COALITION REPORT

MCE Green Onion Gala Set For Oct. 11
E
very fall, the Missouri Coalition for the Environment (MCE) hosts an anniversary event at which we honor individuals and organizations that have made a positive difference for Missouri’s environment. In October, MCE will honor one individual and two groups with the 2013 Environmental Achievement Awards at our 44th anniversary celebration, the “Green Onion Gala” on October 11, 2013 in St. Louis. This year’s honorees will receive: The Kay and Leo Drey Environmental Stewardship Award to Jean Ponzi, for over 25 years of environmental education in the greater St. Louis community. Jean Ponzi is a frequent Green spokesperson for local and national media and since 1997 has written a monthly column for The Healthy Planet Magazine. For over 24 years, she has produced and hosted the weekly environmental radio talk shows, “Earthworms,” on St. Louis independent radio FM-88.1 KDHX, and more recently has presented “Growing Green St. Louis” on AM-550 KTRS. As Green Resources Manager for the EarthWays Center of Missouri Botanical Garden, Jean coaches sustainable thinking and practice across the region’s business community, and in many general public settings. Jean’s expertise with energy efficiency, recycling and waste reduction, air quality, native plant landscaping, water conservation, Green building and other practical topics has deeply improved the St. Louis regional community and beyond. The first 2013 R. Roger Pryor Citizen Activist Award to an effort known as "The Coldwater CreekJust the Facts Please" group whose presence on Facebook has brought together individuals who research, organize, inform and mobilize action on the issue of radioactive waste contamination and related cancers in
the Coldwater Creek area in St. Louis County. The grassroots leaders include: Jenell Rodden Wright, Kim Thone Visintine, and Diane Whitmore Schanzenbach, all of whom are graduates of McCluer North High School and former residents of neighborhoods near Coldwater Creek, a creek that flows from Lambert Airport north through Hazelwood and Florissant to the Missouri River. Radioactive nuclear weapons wastes were stored outside at Latty Ave. in Hazelwood in the floodplain of Coldwater Creek from the late 1960’s through 1973. Trucks carrying the wastes contaminated streets and yards with the material that contains long-lived Thorium-230 and other hazardous radionuclides. Latty Ave., Coldwater Creek, Lambert Airport and the haul routes are being cleaned up under a federal program called the Formerly Utilized Site Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) that decontaminates such nuclear weapons related contamination. People who grew up along Coldwater Creek and the haul routes before the federal clean up began appear to be suffering the excessive cancers and other health effects of ionizing radiation. The work to get medical help for victims of the contamination is ongoing. A second 2013 R. Roger Pryor Citizen Activist Award to "The West Lake Landfill Group" and the group’s Facebook page administrators, who leverage social media and community organizing to protect and inform citizens about Cold War-era radioactive wastes at the West Lake Landfill in Bridgeton, Missouri, where a subsurface landfill fire is burning 1,000 feet from radioactive nuclear weapons wastes. The grassroots leaders of this effort are: Dawn Chapman, Beth Strohmeyer, and Karen Nickel. The thousands of tons of wastes at West Lake landfill were moved from Latty Ave. and dumped in the West Lake Landfill, a former quarry on St. Charles Rock Road near Earth City. From its beginnings in October 2012, the West Lake Landfill Group has grown to more than 2,500 people. It has mobilized community meetings attracting as many as 650 people, and won increased air monitoring, increased information disclosure, and increased consideration of public health from the Missouri Dept. of Natural Resources and the Dept. of Health & Senior Services. The effort has garnered more than 2,000 signatures on petitions, and engaged dozens of citizen volunteers who have knocked on neighbors’ doors, researched stacks of documents, and made innumerable phone calls to agency and elected officials. The 2013 award honorees have distinguished themselves by informing, empowering, educating and mobilizing others about critically important environmental issues. The Green Onion Gala features local food and flavors from Something Elegant Catering, the music of Tommy Halloran's Guerilla Swing, a silent auction, & awards presented by Ray Hartmann. Beverages provided by Urban Chestnut Brewing Company and Mad Buffalo Distillery. Sponsors include Circle B Ranch, Great Rivers Habitat Alliance, Microgrid Solar, The Healthy Planet magazine, Straight Up Solar, USagain, St.LouisGreen.com, and MPR Supply Company. The Gala will be held October 11, 2013 at Alberici Construction’s LEED Platinum Headquarters at 8800 Page Ave. in St. Louis from 6:30 pm Tickets are available by calling 314.727.0600 or visiting MCE’s website at www.moenviron.org. We hope to see you there!

USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter ECORIDE Connects Green Learners With Opportunities By Johanna Schweiss, USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator
O
n Sunday, October 20th, cyclists and walkers will gather in Soulard at 9 a.m. for the USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter’s Fourth Annual ECORIDE. And while participants will enjoy a day of pedaling or touring the historic Soulard neighborhood, the impact of this event will be felt by members of our community for much longer. Proceeds from the ECORIDE support the Chapter’s Scholarship fund, which provides green building education and training to emerging and young professionals who may not normally have access. With the help of our generous sponsors and riders, our 2012 ride raised $4,000, allowing us to fund two scholarships to the USGBC’s Greening the Heartland Conference and three scholarships covering the LEED Green Associate Exam fees and prep course. Greening the Heartland is the Midwest’s premier conference on green building and sustainability programs. One 2012 scholarship recipient said, “I can honestly say that my experience at the Conference was amazing-it was such a great opportunity to learn so much about sustainability and meet some really interesting and knowledgeable people along the way!” This year’s conference in Chicago was
co-located with the Building Chicago conference, providing scholarship recipients with additional educational opportunities. The LEED professional credentials demonstrate an individual’s knowledge, experience, and credibility in the green building field. Becoming a LEED Green Associate signifies a solid, current understanding of green building principles and practices. Our scholarships include free admission to the Chapter’s comprehensive Exam Prep Course and cover all exam fees. So as you plan your weekends this fall, remember the ECORIDE on Sunday, October 20th! We have several rides to choose from: 8 miles to Lafayette Square, 23 miles up the Riverfront Trail or 54 miles to Jefferson Barracks Park. For those of you who prefer two feet over two wheels, we’re also offering a walking tour of Soulard this year All will start and end at BWorks in Soulard at 2414 Menard, St. Louis, MO 63104. For more information or to register, visit www.usgbc-mogateway.org/scholarships. Your nominal participation fee will go to support our 2014 scholarships, so grab your helmet or put on your walking shoes and join us! After the EcoRide, you still have time to stop by the Healthy Planet Natural Living Expo at the Webster Groves Recreation Complex in Webster Groves. The Expo runs until 4 pm. Free admission after 3 pm.

Wild Eating: From Your Garden and Beyond by Linda Wiggen Kraft
T
he decline in nutrition of plants isn’t something that started with big agriculture, in fact it started during the dawn of the agricultural age, when humans switched from hunter gatherers to growing food. According to some historians, this decline in plant nutrition is over ten thousand years in the making. But how can that be? Basically we humans usually don’t like the taste of wild uncultivated plants that have the most nutrients. These are often bitter fibrous foods that are best for our bodies. For example, dandelion greens have over eight times the antioxidants as spinach, along with more calcium and vitamins. Yet most of us would choose spinach over dandelions. Over the centuries, plants have been breed for their sweet, easily chewed tastes, often leaving behind the vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and other healthy parts that our bodies thrive on. Our plants have become domesticated, less wild and less nutritious. Fortunately many plants still have wild traits, we just need to know what to look for when we buy them in the grocery store, plant them in our gardens, or get them in the wild. A recently written book titled Eating on the
Wild Side, The Missing Link to Optimal Health by Jo Robinson, has changed the way I grocery shop, store food and plant my garden. The book’s premise is described above. It also shares ways to store food to retain nutrients and what particular varieties of vegetables and fruits to buy and grow. The author scoured thousands of studies about the nutrients in plants so we don’t have to turn back into hunter-gatherers. Some of the information is well known already. The reds and purples that are the darkest and brightest colors are most often a sign of high nutrients. In most cases this is due to the plant’s exposure to the sun and resulting chemical reaction. Plants have to protect themselves from the sun, and in so doing create “sun screens” for themselves. These chemicals are the nutrients that are good for our health. For example, leaf lettuce has more sun exposure on all the leaves than romaine, therefore more nutrients. The lettuces with dark colored leaves are best. But greens like dandelions and kale with their less sweet taste provide even more for health. Tomatoes that are red have the most nutrients. Purple cabbage is better than white. Colors are important even when plants grow underground; purple carrots are superior to

top Dressing In Fall For a Healthy Spring lawn
F
eeding plants and your lawn a nutritious diet of compost throughout the year is the key to the best lawn on the block! Top dressing your lawn with compost in autumn is key to making it the greenest on the block come spring. Top dressing, an industry secret among ground crews at golf courses, involves the direct application of a layer of compost and/or other organic material to grass. It's plain to see that with the help of St. Louis Composting and the Ecolawn Top Dresser, compost top dressing can become the core of your natural lawn care program. This annual application of nutrient-rich organic material promotes healthy root structure by: • infusing soil with beneficial microbes and essential minerals • increasing soil aeration • improving drought resistance • lessening soil compaction Top Dressing using STA-Certified Field and Turf Enhancer and the Ecolawn Top Dresser from St. Louis Composting improves soil structure. The addition of our Field and Turf Enhancer allows the soil to be more porous while furthering its water retention by up to 30% more and the development of new roots. By applying our compost with the Ecolawn Top Dresser you will stimulate the microbial activity in the soil which is particularly important for the health of the lawn. Step-by-Step Guide to top Dressing: • Core aerate the lawn, concentrating on
the most heavily trafficked sections. • Apply a 1/2 inch layer of compost, using the Ecolawn Top Dresser. • Smooth the surface using a rake or weighted drag mat to break down soil plugs and backfill holes. • Spread grass seed, lightly rake, and water – making sure all seeds are with covered soil/compost layer to guard against winter damage. • Water as needed, keeping the soil moist until seeds germinate. The Ecolawn Top Dresser is a multi- purpose self-propelled applicator. It’s easy-touse design will help you carry out customized top dressing applications such as restoring your existing lawn or dressing your newly seeded areas. Using the Ecolawn Top Dresser and STA-Certified Field and Turf Enhancer is the first step you can take to create a professional, complete and ecological maintenance program for your lawn. Top dressing corrects several problems at their source and allows for healthy soil and grass. It will help to promote healthy root structure by infusing soil with beneficial microbes and minerals, increasing soil aeration, relieving compaction problems and improving drought resistance. Contact St. Louis Composting for additional information and to rent the Ecolawn Top Dresser today! www.stlcompost.com or 636-861-3344. Stop by our booth at the Healthy Planet Expo, October 20 for more information on how to keep your lawn and garden healthy & sustainable.

ecently my family had the pleasure of dining at the Piper Palm House’s Café Madeleine. The experience was one we will remember and will look forward to having again. Located within the magnificent Tower Grove Park, this gem is a place to enjoy the perfect brunch. The outside plaza at the Piper Palm House, with tables available for dining, overlooks lily ponds and fountains and the inside is adorned with several different palm trees and enormous windows looking out to the incredible views. The setting alone is worth a visit but the brunch available here has to be one of my favorites in St. Louis. Brunch is really an understatement for what is offered at Café Madeleine every Sunday. The array of choices available, catering to every kind of taste or preference are plenty. Once seated at the linen covered tables, we ordered from a variety of drink choices, from fresh squeezed OJ (my five year olds favorite) to something with a little more kick such as a French “75.” This is a delicious option with champagne, gin, simple syrup, & lemon juice. After drink orders are placed, the expansive brunch buffet beckons. Whether you are in the mood for a solely breakfast array, or lunch only or maybe even both, you will not be disappointed. Most of my family happened to be in the breakfast mood but I just had to sample the full brunch experience. Café Madeleine has a complete made to order station with freshly prepared omelets and waffles. This is an absolute must when dining here. The fresh, healthy ingredients available to go in the omelet made my mouth water. The waffles are light, but so filling and also offer a variety of fresh fruits and toppings that are divine. Be sure to try both on your visit! To go along with all of this are fresh potato wedges, sausage (that was a family favorite), egg and spinach casserole, and more. There are literally so many delicious, fresh options for the breakfast lovers, I can only provide an example of all there is to be had. The seasonal salads, entrees, pastas, and desserts available at Café Madeleine are incredible. My favorite salad is the whole grain salad of maize orzo, tri-color cous-cous, and quinoa roasted tomatoes. I also loved the grilled and chilled balsamic vegetables. The flavors in these two salads are rich, yet taste light. There are many entrée and pasta choices available and I happened to like them all, however the one I had to get a little more of was the penne pasta in a sharp cheddar cream sauce. Absolutely amazing! Now when it comes to the desserts and breads, it took quite a bit of restraint to only sample a few. Picking a favorite in this category would be impossible but I do love Cannolis and anything chocolate. Several different varieties of each were available in addition to twenty other choices I just could not attempt to indulge in. There is something for everyone in this department. Do not take my word for it. Make plans to enjoy
brunch at Café Madeleine at the Piper Palm House today. Brunch is available every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information or to make reservations call 314-575-5658. You can also view their web site at http://www.palmhousestl.org/cafe-madeleine or stop in while visiting at Tower Grove Park. The Piper Palm House is located at 4256 Magnolia, St. Louis, MO 63110. You will leave this experience saying, “we have to do this more often!”

Best Foods For Cancer Prevention by Kari Hartel, RD, LD Program Coordinator, Cooking Matters, Operation Food Search
U
nfortunately, we’ve probably all been touched by cancer in some way or another, whether it be from a personal struggle with the disease or knowing a friend, colleague or family member who has suffered from it. While there are many factors involved in cancer development, diet plays a significant role in cancer prevention. Let’s look at the foods that best protect us from cancer.
Cruciferous Vegetables While all fruits, vegetables and whole grains contain a variety of phytochemicals–natural plant compounds that confer beneficial properties–cruciferous vegetables have been shown to house a large amount of these cancerkilling chemicals. Cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprouts, contain glucosinolates, which have been found to inhibit the metabolism of certain carcinogens and increase the production of enzymes responsible for detoxification. Berries Berries pack quite a powerful nutrition punch in such a tiny package. Research continues to prove that these naturally-sweet little fruits house some of the strongest, most potent antioxidants around for preventing cancer. Raspberries, blueberries and cranberries are
particularly strong cancer-fighters. Toss some berries into your morning cereal, make a filling fruit and yogurt parfait, fold them into your pancakes and muffins or simply enjoy a handful as a snack. Fatty Fish Fatty fish provide omega-3 fatty acids, which have been proven to reduce inflammation in the body. Because chronic inflammation has been linked with many forms of cancer, it’s important to include plenty of omega-3 fats in your diet. Be sure to reach the recommended two servings of fatty fish per week by adding wild salmon, albacore tuna, mackerel, trout, herring or sardines to your diet. Tomatoes Tomatoes contain the mighty antioxidant called lycopene. Scientific studies have discovered that lycopene can help prevent cancers of the prostate, lung and stomach. Some studies have also shown than diets rich in lycopene may prevent cancers of the oral cavity, esophagus, colon, rectum, breast and cervix. Your body absorbs the most lycopene when tomatoes are cooked and served with some fat, such as olive oil. A quick lycopene-rich dish: wholegrain pasta with marinara sauce. Citrus Fruits Citrus fruits, such as oranges, tangerines and grapefruit, are abundant in vitamin C – an antioxidant that can help stop the formation of
cancerous compounds. Research has shown that dietary patterns that include plenty of foods rich in vitamin C are correlated with a lower risk of cancers of the colon, stomach, bladder, esophagus, cervix and breast. Nuts & Seeds Diets rich in vitamin E have been linked with a reduced risk of cancers of the colon, stomach, liver and lungs. Foods that are a good source of cancer-fighting vitamin E include sunflower seeds, almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts (technically a legume) and butters made from these nuts. Enjoy a tablespoon of almond butter or peanut butter spread on a slice of toasted whole-grain bread for a delicious, filling, cancer-preventing snack. HAVE YOUR PIE AND LET OTHERS EAT, TOO! Operation Food Search is launching a “PIElot program” Operation PhilanthroPIE, taking orders for home-style pumpkin, apple and pecan pies for Thanksgiving. Pies will be available for purchase online beginning Thursday, October 24 through Thursday, November 14, 2013 at www.OperationFoodSearch.org, and available for pick up on Wednesday, November 27, the day before Thanksgiving at: Operation Food Search headquarters in University City, or at Lewy Nine’s Restaurant at River City Casino in South County. Proceeds from each pie sale will provide a Thanksgiving feast for a local family in need. For more information, visit OperationFoodSearch.org.

Savor The Season of Autumn by Crystal Moore-Stevens
I
n the Midwest, we are fortuitous enough to experience all four of the breathtaking seasons. Autumn is especially beautiful in this region. The vibrant colors of leaves rustling in the trees in the autumn air are striking and inspiring. The autumn offers not only a bountiful harvest, but also an abundance of art materials directly from nature. From the beautiful array of fallen leaves to the dried seed pods that can be found lying beneath trees, natural art materials are abundant this time of year. They can be found in your own back yard, in nearby parks, on forest floors, or on nature trails in your area. Embrace the nostalgic feelings evoked by each of the changing seasons. Recreate positive memories and start new or renew old traditions with the seasonal landmarks; Spring Equinox (March 20th), Summer Solstice (June 21st), Autumn Equinox (September 22nd), Winter Solstice December 21st) The seasons seem to change in the blink of an eye. Happy Autumn! Here are some ideas to savor the season of fall: Create nature mandalas with colorful leaves. It is very rewarding and fulfilling as a solo meditation but can be very fun with a group of friends or family. Nature

mandala walks are also enjoyable. Create them on a day when the air is still or use small stones to weigh down the leaves. Be creative. Create words, patterns, or abstract designs with leaves and pods. Create Window Boxes using reclaimed wood. Make as many dividers as you would like. Fill the window box with things you find on a nature walk that remind you of fall. Designate a “Seasons” Table in your home. Whether it be decorative or educational, collect items found in nature and artistically display them on your table with each changing season. Create seasonal living nature terrariums in fish bowls, large mason jars, or large glass containers. Add soil, moss, plants and rocks or geodes. Spray the terrarium twice per week with water and witness the changes in the tiny ecosystem.
Autumn Stew: 3 large sweet potatoes sliced or cubed 3 large tomatoes sliced and cut in half 4 medium peppers sliced Salt and pepper to taste 1/4 cup hard cider or white wine A pinch of pumpkin pie spice A pinch of ground cloves A pinch of cumin if you wish 1 gallon of water Boil water, cider and seasonings. Add sweet potatoes. Cook for 10 minutes over medium heat. Add remaining ingredients and cook on low for 45 minutes. Sweet Potato Pancakes Peel, boil & mash 3 medium sweet potatoes. Add them to your favorite pancake recipe (decreasing wet ingredients by 1/4th.) They turn out best when cooked in butter on a cast iron griddle.
Roasted Butternut Squash with Lemon Butter Sauce (pictured at left) Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Cut butternut squash in half, lengthwise. Remove seeds (you can save the seeds to plant in your garden next summer). Brush both sides with olive oil. Roast them on a sheet pan for 15-20 minutes on each side. They are done when golden brown and semi soft. Melt one stick of butter in a sauce pan. Squeeze one lemon into the butter. Add a pinch of salt and stir well. Pour the lemon butter over the squash and serve hot. For more information please visit us online at www.lavistacsa.org.

A
s a Catholic priest with the Missionary Oblates, I found myself in the mid 1990’s trying to find ways to blend my love for the Earth (ecology) with my devotion to God (theology). My quest to explore “eco-spirituality” got me invited on a two- year internship at Genesis Farm in northwestern New Jersey. After apprenticing for a year at Genesis Farm’s Ecological Learning Center, I became an intern on their 17 acre “Community Supported Garden.” Founded in 1988, this project was the 6th Community Supported Agriculture farm (CSA) in the nation--currently there are more than 5,000! What a year there in the “Garden”!! As a priest out in the public, I was a professional and was recognized as someone with status. In the garden as an apprentice, I hardly knew a pea from a bean and got chastised more than once by the head gardener. I was a quick learner though and reveled in those long summer days spent amongst the acres and acres of bio-dynamically-grown vegetables and orchards. Doing this kind of sustainable work called upon my ingenuity, creativity and flexibility, not to mention that my strength and endurance was tested in ways I had not previously known. In the midst of these physical and psychological challenges, I came to appreciate in a bodily way the deep and meaningfilled vocation of farmers. I haven’t looked at food the same way since! In 2000, I moved to the Mississippi River bluffs in Godfrey, Illinois, and went on to found the Community Supported Garden at La Vista. This local CSA farm was one of the first of its kind in the St. Louis area. Now in its 11th season, La Vista has grown from the initial 65 shareholder families to more than 130. Farmers Crystal and Eric Stevens are GREAT and have worked to have a St. Louis drop-off on Saturday mornings in Richmond Heights. La Vista is flourishing and I feel very happy and a bit proud! Four years ago I moved on from my religious community and accepted a position with the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Kirkwood as

Yoga For A Healthy Back were never aware of. For example, you may not notice that you tend to let your shoulders creep up towards your ears and hold on to tension in that area. ack pain is one of the most common health complaints and reason for physician visits in the United States. On average, health care spending for those with back pain has been estimated to be around 60% higher than those without back pain. There can be a wide variety of causes including prolonged periods of standing, sitting at a desk, holding small children, repetitive daily movements at work or prolonged stress & anxiety. How can yoga help you with this? Did you know that stretching the hamstring muscles helps decrease stress across the low back? Stretching also increases blood flow, allowing more nutrients to reach muscles and tissues in the back. You probably already knew that yoga can help increase flexibility, but many are unaware of how much it strengthens muscles. Many postures strengthen back and abdomen muscles, which help you maintain proper posture throughout the day, consequently reducing back pain. Yoga poses also results in stretching and strengthening muscles on both sides of the body equally, helping to reverse imbalances that may develop due to repetitive motions such as driving a stick shift all day. So we’ve looked at the more obvious benefits of the physical yoga practice, however there are other components to yoga. When you take a yoga class with a qualified instructor they will encourage you to notice patterns and habits that you
pain. Lastly, yoga and meditation have been shown to help reduce stress and increase feelings of happiness and contentment. When you learn to focus on breathing and relaxing, you can implement this on your own at home. Reduction of stress and anxiety have been shown to help relieve chronic pains of various types. Never underestimate the power of your thoughts and mental state. See you in a yoga class soon! Monica Stoutenborough is owner of PuraVegan Cafe & Yoga. Ask The
HERB LADY
MagnesiuM & calciuM
Cathy Schram Q: Do I need to take magnesium along with my calcium, or can I just take it by itself? A: You always want to take magnesium along with your calcium supplement. Whenever you are deficient in magnesium, the absorption rate and metabolism is greatly diminished, and prevents the proper amount of calcium being directed towards the bones. Magnesium keeps calcium dissolved in the blood. Without a proper balance, about at 2:1 ratio, calcium could end up depositing in your kidneys and possibly create stones or clog your arteries. Also of great importance is to take Vitamin D because it helps with calcium absorption. Q: I know that tea tree oil has many different uses, but can I use it for earaches? A: Tea tree oil is wonderful and very beneficial for a variety of ailments (I will go over a few later). If you are prone to ear infections and/or sinus infections, you may find that tea tree oil can help relieve your symptoms because it is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. However, when applying the oil to the ear, you should always dilute the oil. For example, mix olive oil or mullein oil with the tea tree oil. Undiluted tea tree oil applied directly to the inner ear canal
Tea Tree Oil FOr earaches ? can compromise ear health. You may want to look for a specially prepared ear drop that contains tea tree oil. Here are some other uses for tea tree oil: Add some to your shampoo to help fight dandruff, or a dry, itchy scalp. Acne is an inflammatory condition of the sebaceous glands and can help be controlled with the oil. Add some to a vaporizer to help you breathe. Apply directly to nails in the case of nail fungus. Although you can apply this oil directly to your skin, it is always best to do a patch test first to make sure that you do not have an adverse reaction.

Crossing Back to Health
IRELAND: Land of Shape-shifters and Dreamers by Kimberly V. Schneider, M.Ed., J.D., LPC
W
hen I first visited Ireland several years ago, I felt I’d come home. Some part of me that had been sleeping my whole adult life stirred into consciousness. I’d been studying Celtic Spirituality for nearly twenty years, but experiencing the spray of the wild Atlantic on my face, sensing the voices of the past in the stones of the Burren, rediscovering my own depths in wells and springs, brought the numinous to life. The part of my soul that had been longing to slow down, to be more present, to commune more deeply with the Divine throughout the day, took over. I gave myself to the land of shape-shifters and dreamers. I began writing poetry again. I remembered how to breathe. I cried in wonder and beauty and joy. I danced. I sang. I laughed. I learned how to play the bodhran (the Irish drum). Thank God, the immediacy of the Otherworld followed me home to St. Louis, where I found a new appreciation for the turning seasons, sunrises and sunsets, birdsong, breezes, and the earth beneath my feet. Ireland helped me fall in love again with life. I’ve returned to Ireland every couple of years ever since, and when I go back I bring intimate groups of seekers to meet some of the special people I’ve come to know there, and experience some of the sacred places I love.
Do you want to come with us next summer? It’s magical, truly: the way the sky and the landscape change from moment to moment, mirroring your own inner shifts. Looking out from the cliffs at Dun Aengus and sensing that the Irish Otherworld is floating out there, just beyond your sight. Listening to Irish voices raised in song. Sharing poems and stories of who we are, whether around a peat fire, at the local pub or standing next to a towering cairn in the highlands. Several spiritual adventurers are already registered. We do still have spaces available, and you can read more about it at: www.KimberlySchneider.com/trips. Get a free updated cottage upgrade ($250 value) if you register by October 31. Kimberly Schneider’s work arises out of a belief that every experience offers a gift to us, if we are open to receiving it. Her dynamic mix of storytelling, compassionate awareness and accessible poetry make her an engaging speaker and teacher. A former trial attorney and psychotherapist, Kimberly is the author of Everything You Need Is Right Here: Five Steps to Manifesting Magic and Miracles and the AudioBook Terrible Beauty: Poems and Reflections for Precarious Times. She teaches Communication at Washington University - St. Louis and is a regular contributor to Great Day St. Louis television show. FOREGIVENESS with
Chaplain Paul
y most recent articles have been addressing the question of how do we resolve emotional injuries of the past? How do we let go and remove ourselves from the victim role? How do we stop the guilt, shame, and blame we set in motion by replaying the past over and over? I am reminded of a favorite Bible passage in the Gospel of Mark where Jesus is asked by the Pharisees, “Which is the greatest commandment?” Being a Jew, Jesus knew that according to Jewish law, all Ten Commandments were of equal value. The Pharisees were trying to trick him to pick one so they could accuse him of hearasey. Instead of picking one He says, and I am paraphrasing, the first is to love God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength and the second is to love your neighbor as yourself. WOW! What a message! Love with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. In essence, with your “Whole being”. Not only God should be loved this way but also, love your “Neighbor” and “Yourself”. What a profound concept…….loving yourself with your whole being….Body, Mind and Spirit. So, I ask you, how do we do that? As I work with people in addressing their spiritual wellness I am finding that so often people are weighted down
by self-inflicted injury. One of the most important dynamics that provide our liberation is the dynamic of “FORGIVENESS”. What is it? How does it really work? At a recent monthly support group a member shared with us about a book she has read; Radical Forgiveness, by Colin Tipping. Wow! What an amazing work. I highly recommend it to you. In fact, we are going to be focusing on his work at the support group and I hope you will get the book and come join us. Our October meeting will be focusing on his work about the five stages of radicle forgiveness and the four steps of forgiveness. Dr. Yu and I want to invite you again to our Medical Spiritual Wellness Support Group at Prevention and Healing. The group meets on the third Tuesday of each month from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. The address is: 10908 Schuetz Road St Louis, Mo 63146 Next Meeting Tuesday October 15, 2013 In addition to looking at the work of Collin Tipping and “Radical Forgiveness”, we will be continuing to address the theme of “Emotional Healing”. We will also be looking at the broader issue of “Spiritual Healing” and defining what “Medical Spiritual Wellness” is. This support group is open to people of all faith traditions and ideologies. We welcome and appreciate the diversity and personal experiences that people bring to the group. Many friendships have developed as people share their search for spiritual and emotional healing. Many have learned from each other ideas and skills that have worked for them. Please come and join us for an evening of fellowship, learning and spiritual empowerment. Chaplain Paul Chaplain Paul R. What Causes You To Look Older Than You Are? by Dr. Carrie Jardine
W

e all get older but accelerated aging can occur at any age. For example, one day four years ago, my mirror told me I aged 10 years in the past month. I ate good, exercised, took supplements and lived spiritually and yet those wrinkles and eye circles revealed my organs weren’t working well! I quickly conducted a hormone and stress test – which showed that the mirror was right! I started 3 actions that day to restore my health. Three months later my husband told me I had the youthful glow back and I felt more energetic than I had in years. If you’ve unknowingly paid the price of health and beauty for living, then apply these 3 natural beauty tips to renew what you’ve lost. Nourish. The liver controls the nutrients you absorb. Eating sugar, taking birth control and hormone replacements and overeating weakens your liver which reduces absorption of micronutrients. Wrinkles are a sign of inadequate nourishment. Supplements alone can’t replace eating high quality, raw or low cooked foods. Eating good fats, like avocados, fish oil and coconut oil, slows aging as well.

Get moving. The maturing silhouette often displays less muscle tone and a slower metabolism. Moving more revs up your metabolism and muscle, boosts immunity and helps you heal quicker. Living actively is better than a face lift, as it decreases inflammation which causes accelerated aging. Start moving more and sitting less, get aerobic exercise, stretching and light weight-lifting to help you sleep better, feel happier and reduce the aging hormone, cortisol.
Clean and detoxify. Harmful chemicals in the air, water and products- damage us. We must detoxify and clean harmful toxins to keep our vitality. Aging doesn’t happen on the skin, it happens within us- in our organs. Reduce or stop eating “aging” foods like caffeine, alcohol, soda, trans fats and sugar. Drink more water, soak in “sea salt” baths and do Ion Foot Detox Bath’s regularly to clean your body machine. You’ll restore a youthful beauty and glow as you nourish, get moving and clean harmful chemicals on a regular basis. As a thank-you for your interest in living a naturally beauty life, we will give an Ion Foot Detox Bath (worth $50) to the first 20 people who call us. 636-527-5970. My name is Bonnie Marcin Read My Story
Pain‌ I was really feeling horrible about myself on the inside, but I always acted jolly on the outside. I was out of breath with any exertion, and I was wearing clothes to try to hide my extra poundage. My knees hurt all the time. I was just plain miserable. I told myself I’m the same person no matter how much I weigh, but that little sentence wasn’t working for me anymore.
had a bad case of arthritis until I let go of the weight. I was a carbohydrate addict; I’ve been yo-yo dieting for years. I have tried every diet on Earth. There were only two things I had not yet tried hypnosis or surgery. I hated the way I looked and felt and I didn’t want to buy any more large sizes with an ‘X’ behind it.
The Solution‌ My husband was concerned about my health. I saw an ad in the paper and decided to try hypnosis. I called and Time to make a change... scheduled my free I knew I would be in trouble screening. Then I made if IĂždidn’t do something appointment hyp- šª×å ÂĽ@ n ‘× ÂĽÂ…Ăžabout ÂŞ||nĂ“ĂĄanÂŞ| ‘¼[ªš¼bfor Ă my weight soon. instead of my emotions ruling me and letting me stuff myself way beyond full. The hypnotist has helped me face reality. Holidays, parties and dining out are a fact of life. Now I’m choosing to eat healthy no matter what the occasion, and that really has been the key for me. And this time I have finally gotten rid of all the various sizes in my closet (14 thru 22) for the very first time in my adult life. In the past I kept them around just in case I might need them again. Not anymore! I am a 10/12 and that is where I am staying. It is so much fun to go shopping now and it is so satisfying to be able to wear the latest fashions. I couldn’t claim that for myself at a size 22. No more dressing or feeling frumpy and goodbye to pants with elastic waistbands.
Health Benefits‌ I recently had a health screening with lab work and my results were all within the healthy range. This year I’m celebrating health, my new found self-confidence and the tremendous increase in my energy level. So easy to do‌ I love the program and I feel so much better than I did just one short year ago. With selfhypnosis I feel confident that my natural appetite will be in control instead of my emotions for the long haul. Free Screening‌ I love the results I’ve gotten, and so will you. Just pick up the phone and make an appointment for a free screening. You’ll be glad you took this simple action as your first step to achieving your own personal weight loss and health goals.

“If you are truly serious about quitting smoking, I would highly recommend Dr. Mitchell. I was 40 year, pack a day smoker and when I saw Dr. Mitchell the first time I felt there was hope. I needed to do something, I had been diagnosed with COPD with emphysema. I had tried just about every way possible. Then I met Dr. Mitchell. He saved my life!!! I had 3 short sessions and have been cigarette-free for six months and 7 days! No cravings or withdrawals. It feels so good to be a non-smoker!!! Pattie Taenga-Reinheimer

hen people find out that i am a Hypnotist, they want to know what can be done with Hypnosis. Hypnotism is much more than a party trick or a comedy routine. The National institutes of Health technology assessment panel recognizes hypnosis in the treatment of a variety of disorders and recommends its integration into medical interventions. “Hypnosis has been used for Medical purposes for a very long time. It is routinely taught in over one-third of accredited schools of medicine and in PhD and diploma programs in clinical and counseling psychology.” (Barabasz,2009) According to study abstracts in the International Journal of Clinical and experimental Hypnosis (www.ijceh.com) some of the most common evidencebased uses of hypnosis include: Acute and Chronic pain PTSD Childhood and adolescent problems Childbirth pain and trauma insomnia Depression Weight Control/healthy eating/exercise Psychosomatic disorders Habit Control (Smoking Cessation) irritable bowel syndrome , iBS Headaches and migraines Cancer patient care From Medical Hypnosis Primer Clinical and Research Evidence/ Edited by Arreed Barabasz, 2009 The items in bold are the ones I have had experience with in my practice at Personal Motivation Hypnosis Clinic (www.hypnoprogram.com ) however I specialize in Weight Control/healthy eating/exercise and Habit Control (Smoking Cessation). I teach my clients Self –Hypnosis for most medical issues like
pain, headaches and migraines, and IBS. I focus on Hypnotism because it is a safe, non-invasive and effective technique that can empower clients. In the natural hypnotic state individuals can access their own inner resources to create positive outcomes and solutions for difficult issues, like weight loss and smoking cessation. A short definition of hypnosis is an “attentive perception and concentration, which leads to controlled imagination” (Spiegel, 1998. p.2). Relaxation is often a by-product of hypnosis, but is not required. Hypnosis is also different for different people, because some possess more “hypnotic ability” than others. However, most people in the general population respond to hypnosis, it is just a matter of degree or “depth of trance”. Because I am also a Christian Pastor, some people are initially surprised that I use Hypnotism. I assure such people that this is the most natural and God-given form of medicine. My Church is proud of the fact that I can help both members and the public with health and medical issues using Hypnotism. Many of my Church members have used my pastoral counseling to stop smoking, lose weight, overcome fears and control pain with self-hypnosis. Before I arrived as Pastor, half of my Deacons had stopped smoking using hypnosis offered by a local psychiatrist, so they understand it is a medical procedure that is used by God to improve our lives. I have seen clients since 2003 in Springfield, IL. From 2005-2009 I served on the SIU School of Medicine Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Panel. My new St. louis Personal Motivation Hypnosis Clinic has already had many successful clients since I opened in April. For more information you may email me at hypnosisclinic@sbcglobal.net or call 877-708-5822 to schedule a Free Consultation/Screening to discuss your issue and to test your “hypnotic ability”.

Suffer from Bursitis, Tendonitis, TMJ, Plantar Fasciitis or other soft tissue conditions? New treatments you may want to try! by Dr. Paul Hyland
C
hiropractic is typically associated most closely with back pain, neck pain and headaches. Most of our patients are shocked to find out that we can also effectively treat many other conditions from plantar fasciitis to carpal tunnel syndrome without surgery. How is this possible? With the innovation of new therapies, soft tissue injuries and inflammatory conditions are now easier to treat in less invasive manors. In our office we utilize a combination of Deep Tissue Cold Laser Therapy, Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM), Active muscle release techniques, and massage. Each of these techniques works in their own unique way to enhance the tissues recovery. Deep Tissue Cold Laser Therapy is the use of a therapeutic wavelength of light to stimulate a change at the cellular level to provide pain relief, reduce inflammation, and speed tissue repair. A class 4 laser can penetrate up to 4 inches into the skin making even the deepest of muscle injuries accessible. This kind of therapy is great for sports injuries as well as chronic or acute inflammatory conditions such as plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, bursitis, TMJ or arthritis. Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is therapy that uses special tools to break down scar tissue and muscle adhesions that can cause reduced motion and function that often leads to pain and inflammation. These therapies are great for sports injuries, scar tissue, stubborn trigger points, plantar fasciitis, and frozen shoulder. Manual myofascial release is a hands on
approach to diagnosing and treating adhesions and aberrant motion within a muscle, tendon, or tissue surrounding a nerve. Once an adhesion is found the physician pins the adhesion using their hands and then moves the muscle or tissue under their pressure to release the area. This technique is very effective in treating conditions such as repetitive stress injuries, golfer’s elbow, tennis elbow, IT band syndrome and more. But don’t take our word for it. Here’s what our patients have to say: “I was diagnosed with Bells Palsy. After everything I read and from what my primary told me I thought I would have to suffer through weeks or months before I was back to normal. However, with cold laser therapy, the paralysis and side effects were gone after four treatments in less than two weeks from the onset. I was amazed that I started to see results within a few hours of my first treatment. I would and have recommended this therapy!” Cheryl A. “For many years now, I have suffered with fibromyalgia, protruding disk, and plantar fasciitis. I have tried many treatments over the years with mild results. Dr. Hyland and Dr. Floarke’s complete program using a combination of adjustments, traction, laser and IASTM has given my life back.” Christina S. “I Can Do That” Honoring Your Child’s New Found Independence by Lisa Trout, Admissions Director and Lise Riet-Lague, Director of Advancement Chesterfield Montessori School
“Wow, my child can do THAT?” is a frequently heard exclamation from parents of children enrolled in a Montessori school. The answer is always a resounding, “Yes!”
I
n an authentic Montessori environment, children acquire many new skills that enable them to act with independence, confidence and self-direction. Teachers facilitate this by creating an orderly, harmonious environment with child-sized furniture, scientifically designed Montessori materials and an atmosphere that welcomes mistakes. Dr. Maria Montessori said, “Never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed.” In a Montessori classroom a child is given ample time and space to work at a new task until the task is mastered. Once these new skills are acquired at school, a child is anxious to practice them at home as well. As a parent, it isn’t always easy to see your child struggle while learning something new. Your instinct may be to rush in and help, but if you hold back and let your child do for herself, she will further develop her coordination and concentration and lengthen her attention span. By slowing down and giving your child real life tasks to complete with room to
make mistakes, you are making an investment in her future and sending her the message that you believe she is capable. Here are a few simple ways to support you child’s new-found independence and need for autonomy: • Put a small pitcher of milk or water on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator where it is easy for your child to reach. • Designate a lower kitchen cabinet for dishes your child can use to get his own snack. • Create a clean-up area, stocked with a child-sized broom, a floor brush and dustpan, a sponge and a towel. • Assign simple household tasks, such as setting the table or rinsing dishes. • Allow your child to care for the family pet by giving the animal food and water daily. A young child is very interested in mimicking the work of the adult, and these jobs will help him feel as though he is a contributing member of the family. By honoring your child’s independence at a young age and welcoming his help, you will experience less struggles down the road. So the next time you hear the words “I can do it” from your child, take a deep breath and allow her the extra time that she needs to accomplish her goal. The positive results will reach far into the future. Raintree School in West County Provides Nature-inspired, Experiential Education to Preschoolers, Kindergarteners
A
t a local kindergarten and preschool with large, child-centered classrooms, gardening is part of the curriculum. It’s a place where students learn to grow and harvest food before cooking it in the St. Louis-area’s only school-based green kitchen. After, the children go outside for physical education where they will climb boulders, jump over logs and balance on others. They will perform on stage at an outdoor amphitheatre, and they will play, learn and explore more than 11 acres of private woodland and prairie. This is the new Raintree School, a private kindergarten and preschool, and construction is underway on their new $2.3 million educational facility located in Town & Country. Upon completion, it will comprise 6,800 square feet of learning space with four child-centered classrooms, a large Atelier (art studio) for hands-on science and art exploration, a teaching kitchen, a dining room, an outdoor piazza, a nature-based playground with a large garden, and more than 11 acres of woodland and prairie for exploration and learning. Scheduled to open this winter, the new school, located on Mason Road just north of Manchester, will serve approximately 70 children ages two to six. Brandi Cartwright and Ilya Eydelman started Raintree in Ballwin in 2006. Their Reggio Emiliainspired school offers a unique design and nurturing environment to help the children in our community thrive in ways not available elsewhere. Raintree is one of only a few Reggio Emilia-inspired schools in
the St. Louis area, and when they move to their new, campus, they will become the only Forest School in Missouri. Developed in Northern Italy shortly after World War II by lifelong educator Loris Malaguzzi, the Reggio Emilia approach is based on the principles of respect, responsibility and community. It encourages exploration and discovery in a supportive, enriching environment leveraging the interests of the children through a self-guided curriculum. Forest Schools are a type of outdoor education that introduces young minds to the outdoors to build independence and self-esteem. The setting at the new Raintree location will be even more conducive to exploration and learning, and each classroom, as well as all common areas, has a specific purpose within the learning environment. Every element within the playground will be multi-use and encourages interaction between the children and the wild spaces around them. There will also be a 1,000-square-foot covered outdoor play area and nature trails set amongst green elements that will help to preserve the surrounding woodlands. Cartwright and Eydelman have been in the educational field for more than ten years. Raintree is also a co-founding institution behind the Gateway Children’s Nature Connection, a local coalition devoted to inspiring and educating children through nature. For more information about the school, go to www.undertheraintree.org or call (636) 386-0900.

n 1963, Webster College President, Sister Jacqueline Grennan, served on President Kennedy’s advisory panel on educational research and development. Sister Grennan was a pioneer in developing the best practices in education across the country. In St. Louis, she worked to transform the Webster College Education Department into a leader in teacher training and curriculum research. Part of this vision included the creation of a small laboratory school, which she called The College School. In the spring of 1963, Sister Grennan submitted a proposal to the Webster College Board of Directors to found The College School with these five goals: (1) new curriculum development, (2) new teacher education, (3) professional development for practicing teachers, (4) experimentation with new teaching methods, and (5) psychological research into the learning processes of children. With those goals and a $350,000 Carnegie Foundation Grant, The College School was born. If Sister Grennan could visit The College School in 2013, we know she would be amazed by and proud of our growth over the past 50 years. She would find a thriving and dynamic learning com-
munity that has grown into the strongest experiential education school in the region. It was the passion and commitment that great leaders like Jan Phillips and Peter Wilson brought that led the school to where it is today. They both took risks to create and grow The College School into a successful independent school. In our 50 years of existence, The College School has both impacted and been influenced by hundreds of faculty and staff and thousands of students and parents. One of the most beautiful things about The College School is that it inspires each of us in our own way and that it is an amalgamation of all of our intentions and passions. We are a community of inspired learners, and we are always working to change ourselves and our world for the better. As we celebrate our 50-year anniversary, we know that we remain true to our roots from 1963. And we know that we have grown into an exceptionally strong school in 2013. Schools throughout the country are copying our unique approach and pedagogy of hands-on, experiential, and thematically integrated education. We are proud to be a leader in the field of experiential and child-centered education. We are excited to be charting our course for the next half-century. ou know the type. Mumbling to Fluffy, or others of the 269 cats who, bless their flea-sweet little hides, have their queenly run of the place. I live with one cat, and one dog, and routinely converse with many of my fellow humans, including the one kingly husband who keeps the place sanely running for us all. But I guess my looks deceived the lady behind me in the PetSmart checkout line. “How many cats, dear,â€? she purred, “do you have?â€? as I purchased a cart full of 40-pound bags of that super-natural pine-pellet kitty litter. Madam, I am buying this massive quantity of feline-poo-management material as craft-project stuffing. For a DIY Sustainability activity: making draft-stopping door snakes (or window worms), for the Green Homes & Great Health Festival, an education event for my workplace, I’ll have you know. I am not a cat-hoarder. But I do stockpile some items. I had to lay in a hefty supply of 60- and 75-watt incandescent light bulbs, before they go extinct on the American market. I’d rather not have to import them from China, after they are manufactured there in the first place. Why incandescent bulbs? In my otherwise Ăźber-Green daily lifestyle? I am married, as fondly noted above, to a guy our friends call Mister Mood Lighting. He tastefully illuminates parties, weddings, and theatrical productions - and has plugged all our lamps into those little socket converters where you touch the lamp and it goes on-Bright-BRIGHTER-OFF, saving
23 watts but requiring Thomas Edison’s era of lighting technology. And all our ceiling fans and fixtures are wired to rheostats instead of switches. So until we can afford to totally bypass the un-dimmable compact fluorescents and invest in LED bulbs everywhere, my secret stash will help me function after dark, at least dimly. If societal efficiency hastens that day, some future fellow Lighting Luddite will be ecstatic at our estate sale. And yes, I also collect . . . plastic bags. It started years ago, when I realized the last material dominating our trash can, instead of the recycling bin, was the bags that held apples, potatoes, bread, new underpants, and frozen vegetables. Lured by Etsy examples of clever artisan designs inspired by packaging plastic, I started saving, rinsing (briefly), air-drying, sorting and storing plastic. I have yet to realize my dream of weaving a basket from colorful plastic – in my spare time – but whenever I can rise to that happy occasion, I will have enough bags to supply a whole studio of Green-hearted crafters. And if I live into a post-carbon era, when bags are scarce and in demand, distribution of my cache of gently-used Ziplocs might underwrite philanthropy from the Jean C. Ponzi Foundation. Or help me afford to house some cats. Tune in Mondays, 7-8 p.m. to “Earthworms on FM-88 KDHX and Sundays 1-2 p.m. to “Growing Green St. Louis on the Big 550-KTRS – you’ll hear Jean Ponzi conversing with some of those kindred (men and) women. Publisher’s Note: I wanted to tag this congratulations onto the end of Jean’s column, unbeknownst to her of course. Jean has been awarded the Kay and Leo Drey Environmental stewardship award from the Missouri Coalition for the Environment for her 25+ years of service to environmental education in the St. Louis area. i raise my glass to you Jean! The Creatures of Halloween Night: should we fear them or admire them? by Dr. Doug Pernikoff, DVM
H
alloween is a different sort of celebration today in contrast to its more sinister beginnings in very early Irish/Celtic culture. This period of the year represented a change from sunny, warm and long lighted summer days to the onset of cooler, darker and shorter days of fall. This time was also recognized as the annual witching time. Halloween was seen as the time of the year when those souls passed would return to walk the earth again. But, it was not until the mid to late 1800s, when a large number of Irish folk immigrated to America, that we began to adopt and redefine the celebration of Halloween as something more fun than sinister. It was also a human invention to incorporate certain animals into the celebration of Halloween. Black cats, wolves, bats, owls and large spiders all play a significant role in enriching our present day Halloween. How is it that these particular animals have come forward as representations of this special October 31st event. The incorporation of the black cat, typically with bright, reflective yellow eyes, represents the oldest animal relationship to Halloween. In the far past, witches were thought able to transform themselves into black cats, and thereby, are a likely subject to associate with our modern day Halloween. All these animals mentioned are particularly capable hunters of the night. They all possess special physical or physiological features that allow them to move almost silently in the darkness and furtively stalk with torpedo like efficiency, their poor prey victims. They are all referred to as ‘high end predators’, performing at the very top of their food chains. They use their heightened senses of night vision, hearing and smell to detect and successfully stalk their prey. Owls also have unique feathers lining their wing margins that silence the sounds of their flight, allowing them to attack unsuspecting prey species without detection. Bats are extremely special mammals, being the only mammal species truly able to fly due to the unusual modifications in their hands, with webbing developed in association with extended finger bones, creating a leather like wing structure. I would bet that most people fearful of bats today would make reference to all the great horror films of our childhood, wherein the Dracula monster, representing the walking dead, fed voraciously on the blood of humans, and would make his escape by transforming into a bat. In fact, there are hundreds of bat species in our ecosystems worldwide, yet only one species, the ‘vampire’ bat, will search out mammalian blood meals. Nonetheless, due to their association with nighttime hunting and again, near silent flight, we have come to fear them as something supernatural and representative of evil! And, don’t forget
those wonderful spiders, especially the large tarantula species, with some Central American spiders reaching over 1/2 pound in weight and others with a leg span of over 13 inches. They are represented with black, souless eye clusters and large fangs through which they inject their tissue destroying poison. Actually, it is a very effective method to trap and kill prey. They sit in the shadows of their burrow, awaiting their chance to pounce out and attack. They inject their fangs into the prey animal, introducing the deadly, necrotizing formula of enzymes and after the prey is reduced to a bag of fluids, they use the same fangs as a means to draw up the nutrient, much like using straws on a milkshake. So, in reality, spider fangs can be protective, but their true, first purpose is for acquiring and processing food for ingestion. So, rather than fear these uniquely talented night hunters, one can come to admire them for those very traits that make them successful predators in our present day ecosystems. Take some time and explore more about their biology and natural history and you too will come to appreciate them. Have a fun and safe Halloween night! Watch out for those scary critters of the night!! Vist our booth at the Healthy Planet Expo, Oct. 20 In Webster Groves! Should You Spay Your Dog? by Teresa Garden, DVM
S
paying a female dog is actually the surgical procedure known as a complete ovariohysterectomy. The ovaries, uterine horns, and uterus are surgically removed, rendering the female effectively “sterilized”. She cannot conceive nor bear offspring and will not come into heat. Recent large research studies performed by the University of CaliforniaBerkley and the University of Georgia led scientists to conclude that sterilization not only significantly impacts when companion dogs might die but also as to why. These studies confirmed many health benefits provided by spaying. Spaying was shown to increase life expectancy by 26.8% compared to intact female dogs. Spaying can protect against mammary cancer which is the most common cancer in intact female dogs. Fifty to sixty percent of mammary tumors are cancerous and can metastasize to the lungs. Spaying before 2 1/2 years old was shown to greatly decrease the risk of developing mammary tumors due to limiting the number of heat cycles. Spaying will eliminate the possibility of your pet developing pyometra. Pyometra is a lifethreatening infection of the uterus. It occurs in 23% of intact female dogs. Four percent of these pets will die from pyometra in spite of emergency medical and surgical treatment. These research studies also showed spaying will decrease the risk of perianal fistulas and will eliminate (the very small) risk of uterine, cervical, and ovarian tumors. The data gathered during this research project showed there can be adverse effects on health associated with spaying. These findings may help to challenge the “auto-pilot approach” most veterinarians take toward the issue of spaying. The risk of oteosarcoma (bone cancer) needs to be addressed. Spayed dogs have a 2X risk factor for developing osteosarcoma compared to intact females. The findings showed an inverse relationship between time of exposure to sex hormones and the risk of developing bone cancer. Sex hormones are known to influence maintenance of skeletal structure and mass. The risk of osteosarcoma increased with increased breed size and height. Rottweilers spayed at less than 1 year old were 3X more likely to develop osteosarcoma than intact females. This cancer carries a devastating prognosis. A sensible approach to this issue is to avoid early spaying in medium, large, and giant breeds of dogs. Spaying these dogs after they are completely physically mature will decrease the
risk of osteosarcoma. Spayed females have a 2.2 higher risk of developing hemangiosarcoma-a common type of splenic cancer. Breeds at increased risk include Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Boxer, Boston Terrier, Bulldog, French Bulldog, and Scottish Terrier. Golden Retrievers, Akitas, and Great Danes are at a 3X risk factor of developing hypothyroidism when spayed vs intact females. Spayed female dogs are more likely to be overweight than intact females due to changes in metabolism. The risk factor for obesity is 2X higher in spayed females. This can be offset by feeding a diet reduced in calories. Urinary incontinence is common in spayed female dogs. The incidence is 20% vs only 0.3% in intact females. This condition requires life-long medication to treat. Urinary tract infections are a likely secondary complication of incontinence. Spaying before 5 1/2 months old increases the risk to urinary tract infections, recessed vulva, vaginal dermatitis, and vaginitis. Consider spaying after females have reached puberty to combat these health ailments. Various orthopedic disorders are associated with early spaying. Dogs spayed before puberty have a 2X risk factor for cranial cruciate rupture. Early spaying was associated with a 70% increase in age-adjusted risk for hip dysplasia compared to dogs spayed after 5 1/2 months. Spaying causes a 3X higher risk of patellar luxation vs intact females. Spaying was shown to cause a net loss of bone mass in the spine. The decision when and if to spay your female dog should be made carefully, taking into account age and breed risk factors. This approach emphasizes the importance of treating each pet as an individual case. The data collected from these studies can lead us to believe it is best to spay females only after they become physically mature. Avoiding early spaying in medium, large, and giant breeds of dogs will decrease many of the health-related risk factors discussed above. Health benefits associated with spaying may exceed associated health problems in many cases when a more common sense approach is taken. Dance St. Louis presents New Dance Horizons II on October 4-5. Even if you read this column after the event, the fitness regimens and healthful lives of professional dancers is intriguing. Before the performance, I had the rare chance to interview renowned choreographer and dancer Nejla Yatkin of Leverage Dance Theater, a modern dance collective led by Artistic Director Diana Barrios. Dance and creative movement come together in non-traditional environments for this group to generate social discourse that fuels their artistic work. Yatkin, a Berlin native with Turkish roots, was described by the New York Times as “a magician telling tales, creating worlds with understated movement.” Our Q&A sessions sparked a great dialogue. Nejla grew up in the heart of Berlin, Gemany on the westside of the then-divided city. If you know the film “Wings of Desire” by Wim

ARTful Living St. Louis Area Fine Arts, Crafts & Performing Arts Michelle “Mike” Ochonicky, Arts Editor Wender, you’ve seen her neighborhood. Nejla’s playground was Bermannstrasse and she holds fond memories of the place. In response to my questions about fitness for children, the dancer replied, “Sports were a big part of curriculum at school in Berlin. We also did a lot of hiking trips during the year, learned to swim and dive, did gymnastics, acrobatics. We played volleyball, handball, soccer, plus skiing trips to the Alps in Austria. In Berlin, I only used public transportation and my bike. I rarely used a car. I think that still influences my life style.” When I asked if this affected her direction as a dancer, she responded, “Yes, it did impact me greatly. I was naturally an athletic, very active child, so I became an athletic dancer.” My questions about how she stays in shape received the following response: “I try to walk everywhere I can in Chicago, use public transportation and my bike a lot. I live in a 4th floor penthouse in a building that doesn’t have an elevator. I walk up and down those stairs daily! I do Yoga, Qigong and meditation as well as archery to keep me focused. I also go to a sauna regularly to detox my body.” Any special diet? “I love cooking and eat very

Autumn’s Child - A Musical Smoothie To Fill The Sheldon by Mya Duran
A
utumn has always been a creative season for musician Mark Holland. Having named his musical project, Autumn's Child partly based on this fact . There was also the influence of color and texture that is found in nature contributing to the naming of his group as well. Not just coincidence there is also musical color and texture found in music and it is showcased in the music Holland writes and plays with Autumn's Child. So it is fitting that Autumn's Child should appear in a special concert at the Sheldon Concert Hall on November 19. Also with November being Native American Heritage month it makes this concert even more special with the Native American Flute being featured. Mark Holland is an award winning musician who performs with a variety of Native American Flutes. He began his ensemble in 1995 and has recorded over 15 cds to date. Holland performs throughout the country from intimate house concert settings to larger flute festivals and everything in between. His newest cd, "Circle of Sound" will be debuted in performance November 19 at The Sheldon Concert Hall at 7:30pm with an admission at the door of only $10.00. The overall sound of Autumn's Child has been described as a musical smoothie. Containing elements of world music, jazz, folk and classical all blended together. They will bring their unique sound to the acoustically perfect Sheldon for a CD Release Concert which will feature music from the new recording. What is special about this album is that it is a "covers project". The music on this cd is all other artist's compositions that have received the Autumn's Child take on
some timeless classics. Most of the songs are from the late sixties and seventies by artists such as the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Van Morrision, the Eagles, Bob Dylan, the Moody Blues and more. One selection which was sort of a catalyst for this recording is a song by American Indian jazz saxophonist, Jim Pepper and his piece, "Witchi-Tai-To". A composition that has been covered many times before by other artists. In the midwest the most well known version is by the acoustic folk rock duo, Brewer and Shipley. It is a song that always brings up the question at the end of an Autumn's Child performance, "what cd is that on"? So for the first time the Autumn's Child rendition of this moving song is captured in the studio by Holland and company. Also worthy of note is the inclusion of the classic by the Moody Blues, "Nights In White Satin" which is always a crowd pleaser and highly requested at their concerts. Other songs that will be performed from the new cd are "Kashmir", "Hotel California", a Rolling Stones medley that consists of "As Tears Go By" / "Under My Thumb" / "Paint It Black", "All Along The Watchtower" and "Moondance" among others. According to Mark Holland "the music of the late sixties and seventies were very influential to me musically. This era was a true renaissance of music." So the selections on this recording are from that time frame with one exception being, "Fragile" by Sting. It was released in the eighties but appears on this outing because Autumn's Child have performed it so many times it seemed right to include it in on this work. So how does the Native American Flute find itself interpreting such rock classics and how does one go about making it work? Holland says, "while the Native American Flute Mark Holland
historically was used as a solo instrument mainly for courting purposes played only by males, it has taken on some changes. This includes women playing the flute and the flute being used with other instrumentation that can include various genres of musical styles. In my approach with the flute, I have always borrowed from a traditional playing style but immediately took the flute to contemporary places demonstrating how it can be a most versatile instrument. I incorporate many combinations of ornamentation or embellishments that give this flute it's one of a kind sound. I also heavily use the extended scale which allows for more melodic possibilities. It is my contribution to the advancement and preservation of the Native American Flute". By using this increased vocabulary of notes and techniques Holland is able to make what some see as a limited instrument to a flute which extends boundaries. Holland continues, "the flute is an instrument of

peace and one that can bring all people together. It has a haunting beauty that speaks to the inner soul and captivates the listener and can take them on countless journeys." The music of Autumn's Child is highly accessible and appeals to all ages and all walks of life. Don't miss this experience to journey to another place. Joining Mark Holland in concert will be a line up of some amazing musicians, including: R. Scott Bryan - percussion and vocals; Aaron Burlbaw - guitar; Cory Edwards - piano; Jake Brookman - cello; Marc Torlina - bass. The new cd, "Circle of Sound" will be available at the concert with a meet and greet following. The Sheldon is located at 3648 Washington Blvd. St Louis, MO 63108 (314) 533-9900. www.sheldonconcerthall.com. 11/19/2013 Start time is 7:30pm. Doors will open at 6:45pm. He facilitates this healing using natural techniques ranging from chiropractic adjustment, acupuncture, ener-
gy balancing, and detoxification, to emotional freedom technique, hormone balancing, nutritional counseling, and allergy testing and treatment. Many use these talents to maintain their body’s own healing potential. The office of St. Louis Spine & Health is equipped with the latest in technological advances in natural healing including Foot Bath Detoxification and Spinal Decompression which addresses sciatica and her-
niated, bulging, and/or slipped discs. Also offered within the office are the services of a superb, licensed massage therapist, Sharon Maust, who is qualified in multiple approaches to massage. The BioMat’s quantum energetics allows the body to fight disease and heal with a naturally strong and efficient immune system. It is composed of 17 layers of technology, combining Far Infrared Rays (FIR), negative ions and amethyst crystals. Time spent on the mat relieves pain and joint stiffness, reduces stress and fatigue, boosts the immune system, burns calories and many other healthful benefits. Infrared Rays, nature’s invisible light and most
beneficial light wave, penetrate skin and increase circulation to detoxify the body of harmful toxins. The FIR can increase blood flow and clean the arteries (which means it can help lower blood pressure), release toxins, increase metabolism, heal soft tissue and relax muscles. Negative Ions are Nature’s Energizer. Ion particles cleanse and purify the air we breathe. Amethyst bolsters the production of the hormones
and strengthens the cleansing organs, the circulatory system and blood, the immune system and body metabolism. Be proactive about your health and well being. A good nights sleep on the BioMat or a mere 30 minute nap, can go a long way to ensuring a healthier, happier you. Call The Center for Mind, Body & Spirit to schedule an appointment to try the BioMat. 314.725.6767.

Our approach to holistic health includes the entire body and the oral cavity is no exception. We are dedicated to serving our patients and promoting a level of health care that carefully evaluates and reviews the use of dental materials, dental procedures and also offers dietary and nutritional support for each and every individual that is seen in our office.
Did you know that examining the mouth can reveal the presence of illnesses or unstable conditions in other areas of the body? If you feel like you’ve just about exhausted all your options in your search for better health, have your mouth examined with a different approach in mind. Get motivated, get educated, and get ready to participate in a
health-oriented lifestyle that will provide dental alternatives and a nutritional foundation designed to help support your own body’s healing powers.
The focus of holistic dentistry is to consider the mouth as a part of the whole body. We use materials and methods that are more compatible biologically with the body instead of the traditional dental materials. Examples of non-compatible materials are mercury fillings, non-precious heavy metal crowns, bridges and partials or dentures. Alternatives to fluoride are used
for the prevention of cavities. Proper alignment of the jaws and teeth are the foundation of how the body perceives itself in space. The result of improper alignment can result in symptoms of headache, ears ringing, loss of hearing, pain in the head and neck and clenching or grinding of the teeth. Good nutrition is inseparable for good
health. If your diet consists of food and drink made with white flour, sugar and no fresh fruits and vegetables, your body is likely to be acidic with resultant more medical and dental problems. For your dental evaluation contact our office for an appointment by calling 636-4589090 or email at cherryhillsdds@yahoo.com.

We want to welcome you to the world of PEMF: Pulsed Electromagnetic Field. PEMF is widely used in Europe and other parts of Russia and Asia, where it has been a standard therapy. While this is a new technology in North America, it is really an innovative, emerging technology with extensive research and useage behind it. The MG-PRO is a generator that produces a DC (direct current) pulsed electromagnetic field of varying strengths delivered via insulated cables. No current of any kind comes into contact with the body. The magnetic field energy produced at the cable passes freely through living tissue for the purpose of cellular exercise to promote and support a sense of well being.
Studies of PEMF include astounding results with: Anxiety Disorders Athletic Performance AutoImmune Back Pain Bone/Osteo Burns Cancer Depression Epilepsy
Fibromyalgia Hormones Injury Recovery Intelligence Melatonin Migraine Multiple Sclerosis Neural Regeneration Neurological
