can see so much from our front porch. My wife Niki and I sit outside almost every day the weather permits. I once commented that people in the city tend to sit on their front porches while people in the county mostly sit on their back decks. I wonder why more people don’t sit out front. It is certainly more social. We wave to all the passersby. Neighbors walking their dogs (kindly no watering our gardens) -- joggers (run a mile for me please) -- moms and dads with little ones in strollers (we have our new grandson sitting up here on the porch with us in his bouncy seat) -and people just walking and enjoying the weather, exercise and always tossing us a friendly hello. You just can’t get that on the back deck. In fact, the mosquitoes are much worse in the backyard and the front porch offers a nice gentle breeze and views of the late summer clouds and sunsets. Yesterday I watched as two small white butterflies chased each other in an upward spiral, circling and circling in the most frantic manner. I wondered if one was protecting his territory. And suddenly they landed on a bush and I realized they had been in a vortex of love. I was pretty sure but-
September, 2013 terflies don’t fight. It would go against everything I have ever believed about butterflies. With the absence of rain, the squirrels finally had to get their water from my tomatoes. Oh, well, I don’t mind offering up a few heirlooms if it keeps them from dying of dehydration. I had a bumper crop this year. The squirrel population has actually been down a bit due to neighborhood hawks and owls. Has anyone else seen so many birds of prey in the suburbs? Sure seems like a lot of wildlife have found their way into Webster Groves. Niki said she was sitting on the porch the other morning and suddenly a doe and her fawn came sauntering through our front yard. Now this may be a regular occurrence in Town and Country, but it is rather rare in south Webster. And I don’t see as many Blue Jays as when I was growing up, but there are plenty of bright red Cardinals around the homestead. Our cat Smokey takes care of the voles and mice. He is on his 8th of 9 lives, but he can still hunt being the only outdoor cat of our pride. From our planked plateau we can watch the world go by. An Adirondack chair, a cool beverage, my family at my side, it just doesn’t get better than that. Simple pleasures are blessings of the soul. Make a note that our next Natural Living Expo is set for October 20 in Webster Groves. We have a few exhibit spaces left but we will sell out soon, so if you are interested please call 314-962-7748 or email me at JBL44@aol.com. This will be our 26th expo and each and every event is filled with products and services that can help you live a healthier and greener life! See you there! Get a discount ticket on page 31. ore than 60,000 miles of Missouri streams, wetlands, some lakes, and ponds are threatened. We’ve been waiting. We’ve waited for 40 years while many of our waters have been ruined by urban and agricultural pollutants. We’ve waited 40 years while the frogs, turtles, snails, and fish have disappeared, diminished, and in some crucial cases become severely deformed. We’ve waited 40 years while our fishing and wading streams have become unsafe and unhealthy. For 40 years, more than 150,000 miles of Missouri’s natural waterways have been exempted from the protections that every other state in the nation gives its streams, the very same protections promised in the Clean Water Act of 1973. And now, after a 40 year wait, the Missouri Dept. of Natural Resources is proposing a rule that only covers about half of our exempted waters. In other words, the Dept. hopes that Missourians will be satisfied if 67,868 miles of unclassified streams, as well
Upper Gasconade River - Bowman Creek as wetlands, many lakes and ponds remain unprotected by the scientific water quality standards established by the Clean Water Act. If you are as tired of waiting as we are and refuse to be satisfied with another half measure and another decade of delay, then speak now before Sept. 17th. You’ll find links to everything you need to make your voice heard for Missouri waters at www.moenviron.org.

23rd Pesto Feast Takes Deep Green Look at Monsanto by Don Fitz
Sustainable & Eco-Friendly Topics For Green Lifestyles
DIY SUSTAINABILITY By Allison Macon, USGBC-Missouri Gateway Program Committee

o you fret over the green house gasses released every morning when you drive your car to work? Do you mutter to yourself, “Geez! Why haven’t I set up my composting system yet?” while you grind valuable nutrients down the disposal? Have you experienced anguish while watering your garden with tap water when your new rain barrel sits, uninstalled, in your garage? If you can relate to the emotional roller coaster described above, you might be experiencing the modern phenomena known as “green guilt.” A recent study by Call2Recycle determined American “green guilt” has doubled within the last three years and now afflicts 1/3 of Americans, regardless of age, race or gender. That translates to roughly 104.2 million additional particles of guilt added to the atmosphere by the US alone. These particles are now dispersed within our environment, almost certainly doing terrible damage to the ozone layer. (This hasn’t been scientifically proven yet, but I’m sure studies will begin in Scandinavia soon). Luckily, the U.S. Green Building Council Missouri Gateway Chapter (USGBC-MO
Gateway) is teaming up with St. Louis Earth Day and St. Louis Green to offer a safe and effective treatment for “green guilt.” On Tuesday, September 10th, they will present “Do It Yourself Sustainability” where local presenters will showcase their creative and inspiring DIY projects - sharing ideas for sustainable projects you can do at home to jumpstart your own personal green revolution. Each presenter will keep up the enthusiasm by presenting in the Pecha Kucha style. PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It's a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace. Take control over your battle with “green guilt.” Join us for this free event at the Schlafly Bottleworks at 7260 Southwest Ave St Louis, MO 63143 from 5:30 to 7:30pm on Tuesday, September 10th! Light appetizers provided. To learn more or to RSVP, give us a call at 314-577-0225 or visit www.usgbc-mogateway.org.
Take control over your battle with “green guilt.”
t’s more than food. Decades ago, Monsanto contributed to the contamination of East St. Louis and Sauget, Illinois. And Anniston, Alabama. Its toxic PCBs plagued the workforce and community surrounding Carter Carburetor. There are Agent Orange veterans of the Vietnam War and environmentalists concerned with the effects of pesticides on bees, monarch butterflies and many other species. The 23rd annual Great Green Pesto Feast will feature guests making brief statements on all of these. But the biggie is what we eat. There will be comments on dangers to the world’s food supply, contamination of organic farms, legal attacks on farmers, patents on life, poisoning of soil and water, creation of superweeds, monopolization of seeds, animal abuse and dispossession of farmers in Latin America, Africa and Asia. You can participate in the Pesto Feast discussion at 6:00 pm, Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Brentwood Congregational Church, 2400 South Brentwood Blvd (at Litzsinger/Eulalie). Since 1990, Pesto Feasts of the Gateway Green Alliance have become well known for the wide variety of vegetarian food, including: Great Green Walnut Pesto, Sharp Lemon Pesto, Cinnamon Pesto, Vegan Pesto, No Nut Pesto and Tomato Pesto. Tomato sauce will abound for nonpesto eaters. The Greens are seeking additional vegetarian donations. Tickets to the Pesto Feast are $20 at the door or $15 advance purchase. To make a donation, purchase an advance ticket, or get more information, call 314-727-8554. Also, see the
Greens’ web site: www.gatewaygreens.org. Do you have a concern about Monsanto which does not appear in the list above? Or, would you just like to add your voice to the discussion? There will be an open mike for everyone to participate. Some will cover fun and interesting activities planned for the coming months. Food issues that relate to the Pesto Feast discussion will be featured on September Green Time shows. They include: • September 7, 9, 11: “Do We Really Need Industrial Agriculture to Feed the World?” Stan Cox, of the Land Institute, points out that organic agriculture relies on frequent clearcutting of roots. He believes that the best solution will be developing perennial versions of staple grain crops. • September 14, 16, 18: “Food Fight — What Are We Eating?” Eleeahsah Ben Israel, of the Hebrew Israelites, and Christine Jackson, of Healthy Effective Alternatives to Live, discuss self-destructive eating and drinking habits and changes that people could make. • September 21, 23, 25: “How Does Genetic Engineering Affect Agriculture?” Doug GurianSherman, of the Union of Concerned Scientists, explains why he does not believe that the US has a public research agenda and policy that promotes truly sustainable agricultural systems. Green Time appears in four Missouri areas. See the webpage at greentime.tv. In the St. Louis area it airs at noon on Saturdays and 5:30 pm Wednesdays on Channel 24-1 and at 8 pm on Mondays on Channel 24-2. Watch the shows and come see old friends and make new ones at the Pesto Feast!

Recycling Means Business at the 2013 Missouri Recycling Conference Jobs and the economy are on nearly everyone’s mind these days, but Missouri continues to waste one of the biggest opportunities to stimulate both. Recycling materials that would otherwise be sent to landfills benefits the economy and the environment. This year’s Missouri Recycling Conference is going to knuckle down on policies and procedures that keep our state lagging behind the nation. This year’s conference will launch the new “Strive for 75 campaign seeking to raise the state waste diversion to seventy-five percent. The current state goal of 40% has not changed since 1990, and funding intended to stimulate local recycling programs and the growth of new markets is being diverted to clean up old landfills. Recycling is business! In Missouri, more than 25,000 employees work in direct recycling jobs and that is only the tip of the economic impact. Last year, the state exported $451 million in waste and scrap. Most of this went to China to produce new consumer products. Why not create those products here? Every year, Missouri buries over 4 million tons of recyclable materials in landfills. National studies have shown that every 10,000 tons of waste diverted from landfills creates up to 75 new jobs in materials reuse. That is a potential 30,000 more green jobs. The 2013 Missouri Recycling Conference, scheduled September 16-18 in Jefferson City, will feature success stories from around the country, workshops, tours and events. The line-up includes: Dr. Neil Seldman, Institute of Local Self Reliance in Washington DC, and a national expert on developing recycling economies will be a keynote speaker. Stephanie Barger, US Zero Waste Business Council in San Francisco, will describe how communities are achieving zero landfill waste. Scot Case, Underwriters Laboratory Environmental and a “rock star of sustainable purchasing, leads a workshop for purchasers and procurement officials on the benefits of buying green. Rob Starr, a Missouri plastics recycler will describe how his company grew from 5 employees to more than 70; and Omar Galal will tell how his plastic recycling company creates rain barrels that are sold through the major home building stores across the US. The conference is hosted by the Missouri Recycling Association and the Composting and Organics Association of Missouri. It will be held September 16-18 at the Capitol Plaza in Jefferson City. The Most Anticipated Plant of the Year, We’ve Got It!
Sweet Summer Love
CLEMATIS
Linda Wiggen Kraft • Green & Growing Editor are the protein source birds need to feed their young, not seeds. The best way to get a deeper understanding of the importance of native plants and insects, and what plants to choose for the garden is to read the book Bringing Nature Home by Douglas Tallamy. And what about the fairies? A fairy, or deva (the name given in Indian traditions) is the subtle energy life force that sustains the life of plants and other parts of the garden, from largest to smallest. Most often fairies are depicted as small winged creatures. Fairy gardens are usually thought to be only those with miniature plants and small figurines. But fairy gardens are not only the small ones, they are part of all gardens inhabiting the entire space.
The Wings of a Garden – Birds, Bats, Insects and Fairies by Linda Wiggen Kraft
Perfume your whole yard with over 1,000 deliciously fragrant blossoms. With a mature vine producing over 1,000 cherry-vanilla highly scented, vibrantly colored blossoms 'Sweet Summer Love' Clematis is a bonafide gardening phenomenon. Blooms mid-summer through fall. Like Autumn Blooming Clematis but blooms earlier and longer with flowers that start deep red, then mature to purple-red, then purplish violet to violet. Grows easily in full sun or dappled shade. Grows 10’-15’.
Over 2,000 varieties of plants.

t is those things that fly that bring a special energy and magic to the garden. No garden is soil, sky and plants alone. Yet we often think only in those terms when we think about our garden. A garden is a system of life, a web that sustains and nourishes not only our lives, but the life of the planet. Part of what sustains us is the wonder, joy and pleasure of having the winged creatures as part of our garden. We need to invite more of the flying things into our gardens, and nourish those that are there already. We also need to acknowledge the full spectrum of life’s energies that sustain life in the physical form. How to do this? Create a habitat that is similar to the wild ones that are being lost. Provide food, shelter and water. Native trees, shrubs and flowering perennials attract the most wildlife and provide the most food. Attract the insects first, because they will bring the birds and bats. We need insects to pollinate, keep the other insects that destroy plants in check and be the most nutritious food for birds and bats. Only 1% of insects are the ones that are problems for our gardens, the other 99% are the ones we need. Insects
Fairies are seen and known by some people. My favorite fairy book details the real life experience of a woman who went on to develop “Therapeutic Touch”. That book is The Real World of Fairies, A First Person Account by Dora Van Gelder Kunz. Another book tells the story of a tree grower, who during a near death experience, was lead by the devas of trees to start a global organization to save the genetics of all champion trees. It is titled The Man Who Planted Trees, Lost Groves, Champion Trees, and an Urgent Plan to Save the Planet by science writer Jim Robbins. For most of us, fairies aren’t within our vision. But they can be within our hearts. What can a gardener do to enhance the fairy, and deva, life in the garden? How to nourish these subtle energy winged creatures? Connect through the heart. Just as other people and animals know if they are acknowledged and loved, subtle energy life force responds to thought and feeling. Look at the trees, shrubs, flowers, plants, insects, birds and feel a heart connection. Feel the energy of the seen and unseen garden creatures; the insects, bats, birds, fairies and devas, and let your heart expand to embrace their energy. Honor and thank all parts of the magical and miraculous garden for bringing nourishment to your body, mind and spirit. Linda Wiggen Kraft is a landscape designer who creates gardens that honor the full spectrum of energetic and physical garden life. She is also a mandala artist. HERB LADY Cathy Schram Q: Should I be giving my children fish oil? A: Fish oil is a great supplement to add to your child’s diet. Fish oil has come a long way in the taste department. Not only are there great tasting chewable forms, it also comes as a delicious liquid. You should try some for yourself. Studies have shown that the omega 3’s (fatty acids) in fish oils aid in support of brain and eye development, improves mood, calmness, IQ and the ability to handle stress. Omega 3’s support the neurotransmitters in the brain and nerve cell communication. Fish oil helps provide the nutrients needed that are need in your child’s brain health. Q: There are so many types of enzymes. How do I know which type to take? A: Enzymes are critical as to how we digest our food. They are specialized proteins that help break down different types of food in the digestive tract. Our bodies do produce digestive enzymes, however, as we age, out natural production tends to slow down. Therefore, we need to supplement to aid in the digestive process. Some may think that we get what we need from our foods, but the fact is, that we receive very little enzymatic help from our food anymore, unless we are eating raw, organic fruits and veg-

The Key To Your Well-Being by Dr. Rosa Kincaid, MD
Y
our body’s chemical messengers, hormones, are the key to your well-being. Hormones relay chemical instructions to every cell in your body. As hormones are released into the bloodstream, they control and influence many bodily functions, as well as how you age. As an example, hormones partially determine your body composition. Are you muscular and firm? Would you describe yourself as flabby and out of shape? Hormones also affect your growth and development, physical strength, energy level, sexual function, reproduction, physical performance and various aspects of mood. Hormones are reproduced in our endocrine glands: the pituitary, the adrenals, the pancreas, thyroid, pineal and thymus glands. Additionally, sex hormones are reproduced in the testicles of men and the ovaries of women. Hormones are so powerful that even a small increase or decrease can cause sickness and disease. There are many common diseases of the
endocrine glands which include diabetes, osteoporosis, menopause disorders, growth disorders, and thyroid disorders. Thankfully there is a safer and more effective method than systemic hormone therapy, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is a relatively new yet proven therapy for those presented with common symptoms of aging. Benefits include: • Increased fat burning and weight loss • Improved cognitive functioning • Increased muscle tone and bone thickness • Improved libido and sexual health • Reduced sleep disturbances, including night sweats and insomnia • Increased energy • Reduced depression • Reduced risk of heart disease • Improved skin elasticity for a more youthful look • Reduced risk of osteoporosis • Improved circulation For more information about bio-identical hormone replacement therapy or to schedule a consultation contact our office at 314.531.0008.

The Stone Institute Announces New Professional Reflexology Certification Program
L
ooking to become professionally credentialed in therapeutic reflexology? The Stone Institute LLC is accepting applications for the professional Therapeutic Reflexology Certification Program to begin January, 2014. Thanks to dual enrollment, massage therapists and nurses earn 250 CEs while attending classes for certification. “We created dual enrollment to allow professionals to get the most from their education. Massage therapists seeking to meet the new NCBTMB requirements can earn needed CEs and additional certification,” said Paula Stone, Executive Director. Why reflexology? According to Angela Wells Peterson, RN, “Reflexology performed by a loving, skilled professional is among the most relaxing therapies. It nudges the body toward its own innate healing processes. This one therapy benefits the entire body, mind, and spirit. This is what healing is about.” Why become professionally credentialed? The face of healthcare is changing dramatically in the U.S. This means opportunity -- for those willing to enter this new arena. One harbinger of change is the final report of the White House Commission on Alternative and Complementary Medicine (2002). It “recommends that states require all persons providing CAM services to disclose information regarding their level and scope of training and to make it easily available to consumer.” Graduation and certification from The Stone Institute clearly presents training and professional qualifications to support this recommendation and future developments in integrative healthcare, including reflexology. What makes the program unique? The 350+ hour science-based program focuses on contemporary theories, medically based research, manual techniques, and clinical skills. Each student is challenged to develop critical thinking skills necessary to assist clients with a wide range of health challenges.
Why enroll in The Stone Institute? In a word: Quality. The Stone Institute is certified to operate by the Missouri Department of Higher Education, making it the first reflexology school of its kind in the central U.S. It is also the first reflexology school in the U.S. with curriculum accredited by the American Commission for Accreditation of Reflexology Education and Training. Instructors are credentialed and respected specialists in their fields. Reflexology classes are taught by accredited educator and award-winning reflexologist Paula Stone, author of Therapeutic Reflexology (Pearson Education, 2011). Register now for 2014 classes. Eliminate Root Canals with Stem Cell Regeneration By Michael Rehme, DDS, CCN (Certified Clinical Nutritionist)
W
hat does dentistry and stem cell research have in common? The answer may be more enlightening than you can imagine. Scientists are working diligently to discover the abilities of cell regeneration within the human body. Dentistry is playing an important role in this new age research. Is it possible that the days of the root canal could finally be numbered? Yes. It may even be sooner than you think. A root canal procedure involves cleaning out the infected and dead tissue in the root canal of the tooth, disinfecting the area, and adding an impermeable seal to try to prevent further infection. An estimated 15.1 million root canals are performed in the U.S. annually, according to a 2005-06 survey by the American Dental Association. Elimination of root canals would be a huge paradigm shift in dentistry. As a biological dentist, I welcome this change in the practice of dentistry. My major concern about a root canal is that, although we may eliminate the pain and infection that patients initially experience, we cannot create a sterile environment inside the dentinal tubules. Also, the seal that is carefully placed at the apex of the tooth does not always prevent new infection from occurring. This compromised condition could subsequently spread to surrounding tissue without detection and eventually develop unexplained or mysterious illnesses in other areas of the body. nections to other major organ systems on our website at toothbody.com.) Current research shows that advances made by scientists in treating tooth decay may allow dentists to restore tooth tissue and avoid the dreaded root canal procedure. Several recent studies have demonstrated in animals that procedures involving tooth stem cells appear to regrow the critical, living tooth tissue known as pulp. Treatments that prompt the body to regrow its own tissues and organs are known broadly as regenerative medicine. There is significant interest in figuring out how to implement this knowledge to help the many people with cavities and disease that lead to tooth loss. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the U.S. half of kids have had at least one cavity by the time they are 15 years old and a quarter of adults over the age of 65 have lost all of their teeth. Tooth decay arises when bacteria or infections overwhelm a tooth's natural repair process. If the culprit isn't reduced or eliminated, the damage can continue. If it erodes the hard, outer enamel and penetrates down inside the tooth, the infection eventually can kill the soft pulp tissue inside the tooth, prompting the need for either a root canal or removal of the tooth. Pulp is necessary to detect sensation, including heat, cold, and pressure. It contains the stem cells (undifferentiated cells that turn into specialized ones) that can regenerate tooth tissue. Researchers from South Korea and Japan to the U.S. and United Kingdom have been working on how to stimulate dental stem cells into regenerating pulp. The tooth is considered nature’s “safe” for these valuable stem cells. There is an abundance of stem cells in baby teeth, wisdom teeth, and permanent teeth. The process is still in its early stages, with only a few reports of experiments in humans, however, if successful, it could mean a reduction, or even elimination, of the need for painful root canals. A 2009 nationwide survey by Nova Southeastern University (NSU) revealed that 96% of the dentists polled expected stem cell regeneration to dominate the future of dentistry. Additionally, more than half predicted that the technology would be available within the next decade. What an exciting time to be in dentistry. Stem cell regeneration will certainly reform the practice of dentistry in a positive manner. I believe sooner than later we’ll witness the day when dentists will be moving away from traditional root canal treatments and reduce or eliminate the need for extracting teeth due to extensive dental decay. Beautiful, healthy teeth will finally be the norm instead of the exception. Dr. Michael Rehme, DDS, CCN is one of the few Dentists in the U.S. that are Certified Clinical Nutritionists (CCN). He practices Biological Dentistry that includes mercury free, tooth colored fillings; healthy dental materials; balancing body chemistry; and nutritional therapy. For articles and information about Biological Dentistry and patient success stories visit www.ToothBody.com or call his office 314-997-2550. 40 day fast for Parasite eradication: fasting May save Your life or else by Simon Yu, MD
F
asting can save your life. Or, it can be a sure way of starving to death. At least, you will be imagining starvation and agonizing in hunger pain. Just the idea of fasting will make you hungry. Is there a therapeutic role for a medically supervised fasting? I am not an expert on fasting. I cannot stand the idea of going hungry. I did a five day fast with great difficulty some years ago. I have not tried it again. I had one case of a 40 day fast about 10 years ago. He was a new patient and wanted a medical doctor to supervise his fasting for 40 days. He was doing a Christian fellowship of “group fasting” based on the Bible’s teaching of Jesus’ 40 day fast in the desert. My patient was connected by email and phone for support for his fasting. He did not have any particular medical problems or complaints. His fasting was part of a spiritual journey based on the Bible. His physical exam was normal. He was physically fit with a normal body weight. Acupuncture meridian assessment indicated several meridians were out of balance. Normally, I would try parasite medications to re-balance the meridians. However, because of his unique request, I did not start him on parasite medications. I gave him instruction on how to make a clear vegetable broth to drink for fluids, salts, and minerals. You can get the instruction on the articles page of my website in the article Each New Season Calls for Cleansing and Detoxification. He was instructed to be evaluated with meridian testing on the 20th and 40th days of his fast.
On the 20th day, he said he was feeling fine and wasn’t hungry. He was still physically fit. I noticed his acupuncture meridians were more balanced than before starting his fast. On the 40th day, he was still in good spirit, still physically fit, and only lost about 15 pounds. His acupuncture meridians were all perfectly balanced with no indication to use parasite medications. He broke the fast after the 40th day with a light meal. I saw him a few years later. He was doing fine, his acupuncture meridians were still all balanced, and there was no indication to use parasite medications. Is it possible that a 40 day fast might be a way of eradicating parasites? Parasites might leave the body when there is no food available for them or they may transform into a dormant cyst like cocooning and wait to re-grow when the conditions are right. I have successfully treated many cases of irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, asthma, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, TMJ, nocturnal coughs, etc., with parasite medications. I even wrote a book, Accidental Cure, based on my medical experiences. I just finished reading a book on fasting by Herbert M. Shelton. The title of the book is Fasting Can Save Your Life. His book described a clear difference between a fast and a starvation, how to fast in nine steps, and how to break a fast properly. He had many successful cases from simple colds, multiple sclerosis, asthma, arthritis, peptic ulcer, migraine headache, hay fever, high blood pressure, heart problems, colitis, psoriasis and eczema, prostate hypertrophy and urinary problems, gonorrhea, Parkinson’s, kidney failure, gallstones,
tumors, infertility and of course weight loss. A lot of successful recovery from fasting, as described in the book, reminds me of my descriptions of recovery of many chronically ill patients with parasite medications. I’ve written many articles on parasites, unexplainable medical symptoms, and using parasite medications as the fastest means to re-balance your meridians. Maybe a 40 day fast eradicates parasites and rejuvenates the body and spirit. If so, you may not need expensive herbal or prescribed parasite medications. Fasting may be a simple, yet elegant, way of treating parasites. Why not try this old fashion way as described by the Bible? How many patients do you think will try a 40 day fast, even if it may save your money and your precious life? I do not recommend fasting on your own without some sort of medical supervision. A 40 day fast for parasite eradication is not for everyone. Those of you who are interested in alternative medicine and alternative treatment for parasites, consider attending a three day conference in St. Louis on September 13-15, 2013. Dr. Dietrich Klinghart, MD., Ph.D. is a special featured speaker. Plus 15 outstanding speakers from around the world will present the scientific basis of alternative medicine. During bonus evening sessions for healthcare practitioners, I will teach physicians how to measure the meridians as an investigational tool and how to treat parasites. Spread this valuable information to your friends and medical professionals so they know about this important International Alternative Medical Conference at www.IAMCONF.com. Fasting, or this alternative medical conference,
may save your life. Dr. Simon Yu, M.D. is a Board Certified Internist. He practices Internal Medicine with an emphasis on Alternative Medicine to use the best each has to offer. he Autumn Equinox sends a signal to the backyard gardeners’ cerebral cortex, gently reminding us that the harvest season has arrived and that now is the time to be preserving and putting up food for the winter. Within just a couple of short months, the garden will once again die off for the year, becoming dormant and barren, giving the soil a time to rest. An avid gardener’s greatest bounty occurs at this time of year. The seasoned homesteaders and canners have it down to a science, putting up multiple jars of canned tomatoes, sauces, salsas, fruits, vegetables, jams and jellies. Hats off to those folks. Becoming skilled in this age old hobby requires knowledge of safety measures and temperature regulation to prevent risks of botulism and temperamental pressure canners. I would recommend taking a few classes through your local Extension Office before delving into the art of pressure canning. For beginners, it is best to stick to the basics such as hot water bath canning and freezing. Freezing is an underutilized and excellent way to preserve your garden bounty – and it’s virtually foolproof. Below are 4 simple suggestions: 1. For squash, potatoes, sweet potatoes or eggplant, fully cook or blanch and freeze them in a freezer bag for quick meal additions. For vegetables such as peppers, corn or onions, just chop and freeze them to later add to omelettes, quiches, stir-fries, or other meals. This will make meal preparation more convenient too! 2. With your harvest, cook large batches of soups or stews and freeze in freezer bags to thaw and heat in any amount you desire. 3. Make batches of sauces or salsas and freeze in individual labeled freezer bags. 4. Grill a large quantity of veggies at a time, cut into strips, and freeze in labeled freezer bags to have the taste of summer any time of the year. Herbs are one of those garden glories that often get overlooked during the frenzy of harvest and canning season. Culinary herbs are not only flavorful, but are very nutritious and often highly medicinal. Common herbs and spices contain a plethora of medicinal qualities including antiseptic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties. Fresh herbs of course should be properly identified and researched before being ingested medicinally. There are many contraindications such as during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Consult an herbalist to discover an herbal regimen that suits your needs. In the meantime, start preserving your culinary herbs! Most of the herbs are at their prime right now. Don’t miss the chance to preserve that beautiful fresh herb flavor to use in all of your culinary creations throughout the winter months. here are some simple ways to preserve your herbs: DryinG Either hang bundled herbs upside down with a string
in a dry place, or dry a food dehydrator. When the leaves are crisp and dry, remove from stems and store in labeled glass jars. Be sure to include the date. Once you have multiple dried herbs, you can create custom spice blends. Create a handmade label and give as gifts to friends and family. FreezinG One of the easiest ways to capture an herbs essence is to simply cut fresh herbs with a pair of scissors and freeze them in ice cube trays. Use fresh herbs. Cut the leaves from stems. Fill ice cube trays with water, and then place herbs into each cube space. Freeze overnight. Place frozen herb ice cubes in labeled freezer bags. These work well for adding to soups, stews or sauces. HerBAl VineGArs & OliVe Oils Simply place clean, dry herbs in a jar of either vinegar or extra virgin olive oil. Store in airtight, labeled jars. Hardy herbs such as rosemary and thyme may stay in the jars. Remove leafy herbs such as basil and parsley after 1-2 weeks of steeping. Be sure to include the date on your label. No need to refrigerate. Use within 6 months. PestO Pesto is a simple way to prolong the freshness of herbs. Pesto can be made with any leafy herb. The basic pesto recipe is: 2 cups of fresh herb (leaves only) 1/4 cup of nuts (any nuts will work. you can also use sunflower or pumpkin seeds) 1/4 cup of olive oil. A pinch of salt A tablespoon of lemon juice to preserve freshness Combine all ingredients in a food processor until you reach desired consistency. Pesto can be made from basil, parsley, cilantro, chervil, dill, mint, lemon balm, as well as from lettuce, arugula, kale and chard. Pesto can also be made from wild edible weeds such as lambs quarters and chickweed. Freeze excess pesto in labeled freezer bags or in ice cube trays which can be stored in freezer bags when frozen. HerB Butters Create your favorite herb combinations. Remove herb leaves from stems. (Use stems later in a broth.) Chop herbs finely. Melt a stick of butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Sauté herbs gently and remove from heat. Pour the melted butter in baby food jars. Stir while the jar is cooling. Once the butter has cooled, place in the refrigerator. If you desire whipped butter, simply whip the melted herb butter in a food processor and store in baby food jars in the refrigerator. It’s not too late to join La Vista CSA Farm, just in time for Harvest Season! Prorated shares are still available. An Apple A Day... by Kari Hartel, RD, LD Program Coordinator, Cooking Matters, Operation Food Search
Y
ou’ve heard the old adage, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” but that familiar phrase may ring truer than you’d think. Apples are not only delicious, versatile, affordable and longlasting, they’re also very nutrient dense, providing plenty of beneficial nutrients while being low in calories. Studies have shown that apples can aid in weight loss. Apples are low in calories (about 95 calories in a medium) but contain a lot of pectin, a type of fiber that helps you feel full for longer. Research proves that apples are good for your ticker. People who eat apples have a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease. Apple-eaters also have a lower risk of stroke. Researchers believe that the antioxidants in apples help block the oxidation of LDL cholesterol and prevent inflammation. Apples also contain soluble fiber, which can lower your total cholesterol. Apple consumption may help lower your risk for metabolic syndrome, a collection of symptoms that puts you at a higher risk of diabetes and heart disease. Apples help you exercise? It’s true! Because it’s rich in the antioxidant quercetin, eating an apple before exercising can help you extend your workout because it increases oxygen availability in your lungs, thus increasing your endurance. Try the Northwest Apple Salad recipe below. This recipe is a great side dish, afternoon snack, or light
dessert. It’s a hit amongst both children and adults. This recipe is courtesy of Cooking Matters. Northwest Apple Salad (Serves 4, 1/2 cup per serving) Ingredients 2 medium Granny Smith apples 2 Tablespoons dried fruit, such as raisins, dried cranberries, or dried currants 3 Tablespoons plain low-fat yogurt 1 Tablespoon whole, shelled walnuts Optional Ingredients: 1 Tablespoon honey Directions 1. Rise and remove cores from apples. Do not peel. Cut into 1-inch pieces. Place in medium bowl. 2. Add dried fruit and yogurt to bowl. Mix well. 3. In a small skillet over medium heat, toast nuts until golden brown and fragrant. Watch closely so they do not burn. Remove from pan and let cool. 4. Chop cooled nuts with a knife. Or, put in a plastic bag and crush with a can.

5. Add crushed nuts to bowl. If using, add honey. Toss and serve. Notes: You can use any kind of apple in this recipe, or try a variety of apples together. You can also use any kind of nuts in place of the walnuts. Consider substituting in almonds, pecans or cashews in place of the walnuts. pening on September 20 is the Quilt National 2013 exhibition at St. Louis University Museum of Art on Lindell. This biennial show includes work by artists in 27 states and 7 countries. The 85 works selected for Quilt National 2013 were chosen from 851 submitted works, showcasing the best of the best in a truly beautiful setting. The artistry done with needle and thread in this touring exhibition is impressive—definitely not the kind of quilts Grandma made! Work by two Missouri artists (Luanne Rimel of St. Louis and Pan RuBert of Springfield) are included. The reception runs 6-8 p.m.; the exhibition remains through October 27. For info, call 314-977-2666. September 11 is a date deeply etched into the nation’s history. The day will be remembered in a most special way at Third Annual September 11th Interfaith Commemoration in Music, An Appreciation of Religious Diversity, on September 8. The free program is presented by Art & Faith St. Louis, a collaborative of St. Louis arts and faith, and has drawn standing room only crowds every year. "Through the common language of music, this event brings together the Arts and Faith Communities of St. Louis in their shared search for peace, understanding and respect in order to build a more harmonious St. Louis,” says Carolyn Losos, Chair, Arts & Faith. There will be a Campsite Decorating Contest, Costume Contest, Parade Float Decorating Contest, Collective Arts Project, Kids' Concerts, performances and workshops by St. Louis Music & Science Teachers and more. For tickets or info, visit www.tocofestival.org or call 618-257-TOCO (8626). Wouldn’t it be fun to peak into the personal sketchbooks of DaVinci or Rembrandt or Warhol, to hold those books in your hand? That’s the concept behind The Sketchbook Project, organized by the Art House Co-Op in 2006. The project seeks to “to create a collection of work that represents the current state of artists worldwide,” according to co-founder Steven Peterman. Artists from around the globe are provided with sketchbooks each year, a theme for focus, and asked to fill the books. Completed sketchbooks then go on a continental tour for one year. “It’s like a taco truck or a music concert, but with sketchbooks,” quips Steven. The books land in the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Art Library in New York, currently 27,747 books representing artists from 130 countries. The new 2013 additions to this vast collection were here in St. Louis in August. But, if you missed seeing them in person, 13,992 sketchbooks from previous years are archived in the Digital Library at www.thesketchbookproject.com . “We lost track on how many coffees we drank,” Sara Peterman added. This project might be organized by artists, but they revel in statistics! I’m proud to be one of the Sketchbook artists. ountryside Montessori School is dedicated to the education of the whole child. Our goal is to meet each individual child’s need for intellectual, physical, social and emotional development. Our learning environment is designed to cultivate independence, individual responsibility, freedom of choice, concentration, problem-solving abilities, social interaction, competency in basic skills and a love of learning. By offering a superb Montessori education in a nurturing environment, Countryside strives to help children reach their full potential and become independent, life long learners. The Montessori method of education was created by Dr. Maria Montessori, Italy’s first woman physician. Early in the 20th century, Dr. Montessori developed her educational concepts and tested them at a center in Rome. Dr. Montessori cherished the uniqueness of each child and discovered that children learn best within environments that support individual development. She found that when children are in a home-like setting filled with developmentally appropriate materials, they become independent self-motivated learners. The Primary goal of a Montessori program is to help each child reach his or her full potential. The “whole child” approach taken by Dr. Maria Montessori fosters growth in all areas because the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive needs of a child are seen as inseparable. This approach encourages joy of learning and development of self-esteem. Current Preschool Openings.

Notable features of our school include an emphasis on the natural world, appreciation for many different cultures and heritages, peace education, and earthfriendly practices. All our teachers are Montessori certified. Morning and afternoon sessions are available. Our school is a member of the American Montessori Society. Established in 1975, A Growing Place Montessori School has been successfully offering children the joy of learning through the Montessori method of education for 38 years. Earthworms’ Castings with Jean Ponzi
good-Bye to an old Friend no longer hangin’ around
W
e worked together in the same place for nearly twenty years. Our interactions drew me gratefully out of doors, in every kind of weather, as we conserved energy (mine and the planet’s) in simple, elegant, low-tech calm. Now this quiet, helpful old partner – and its home among the trees – is cut down and gone. Or at least rolled up for a while. I’m eulogizing my backyard clothesline – and the three trees who served as its natural poles. Two-thirds of this tidy trio were big ole’ “weed” trees. Ailanthus altissima, is also called Tree-ofHeaven or stinkweed, for reasons clear when you break a branch. Boxelder, or Acer negundo, is a riverine cousin in the Maple family. Neither of these species is very desirable in the urban landscape, where massive annual seedling crops maintain their weedy reputation. Boxelder is native to Missouri, and an asset along stream banks where it has a stabilizing influence. In cities, its weak wood becomes a hazard easily. Ailanthus is native to China, where its reputation is rather exalted. It was hailed here as a great new choice of fast-growing street tree in the 19th century, until gardeners dealing with not so heavenly colonies of backyard offspring cursed its suckering habits and funky odor. Both of these trees can “reforest” disturbed areas – like city lots. Ailanthus especially quickly crowds out any native neighbors. My clothesline Ailanthus had a big iron hook embedded in its trunk, a natural rope starting point. A head-high crotch in the Boxelder’s trunk and a knobby branch stump on an old Jack Pine, which had died of natural causes a few years back, com-
25 pleted a perfect three-point solar-drying array. All these features were at about the same height, just right to hold a rope. I had to stretch a little bit to reach it. The trees were close enough to hold taut a line pinned full of flapping laundry, and separated far enough for two loads of drying length. With almost no human-made elements, this was perfect Green Infrastructure in our park-like city yard: functional and unobtrusive. It disappeared completely when I simply took the rope down. Now the trees themselves are down, cut and mulched in our effort to curb invasive species. And because the Boxelder had been dropping whopping branches in nearly every windy storm. I’m not fond of paying tree-removal fees, but this was a sensible bit of urban forest maintenance. Removing invasive or problem trees makes room for native species to flourish. I know just what I want to plant back there: Tilia Americana, the American Linden, also called Basswood. I fell in love with Lindens working for a decade in mid-town St. Louis, where they stand, shady sentinels, as an exceptionally lovely and durable choice of street trees. When the Linden flowers in May or June, its tiny tart-scented blossoms explain another common name, the Lime Tree. I’m not really partial to change, especially where my daily habits are concerned. I stewed and fumed about this chainsaw whack to my beloved alternative to the fossil-fuel dryer. But I agreed with the broader plant management decision. We were swapping one Green option for another. Can I refresh my washday happiness with metal poles implanted elsewhere in our landscape? They will not be 100% natural . . . but they could make good homes for some native vines. Join Jean Ponzi for enviro-conversations Monday evenings, 7-8 p.m., on “Earthworms” on FM-88 KDHX, and on Sundays, 1-2 p.m. for “Growing Green St. Louis” on the Big 550 KTRSAM.

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. — Gandhi
Back To School Pet Basics! by Dr. Doug Pernikoff, DVM
S
tudents are racing back to school during August and September each year. Whether you are heading to junior or senior high school; or, onward to college, there are considerations regarding pet management, and more. First of all, note that many times, changes in our home schedules may directly impact our pets. Your time commitments as a family addressing school schedules will influence how you manage your pets at home. It may mean they spend more time in a crate or holding area, and that you have less absolute time to play and interact. Schedule changes might mean less exercise and more weight gain for Fido. Pets get bored and may even become notably distressed with household activity changes. This is particularly noted in cats who do not accept change very easily at all. These issues need to be recognized and hopefully, family members will recognize and address special new needs. A solution is best addressed in your own reorganization of time and commitment to your pets’ emotional and husbandry needs. Be sure to compensate for an absolute loss in pet contact time with improved quality of time together, either walking, playing or just hanging around together. Be alert to possible changes in your pets’ behaviors. If you see alterations in their potty behaviors or with dinner patterns, make a note and respond to them. Don’t be shy about discussing your concerns with your veterinarian. He/she may offer referral to an animal behavioralist in more dramatic cases. Too often your veterinarian hears stories of animals once house trained, suddenly reacting adversely to house schedule changes and suddenly, potty accidents materialize. If you are a student on your journey to college, and completely away from home and from your beloved pet, you might consider taking special last days home in spoiling your pet with love and attention. The loss of contact with our pets is not only a burden to the pet, but certainly, impacts the pet owner as well. I have heard of folks who attempt to skype to their pets while away at college, as well. Students leaving for school often ask about best and most appropriate pets for college. Assuming you explore the rules of your dormitory or apartment, there are many wonderful pet scenarios for college settings. Again, time commitment at school often compromises what you can offer to a pet relationship. Dogs and cats may not prove as best pet choices, unless you are in an
Does Your Pet Suffer From Allergies, Dry Skin, Itchiness and Doggie Odor?
appropriate housing space where roommates may help with husbandry care obligations as well as offering time and attention for your pets, to be shared. Other pet options that may serve well, even in dormitory settings, and if allowed by their house rules, can include reptiles, birds, fishes or laboratory pets. These pets generally fit into small housing units. They generally take much less time on your part as a pet owner, as they do not typically require the same level of ‘hands on’ time. Overall, their husbandry needs, that include caging, bedding, feeding, play objects and even healthcare, may greatly reduce the financial burden to you as a student pet owner. People are often surprised with the degree of engagement one can achieve with these sorts of pet categories. Even an active, creatively designed fish tank can prove a very exciting and engaging pet experience! Again, the options are many, and it is up to the student to fit a best case scenario to your special life needs. In summary, I encourage all pet owners, as families or individuals, to consider the influence of time and schedule changes associated with the onset of the school season, on you and your pet. Those changes can impose both physical and behavioral influences to both sides of the coin. Work out do-able schedules that work for you and your pets. And, be sure to enjoy your school season! Zyto Technology an Energetic Connection by Ava Frick, DVM
U
nfortunately we can’t directly communicate with our pets and ask them how they feel. Even for adults, using words to explain how you feel can be a challenge. Now, there is a way to stop the guessing and open up an entirely new communication channel between your doctor and your pet’s body. ZYTO biocommunication establishes a second perspective that can provide helpful insights and information about your pet’s health and what it needs. The basis of ZYTO technology is this: every cell in the body is networked together, sending and receiving information to coordinate the millions of functions of the body processes every day. When a health challenges happen, these communication pathways direct available resources and restore balance. In a situation where the challenge exceeds the body’s ability to effectively respond, symptoms may appear. Symptoms or clinical signs are the outward expression of the body’s best efforts to deal with big challenges. ZYTO technology enables a computer to communicate with the body. Similar to when you take your vehicle to get repaired and it is hooked to a computer for a functional analysis. The interface between your pet’s body and ZYTO’s computer software is the FDA registered cradle (It looks like a big paw!). The cradle is placed along the pet’s belly, parameters in the software are set, and the scan is completed in just a few minutes. This new technology sends the body an energetic pulse, or signature, called a Virtual Stimulus
Item (VSI). VSIs are representative of physical items including nutritional supplements, drugs, body functions, potential invaders, toxins, and organs. As each VSI is sent, the body’s energetic galvanic response (GSR) is measured and recorded. ZYTO measures complex GSR patterns and determines shifts in the energetic posture. These shifts, either negative or positive, identify what are called “biological preferences” - stimuli that the body responds to most favorably. A body consumes energy in its effort to maintain a healthy balance. When the body uses this energy to deal with life’s extra challenges, like fighting an infection, there is less energy available to perform day-to-day physical activities. ZYTO helps to identify the additional support needed to maintain balance and keep energy levels high. By providing our pet with extra help when it’s needed, we are able to address issues while they are small, leaving more energy for enjoying life. The ZYTO report can be used to help your pet’s doctor decide on a clinical strategy developed specifically for your pet based on body responses, resulting in better health decisions. Tracking scans over time can be beneficial, allowing identification of trends or long term issues that need attention. Keeping track of the past can help to predict the future. Does your pet’s body know what it needs? Maybe you just need to ask! Finding Your Dog
I
f your dog is missing: • Take immediate action and start searching. • Contact local veterinarians, 24-hour clinics, shelters and rescue groups. Go in person to check shelters within the first few days and revisit until you find your dog. • Print flyers and hand them out to area residents. Knock on doors and notify your neighbors. Tell the mail carrier, the UPS driver, utility workers, gas stations attendants, store clerks, animal control officers. • Make large visible posters for high traffic areas. Stand at intersections of sightings with these posters to alert those frequenting the area. Most important: Never chase after or yell at an escaped or lost dog!! Lure her rather than chase her. Missing Pet Partnership.org provides the following tips for successfully locating a missing dog. Dogs are more difficult to recover than lost cats because they travel farther and may be picked up by rescuers who determine their fate. These are the major factors influencing how far lost dogs travel: Temperament of the dog • Gregarious “wiggle butt” dogs are friendly and more inclined to go directly up to the first person who calls them. They will generally be found fairly close to home or will be picked up by someone close to the escape point. They are often "adopted" by individuals who find them. • Aloof dogs are never comfortable with strangers and will avoid human contact until they overcome their fear or become hungry enough. While these dogs can travel a great distance, aloof dogs eventually can be enticed with food and patience. Experienced rescue group volunteers often recover them and their wariness can be misinterpreted as "abused."
• Fearful / Xenophobic dogs are afraid of anything unfamiliar and are more inclined to travel farther and are at higher risk of being hit by cars. It may be necessary to use other dogs or baited humane traps to capture these dogs. Circumstances surrounding the disappearance: A dog that digs out from a yard to explore a scent will tend to travel a short distance before it is found meandering and doubling back as it explores a scent. A dog that bolts in panic due to fireworks or thunder will take off at a blind run and can run for several miles. Weather: A dog that escapes on a beautiful day will travel farther than one that escapes in a snowstorm. Terrain: A dog that escapes in a residential area will not travel as far as a dog that escapes in a rural area. Appearance: Small dogs and friendly breeds are more likely to be picked up quickly by a rescuer. Population Density: When dogs escape into areas with high numbers of people, their chances of being found close to the escape point are increased. How to Resolve Emotional Injuries of The Past Follow Up with
Chaplain Paul
A
t our July Spiritual Wellness Support Group we had a great discussion on how we resolve the injuries of the past. There were many personal experiences and ideas shared. I would like to share some of their ideas with you. All agreed that the first step is that you have to face the issue. So often we avoid and even deny that there is a problem. We want to avoid the pain, the memory, the powerlessness we may feel. So often there are other issues under the surface that we are not identifying or avoiding. We need to allow ourselves to express and define just what the injury is. We have a tendency to get trapped in assigning blame and staying stuck in our anger. The reality is that doesn’t change anything and prevents us from finding acceptance and facing the issue. Accepting life on life’s terms is a challenge. Life is not fair. People do hurtful things and you can’t undo what they have done. You have to have a plan. So much of the
work I do with patients is to help them first face the issues and then develop a plan that works. The next step is to implement the plan. You need a support system. Our monthly support group strives to provide that. You need to become the “Noticer”, the “Witness” of your “self-talk” and how it may be reinforcing negative beliefs that keep inflicting injury. Learning how to replace that with personal affirmation is vital. The ultimate goal is to achieve forgiveness. To release and let go of the past experience that injured you. Dr. Yu and I want to invite you again to our Medical Spiritual Wellness Support Group at Prevention and Healing. The group meets on the third Tuesday of each month from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. The address is 10908 Schuetz Road St Louis, MO 63146. Next Meeting Tuesday September 17, 2013. We will be continuing to address this theme of “Emotional Healing”. We will also be looking at the broader issue of “Spiritual Healing” and defining what “Medical Spiritual Wellness” is. This support group is open to people of all faith traditions and ideologies. We welcome and appreciate the diversity and personal experiences that people bring to the group. Many friendships have developed as people share their search for spiritual and emotional healing. Many have learned from each other ideas and skills that have worked for them. Please come and join us for an evening of fellowship, learning and spiritual empowerment. Chaplain Paul Chaplain Paul R. The BioMat’s quantum energetics allows the body to fight disease and heal with a naturally strong and efficient immune system. It is composed of 17 layers of technology, combining Far Infrared Rays (FIR), negative ions and amethyst crystals. Time spent on the mat relieves pain and joint stiffness, reduces stress and fatigue, boosts the immune system, burns calories and many other healthful benefits. Infrared Rays, nature’s invisible light and most
beneficial light wave, penetrate skin and increase circulation to detoxify the body of harmful toxins. The FIR can increase blood flow and clean the arteries (which means it can help lower blood pressure), release toxins, increase metabolism, heal soft tissue and relax muscles. Negative Ions are Nature’s Energizer. Ion particles cleanse and purify the air we breathe. Amethyst bolsters the production of the hormones
and strengthens the cleansing organs, the circulatory system and blood, the immune system and body metabolism. Be proactive about your health and well being. A good nights sleep on the BioMat or a mere 30 minute nap, can go a long way to ensuring a healthier, happier you. Our approach to holistic health includes the entire body and the oral cavity is no exception. We are dedicated to serving our patients and promoting a level of health care that carefully evaluates and reviews the use of dental materials, dental procedures and also offers dietary and nutritional support for each and every individual that is seen in our office.
Did you know that examining the mouth can reveal the presence of illnesses or unstable conditions in other areas of the body? If you feel like you’ve just about exhausted all your options in your search for better health, have your mouth examined with a different approach in mind. Get motivated, get educated, and get ready to participate in a
health-oriented lifestyle that will provide dental alternatives and a nutritional foundation designed to help support your own body’s healing powers.
The focus of holistic dentistry is to consider the mouth as a part of the whole body. We use materials and methods that are more compatible biologically with the body instead of the traditional dental materials. Examples of non-compatible materials are mercury fillings, non-precious heavy metal crowns, bridges and partials or dentures. Alternatives to fluoride are used
for the prevention of cavities. Proper alignment of the jaws and teeth are the foundation of how the body perceives itself in space. The result of improper alignment can result in symptoms of headache, ears ringing, loss of hearing, pain in the head and neck and clenching or grinding of the teeth. Good nutrition is inseparable for good
health. If your diet consists of food and drink made with white flour, sugar and no fresh fruits and vegetables, your body is likely to be acidic with resultant more medical and dental problems. For your dental evaluation contact our office for an appointment by calling 636-4589090 or email at cherryhillsdds@yahoo.com.

OneSTL Open Houses to Explore Area’s Sustainability Plan
T
he St. Louis area’s sustainability plan is entering a new phase, with a final round of open houses for the public. In September, seven open houses are scheduled throughout the metropolitan area to give residents a chance to review the draft plan and offer input. OneSTL is the culmination of three-years of information gathering, consensus building and planning that were part of a $4.6 million grant funded in 2010 by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban

Development. The Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant Program is intended to better coordinate federal housing, transportation, and environmental spending, policies, and programs so that local communities could become economically vibrant and environmentally sustainable. For St. Louis, the East-West Gateway Council of Governments is the lead agency for the planning process, and it has 10 core regional partners. EastWest Gateway has led the sustainability planning process, which relies on collaboration and is geared to produce incentives and guidelines, and is not intended to impose restrictions, mandates or limitations from a central authority. A
great shift has taken place in our universe recently, one that has been foretold by many of the world’s different philosophies and cultures. It is a shift of “ages” that is responsible for accelerating consciousness, and speeding up the resonant frequency of the earth’s magnetic rotational field, known as the “Schumann wave”. Literature suggests that this shifting is also responsible for the increased phenomenon of earth upheavals, and climate changes. Living in the 21st century exposes us to manmade radiation and synthetic toxins that have invisibly worn down energetic barriers to subspace radiation. We are unable to keep ourselves strong and protected under such bombardment. This manifests as weakness and disease and soon we find ourselves focused on a never ending cycle of survival and easing the pain caused by this modern world. A term called the “Ascension Flu” has been coined to describe the effect our bodies seem to be experiencing as a result of these combined changes. Since we are made up of electromagnetic components, we are affected by and susceptible to the ever changing stresses of the environment. We have brought together the frequencies of nature in a patch form to assist our body/mind “field” to have energetic support for this evolutionary journey. It is a consciousness balancer that can easily connect with source energy. It will assist with mental clarity to clear the subconscious cobwebs and confusion, empowering our feelings of connection with “all that is”. This may facilitate a co-existence in harmony, despite a weakened magnetic field of the earth. Our custom blend of frequencies offers energetic support for the pineal gland, which is the organ responsible for awareness of multi-dimensional experiences. Native shamans have used natural substances to activate this gland in order to achieve greater states of awareness for centuries. We also added adult mental focus and stress reduction frequencies to provide the easing of the modern condition enough to allow the freedom to explore a higher state of consciousness. The patch is made of a vinyl-substrate material with 22.8% carbon elements that holds sub-harmonic frequencies. Through our patented AFG Infusion process these strings of frequencies are programmed into a wearable, therapeutic, hypo allergenic and waterproof patch. It is designed to provide the body/mind “bio-field” with information that is transferred through sympathetic resonance, like a mobile bio software program that blends with your body’s energy (so it is not transdermal). This patch is front loaded with frequencies for peace and calming, nerve stim, relax, and stress-less. Once your system is feeling more peaceful, and your angst around much of your dramas have shifted, then adult mental focus and clarity begin to work. Problem-solving in a more gentle fashion begins to express, and people report feeling surprisingly ‘normal’ once again. It’s amazing how sweet that word can be! Being more prayerful and grateful also may accompany these feelings. We have been working with these patches (over 100 different ones) for more than a decade now with excellent results. Get “Pulsed” For Optimal Health And Well Being
PULSED MAGNETIC CELLULAR EXERCISE With the MG-PRO
We want to welcome you to the world of PEMF: Pulsed Electromagnetic Field. PEMF is widely used in Europe and other parts of Russia and Asia, where it has been a standard therapy. While this is a new technology in North America, it is really an innovative, emerging technology with extensive research and useage behind it. The MG-PRO is a generator that produces a DC (direct current) pulsed electromagnetic field of varying strengths delivered via insulated cables. No current of any kind comes into contact with the body. The magnetic field energy produced at the cable passes freely through living tissue for the purpose of cellular exercise to promote and support a sense of well being.
Studies of PEMF include astounding results with: Anxiety Disorders Athletic Performance AutoImmune Back Pain Bone/Osteo Burns Cancer Depression Epilepsy
Fibromyalgia Hormones Injury Recovery Intelligence Melatonin Migraine Multiple Sclerosis Neural Regeneration Neurological

My name is Bonnie Marcin Read My Story
Pain‌ I was really feeling horrible about myself on the inside, but I always acted jolly on the outside. I was out of breath with any exertion, and I was wearing clothes to try to hide my extra poundage. My knees hurt all the time. I was just plain miserable. I told myself I’m the same person no matter how much I weigh, but that little sentence wasn’t working for me anymore.
had a bad case of arthritis until I let go of the weight. I was a carbohydrate addict; I’ve been yo-yo dieting for years. I have tried every diet on Earth. There were only two things I had not yet tried hypnosis or surgery. I hated the way I looked and felt and I didn’t want to buy any more large sizes with an ‘X’ behind it.
The Solution‌ My husband was concerned about my health. I saw an ad in the paper and decided to try hypnosis. I called and Time to make a change... scheduled my free I knew I would be in trouble screening. instead of my emotions ruling me and letting me stuff myself way beyond full. The hypnotist has helped me face reality. Holidays, parties and dining out are a fact of life. Now I’m choosing to eat healthy no matter what the occasion, and that really has been the key for me. And this time I have finally gotten rid of all the various sizes in my closet (14 thru 22) for the very first time in my adult life. In the past I kept them around just in case I might need them again. Not anymore! I am a 10/12 and that is where I am staying. It is so much fun to go shopping now and it is so satisfying to be able to wear the latest fashions. I couldn’t claim that for myself at a size 22. No more dressing or feeling frumpy and goodbye to pants with elastic waistbands.
Health Benefits‌ I recently had a health screening with lab work and my results were all within the healthy range. This year I’m celebrating health, my new found self-confidence and the tremendous increase in my energy level. So easy to do‌ I love the program and I feel so much better than I did just one short year ago. With selfhypnosis I feel confident that my natural appetite will be in control instead of my emotions for the long haul. Free Screening‌ I love the results I’ve gotten, and so will you. Just pick up the phone and make an appointment for a free screening. You’ll be glad you took this simple action as your first step to achieving your own personal weight loss and health goals.

“If you are truly serious about quitting smoking, I would highly recommend Dr. Mitchell. I was 40 year, pack a day smoker and when I saw Dr. Mitchell the first time I felt there was hope. I needed to do something, I had been diagnosed with COPD with emphysema. I had tried just about every way possible. Then I met Dr. Mitchell. He saved my life!!! I had 3 short sessions and have been cigarette-free for six months and 7 days! No cravings or withdrawals. It feels so good to be a non-smoker!!! Pattie Taenga-Reinheimer
