Dog Days of May and Other Musings

O

ur long awaited Spring has finally sprung. And plants and people are popping with delight. May is one of the busiest months of the year, next to October. There is so much going on but none as tail wagging as Bark in the Park, May 17 in Forest Park. What a great job the Humane Society of Missouri does for this event. And for the animals who need help and rescuing all year long. I have to admit that I might be more of a cat person than a dog person. But it is a narrow race. We have four cats and two dogs, all of which were orphaned or rescued. Our Border Collie Suk,i herds the cats around the house like sheep, and our WienerLab Shalya has her long black snout into everything. Last week she nipped a toad in the backyard and immediately began to foam at the mouth. After a quick internet search we discovered that toads are toxic to dogs and that many pets die every year from eating them. Shayla luckily just got an educational dose of toad defense and after plenty water and some rest she was soon outside ferreting out bunnies from under the deck. But don’t throw her a tennis ball. Seems her mixed breed is not programmed to catching anything tossed to her. She could play outfield for the Chicago Cubs. May is also the month of Mother’s Day. And I would like to mention my four favorite moms. My mother Mary Ann, who if alive would have loved being a

by Rick Hotton

great-grandmother. My wife Niki who has taken the meaning of “mom” to a whole new level (as if mom’s don’t already have the toughest job in the world.) My daughter Natalie who is the new mom to my 9 month-old grandson Jackson. Natalie, your stock has risen, since you became a mother. My mother-in-law Jan, who did such a great job preparing my wife Niki for motherhood, and for being her best friend. And to all you moms out there, GREAT JOB, for all that you do. Us dads are in awe, whether we say it enough or not. And perhaps a bit envious. From the sublime to the ridiculous. Hey, what’s up with this Adult Onset Allergies? I wasn’t allergic to anything growing up. I could stick my face in freshly cut grass, or sniff the most fragrant flowers, nothing. And now as a beautiful Spring blooms, I welcome it with a snoot full of snot, a head of lead and an obnoxious cough. Sort of like having a hangover and a cold at the same time. So I broke down and I am taking an allergy pill. Have to say it works. But I am so disgusted that my body has forsaken me and I have to once again support the pharmaceutical industry. I have a netty pot and I have tried all the “natural remedies.” I am feeling better but I miss my immune system of my youth. We are working to make our suburban yard into a habitat garden and are planting more natives to attract more birds and butterfly species. As people planted more and more ornamentals and non natives over the years they were inadvertently destroying the habitat and food chain for native wildlife. Check out Mitch Leachman’s article on page 9 for more information on what you can do. Oh, and The Healthy Planet magazine begins our 18th year of publishing in May. Now with my 17 years at the Webster-Kirkwood Times and my time here at the Planet, I am working on my 35th year in publishing. And loving every minute of it! Honor Your Mother,

Students Rally Around a Challenge to Green Their School By Hope Gribble, USGBC-MGC Education & Green Schools Coordinator

S

tudents at North Kirkwood Middle School rallied around the challenge to green their school. The challenge was the Green Schools Quest, and their aim was manifold. Not only did the students want to create a learning environment that was healthier for the planet, but also one that was healthier for people, would save the school district money and bring the community closer together. Their efforts began with the click of a button. The students’ teacher, Chris Hooker, entered their class into the 2013-14 Green Schools Quest, a challenge issued by the U.S. Green Building Council-Missouri Gateway Chapter to public and private schools within the region to imagine and implement, with the help of green mentors, the most creative, effective and no or low cost sustainable practices for their schools. The Green Schools Quest then served as a framework to focus their efforts. The school was paired up with sustainability professional and volunteer Todd Bundren who served as Green Mentor and worked with the students and teacher throughout the school year. Once the team was established, they identified the unique needs and resources of their school, set goals, and took action. All the while, recording their progress and engaging the community in their efforts. The team at NKMS decided to engage in three initiatives: a lights off campaign encouraging teachers and students to turn the lights off when not in use, a no idling initiative which educated and incentivized parents to turn their cars off when picking up students, and a composting program for lunchtime food waste. Students had a lot to say about their experience. “My experience with the green schools quest was life changing. I learned so many things about the earth and how it functions,” remarked 7th Grader Mary. Fellow

classmate Alex said, “I used to think that all we could do to change the environment was ask the government about something North Kirkwood Middle School and hope they placed 1st place in the Middle approve. But School division. now I see that we can do more than that. I now see that a person can take his/her own initiative and help the environment.” And Chad commented, “During our project, we had to figure out how much our lighting in our daily life costs. When we got our numbers, we were amazed by the fact of how much money we were spending. Knowing this, we started to care a little more, and the more we knew, the more we wanted to learn and do. This competition really changed the way we think.” NKMS was one of nearly 40 participating schools in the inaugural year of the Green Schools Quest, and came in 1st place in the Middle School division. Additional winners include: Elementary – 1st Forsyth School, 2nd W.W. Keysor Elementary, 3rd Tillman Elementary; Middle – 2nd The College School, 3rd The Governor French Academy and Maplewood Richmond Heights Middle School; High*– 1st Parkway Central, 2nd SLUH; Early Childhood - Maplewood Richmond * Heights Early Childhood Center. USGBC-MGC is looking for both schools and mentors to participate in the 2014-15 Green Schools Quest. Applications open May 2014. Projects will begin October 2014 and run through mid-March 2015. Each team will document their project’s impact throughout the Quest’s parameters and enter their results at the conclusion of the challenge. Cash awards and recognition await the student teams’ responses to the challenge. Learn more at www.usgbc-mogateway.org/greenschool-quest.

The Living Colors of Spring by Linda Wiggen Kraft

Linda Wiggen Kraft • Green & Growing Editor

S

pring isn’t just when the weather turns warm, it is when the world bursts into color. The grays and browns of winter turn into the purple, blue, green, yellow, orange and red of spring blossoms. These bursts of colors aren’t just any colors, they are living colors. Colors that have a life force and energy flowing through them that reflects light to the world. The amazing living color of plants goes out into the world, sending its energy into its surroundings and beyond. Like all colored objects, flowers and foliage absorb the colors of the white light of the sun except for the colors we see. A green leaf absorbs all the electromagnetic waves of color, except for the green wavelength. That

green wavelength is reflected back and goes out into the world. We see and absorb that color. Our bodies receive that color vibration just by being nearby. The beauty, joy and healing of these colors becomes one with us. How can we not feel such joy and power in Spring. The phenomenon of spring colors is beyond words. Let living colors send their energy and life force to you. For inspiration enjoy the living colors of these photos, but better yet go outside to absorb the living colors of springtime. St. Louis Composting Celebrates International Compost Awareness Week With a Heaping Helping of Compost By Sara Ryan St. Louis Composting

S

t. Louis Composting invites you to join in celebrating International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW), May 5-11, 2014. This year’s theme is “Compost! The Solution to Sustainable Soil and Water”. Planned activities span the globe with celebrations scheduled across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia and Ireland. Composting advocates will encourage everyone, everywhere to compost. Come join St. Louis Composting and learn how to be more sustainable! “The Solution to Sustainable Soil and Water” for many, can mean planting a backyard vegetable garden; the ultimate way to go green. Fresh produce comes direct from the garden to your table, cutting out the middle man. As any seasoned vegetable gardener will attest, the best strategy for boosting yields is to build a better soil by conditioning with compost. Compost delivers four major benefits to the gardener, all of which help the environment: • Compost improves plant/turf quality. Compost reduces spring transplant shock and, longer term, decreases plant stress response to drought, disease and insects. Because of the intense heat generated in compost piles, compost contains no weeds, insects or insect eggs/larvae. Compost also reduces salt damage and provides nutritional balance. • The benefits of compost are long-lasting. Rain and watering cause chemical fertilizers to leach out of soil stripping it of its nutritional properties. Conversely, compost binds with the soil and releases its nutrients over a multiyear period. • Compost strengthens soil structure. Compost reduces the compaction of heavy soil, enhances sandy soil and increases both top-soil and soil fertility while rebuilding worn-out soil. Over time, compost makes any type of soil easier to work with. • Finally, compost can hold six times its weight in water, which reduces the need for irrigation during periods of drought. But, perhaps more important to remember

when planting is that using all-natural, STA-certified compost is part of a 100% efficient recycling cycle. ICAW focuses on building awareness of composting and its environmental benefits. Year after year, innovative programs improve community sustainability and promote the use of compost. Join us in celebrating International Compost Awareness Week and get hands-on with St. Louis Composting with a heaping helping of compost! To celebrate, St. Louis Composting will host events at three of our composting facilities on May 6, 7 and 10. Enjoy BBQ, snacks and veggies that grow GREAT in St. Louis Composting’s STA-Certified compost and soil blends at these three ZERO waste events… May 6 – Fort Bellefontaine facility in Florissant, Mo. y this time of year you've probably put down a dose of preemergent fertilizer and have already had to mow the lawn a few times. Everything looks great! Your yard looks healthy and green and it will stay that way, right? The reason your lawn looks thick and lush in early Spring is because it's getting everything it needs; which is a combination of cool nights and soaking rains. Your lawn thrives under these perfect conditions, but when the hot Summer sun hits and rain tapers off, parts of your lawn will look thin and dry. Non beneficial fungi will start taking over your yard and despite your best efforts your lawn will start to die. Here's what happens: When the temperature rises and rainfall drops, your lawn stresses over the lack of moisture and nutrients. The pre-emergent feeds the lawn with Nitrogen, that Nitrogen works for about five to six weeks and then is basically gone. Now, you have a lawn that has run out of its food source right before the stress

of the summer! Five to six weeks after the preemergent or weed preventer was put down, you should apply more food so that your lawn retains its healthy green color through the Summer. Nutrients, not just nitrogen, will provide all of the micro nutrients your lawn needs for Summer. Without the right food turf grass is much more susceptible to fungi and stress than a plant with the right micro-nutrients. So the secret to keep your Spring lawn looking fresh throughout the stress of Summer is to feed it with a fertilizer with a large number of micronutrients and live microbes. At Greene's Country Store we have many choices of fertilizers loaded with micro-nutrients that you can chose from. We also have a year round lawn and garden program based on testing your own soil. If you want to spend less and get out of the chemical fertilizer hamster wheel while having a much better lawn and garden, come to Greene's. Start Your Own Habitat Garden To Attract more Birds and Butterflies by Mitch Leachman Executive Director St. Louis Audubon Society

t all began almost 10 years ago, after I had moved into this my Leachman first house. A friend suggested a few plants, all Missouri natives, for a bed along the driveway. When complete, we had installed aster, coneflower, coreopsis, milkweed and penstemon, 20 plants at most, where only irises and daylilies had been previously. plants and removed nearly all the invasive bush Those few plants have been a source for counthoneysuckle at the back of the lot. Now, instead of less fascinating and inspiring moments ever since. a plain, uniform wall of honeysuckle, I have an The asters in full fall bloom draw a myriad of interesting variety of native shrubs including native bees. I look forward to my near-daily lunch beautyberry, currant, ninebark and sumac. The time visits from my home office to meditate with currant is in bloom as I write, bright yellow and oh them—green ones, yellow, black or orange, honhow fragrant. It is an important nectar source for eybees and bumble bees, even blue ones—yes, I early-arriving hummingbirds. The beautyberry said BLUE! I take pictures, study them; they fly will yield bright purple berries this fall, and I will around and next to me. I have never been stung or again be on watch for the return of the catbirds and ever felt threatened. I also recall the first time I thrashers as they stop to feed on the fruit in saw goldfinches extracting the seed from the coneadvance of their southbound migration. patches of habitat are important for our native birds, butterflies and such. News reports, online posts and broadcasts regularly tell tales of endangered plants and animals and habitat lost to development of some sort. Then, just two years ago I was encouraged to read Bringing Nature Home by Doug Tallamy, an entomologist who has studied plant-eating insects for decades. He states that installing native plants within our personal landscapes at home and work is imperative to reverse those declines. In short, native plants provide food for native insects which are an essential protein source for 96% of all our land birds, including every Missouri songbird. Just think about that. Cardinals, goldfinches and even hummingbirds eat insects. They must. Their babies need protein to build muscle and

bone; seeds and nectar alone won’t cut it. But a juicy plant-eating caterpillar packs lots of protein, more per pound than beef. Makes sense for a small bird to look for a tiny package of protein. Funny thing is lots of other animals eat insects, too—reptiles, amphibians, foxes, owls and even fish! Of course, the fish aren’t in most neighborhoods, but all the rest could be. Take a look at your home, your workplace, your worship house. Is there room for a habitat garden? I started with just 60 square feet—not much at all. Are you hungry for something more in your landscape, more inspiring than turf grass or ivy? Perhaps hummingbirds and butterflies or catbirds and tree frogs. If creating a living landscape sounds daunting, there are plenty of resources available including the Bring Conservation Home program from St. Louis Audubon. Just visit www.stlouisaudubon.org/BCH for details. The birds and butterflies will thank you, and you’ll be glad you did. For more information please contact the St. Louis Audubon Society, www.stlouisaudubon.org or call 314-599-7390.

EPA Recognizes

METRo LighTing With 2014 Excellence in Retailing Award

L

ocal lighting company, Metro Lighting, was honored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with the national 2014 Excellence in Retailing Award for Lighting. The award is given to organizations for their efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, resulting in significant cost savings. Award winners like Metro Lighting, Sears, Lowes and other major retailers are selected from over 20,000 organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program. Only one Excellence in Retailing Award for Lighting is given nationally and this is the third year for Metro Lighting to receive the Award. “Metro Lighting couldn’t be more proud of its fourth Energy Star award! The East & West Coasts are considered the premier green building & environmentally conscious areas of the US, coupled with the fact Missouri has one of the lowest electrical rates in the nation, it is a huge accomplishment to receive this award considering our competition,” states Nicholas Frisella, Metro Lighting’s Special Projects Manager. Missouri’s electrical rate is approximately $0.07 per kilowatt hour, almost two cents lower than the national average. The electrical rates for the states of California, New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Connecticut’s average out to be well over $0.15 per kilowatt hour, resulting in much more energy-focused consumers and retailers.* Metro Lighting is recognized for offering and marketing a wide selection of energy saving and ENERGY STAR-rated products, implementing environmentallyfocused programs such as a fluorescent light bulb and ballast recycling program, installing solar panels, installing energy saving lighting controls, offering vehicle charging stations at two locations, switching out over 10,000 incandescent bulbs to LED and participating in community events with a focus on the environment and energy savings. Metro Lighting also donated the lighting & exhaust systems to the nation’s first ever Active House located in Webster Groves, MO.

The Healthy Planet magazine • TheHealthyPlanet.com “We have a critical partnership with ENERGY STAR,” explains Frisella. “More and more of our customers are looking for products that save money and protect the environment. By offering products that have earned the ENERGY STAR we are working to fulfill our customers’ needs and saving them energy dollars, while helping address needed changes that help our environment.” Metro Lighting was recognized at an ENERGY STAR awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. in late April. About Metro Lighting Metro Lighting is a locally-owned and operated family business in St. Louis, MO. In 1967, Metro Lighting consisted of one delivery truck and a basement garage overflowing with circuit breakers, wire, and conduit. From these humble beginnings, Metro Lighting has grown into Missouri's largest lighting distributor. Metro Lighting’s eight locations serve St. Louis, St. Charles, Jefferson County & Cape Girardeau. Metro Lighting provides efficient lighting solutions to Missouri residents every day. Its American Lighting Association certified sales staff receives training from Energy Star, Ameren Missouri, IMark, NAED and numerous lighting manufacturers’ education programs. It offers a full line of Energy Star qualified light fixtures, compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL), LED recessed cans, ceiling fans and exhaust fans. Metro Lighting provides other energy efficient lighting solutions including fluorescent re-lamping and ballasting, LED technologies, occupancy sensors, dimming control solutions, commercial energy audits and much more. For more information on Metro Lighting please contact, Sarah King at 314-645-5656. About EnERgY STAR ENERGY STAR was introduced by EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants associated with energy use. Today, the ENERGY STAR label can be found on more than 60 kinds of products as well as new homes and buildings. Last year alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved $18 billion on their utility bills and prevented greenhouse gas equivalent to those of 34 million cars. Products, homes and buildings that have earned the ENERGY STAR prevent emissions by meeting strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the EPA. For more information, go to energystar.gov.

Ffresh R E S H fare FARE Spruce Up Your Salads by Kari Hartel, RD, LD Program Coordinator, Cooking Matters, Operation Food Search

E

ating salads can be a great way to make sure you’re getting your recommended daily servings of vegetables, but sometimes eating the same lackluster salad day in and day out can leave you feeling bored. Here are some tips to help you amp up the flavor and nutrients in your salads. Vary Your Greens Rather than sticking to the same type of lettuce for the base of your salad, vary the type of lettuce each time. You could also use a combination of lettuces and greens. Try to combine a lettuce that is delicate and sweet, such as butter lettuce, with a heartier, thicker, more robust lettuce or green, such as romaine or kale. These contrasting textures and flavors will excite your taste buds. Get Health Gains by Adding Grains To make your salad a well-balanced, one-dish meal, try adding some cooked, cooled whole grains. Cooked, chilled brown rice, quinoa, bulgur, wheat berries, barley, and other whole grains will add fiber, vitamins, and minerals as well as a delicious flavor and chewy texture. Make Your Own Salad Dressings Bottled salad dressings that you find in stores can be loaded with sodium and sugar. Rather than relying on store-bought salad dressings, make you own versions from scratch and store them in the fridge in small glass jars with screw-top lids. Follow this basic ratio: two parts olive or canola oil, one part acid (vinegar, lemon or lime juice, or Dijon mustard), salt and pepper, and your favorite herbs and spices.

Switch up Your Proteins While grilled chicken breast is a tasty topper for salads, it can get a little boring if it is always your go-to protein pick. Get adventurous with your protein source. Top your salad with grilled salmon or albacore tuna, which loaded with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Marinated grilled tofu adds a hefty dose of vegetarian-friendly protein. Another vegetarian protein pal is beans, which are loaded with protein, fiber, iron, B-vitamins and minerals. Don’t Forget About Fruit Fresh or dried fruits can add natural sweetness and brightness to your salads. Berries work exceptionally well, as do citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruit. Apples, especially Granny Smith, add a crisp texture and tart flavor that pairs well with vinegar-based dressings. Dried fruits are easy to add and provide a sweet, chewy element. Create Some Crunch Texture makes a huge impact on how satisfying a dish can be. Crunchy ingredients will pair well with the soft texture of lettuces. Toss in some nuts or seeds, which are chock-full of beneficial minerals, protein, and healthy fats. Think beyond the typical almond slices – throw in some roasted pumpkin seeds or soy nuts. Skip the boring store-bought, nutritionally-void croutons and create your own from old whole-grain bread. Operation Food Search is pleased to be the beneficiary of Schnucks Markets, Inc.’s seventyfifth anniversary gala on May 15th in the Khorassan Ballroom of the Chase Park Plaza. St. Louis Public Library Helps You Become Heart Smart By Kara Krekeler, Science & Technology Librarian, St. Louis Public Library

H

aving a healthy heart is key to living a healthy life. But how can you tell if your heart is healthy? And if it’s not, what can you do to make it healthy? These are some of the questions the St. Louis Public Library and its community partners hope to answer on Tuesday, May 27, during a program called Cardio Health: Risks, Intervention and Prevention. The event, which features cardiologist Dr. Angela L. Brown and pharmacist Anastasia Armbruster, takes place at 6:30 p.m. in the Auditorium at St. Louis Public Library’s Central Library, 1301 Olive St. Brown is an associate professor of medicine in the cardiology division at Washington University School of Medicine and director of the school’s section on hypertension. Armbruster is an assistant professor of pharmacy practice at St. Louis College of Pharmacy, and a clinical pharmacist specializing in cardiology and internal medicine at Missouri Baptist Medical Center. The Library and its partners have chosen to focus on cardio health because it is something that affects everyone. “It’s not just old people — it’s young people too,” Brown said. “This is the number one killer of men and women in the U.S.” Brown and Armbruster will discuss what exactly constitutes heart disease, as well as risk factors and the lifestyle interventions that can decrease someone’s chances of developing heart disease. Brown said that she hopes people will feel empowered to take charge of their heart health, noting that there are things people can do to improve their over-

all heart health and live a good-quality life. “It’s all about understanding your risk factors and knowing what you need to know to live that long, healthy life,” Brown said. Fortunately, there are a lot that individuals can do to improve their heart health. Both Brown and

Lose Weight For Summer With Hypnosis by William Mitchell, CI

H

ypnotism can be applied successfully as a tool in psychotherapy, medical and dental pain management, to enhance academic achievement, to overcome fears and stage fright, to improve sleep, to increase athletic performance and other applications, however most people think of Habit Control, smoking cessation, weight loss, nail biting etc. When I was first introduced to Hypnotism for weight loss, I was a skeptic. Then I witnessed the powerful hypnotic phenomenon in the sessions and the dramatic results of the clients. Many clients lost 20,40,50 even 100 pounds with hypnosis sessions! When I applied the very basic techniques of induction and hypnotic suggestion with clients, the immediate results were dramatic. The evidence for using Hypnotism to control habits, like overeating, was very convincing. Years later, I am still amazed when clients tap into their own “hypnotic ability” and change old habits like smoking or overeating. One client had gained 100 pounds since she stopped smoking 10 years before. She was overeating at night, so I utilized “hypnotic amnesia” and gave her the posthypnotic suggestion that after her evening meal she would “forget” about food until morning. This woman lost 103 pounds in one year. Another client was drinking enormous amounts of soda pop each day. So I used a “hypnotic aversion” technique so he would have zero desire to drink soda pop. He lost 40 pounds very quickly and 4 years later he still has not gone back to drinking soda pop. Some habits are so unconscious Hypnotism is the very best approach. In many cases I help the clients make unconscious habits into conscious thoughts and decisions. My clinic, Personal Motivation Hypnosis Clinic www.hypnoprogram.com has been helping clients for

Structural Integration and Being Seated by Sally and Alan Cina

O

ne of the many things we educate our clients about is how to sit. Good posture while seated is very helpful to ones overall health. Many of us sit too far back and are sitting on the back points of the sitting bones and the tip of the tailbone. This can feel normal. When we sit too far back, then the fight or flight portion of the nervous system is slightly activated. By sitting on the sitting bones we calm the nervous system because sitting on the tailbone impacts the spinal cord. It is easiest to find your sitting bones on a hard surface. Start by sitting slouchy, then slowly rock your pelvis forward. You should feel the points you are slouching on get longer by approximately an inch. Then check to make sure your body is upright. Your lower back may feel slightly curved forward that is good. When you have good seated posture the bones of the spine are stacked on top of one another. This stacking is great, as it allows the muscles and nervous system to relax. You can be more present to what is happening around you. You can sit for longer periods of time and use less energy. Your shoulders and neck can relax too. Here is an experiment you can do to observe the difference in slouching and being upright. Slouch in your chair and say something important to you like ”I am present.” Then find your sitting bones and repeat your phrase. What do you notice? Finding your sitting bones can be done in the car too. By leaning towards the steering wheel, extending up and rocking your pelvis forward and back - do this until you come into contact with your sitting bones. It assists in being able to drive comfortably for long periods of time. By practicing being on your sitting bones as much as you can, you start relaxing more and your body will have more energy to do other things and you will feel clearer. You will be noticed with excellent posture. For personal assistance in developing a great relationship with your sitting bones call us to schedule your appointment today. Sally and Alan have been serving the St. Louis community since 1997. You can learn more about us, our schedule, and more at www.RolfSTL.com.

ANY INFO ON B-12? REMEDIES FOR LEG CRAMPS

HERB LADY Cathy Schram

Q: Can you tell me why there is such a price difference in purchasing B12? It seems to come in many different forms also. I was told I was low in B12 but I’m not even sure what it can do for me. A:Did you know that nearly 40% of Americans are deficient in Vitamin B12? There are many things that can cause this deficiency; such as: • Anyone over the age of 40 • Prescription medications, including birth control • Too much caffeine Signs of a B12 deficiency are neurological symptoms such as numbness or burning sensations, usually in the hands and feet, fatigue, poor memory, depression and poor circulation. Many people with MS and Parkinson’s benefit from using B12. B12 does come in many different forms. You want to look for a sublingual form; tablets, liquid, spray form or in a convenient strip that also acts as a breath freshener. These are all highly bio-available because it goes directly into your blood stream, whereas a pill must be absorbed in the stomach and intestines, thereby reducing the amount that goes into your bloodstream. Now, for the most important part. The reason for the price difference is that there are two types of B12, cyanocobalamin and methylcobalamin. You always want

to take methylcobalamin. This type is the most efficient type of B12 and can be properly utilized by the body. The other type has to borrow a methyl donor and go through several steps to be absorbed. The methyl type is more expensive, but remember, you get what you pay for in the vitamin world. You want it to work for you, so it is worth the extra pennies. Q: Do you know of any remedies for leg cramps? A:Yes. My favorite remedy is an old-fashioned Amish remedy called “Stops Leg & Foot Cramps” by Caleb Treeze Organic Farm. It consists of apple cider vinegar, ginger and garlic juice. I have to be honest, I don’t really care for the taste, but by the time I swallow it, my cramp is gone! It is almost magical. You can mix it in water if it tastes too strong. I highly recommend it. This herb information is for health education purposes only. It is not intended to replace the services of licensed health practitioners. Consult with a physician for any condition that requires professional care. Do you have questions about herbs or vitamins? 2014 Earth Day Action Grants Announced By Cassandra Hage Executive Director, St. Louis Earth Day

ompetition among proposals was tough this year! In addition to having many qualified and exciting proposals, St. Louis Earth Day experienced a dip in funding that decreased the amount of available grant funds. Many thanks to the William A. Kerr Foundation; with the Foundations assistance, St. Louis Earth Day provided $6,000 in grants to support five local projects! Read on to learn how you can ensure that all qualified proposals are funded in 2015! Bike Rest at CommuniTree Gardens Nursery (Creve Coeur Park) - Forest reLEAF This project leverages partnerships and matching funding to enhance an underutilized information kiosk, transforming the space into a bike rest area, complete with a bike rack commissioned by St. Louis ArtWorks, an organization that employs inner city youth to create artistic, one-of-a-kind bike racks from used bicycle parts. Area improvements include a picnic table and shade trees. The kiosk will educate visitors about trees, rain gardens and the environment. Container Garden Educational Program St. Anthony Food Pantry St. Anthony Food Pantry breaks the mold by teaching clients how to maintain container gardens, since many do not have the space for an in-ground garden. The staff plant vegetable plants from seeds and nurtures them to mature plants. Once the plants are mature, potted plants are given to food pantry clients (along with care instructions and fertilizer) so that they can enjoy fresh, home-grown produce throughout the season. Parking Lot Native Landscaping Francis Howell Middle School Students in the Character Connection Class will plant native ground cover along three sets of staircases that connect two parking lots where soil erosion is occurring. Students and the district grounds crew will monitor and maintain the plantings until they become

established. This project will educate students and faculty about native plants, stabilize the eroding soil around the stairs and demonstrate the beauty and practicality of native planting in various applications. Sustainable Backyard Tour This tour coordinates dozens of backyard and garden sites that will be open to the public for a free, selfguided tour demonstrating the many ways St. Louisarea residents can utilize their yards in a more ecofriendly, sustainable way to provide food for their families, wildlife habitat, relaxation and visual appeal, all while minimizing impacts on the environment and the communities in which they live. Tour sites showcase a range of green living practices, including low-impact lawn care, composting and using recycled materials creatively, organic gardening, chicken and beekeeping, gardening with native plants, mushrooms, fruit & nut trees, as well as rainwater conservation, pesticide and herbicide reduction, renewable energy production and backyard habitat creation. (June 22, 2014, 11 to 4 p.m.) Vegetable Starts Here - Gateway Greening Vegetable Starts Here will provide community and youth gardeners with affordable access to seasonal vegetable plants, including onion slips, potato seed, sweet potato slips, garlic bulbs, and fall plant starts, for use in their own gardens. Gardeners will be empowered by raising their own food and will be educated on proper growing techniques through customized growing guide handouts and seasonally held planting and harvesting workshops. Help us reach our goal of $12,000 for 2015 Earth Day Action Grants. Money raised during Earth Day Eve and the Earth Day Festival will determine available funds for the next grant cycle. Make Earth Day every day by enabling grassroots projects to spring to life! To donate you can call 314-282-7533 or email info@stlouisearthday.org or donate online: http://www.stlouisearthday.org/support/donate/. An Integrated Approach To Healing & Wellness

Deborah Zorensky, MS, RD, LD, CCN - Owner

Cyndy Knapp Keesee and Steffie Knapp Littlefield Co-Owners

hese two sisters are co-owners of a 3rd generation cattle ranch turned vineyard and winery. Edg-Clif Farms added the vineyard and winery as the family looked for a value-added project for their beloved farm. Creating a vineyard and winery is exciting as well as demanding. Their daily routines can run the gamut from working in the field planting, training, pruning and harvesting to working in the winery with up to 2500 gallons of product, managing a wedding and special event venue and of course waiting on customers in the tasting room. While Cyndy is researching new wine making techniques, Steffie is writing articles for magazines and soliciting wholesale accounts. On busy weekend days they can both be found serving wine, giving tours and entertaining groups. Developing a new business virtually from the roots in the ground up to the store shelf is an all encompassing task with different challenges ever day. It takes two brains and two hearts that love their farm deeply enough to devote all their energy toward making this a success. other and daughter team, Tina Philipak and Monica Stoutenborough, operate PuraVegan Cafe & Yoga together. Tina has a long history of working in the medical field and is a nurse, but left that career behind to join Monica on a venture to help people get healthy through nutrition and lifestyle changes. Monica is a Registered Yoga Teacher, Meditation Teacher, and Nutritional Education Trainer and Coach. She credits her cooking skills and ability to create new menu items to Tina, as she taught Monica at a young age how to prepare family meals. Monica started her major lifestyle change into healthy eating and yoga in 2007, and shared her discoveries with Tina. Working together in the kitchen is a dream come true for both of them and they provide much needed support to each other in the fast paced and hard working restaurant industry. Together in 2012, Tina and Monica developed a Cleanse and Detox program and made it available to their customers based upon their knowledge of digestion, food addiction, and the affects of food choices on a cellular level. They have grown the business to include health coaching services, cooking classes and made all of the weekly yoga classes available to everyone by donation, meaning students give what they can afford. Hypnotherapy Of Metro St. Louis Take Charge of Your Life Linda Weber Spradling - Cht, CCT Certified Hypnotherapist

T

he truth about hypnosis is that this self help tool helps ordinary people with ordinary, everyday problems. Hypnosis is a natural, yet altered state of mind that all people have experienced but perhaps not realized. Anyone who desires to be hypnotized can be hypnotized. Most concerns are about a fear of loss of control, mostly due to stage hypnosis demonstrations. The fact is that hypnosis actually teaches us to have more control of our thoughts and behavior I specialize in Hypnotherapy as developed by Gil Boyne and Emile Coue. I was trained at the Hypnotherapy Academy of America in New Mexico. This school is recognized world wide as a leader in this self help technique. Hypnotherapy allows the client to review and change deeply held beliefs from earlier in their lives that are limiting his/her current life. When those beliefs are subjected to the clients review and reevaluation, he/she can make different choices as to how they respond and how those memories will affect their current life choices. Thus eliminating self sabotaging behaviors and making goals easier to achieve. The Hypnotherapist's job is to assist the client in achieving their goals. We do this by using time proven hypnotic methods. Hypnotherapy is safe, effective and proven to assist with: stress reduction, smoking cessation, overeating, phobias, healing visualization, migraines, headaches, setting and achieving goals, and more!

Teaching The Art Of Living And Dying Well

Mary Magill - Founder & Executive Director

rom Vision to fruition! Alternative Hospice was founded in 2005. Mary Magill has been a nurse since 1967 and has been blessed to have experienced everything from birth to death, in all kinds of settings. She is a visionary and a people gazer, and discovered our elders are often not receiving the nurture that they need to thrive. Mary’s thought was to integrate complementary care with conventional medicine so we can address the emotional, spiritual and psycho-social needs as well as the physical needs of the patient...Together we provide true holistic care. Mary is a patient advocate, educates and empowers the patient and family so they can make informed decisions, and a passionate believer that we are spiritual, emotional and physical beings. Our goals at end of life are comfort, quality of life, emotional and spiritual support, and a death with respect, love and dignity. Pain and symptom management and comfort are of high priority. Examples of Complementary care, i.e. aromatherapy, music, compassionate touch, guided imagery, to name a few. Medicare is the primary payer source for hospice care. It does not cover complementary care. We provide it at no cost to the patient and/or family, because it’s so nurturing, and we are blessed by donations to help keep the program running. Alternative Hospice has a great respect for our elders and veterans. They are why you and I are still in the land of the free and the home of the brave, and they deserve premier healthcare, with outstanding caregivers, in a peaceful setting…that peace that passes all understanding. 1749 Gilsinn Ln., Fenton, MO 63026

Healing Touch Therapy For Animals

Maureen Keller - HTA Practitioner

y passion for helping animals started several years ago with my Rottweiler and soul mate Amalia. Amalia was a performance athlete. In my quest to keep her fit and healthy in her youth and after her retirement years, and keeping her stress and pain free, we started our journey down the road to alternative healing modalities. I decided to get formal education in the field of energy therapy. I started with Reiki levels 1& 2 and then Healing Touch for Animals. When I completed levels 1 through 4, I became an HTA animals practitioner. All HTA practitioners are conduits for healing that comes from divine intervention. The techniques are used as a cooperative adjunct with traditional veterinary medicine or as a stand-alone therapy to promote the best health care for our animals. HTA techniques help balance and clear the body's energy systems to boost the immune system and promote self-healing. Benefits of HTA include but are not limited to release from trauma, stress and anxiety as well as resolving issues of grief and separation. For the rest of the story, visit our web site. Maureen's credentials also include crystal healing level 1, completion of the beginning course towards the gain of the IDA Hammer Applied Whole Horse Hoof Care certificate program. Featuring goods perfect for self-reflection, personal enlightenment, and healthier living, this variety of items ranges from natural skincare products to metaphysical tools. At the request of friends and relatives, I began selling the items, which led to the launching of our online stores and finally our physical location in Eureka, MO. But, my true passion has been my emotional/spiritual journey. So, I began adding goods that enhanced this mind-body-spirit connection. In addition to natural body products, our store now features a variety of tools suited to various healing modalities as well as offering a large collection of pendulums, tarot & meditation card decks, engraved/inscribed inspirational stones and other items ideal for empowering someone who’s seeking emotional or spiritual self-enrichment. Kind Soap Company KIND to your skin, KIND to the earth, KIND to others. Jean Scholtes - Owner

IND soap company was born of a personal desire to use the very best, most luxurious, most natural bath and body products on myself and my family's sensitive skin. After searching most of my life for skin care and bath and body products that would not irritate my skin, I realized through trial and error that synthetic fragrance, sulfates, and many other "known skin irritants" were in the products that consistently made my skin mad. I decided that if I was going to jump in head first and start a company, I was going to do it right- from the very beginning. Not only would I create a better product, but I would do everything in my power to lessen the burden of waste on our environment. I would make sure that every product, process, and package was as recyclable, biodegradable, sustainable, eco-friendly, or "green" as possible. Besides pledging to always be honest and decent to my customers, I felt like it would be easy to build in a charitable donation to every product, and it was! - we donate 10 cents from every product sold in addition to several other charitable endeavors. KIND soap company will always be three things... Kind to your skin, Kind to the earth, and Kind to others. By following these three principals, I have created a line of products that I am not only proud of, but also thoroughly enjoy using on myself and my family. I look forward to reaching even more people in the years to come, and to continue doing what I can to make the world a better place- one bar of soap at a time.

hirley Stoll was certified by Dr. Deepak Chopra to be a Primordial Sound Meditation Instructor in 1998 and has been teaching Dr. Chopra’s meditation technique in the St. Louis metropolitan area for 16 years. Shirley has completed numerous seminars and educational programs conducted by Dr. Chopra. As a former classroom teacher, Shirley combines her love for teaching with her commitment to meditation. Some people living in an ever changing and fast paced world today are seeking peace and harmony in their lives. Meditation is an effective way to find inner peace. Practicing meditation allows you to weave silence and stillness into your mind and body. One of the most widespread myths about meditation is a belief that you must force your mind to be quiet when you meditate. Meditation is not about forcing your mind to be quiet. Meditation is finding the quiet that is within you. Research has shown that meditation is beneficial for a wide range of health problems. People who meditate on a regular basis are usually healthier. As stress is greatly reduced through meditation, our mind and body experience better health and vitality. Inner peace and reducing stress are important benefits of meditation. Other possible benefits include better sleep, reduced blood pressure, less anxiety, and improved relationships. Primordial Sound Meditation is easy to learn and is easy to practice. Make meditation part of your life and enjoy its benefits! For information on upcoming classes, call Shirley Stoll at 800-796-1144 shirlstoll@charter.net • www.MeditationConnect.com

Jackie Fokkens Hypnosis

A New View, A New You

Jackie Fokkens - Certified Hypnotherapist(CH)

have helped many people reach and surpass their personal and professional goals with hypnosis. Many times certain individuals come to see hypnosis as a "last resort" when tackling behavioral issues that are unmanageable. I am very conscious of this fact and you can be assured I will be extremely caring and personally invested in the process. I received my formal training and certification through the National Guild of Hypnotists. I have a private practice in Creve Coeur, MO. Dispelling myths is an important part of my "pre-talk" I conduct with every client. It is not "mind control" You can not get "stuck" in hypnosis. I will personally guide you through this process by simply making suggestions while under hypnosis. My clients tell me it is so soothing, they love the whole process because it is so easy. All they do is listen to the sound of my voice, concentrate and their stress melts away. People who felt weight loss was futile before hypnosis, report that their eating patterns and attitudes towards food have drastically changed. I have helped many people kick start their lives by no longer obsessing over food and are able to lose 20, 30 lbs. and more. In addition to quitting smoking and weight loss, I also treat clients in these areas: Test Anxiety, Nail Biting, Sales Performance, Stress/Anxiety, Confidence, Self-Esteem, Sports Enhancement, Insomnia, Career, Relationships and Phobias. 11457 Olde Cabin Rd Suite 345 Creve Coeur, MO 63141

Offering Physical, Mental and Psychospiritual Transformation Chris Yonker - Owner

n 1971, Chris Yonker took her first yoga class at the suggestion of a Washington University modern dance instructor. During her 20s and 30s, Chris danced, taught dance, participated in many sports, and by 1986 she was a practicing massage therapist. In the early 90s, after a trip to Kripalu Yoga Center in Lenox, Massachusetts she began to study and teach yoga in earnest. She was one of the founders of the Big Bend Yoga Center in the 90s, introducing many to the practice of yoga. In 2003 she founded YogaSource at 1500 South Big Bend in Richmond Heights. Chris has studied widely with many yoga masters and believes that yoga is a form of body work that offers potential for physical, mental and psychospiritual transformation. Accordingly, her studio offers a wide variety of classes, from Yoga Basics geared toward beginners, to Yoga Therapy classes, Yin, & Ashtanga, as well as Anusara inspired Open Level Classes and the popular Power Vinyasa classes which are taught in a heated room. She has established a group of professional teachers who are mature, well studied and grounded in the principles of yoga. The classes taught at YogaSource fall under the category of Hatha Yoga. In Hatha Yoga the physical body is used as a sort of laboratory to learn from. Since we are always evolving and changing, we all have different needs at different times so some of the classes are more concerned with details of alignment, others with strength building and others with mindfulness. Olive Oils & Vinegars Produced by Families In Europe & California

Marianne Prey - Owner

arianne Prey was a pathologist for over 24 years when she discovered the concept of an Olive Oil store during a medical trip. She has always loved to cook, and when she learned of all the health benefits of olive oil, such as being loaded with anti-oxidants and having a lowering affect on LDL cholesterol, in addition to the flavor olive oils give to food, she embarked on her second career and An Olive Ovation was born. An Olive Ovation, newly located at 8821 Ladue Road in The Colonial Marketplace, carries over 30 Extra Virgin Olive Oils, 25 different flavored olive oils, and over 50 wine, fruit, and balsamic vinegars. These oils and vinegars are produced by families on their own properties, in both Europe and California, with love, care, and generations of expertise. Come to the tasting bar where you can try every Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Vinegar available before you buy. Marianne takes pride in the fact that she personally selects each item in her store. Don’t miss her unique selection of all-natural foods, including many gluten free items, such as Italian pastas, sea salts, cheeses and crackers, local honeys, and an all-natural olive bar that cures for months – a far cry from your typical grocery olive bar. She also carries a variety of kitchen accessories, both imported and produced locally, and olive oil lotions and soaps. Consider a bottle of olive oil instead of wine for your next gift – it lasts for months and is a reminder of you with each use. Custom gift baskets are also available. 8829 Ladue Rd, Ladue, MO 63124 (314) 727-6464

Teeth and the Focal Infection Theory By Michael Rehme, DDS, CCN (Certified Clinical Nutritionist)

A

re your teeth “connected” to other parts of your body? In other words, can an abscessed or infected tooth actually cause a problem somewhere else, say your lower back, sinuses, stomach or even your heart? Focal Infection Theory (FIT) is the idea that a local infection affecting a small area of the body can lead to subsequent infections or symptoms in other parts of the body due either to the spread of the infectious agent itself or toxins produced from it. This theory became popular in the late 19th and early 20th century, especially in the field of oral medicine. However, relatively recently current consensus in the dental community changed. It now suggests that FIT is not a valid reason to remove teeth or to avoid root canals. As recently as Dougherty's 1954 Textbook of Bacteriology and Galloway's 1957 peer-reviewed JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) article on tonsillectomies, FIT was still accepted as valid. Even as late as the late 1980s, in spite of a decline in the recognition of the focal infection theory, the association of decayed teeth with systemic disease is taken very seriously. I personally believe that the focal infection theory has some merit. For many years I have observed and listened to my patients tell about their successful outcomes after the removal of hopeless teeth that were either abscessed, cracked or had extensive decay with symptoms of pain and discomfort. To my surprise not only did their mouths feel better after the offending tooth was removed but I began hearing patients comments such as, “I feel more energetic,” “my back pain is gone,” “my sinuses are cleared,” “I have regular bowel movements now.” I’m not sure what scientific tests or double blind studies can be performed that can accurately evaluate or even measure these results. However, I do know that I learn a lot by simply listening to my patients. Consistent patterns began to develop after these problematic teeth were extracted. The following testimonials are examples

of post operative assessments provided by our patients. “Prior to coming to your office, my symptoms of pain ranged from lower back pain, headaches, shoulder and neck pain. These aches and pains affect my performance on the job as well as socially. I asked to have my tooth removed (a prior root canal tooth that had been bothering me for almost one year). Rather than re-treating the root canal I decided to extract it. Once this procedure was completed I have noticed a dramatic change in my whole body. My pain in my lower back is completely gone. I have no more headaches or shoulder and neck pain.” -- Keith, 36, Male “I had an infected, cracked molar that has been a problem on and off for me for about 6 months. During this time, I also noticed both my thyroid and my heart were bothering me. My heart had been pounding for months. Within minutes after the tooth was removed my heart returned to normal and I felt better than I had in months.” -- Bob, 47, Male Biological dentistry has taught me to have an open mind when it comes to evaluating our patients’ over health and wellness. Hopefully, sooner than later, the oral cavity will receive the attention it deserves as our health care providers become more aware that the cause of their patients’ biological imbalances may have dental connections. For more patient success stories visit our website at www.toothbody.com and discover what other people are saying about the tooth body connection. What Is Permaculture? by Crystal Moore-Stevens

I

first learned the term “Permaculture” 14 years ago while a senior in high school. I was on an eco adventure in the Caribbean rainforest of Costa Rica with an environmental leadership program called Eco-Act, a program founded and facilitated by The Missouri Botanical Garden in 1981 to inspire earth stewardship in youth. We visited the Punta Mona Center for Sustainable Living and Education, an off the grid 85 acre organic permaculture farm on the Caribbean Sea. Stephen Brooks and his sister Lisa started an eco tourism business called Costa Rican Adventures. Stephen is also the founder of Kopali Organics, an organic food company dedicated to supporting small farmers and providing a highly nutritious food source to the public. Stephen has been a major catalyst in The Permaculture movement. He has taught thousands of individuals around the globe how to bring sustainability into fruition. Permaculture was a term coined by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in 1978. The term originally stood for permanent agriculture but in the last few decades, the word Permaculture has evolved into Permanent Culture. 10 concepts I learned about permaculture during my stay at Punta Mona almost 15 years ago: 1) Permaculture incorporates the existing ecosystem into the plans of development without compromising the integrity of the land, the water or the habitat of native flora and fauna. 2) Permaculture works with nature, not against it. 3) Permaculture gardens provide food for humans, animals, pollinators and food for the soil. Nitrogen fixing plants are an important component in permaculture. 4) Permaculture fosters symbiotic relationships. 5) Permaculture provides a global solution to widespread epidemics including hunger and starvation, environmental degradation, deforestation, pollution, and reliance on fossil fuels. 6) Permaculture gardens can help heal the land and its people. 7) Permaculture promotes all aspects of sustainability and focuses on how all of the solutions for a greener future can work together. Integrating alternative energy systems into small scale organic food production is just one way of carrying out permaculture concepts.

8) Permaculture promotes healthy food, clean air and clean water. 9) Permaculture focuses on the complex interrelationships within the food web. It restores our balance with the natural world. 10) Permaculture is a catalyst for a sustainable future. Anyone and everyone is capable of practicing permaculture techniques in their own lives. Growers from all around the globe are helping to heal themselves, their communities, and the environ-

ment around them by bringing permaculture to life one seed at a time. Listening to the stories of symbiotic relationships between people and people, plants and people and plants and the earth helps to define the very essence of permaculture. Illuminating the points at which all of these relationships intersect is up to us. Bridging the gap between cultural diversity and biodiversity is a key component in Permaculture. Paying homage to each other as stewards of the earth by offering support, encouragement and love is one way we can truly send out ripples of change to the world. Practice permaculture in your own backyard: • Grow an organic vegetable garden to feed your family, friends and neighbors. Use straw to mulch or practice lasagna gardening and sheet mulching to suppress weeds. • Get a rain barrel and use a rainwater catchment system to water your garden. Build simple bio swales to channel water. • Start a compost pile to produce your own organic fertilizer and reduce waste. • Plant native perennial flowers to attract pollinators. Plant native trees to clean the air and provide a habitat for wildlife. There are several free online permaculture courses. St. Louis is home to thousands of permaculture enthusiasts. The St. Louis Permaculture Guild hosts a slew of permaculture related workshops and events. Permaculture Magazine is an excellent source for ideas and inspiration. www.lavistacsa.org.

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. — Gandhi

SPrinG aLLerGieS affect Our Pets! by Dr. Doug Pernikoff, DVM

E

very year about this time, pet owners approach me and ask whether pets do indeed suffer spring time allergies, much as we humans do. And, my answer is an emphatic, YES!!! The pollens released from grasses, flowers and trees can impact your dogs and cats. I often explain that allergies, or the allergic condition, referred to as 'atopy', is a body's immune system reacting to chemicals in our environment, often protein or proteins mixed with lipids or fat related cells. More commonly, they are referred to as 'allergens'. Pets can be exposed to allergens by direct physical contact to the skin surface, as might occur when your dog lies in grasses; by ingestion of certain food components; by injection as occurs with a bee or wasp stings; by insect bites like fleas or ticks; by inhalation into the lungs, and more. The signs of atopy in animals are often expressed by draining, weepy eyes, by smelly ear infections, or, as skin problems like hot spots, and chewing at the coat or feet. Diagnosing specific causes of atopy or allergy in your pet may not be a simple process. Sometimes the physical distribution of lesions may offer suggestion to cause. As mentioned above, should Fido develop very regionalized irritation to his/her tummy, one would strongly consider a grass allergy contact dermatitis. More generalized symptoms, as referred to herein, would make one think of something inhaled or ingested. Food allergies would be more persistent year round, however. Your veterinarian may suggest very specialized allergy testing through a blood test. In this manner, one can identify a whole list of potential allergens that are impacting, or could impact your pet. Food trials are often employed to rule out that group of possible allergens. Managing and treating allergies can be a real challenge. Preventatively, the simple process of wiping down your pets coat and paws after being outside this time of year, may cut down the incident of contact borne allergies. In more serious conditions, pet owners may consider incorporating portable hepa filters in the home, that work to remove aerosolized allergens from your pet's environment. Your veterinarian often reaches first to treat a specific condition brought on by allergies, like yeast or bacterial ear infections, or staphylococcus dermatitis. Along with this very directed approach, there are a number of antihistamine products which may significantly help your pet combat his/her allergy issues. Food additives, like Omega 3 supplements, can prove very useful in improving skin condition as well. Allergy testing mentioned here might guide your vet to suggesting a prolonged series of specific allergy shots in order to familiarize

the body's immune response to these chemicals, so the response to exposure is not so dramatic. Further, there are various protocols that incorporate pharmaceuticals like steroids that will retard the body's immune response, and can be very effective when used correctly. Over use of certain drugs can prove harmful to your pet, so please be cautious to medicate ONLY under the direct supervision of your veterinarian. Yes, spring time can be a challenge for our pets as they become exposed to so many seasonal influences. The key is good preventative management and a quick response to symptoms. Get to your vet early in the game before any allergic condition sets in and you find yourself playing catch up in order to keep your beloved pet comfortable and symptom free through the spring time onslaught of environmental allergens. Enjoy the season with all the beauty that comes with it. Have a great and enjoyable spring season! Fondly, Dr. Doug Douglas S. Grace of the Deer

M

ay is alive with sights, sounds and smells - the firefly, birdcall, flower bloom, the doe and fawn. Every day I thrill at nature's displays. As weather brings you outdoors, may you be graced by the Deer. Be watchful as you drive the roads and look for them at Deer crossing sign. If they are nibbling on your suburban landscape, consider planting Deer-resistant ornamental species. Since we often share a habitat, we must learn to live together.

Our farm has herds of Deer grazing upon it. Their trails are easy to find - trodden paths through tall grasses extending into the cover of the forest. They are stately creatures of place and habit, visiting the same watering holes and bedding down in familiar soft spots. Their hoof prints, antler rubbings, nibbled weeds mark their passing. Deer have extremely keen senses that help them survive. They are acutely aware of their surroundings and listen to the other creatures around them. Blending well with their environment, they sense every sound and movement. Observing them can help you refine your own senses and intuition. Deer wisdom brings the ability to be vigilant, move quickly, and trust your instincts. Humans and Deer have had a long relationship. Deerskin was used for clothing, shelter and drums as the meat fed the people. Deer Clans honored the Deer of ancient earth with cave paintings, rib bone rattles and ceremonial masks. Archeological digs in Europe have unearthed

31 mummies tattooed with Deer motifs. Ancient shamans considered Deer the oldest animal and a symbol of regeneration because of the stag’s ability to shed and regrow antlers each year. St. Patrick and his followers invoked The Deer’s Cry, a moving prayer that would strengthen and protect. Finn McCool, ancient forest hero and master of animals, ran with kindred who walked as Deer. The Huichol Indians of Mexico revere the Dance of the Deer, an intense sacred dance that opens the doorway to the Divine. The Deer Clan of the Cherokee is the keeper of Deer Medicine. As trackers, they teach of the Deer and its habitat, including its self-sacrifice to provide the tribe with food and clothing. As messengers, they teach the knowledge of grace, compassion and unconditional love. Deer holds the heart-space of the Great Spirit. Deer can teach us about quiet dignity and gentleness of spirit. People who relate to the Deer are often intuitive, sensitive, and have well developed perceptions. They exhibit generosity, empathy and elegance; understand what’s necessary for survival; have gratitude for life and the ability to surrender to the higher good. They seem to walk with an inner light that dispels all shadows. Those drawn into kinship with the Deer Clan tend to be poets, storytellers, and seekers bringing back what has been buried, lost and taken. Deer are one of the most fascinating creatures on earth. Presiding over the sovereignty of the forest, their noble presence embodies the wild passions within all of nature. May the Deer forever run wild and free. Our approach to holistic health includes the entire body and the oral cavity is no exception. We are dedicated to serving our patients and promoting a level of health care that carefully evaluates and reviews the use of dental materials, dental procedures and also offers dietary and nutritional support for each and every individual that is seen in our office.

Did you know that examining the mouth can reveal the presence of illnesses or unstable conditions in other areas of the body? If you feel like you’ve just about exhausted all your options in your search for better health, have your mouth examined with a different approach in mind. Get motivated, get educated, and get ready to participate in a

health-oriented lifestyle that will provide dental alternatives and a nutritional foundation designed to help support your own body’s healing powers.

The focus of holistic dentistry is to consider the mouth as a part of the whole body. We use materials and methods that are more compatible biologically with the body instead of the traditional dental materials. Examples of non-compatible materials are mercury fillings, non-precious heavy metal crowns, bridges and partials or dentures. Alternatives to fluoride are used

for the prevention of cavities. Proper alignment of the jaws and teeth are the foundation of how the body perceives itself in space. The result of improper alignment can result in symptoms of headache, ears ringing, loss of hearing, pain in the head and neck and clenching or grinding of the teeth. Good nutrition is inseparable for good

health. If your diet consists of food and drink made with white flour, sugar and no fresh fruits and vegetables, your body is likely to be acidic with resultant more medical and dental problems. For your dental evaluation contact our office for an appointment by calling 636-4589090 or email at cherryhillsdds@yahoo.com.

There’s “LOTS” to See and Do in the Arts World Coming Up Soon

H

ave you ever noticed that vacant lot on Washington, across the street from The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts? Rather than seeing a vacant lot, the Pulitzer staff viewed it as a blank canvas. Joining with the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University for the PXSTL design-build competition, LOTS was created. Designed by Freecell Architecture, LOTS is a temporary structure which serves as a destination for activity on the formerly vacant space. During the opening celebration on May 9 (7-9 p.m.), activities will include a dance performance by students from Grand Center Arts Academy’s top dance ensemble as well as a conversation with grant recipients for community programs. While visiting LOTS, notice the many art venues in the vibrant Grand Center area. If you care to see more and get some exercise at the same time, mark your calendar for May 31. The Tour de Museum, guided by Trailnet, leads bicyclists of all ages through St. Louis on a fun route that gives riders tours, programs and activities at some of the city’s best museums. The route includes stops at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art

This year’s Shakespeare Festival St. Louis planned to give its attendees a double-outdoortreat with not one, but TWO of the bard’s best plays. According to Directors Bruce Longworth and Tim Ocel, the chance to play the whole arc, from Prince Hal in Henry IV Part 1 through Henry V, is a rare one. “Every actor wants to complete the story, and this offers the chance to do so,” Longworth said. St. Louis native Jim Butz plays the expansive role of Prince Hal/King Henry V. “Jim totally understands the progression of the young Prince Hal into King Henry V,” Ocel said. “As a human being, he has access to all the parts of his youth, but also has the reality and sins of being a grown-up. When you couple that with being a skilled and intelligent actor, it makes for an exciting time in the rehearsal hall, and a terrific journey through a good decade of history.” A must-see for May is Dance St. Louis’ Spring to Dance. Where else can you see cutting-edge dance performances by 30 professional companies from across the country without breaking your budget (Really? Just $15 a night?!). The lineup changes each night, so you’ll want to attend at the Touhill Performing Arts Center more than one night. Red Light Therapy

Photo Rejuvenation or Red Light Therapy

is the use of light to create an anti-aging effect on the skin and is quickly becoming recognized as one of the safest, fastest and most affordable ways to achieve younger, more vibrant looking skin. Physicians and aestheticians agree, it is the most powerful and effective way to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the skin. Visible red (620nm-700nm) light shows at least 24 different positive changes at a cellular level. Red light penetrates into the derma layer of the skin, energizing the cells, thereby helping to create collagen, which helps to plump up the skin, and elastin, which helps to firm the skin and diminish fine lines and wrinkles.

Red Light Therapy Benefits: • Restores skin cells • Reduces fine lines, scars, acne, wrinkles, stretch marks and age spots • Stimulates collagen synthesis • Smooths and reduces cellulite deposits

• Treats seasonal affective disorders • Increases moisture retention • Increases blood circulation • Increases lymphatic system activity • Decreases skin flaws like Psoriasis, Eczema and Rosacea

PAIN RELIEF: • Herniated and Bulging Discs • Osteoarthritis • Fibromyalgia • Joint and Muscle pain • Inflammation • Nerve and Sports injuries • Neck pain and stiffness • Wounds and damaged skin • Kills bacteria
