect them. The best lesson here is to always keep your guard up. Even puppies can develop aggressive territoriality surrounding food, treats or toys. In my mind, that is a big NO NO!! Nip it in the bud. People often ask about the type of training treat required. I feel that in most cases a good hug or petting is as rewarding as a physical food treat. In the event that you choose to use a food reward, then I always suggest simply using the very kibble food you provide as part of their regular diet. Most of the time, the action of rewarding is as important as the product used. Another common question regards the use of pinch collars or other chokers in order to train and control your pet. Although they look barbaric, the typical pinch collar can be used very effectively in training larger and stronger dog breeds. Another great alternative is the gentle leader nylon collar that fits both around the muzzle and the neck in simultaneous fashion. Together, these site controls appear to encourage immediate response and excellent control of even the most difficult, energy driven individuals. I consider a simple choker collar as dangerous and inappropriate for most dogs. When possible, I prefer to either use the gentle leader device, or a harness, to avoid damage to the trachea and other related anatomy of the neck region. In summary, I applaud all new pet owners, especially those folks willing to take in a rescue critter. There are still over 6-8 million feral dogs euthanized in shelters nationwide. But, the responsibilities associated with any new pet are many. Good vet care, proper nutrition and appropriate training actions are all necessary components of proper pet care. If you invest in the critter emotionally and financially, then do it right!!! Enjoy the New Year and Have Fun with your New Family Pets!! Pets And Winter
P
ets are happiest and healthiest when kept indoors, especially during extreme cold snaps. In many areas, winter is a season of bitter cold and numbing wetness. The best prescription for winter's woes is to keep your dog or cat inside with you and your family. The happiest dogs are those who are taken out frequently for walks and exercise but kept inside the rest of the time. Don't leave pets outdoors when the temperature drops. During walks, short-haired dogs may feel more comfortable wearing a sweater. No matter what the temperature is, windchill can threaten a pet's life. Pets are sensitive to severe cold and are at risk for frostbite and hypothermia during extreme cold snaps. Exposed skin on noses, ears and paw pads can quickly freeze and suffer permanent damage. A dog or cat is happiest and healthiest when kept indoors. If for some reason your dog is outdoors much of the day, he or she must be protected by a dry, draft-free shelter that is large enough to allow the dog to sit and lie down comfortably but small enough to hold in his/her body heat. The floor should be raised a few inches off the ground and covered with cedar shavings or straw. The doorway should be covered with waterproof burlap or heavy plastic. Courtesy of The Humane Society

January 15 VISuAL JourNALING: uSING IMAGES To Go DEEpEr ThAN WorDS Learn to move beyond thought and words into feelings and intuitive knowledge...even if you can’t draw. Thursday evenings. January 15, 2015 – February 19, 2015. 7:009:00pm for (6 weeks) Words interpret our feelings; images reveal them. Imagery is our body-mind-spirit connection’s primary means of communication. Feelings always communicate information if we are willing to listen. Emotions repressed from the past remain stored away in our bodies, and can cause physical symptoms of varying severity, including physical pain, illness, weight concerns, depression, anxiety, panic or fear or intense reactions towards our loved ones. Often, just the act of getting in touch with how something really feels inside your body – rather than how you think it feels – is enough to offer a sense of relief and bring about great changes in our lives and relationships. Visual journaling can be used to: • Reduce stress • Release anger • Resolve conflicts • Get in touch with feelings and intuition • Give voice to your soul. No artistic ability required! Register early as space is limited! Classes held at First Congregational Church WG 10 W. Lockwood Ave. Webster Groves, MO 63119. Class will run for 6 weeks and clients will need to bring an 11”x 14”unlined journal the first night of class. For more info: 314.761.5310 or kateschroederlpc@gmail.com or www.kateschroederlpc.com. For more information on the BioMat Call 314-725-6767
The BioMat’s quantum energetics allows the body to fight disease and heal with a naturally strong and efficient immune system. It is composed of 17 layers of technology, combining Far Infrared Rays (FIR), negative ions and amethyst crystals. Time spent on the mat relieves pain and joint stiffness, reduces stress and fatigue, boosts the immune system, burns calories and many other healthful benefits. Infrared Rays, nature’s invisible light and most
beneficial light wave, penetrate skin and increase circulation to detoxify the body of harmful toxins. The FIR can increase blood flow and clean the arteries (which means it can help lower blood pressure), release toxins, increase metabolism, heal soft tissue and relax muscles. Negative Ions are Nature’s Energizer. Ion particles cleanse and purify the air we breathe. Amethyst bolsters the production of the hormones
and strengthens the cleansing organs, the circulatory system and blood, the immune system and body metabolism. Be proactive about your health and well being. A good nights sleep on the BioMat or a mere 30 minute nap, can go a long way to ensuring a healthier, happier you. Call The Center for Mind, Body & Spirit to schedule an appointment to try the BioMat. 314.725.6767.

Our approach to holistic health includes the entire body and the oral cavity is no exception. We are dedicated to serving our patients and promoting a level of health care that carefully evaluates and reviews the use of dental materials, dental procedures and also offers dietary and nutritional support for each and every individual that is seen in our office.
Did you know that examining the mouth can reveal the presence of illnesses or unstable conditions in other areas of the body? If you feel like you’ve just about exhausted all your options in your search for better health, have your mouth examined with a different approach in mind. Get motivated, get educated, and get ready to participate in a
health-oriented lifestyle that will provide dental alternatives and a nutritional foundation designed to help support your own body’s healing powers.
The focus of holistic dentistry is to consider the mouth as a part of the whole body. We use materials and methods that are more compatible biologically with the body instead of the traditional dental materials. Examples of non-compatible materials are mercury fillings, non-precious heavy metal crowns, bridges and partials or dentures. Alternatives to fluoride are used
for the prevention of cavities. Proper alignment of the jaws and teeth are the foundation of how the body perceives itself in space. The result of improper alignment can result in symptoms of headache, ears ringing, loss of hearing, pain in the head and neck and clenching or grinding of the teeth. Good nutrition is inseparable for good
health. If your diet consists of food and drink made with white flour, sugar and no fresh fruits and vegetables, your body is likely to be acidic with resultant more medical and dental problems. For your dental evaluation contact our office for an appointment by calling 636-4589090 or email at cherryhillsdds@yahoo.com.
