season Of memories

A

fter the last pumpkin is carved and the Halloween costumes are put back in the steamer trunk for another year, it’s time to dust off the cookbooks and prepare for the holiday smorgasbord. Thanksgiving was always a special time for the Lester and Barnard clans when I was growing up. The old phrase, “too many cooks” did not apply at our family gatherings. There was no one “spoiling the broth.” In fact, Thanksgiving at the Barnard Ranch on West Drive came complete with three of the best Chefs of that era: my mother Mary Ann, my grandmother Hallette, and my aunt Begie. What must have been a 22 pound turkey roasted away in the oven while Mary Ann warmed up her famous Green Beans & Bacon. The beans had been simmering overnight so the combination of beans, bacon and onion had all the time they needed to meld together to create a mouth-watering green bean medley that has been passed down from generation to generation. Hallette (we called her Nana), was always in charge of the candied yams and the dinner rolls, that were of course made from scratch. And let me tell you, it is no easy feat getting those rolls to rise. She would fret over it, and they always turned out perfectly light and fluffy. Aunt Begie boiled and mashed the potatoes and made sure there was a southern-inspired touch to the meal from Oklahoma roots. I know she loved to

bake great pies that went fast at a table of 18 with plenty of Jims and Bills. And I can’t recall who made the gravy, but I would guess it was our hostess Begie. It was so good dripping off our roasted turkey and filling up that hole in our mashed potatoes. The kids all liked the while meat, but my mother and I like the dark meat. There was nothing better than working on a turkey leg for half an hour. The candied yams were perfectly caramelized and the cranberry sauce was fresh and tart. I remember the eggnog tasting a bit sharp, but then again it was a sip from my mother’s glass. The butter melted evenly over the warm dinner rolls that were used to sop up gravy remnants from our plates. The chefs offered up giblet gravy, so we had to pour around those mysterious pieces of fowl. And the pies, pumpkin and apple, topped with ice cream. No wonder I would fall asleep in front of the fire after the meal. Or maybe it was the egg nog? Thanksgiving is all about family. Eating, laughing, reminiscing, planning, crying with joy. Uncle Jim’s eyes sparkled at the head of the table. Proud that he could host this family gathering. And knowing that it would all happen again in just 30 days or so when Christmas rolled around. This is the Season of Memories! By the time most of you read this, we have elected a president. If you read this before Nov. 6, be sure to get out and vote! No matter who gets elected, we need a uniter-and-chief. Even if congress doesn’t play well with others, as they have shown in the past four years, we need a leader who will bring the ball to the game and lay out the rules. Compassion and courage. A leader with convictions, not blinded by ideology, but guided by temperance and vision. We need a pathfinder to bring us out of the wilderness where we now wander. Whoever is our next president, I hope he has the compass for the job. J.B. Lester; Publisher

St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste management District

T

he St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management District has been working to expand recycling in the St. Louis region since 1993. The District is a regional public agency that serves St. Louis City, St. Louis County, Jefferson and St. Charles counties. Almost two million people reside within the District, making ours the largest of the twenty Solid Waste Management Districts in Missouri. These Districts assist local governments, private businesses, and non-profit organizations in establishing and expanding waste reduction, recycling, composting, education, and household hazardous waste programs. Each of these programs plays an important role in properly managing the waste generated by homes and businesses on a daily basis. The growth in recycling has been tremendous since Missouri's recycling law was passed in 1990,

St. Louis Cardinals & Busch Stadium Recycling

T

when less than 5% of all waste was being diverted from disposal. According to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, more than 45% is now being diverted from disposal. That is a huge increase in a very short time, and recycling is poised to continue this growth in the coming years. Missouri has developed a vigorous recycling industry that expands our economy, protects our environment, and strengthens our communities. The District has assisted in this effort in several ways. In addition to technical assistance and educational resources that have helped the industry grow, the main tool has been the waste reduction and recycling grant program. Since inception, the District has provided more than 700 grants totaling in excess of $30 million dollars to help all aspects of the recycling industry. This may seem like a lot of money, but it translates to just about $1 per person per year. This assistance has helped catalyze the growth of the indus-

try by fostering collaboration and cooperation to form true public-private partnerships, which leverage tremendous amounts of additional investment. The District appreciates the thousands of dedicated people who have committed their professional and volunteer efforts to develop an industry that will serve our state for years to come. With their tireless work, the St. Louis region has accomplished significant waste reduction. The District is honored to work along side these dedicated individuals. They are the true heroes in this transformation, and the region owes them a debt of thanks. As the District works to confront the enormous environmental challenges facing our society, recycling continues to make strides to protect our environment, while growing our economy with jobs and taxes. The District thanks and congratulates all of our partners for a job well done, and let's keep up the good work!

This Is How We Change The World By Hope Gribble, Membership & Education Coordinator, USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter

A

Featuring keynote speaker Sarah Elizabeth Ippel, founder and executive director of the Academy of Global Citizenship

defining moment in K-12 education occurred in April 2012. The first Green Ribbon Schools were honored by the U.S. Department of Education. This voluntary program is the first comprehensive green schools program by the federal government. It is modeled after the Blue Ribbon Schools Program which recognizes outstanding academic achievement. The foundation of the Green Ribbon Schools Awards Program is built upon three pillars: • Reduced Environmental Impact and Costs, • Improved Health and Wellness, and • Effective Environmental and Sustainability Education. Honorees lead the way in natural resource conservation, student and staff health and performance, and environmental literacy geared to prepare students for 21st century citizenship and employment. This positively impacts the quality of students’ lives, the wellbeing of the planet, and responsible stewardship of funds - which in the case of public schools are taxpayer sourced. After all, reduced energy and water use connects directly with reduced operating costs. Pretty exciting, huh? So exciting that Glenn Cook, Editor in Chief of the American School Board Journal, stated, "The green schools movement is the biggest thing to happen to education since the introduction of technology to the classroom." Wow! I bet you’re longingly wondering the same thing I am. Why wasn’t this around when I went to school?! Luckily for our future generations, it’s here now! But with one caveat. As with Blue Ribbon Schools, schools do not apply to the U.S. Department of Education

SAVE MONEY. LOVE YOUR HOME. Save Money While Increasing the Comfort of Your Home

directly, but to state education departments. In order for a school to apply, the state the school resides within must opt to participate in the program. Where does Missouri stand? Missouri participated in the awards program in its inaugural year, resulting in the national recognition of two schools: The College School and Crossroads College Prep. However, for the 2012-2013 school year, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has chosen not to participate. This makes Missouri one of only ten states who have not committed to participate in the second year of this landmark program. If you feel strongly that Missouri should participate, please contact DESE to let them know. There’s still time. Still time for Missouri to opt in. Still time to give area schools the opportunity to shine. Speaking of shining, The College School, Crossroads College Prep, and the Academy for Global Citizenship, a Green Ribbon School located in south Chicago, will be doing just that on November 7th. Each of these schools will share a glimpse of their accomplishments at the U.S. Green Building Council – Missouri Gateway Chapter’s 5th Annual Green Schools Event, Green Ribbon Schools: Celebrating Three Award Recipients. Come celebrate with them! The event is free and open to the public. It will take place at The College School in Webster Groves from 8:30 – 11:30am.RSVP online at www.usgbc-mogateway.org/events. Learn about a plethora of green strategies: local and organic school lunches, renewable energy, recycling and composting, schoolyard chickens, butterfly monitoring, ecological research, green roofs, and MUCH MORE! As the Academy for Global Citizenship’s website states – front and center: This is how we change the world. Start changing.

Kuva Coffee Company Connects With Missouri Botanical Garden To Bring Direct Relationship Conservation Coffee To St. Louis

I

n 2008, Rainer Bussmann, Director of the William L. Brown Center & Curator for Economic Botany at the Missouri Botanical Garden and Tim Drescher, owner of St. Louis small batch artisan roaster, Kuva Coffee Company, connected to bring an extraordinary and rare direct relationship coffee to the St. Louis market. While on a trip for medicinal plants in northern Peru, Rainer Bussmann was introduced to a small village in the spectacular Huayabamba cloud forest in the Chilchos valley of Peru that produced the highest quality 100% pure Arabica Coffee. The Chilchos valley is an isolated region, accessible only by mule trail and a two day journey and is refuge for a large number of plant and animal species found nowhere else in the world. The inhabitants of this valley have tremendous respect for their beautiful and fragile natural ecosystem and have lived in harmony with the ecosystem for hundreds of years. Conservation coffee farmers of the Chichos valley have worked meticulously to develop the highest quality Arabica coffee bean without the use of chemicals or artificial fertilizers, thus protecting flora and fauna. Kuva Coffee Company and the William L. Brown Center at Missouri Botanical Garden, along with INBIA Peru, a Peruvian NGO, have collaborated to form the Chachapoya Biocommunity Network and set up the Huyabamba Conservation Corridor. Within this corridor, small producers grow high quality conservation coffee and cocoa. Tim Drescher pays a premium above world market rate for raw Peru Chilchos bean and gives 10% of his profits back to support these conservation efforts. Because small individual family farmers earn a rate above world market value, they are able to produce less which limits stress on the environ-

Picking coffee beans in the Chilchos valley of Peru. ment. The approach markedly improves the farmers' economic situation as it helps to preserve the regions flora and fauna. Cafe Peru Chilchos is an environmentally and economically sustainable coffee grown under shade, without artificial fertilizers or chemicals on small individual family farms, thus maintaining the cultural identity of farmers. Benefits are equally distributed to improve health, education and community relations while guaranteeing a responsible use of resources and conservation of the fragile and fascinating cloud forest environment. Join us in the enjoyment of this extraordinary coffee! Thank you for supporting Conservation Coffee and the community of Chilchos valley, Peru. Cafe Peru Chilchos is available at the following St. Louis locations - Missouri Botanical Garden Garden Gate Shop, Whole Foods Market Galleria, Whole Foods Market Town & Country, Local Harvest Grocery Morgan Ford, Local Harvest Grocery Kirkwood, Straubs Market Clayton, Straubs Market Webster Groves, Nutrition Stop - St. Peters, Tower Grove Farmer's Market, State Street Market - Alton, IL, Gustine Market & Parker's Table at Oakland & Yale. Find Ethical Chocolate, Coffee, Home Goods, Food & Gifts The 10th Annual Fair Trade Market Offers St. Louis Hundreds of Wholesome Fair Trade Items this November

O

n Saturday, November 17, Sunday, November 18 as well as Friday through Sunday, November 23, 24 and 25, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., more than 2,500 sq. ft. of space will be filled with fair trade items from all over the world at Manchester United Methodist Church. Market attendees enjoy cultural entertainment, chocolate and coffee tastings, movie showings, fair trade cake, a fashion show, food and more. Certified fair trade items from Plowsharing Crafts, Partners for Just Trade, Just Sweets and Roots-n-Streams will be available. Dedicated volunteers with a passion for social justice spend hundreds of hours throughout the year to make sure the market is successful. Buying fair trade products provides artisans, farmers, and producers a living wage for their work. It also

supports care for the environment, gender equality, child labor prohibition, safe working conditions and more. Today, approximately $4,000 of fair trade retail dollars provides one artisan or farmer's family a living wage for a year, through work, not charity. The Fair Trade

Market’s 2011 sales were $132,000 in just five days. As a result of those sales the equivalent of 33 artisans in developing countries can support their families with Fair Trade wages for their work for a year in dignity, without exploitation or harm to the environment. The choice to buy fair trade is easy, but choosing what to buy might be difficult. Come browse the Fair Trade Market’s huge selection of products including: chocolate, coffee, tea, clothing & accessories, home decor, toys, clothing, musical instruments, stationary, holiday decorations, soaps, and more. Find all of your holiday shopping items, including something for yourself, at the 10th Annual Fair Trade Market located at Manchester United Methodist Church, 129 Woods Mill Road, Manchester, Missouri 63011. Plowsharing Crafts Volunteer is Designer of New Earrings from Cambodian Artisans By Kathy Heinrichs Wiest

nexploded ordinance and the casings from military guns litter the Cambodian countryside, a legacy left by decades of war in Southeast Asia. Cambodian silversmiths are using gun shell casings to fashion jewelry, reshaping the raw materials of war to promote a new legacy of peace. The Cambodian peace dove jewelry made from the shell casings has been available for several years at St. Louis’s Plowsharing Crafts, a non-profit store that sells Fair Trade gift items from around the world. Now Plowsharing is announcing the arrival of a new item in the gun shell collection, and they have just the person to tell the story—store volunteer LynAnne Wiest, who also happens to be the earrings’ designer. Prior to coming to Plowsharing, Wiest served as a handicraft design and marketing advisor in Phnom Penh,

Cambodia, for Ten Thousand Villages, a major fair trade supplier to Plowsharing. In that role, Wiest worked with the Cambodian artisans to design earrings to coordinate with their “Resurrection Tree” pendant. “We talked about what is possible for them to make and how that should influence the designs we propose,” Wiest recalled. The silversmiths’ technique involves cutting open the shell casings and flattening them before tracing and cutting the shapes. The designs they considered included stamping the tree on a flat teardrop shape or a cut-out design. Ten Thousand Villages selected the more delicate cutout option and the Cambodian artisans went to work producing them. Nearly a year after Wiest presented the

designs, the earrings are now available for purchase to their North American retailers. “Trees in just about every culture are a symbol of life,” Wiest noted, “Creating a symbol of peace and life out of an object war reflects the attitude of the Cambodian people who have been through so much tragedy and yet are filled with so much hope for their future.” “Not only does the final design make a statement of peace, but the entire process, working in Fair Trade organizations, is an act of peace as we pay fair wages and treat all people involved with respect.” The Resurrection Tree earrings and pendant from Cambodia are among hundreds products—from jewelry and clothing to tabletop and home décor—available at the non-profit Plowsharing Crafts stores which can be found in The Loop at 6271 Delmar and in downtown Kirkwood at 137 W. 21-DAY DETOX/PURIFICATION PROGRAM Purify Your Body of Toxins for Better Health by Hugh St. Onge, Nutritional Services, Inc.

C

o-sponsored by eight health clinics in the St. Louis area, an August 2 evening lecture at the Doubletree Hotel, Chesterfield, attended by 75 people, outlined a 21-Day Detox/Purification Program. Although our bodies are designed to rid themselves of the harmful, external toxins to which we are continually exposed (including pollutants, pesticides, and other chemicals), our bodies can become overburdened. The 21-Day Detox/Purification Program helps the body purify and rebuild itself from inside out by stimulating the specific detoxification organs in the body—the liver, kidneys, and intestines. Research has shown that many of the chemicals we are exposed to can disrupt our immune, endocrine, nervous and reproductive systems. A recent study of the 21-Day Detox/Purification Program by the Metametrix Institute determined that this program can remove toxic chemicals from the body. Toxins can contribute to a wide range of conditions, including: Fatigue & Difficulty Sleeping Stuffy Head Digestion & Other Gastrointestinal Problems Food Cravings & Weight Gain Low Libido Reduced Mental Clarity The 21-Day Detox/Purification Program consists of eating fresh fruits & vegetables (twice as many vegetables than fruit), along with taking whole food supplements and a smoothie/shake from Standard Process, Inc., during the 21 days—with the option on

days 11-21 of adding up to 2 servings daily of light poultry, beef or fish. The benefits of this program may include: Improved Weight Management Results Increased Energy/Vitality Better Digestion Less Bloating Clearer Thinking Clearer Skin Shinier Hair Better Sleep In some cases, a person who begins the 21-day program may experience generalized aches, a throbbing sensation in the head, or fatigue—which are normal occurrences in the body’s purification process and will subside in a day or two. Those wishing to do the program are first screened by a health professional. Many people, upon completion of the program, are amazed at how good they feel, as well as by how much increased energy they are experiencing. They learn to transition to a new, healthful way of eating that continues the journey toward looking and feeling their best. Here’s what one woman (age 50+) had to say after recently completing the program: “…I’m happy to say that my blood pressure did improve, which was my primary goal, but as an added bonus I lost six pounds, had fewer headaches and noticed a clearer complexion…If I had to do it all over again, I would not hesitate. This was a very positive experience for me.” See the back page of this issue to see Before/After Results (lipid profiles, weight & body measurements) of recent participants in this program and to learn about the next lecture in January.

everal years ago a young woman came into my office. She was slim and appeared quite healthy, but she was plagued with digestive problems. A childhood “nervous stomach” turned into daily indigestion and bowel trouble as a young adult. She was literally afraid to eat. Why did she come see me? She wanted to be able to eat and feel good on her wedding day. It was my absolute pleasure to help her to achieve that goal. That is what I do. I specialize in the restoration and maintenance of health. Digestive health problems are some of my main specialties, but I see clients with all types of health challenges; immune issues, women’s health, weight-loss and more. The main nutritional tool I use in my practice is Enzyme Therapy. Enzymes are the body’s workers. When enzymes are deficient or out of balance, your foods, vitamins, herbs and supplements cannot nourish you the way nature intended. At The Healing Center each client is treated as the unique person we know them to be, there are no one-size-fits-all treatments. Clients experience a comprehensive health interview, hands-on examination, state-of-the-art computerized diagnostics, and laboratory testing when indicated. Teaching is another of my life’s pleasures. I enjoy being a health resource for our community, offering free classes on a variety of health topics every month. Visit our website for a list of events. Ready for a customized approach that will help you achieve optimal health naturally? I’m here for you.

Kind Soap Company

The Art Of Relating

KIND to your skin, KIND to the earth, KIND to others.

Relationship Coaching Counseling & Life Coaching Christine Kniffen, MSW, LCSW - Owner

T

here are certain times in everyone’s life when things just aren’t going as hoped. Maybe things seem terrible right now and you don’t think you will ever feel good again. Or, maybe things just aren’t where you would like them to be in your life. There are different avenues of change for different people. Some choose therapy to seek answers and relieve the pain. Others choose coaching to take action, move more quickly towards change and receive the needed motivation to do so. Despite how you may feel at this moment, you were put on this earth to live fully and enjoy life. If you are not doing so, then it is time to do something about it. It’s ultimately your choice to take charge of your life. Both coaching and therapy provide the means to do so. Make the investment……you deserve it. Christine Kniffen,MSW,LCSW is a Psychotherapist who received her master’s degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Christine works in private practice specializing in Relationship Coaching and couples counseling. She currently writes for The Healthy Planet magazine with articles pertaining to the many nuances and complexities of relationship dynamics, presents workshops on a variety of topics, is a paid lecturer and currently hosts The Art of Relating on Blogtalk Radio. IND soap company was born of a personal desire to use the very best, most luxurious, most natural bath and body products on myself and my family's sensitive skin. After searching most of my life for skin care and bath and body products that would not irritate my skin, I realized through trial and error that synthetic fragrance, sulfates, and many other "known skin irritants" were in the products that consistently made my skin mad. I decided that if I was going to jump in head first and start a company, I was going to do it right- from the very beginning. Not only would I create a better product, but I would do everything in my power to lessen the burden of waste on our environment. I would make sure that every product, process, and package was as recyclable, biodegradable, sustainable, eco-friendly, or "green" as possible. Besides pledging to always be honest and decent to my customers, I felt like it would be easy to build in a charitable donation to every product, and it was! we donate 10 cents from every product sold in addition to several other charitable endeavors. KIND soap company will always be three things... Kind to your skin, Kind to the earth, and Kind to others. By following these three principals, I have created a line of products that I am not only proud of, but also thoroughly enjoy using on myself and my family. I look forward to reaching even more people in the years to come, and to continue doing what I can to make the world a better place- one bar of soap at a time.

r. Varsha Rathod, MD is board certified in internal medicine and rheumatology and has been successfully enhancing traditional medicine with the benefits of holistic healing since 1995. She is an expert in the field of Functional Medicine. At Preventive Medicine, we get to know you by taking your history and using the latest diagnostic tools and labs. Our approach focuses on balancing key biological systems in your body to keep you healthy and feeling good. We believe that each one of us is made up of three components: body, mind and spirit. The Functional approach to healing addresses all three of these aspects to bring about your healing as opposed to the conventional way of thinking in which only certain bodily ailments or dysfunctions require the attention of a physician. If you are tired of being ill, if you would like to understand what made you ill and what you need to do to get better, or if you simply want to maintain your good health, then we believe that you can achieve all these goals at Preventive Medicine. Scream Cakes is a homemade, artisan ice cream boutique. We make everything from scratch, using organic dairy, sugar and eggs. Our cones, iscream cakes and cupcakes, iscream sandwiches and pies are glutenfree. We have vegan coconut milk iscreams and vegan sorbets, and we have a homemade doggy iscream that is yogurt based, sweet potato, peanut butter, and bacon flavor! These iscreams and sorbets are blended to let their fresh and bold flavors come through so they’re never too sweet, always just right. The cakes are layered and topped with creamy gourmet dark or white chocolate ganaches, giving every bite a lusciously distinct flavor and dreamy texture that will make you (and everyone you serve them to) scream for more. With these delicious and wholesome frozen delights we build "phantasmagorical" custom cakes, ranging from pretty flowers to sick and twisted zombies, from stylized and slightly personified animals to giant pieces of sushi. Cakes are decked out with dark and white chocolate ganaches and detailed with homemade candy clay. Besides playing with my food, I also draw on people. I have been tattooing for 18 years. I have also been a professional cyclist, an art teacher, and I played roller derby for a couple years.

Rethink Renovations

Optimal Health is More Than Lack Of Sickness

Sarah Wood-Owner

ocated directly across from the Kirkwood Train Station, sidewalk shoppers stop in daily to visit Sarah Wood, Rosemary Grove’s Founder & CEO. In 2010, Sarah read the book Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristoff and it turned her world upside down. She could no longer sit back and be witness to the injustice facing women and girls in marginalized countries. Sarah says, “Since opening April 2011, we have grown from a small fair trade gift store into a large business opportunity for those who want to get involved with the fair trade movement.” In addition to the Kirkwood storefront, RG also partners with Advocates – local charities, Ambassadors – private shopping party hosts and most recently, Independent Reps who share RG’s beautiful, handmade fair trade gift items through home parties and craft bazaars. The RG business model reaches globally by giving marginalized artisans a way to earn a respectable living. With the addition of the Advocate Program, RG is giving back locally as well. “We call it the Circle of Success” Sarah explains, “The more success the RG Sales Reps experience the more success the Fair Trade artisans experience and the more success the RG Advocates experience.” Recently, Rosemary Grove became a member of the Fair Trade Federation and a pending member of the Direct Selling Association. With these two organizations on their side, Rosemary Grove is poised to offer a flexible, business opportunity to anyone who wants to earn money while making a difference in the world.

ven as a child, Michelle “Mike” Ochonicky wanted to be an artist. Stone Hollow Studio began in 1979 when Ochonicky decided to pursue her love of art in a serious way. Although she works in drawing and photography, it is her award-winning scrimshaw that sets her apart as a rather unique artist. For 33 years, Ochonicky has specialized in the American folk art, using recycled antique ivory piano keys to create framed works of art and even bookmarks. Definitely a “green” art! Her scrimshaw has been chosen by museum curators from around the U.S. for Early American Life magazine’s prestigious Directory of Traditional Crafts for the sixteenth time this year. In both 2010 and 2011, Ochonicky was selected to design Missouri’s ornaments for the National Christmas Tree ceremony in Washington, D.C. Her work has been exhibited in the White House Visitor Center, Missouri’s Capitol Rotunda, Missouri Governor’s Mansion, St. Louis Cathedral Basilica and as far away as the Dedalo Museum of Contemporary Art in Italy. Medical Thermography Of Metro St. Louis Take Charge of Your Health Linda Spradling - Owner, CCT, Level II Certified Thermographer

inda Spradling first brought Meditherm medical thermography to the St. Louis area in 2009. It was her own personal journey into the world of preventive health that prompted her desire to bring preventive health information to others. She sees thermography as a tool to add to your toolbox if you want to “stay healthy” or “get healthy”. Most doctors now agree that disease and pathology start with inflammation. Medical thermography “sees” the inflammation in our bodies. We can monitor over time to see where the areas of concern are, to see if various protocols or treatments are being effective and to know when we need to reach out for help. Maintaining good breast health is the most popular use of medical thermography. In addition it often is the first indication of concern for thyroid, carotid artery and heart disease. Each year more doctors are understanding and recommending the addition of thermography as a health screening tool. Kelly Brengle, CCT, and Linda travel in a 200 mile radious of St. Louis, partnering with health clinics and practitioners. No prescription is necessary. Insurance is not accepted. The Meditherm team, who interprets their scans, supports them through continued education and are available to answer questions at all times. Empowering others to take charge of their health and to improve their quality of life is the greatest reward.

Are You Eating Your Allergies? by Jamila Owens-Todd, ND

H

ave you started on a holistic plan and your symptoms started to slowly return? Consider a food allergy. We are aware of the common food allergens such as dairy foods, red meat, corn, soy or sugar. There is a possibility that you can be allergic to broccoli, lentils or peaches. The IgG and IgE testing can show how your immune system is responding to food. These tests are great healing tools, yet they can become pricey when paying outof-pocket. There are also more basic methods of determining food sensitivities. One great method is called the Elimination Diet and it is a plan to isolate specific food groups. The Elimination Diet takes time, patience and discipline, but it offers great results. The beauty of following this diet, as opposed to going straight to allergy testing, is that you heal the digestive system while finding your sensitivities. As you are eating on the basic meal plan, you are eating a very low inflammatory and low allergen diet. This would be healing for anyone. Getting Started… INITIAL PHASE - You follow a brown rice diet for 7 days. EAT: cooked brown rice and brown rice pasta, any bean/legume, any vegetable, any fruit and any seasoning. Also, all nuts and seeds and nut/seed butters are safe to eat now too. Olive oil, coconut oil and vinegar. IF NOT LISTED, DO NOT EAT. CHALLENGE PHASE – slowly introduce highly allergic foods After 7 days of the brown rice diet, on day 8 introduce meat for lunch and dinner, for the next 3 days. - IF there are no symptoms, then stop eating meat on the third day and return back to the brown rice diet for 5 days. Watch for any reactions. -IF symptoms start on the first day of adding meat, then stop the meat immediately and return back to the brown rice diet. This

would be your first known allergen food. Return back to the 7 day brown rice diet before introducing any new food. Always try a food for 3 days unless symptoms occur, then you would stop the food immediately. Symptoms include: gas, bloating, abdominal pain, headache, acne, itching, congestion The next food to add would be wheat/gluten – any product made with white or whole wheat flour. The third food to add in would be dairy and eggs. This includes, cow’s or goat’s milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, baked items using dairy and eggs. Sustainable & Eco-Friendly Resources For Green Lifestyles

Coalition report

by Kathleen Logan Smith Executive Director; Missouri Coalition For The Environment www.moeniron.org

Choose Your Future

W

elcome to November, my digest edition. Soon the pandering and political mudslinging will be over. Your job this month: Choose. Decisions are made by those who show up, so show up. In the elections, illuminate your choices about potential candidates by tracking who gives them money at http://www.opensecrets.org/. A democracy kept in the dark about election funders makes democracy sick and weak. Follow the money. Vote for the health of the planet and its people. You also have more pleasant choices to make this month. The Missouri Coalition for the Environment invites you to soothe your soul at earthworks: art for an endangered planet, a month long show and sale which opens at the Regional Arts Commission Gallery November 2nd. Sixty amazing regional artists have contributed their art for sale. You can purchase your favorite pieces in November or wait to enjoy the auction and party December 1st. In either case, proceeds benefit our work for clean water, ecological restoration, clean air, safe food and energy, and public health. You’ll be amused, amazed, and inspired by the works contributed for the show. The pieces range from whimsical to stunning and embrace many forms including sculpture, multimedia, photography, painting, and textiles. Contributing artists include Larry Frederick, creator of fabulous “Steampunk” lamps; Michael Bauermeister, the sculptor who took First Place in Wood in the St. Louis Art Fair this September; Todd Reigle, the widely collected sculptural artist; the eternally delightful Bugnitz clan; and the estate of esteemed colorist Bill Kohn. To view or purchase art or auction tickets online, go to www.moenviron.org or check us out on Twitter @Moearthworks and on Facebook at Earthworks Missouri. When you attend our public meeting on St. Louis radioactive waste sites, November 13th, you

can join us in advocating for removal of radioactive wastes from the Missouri River floodplain in St. Louis County. Details are being finalized at press time so visitwww.moenviron.org or call (314) 7270600 for more information. You can help the City of St. Louis make good choices by reviewing and commenting on the City’s Sustainability Plan at http://goo.gl/CxlPR. The plan is available for public comment through November 14th. You can comment online if you miss one of the public presentations. See the link for schedules. You have very little choice when it comes to what is in your food, unless you grow your own. The fight in California over labeling food ingredients that contain Genetically Modified Organisms is focused on Prop 37, the GMO labeling law. For a technology that has scarcely been tested for its effects on human gastrointestinal health, reproductive health, and endocrine health, a label is not much to ask. Voters in California will make their choice November 6th. Missourians do not yet have that choice. When you make your menu choices for your Thanksgiving feast, consider the planet and its inhabitants. Support no-chemical agriculture if your budget allows it. Follow your conscience when it comes to the meat you eat. Check out the new documentary American Meat (http://www.americanmeatfilm.com/) for an overview of meat production in the U.S. today. Lastly, I am thankful for all of you who strive to be healthy and bring health to each other and to our planet. May you enjoy the season’s abundance.

Thyroid Disorders and Brain Function by Dr. Adam Hughes

I

t’s often overlooked, but brain function is extremely important in supporting the thyroid. The brain controls every bodily function. Your pituitary gland drives the thyroid gland. It releases TSH. The part of your brain called the hypothalamus drives the pituitary. Our brain needs two things to survive: fuel and activation. Fuel comes in the form of glucose and oxygen. As you age, your ability to utilize oxygen decreases by one percent per year each year after the age of 25. If you are 50 years old, you’ve lost 25 percent of your ability to utilize oxygen in your body. This is called oxidative phosphorylation, which is a big fancy three-dollar term meaning you’re not using oxygen as well as you did when you were younger. This is why deep breathing exercises and mild cardio vascular exercise have such positive effects on our health…they are increasing the amount of oxygen in our bodies and brains. The neurotransmitter serotonin plays a major role in thyroid function. There’s a place in your brain called the hypothalamus and there’s something called the periventricular nucleus. I know these are big fancy three-dollar words, but it’s critical that you know this if you’re suffering with thyroid symptoms. Serotonin acts on the hypothalamic periventricular nucleus in the central nervous system, but if you are deficient in sero-

tonin, your body can develop a low level of thyroid-stimulating hormone or TSH. One of the bigger influences on serotonin is blood sugar. So if you’re hypoglycemic, insulin-resistant, or diabetic, it is vitally important that you maintain your blood sugar levels within an optimal range to prevent deficiencies in Serotonin. This is why it’s important to eat healthy. Don’t skip meals. Quit eating junk food! Every time you eat junk food you are literally eating away at your thyroid and you’re making your problem worse. By consuming a poor, junk-food-filled diet, you will increase your thyroid symptoms: feeling tired or sluggish; inability to lose weight; cold hands and feet or insomnia. You will gain weight easily. You’ll have difficult, infrequent bowel movements; you’re depressed, and have lack of motivation and morning headaches that wear off later on in the day. The outer third of your eyebrows are getting thin, your skin or scalp are dry, you have mental sluggishness, you’re nervous; you’re emotional and you have night sweats. Don’t forget that your Thyroid relies heavily on other organs and organ systems to function properly. Feed your brain with healthy levels of oxygen and good sources of glucose, and your Thyroid with thank you! Organic Food No More Nutritious Than Non-Organic by Dr. Joseph F. Unger, Jr. DC., F.I.C.S.

O At Atrium Health Services our mission is to provide targeted, individualized treatment programs and products proven to optimize our patients’ health and healing potential. With over 70 years of collective experience, our doctors are certified in Sacro Occipital Technic, an advanced healing system developed by Dr. Major Bertrand De Jarnette. With the goal of technical excellence as our guidepost, we have developed premier programs to help resolve even the most complicated health issues.

n 24 September 2012 the Reuters News Service published a report citing evidence that the amount of vitamins in plant or animal products produced organically and conventionally is not significantly different. The report is suggesting that organic foods are no more nutritious than their nonorganic counterparts. I find this not at all surprising, because it is true. Virtually all of the foods eaten today are the products of hybrid plants. The animals we consume are also fed with the same hybrids, which is a form of genetic modification. These plant variations are designed to improve the products’ appearance, to grow better on nutritionally deficient-soil and to produce more products per acre. Those of us who are old enough can recall when every two years or so a farmer's field was allowed to lie fallow for a season. This is nature’s way of rebuilding the nutrients lost from the growing of food crops. One of the qualities of hybrids is that they can grow on soil deficient in some of the nutrients required by non-hybrid plants. If a plant does not require a specific nutrient, it will not absorb it. This eliminates the need for fields lying fallow and allows for crops to grow on a few simple chemical fertilizers. More profit for all concerned. You may have noticed that it has been many years since you’ve eaten a good-tasting Missouri tomato. You may have heard the discussion a couple of weeks ago on National Public Radio’s Science Friday. A university researcher is attempting to figure out how to splice flavor genes back into the tomato hybrids to recapture some of the original taste they once had. They claim that the current hybrids are all designed to produce pretti-

er fruit and higher yields per acre, at the expense of taste. It doesn’t matter if the plant is grown organically or not. If it is a hybrid, the seed stock is specifically designed to require fewer nutrients. Our bodies, however, are designed for the nutrition content of the original seeds and plants. Virtually all of the food sources commonly available now are nutritionally deficient because of these farming practices. Also, it is virtually impossible to conclusively determine the ill effects of this nutritional deficit upon human health. However, I would be of the opinion that virtually everyone is somewhat nutritionally deficient. Supplementation, therefore, is absolutely essential for optimal health. The only truly complete nutritional supplement is Catalyn from Standard Process Inc. The background story of Catalyn is another subject and is available through Atrium Health Services as well as the Standard Process website. Also see www.westonaprice.org. While I believe the research report referenced above to be accurate, nutritional value is certainly not the only factor to be considered. For example, organic foods are decidedly less toxic. Skeptics are encouraged to read Detoxify or Die by Sherry A. Rogers, MD. I personally would recommend different techniques of detoxification than those she presents, but her book is quite compelling. Information concerning detoxification programs is also available through Atrium Health Services at 314 872-9955. For more information, contact Dr. Joseph Unger, Jr. at Atrium Health Services, 314-8729955.

Disappearance of the Universe as We Know It for WIMPs:

What if Cancer Patient doesn’t really Have Cancer? By Simon Yu, MD

I

n case you are not familiar with the history of our Universe, NASA’s Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) Spacecraft expedition in 2003 revealed vital information about our universe. The age of the universe is estimated at 13.7 billion years old. The universe is made-up of: 4 percent matters consisting of stars, planets and gases, 23 percent exotic “dark matter” detectable by its gravity, and 73 percent “dark energy” detectable by an antigravity force. The size of the universe is unknown; it is expanding and really big. The size of the universe is perfectly flat – like a pizza. Roger Penrose, of Oxford University, in the December 2010 issue of the Economist, on Science and Technology, states that the Big Bang in which the visible universe began was not actually the beginning of everything that we know of as our Universe. It was merely the latest example of a series of such bangs that renew reality when it is getting tired out. More importantly, he thinks that the pre-Big Bang past has left an imprint on the present that can be detected and analyzed. The imprint in question is in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). CMB is the radiation that fills the whole Universe. CMB carries information about what the early universe was like. The CMB is almost but not quite uniform and known irregularities in it are the seeds from the galaxies from which stars and planets grew. If Dr. Penrose is correct, there was no Big Bang and much of what people thought they knew about the Universe is false. With the best scientific instruments of detection, we can only measure 4 percent of the universe. Ninety-six percent of the universe is considered to be made of “dark matter and dark energy” which means we don’t know what it is, but it is out there. Five thousand feet below the Black Hills of South Dakota, at the closed-down gold mine town called Lead,

a team of scientists and former miners are racing to solve one of the biggest mysteries of physics, Dark Matter, by using the Large Underground Xenon dark-matter detector (LUX). Most physicists agree that Dark Matter exists and is made of WIMPs. WIMP stands for “weakly interacting massive particle.” “Massive” does not mean large, but that they have mass and therefore both respond to and cause gravitational pull. “Weakly interacting” means that the particles, despite having mass, nonetheless only rarely interact with matter. WIMPs are electromagnetically neutral which is why we can’t see them. When astronomers find evidence of dark matter, it appears in the universe unevenly distributed. Gravitationally, it behaves like regular matter and it clumps together in a spherical cloud encompassing most galaxies. (From Popular Science, January 2011) Why am I bringing up these controversial topics in physics? The Big Bang theory in physics is just a theory with a belief system. Maybe, it will change to a “Little Bang Bang” theory with many string theories attached to it. With the best medical scientific instruments, we can only measure a small fraction of the human being in the forms of blood chemistry, X-ray, CT scan, MRI, or PET scan. How and why do some of my fibromyalgia patients respond after correcting their dental cavitations (jaw bone infections)? Why do some Irritable Bowel Syndrome patients respond to anti-parasite medications? Who do chronic fatigue patients respond to combinations of dental work, parasite eradications, and nutritional therapy? Some of my patients with advanced metastatic cancer documented by tissue biopsy, X-ray and PET scan, with massive tumors, respond to intensive detoxification, nutritional therapies, dental work, and parasite medications. Disappearance of the tumor occurs without targeting to destroy the cancer cells. Is this what we call Spontaneous Healing or an Accidental Cure? My book, Accidental Cure addressed these phenomena by explaining the acupuncture meridians and bio-cybernetics. What are we missing? New medicine based on a new understanding of biology is here to challenge the basis of Western medicine which has been dominated by a Newtonian mechanistic view of causes and effects. What happens to the 96 percent of the Universe as Dark matter and Dark Energy that we cannot measure with our best scientific instruments? Are they really WIMPs? What if the cancer patient with a massive tumor did not have cancer? Maybe, 96 percent of the tumor mass is not cancer cells but something else like WIMPs, Dark Matter and Dark Energy? Disappearance of the cancer by treating the whole body seems like a disappearance of the Universe as we know it. I believe the above is very relevant to all chronic diseases. Whatever your diagnosis, switch the word “cancer” with your current diagnosis. It can be fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, heart disease, Lyme disease, Autism, and many more. What if the “x” patient with “y” symptoms did not have a diagnosis of “z”? Disappearance of “z” by treating the whole body seems like a disappearance of the Universe as we know it. is the season to head to beautiful Missouri countryside and enjoy the fall colors displayed all around! Take a deep breath. Smell the crispness…. and the mold…… and the ragweed. No worries. Here are three very effective tips to help you through the season. #1) Prevent the allergy reaction. Yes it is true. Even if you have a long history of allergies, homeopathy can still work great for you. Try taking a homeopathic remedy for the allergen. There is a general anti-allergy relief that I recommend called “BHI Allergy”. You may also like a more specific remedy. If you know you are reactive to mold, take the remedy specific for mold. Homeopathy is clinically effective for decreasing your body’s reaction to the allergen. #2) Clean your sinuses. Most of these allergens are breathed in through the nose. The irritating allergen stays in the lining of your sinus tissue continuing to aggravate your body long after you have retreated indoors. I recommend either a Netti Pot or a Neil med. Both devices help flush water through your sinuses washing away the allergens. Cleanse in the morning and evening during allergy season. You will love how effective this is. #3) Use good herbal relief. Herbs are God’s medicines. Stinging Nettles Leaf has long been used for allergy relief. It is an anti-histamine to the body. For those of you that take over the counter allergy relief, this is a great alternative. Medications tend to dry most people out and cause mental sluggishness. I recommend D-Hist which is a physician grade natural supplement. D-Hist also has Quercetin, N-Acetyl-Cystein and Bromelain all great inflammatory relief. In addition, any of these herbs are useful in managing food allergies and decreasing histamine response in general. This is not one of those times that I say choose one of the above. On the contrary, do all 3 and you will have a healthy fall season. Dr. Alethea Eller specializes has a natural healthcare practice in Chesterfield MO. ell, you don’t look sick.” As I diligently pantomimed how the air conditioning blowing toward me felt like razors on my skin, I tensed up my neck to look like a tree trunk, rolled my eyes back, clenched my teeth and made that ‘screeching fingernails on a chalk board’ facial expression. Laughing, my entire family bellowed, “Okay, okay… Now you look sick!” As funny as I looked, I didn’t think it was funny that I was lethargic, felt like my brain was in a cloud and my hair was as thin as a pencil. If I didn’t look sick, what was I supposed to do when it seems like there is nothing tangibly wrong? Frustrated, I scheduled an appointment with my doctor. I tried to explain how everything around me was falling apart and I had no idea what’s wrong. She referred me to a psychologist and ordered lab work to quiet my pleas. As it turns out, I was experiencing symptoms of auto-immune thyroid disease. My doctor directed me to pop a pill every morning and promised this would all go away. So, for 10 years, that’s what I did. Although, for some reason that no specialist could explain, some days felt like a remake of the movie, Groundhog Day. I still fell asleep at my desk. My friends still laughed at me for refusing to eat or drink

anything chilled. I stayed upbeat, but underneath I was moody and exhausted and my pep talks turned in to “Really? We’re having this discussion again?!” I didn’t have time for this. How do I explain to my boss that I didn’t feel like coming in to work today because the 70-degree crisp autumn morning air on my skin puts me into such a hormonal rage that I want to punch something? Although on the outside I didn’t look sick, everything on the inside continued to fall apart. My magic pill wasn’t working. My tests seemed normal, but my symptoms remained the same. Something was still wrong and I wasn’t resting until I found help. After 10 years of leaving no stone unturned, I found Wellness Alternatives. They understood my confusing pleas. I learned how to alter my lifestyle through nutrition and other natural support, found the root of my concerns and no longer have to live on synthetic medication. Wellness Alternatives offered comprehensive testing and treatments tailored to my needs. They equipped me with tools to become independent. I was able to take control of my life. Everything finally made sense. Through a series of therapeutic interventions, I feel as healthy inside as I look from the outside. ast month our topic was Kaseeka, accessing the subconscious for the deepest and most stable healing physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. As we cross this threshold into the subconscious, many possibilities become available, including speaking with our younger and older self, and seeing and directing the path to full brain and body integration of our male and female energies. We have existed in a male dominated culture for the past 10,000 years. Men and women have been raised and programmed with very similar beliefs in how each should behave and process our particular place in the world. Granted, we are different. Each of us has amazing strengths and weaknesses. We complement each other and work from our innate gifts to support our selves, families and communities in the best way possible. Becoming more aware, intentionally striving to see what makes us tick, and seeing our unknown blockages, perceptions and misperceptions is tremendously liberating and healing. Regardless of the events or traumas we’ve experienced, coming to terms with our life and having the opportunity to view this with new eyes, understanding, and clarity, is life-changing. So, this is the construct in which we begin to explore a very basic part of ourselves – our male and female energies. People are usually surprised with their discoveries and how easily we can begin to change our working selves; like cleaning up our computer programs that are no longer serving us, if they ever did. In the columns below, I have assigned a list of characteristics that could be called male and female energies. Integrating both energies are essential to living a full, rich and balanced life. PULSED MAGNETIC CELLULAR EXERCISE With the MG-PRO We want to welcome you to the world of PEMF: Pulsed Electromagnetic Field. PEMF is widely used in Europe and other parts of Russia and Asia, where it has been a standard therapy. While this is a new technology in North America, it is really an innovative, emerging technology with extensive research and useage behind it. The MG-PRO is a generator that produces a DC (direct current) pulsed electromagnetic field of varying strengths delivered via insulated cables. No current of any kind comes into contact with the body. The magnetic field energy produced at the cable passes freely through living tissue for the purpose of cellular exercise to promote and support a sense of well being.

Studies of PEMF include astounding results with: Anxiety Disorders Athletic Performance AutoImmune Back Pain Bone/Osteo Burns Cancer Depression Epilepsy

What you put into your body is reflected on the outside, through your skin, which is your body’s largest organ. Fruits & Vegetables We all know that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is beneficial in a number of ways, including helping to prevent chronic diseases and stave off weight gain. Many of those benefits are due to the fact that fruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants. Antioxidants fight off free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can be harmful to skin cells, causing premature signs of aging. Adding a wide variety of colorful fruits and veggies to your diet should be a regular part of your beauty regimen. Foods High in Omega-3 Fatty Acids Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids can work wonders for a tired complexion. To achieve naturally radiant skin, up your intake of foods that contain omega-3 fats. Fatty fish, such as albacore tuna, mackerel, salmon, halibut, herring, lake trout, and sardines are all high in omega-3s. If you’re not a fan of fish, try incorporating walnuts, ground flax seeds, fortified eggs, or canola oil into your diet. Foods Loaded with Beta-Carotene Beta-carotene is an antioxidant (it’s a precursor to vitamin A) found in orange and yellow pigmented fruits and vegetables, as well as some green leafy vegetables. New research reveals that people perceive the skin of those who eat more fruits and vegetables high in betacarotene as more attractive than those who had tan skin from the sun. Produce high in beta-carotene includes carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, winter squash, dark green vegetables, apricots, cantaloupe, mango, nectarines, peaches, asparagus, cherries, prunes, and plums. Eat these fruits and vegetables with some hearthealthy fats to help absorb the beta-carotene. Water Drinking adequate amounts of water can help ensure your skin stays hydrated all day long. If you fall short on H2O, your skin will end up looking dry, tight, and flaky. Dehydrated skin is less resilient, making it more susceptible to wrinkling. If drinking enough water seems to be difficult for you, try carrying around a water bottle with you everywhere you go. You can take sips throughout the day, rather than waiting until you’re already dehydrated to search for water. Should I Take Supplements? It’s always better to get the nutrients you’ll need for healthy, glowing skin from food rather than taking individual supplements. Of course, even if you’re eating all of those supple-skin foods, you cannot forget to wear sunscreen. Be sure to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least a 30 SPF every day to prevent damage from both UVA and UVB rays. Challenging Work by Barbara O’Brien, Ph.D. Developmental Psychologist

P

arents often think about what they want for their child, what they want their child to become, and what they can do to foster a happy and healthy child. When I think of what I want for my children it is based on how I want them to continue approaching their world with the same inquisitiveness as they did when they were infants. Consider how infants learn to crawl: they arrive at the challenge on their own, practice, fail, and succeed at their own pace. There are no inducements, grades, or bribes. Children are “wired” to seek out challenges - and to master those challenges within a supportive environment. A Montessori education beautifully supports this innate approach to learning. Both of my daughters attend Chesterfield Montessori School When they arrived, they were introduced to an environment that includes five areas of learning: Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics, and History/Geography. I knew my daughters would enjoy Practical life lessons such as table washing and flower arranging, but wondered how these lessons translated into academics. I was delighted to discover how engagement in these scientifically designed tasks implicitly teach concepts such as sequencing, concentration, coordination, attention span, and independence. And, these early tasks have given my daughters the foundation to work on more complex tasks such as mathematics, botany, geography, zoology, language, music and art. In addition to challenging work, children are also wired to focus and emphasize the process of learning, more than the end result. For example, I recall when my newly five-year-old worked diligently for several weeks on a Montessori material that teaches how to tie a bow. One day, as she was putting on her shoes, I offered to help tie her laces. She replied, “No thanks mom, I can do it.” And without fanfare (or frustration), she elegantly tied her sneakers! I marveled at her persistence, patience, and grace as she worked on this. She mastered a task that was important to her, and did so at her own pace. It is through the patient, peaceful and calm Montessori approach to learning that children adhere to their own pace and foster her own sense of process. As they master each task, they build a sense of quiet

confidence, which propels them forward as they seek out the net challenging task. I am grateful to Chesterfield Montessori School for encouraging my daughters’ efforts and supporting their learning. To learn more about Chesterfield Montessori School, please contact them at 314-469-7150 or visit www.chesterfieldmontessori.org.

Pet Loss and Human Emotion, A Circle of Compassion by Suzanne Gassner

“I

t’s Rosie,” the elderly gentleman said softly. “I think it’s time.” Rosie’s back legs were limp. She was overweight, probably the result of good intentions taken to excess. Her eyes were a milky blue-gray, clouded by cataracts. And as we sat together he told me a kind of love story, of the joy a once-frisky dog had brought into his life. “I’ve been saying goodbye all morning,” he whispered, trying hard to hold back his emotions. After a while, he softly said, “OK, it’s time.” “Do you want to be with Rosie?” I asked. “Yes, of course. I could never let her be alone at this time. I want to hold her,” he answered. Thank you, I quietly thought. This was the one last favor he could bestow upon his beloved pet. He clutched Rosie close to him and buried his face in her neck, whispering softly in her fur. Her tail began bobbing and she tilted her face toward him. The old man stroked her fur. He pulled a large red bandana from the back pocket of his

Pet loss and human emotion---we see it every day at the Humane Society of Missouri. Sunrises: the excitement as a new pet is adopted and happily prances off into a new life. Sunsets: the good-byes, the tears, the final embraces. The death of a pet can cause enormous feelings of sorrow, guilt and loneliness for children and adults alike, whether the end comes through old age, illness, sudden accident or thoughtful euthanasia. Pets are our companions, friends, confidantes, playmates—ever faithful, welcoming, patient and unconditionally affectionate. When a pet dies, we expect that others will understand the depth of our loss, even if they do not share our distress. Yet pet owners are often inhibited in their very real grief, even when the pet was a cherished member of the family. Our grief may be compounded by a lack of apparent understanding from others, making the healing process more difficult. Seeking validation of your pain from people who will understand your loss is one way to begin healing. The Humane Society of Missouri offers a free pet loss support group. The group meets on the first Saturday of each month at 1:00 pm at the Humane Society of Missouri, 1201 Macklind Avenue. To participate, please call 314-650-9725. As you grieve, remember that your life was enhanced by the joy and companionship you shared with your pet during your time together. Certainly your pet’s life was equally blessed by sharing it with you. Suzanne Gassner is Director of Education for the Humane Society of Missouri. Plan For A Pet-Safe Thanksgiving Holiday! by Dr. Doug Pernikoff, DVM

hanksgiving is that wonderful time of year, our woodlands adorned with fall flora, cool weather changes, and the portal for Christmas and New Year's seasons following close behind. What's to Worry?!?!? All that great food! Bad for our waistlines, and maybe, worse for our beloved pets!! So many goodies! The general rule is to go ahead and 'stuff the turkey, not your pets'. Any unfamilar diet items can pose a problem. Excess gas, diarrhea, vomiting and worse! Those are the general signs to watch for. More severe signs like bloody stool, lethargy, and severe conditions like pancreatitis or stomach bloat can ensue. All these issues, aside from making our pets ill, costs lots of money at the emergency veterinary hospitals! Certainly, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And, don't forget to secure the trash cans and trash bags to assure that Fido or Felix do not find their way into all those tasty morsels. Items like turkey and chicken meat can carry organisms like Salmonella, as they sit out and denature. The turkey bones are hollow and splinter easily. Foreign bodies lodged anywhere along the intestinal tract, from mouth to tush, can impose major concerns, leading to surgeries that again, are costly, and can prove life threatening to our babies. Bloat is an animal in it's own right. This syndrome is much more prevalent in mid to large and giant breeds. Excessive water drinking or unusual food items producing gas, both distend the stomach. If it becomes too enlarged, like a water balloon, it tends to turn on its axis, and subsequently, twist off it's own blood supply. There is another issue. The spleen lies along the side of the stomach, and where the stomach goes, so goes the spleen. When the blood supply is twisted off to either, or to both organs, there is immediate tissue death and toxins released that can affect the heart, and worse. These animals tend to get very sick and even can die within hours. If you note your dog's stomach is swelling; if they stand uncomfortably as though in a trance, or if they try to vomit repeatedly, better get to your vet ASAP. Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas

organ, which produces both hormones like insulin and glucagon, for sugar metabolism; but, also has cells that produce the enzymes for digestion in our upper small intestines. Fatty foods and other unfamiliar food items can stimulate an overproduction of those enzymes that leak out and actually irritate the very tissues that produce them. Pets can get very ill, very quickly. Again, vomiting and excessive soft, voluminous stools are not uncommon. Fever, lethargy are also very frequent reports. Most times, your vet will need to hospitalize your pet and treat with fluids, antibiotics and other intestinal protectants. This syndrome tends to be more chronic and can recur with ever so slight a change in palate. This is why most vets will ask owners to minimize the treats provided and keep foods as consistent as need possible. If you decide you wish to change a diet item, please do it with caution, and slowly, over 10-14 days. As a general rule, avoid items like onions, grapes, raisins and other components of our Thanksgiving entree and desserts. Be safe and avoid issues by avoiding feeding practice changes around the holidays! Have a wonderful, family packed event this year. Love to all your pets and to you as well! Education & Enrichment Plan a meditation Class for Yourself or group by Shirley Stoll

M

editation is an effective way to find inner peace by connecting with the unchanging silence within you. Practicing meditation allows you to weave silence and stillness into your mind and body. One of the most common myths about meditation is a belief that you must force your mind to be quiet when you meditate. Meditation is not about forcing your mind to be quiet. Meditation is finding the quiet that is already there. Meditation may not change what is happening in your life. Meditation can change how you perceive and respond to these events which will bring reduced

stress, better health and more self-fulfillment . People who meditate on a daily basis are usually healthier. Doctors are increasingly citing stress as a major contributing factor to most illness. Research has shown meditation to be beneficial for a wide range of health problems. As stress is greatly eliminated through meditation, our minds and bodies experience greater health and vitality. Shirley Stoll is certified by Dr. Deepak Chopra, M.D. to teach Primordial Sound Meditation. The next class will be held Nov. 3&4 at the Midwest Mind Body Center in Creve Coeur. Dr. Deepak Chopra, best selling author and leader in the holistic health field, has revived Primordial Sound Meditation. This ancient form of meditation uses mantras, or Primordial Sounds, which are selected for each individual. This simple mantra technique, which is practiced twice daily, allows our awareness to go beyond the activity of our mind to the stillness of our spirit. This process allows our bodies to gain the deep rest necessary to release stress and fatigue. The result can be improved health, more satisfying relationships, increased creativity, and renewed enthusiasm for life. Primordial Sound Meditation can be learned by people of any age, culture, and educational background. It is recommended for anyone who wishes to enjoy greater peace, freedom and fulfillment. about the instructor, Shirley Stoll, B.S., M.A. - Shirley has been involved with meditation since 1995 and is certified by Dr. Deepak Chopra as a Primordial Sound Meditation Instructor and affiliated with the Chopra Center in Carlsbad, California. As a former teacher, she combines her love for teaching with her commitment to meditation.

rish music need not be limited to St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. Celtic Thunder is aptly named as an Irish vocal group that has taken the world by storm. They rumble into St. Louis for a one-night performance on November 8 at The Fabulous Fox Theatre. These six singers----or “lads,” as they refer to themselves—deliver a mix of classic Irish music, such as “Dulaman” and the love song “Maid of Culmore,” to solo performances, showcasing each member’s talents. This performance, entitled “Voyage,” depicts the journey of musical development that Neil Byrne, Emmet Cahill, George Donaldson, Keith Harkin, Colm Keegan and Ryan Kelly have each undertaken in the past four years,” said their publicist. One number , “Isle of Hope,” particularly recalls the voyage of the many immigrants to America who entered through Ellis Island. This is the first show by Celtic Thunber where all of the vocalists also play various instruments during the performance. In typical Celtic Thunder style, each singer is featured in solo pieces, as well as in blended performances of the entire group. The “lads,” well-known to PBS-television

ARTful Living St. Louis Area Fine Arts, Crafts & Performing Arts Michelle “Mike” Ochonicky, Arts Editor audiences, present a truly delightful familyfriendly performance. St. Louis is just a one-night show on the sweeping 63-city tour. Sample a preview of the group at www.celticthunder.ie. I first saw Pilobolus a few years ago, intrigued by their advertising image depicting the most flexible swarm of dancers I’d ever seen. The picture did little to prepare me for a performance that defied description. If “a picture is worth a thousand words,” I would need countless tomes to describe the performance I saw that night. Founded in 1971, Pilobolus has amazed millions in 64 countries around the globe. And they’re back at the Touhill on November 9-10, presented by Dance St. Louis—so I’m going back, too! Pilobolus has long been regarded as one of the most innovative contemporary dance companies in the world today, and of choreographers and dancer-athletes who performing mesmerizing moves thanks to incredible strength and physiques. In fact, the company actually teaches a class. It was my distinct pleasure to have an exclusive interview with Nile H. Russell, Co-Dance Captain and Dancer, now in his fourth season with Pilobolus. By his own admission, Nile is has both a strong work ethic, and loves being the life

Pilobolus of the party. “Pilobolus is very different from the dance community at large, “ Niles began. “ The

November, 2012 partnering is extraordinary and complex, the choreography is rigorous, and the touring schedule is full. So, compared to the companies I had worked with during my time in New York, Pilobolus is a very challenging company, but highly rewarding.” In response to my questions regarding the physical fitness level required to perform, Niles responded, “When we’re home, we rehearse 40 hours per week. On the road, we do anywhere from 90 to 130 performances a year. When I’m home, I love to go hiking, and I go jogging once in a blue moon. For the most part, I try to eat right and do more walking than driving. With my schedule, I barely have the energy for anything else, besides reading and Netflix!” Laughing about how many calories must be burned during rehearsals and performances, Niles said, “In terms of diet, I like fruit smoothies, greens here and there, and plenty of home baked goods. Luckily, dancing keeps everything else at bay.” Niles continued, “Pilobolus is a group of individuals creating, playing, growing, challenging, laughing, and discovering new ways to not just dance, but to also understand all the possibilities of the human form.” The New Yorker states, “Pilobolus shakes us out of admiration into awe.” The Washington Post says, “Pilobolus embodies a large part of what the best in contemporary dance is all about: discovery. Making something new with the same standard body parts the rest of us have.” The Healthy Planet gushes, “Just go see Pilobolus. You’ll never think of dance in the same way again!”

Groom David, son of dear Missouri by Jean Ponzi friends, is known out there as BL for his strong position (Bow Left) on the whitewater expeditions he expertly guides for a famous rafting enterprise. April, the Bride, is an equally Kinda hard to snap a shutter intrepid teacher any kid would love to learn from. My husband Dale’s and my gift of With the wild hairs whippin’ wedding photography gave us, in turn, a joyful role in events – which included some Even dreadlocks flippin’ guests of mythical proportions . . . Now all four Winds are rarely seen together, Although they are brothers from ancient stock. As posterity recalls the Anniversary of April When they go in a group, folks often call ‘em Blow-Hards and BL (David) in Salida town (And it’s not much fun to feel that mock) The picture we see is a bit off-center, Blown hard a-leeward, like the Bride’s lovely gown But the Winds heard the mighty Raft Masters gather, With Laura and Denise, loving Mamas of the couple, smiling They were drawn into an aura of community grace And (for dear life!) standing their ground. And they knew this Wedding Party could joyfully weather An Earth-Mother Cottonwood, heart of the party, Any gusts or gales they might toss around the place. With BL and his Groomsmen and his dapper Papa Dan. He puffed a Cubano and enjoyed a snort of Rye It takes a special Bride and Groom, true lovers of Nature, And comported himself like a proper gentleman. To welcome all the Winds on their nuptial day To forgive the whooshes and tilts in the photos Auster and Solanus, the East and South-er, And JOIN the lusty forces of Life at play! Joined the congregation and mingled with the folk They frolicked and breezed in the Cottonwood leaves, When BL and April page through their Wedding pictures And they hooted in their Coke bottles, howling at the joke. In every era of their life entwined They’ll see Boreas, Solanus, Auster and Zephyr And Zephyr, that whistling, free-wheeling West Wind Celebrating hard with everybody they could find. Prevailed upon the Bride to join her train. He flirted in the silks and tugged the ladies’ laces And surely these two will remember profoundly, And scattered uninvited clouds that might have threatened rain. Come-what-may and wherever they be, How all four Winds bestowed a full-blown BLESSING Now the wedding-party planners had counted on “sunny, On their heart-felt vows – tempestuously! Ask The

HERB LADY Cathy Burkemper

Q: Are you being fair to your supplements? A: Most people are accustomed to western medicine and expect immediate results. You have to remember, most drugs are like a bandaid to the problem. They usually just mask the symptom. What supplements and herbs do is work on the root or cause of the problem. With that said, there are a few rules you should remember. • It takes 5-7 times the normal amount of nutrition to rebuild and repair the body than it does to maintain. • You need to allow 3 months to help your body heal, then add one month for every year that you have been sick. • Then remember Herrings Law of Cure – “All cure starts from within out, from the head down, and in the reverse order in which the symptoms appeared”. It is very important that you stick to a schedule when taking your supplements. They do not work in the bottle. You must take them as directed by your health care professional. They should always be taken with a full glass of water and with food, if recommended. This is important for proper absorption and to keep you from getting indigestion or an upset stomach. Make sure you are taking your supplements at the right time of the day. Some give you

37

Are you being fAir to your supplements? energy, so you would not want to take them at night, because you will not get a good night’s sleep. Always store them in a cool, dry place because most supplements cannot tolerate heat. They will lose their potency. Also, some supplements need to be refrigerated, example: probiotics and fish oil. Everyone is different in how well you progress with a vitamin/herb regimen. There are many factors that can change your outcome; age, body weakness, pollution in your area, length of illness, diet, exercise, alcohol consumption, etc. If you are someone who has problems with absorption, try taking a digestive enzyme also. Just by following these simple rules, you will give your supplements a fair chance to work for you. And, of course, always remember to purchase high quality supplements. Our approach to holistic health includes the entire body and the oral cavity is no exception. We are dedicated to serving our patients and promoting a level of health care that carefully evaluates and reviews the use of dental materials, dental procedures and also offers dietary and nutritional support for each and every individual that is seen in our office.

Did you know that examining the mouth can reveal the presence of illnesses or unstable conditions in other areas of the body? If you feel like you’ve just about exhausted all your options in your search for better health, have your mouth examined with a different approach in mind. Get motivated, get educated, and get ready to participate in a

health-oriented lifestyle that will provide dental alternatives and a nutritional foundation designed to help support your own body’s healing powers.

The focus of holistic dentistry is to consider the mouth as a part of the whole body. We use materials and methods that are more compatible biologically with the body instead of the traditional dental materials. Examples of non-compatible materials are mercury fillings, non-precious heavy metal crowns, bridges and partials or dentures. Alternatives to fluoride are used

for the prevention of cavities. Proper alignment of the jaws and teeth are the foundation of how the body perceives itself in space. The result of improper alignment can result in symptoms of headache, ears ringing, loss of hearing, pain in the head and neck and clenching or grinding of the teeth. Good nutrition is inseparable for good

Relationships can bring great joy into our lives, and they can bring some of our deepest pain. Despite our best efforts, we end up in wars with those we love. We get hurt, angry and frustrated with those closest to us. How do we stop these wars? The Work of Byron Katie (also simply known as The Work) is a way to end the war with what is and begin to once again love those we love and stop battling with them. Can Technologies Threaten our Survival?

by Don Fitz Technology can turn from humanity’s salvation to its nightmare as toxins spew into the air and water, undermining biodiversity, exhausting natural resources and contributing to climate change. Water is vital to our survival. But the Earth’s supply of fresh water is being seriously compromised. In the first show of the series, Bob Criss, of Earth and Planetary at Washington University, describes how water is used by extractive industries such as the mining of coal, uranium, and lead. The question is: How much water contamination is due to bad corporate practices and how much is inherent in industrial production? Bob Criss is also featured in the second show on “fracking.” Once portrayed as the low-carbon fuel to a renewable energy future, the practice of deep drilling and hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to extract gas from shale rock has advantages but also a host of environmental concerns. In addition to water and air pollution, fracking can cause earthquakes. The third show is joined by Ben West, who explains dangers of electronic waste. Though there are some positive changes taking place in the industry, electronics is associated with mining for inputs such as coltan, the gluttonous use of water, and the mountains of toxins created. Air conditioning in St. Louis involves burning lots of coal. In the final show of the series, Gavin Perry of Show Me Solar and Patricia Schuba of Labadie Environmental Organization discuss the pollution, health effects and wasted resources of burning coal in addition to how we could keep cool in summer and use much less electricity. The November shows include portions of The Hidden Destruction of the Appalachian Mountains, Yellowcake, Unleaded, Fracking Hell, The Story of Electronics and a Stan Cox presentation. Green Time now airs on KNLC stations in four Missouri areas. It appears in St. Louis at noon on Saturdays and 5:30 pm on Wednesdays on Channel 24-1. It also appears at 8 pm on Mondays in St. Louis (Channel 24-2), Springfield (Channel 39), Joplin (Channel 36) and Marshfield (Channel 17). November Green Time programs air on Saturdays, Mondays & Wednesdays on these dates: · November 3, 5, & 7 “Water, energy and Mining;” · November 10, 12 & 14: “how Safe is Fracking?” · November 17, 19, & 21: “The Story of electronics” · November 24, 26 & 28: “Losing our Cool” Also see Green Time on greentime.tv and facebook.com/pages/Green-Time-TV/186014811491714 If you would like to help produce Green Time TV call 314-727-8554 or email fitzdon@aol.com.

WHAT CAN 21 DAYS DO FOR YOU?

CoͲsponsored by eight health clinics in the St. Louis area, an August 2 evening lecture at DoubleTree Hotel, Chesterfield, aƩended by 75 people, outlined a 21ͲDay Detox/PurificaƟon Program. From among the 22 individuals who chose to do the 21Ͳday program, 12 preͲselected themͲ selves to do Before/AŌer Lipid Profiles and to track Weight/Body Measurements changes. See their results below. Although our bodies are designed to rid themselves of the exterͲ nal toxins to which we are conƟnually exposed (including polluͲ tants, pesƟcides, and other chemicals), our bodies can become overburdened. The 21ͲDay Detox/PurificaƟon Program helps the body purify and rebuild itself from inside out by sƟmulaƟng the specific detoxificaƟon organs in the body—the liver, kidneys, and intesƟnes. This 21ͲDay program consists of eaƟng fresh fruits & vegetables (twice as many vegetables than fruit), along with taking whole food supplements and a smoothie/shake from Standard Process, Inc., during the 21 days—with the opƟon on days 11Ͳ21 of adding up to 2 servings daily of light poultry, beef or fish. For further informaƟon, see arƟcle enƟtled “21ͲDay DeͲ tox/PurificaƟon Program” in this issue. on page 13.
