O
ne of the best things about being 63 years old is the many holiday memories that come to mind this time of year. All the wonderful Thanksgivings at my Uncle Jim’s and Aunt Begie’s home with all the family. The Christmas mornings with my brother Bill and sister Jill. Stringing popcorn and cranberries with my mom while my dad poked the fire to keep the logs aglow. Ringo, our Fox Terrier, sniffing at the packages around the tree, trying to figure out which one housed his savory something. The 30 days from Thanksgiving to Christmas are a snapshot in time documented in our many, many photo ablumns. And then the kids grow up. People pass and things change. Memories are all we have. That’s the hard part of being 63. But time marches on. It’s time to create new memories, new traditions based on past experiences and a few new twists. I am a new grampy and this Christmas my grandson Jackson will be a year and a half old. I just cant bring myself to say 18 months. If that’s how we define age, then I am 756 months old. Let me check the book to see what level of development I should be at. Hmmmm. Looks like I should be losing my hearing, my dexterity, my ability to control my bladder and forgetting where I put the car keys. Well, that’s nonsense. 63 is the new 25. I can still swing a golf club and mow my own grass. I cook and clean and do my own laundry. And even though I do turn the volume up on the tv, I can still find the remote and change my own channels. Thanksgivings aren’t the big spectacle they used to be.

December, 2014 In fact we are going to a movie this year on Thanksgiving and having our big meal on Saturday. With a grandson in the holiday mix, we have two families vying for the little man to put atop the pedestal. At 63 I have learned to be flexible. In life, not really in a yoga sense. But I am doing physical therapy exercises for my chronic arm pain. I am rehabilitating my extensor, flexor and bicep. I think I injured myself trying to capture one of the cats who was trying to sneak into our bedroom or I hurt myself while playing too much Golden Tee. There I go again, off on a 63-year-old’s tangent. We will create a flexible holiday schedule so everyone can enjoy the festivities without the stress. There will be gifts and food and fun and love, plenty of love. And while I am talking about gifts. I want to encourage you to “shop local”. As an independent local business owner, I know how important it is to get and give the support for local businesses, shops and stores. Small business is the backbone of our society and our economy. The old days of the big corporations offering long term employment security is gone. Small business has become the torch bearer of economic recovery. These are your neighbors, your friends, your relatives and the people who will smile and say “Merry Christmas” and mean it! We need to support those local shopkeepers who help make the holidays a time to remember. And pay particular interest to gifts which are handmade, fair trade, natural, healthy, recycled or upcycled. I can promise, your heart will feel warmer when you shop and buy local this holiday season. I want to wish all of you Healthy Planet readers a Healthy and Happy Holidays! We appreciate your readership and ongoing support of our advertisers and the professionals who write the stories we provide each month. Publishing our magazine is truly a labor of love and an ongoing commitment to helping our readers find the resources they need to create healthier and greener lives for themselves, their families and their communities. With your support, the presses will continue to run. In Good Health,

Go Local St. Louis Urges You to Shift Your Shopping! By Terry Winkelmann, Co-Founder, Go Local St. Louis
G
o Local St. Louis, the new independent business alliance, urges you to shift your shopping this holiday season and think local first! The group, which formed in September and already has nearly 100 members, promotes the idea of keeping your income circulating in your community by shifting your shopping to locally owned stores. By keeping your money where your house is—patronizing businesses that are owned by St. Louisans rather than out-oftown investors—more of your purchase dollars stay in the community. And that’s important. As shoppers, Americans collectively spend a large portion of our annual shopping budget between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31. When that shopping is done at locally owned, independent businesses, we generate 2 to 3 times as much economic activity in our towns and neighborhoods than if we had spent the same amount at a national chain. Besides, when it comes to holiday shopping, a morning spent wandering boutiques in a place like Old Webster or Maplewood followed by lunch at a locally owned café is way more fun and festive than navigating the parking lot at the outlet mall. And there’s no need to stop at shopping--hire a locally owned service company to cater your party. Have a microbrew with dinner at a locally owned, independent restaurant rather than one that sends its profits to investors in another state or country. Studies show that locally-owned independent retailers
return three times or more money into their communities than chain competitors while locally-owned independent restaurants return twice as much per dollar of revenue to the local economy than chain restaurants. And buying remotely, via the internet or mail-order catalogs, creates almost no local benefit--just a few minutes work for a delivery person. Increasingly these days, local retailers strive to stock more locally made products among their diverse offerings, chosen with their region, their market and their customers in mind—not the generic U.S. market. The work of St. Louis photographers, potters, jewelry makers, seamstresses, knitters, weavers, and other artists can be found in local boutiques long after the craft show ends. Artisanal foods, like honey from local bees, chocolates individually handcrafted by someone you run into at the neighborhood grocery, pastries baked nearby or a selection of indie teas and coffees are guaranteed to bring a smile to your recipient. In this season of doing good and sharing, take a minute to consider the impact of your spending. You earned it. You’re going to spend it. Keeping it local will extend the value of your gifts, to your church, school and neighbor. Besides, nothing says “I love you” like a massproduced, run-of-the-mill, disposable item sold by a company benefitting from corporate welfare, paying minimal wages to employees kept from enjoying Thanksgiving with their families. Natural liviNg gift & Holiday guide Gingerbread ForThe Holidays By Crystal Stevens
T
his time of year reminds us of the warming tastes and sweet aromas of cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. The anticipation of the first snow and the excitement that fills our house each year around the holidays is such a pleasant feeling. While the little gingerbread men and gingerbread houses are equally fun and nostalgic to make and sweet to taste, we crave a more decadent treat loved by most adults…fresh gingerbread. Nothing satisfies my husband and I more than moist delicious gingerbread made from scratch. The etymology behind gingerbread is fascinating. Gingerbread originally was a loose definition used to describe preserved ginger. The earliest record of gingerbread dates back to 2400 BC and is said to originate in Greece. There are recipes for gingerbread that have originated from all around the world and each culture has its own lore about gingerbreads origin. One story mentions an Armenian monk bringing gingerbread to Europe in 992 AD. However, ginger root itself originates from China and has been cultivated for centuries for its medicinal properties. Ginger root is actually the rhizome of Zingiber officinale, a subtropical plant that produces white and pink buds. The blossoms are yellow. Ginger root is a miracle worker and is said to contain anti-cancerous, anti-inflammatory, and anti-biotic properties and has been used to treat a number of ailments including upset stomach, nausea, menstrual cramps and so on. Ginger is known for being a friend to the digestive system. With holiday meals on the horizon, ginger may be a friend we all could use. The notorious components for giving gingerbread its sweet spicy flavor and its dark appearance are ginger and molasses. Please the adults in your family this holiday season with a more sophisticated and hearty winter dessert. Day old gingerbread is delicious served warm with a dollop of ice cream or made into a bread pudding.
Mini loaves of gingerbread make excellent holiday gifts. Urban Buds Farm grows fresh ginger right here in St. Louis. HealtHy Homemade GinGerbread 1 cup gluten-free flour mix or organic whole wheat pastry flour 1 tsp baking soda 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 cup of coconut sugar 1 tbsp fresh grated ginger 2 tsp powdered ginger 2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp nutmeg 1 tsp allspice 2/3 cup almond milk 1/4 cup blackstrap molasses 1/4 cup pure maple syrup 1/3 cup apple sauce 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar 2 tbsp melted coconut oil 3 tbsp ground flax meal Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease an 8”x 8” pan with a thin layer of coconut oil. In a large mixing bowl, combine milk, molasses, maple syrup, apple sauce, apple cider vinegar, melted coconut oil, fresh ginger and flax meal and whisk ingredients together until thoroughly mixed. Let mixture sit for about 10 minutes. Stir together remaining ingredients in a separate large mixing bowl. Fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients just until combined, careful not to over mix. Pour the mixture into the greased pan and bake for about 20-25 minutes. Use a toothpick to be sure the cake is thoroughly cooked. Let cool. Glaze with honey or frost with a maple cream cheese frosting. Simply mix 1 8oz package of cream cheese with 1/2 cup of maple syrup with an electric mixer for one minute. Creating Christmas Ornaments And Memories To Treasure In Ferguson
The Healthy Planet magazine • TheHealthyPlanet.com
ARTful Living St. Louis Area Fine Arts, Crafts & Performing Arts Michelle “Mike” Ochonicky, Arts Editor
I
t was an ordinary day in late September when I received an email…from an assistant in the Missouri Governor’s Office, asking me to design Missouri’s ornaments for the National Christmas Tree display in Washington, D.C. this holiday season. It’s the fourth time I’ve been asked to take on this project---an honor of incredible proportions—unexpected, to be sure. As “the” artist, I would design and make an original ornament, and then work with a school, also selected by Governor Nixon, with the students replicating my design on many more ornaments (It’s a big tree to decorate!). The school had not yet been determined, I was told. In past years, I’ve worked with schools as far away as Joplin, so I had no idea where I’d be heading for this year’s project. A few weeks later, I was notified that the school had been selected, based on a directive from the White House: McCluer SouthBerkeley High School, in Ferguson. I pondered the design for a long time. It needed to incorporate symbols of the holiday season in our state, as well as some reference to a National Park Foundation site in our state, since NPF hosts the National Christmas Tree display in President’s Park (the “backyard” of the White House). I wanted the piece to be
Ornament Artist, Michelle “Mike” Ochonicky, works with students at McCluer South - Berkeley High School in Ferguson, on numerous ornaments for the National Christmas Tree display in Washington, D.C. meaningful. After throwing a lot of sketches in the recycle bin, I finally completed my design work, made the original piece and organized plans to go to the school. It might be natural to select only the best art students to work on a project of this level but I designed the work in multiple stages to give many, many students a hand in the project. I think it’s important that as many students as possible get to work on the pieces, especially those who may never again have such an opportunity. Imagine, if you will, to always be
able to say, “Once I worked on a project that was displayed in Washington, D.C. where thousands and thousands of people saw it.” So, 136 students in McCluer South art classes worked with me to make a lot of ornaments… The students at McCluer South were awesome. They were so enthused and eager to work on this project, and their work was beautifully done. The faculty and staff were great to work with as well (not many schools would welcome a day’s disruption to regular classes!). The project was completed without a
13 hitch. It was a delightful, fun day for us all, full of paint and glitter and glue and smiles. As we worked, it was clear that we all shared the same goals for that day: we all knew we were working on something special and we all wanted it be just right. Missouri will be well-represented in Washington as a result of these students’ efforts. I don’t presume to have any answers to any of the issues that face us these days. Nor do I think that solutions to problems are simple. As this goes to press, many serious concerns face our region. But I do see that there are some things that can bring us together, on common ground. We can all appreciate a fine work of art, a beautiful piece of music. These things inspire us and move us, no matter who we are, or where we are from, or even what holiday we celebrate. The effort to do our best, the effort to work together, the effort to do something beautiful and lasting---these things matter, and touch each of us.
So, in this holiday season, seek out something beautiful. Share it with someone. Make a valuable memory to treasure. That’s what I did this year. The holiday season in St. Louis offers a calendar-full of ARTful things to see and do. Our online ARTful Happenings calendar can be found at www.TheHealthyPlanet.com. It offers an easy-to-access listing of everything going on in St. Louis this month. Take the kids; take the visiting relatives or friends; take a date or spouse, or just yourself to any of the wonderful exhibitions and events to make this holiday season a very special ARTful season!

Ffresh R E S H fare FARE EntErtaining With tEa Pairing Tea With Food By Kateri Meyer Owner of Traveling Tea
D
id you know tea is like wine, in that its flavor profile is developed by its terroir, or the environment in which it grows? For example, Assam tea is a hearty and malty tea native to the Assam region of northern India. When I sampled the result of this same cultivar grown in Hawaii’s volcanic soil I found it to be mellow, with honey notes. Quite a surprise! Also like wine, pairing quality tea with food can enhance the experience and enjoyment of both. A guideline for choosing which teas to serve, is to consider the country of origin and foods and flavors native to that region. Japanese teas will pair with seafoods, chicken, rice and other foods that have umami qualities (pleasant savory taste). Black teas from Yunnan, with varying degrees of smokiness, pair with roasted beef, pork, or lamb; as well as sweet or spiced desserts and baked goods, especially those with fruit components (apples and peaches originated in China and central Asia). If you normally pair wine with your food courses, consider offering tea as a wine/beer/cocktail (or even coffee) alternative to your guests. It is very affordable in this setting. Guests who do not consume alcohol or soda may appreciate being treated with a beverage of comparable class. Tea drinkers, especially, will appreciate having quality options comparable to wines and
coffees and liqueurs during, and after, dinner. There are many caffeine free dessert type tea options as well. Think outside the teacup! There are no “rules” that say how you must serve tea. Oolongs, Darjeelings, various green teas would all be lovely served in a wine glass at room temperature. Lung Ching Dragonwell: Mixed nuts, chestnuts; rich or aged cheeses such as Brie or Gruyere; light vegetable dishes; fish; fruit. Oolongs can tame the fire of hot, spicy dishes. Heartier, smoky oolongs such as Wuyi are ideal with pork or spiced chicken, or fruity, earthy desserts, spiced tea breads, stone fruits. Lighter style oolongs (more similar to green tea) pair beautifully with lightly spicy or curried foods, smoked foods, shellfish, buttery desserts, and fresh fruit. Assam: Often the base of breakfast blends. Pair with sausages, buttery pastries. Also with dark chocolate, sharp cheeses, mushrooms, smoked fish and meats, eggs, spiced desserts or anything with cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar or caramel. Mexican food and chilies. When planning menus, feel free to discuss your tea/food pairing options, ways to simplify tea prep, and make an appointment to sample teas at our shop. Tell us you saw us in the Healthy Planet magazine and you receive a “Tea Surprise” with your purchase" when you stop by the store at 2707 Sutton in Maplewood. www.traveling-tea.com. 314-647-8832.

There’s No Magic Bullet for Health by Monica Stoutenborough
H
ow often do you read about a new supplement or diet plan that is the easy and quick way to find the good health you are searching for? We’ve been led to believe that each and every ailment has a magical fix that does not require any effort on your part and that you can continue with your current lifestyle. Whether it’s pills, vitamins, supplements or rituals there is no single thing you can add to a less than healthy lifestyle that will transform you into your healthiest self. For example, many of us know that calcium intake is important for strong bones, however that is only part of the equation. To ensure strong bones we have to also maintain sufficient Vitamin D levels, eat enough foods with magnesium, be physically active and minimize calcium loss that can result from smoking, heavy drinking, excessive caffeine intake and poor diet. Vitamins certainly can provide benefit in many situations, however whole foods provide the best natural source of vitamins compared to many synthetic vitamin supplements. Consider Vitamin A as a great example. Taking synthetic Vitamin A supplements can be toxic in excessive doses. Instead if you eat foods that are rich in beta-carotene such as kale, sweet potatoes or oranges, your body efficiently converts the carotenoids into Vitamin A, which is more natural. You also eliminate the risk of
Vitamin A toxicity as your body will not make more than is needed from foods. In this case you will also benefit from all the other minerals, vitamins, fiber and nutrients found in the plant food. To enjoy good health you have to invest time and effort into changing your lifestyle. What if I told you that the same diet and lifestyle that is known for preventing cancer risk also reduces the incidence of high blood pressure, heart disease, type II diabetes, headaches, depression, osteoporosis, dementia and more? It is true. For most of us, the benefit obtained from eating a diet rich in nutrients while also becoming active is the most direct and long lasting way to enjoy a long and healthy life. All of our systems work together synergistically and when given the nutrients needed for cellular repair and health we can even reverse many chronic diseases. Eat foods as close to their natural state as possible and enjoy a wide variety of them. Learning to laugh, relax, exercise, and meditate are some of the most powerful behaviors when combined with great food for a long and healthy life. Monica Stoutenborough Owner, Chef & Instructor at PuraVegan. Monica will be offering a Group Health Coaching Support Program that takes place over 16 weeks, helping individuals with the tools to make lasting life changes. Maplewood: The Nation’s First Green Dining District By Rachelle L’Ecuyer
O
ne of the pleasures of dining in historic downtown Maplewood is the prevalence of “farm to table” practices embraced by many of its food purveyors putting good food on the table for you. However, that isn’t how a business becomes a St. Louis Earth Day’s Green Dining Alliance (GDA) member. (www.greendiningalliance.org) GDA member practices include banning indoor smoking, not using Styrofoam products; participating in Single Stream Recycling; phasing in CFLs and/or LEDs; and setting waste reduction goals. Maplewood became the nation’s first Green Dining District when 25% of the businesses joined the GDA. The area stood out as a natural model for a district with a high walkability score and concentration of independent businesses in the 7200 and 7300 blocks of Manchester and the 2700 block of Sutton. Let’s take a quick tour of the district starting with Schlafly Bottleworks, a longtime supporter of St. Louis Earth Day’s GDA. The Schlafly Bottleworks is a beehive of activity that includes the Schlafly Farmers Market. Of course, there’s lunch, dinner and beer. water Street Café is known for its delicious food and specialty cocktails. The establishment is family owned and operated. The bakery partners with many local businesses and you will find delicious combinations of ingredients baked into their products. A True Believer In Climate Change
N
UNAVUT, CANADA – Work just finished on the first LEED certified structure in the North Pole and not a day too early. Business as usual in the North Pole was interrupted early this morning when the northwest corner of Santa’s workshop sunk 6 feet below the building’s foundation. Eighteen elves were pulled to safety. There were no reports of major injuries. Ingfred, Santa’s public relations manager, reported that few toys could be salvaged from the devastation before a fresh layer of snow covered the scene and estimated financial losses at $240,000. “These costs are just the tip of the iceberg,” said Ingfred. The chief engineer, Roscoe, reported the cause of the slumping event as melting permafrost. “Climate change is impacting our operation quicker than anticipated,” he said. Santa’s underground systems, including water and septic lines are also at risk. In addition to the sinking and slumping, researchers at Woods Hole Research Center report that thawing permafrost

hings happen which make environmentalists keep their eyes open. December 2014 episodes of Green Time TV look at antibiotic resistance which can be traced to factory farming, social and environmental problems with cannabis prohibition, social environments of black children, and promises to reduce carbon emissions. Nearly 80% of antibiotics sold in the United States are used on factory farms rather than for human medicine. At the same time, two million Americans get an antibiotic resistant infection annually, and in 2013, 23,000 of those infected died. The first December Green Time show features Alyssa Hartman, of Food and Water Watch, discussing the FDA’s being aware of problems associated with antibiotic resistant bacteria but continually failing to act. What sort of resources does the state of Missouri expend to enforce the prohibition of cannabis? During the second December show, John Payne, of Show-Me Cannabis, discusses effects of an arrest and conviction for a cannabis offense for the individual and society. They look at how decriminalization laws (such those in Columbia and St. Louis) have helped address these problems. If decriminalization for some users helps, should we advocate full legalization? The third December Green Time is an episode of Harambee 101. It examines the necessity of caring environments for black children. Host Xavier Silva is a youth member of the Junior Black Chamber of Commerce (JBCC). He interviews Darryl L. Wise, CEO, Annie Malone Children & Family Service. They discuss foster care, children’s homes and the many services that Annie Malone continues to provide to children and youth in the St. Louis area. For the final December show, Adolphus Pruitt and Sam Cummings discuss the NAACP’s new report “Just Energy Policies: Reducing Pollution & Creating Jobs?” Reducing air pollution is critical because
releases carbon dioxide and methane into the air, exacerbating the warming that causes the permafrost thaw in the first place. Fortunately, elves completed work on a renovated workshop earlier this week with a LEED Platinum certification. The new workshop has energy efficient windows, meaning no more iconic, frosty window panes, but also a draft-free workplace. The woodburning fireplaces have been replaced with a radiant floor heating system powered by the new solar array behind the reindeer shed. State of the art solar panel heaters will melt accumulating snow. C.H.E.E.R., or Coalition of Happy, Energetic Elves and Reindeer, report a 9% increase in employment at the North Pole this year due to energy improvements. “Our workers have been spared from countless hours wearing silly shoes in overcrowded malls this season by finding work retrofitting the North Pole. We have created jobs in manufacturing, construction, and efficiency,” according to a statement from C.H.E.E.R. Reduced air emissions are predicted to decrease respiratory illnesses, strokes, and heart disease. Life expectancy of elves is expected to increase from 9,720 years to 10,420. In related news, Santa has updated the naughty and nice list. In addition to pulling your sister’s hair and insider trading, Santa has added using incandescent bulbs, fracking, and driving a gas guzzler to the naughty list, all of which, Santa says, threaten his North Pole operation. Whether the guilty receive a hard lump of coal or something more sustainable remains to be seen. Visit www.moenviron.org to learn more. Follow us on Twitter: @MoEnviron childhood asthma is epidemic in the African American community. This could be due to 68% of African Americans’ living within 30 miles of a coal-fired power plant. About Missouri Environmental Fund Raising Funds for Environmental Work
36 Environmental Organizations working in Missouri – in One Package! By Laura Neuman-Howe, Deputy Director, Missouri Environmental Fund
T
he organization “Missouri Environmental Fund” was established in 1993 as a workplace giving campaign for environmental organizations. The organization has been operating as “Earth Share of Missouri” for the past 12 years, but recently re-organized and is now back to its roots and called “Missouri Environmental Fund” again. The organization a federation, somewhat like a co-op, that represents 36 non-profit environmental organizations working on the ground in Missouri. Missouri Environmental Fund organizations work on wide range of programs: clean air, clean water, protecting Missouri prairies and forests. Parks, trails, recycling, conservation, preservation of plants, wild animals, natural habitat, and environmental education are all accomplishments of Missouri Environmental Fund organizations. The Sierra Club, Missouri Botanical Garden, Audubon, Ozark Regional Land Trust and many more are included. Please visit www.moenv.org for a complete list and details
about each organization. The Fund’s mission is fundraising via workplace-giving campaigns on behalf of these organizations. A great secondary accomplishment is awareness building of important environmental work. The federation enables employees to make a single donation that benefits a variety of environmental causes. Missouri Environmental Fund and all of its affiliated organizations are 501(c)3 organizations, so contributions are tax-deductible as defined by the IRS. Contributions may be shared with all of the organizations, or donors may direct that their gift go to their favorite environmental organization(s). Currently Missouri Environmental Fund is offered in many workplaces, including federal employees’ Combined Federal Campaign, Missouri State employees, a number of municipal and county governments, HOK Architects, Bass Pro Shops, and others. Missouri Environmental Fund volunteers would be happy to talk to you about how to start up a campaign to benefit the environment in your workplace. Gardening Blogs... by Linda Wiggen Kraft
I
nspiration and information are two things gardeners can find online through blogs. Inspiration and information are both magical and practical. The best blogs are a combination of the two. Blogs from different kinds of gardeners, florists, and crafts people come to my email inbox to fill my head and heart with new garden dreams and a need for things to make my gardening chores easier. I subscribe to the ones below (except one). I get an email notice and link when a new blog post is online. I have subscribed to some garden blogs for years. Others are new and await the time test to see how long they keep my interest. I am drawn to blogs that are mainly photos and few words. As much as words inspire, I am primarily a visual person. Photos are also time savers in getting the message of the blog across. As the saying goes, those pictures are worth many words. The blog that has me swooning over its photography and stories is from a Brooklyn NY floral design shop called Saipua (saipua.blogspot.com). The floral designs and photos remind me of old Dutch paintings of fantastical exuberant bouquets. The on-going story of buying a farm to grow even more
flowers than what are available at the NYC flower market lets me in on the dream all flower lovers have, of owning a flower farm. I’m not sure how to subscribe to this blog, so I have to go to their site often to see what they are up to.
On the practical side along with inspiration is A Way to Garden, Organic Gardening and Landscaping (awaytogarden.com). Margaret Roach was an editor and garden writer at Martha Stewart Living for years. She moved to the country to grow her large garden. There is lots of info about gardening here, both inspiring and helpful. It was through her blog that I found out about Water Right garden hoses. I am replacing all my heavy, hard-tohandle, toxic to drink out of, regular hoses with these. I never would have known about these garden helpers otherwise. A daily inspiration of garden photos that I can quickly browse through comes from
Gardenista (www.gardenista.com). The gardens are from the US, Britain and Australia primarily. Again lots to swoon at. Years ago I came across You Grow Girl (yougrowgirl.com) a Toronto urban garden blog mainly about edible gardening along with some crafts. I am going to try making walnut ink for art projects from the instructions here. I have always loved a t-shirt they sell with the words “garden hoe” on the front. I haven’t quite gotten up the nerve to wear one though. Another “let me live the dream through other people” blog is Farmgirl Fare (www.farmgirlfare.com) by a woman who 20 years ago, left her life in California to move to the 200+ acre farm in “the middle of nowhere” Missouri. Her blog is full of her adventures, her animals, her garden and lots of recipes. Eastern Kentucky is the home of the
19 Mother of a Hubbard blog (www.motherofahubbard.com). This gardener grows most of the vegetables her family eats. Her garden is also a year round garden in a zone 6 garden region. There are lots of tips to extend the edible gardening season here. There are other gardening blogs I want to check out. If there are garden blogs that I should know about, please let me know. For now, try these out for garden inspiration and information. Linda Wiggen Kraft designs sustainable holistic flower and edible gardens. She is also a mandala artist and workshop leader. She will be leading a 5 day creativity and nature connection retreat in North Carolina in August 2015. the 29th world Peace Day, “heart of Joy”- 6 a.m., Dec. 31 by Jeannie Breeze
S
t. Louis is a heart center where all the arteries come together (the Mississippi, the Missouri, the Meramec). Each year at World Peace Day, we acknowledge the truth that peace begins with us, and we understand that what we imagine and create here in the heart circulates into the body of our Mother Earth. Never has this truth been more evident than in these months since the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO. This event has reached across this nation and around the world. It could not be more obvious that what we do here matters. It seems that our whole community is tasked with the heart-wrenching and heart-opening job of healing the divisions among us. Each of us, a single heart cell in the heart of our nation, like a heart cell, has a beat. Join us at the 29th World Peace Day Celebration, “Heart of Joy”, December 31, 2014, to tune into the beat within your own heart, to remember the love that pulses there. Realize that when we connect, like heart cells do, we come into synch! We become ONE HEART. Together we can be a part of healing the whole. You may think that what you do cannot possibly make a difference, but remember, as Gandhi said, “What you do may seem insignificant, but it is most important that you do it!” Please join us at 6 a.m. at Central Reform Congregation, 5020 Waterman (at Kingshighway), where we will gather in the darkness of the early morn to do our part to heal the world. Doors open at 5 a.m., so that you may inscribe your prayers on a peace flag at artist/photographer Jeane Vogel’s project “Dare to Touch the Face of God”, while you listen to the musical musings of RAVEN WOLF (C. Felton Jennings) on
flute. Or you may wish to enter the sanctuary to greet your friends, or sit in silent meditation in the Shabbot Shalom (Shelter of Peace) as you listen to the sounds of morning songbirds. The musical line-up features the mystical sounds of Robert Fishbone on shofar, gong, and drum, the musical artistry of John MacEnulty on Native American flute, the magical energy of Maggid Georgy Rock, accompanied by Mr. Dill, the musical wizardry of vocalist/guitarist Tim Mead, accompanied by Charlie on drums, and the bells and drums of JOIA World Percussion Ensemble. The warm & wonderful Rabbi Randy Fleisher will welcome congregants to the celebration. Green Jean Ponzi, of KDHX fame, who oversees the creation and placement of the luminarias, will regale us with her exuberant wisdom regarding caring for the Earth, and event organizer Jeannie Breeze will once again lead the meditation, accompanied by the heavenly vibrations created by Sound Healing artist, Patti Pellerito, on Tibetan singing bowls and gongs. As always, a pot-luck breakfast follows (please no pork or shellfish). This universal faith gathering is always FREE and OPEN to ALL! Your love donations are invited to support the continuation of this fabulous event. We need volunteers to come to CRC on Tuesday, December 30, from 1-4 pm to help with the creation and placement of luminarias, breakfast setup, and interior decorations. Call Jeannie Breeze at 314-601-3789 to sign up or contact her by e-mail at jjbreeze46@gmail.com. To find out more about the 29th World Peace Day, and how you can support it, please visit www.wpdaystl.com. Peace, love and healing to all beings! See back page of this magazine for more information.

Earthworms’ Castings with Jean Ponzi
Queen sarah
T
here are great-hearted people in all times and lands all over the Earth whose sacred – and often unofficial – job is to keep our human celebrations lively, growing, truly meaningful, and full of joy. This Celebration-Keeper work is so important that many ancient legends say if the ones who do it ever stop, our world will end. So you know it’s pretty serious stuff. It’s one of life’s Great Mysteries that the women and men who accept this monumental job have so much fun keeping festivity cycling ‘round, through holidays and normal days, year after year, that all their efforts, attention to detail and world-tending responsibility feels - like PLAY! And when you become their helper? Ho-Ho-Ho! It’s fun for you too! I’ve been blessed to play along with one of these legendary humans, my beloved friend Sarah Linquist, who many recognized as a Queen of Christmas. Sarah was profoundly inspired by the classic example, the ultimate CelebrationKeeper: Santa Claus. He started out as Nicholas, seventeen hundred years ago, in a place we now call Turkey. In his real job as a Bishop he enjoyed giving secret gifts so much that the legend of his generous spirit spread far and wide, and pretty soon he had Celebration-Helpers assisting him in his special month, December, as Santa Nicola in Italy, in the Netherlands as Sinterklaas – and in many other names and places. Today at his North Pole address, he leads legions of magical Elves – the hardest-working, most-fun helpers anyone could possibly have – working/playing with Nicholas/Santa to keep his festive tradition giving through centuries of Decembers. Celebration-Keepers have their specialties, and our Sarah’s strength was making every celebration preparation FUN. She did this in addition to her real job, being an Artist. Sarah Jean Linquist was born in Park Ridge, Illinois, in the United States of America, in 1952 on the 18th of December. Sarah’s coming into this sweet world was the
December, 2014 best Christmas present for her mother Jean, her father Alan, and her three older sisters Suzanne, Kate and Ann. They knew a little Queenie had come into their lives! The Linquist family was rich in traditions. Little Sarah learned from her earliest days pleasant ways to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, changes of the seasons, and the year’s parade of holidays – especially Christmas. Her jolly roles included: making cards and presents, dressing up and decorating her environment, singing, preparing and sharing special meals – and befitting her zippy efforts to the spirit of each event. Sarah adored all holidays and welcomed many different ones into her own family. With her (equally festive) husband Robert, children Tyler and Liza (Artists all!) and many intertwining circles of friends, Sarah led the lace-snipping of Valentines, the hand-dipping of Hanukah candles, and the baking of and wishing on countless Happy Birthday cakes. She gathered autumn leaves and spring blooms to festoon Thanksgiving and Passover tables for our grateful gatherings. She cut paper shadow-puppets for our candlelit, bewitching neighborhood Halloween pageant in her Haunted Driveway. We filled her home with flowers and games and wore Sarah-fashioned crowns to ring in decades of New Years. So much celebrating together! And come every December, our Christmas Queen pulled out all the stops and all her boxes of Yuletide tunes and treasures. Her loyal helpers – her Elves! - trooped in to munch a cookie, raise a glass, and decorate her home for days with old-time baubles found at church sales and yard sales, made by crafty lady hands and antique craftsmen. Then friends gamboled in for a luminous night of caroling. Then the children’s rooms stilled to await the bells of Santa’s sleigh. And all through her favorite month, twinkling colors in her home rivaled stars in the winter sky. Love and joy are the source of Queen Sarah’s power! Shared through a life of royally Keeping Celebrations! Jean Ponzi is an Earth Elf, who talks on the radio every week about all things environmental. Tune in Mondays 7-8 pm to “Earthworms” on FM-88 KDHX, or catch a podcast anytime from www.kdhx.org/ondemand.

edicare Supplement insurance is available for those of us who are 65 and older! When was Medicare started? In 1965 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the bill for the start of Medicare. Medicare pays only for Plan A which covers part of your stay in the hospital. The average cost of Plan A from the government is $104 a month which is taken directly out of your Social Security check. Plan A does not pay for doctor’s visits or prescription drugs. Medicare alone is not enough to cover these expenses so in 1985 the insurance companies introduced a plan called Medicare Supplement Insurance that would fill the gaps in the Medicare government sponsored plan. You may buy Medicare Advantage which is an HMO (and limits you to a select group of doctors and hospitals in one region), or you can buy Medicare Supplement which allows you to go anywhere to any Doctor’s office who takes Medicare and pays all or part of your costs.

Call me at 314-432-1888 or please email me at mscohen91444@aol.com to discuss these plans and costs of Medicare Supplement insurance in my office or in your home. Already have a plan? I can help lower your rate through an easy process that may allow you to keep your own doctors. It is also wise to check your plans every year since Insurance companies often raise the premiums on the plans on your anniversary date.

iven our societal obsession with health, it is no wonder that we are always on the lookout for another way to increase our wellness. Endeavors such as regular exercise, massage therapy, proper diet, and meditation are important in maintaining optimal health. One physiological benefit of these choices is increased blood flow – a factor that is crucial in boosting daily health and elevating one’s mood. And, did you know that gazing for a few moments at a work of art you consider beautiful can also add to this increase in blood flow to your brain? Since I’ve first held a crayon, I’ve always enjoyed art. But, despite this appreciation for the creative process, I’d always thought that people who spent money on art were idiots. But, that all changed for me when I actually saw the painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of Grand Jatte by Georges Seurat at the Art Institute of Chicago. Seeing this massive canvas of tiny dots of brilliant color, I was literally moved to tears. The emotions that coursed through me were vibrant and stirring, and I understood at this point the power that art possesses. I experienced first hand what scientists in the field of neuroaesthetics have recently been documenting. It seems that the intense pleasure one has at the sight of a beautiful piece of art is cog-
nitively equivalent to gazing upon a loved one. Professor Semir Zeki, chair in neuroaesthetics at University College in London, noted that when participants viewed works of art considered to be beautiful, the blood flow in the medial orbitofrontal cortex (the part of the brain associated with pleasure and desire) increased by as much as 10 per cent – the equivalent of gazing at a loved one. One can conclude that art can induce a feel good sensation within our brains. Personally, I’ve often wished that any gift that I might give would continue to produce pleasure for them year after year. I’ve rarely seen that happen with most of the gifts I’ve given. But, since experiencing the power of art when viewing Seurat’s work, I’ve vowed to fill my life and my loved one’s lives with works of art to touch their hearts and stimulate their brains. We all want the lives of our loved ones to be full of health and happiness. Given what we know about the relationship between beauty and health, a gift of art is a gift of well-being. Pablo Piccaso once said, “The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls. Filling one’s life with art, or simply giving it as a gift of love and celebration, is pure nourishment for the soul. he holidays are officially upon us, and if you’re like most people, you are riding them out with mixed feelings, vacillating between anticipation and dread as you hustle off to the next party or family commitment, wondering how you will sit through one more minute of small talk, stress, or family feud without combusting into a million pieces. You might be wondering how you will manage to keep a smile on your face, when all the while you dream of being at home, tucked away from all the expectations that abound at this time of the year. We all have an image in our mind of what the “perfect holiday” will look like, complete with foods, people, gifts, baked goods, songs around the fire, and warm embraces from those we love. And no matter what promises we’ve made to ourselves before to do it differently, we engage in the holidays each year, determined that this will be the year that we get it done right. However, despite our best efforts to control the world around us, reality rarely measures up to our own internal image of bliss, but often falls short, evidenced by frustration which comes out in angry words or silent seething, stress, over-eating, over-drinking, and for many, finally succumbing into defeat and simply just trying to “get through” the holidays. The dilemma around all of this stems from the fact that as long as we continue to engage in our present day lives, determined to make up for all the hurts, disappointments, and ruined holidays from early on, we set ourselves up for continual failure and disappointment in the here and now. In this manner, we carry with us all the expectations of a
wounded child still looking for something outside of us to sooth the distress that we carry deep within. And no matter how hard we work to achieve happiness or fulfillment, as long as we continue to look outside of ourselves for this, we will always end up short of these goals. It is like chasing a shadow that is always moving just beyond our reach. The answer to this is simple but not easy. In order to find peace and happiness, we have to address the trauma leftover from childhood in order to be able to meet the world in a realistic manner, with realistic expectations, and an internal stability that is untouchable by the chaos in the outside world around us. This is not an easy task, and many choose not to begin this healing work, but instead continue in the same behaviors and choices that keep them in a loop of disappointment or despair. But for those who decide to begin the hard work to recover and rebirth their wise and beautiful soul child inside, the rewards are immense. And what a wonderful gift this would be to give to your self during this holiday season of reflection and celebration. The Surprising Trick To Creating A Better New Year © Kimberly V. Schneider
I
start hearing it sometime in November each year: “I can’t wait until next year! I need a fresh start.” If you’ve had a difficult year, the sentiment is understandable. We all have challenges every year, but some times are more challenging than others, and if you’re in one of those times, there’s something about the promise of a new beginning that can make you feel hopeful again. However, it’s highly unlikely you’ll experience the new year you want, if you neglect to do one simple thing right now: find a way to make peace with where you are. I know. If you’re feeling frustrated, angry, or sad about the way things have gone this year, asking yourself to make peace with where you are may seem too much. And yet, as long as you hold on to a story about how terrible this year has been, it will be almost impossible for you to feel peaceful and happy later. Here’s why: every time you replay the painful stories from your past, you create more painful feelings in your present. And your future arises from your present experience. So do whatever you can to shift toward an experience of peace and gratitude. Don’t worry: I’ll help, you. We can do it together, right now. Notice your breath. Allow it to gently fill your chest, and your belly. Hold on to it for a second, and as you do so, imagine that the oldest, wisest and most compassionate part of who you are is giving
you a hug and whispering, “you’re alright. No matter what else is going on, I’m right here. And while you may not understand, somehow, all is well. It really is.” Now, release your breath, and as you do, go ahead and release whatever stories you’ve been telling yourself about 2014. Repeat. And repeat. Repeat this process at least 1,000 times between now and December 31st. Repeat it every time you notice yourself caught in an old pattern. Repeat it whenever you feel tired, or scared, or angry. Repeat it when you’re bored. Repeat it when you don’t know what else to do. And of course, keep doing it, right into the New Year. I promise, you’ll feel better. Come on, don’t you feel a little better already? I thought so. Breathe. Relax. Smile. There’s nowhere else to go. No one else to be. Everything you need is right here. Happy Old Year. It is composed of 17 layers of technology, combining Far Infrared Rays (FIR), negative ions and amethyst crystals. Time spent on the mat relieves pain and joint stiffness, reduces stress and fatigue, boosts the immune system, burns calories and many other healthful benefits. Infrared Rays, nature’s invisible light and most
beneficial light wave, penetrate skin and increase circulation to detoxify the body of harmful toxins. The FIR can increase blood flow and clean the arteries (which means it can help lower blood pressure), release toxins, increase metabolism, heal soft tissue and relax muscles. Negative Ions are Nature’s Energizer. Ion particles cleanse and purify the air we breathe. Amethyst bolsters the production of the hormones

Our approach to holistic health includes the entire body and the oral cavity is no exception. We are dedicated to serving our patients and promoting a level of health care that carefully evaluates and reviews the use of dental materials, dental procedures and also offers dietary and nutritional support for each and every individual that is seen in our office.
Did you know that examining the mouth can reveal the presence of illnesses or unstable conditions in other areas of the body? If you feel like you’ve just about exhausted all your options in your search for better health, have your mouth examined with a different approach in mind. Get motivated, get educated, and get ready to participate in a
health-oriented lifestyle that will provide dental alternatives and a nutritional foundation designed to help support your own body’s healing powers.
The focus of holistic dentistry is to consider the mouth as a part of the whole body. We use materials and methods that are more compatible biologically with the body instead of the traditional dental materials. Examples of non-compatible materials are mercury fillings, non-precious heavy metal crowns, bridges and partials or dentures. Alternatives to fluoride are used
for the prevention of cavities. Proper alignment of the jaws and teeth are the foundation of how the body perceives itself in space. The result of improper alignment can result in symptoms of headache, ears ringing, loss of hearing, pain in the head and neck and clenching or grinding of the teeth. Good nutrition is inseparable for good
health. If your diet consists of food and drink made with white flour, sugar and no fresh fruits and vegetables, your body is likely to be acidic with resultant more medical and dental problems. For your dental evaluation contact our office for an appointment by calling 636-4589090 or email at cherryhillsdds@yahoo.com.

Parasites as a New, Emerging, Global Environmental Threat:
Discover new

A Paradigm Shift in Environmental Medicine By Simon Yu, MD
I
s it possible that parasites are still a problem as a global environmental problem in this modern age? Recently, I gave two similar lectures on parasites at the American Academy of Environmental Medicine in New Mexico and at the Medicine Week in Baden Baden, Germany in November, 2014. My lectures focused on parasites as a new emerging global environmental threat that have been overlooked by main stream conventional medicine and environmental medicine doctors. Let me give you a quick summary of the lecture on why and how parasites have become a new global environmental threat. Most of the common parasite problems are caused by Ascaris, Hookworms, Whipworms, Filarial worms, Flukes, Malaria, and Entamoeba histolyca. Global statistics on parasites indicate a total of 4.46 billion people are infected by parasites. Millions are dying as the leading cause of morbidity and mortality on a global scale, much greater than any viral, bacterial, or fungal infection (World Health Organization and Centers for Disease Control). Media sensationalism and statistics can be misleading. The Ebola virus epidemic in Africa has stolen the headlines and captured the imagination and fear by the public. But, every day, more people are not only dying from obvious parasites but also from undiagnosed parasite problems causing malnutrition, anemia, or compromised immune systems. Yet, precious resources are mis-directed due to the Ebola virus sensationalism. Why are parasite problems overlooked? They’re overlooked because there are no reliable ways to detect parasites, and we assume parasites are only in third world countries. Also overlooked is the transfer of parasites on a global basis due to worldwide global migration, change in diets around the world, effects compounded by global climate changes, and global travel. I just saw a patient from the east coast of the U.S. who was in good health until she took a vacation in Jamaica in December 2013. She thought she had some benign insect bite. However, several weeks later she developed vague upper abdominal pain and, later, shoulder and arm pain. She ended up seeing about ten different specialists with a final diagnosis of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome with a recommendation for a special operation. Her problem was most likely from an unrecognized parasite problem. I put her on triple parasite meds. I will soon find out if she responds to the medications. Often, I use a U.S. Army military operation point of view as an analogy to explain that parasites are like an asymmetric threat, and engaged in unconventional warfare to mankind. Unconventional warfare must be dealt with by using unconventional counter-solutions based on Energy Medicine and acupuncture meridian assessment to track, monitor (Pattern Recognition), and neutralize them. One of the main emphases of the lectures was that most parasite problems may manifest outside of the GI tract, i.e. as asthma or bronchiectasis in the lung, brain fog or migraine headache, anemia, cyst, tumor, allergies or suppression of allergies, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, behavioral or vision problems, etc. The other emphasis is thinking of parasites and parasitic infectious relationships. Parasites have their own associated concurrent co-infections with viruses, bacteria, and fungi. The worldwide medical literature reviewed by the University of Calgary, Canada demonstrated many parasites mimic malignancies, such as Spinal cord tumors by Angiostrongylus, lung cancer by
Strongyloides stercoralis and Paragonimus westermani, Brain tumor by Schistosoma, Colon tumor by Fasciola hepatica, and Duedoenum adenomacarcinoma by Strongyloides stercoralis. A review by Tufts University School of Medicine also showed a connection between chronic bacterial and parasitic infections and cancer, such as Salmonella Typhi with carcinoma of gallbladder and pancreas, Chlamydia with carcinoma of lung, ovary, and lymphoma, Schistosoma with bladder, cervical, colorectal, and liver cancer, Liver flukes with cholangiocarcinoma, and chronic osteomyelitis with myeloma, fibrosarcoma, and angiosarcoma. (The most common source of osteomyelitis comes from hidden dental/jaw infections). One of the hardest parts of treating parasites as a physician is that there are no reliable tests available. In previous articles, I have addressed this short coming in using a stool test. I also discussed how I started using parasite medications while I was in Bolivia as a U.S. Army medical officer. Veterinarians are familiar with parasite problems for animals. They routinely prescribe parasite medications. But medical professionals are afraid to treat parasites unless we can identify and name the type of parasites. They do not initiate routine parasite medications even when they highly suspect that their patient might be suffering from parasite infestations. Regular deworming and routine dental care may have prolonged the average life span of horses from less than 20 years to about 40 years according to professional horse breeders. (This information is from a patient who is a professional horse breeder). Can you imagine doubling the human life span by routine deworming and dental care? That would be an absolute nightmare for the government! Anti-aging medical doctors may need to know how to use parasite medications if they are serious about prevention, healing, and longevity medicine. The most common medications I use include Ivermectin, Pyrantel pamoate, Albendazole, Mebendazole, Tinidazole, Alinia, Praziquantel, and Levamisole. I encouraged the medical doctors who heard my presentations to try parasite medications on themselves first, then on their families, and finally, when they feel comfortable, try on patients they suspect have parasite problems. Acupuncture meridian assessment, a new biometric system based on ancient knowledge, measures conductance and resistance at the acupuncture meridian points. It maps out a new way of pattern recognition for detecting and treating parasites. Parasites may be a hidden, new, emerging global environmental threat: a paradigm shift in the field of environmental medicine on a global scale. Dr. Simon Yu, M.D. is a Board Certified Internist. He practices Internal Medicine with an emphasis on Alternative Medicine to use the best each has to offer. Better Parenting Through Awareness & Self Care By Vera Gabliani, Ph.D.

eveloping your skill as a parent is an ongoing process that benefits from a thoughtful focus. So many of us are busy and preoccupied with just getting through our day that we forget to be present and actively choose the way we are in relation to our children. So here is a gentle reminder list of some important points to consider that will help you create more of what you would prefer. #1 Get clear on what really matters to you about your relationship with your child. What do you like about your relationship and what are your recurrent frustrations or disappointments? #2 In case the first item triggered some selfblame or guilt, just take a moment to appreciate yourself for your willingness to become more aware of yourself and your choices. #3 Calmer parents are better able to choose how they respond to their children. Create pauses in your day to gift yourself with space to unplug. Try just five minutes of turning off your phone and gazing out into nature or recalling a happy memory and notice how this simple practice improves your interactions. #4 Share your journey as a parent by connecting
with supportive others. You were never meant to raise your children on your own. #5 When a challenge arises, step back from the situation. The time you take to gain perspective on your options and any course corrections makes a huge difference. Remember that reacting means acting out old patterns, most of which we want to delete not repeat. #6 Notice and be grateful for all the good in your relationship with your children EVERY DAY! This deliberate focused attention creates new brain and behavior pathways. Share all the good you are appreciating out loud with your children. What you focus upon and express is powerful and validates and creates change for you and your children. #7 Get some professional support to re-work any of your old programming that is creating conflicts or communication issues. Know that parenting is challenging because your children often trigger any unfinished business you have with your own parents or your childhood experiences. This is a natural process of growing into your role as a parent and a wiser adult. Dr. Vera Gabliani has been teaching and empowering parents and their teens for over 20 years. She looks forward to talking with you and can be reached at (314) 966-0880.

Staying Active During The Holidays by Kari Hartel, RD, LD Program Coordinator, Cooking Matters, Operation Food Search
A
s winter settles in around us, we often start to slack off when it comes to physical activity. It’s not difficult to see why this happens – it’s cold and snowy outside, which limits the ability to do fun, outdoorsy activities, and we fall into the lazy comforts of cozying up on the couch with loved ones and snacking on the abundance of holiday goodies. Additionally, the days are much shorter and the limited hours of sunlight don’t encourage us to get outside and get moving. However, it’s important to stay active throughout the holiday season and the rest of the winter. Being physically active every day helps us avoid weight gain, keeps our tickers ticking properly, increases our energy levels, wards off depression and anxiety, and helps prevent cancer, heart disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases. That long list of benefits should be enough to help encourage us to get off the couch and get moving, but it’s more difficult to get motivated to exercise during the holidays and cold winter months. There are ways to make sure we get up, get out, and get going, even if it’s snowing! Here are few tips: • Embrace the season and enjoy outdoor winter activities. Ice-skating, sledding, building snowmen (especially if you have young children or grandchildren) can be tremendously fun and are great forms of exercise. Be sure to bundle up – having a good supply of thick, warm gloves, scarves and hats handy will help ensure you’re
ready for some refreshing outdoor events. • The holiday season also brings on the shopping season. Great news for your waistline (maybe not for your wallet) is that shopping is great exercise. Round up a few friends or family members and hit the mall. Just be sure to have a healthy snack before you head out on your shopping adventure – most shopping mall food courts don’t offer up the healthiest options. • Invest in a set of 5-10 pounds dumbbells and keep them by your couch. Since you’ll likely be spending more time indoors and in front of the television (Christmas movie marathons, perhaps?), keep your muscles strong by lifting weights while you watch. Lifting weights at least two to three times per week will guarantee you build and maintain muscle mass, which incinerates calories even while you’re at rest. • Don’t forget about Fido! If you have a dog, make sure you’re keeping man’s best friend active as well. Dogs need daily exercise, and a brisk, long walk will keep both of you in shape during the winter. Don’t have a pet of your own? No worries. Many animal shelters need people to volunteer to walk their dogs. You’ll be getting exercise and it is all for a good cause. I call that a win-win. Join the Anchors & Reporters of KMOV-TV between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 11 at the West Oak Dierbergs store in Creve Coeur, MO and the Green Mount Crossing Dierbergs in Shiloh, IL. They will be on hand between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. to say hello and collect food for our neighbors in need during their Thanks4Giving Can-a-thon to benefit Operation Food Search!

holiday stress & Winter dry skin?
HERB LADY
Q: My skin gets so dry during the winter months. What can I do to help prevent the itching and scaling? A: Cold air outside and dry warm air inside usually does make our skin dry. Using a humidifier helps a lot, but there are several things you can do to keep your skin hydrated. Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's) such as fish oil and flax oil are good examples. Another great choice is Hyaluronic Acid. It acts as an internal moisturizer and lubricant. It rejuvenates skin and smooths premature lines and wrinkles. As an added benefit, it lubricates and cushions joints. Our bodies naturally produce hyaluronic acid, however, as we age, we produce less of it. Visible signs are dull, dry and wrinkled skin. These are a couple of ways to nourish your skin from the inside, now for the outside. Never use lotions that contain parabens or petroleum products. Look for lotions that contain naturals oils such as; jojoba, coconut, sesame, olive, wheat germ or sweet almond. You want your skin to drink up the oils, not just sit on top of the skin making it appear softer and more moisturized. Q: The holidays are coming and I can already feel my stress levels going up. I really don't want to take any type of pills but would like something to help calm me. Any suggestions? A: Welcome to the holidays. A lot people are feeling exactly like you. Lavender essential oil is a good choice for promoting calmness. You can diffuse it in a
room, add it to a bath, mix with your favorite lotion or even put it directly on your skin as a cologne. Putting it on neat may make you too relaxed and you may want to fall asleep, so experiment with it first. Rescue Remedy is probably one of my favorites for stress. It is a blend of flower essences that can restore peace of mind and emotional balance. It is believed that if your emotional balance is correct, your body's natural ability to throw off illness can be strengthened. Rescue Remedy can be taken any time you feel stressed or anxious, including if you have an argument, accident, before public speaking, taking an exam, loss of a loved one, fear of something or even a visit to the dentist or doctor. This also includes holiday shopping and relatives. This works strictly on an emotional level and is considered safe for everyone, even our pets. There are no side effects and will not interfere with any other form of treatment or medication.

Ho! Ho! Ho! Santa Says to Protect Your Pets from the Dangers of the Christmas Tree! by Dr. Doug Pernikoff, DVM
C
hristmas is a wonderful time for family and friends to share the miracle of life, with all the love and merriment of the holiday season. Our homes are adorned with holiday lighting, poinsettia plants and mistletoe. Lots of goodies like brownies and other wonderfully fattening foodstuffs, and of course, the central adornment being the family Christmas Tree that umbrellas a score of presents of all sizes and shapes, covering the tree’s base. So, What’s To Worry???? Let me tell you what to be alert to in order to protect your beloved family pets from potential dangers insidiously integrated into this most joyful holiday setting. As with Thanksgiving, there are any number of food items that can encourage intestinal problems in our dogs and cats, some that can even prove life threatening. With Christmas, a new further collection of potential health issues can arise with our pets’ exposure to many of those objects associated with Christmas, and in particular, regarding our Christmas Trees. Puppies and especially kittens or cats, are notoriously interested in exploring and grasping objects into their mouths. Electric cords to light our trees can be very concerning, causing any degree of damage from simple skin burns to actual electrocution through biting and chewing actions. Try to keep them covered and out of direct access to our pets. Another significant issue regards the yarn, string and other binding objects associated with all those exciting presents surrounding the tree. In particular, cats will begin to play with loose ends of these twine like objects, and will actually begin chewing and swallowing them without good reason. The same issue concerns reflective tinsel dangling from Christmas Tree branches, a real bait for our predatory cats, who love the motion as well as the reflectivity of this item. As the cat swallows these items, they move slowly along the intestinal tract, after a portion exits the stomach. The bowel inherently attempts to contract and move the string items along, and as a result, causes a bunching up of intestines. Soon the intestines have tightened up and as their contractility persists, can actually scissor through the lining, eventually rupturing and allowing dangerous intestinal bacteria and debris to fall free into the abdominal cavity. A life threatening condition called peritonitis can ensue, and nary an evening passes at the Emergency clinic without a very sick cat entering in need of immediate and significantly dangerous surgical exploration and more. And remember that any plastic or glass ornament can break, exposing pets to lacerations, or again, if ingested, and only God knows why they would do so, may impose serious medical and sur-
gical needs in caring for our animal patients. Many people adorn their Christmas Trees with chocolate candies, that we have learned in the past, can prove toxic to our family pets. Keep such items well away from Fido and Felix. Finally, remember that animals will explore and chew at plants that are featured at the holiday time. Poinsettias and mistletoe, can both be irritating and if ingested in large amounts, can prove very toxic. As with any of these concerns mentioned herein, I encourage committed pet owners to take serious note to prevent any of these potential calamities to occur, most certainly impacting the peace and tranquility intended for all of us to enjoy this wonderful holiday time. Be well! Be safe! Enjoy the Christmas and New Year season with all your family, your friends and of course, your family pets. All my love! The Marvels of Medicinal Mushrooms By Teresa Garden, DVM
M
any cultures throughout the world have known and revered mushrooms for their medicinal powers for hundreds of years. Modern research can now explain what the ancient healers already knew through practical experience. Studies indicate medicinal mushrooms contain polysaccharides (beta glucans), lysozymes, and triterpenes, which have antibacterial, antiviral, and antitumor properties. Mushrooms can stimulate the immune system and assist in healing liver, heart, and kidney tissue. Medicinal mushrooms are Qi (life energy) tonics and can support the body in the treatment of edema, diarrhea, urinary tract infections, prostate problems, kidney disease, and inflammation. The most common use of these mushrooms may be for cancer. Clinical trials in Japan showed mushrooms not only inhibited tumor growth and regeneration but also minimized side-effects from chemotherapeutic drugs. Beta glucans, one of the active constituents of medicinal mushrooms, were shown to stimulate macrophages and T-lymphocytes. Whole mushroom extracts contain compounds that modulate carcinogenesis at different stages. A few of the more popular medicinal mushrooms are Reishi, Shitake, and Maitake. Reishi Mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) is known as “the herb of immortality. Animal studies have confirmed numerous pharmacological activities and effects of this mushroom upon the body. Polysaccharides contained in Reishi demonstrated antitumor and immunostimulating activity. Polysaccharides stimulate macrophages to produce more tumor necrosis factor(TNF-alpha) and a number of interleukins. Reishi’s polysaccharides were shown to increase RNA and DNA synthesis in bone marrow. The Japanese government officially listed Reishi as an adjunct herb for cancer years ago. Reishi contains more germanium than any other plant or mushroom. Germanium increases oxygen utilization of the blood. This can help with heart disease and altitude sickness. Lysozymes in Reishi are antibacterial against Staph, Strep, and Bacillus pneumoniae bacteria. Triterpenes in Reishi can help with allergies by inhibiting histamine release. Triterpenes also have antioxidant activity and protect the liver. Other healing effects of Reishi are: enhances bone marrow proliferation, regenerates bronchial epithelium, increases white blood cells, protects against ionizing radiation, and provides analgesia and muscle relaxation. Shitake Mushroom (Lentinula edodes) is considered an “elixir of life in Japan. Polysaccharides extracted from the fruiting bodies of this mushroom showed anti-tumor and immunostimulating activities by increasing phagocytic activity of the peritoneal macrophages. One of the polysaccharides contain a
peptide complex (KS-2) which strongly inhibited tumor growth in animals when given orally. Powdered Shitake taken orally inhibited the growth of sarcoma 180 and mon-46 tumor by 40%. If fed to animals after tumor implantation, the tumor inhibition rate increased by 54%. Powdered whole shitake fruiting bodies given orally to animals with tumors improved macrophage phagocytosis which plays a role in tumor-inhibiting activity. Lentinan, another component of Shitake, produces an anti-tumor effect by activating natural killer cells which cause tumor suppression. Shitake contains 30 enzymes, 10 aminoacids, and are high in many minerals. Recent studies show Shitake mushrooms can lower blood pressure, decrease cholesterol, prevent heart disease, and fight cancer. The Japanese believe Shitakes can enhance vital energy and cure colds. This mushroom has been shown to stimulate white blood cells, antibodies, and interferon. Maitake Mushroom (Grifola frondosa) is known as the “dancing mushroom in Japan and the “chicken of the woods in the West. In animal studies, powdered Maitake was shown to enhance the activities of macrophages, natural killer cells, and cytotoxic T-cells, inducing an 86% tumor growth inhibition. Their polysaccharides have both anti-tumor and immune-enhancing effects in animals. One component, b-1,6-glucan, was shown to stimulate interleukin which may be responsible for its anti-tumor action. The fruiting bodies of Maitake contain a polysaccharide called DFraction. D-Fractions demonstrated efficacy in inhibiting tumor growth and restoring immune functions that had been suppressed due to growing cancers. Other health benefits of Maitske include: lowering blood pressure, decreasing cholesterol, protecting liver tissue, and decreasing blood glucose. Medicinal mushrooms are powerful healers that can help with many diseases afflicting dogs, cats, and people. Combining two or more of these mushrooms together results in synergistic activity. Medicinal mushrooms are safe and without contraindications for use. No interactions with drugs have been reported. At Animal Health & Healing, we employ these mushrooms first and foremost to treat our cancer patients. Other patients that can benefit from their use are those with liver disease, cardiac problems, geriatrics with weakness and muscle atrophy, cats with Feleuk, FIV, or chronic URI, and weak puppies and kittens with severe parasitism. These are but a few of the marvelous healing benefits of medicinal mushrooms. is the use of light to create an anti-aging effect on the skin and is quickly becoming recognized as one of the safest, fastest and most affordable ways to achieve younger, more vibrant looking skin. Physicians and aestheticians agree, it is the most powerful and effective way to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the skin. Visible red (620nm-700nm) light shows at least 24 different positive changes at a cellular level. Red light penetrates into the derma layer of the skin, energizing the cells, thereby helping to create collagen, which helps to plump up the skin, and elastin, which helps to firm the skin and diminish fine lines and wrinkles.
Red Light Therapy Benefits: • Restores skin cells • Reduces fine lines, scars, acne, wrinkles, stretch marks and age spots • Stimulates collagen synthesis • Smooths and reduces cellulite deposits
• Treats seasonal affective disorders • Increases moisture retention • Increases blood circulation • Increases lymphatic system activity • Decreases skin flaws like Psoriasis, Eczema and Rosacea
PAIN RELIEF: • Herniated and Bulging Discs • Osteoarthritis • Fibromyalgia • Joint and Muscle pain • Inflammation • Nerve and Sports injuries • Neck pain and stiffness • Wounds and damaged skin • Kills bacteria
