Comes To Mind On Deadline
S
ometimes nothing prolific comes to mind on deadline. That is why we columnists do these quick hits of thought geared to tickle your fancies and perhaps raise the hair on your neck. • Leaves are falling, floating to the ground while squirrels scurry to hide their winter cache. It’s Autumn, summer has left the building and Jack Frost is knocking at the door. • Nothing is better than being with family on Thanksgiving. Good food & warm hearts. • October baseball in St. Louis. The Cardinals in the World Series. Wish I could afford a ticket. But my front row couch seat will do just fine. Go Cards! Pass the Queso. • Jackson, my 3-month-old grandson, smiled again today. And giggled. Oh, my, that warms the heart and brings a tear to grandpa. • Yet to see if Affordable Healthcare Act is actually affordable. Can’t get on the website. Big mistake by the AHA crew. Good fodder for the GOP. But their brand is already bottom shelved. Such a mess in Washington. Need to nominate Mr. Clean. Or is it Ms Clean? Some fun politics ahead. If that is your idea of fun.

• Had another great expo on Oct. 20. A special thanks to St. Louis Composting for sponsoring the event, Chipotle for offering gift cards, and Urban Chestnut for craft beer samples. There was great music by Terri Langerak and Carol Eder, too! Look for our next event in mid to late March. • Only three months until the Winter Olympics in Sochi Russia Feb. 7-23. While all eyes will be on downhill skiers Lindsey Vonn and Bode Miller, Niki and I prefer the more meditative winter sport of Curling. Sort of like chess on ice. Check it out! • My tomato plants have offered their last crop. The growing season is over. Good, maybe now the fleas will die. Our two dogs and four cats hope so, too! • Someone better figure out that people continue to text and drive, or don’t drive. How many times do you sit at a light, and the car in front of you doesn’t move when the light turns green? Time for another law because people can’t police themselves I guess. • I have come to the conclusion there is no Bigfoot, but there are definitely ghosts. And I am pretty sure their is an alien living under our deck. The dogs think it’s an opposum, but no animal on earth looks like that! • If you don’t recycle at home or the office, you should be ashamed. Yes, that means you Big Bill. It’s not a political issue, it’s an earth issue. • Cold nights, warm blankets, old movies, a wife and dogs who love you. I guess Autumn is not so bad. It’s tough for Leos to admit that. And then I smell blueberry muffins baking. Yummmmm. Tis the season for baked goods! Happy Autumn J.B. Lester

st. louis-Jefferson solid Waste management district
T
he St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management District has been working to expand recycling in the St. Louis region since 1993. The District is a regional public agency that serves St. Louis City, St. Louis County, Jefferson and St. Charles counties. Almost two million people reside within the District, making ours the largest of the twenty Solid Waste Management Districts in Missouri. These Districts assist local governments, private businesses, and non-profit organizations in establishing and expanding waste reduction, recycling, composting, education, and household hazardous waste programs. Each of these programs plays an important role in properly managing the waste generated by homes and businesses on a daily basis. The growth in recycling has been tremendous since Missouri's recycling law was passed in 1990,
Parkway school district’s Recycling & Waste Reduction Program
S
tudent involvement is once again rejuvenating the Parkway School District’s recycling program. It all started in 1990 when three elementary school students took the lead in getting the recycling initiative underway. Parkway's program has grown steadily over the years to address many of the conservation and recycling concerns of not only the school district, but the community as well. Most recently, three high school students; Abby Lammers, Julia Goldman and Jacqueline Sotraidis made a persuasive presentation to Dr. Keith Marty, Parkway’s Superintendent, highlighting the need for Parkway to not only continue, but to expand a pilot composting program. Their efforts paid off twofold. Impressed with their initiative, Dr. Marty supported the idea to expand the composting program, which focuses on school trays and food waste. The program’s success – much of this based on active student involvement – paved the way for the entire district to participate in the composting program. Each year, the composting program alone will divert 720 tons from the landfill; nearly doubling the District’s existing recycling efforts. The Missouri Recycling Association officially recognized it as the “Outstanding Small Organics Diversion Program” for 2013. In September, Dr. Marty, Abby Lammers, Julia Goldman, Parkway teacher Russ Barton, and Erik Lueders, Parkway’s Sustainability & Purchasing Manager, were on hand to accept the award in Jefferson City. Jacqueline Sotraidis, a recent graduate, was not in attendance. Currently, Parkway recovers some 750-800 tons of single-stream material every year through a partnership with Republic Services. Parkway’s single-stream recycle bins also serve as convenient drop-off sites for residents throughout the district’s 65 square mile footprint. Last year, when the District piloted the new compostable lunch trays, they utilized composting services provided by Blue Skies Recycling and St. Louis Composting. In addition to single-stream recycling and composting, Parkway recovers virtually all recyclable materials throughout the District. Examples include electronics, florescent lights and ballasts, wooden pallets, shrink wrap, and scrap metal, concrete, asphalt from their construction sites. Parkway’s recycling and recovery operation is in compliance with the appropriate local codes, as well as the Environmental Protection Association’s regulations. Parkway’s recycling and waste management
when less than 5% of all waste was being diverted from disposal. According to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, more than 45% is now being diverted from disposal. That is a huge increase in a very short time, and recycling is poised to continue this growth in the coming years. Missouri has developed a vigorous recycling industry that expands our economy, protects our environment, and strengthens our communities. The District has assisted in this effort in several ways. In addition to technical assistance and educational resources that have helped the industry grow, the main tool has been the waste reduction and recycling grant program. Since inception, the District has provided more than 900 grants totaling in excess of $38 million dollars to help all aspects of the recycling industry. This may seem like a lot of money, but it translates to just about $1 per person per year. This assistance has helped catalyze the growth of the indus-

program has received numerous awards and growing recognition regarding energy conservation, pollution prevention, environmental excellence and the overall operations of the recycling and waste management program. The Parkway School District, located in West St. Louis County, is a suburban public school district that includes approximately 20,000 students and staff, along with and 28 school buildings in 13 different municipalities. Funding for the Parkway School District’s recycling and waste management program is funded, in part, by the St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management District and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
try by fostering collaboration and cooperation to form true public-private partnerships, which leverage tremendous amounts of additional investment. The District appreciates the thousands of dedicated people who have committed their professional and volunteer efforts to develop an industry that will serve our state for years to come. With their tireless work, the St. Louis region has accomplished significant waste reduction. The District is honored to work alongside these dedicated individuals. They are the true heroes in this transformation, and the region owes them a debt of thanks. As the District works to confront the enormous environmental challenges facing our society, recycling continues to make strides to protect our environment, while growing our economy with jobs and taxes. The District thanks and congratulates all of our partners for a job well done, and let's keep up the good work!
ousehold hazardous wastes (HHW) are unwanted household products that contain ingredients that are flammable, toxic, reactive, and/or corrosive. After years of holding one-day collection events, there is now a regional household hazardous waste collection facility for St. Louis County, St. Louis City, and Jefferson County residents. The facility is located at 291 E. Hoffmeister, St. Louis, MO 63125 (Lemay area) and use is by reservation. Visit www.hhwstl.com to schedule a drop-off reservation for residential HHW only. Residents without internet access may call their jurisdiction for assistance in making a reservation: saint louis county: 314-615-8958 saint louis city: 314-622-4800 Jefferson county: 636-797-5043 items accePted: Paints, stains, varnishes, wood preservatives, pesticides, herbicides, poisons, fertilizers, solvents and strippers, aerosols, motor oil and filters, gas cylinders (BBQ- pit size or smaller), fluorescent tubes, batteries (rechargeable, car batteries), driveway sealant, items containing mercury (thermometers, thermostats, mercuric salts), gasoline. items nOt accePted: Explosives and ammunition, radioactive waste, smoke detectors, medical and infectious waste,
prescription drugs and medications, computers, televisions and other electronic devices, tires, bulky wastes (furniture, carpeting), trash. Fees • Latex paint is being accepted for recycling, but residents must pay a fee of 20 cents per pound (about $2.00 for a full gallon). Unlike other household chemical waste, latex paint is not actually hazardous. If completely dried out, latex paint can be safely disposed of in your trash. • For all other eligible HHW, there is a 50-pound limit. • If you have more than 50 pounds of HHW, you can still bring it in at the time of your appointment, but you will be charged our contracted fee to handle the additional material, which is $1.00 per pound for the extra HHW. The best way to manage HHW is to not create it in the first place! This starts at the point of purchase by choosing safer alternatives (i.e. avoiding products labeled warning, danger, corrosive, or poison). Buy only what you will use and if you have leftovers, share them with neighbors, family, or community organizations. Funding for the permanent program comes, in part, from the St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management District and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. Additional funding comes from voter-approved St. Louis County landfill surcharge fees.

Green Living Sustainable & Eco-Friendly Topics For Healthier Lives
coAlition report
by Kathleen Logan Smith Director of Environmental Policy Coalition For The Environment www.moeniron.org
Active or rAdioActive?
A
catchy tune by Imagine Dragons has become the unofficial anthem for many of the activists in north St. Louis County who learned earlier this year that they live in the shadow of radioactive uranium wastes now threatened by a subsurface landfill fire. The haunting lyrics of “Radioactive” begin: “I'm waking up to ash and dust/I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust/I'm breathing in the chemicals”. For people living within a five mile radius of the West Lake landfill near Earth City, the lyrics hit close to home. The landfill fire stench ruined many outdoor events this spring with the acrid odors burning throats and forcing people indoors where, sometimes, even walls were insufficient barriers. Asthmatics and people with respiratory illness experienced particular distress. People living nearest the landfill continue to report odors, despite efforts at the site to curb the source of the odors and to block the advance of the subsurface landfill fire. Since 1973, the West Lake Landfill, on St. Charles Rock Road west of I-270, has been the unfortunate home of dumped radioactive nuclear weapons waste that originated at Mallinckrodt Chemical Works during its work for the WWII/Cold War pursuit of nuclear bombs (1943-the late 1960’s). The subsurface landfill fire that now threatens the waste began in an adjacent landfill and was first reported in 2010. The landfill fire, or “subsurface smoldering event” has since spread throughout the southern area and is about 1,000 feet or less from the nuclear weapons waste. The fire moves from half a foot up to 3 feet per day. We are all concerned about the exposure to the community if the fire reaches the radioactive waste. Exposure to the same contaminants at other sites is linked to high rates of rare cancers and leukemia, birth defects, reproductive disorders, and autoimmune disease. No one from any of the government agencies has been able or willing to explain what would happen in the event of a worst-case scenario. Instead, they assure us, “It won’t happen”.
But it is happening. And plans to block the fire’s advance were stalled by the government shutdown. Tens of thousands of people live, work, and attend school in the area. A committed group of area residents has come together to protect their families and their investments in their property and community. You can connect with them at www.radwastelegacy.com or on the West Lake Landfill group Facebook page. Together we can insist on necessary precaution, planning, and long-term solutions. You couldn’t find a worse place than West Lake for the long-term storage of highly radioactive materials. The site is in a populated area, near a busy interstate (I70), in a floodplain of a river that is the drinking water source for St.Louis and St. Charles, in a seismic zone, in an area prone to tornado strikes, with no liner separating the radioactive wastes from the groundwater. Schools, churches, day care centers, hospitals and Earth City businesses are within two miles. Studies continue to pile upon studies and no data supports the idea that leaving the waste in place, where it sits in contact with groundwater, is a safe, long-term storage plan. The waste is a mixture of radionuclides including Uranium and Thorium and it will become more radioactive for thousands of years before it begins to stabilize and then, eventually, to decay. The Missouri Coalition for the Environment is supporting the community in pressing for the safe removal of the radioactive wastes found in the northern section of the property – which would require the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to revise its plans to leave the waste in place. As you plan ways to help make our planet healthier, consider what you can do to support our friends and neighbors in northwest St. Louis County. A worst case scenario means this is a regional problem. Public meetings are held monthly to share new information; research is continuous. Phone calls demanding Senator Claire McCaskill and Senator Roy Blunt support the removal of the radioactive wastes are always in order. Raise your voice, take a stand, learn more. Start here: www.moenviron.org. And you can help monitor the site by reporting odors you smell in the area (270-St. Charles Rock Road) to the Missouri Dept. of Natural Resources immediately. You can find links to report forms at http://www.stlradwastelegacy.com/links/odor-log/. If you choose the Missouri Coalition for the Environment’s odor log we will keep your identity private.

the Future of leed:
the Green Building Rating System Gets An Update Johanna Schweiss, Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator, USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter
A
s Americans, we spend an average of 90% of our time indoors, and the buildings where we work, live, and learn have a huge impact on our personal health, our community, and our environment. The built environment consumes 76% of our national electricity use, creates 65% of our nation’s waste, and is responsible for 39% of our greenhouse gas emissions. It was these negative impacts that prompted the founding of the U.S. Green Building Council, referred to as USGBC, in 1993. Their mission: to promote sustainability in the building and construction industries. In order to achieve that mission, USGBC developed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system, or LEED. The LEED rating system guides developers, designers, contractors, building operators, and building occupants through the sustainable design, construction, operation, and maintenance of their buildings, homes, and communities. As a third party rating system, the LEED rating system acts like the nutrition facts on your cereal box- it makes green building design and operation transparent, tangible, and measureable. Since it was introduced in 2000, LEED has challenged the status quo, transformed the marketplace, and certified more than 19,000 commercial projects. A 2011 study showed that LEED certified projects enjoy 25% lower energy use and have 19% lower operational costs compared to the national average. However, even though LEED buildings perform well; they still typically have a net negative
impact on the environment. They are, in short, “less bad,” than their non-LEED counterparts. And the goal of the U.S. Green Building Council is to do more than be “less bad”; their goal is for our built environment to have net positive impacts, to eventually get to a state where our built environment contributes “more good.” With this goal in mind, LEED rating systems are regularly revised. LEED version 4, a revision to the current version (LEED 2009), is debuting this month at the international Greenbuild conference. Yet again, it raises the bar- asking our building designers, builders, operators, and occupants to do more. The goals of LEED version 4 are to reduce our contributions to global climate change, to enhance individual health, to protect and restore our water resources, to protect and enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services, to promote sustainable and regenerative material cycles, to build a green economy and to enhance our communities’ quality of life. Meeting these goals will be a challenge. A challenge to the marketplace to go further, to make the next great leap toward better, cleaner, healthier buildings. While LEED version 4 pushes green design further than it has been before, it does not require all certified buildings to have net positive environment impacts. So one thing we can be sure of is that after LEED version 4 has become the norm, the U.S. Green Building Council and LEED will continue to push, continue to transform, and continue to strive to a point where our best will not be simply to be “less bad,” but will be more and more good. visit www.usgbc-mogateway.org.

ndependently owned, community bookstores are the backbone of the local literary community. In a world of e-books, glowing tablets and online ordering, the Book House has stood the test of time for more than 30 years offering an eclectic assortment of new, used, rare and out-ofprint books from a characterfilled Victorian house in Rock Hill. In an abrupt set of circumstances befitting the despair of Dickensian tale, this year has seen the Book House suddenly forced by the landlord and developer, out of their beloved historic cottage, sending owner Michelle Barron on a quest to find a new home for her book store and the more than 250,000 titles housed within its walls. “It breaks my heart to leave our wonderful building, but we have no choice. It has not been an easy transition but with the support of our loyal fans I believe we can grow and bring the soul and spirit with us to our new location in Maplewood and become bigger and better than ever,” says Michelle Barron, owner. The bittersweet move brought with it more than the challenge of carefully carting thousands of books down Manchster Road. Once settled in the new spot Barron was faced with the challenge of remodeling the space, which has sat vacant for near-
ly 18 years, unexpected construction costs proved to be a major drain on the Book House’s estimated budget. In order to open their doors to new neighbors and loyal customers in Maplewood, the Book House needs at least $25,000 for construction to meet building code. Without support from the community, this could be the last chapter for the Book House. How can YOU help? Barron is launching a fundraising campaign to reach out to local authors, readers and book lovers to help Build the Book House. Funds raised from the donations will go directly toward efforts to finish the next phase of construction. In an effort to engage local lovers of literature, the Book House is teaming up with their Maplewood neighbors, Schlafly Bottleworks, to host a fundraising event on November 15, at 8:00pm, featuring craft beer, local author readings and a silent auction. It promises to be a great evening of fun and adventure! If you are interested in purchasing books, tickets to the event or making a donation, please email info@bookhousestl, call 314-968-4491, or visit 7352 Manchester Rd St. Louis, MO, 63143.

Jackie Fokkens Hypnosis A New View, A New You Jackie Fokkens - Certified Hypnotherapist(CH)
I
have helped many people reach and surpass their personal and professional goals with hypnosis. Many times certain individuals come to see hypnosis as a "last resort" when tackling behavioral issues that are unmanageable. I am very conscious of this fact and you can be assured I will be extremely caring and personally invested in the process. I received my formal training and certification through the National Guild of Hypnotists. I have a private practice in Creve Coeur, MO. Dispelling myths is an important part of my "pre-talk" I conduct with every client. It is not "mind control" You can not get "stuck" in hypnosis. I will personally guide you through this process by simply making suggestions while under hypnosis. My clients tell me it is so soothing, they love the whole process because it is so easy. All they do is listen to the sound of my voice, concentrate, and their stress melts away. People who felt weight loss was futile before hypnosis, report that their eating patterns and attitudes towards food have drastically changed. I have helped many people kick start their lives by no longer obsessing over food and are able to lose 20, 30 lbs. and more. In addition to quitting smoking and weight loss, I also treat clients in these areas: Test Anxiety, Nail Biting, Sales Performance, Stress/Anxiety, Confidence, Self-Esteem, Sports Enhancement, Insomnia, Career, Relationships and Phobias. 11457 olde Cabin rd suite 345 Creve Coeur, Mo 63141

Teaching The Art Of Living And Dying Well
Mary Magill - Founder & Executive Director
rom Vision to fruition! Alternative Hospice was founded in 2005. Mary Magill has been a nurse since 1967 and has been blessed to have experienced everything from birth to death, in all kinds of settings. She is a visionary and a people gazer, and discovered our elders are often not receiving the nurture that they need to thrive. Mary’s thought was to integrate complementary care with conventional medicine so we can address the emotional, spiritual and psycho-social needs as well as the physical needs of the patient...Together we provide true holistic care. Mary is a patient advocate, educates and empowers the patient and family so they can make informed decisions, and a passionate believer that we are spiritual, emotional and physical beings. Our goals at end of life are comfort, quality of life, emotional and spiritual support, and a death with respect, love and dignity. Pain and symptom management and comfort are of high priority. Examples of Complementary care, i.e. aromatherapy, music, compassionate touch, guided imagery, to name a few. Medicare is the primary payer source for hospice care. It does not cover complementary care. We provide it at no cost to the patient and/or family, because it’s so nurturing, and we are blessed by donations to help keep the program running. Alternative Hospice has a great respect for our elders and veterans. They are why you and I are still in the land of the free and the home of the brave, and they deserve premier healthcare, with outstanding caregivers, in a peaceful setting…that peace that passes all understanding. 1749 Gilsinn Ln., Fenton, MO 63026

Kind Soap Company KIND to your skin, KIND to the earth, KIND to others. Jean Scholtes - Owner
IND soap company was born of a personal desire to use the very best, most luxurious, most natural bath and body products on myself and my family's sensitive skin. After searching most of my life for skin care and bath and body products that would not irritate my skin, I realized through trial and error that synthetic fragrance, sulfates, and many other "known skin irritants" were in the products that consistently made my skin mad. I decided that if I was going to jump in head first and start a company, I was going to do it right- from the very beginning. Not only would I create a better product, but I would do everything in my power to lessen the burden of waste on our environment. I would make sure that every product, process, and package was as recyclable, biodegradable, sustainable, eco-friendly, or "green" as possible. Besides pledging to always be honest and decent to my customers, I felt like it would be easy to build in a charitable donation to every product, and it was! - we donate 10 cents from every product sold in addition to several other charitable endeavors. KIND soap company will always be three things... Kind to your skin, Kind to the earth, and Kind to others. By following these three principals, I have created a line of products that I am not only proud of, but also thoroughly enjoy using on myself and my family. I look forward to reaching even more people in the years to come, and to continue doing what I can to make the world a better place- one bar of soap at a time.

The Refind Room Previously Owned, Unique, Inspired Decor Suzanne Woodard - Owner
i! My name is Suzanne Woodard and I opened The Refind Room in October 2012. The Refind Room concept combines so much of what I love and believe in. I always had a passion for interior design and decor and I believe that our surroundings influence our state of mind and well-being. Of course I thought it would be amazingly fun to find new, exciting products and bring them to St. Louis. Yet I also wanted to sell affordable items and had serious reservations about sourcing overseas. Bam! Light bulb moment. There are so many gorgeous previously owned items to be found locally. So I looked, and I found, many many stunning pieces that still have tons of life in them, that will make a home comfortable and beautiful, and are unique and inspiring. As a result, The Refind Room was born. The mission of the Refind Room is to collect quality vintage modern, midcentury, antique, and contemporary style furniture and home furnishings that have a style and personality, and then create well-designed rooms in the store for you so you can see how these pieces can be incorporated into your home. The Refind Room is also based on the values of affordability, local products, and making eco-conscious choices by recycling and re-using goods that are already in the stream of commerce. We hope you have as much fun looking at our inventory as we had buying it. Check back often because we love to change it out, move things around and are always keepin’ it fresh!

T
he truth about hypnosis is that this self help tool helps ordinary people with ordinary, everyday problems. Hypnosis is a natural, yet altered state of mind that all people have experienced but perhaps not realized. Anyone who desires to be hypnotized can be hypnotized. Most concerns are about a fear of loss of control, mostly due to stage hypnosis demonstrations. The fact is that hypnosis actually teaches us to have more control of our thoughts and behavior. I specialize in Hypnotherapy as developed by Gil Boyne and Emile Coue. I was trained at the Hypnotherapy Academy of America in New Mexico. This school is recognized world wide as a leader in this self help technique. Hypnotherapy allows the client to review and change deeply held beliefs from earlier in their lives that are limiting his/her current life. When those beliefs are subjected to the clients review and reevaluation, he/she can make different choices as to how they respond and how those memories will affect their current life choices. Thus eliminating self sabotaging behaviors and making goals easier to achieve. The Hypnotherapist's job is to assist the client in achieving their goals. We do this by using time proven hypnotic methods. Hypnotherapy is safe, effective and proven to assist with: stress reduction, smoking cessation, overeating, phobias, healing visualization, migraines, headaches, setting and achieving goals, and more! 207 N. Tish’s goal as a clinician is to get to both cause and source of each client’s symptoms. Her specialty areas include: pain and injury, wellness and prevention, and sport-specific training. Working with local eating disorder specialists, she also offers physical therapy for individuals struggling with anorexia, bulimia, and obesity. Her primary role in eating disorder intervention is to address the orthopedic and cardiac complications of the disorder. On the ergonomic side of her practice, Tish and her associates perform ergonomic analyses of workstations in office, industrial and healthcare settings. The purpose of ergonomics is to identify risk factors that predispose employees to cumulative trauma and address them through worker education and workstation customization. The preliminary goal is to fit the workstation to the worker, with the ultimate goal of preventing pain and injury. Cancer is a Metabolic disease as if Cancer is Metabolic Parasites: Thomas Seyfried, Ph.D. on Ketogenic Diet for Cancer Therapy by Simon Yu, MD
T
he Ketogenic Diet has been used, with great success, since the 1920’s by John Hopkins Hospital and the Mayo Clinic for the management of brittle diabetes and seizures. However, it has not been a widely accepted standard medical therapy after the introduction of insulin and seizure medications. It became a less known, almost forgotten diet until recently. The latest scientific studies indicate that the Ketogenic Diet can also be used effectively as a complementary cancer therapy with a new understanding of the metabolism of cancer cells. This article is mainly focusing on Dr. Thomas Seyfried’s idea of the Ketogenic Diet as a main nutritional therapy for cancer management based on science and biochemistry. All cancer cells rely on glucose (glycolysis fermentation) as the predominant source of energy for survival. This is often referred to as the Warburg Effect. Thomas Seyfried, Ph.D. published a book, Cancer as a Metabolic Disease in 2012. His book is a ground breaking new approach to understanding and treating cancer based on Dr. Otto Warburg’s Warburg Effect and the Ketogenic Diet. If you have cancer, you need to read his book. It may save your life. Otto Warburg won the Nobel Prize in 1931 for his discovery of oxygen transferring enzymes and the mode of action of the respiratory enzyme. He was nominated for a second Nobel Prize for his work on Nicotinamide and discovering flavin (the yellow enzyme) but it was denied by Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime. His most important work was on cancer cell metabolism. He proved that aerobic glycolysis fermentation is the hallmark of cancer regardless of the tissue origin. But his work was challenged, dismissed, and forgotten by mainstream medical academic institutions. Previously, many medical doctors tried to bring his ideas back into the mainstream by applying a low carb/low sugar diet. This diet mimicks the Ketogenic Diet to curb the growth of tumors. This has met with limited acceptance and success because the mainstream did not fully understand the Ketogenic diet and metabolism of cancer cells. Chemo, radiation, and surgery became the main stream
therapy for cancer management for the last 60 years. If I mention Ketogenic Diet to my patients, most of my patients have no idea what I’m talking about. They think it is too medically esoteric for them to understand or they are terrorized with a gruesome dangerous starvation diet. Fasting is the fastest way to go into the ketogenic state but fasting does not mean starvation. I previously wrote an article, “40 day Fast for Parasite Eradication” (available on my website). 40 day fast is the ultimate Ketogenic Diet. Metabolically, cancer behaves like metabolic parasites according to Dr. Tim Guilford, MD. He presented a lecture on glutathione, cancer, and the Warburg Effect at the 8th International Alternative Medical Conference in St. Louis. We are always looking for a new diet for a new cure. If you get tired of hearing of the Ketogenic Diet and are looking for an exotic fancy diet, how about we modify the name “Ketogenic Diet” and call it the Genghis Kahn Diet? Genghis Khan Diet is battle proven, starving and terrorizing the enemy called cancer, the metabolic parasite. Thomas Seyfreid’s book extensively covers the metabolic management of cancer with the Ketogenic Diet. His book is technical with lots of biochemistry and not an easy to book to read. For the general public, you may want to start first with “The Cantin Ketogenic Diet” by Elaine Cantin. Dr. Seyfried covers much more in depth on the origin, management, and prevention of cancer. Read his book. It may save your life. The highlights of his major conclusions of the book include: 1. No real progress has been made in the management of advanced or metastatic cancer for more than 40 years. 2. Most of the conceptual advances made in understanding the mechanisms of cancer have more to do with non-metastatic tumors than metastatic tumors. 3. Most cancer, regardless of cell or tissue origin, is a singular disease of respiratory insufficiency coupled with compensatory glycolysis fermentation as a primary cause of cancer. 4. Secondary causes of cancer include age, viral infection, hypoxia, inflammation, rare inherited mutations, radiation, and carcinogens.
5. Genomic instability seen in tumors is a downstream epiphenomenon and makes cancer cells vulnerable to metabolic stress. 6. Cancer cells do not have a growth advantage over normal cells. 7. Cancer progression is not Darwinian but Lamarkian. 8. Most cancer is not a genetic disease. Therefore, gene research into the causes of cancer is no longer credible. 9. Respiratory injury can explain Szent-Gyorgyi’s oncogenic paradox. 10. Most metastatic cancers arise from respiratory injury in the myeloid origin of macrophages. 11. Cancer cells depend on glucose and glutamine metabolism for survival and growth. 12. Restricted access to glucose and glutamine will comprise cancer cell growth and survival. 13. Enhanced glycolysis fermentation is largely responsible for tumor cell drug resistance. 14. Protection of mitochondria from oxidative damage will prevent or reduce risk of cancer. 15. Lifestyle changes will be needed to manage and
prevent cancer 16. Mitochondria enhancement therapies administered together with drugs that target glucose and glutamine metabolism will go far as a nontoxic, cost effective solution to the cancer problem. 17. A new era will emerge for cancer management and prevention, once cancer becomes recognized as a metabolic disease. Dr. Simon Yu, M.D. is a Board Certified Internist. Ffresh R E S H fare FARE Avoid Alzheimer’s Through Diet by Kari Hartel, RD, LD Program Coordinator, Cooking Matters, Operation Food Search
N
ovember is Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and research continues to prove that diet and exercise can play a huge role in preventing this unfortunate disease, which affects more than five million Americans. Alzheimer’s disease is now so prevalent that it is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. While there are many factors that influence the development of Alzheimer’s disease, there are steps you can take to help reduce your risk. Here are the steps you can take to cut your risk: • Keep your intake of saturated fat and trans fat to a minimum. Sources of saturated fat include meats, dairy products, baked goods and tropical oils (coconut oil, palm oil and palm kernel oil). Sources of trans fat include fried foods and baked goods, including pastries, pie crusts, biscuits, cookies, crackers, stick margarines and shortenings.
• Base your diet around vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes. • Go nuts! Be sure to include a daily dose of disease-fighting nuts or seeds, which are rich in vitamin E and flavonoids. Aim for one ounce each day—about one small handful. • Favor fatty fish for brain fitness. Fatty fish provide you with noggin-nourishing omega-3 fatty acids. Fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, trout, albacore tuna, sardines and herring, may help lower your blood levels of beta-amyloid—a protein that could play a part in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. • Add berries, which boast a bounty of polyphenols—a kind of antioxidant that can reduce chronic inflammation—to reduce inflammation, slashing your risk for disease. • Popeye was right when he advised you to each your spinach. Leafy green veggies such as spinach, kale, and collards are loaded with fiber, vitamin C and antioxidants. They’re so mighty that studies have shown they can

improve memory and other cognitive functioning. • Score brain-boosting points by adding spices to your dishes, particularly turmeric. Turmeric, which is used to flavor curries, contains a powerful compound called curcumin that has been shown to prevent Alzheimer’s disease. A study out of UCLA revealed that when curcumin is paired with vitamin D3 it may help the immune system eliminate plaque in the brain that is correlated with Alzheimer’s disease. • Keep your morning coffee habit. Research has found that people who had higher blood levels of caffeine (from two to three cups of coffee per day) developed Alzheimer’s disease two to four years later than people whose blood levels of caffeine were lower. • Indulge your sweet tooth with dark chocolate, which is chock-full of flavonoids that increase circulation and delay the progression of dementia. • Don’t forget about physical activity. Cornucopia: horn of Plenty by Crystal Moore-Stevens
A
ccording to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the word cornucopia is derived from the Latin term cornu copiae, meaning horn of plenty. The cornucopia is revered as a symbol of bounty or abundance; it is typically described as a “curved goat’s horn overflowing with fruits and grains”. Although we attribute the cornucopia to be emblematic of the bountiful harvest of the North American holiday of Thanksgiving, it can actually be traced back to Classical Antiquity. Many explanations of its origin and its symbolism can be found in Greek Mythology. Greek Gods Zeus and Hercules as well as Demeter, the Goddess of the Harvest have each been mentioned in varying stories of its origin. In one anecdote, Zeus as an infant was nursed and nourished by Almathea, a she goat. One tale mentions that he created the horn of plenty to repay her for nourishing him. As farmers, the cornucopia for us symbolizes a bountiful and abundant harvest. The autumn bounty is overflowing from our fields to our tables. The fields of rich dark earth across the region of the Mississippi River Valley are alive with nutrients; they are continuously providing nourishment to us. It is truly a time of gratitude. The Thanksgiving Holiday for us marks the time to glean the fields. We harvest every last crop and make a huge donation to the nearby Food Pantry. Ask The
HERB LADY Cathy Schram Q: Lately, I have noticed spider veins forming in my legs. I am afraid they will turn into varicose veins. Are there are any herbs that may help improve this condition?
Professional Barter. A Winning Strategy for Your Business.
A: Spider veins, which are very common, often lead to varicose veins. This is considered a venous disorder because the vein wall is weakened or damaged causing the blood flow to be slow, thereby pooling in the vein. Fortunately, the best method of treatment is prevention and early intervention. Horse Chestnut seed extract helps tone and strengthen blood vessels and inhibits the action of enzymes that can damage capillary walls. It also helps speed the blood flow through the veins. Horse Chestnut should not be used by individuals with existing kidney, liver or bleeding disorders. It does act as a blood thinner so use with caution if taking other blood thinners. Butcher’s Broom has been successful in treating vein disorders because of its vasoconstrictive and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also very beneficial to take Vitamin C and bioflavonoids to help strengthen the collagen structure in the veins. You can find all of these important supplements in a combination designed specifically for varicose veins.

Any Advice for spider veins or UTis Q: I tend to get frequent urinary tract infections. Do you think that drinking cranberry juice on a daily basis can really help deter the infections? A: Absolutely. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) and overactive bladders are very common problems in both women and men. They are caused by bacteria or germs that live in the large intestine. The urinary tract gets infected when the germs make their way into the urethra. If this is not treated, the germs can attack the bladder and kidneys, causing a much bigger problem. Cranberry products have been shown to be extremely beneficial in the prevention of UTIs. The substances within the cranberries keep the bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract walls. I prefer cranberry pills over the juice because you get a higher concentration without the extra calories or sugar. This herb information is for health education purposes only. Take A Forest Bath by Linda Wiggen Kraft
T
aking a bath in the forest is not what Forest Bathing is. It is taking a leisurely walk in the woods so that your body, mind and spirit can be bathed in the beauty, fragrance, sounds and sensual experiences of nature. Forest Bathing, or Shinrinyoku, is the official Japanese term for taking a walk in the forest. It is an activity recommended by the Forest Agency of Japan for over twenty-five years as a way to reduce stress and increase relaxation. Most of us who have spent time in woods and nature know of its rejuvenating and healing power. We couldn’t quantify it in any way, but in Japan there are numerous scientific studies that show the healing qualities of Forest Bathing go way beyond relaxation. Dr. Qing Li, MD, PhD, is a professor at Nippon Medical School in Tokyo.
He is a forest researcher, and part of a Forest Medicine program for medical students. Dr. Li’s research has found positive effects from Forest Bathing, including enhancement of the immune system with an increase of NK cells that fight cancer. His studies have also found an increase in energy and relaxation, and a decrease in anxiety, depression, emotional confusion and anger. His research compared Forest Bathers with others who spent time in urban settings and found that these positive effects did not happen outside of the forest. Other measurable benefits were an increase in a hormone that helps with obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders. Some of these effects continued for over a month after Forest Bathing. One of the key healing components is the scent of the forest. Trees emit essential oils that are brought into the body via breath and help in healing. It is also the other sensual experiences of

the forest setting that influence healing. Both urban and rural forests have their positive effects. For Forest Bathing what is important is to have enough trees to create a forest. The wooded area should be at least 1.25 acres. There should be a minimum of ten percent sky coverage by the tree canopy with easily accessible trails that are inviting and draw people into the woods. Narrow hard to follow trails that are covered in too many trees may not feel as welcoming. A leisurely walk, with rest stops if needed are recommended. A twenty minute walk is long enough to show positive changes, but for deeper healing that increases cancer fighting cells, a longer time over several days is recommended. In Japan and South Korea there are sanctioned Forest Therapy Bases that are used for short
walks and walks taking place at various times over several days. We don’t need to travel to Japan to enjoy Forest Bathing though. Both our urban and rural parks offer plenty of access to receive the benefits and healing properties of the forest. Dr. Li recommends that a person enjoy the forest through all the five senses, even touching the trees and leaves to feel their textures. Listen for the birds and wind. Smell the earth and plants. And if there are safe parts of the forest to taste, do so. See all the beauty and bath in it all. lean water is a precious resource. Human development has replaced much of the natural world with buildings and pavement. These hard surfaces allow rainfall to run off, carrying pollutants with it. Resulting rainwater related problems can be addressed with an array of sustainable landscaping practices called “rainscaping”. Fostering more permeable soils and deeper rooted plants to help soak up rain where it falls is the primary focus, with the ultimate goal being to improve water quality in our region. What can we do to be good stewards of the water in our region and beyond? Rainscaping includes alternatives such as rain gardens and bioswales, planting trees, replacing lawn with perennials and shrubs, or installing rain barrels that overflow into a garden. The Deer Creek Watershed Alliance, a project of Missouri Botanical Garden, promotes rainscaping that aids in reducing the amount and velocity of stormwater runoff. For a limited time, incentives and rebates are available. Any homeowner is eligible to register for a drawing to receive prizes. The grand prize is a $500 certificate to purchase plants at the Spring Shaw Wildflower Market May 9 and 10, 2014. For prize drawing details and information on how to rainscape, see the RainScaping Guide at www.mobot.org/rainscaping. In addition, within participating municipalities, a property owner can apply for a rebate of up to 75% of expenses (or a maximum of $2000.00) to implement one or more rainscaping features. Round Three applications will be available November 15th online at www.deercreekalliance.org or at the city halls of participating municipalities. To view a list of municipalities, visit the same website. Where do you start? Begin by taking a close look at your property and what happens to water on
your property when it rains. Do you have soil erosion? Do you have low, wet areas where grass doesn’t grow? Consider native plants that grow in wet soils. Do you have large expanses of mowed turf? Perhaps some of that could be replaced with shrubs and ground covers. Eliminate the use of pesticides—these add to water pollution when dissolved in stormwater runoff. Do you have steep slopes with soil erosion that are difficult to mow? Consider native hardy shrubs and perennials that thrive in these areas. There are many plant-based solutions to these problems that multi-task as solutions to our region’s stormwater management issues. Native plants are encouraged because they are well adapted to our region, replace lost habitat, and increase biodiversity. Can one person make a difference? Each of us can make a positive impact. We all live in a watershed—an area of land where rainfall drains to a creek, river or other body of water. What we do on our own property impacts everyone downstream. As we move into a future that demands more sustainable solutions, we can look to nature for some of the answers, and consider creating landscapes that are functional as well as aesthetic. RainScape Rebates is funded by Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District, Mabel Dorn Reeder Foundation, Missouri Department of Conservation, Great Rivers Greenway, participating municipalities, and US EPA Region 7 through the Department of Natural Resources (subgrant number G11-NPS15), under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act. Cindy Gilberg is a Missouri native and horticulturist whose work includes design and consulting, teaching and writing. Much of her work focuses on native plants, habitat gardens and rain gardens. Cindy’s projects include work at Shaw Nature Reserve and its Native Plant School, the Shaw Profes-sional Landscape Series and the Deer Creek Watershed Alliance. The Power of Ozark Native Plants
M
edicinal wild plants growing in our native environment can be the key to staying strong and healthy. With them we share the wind, sun, seasonal changes and earth energy. We are of the same place.... the same ecological niche. In our global society, we often turn to Chinese herbs or East Indian herbs growing on the other side of the planet. I believe in the power of our Ozark native plants. The wild weed growing at your door may be a remarkable herbal remedy. The decades-long revival of “Essiac” is proof of the medicine in native weeds. Essiac is a blend of burdock root, sheep sorrel, slippery elm bark, and rhubarb root. The formula was given to a Canadian nurse in 1920 by a Chippewa medicine man. The nurse’s name was Rene Caisse. (Essiac is her last name spelled backwards.) Rene helped hundreds of cancer patients with these humble plants. The Essiac herbs grow wild in our own Missouri Ozark fields and forests. The herbs of Essiac are a powerful combination. In the thirty years I have provided it, I’ve seen it help cancer, diabetes, glaucoma, arthritis, bacterial and viral infections in addition to numerous other conditions. This powerful herbal blend builds the immune system, removes toxins and strengthens the body to heal itself. Herbs maintain the balance of body, mind, heart and spirit. Using herbs over a period of time brings health and wellness. Be committed and consistent, taking the appropriate herb one month for every year the condition has been present. Herbs support the body to heal itself deeply and at its own pace. Educate yourself to the proper dosage and the right plant remedy. Each of us is unique and an herb
The Healthy Planet magazine • TheHealthyPlanet.com that helps one may not help the other. Know your body and which herbs are your allies. Buy herbs from a store that circulates the herbs quickly. Medicinal herb tea diminishes in potency after one year. Buy only organic or ethically wildcrafted plants. Imported herbs are fumigated at the shipping docks as they enter the country. The pesticides that have been banned here in the US are shipped to other countries and they come right back at us on our food, herbs and coffees. Never consume an herb that has been gathered from a roadside or near a railroad track. These areas have a high concentration of chemical pollution. Know where your herbs come from. Best yet... grow or gather your own. Many local herbs have been over gathered by enthusiastic wildcrafters. There are plant hunters who are in it only for the buck and sell to the buyer at the local feed store. Echinacea, St. John’s Wort and Sheep Sorrel are stolen from roadsides. Ginseng, Skullcap and Goldenseal are poached from woodlands. Plants are harvested at the wrong time of year, reducing medicinal potency. Every plant is removed, leaving none to reseed the plant community. An ethical wildcrafter takes only what is needed at the proper time of year and leaves the patch to recover. I always leave an offering of thanks and never harvest the oldest plants. There are hundreds of wild native medicinal herbs and it can seem overwhelming. Start your quest with just a few...five or so. Learn the medicinal properties, the botanical names, how they look and smell, where they grow, which part is used (leaf, flower, bark, root), the time of year they should be harvested and how your body responds. You will find yourself developing an intuitive relationship with your plant allies and healing through the power of Ozark native plants. Plan For A Pet-Safe Thanksgiving Holiday by Dr. Doug Pernikoff, DVM
T
hanksgiving is that wonderful time of year, our woodlands adorned with fall flora, cool weather changes, and the portal for Christmas and New Year's seasons following close behind. What's to Worry?!?!? All that great food! Bad for our waistlines, and maybe, worse for our beloved pets!! So many goodies! The general rule is to go ahead and 'stuff the turkey, not your pets'. Any unfamilar diet items can pose a problem. Excess gas, diarrhea, vomiting and worse! Those are the general signs to watch for. More severe signs like bloody stool, lethargy, and severe conditions like pancreatitis or stomach bloat can ensue. All these issues, aside from making our pets ill, costs lots of money at the emergency veterinary hospitals! Certainly, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And, don't forget to secure the trash cans and trash bags to assure that Fido or Felix do not find their way into all those tasty morsels. Items like turkey and chicken meat can carry organisms like Salmonella, as they sit out and denature. The turkey bones are hollow and splinter easily. Foreign bodies lodged anywhere along the intestinal tract, from mouth to tush, can impose major concerns, leading to surgeries that again, are costly, and can prove life threatening to our babies. Bloat is an animal in it's own right. This syndrome is much more prevalent in mid to large and giant breeds. Excessive water drinking or unusual food items producing gas, both distend the stomach. If it becomes too enlarged, like a water balloon, it tends to turn on its axis, and subsequently, twist off it's own blood supply. There is another issue. The spleen lies along the side of the stomach, and where the stomach goes, so goes the spleen. When the blood supply is twisted off to either, or to both organs, there is immediate tissue death and toxins released that can affect the heart, and worse. These animals tend to get very sick and even can die within hours. If you note your dog's stomach is swelling; if they stand uncomfortably as though in a trance, or if they try to vomit repeatedly, better get to your vet ASAP. Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas

organ, which produces both hormones like insulin and glucagon, for sugar metabolism; but, also has cells that produce the enzymes for digestion in our upper small intestines. Fatty foods and other unfamiliar food items can stimulate an overproduction of those enzymes that leak out and actually irritate the very tissues that produce them. Pets can get very ill, very quickly. Again, vomiting and excessive soft, voluminous stools are not uncommon. Fever, lethargy are also very frequent reports. Most times, your vet will need to hospitalize your pet and treat with fluids, antibiotics and other intestinal protectants. This syndrome tends to be more chronic and can recur with ever so slight a change in palate. This is why most vets will ask owners to minimize the treats provided and keep foods as consistent as possible. If you decide you wish to change a diet item, please do it with caution, and slowly, over 10-14 days. As a general rule, avoid items like onions, grapes, raisins and other components of our Thanksgiving entree and desserts. Be safe and avoid issues by avoiding feeding practice changes around the holidays! Have a wonderful, family packed event this year. Love to all your pets and to you as well! Helping the Geriatric Cat Reclaim Interest in Self and Life by Ava Frick, DVM, CAC, FAIS
C
ats, one of nature's most fastidious animals, suffer from dandruff, dirty skin, and matting fur as they age. This condition is very annoying to this once neat and clean creature. Petting them can even appear to be uncomfortable. This is due to the cat's inability to maneuver and do ritualistic routine grooming. Arthritis and lack of flexibility of the spine are the greatest factors in the progression of this problem. Depression and geriatric diseases can further reduce the cat’s interest in grooming. There are several things you can do to help geriatric cats maintain respectability: 1) Give regular baths. Believe it or not most cats will appreciate you for doing this, after it is all over. 2) Have a warm spot in the winter for those achy bones to rest. Use a heating blanket or pad on low, or, better yet, invest in a sauna (such as the ones available from FaunaSauna.com). Make sure it is on a height level where the cat can easily get to. You will often find the cat resting there, and their mobility will be better from improved circulation. 3) Reduce the arthritic symptoms with supplements containing hyaluronan and colostrum. The products I find that fit these parameters and consistently give good results is Trixsyn, a flavorless liquid manufactured by Cogent Solutions, and Duralactin capsules, which you can open and sprinkle into canned food or cat-friendly liquid. 4) Get chiropractic adjustments to improve motion of the spine and legs. Cats can get chiropractic adjustments and will usually enjoy them. I have adjusted many geriatric cats, and their owners report back that their older cats can jump and maneuver better after each visit. By bathing them and doing a few simple things, your senior citizen felines can feel much younger, rekindling interest in self and life. There are a few steps to take that will simplify bathing a cat. Start with putting on a long sleeve shirt and button the cuffs. This way if kitty decides to try and escape, and reaches for you, the claws will grab the shirt and not your skin. Split a cotton ball and put half in each ear. Apply a bleb of Vaseline to each eye to protect against any soap that may get in them. If the shampoo is too thick, dilute some into a smaller squeeze bottle. That way it won’t glob out, waste product, and be difficult to rinse clean. Fill a tub with warm water and fill 2 pitchers with warm rinse water, as well as an empty one for the initial dirty rinse. Do not turn the faucet on while the cat is in the sink. Water rushing out of the faucet will send them out faster than you can blink. Now you are ready to put kitty into the sink con-
tainer and use the empty pitcher to rinse. Start with legs and body leaving the head for last. Lather, scrub gently, and massage those tired muscles. Now lightly use 1-2 fingers to lather the head avoiding eyes and inside the ears. To begin rinsing, use the water that kitty has been sitting in to do the first pass. Follow with those pre-filled pitchers. Do not pour water onto the face but use a sponge instead to direct water flow and remove the soap, avoiding the eyes. Once the soap has been washed away, wrap kitty up in towel #1. Compress the towel to pull the water from the fur. Repeat with towel #2, rubbing as you go. Turn on the hair dryer, holding it at a distance and check a tolerance level. Introduce gradually, getting closer and closer. Use the dryer to remove the majority of the moisture. Moisten the Q-tips with alcohol and use it to clean grease and grime from the ears. Only get where your eyes can see; do not go further into the ear canal than what you can actually see. Wipe the eyes of any residual Vaseline. Comb out remaining mats, finishing with an after-bath conditioner if needed. Put kitty in a warm isolated place to finish preening. Repeat this process up to twice a month as needed to keep the senior citizen cat dandruff free and comfortable. An easy way to trim a cat’s nails is to hold human toenail clippers side ways to trim the nails to protect yourself from harm; older cats generally have overgrown nails due to lack of use. They are much easier to trim than a dog's nails, as they are separated into very thick and thin sections. Trim off the narrow sharp points while avoiding the thick base. This spring, on a milestone date for me, I heard my uncle Travis Blackmore, who was then 87, add his personal saga into our nation’s historical treasury.
www.freeflowtherpay.com
World War II was raging when Trav left his home in Mexico, Missouri to join the U.S. Navy. Serving as a radioman in the Pacific Theater, he saw Marines raise the American flag on Iwo Jima. He was aboard the U.S.S. Lindsey, a minelayer destroyer, on April 12, 1945, when kamikaze pilots swarmed his ship. Trav was working less than 30 feet from where the bow blew to kingdom come, killing 57 sailors and wounding him and 56 more. Trav recalled being “airlifted” from his stricken ship in little more than a canvas sling, feeling fear more than pain as he dangled helpless in mid-air. He proudly reported having received his Purple Heart from Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz, although, still being in hospital, he was not fully aware of that honor, that day. Travis told his story to the camera on April 13, 2013. It was 68 years and one day after his brush with death on the Lindsey. He wore his

Purple Heart and a souvenir cap from a 20th annual Lindsey crew reunion he attended in 1995. Afterwards he quietly told me, “I left out the part about pulling bodies out of the water . . . “ After Travis finished his story, we listened to another elderly gentleman, Lee Roy Temming, recount his service in the U.S. Army. Lee Roy fought on Omaha Beach, and then in the Battle of the Bulge. He would have continued into the next wave but medical authorities said he was suffering battle fatigue. Travis had a reserved way of speaking. He answered the interviewer’s question, stopped and waited for the next one, for nearly an hour. Lee Roy was a natural raconteur. His story was liberally garnished with frauleins and mademoiselles. He had not repeated himself when the DVD’s 90 minutes had filled. I sat spellbound through both narrations, seeing movies in my mind with a vivid edge I can still recall. Trav’s was a documentary, and Lee Roy’s was a feature film. They modestly shared bravery and recounted unspeakable destruction, never flinching from horrors lived when Trav was only 19 and Lee Roy a grown-up 22. Both men spoke from wheelchairs. They were living in a nursing home. At the end of his interview Lee Roy said, “Hey, thanks for caring what we did!” About a month later, my family replayed Travis’ interview at his funeral. It was sweet and painful to once more hear his voice, telling his story of service, a quietly stated epic of valor, knowing he is held in history now. The Missouri Veterans’ History Project welcomes the story of any veteran, whether of combat or peacetime service. Information and appointments can be accessed through www.mvhp.net or by calling 573-522-4220. Thanks to Alternative Hospice, a Healthy Planet client, for coordinating these veteran interviews. Jean Ponzi presents environmental stories, Mondays 7-8 p.m. on KDHX-FM “Earthworms” and Sundays 1-2 p.m. on “Growing Green St. Louis” on the Big 550KTRS-AM.

abies are adorable, there is no denying that, but newborns don’t do a whole lot. It’s fun to watch them sleep and wiggle but that’s all there really is to it. Now that my son Jackson is 3 months old, he in finally starting to act like a little person. When you smile at him, he flares his nostrils and smiles back, and when you sing to him he coos and and wiggles excitedly. About a week ago he had his first laugh and I cried because it was the most amazingly perfect sound, more of a high pitched giggle. It was unlike anything else I had ever experienced. Now he will smile when his daddy makes funny faces and he’ll giggle and coo for no reason at all, a sound that can brighten even our worst days. Now that it’s getting chilly, I expected Jackson to have more trouble sleeping, but thanks to Aden and Anais organic swaddles, he sleeps warmly and soundly through the night. If your little one is having trouble sleeping, I highly recommend checking out Verde Kids and their line of Aden and Anais products, because they are organic and very soft. I also can’t wait until Verde kids starts carrying their fleece mittens and hats this winter, because I want nothing more than to accessorize my little boy in cute warm outfits. We are dedicated to serving our patients and promoting a level of health care that carefully evaluates and reviews the use of dental materials, dental procedures and also offers dietary and nutritional support for each and every individual that is seen in our office.
Did you know that examining the mouth can reveal the presence of illnesses or unstable conditions in other areas of the body? If you feel like you’ve just about exhausted all your options in your search for better health, have your mouth examined with a different approach in mind. Get motivated, get educated, and get ready to participate in a
health-oriented lifestyle that will provide dental alternatives and a nutritional foundation designed to help support your own body’s healing powers.
The focus of holistic dentistry is to consider the mouth as a part of the whole body. We use materials and methods that are more compatible biologically with the body instead of the traditional dental materials. Examples of non-compatible materials are mercury fillings, non-precious heavy metal crowns, bridges and partials or dentures. Alternatives to fluoride are used
for the prevention of cavities. Proper alignment of the jaws and teeth are the foundation of how the body perceives itself in space. The result of improper alignment can result in symptoms of headache, ears ringing, loss of hearing, pain in the head and neck and clenching or grinding of the teeth. Good nutrition is inseparable for good
health. If your diet consists of food and drink made with white flour, sugar and no fresh fruits and vegetables, your body is likely to be acidic with resultant more medical and dental problems. For your dental evaluation contact our office for an appointment by calling 636-4589090 or email at cherryhillsdds@yahoo.com.

“VIRTUE” with
Chaplain Paul
K, what is a virtue? You have certainly heard the phrase, “Patience is a virtue”. The dictionary says that a virtue is a particular moral excellence. In my work with patients and clients I see a consistent pattern in peoples’ lives regarding the effects of “Impatience” and how toxic it can be. Patience truly can be a moral principal in a person’s life that can provide maturity, self-confidence and spiritual strength. Other virtues such as charity, humility, love and faith can foster spiritual wellness in a myriad of ways. In the same way our physical bodies can suffer when there is a deficiency in certain minerals and vitamins, our wellbeing can suffer deeply when there is a deficiency in the key moral principles that feed, shape and define our core beliefs and character. Let’s take a look at what the dictionary says about the virtue of... PATIENCE. 1. The quality of being patient, as the bearing of provocation, annoyance, misfortune, or pain, without complaint, loss of temper, irritation, or the like. 2. An ability or willingness to suppress rest lessness or annoyance when confronted with delay. 3. Quiet, steady perseverance; even-tempered care; diligence. IMPATIENCE 1. Lack of patience. 2. Eager desire for relief or change; restlessness.
3. Intolerance of anything that thwarts, delays, or hinders. Impatience can have a devastating impact on us and rob us from valuable life experience. Let’s look at a few things that it causes. First, it causes you to become something most people don’t want to be. It makes you egocentric, self-centered. It takes you away from listening and being in the present moment. It contaminates communication and prevents vital information from being shared and understood. It makes the other person believe that you don’t really care about them or what they think and feel. It puts you in a place of angst and irritability that ultimately is toxic to you in body, mind and spirit. I really like number three in the definition of patience. Quiet, steady perseverance; even-tempered care; diligence. It also: Opens the door for empathic communication to take place. Slows down communication in a way that allows feeling, cognition and understanding to be achieved. It allows for love and compassion to be experienced. It builds trust It creates meaningful bonds between people I leave you with a challenge. Take a hard look at how you handle patience in your life. Set some goals to manifest a quiet and calm presence, a steady perseverance, an even-tempered caring and managing your communication with marked diligence. Remember, “Patience is a virtue”, a particular moral excellence! Dr. Yu and I want to invite you again to our Medical Spiritual Wellness Support Group at Prevention and Healing. The group meets on the third Tuesday of each month from: 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. The address is: 10908 Schuetz Road St Louis, Mo 63146. Next Meeting Tuesday November 19, 2013. Learn To MediTaTe For opTiMaL HeaLTH Primordial Sound Meditation a program developed By deepak Chopra, M.d.
Dr. Deepak Chopra, best selling author and leader in the holistic health field, has revived Primordial Sound Meditation. This ancient form of meditation uses mantras, or Primordial Sounds, which are selected for each individual. This simple mantra technique, which is practiced twice daily, allows our awareness to go beyond the activity of our mind to the stillness of our spirit. This process allows our bodies to gain the deep rest necessary to release stress and fatigue. The result can be improved health, more satisfying relationships, increased creativity, and renewed enthusiasm for life. Primordial Sound Meditation can be learned by people of any age, culture, and educational background. It is recommended for anyone who wishes to enjoy greater peace, freedom and fulfillment. About the Instructor, Shirley Stoll, B.S., M.A. - Shirley has been involved with meditation since 1995 and is certified by Dr. Deepak Chopra as a Primordial Sound Meditation Instructor and affiliated with the Chopra Center in Carlsbad, California. As a former teacher, she combines her love for teaching with her commitment to meditation.

Emotional Peace For The Holidays By Dorothy Tomasic, M.A. Certified EPT Works and Emotion Code Practitioner
E
motional Peace, oh, doesn’t that just sound relaxing, nurturing, centering and… well, peaceful! Breathe in Peace, breathe out worry and stress. As we enter into the holiday season and begin expending our time and energy on extra planning, shopping, visiting, entertaining and you name it, our lives at times may seem anything but peaceful! During this time of heightened activity and involvement, can come added stress to our bodies and our minds. We tend to work off of a very long list of what needs to get done, focusing on others, their needs and wishes. Of course, this focus on others is an important theme for the holidays! Even so, it is important to continue to take care of ourselves, allowing us to be present and available, in a balanced way to the people most important to us. Continuing and not forgoing Peace inducing activities and practices such as walking, yoga, rest, meditation or even receiving a healing therapy you enjoy is especially important during the holidays. You may already know that practicing Forgiveness promotes Emotional Peace. Is there someone or something in your life you need to forgive? A family member? A boss? A decision? Yourself? Is there an upcoming gathering you want to avoid because unresolved hurts may resurface? Breathing in thoughts of forgiveness and compassion for the person you have a grievance with (and that person may be you) and then breathing out the pain or hurt allows for a release of pent up emotional energy, making room for new, fresh energy to fill you and help heal your heart. If forgiveness is tricky for you, you may need to forgive yourself for believing that you don’t know how to forgive! The simple action of breathing in forgiveness and letting go of anger, resentment and hurt is healing. To
stretch the action further, you can think of the person who hurt you in a new way, sending them love and compassion. Forgiveness is not about forgetting or overlooking a hurt, it is about making a decision and choice to feel and then release our pain in order to free ourselves from the past. Study after study has found that forgiving is good for the body as well as the soul. During this holiday season, when Peace is the goal and extra time may be hard to come by, try simply breathing in Peace and Forgiveness, and breathing out what doesn’t serve you. For further study on how to forgive, the two books I like to share are: Forgive for Good by Frederic Luskin and Radical Forgiveness by Colin Tipping. May your holiday season be filled with an abundance of Emotional Peace! For more information or to set up an appointment with Dorothy, please visit www.myessentialconnections.com or call 636.821.1158.

Insider tips for Healthy Planet readers:
L
ove classical guitar? Regular readers of this column know I love the flourish of an acoustic guitar. I must have been a senorita in a past life because this is music that just “speaks” to me. St. Louisans are fortunate to have the Classical Guitar Society that regularly brings world-class guitarists to our community. If you crave more info about this great musical artform, listen to Inside Classical Guitar on the new classical music station, Radio Arts Foundation at FM 107.3. The program is hosted by Guitar Society President Bill Ash and well-known radio personality John Clayton, every Monday evening at 7 p.m. Missed a show or two? All shows are archived at www.GuitarStLouis.net. Upcoming shows will feature the music of the Guitar Society’s seasonal guest artists. Tired of the “usual” photography exhibitions? Check out “An Altered Reality” at PHD Gallery on Cherokee. The exhibition features the works by two distinct photographers. Linda Mueller’s work is reminiscent of paintings by Salvador Dali---eerie yet intriguing, and definitely compelling. Emily

Sinquefield collection. Rex Sinquefield has often been called one of the world’s leading financial gurus. He is now best known for using his time and resources for civic and philanthropic causes. Raised in Saint Vincent Orphanage in Saint Louis, Sinquefield earned a business degree from Saint Louis University, a Master in Business Administration from the University of Chicago, and went on to develop some of the nation’s first index funds, which trust rather than “outsmart” the market. Along with associate David Booth, Sinquefield formed Dimensional Fund Advisors in 1981, which today oversees more than $220 billion in global assets. After retiring in 2005, Sinquefield returned to his much-loved and dearly missed State of Missouri, with the hopes of using his experience and success to invest in more philanthropic ventures. utumn has always been a creative season for musician Mark Holland. Having named his musical project, Autumn's Child partly based on this fact . There was also the influence of color and texture that is found in nature contributing to the naming of his group as well. Not just coincidence there is also musical color and texture found in music and it is showcased in the music Holland writes and plays with Autumn's Child. So it is fitting that Autumn's Child should appear in a special concert at the Sheldon Concert Hall on November 19. Also with November being Native American Heritage month it makes this concert even more special with the Native American Flute being featured. Mark Holland is an award winning musician who performs with a variety of Native American Flutes. His newest cd, "Circle of Sound" will be debuted

Through January 20, 2014 Harry’s Big advenTure: My Bug World! The Saint Louis Science Center opened its doors for an insect invasion as it hosts Harry’s Big Adventure: My Bug World! Oct. 19, 2013 through Jan. 20, 2014. The exhibition, which was developed by national pest control company Terminix, is a multisensory experience that immerses visitors into the world of bugs by introducing them to thousands of live insects. Hosted by Harry, a Chinese praying mantis, and his insect friends, Harry’s Big Adventure: My Bug World! takes visitors on a unique journey through the habitats, sights, sounds and social structures of some of nature’s smallest, yet most important, contributors. “We are so excited to host Harry’s Big Adventure,” said Jackie Mollet, Senior Director of Exhibits at the Saint Louis Science Center. “The hands-on nature of the exhibition, coupled with thousands of live bugs, makes this fun and educational for all of our visitors.” Harry’s Big Adventure takes guests on an educational journey around the world through six distinct zones to see how insects impact their surroundings, the environment and ultimately human lives. Filled with interactive games and competitions, visitors can see how far they can spit a cricket, pick their favorite roach in the Roach Race, get up close and personal with insects in the Bug Petting Zoo and even try an insect delicacy cooked up by the Bug Chef. We want to welcome you to the world of PEMF: Pulsed Electromagnetic Field. PEMF is widely used in Europe and other parts of Russia and Asia, where it has been a standard therapy. While this is a new technology in North America, it is really an innovative, emerging technology with extensive research and useage behind it. The MG-PRO is a generator that produces a DC (direct current) pulsed electromagnetic field of varying strengths delivered via insulated cables. No current of any kind comes into contact with the body. The magnetic field energy produced at the cable passes freely through living tissue for the purpose of cellular exercise to promote and support a sense of well being.
Studies of PEMF include astounding results with: Anxiety Disorders Athletic Performance AutoImmune Back Pain Bone/Osteo Burns Cancer Depression Epilepsy
Fibromyalgia Hormones Injury Recovery Intelligence Melatonin Migraine Multiple Sclerosis Neural Regeneration Neurological
Osteo Arthritis Osteoporosis PAIN Parkinson’s Rheumatoid Arthritis Sleep Stroke Vascular Vision
