The Squirrels Ate My Pumpkins
B
y the time November rolls around in St. Louis, most of the leaves are off the trees, except for a few tough oak leaves which are the last to bloom and the last to fall. I will have raked at least once by the time you read this and another sweep around the yard or two is certainly on my list. The colors were quite brilliant this year. Just the right mix of temperature and moisture created a rainbow of Fall foliage for all to enjoy. November is really a transitional time. Sort of bridge month here in the Mississippi Valley. The days really begin to shorten and the nights become as crisp as a fresh red apple. With summer behind and winter ahead, our minds and hearts are filled with memories and anticipation of what has come and what will come. There has been a bumper crop of squirrels this year and the little buggers ate big holes in my pumpkins on the porch in pursuit of the sweet gourmet seeds inside. Well, there was no need to carve them for Halloween, they already look gruesome enough. Yes, I like Autumn, but it leads to Winter and I will miss Summer’s sweet smile. November brings us Thanksgiving and we feast on tradition. Family, food and creating memories that will last a lifetime. Our grandson will be old enough this year to eat turkey, dressing and my mom’s famous green beans. Now in his 16th month, Jackson has become quite the book lover.
My wife Niki sits with him and reads book after book. Some books many times over. You would think those monkeys would know by now not to jump on the bed. I suppose Winter will be a good time to cuddle up for more Jackson time. That will help us get through the doldrums. And before you think it’s just me that laments the arrival of ole man Winter, let’s see what Longfellow has to say: “Magnificent Autumn! He comes not like a pilgrim, clad in russet weeds. He comes not like a hermit, clad in gray. But he comes like a warrior, with the stain of blood upon his brazen mail. His crimson scarf is rent.... The wind.... wafts to us the odor of forest leaves, that hang wilted on the dripping branches, or drop into the stream. Their gorgeous tints are gone, as if the autumnal rains had washed them out. Orange, yellow, and scarlet, all are changed to one melancholy russet hue.... There is a melancholy and continual roar in the tops of the tall pines.... It is the funeral anthem of the dying year. ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow On a health note, I want to encourage all you readers out there to get a colonoscopy. Especially you men over 50. I finally got my first one and they found and removed a couple of polyps that could have turned into something bad down the road. So make sure you get your check-ups. Your life may depend on it! And so the beginning of the Holiday season starts. Make sure your gifts this year are from the heart, all-natural and healthy. And don’t forget just plain fun! There are lots of ideas here in the Planet within our Natural Living Gift and Holiday Guide. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with friends and family. Create warm memories! In Good Health,

Fun and Philanthropy at “Green Ball” Will Celebrate Sustainability Fifth annual Green Ball to Benefit EarthWays Center of the Missouri Botanical Garden
T
he fifth annual Green Ball will roll out the green carpet in the Delmar Loop to welcome the green-minded movers and shakers of St. Louis for a night of fun philanthropy. Presented by Moonrise Hotel, Green Ball 2014 will be held from 7-11 p.m., Friday, Nov. 14, in celebration of all things green. Proceeds from the gala will benefit the EarthWays Center, a division of the Missouri Botanical Garden that promotes sustainability through environmental education and improving the built environment. Ticket prices are $40 for Garden members and $50 for nonmembers. Tickets include locally-sourced and organic appetizers and seasonal cocktails, prepared by the Eclipse Restaurant’s award winning staff, plus complimentary bar service. Swinging hot jazz by Miss Jubilee and visually stunning Vivant entertainers roaming amongst the crowd create a “mod autumnal” theme. To highlight the importance of making events “green,” the ball will be zero waste. Brochures will be printed on recycled paper, food waste will be composted and décor will be eco-friendly. Paper and glass waste will be recycled, and St. Louis’ nationally known “best tasting” tap water will be offered to guests, rather than bottled water. Free valet parking will be provided to carpools of four or more riders. “We’re so pleased to partner with the Moonrise for this fifth annual Green Ball,” said Glenda Abney, director of the EarthWays Center. “It’s a fun and unique way to raise sustainability awareness in St. Louis. It’s also a great way to showcase the various Moonrise green building features. Green Ball guests will enjoy an unforgettable evening, while helping the EarthWays Center demonstrate how their choices affect the environment." Come dressed in your eco-fashion finest and snap a picture in the fun interactive photo booth. “Creative green” attire is strongly encouraged. An expert panel of fashion and style judges will award “Best Dressed” prizes including an overnight stay at the Moonrise
Hotel and more to three impressive winners. Whether it’s recycled, handmade, eco-friendly, vintage or just plain green, designs of all kinds will be in the spotlight. The idea for the Green Ball developed five years ago, when the Moonrise Hotel decided to stage an event to celebrate those “living green” in the St. Louis area and draw attention to local green businesses and organizations. The EarthWays Center seemed a natural beneficiary. The Moonrise Hotel itself employs extensive green efforts such as hotel-wide recycling and composting, the first hotel-bar open-air roof in America made entirely of solar panels, and an electric vehicle car charging station. During the event, guests may purchase raffle tickets for premium baskets of their choice, including ecofriendly home goods, gift certificates to local businesses and restaurants, and energy efficiency items like a home energy audit. All proceeds from the raffle will benefit the EarthWays Center. To purchase your Green Ball 2014 tickets, please visit the event webpage or call 314-577-5118. Additional event information may also be found on Facebook. The Green Ball is hosted by EarthWays Center of the Missouri Botanical Garden. Presenting sponsorship is provided by Moonrise Hotel. If you are interested in sponsoring the Green Ball or making a raffle donation please contact Joyce Gorrell at joyce.gorrel@ MOBOT.org or 314-577-0220. While the Missouri Botanical Garden’s mission is to protect and preserve plants, the EarthWays Center specifically focuses on helping people learn to live more sustainably. EarthWays offers more than 20 programs and projects on sustainable living and learning for students, educators, business and community leaders, municipalities and green building professionals and contractors in Missouri throughout the year. More than 45,000 households in the St. Louis region hold memberships to the Missouri Botanical Garden. Memberships begin at $65 ($60 for seniors) and offer 12 months of free general admission for two adults and all children ages 12 and under, plus exclusive invitations and discounts. Members help support the Garden’s operations and world-changing work in plant science and conservation. Learn more at www.mobot.org/membership.

he St. Louis Health Equipment and Lending Program (St. Louis HELP) offers a unique service to thousands of donors and recipients each year. How the program works is practical and simple; yet immensely beneficial. Those who no longer have a use for their home medical equipment can easily donate it to St. Louis HELP. These items are then made available at no cost to those in need for as long as necessary. Before the medical equipment is distributed from St. Louis HELP’s warehouse, all items are checked for functionality, cleaned and repaired if needed. Any unsuitable items are recycled accordingly. Because of the program’s primary mission, more than 5,000 people are provided with medical equipment that enables them to live as independently as possible and remain contributing members of the community. Moreover, the recycle and reuse aspects of the program account for the diversion of more than 115.6 tons of waste from landfills annually. Each year, St. Louis HELP distributes more than $2.1 million worth of medical equipment due to the generous donations from local donors. Through this service, program recipients benefit from $1.26 million annually in equipment while an additional $892,000 is distributed through partnerships with local organizations. Annual follow-up calls with equipment ben-

Although St. Louis HELP accepts and appreciates donations throughout the year, equipment drives conducted at various locations are hugely important. The largest events, in the spring and fall, are held at 12 local Walgreen’s locations. Volunteers at each site accept equipment donations, load them onto trucks and deliver them to the warehouse. Your view has been obscured by an enormous metal dumpster that will soon fill up with drywall scraps, lumber, bricks, cardboard boxes, umpteen crumpled up fast food bags, windows, cabinets, and even the kitchen sink. Weeks, maybe months, later the dumpster has gone to the landfill, the humming sound of the power saw and air the compressor subside, and your neighbors’ house gleams that remodeled gleam. If you have ever asked yourself if there was another way to do things so that all that stuff didn’t go to the landfill, then you should get to know Refab. Jack Kaufmann Uses Music To Teach Recycling To Area Children
ost of us are aware that waste reduction and recycling are important factors in preserving the earth’s resources; especially for our children. So naturally, as we do our part, we also strive to inform and educate young people about how our actions impact the environment. So how do we get kid’s attention these days? “In-The-Green Productions by Jack Kaufmann” accomplishes this by incorporating music and multimedia. He entertains and educates thousands of elementary students about waste reduction and recycling each year. His creative, interactive and musical style captivates students and staff throughout the presentation. Follow-up evaluations from staff and administrators highly praise the live productions. WIld WREAThs / PRAyER WhEEls
By Pat Tuholske. My Wild Wreaths and Prayer Wheels are crafted from Ozark native grasses, wayside weeds, everlasting flowers, tree bark, lichens, seeds, cones and feathers. As I weave these gifts of the wild, I envision each as a portal into nature - a circle of life crafted from living elements of the prairie, meadow and forest that is a symbol of the turning of the year and the web of life. Wreaths have been used throughout history to celebrate the changing of the seasons, bless the home, tend the sick, and honor the ancestors. Earthworms’ Castings with Jean Ponzi
selective Perception (holiday style)
A
message might merrily seep. Especially in a middle-aged brain grown drafty enough that . . . now what was I just going to say?
mental Mute button automatically controls my attention this time of year. When activated, it completely blocks my ability to perceive anything Christmas! This can kick on anywhere, anytime - but it happens most in retail environments.
Nope. Can’t see, can’t hear, can’t smell or any other way can’t comprehend so much as a whiff of wassail before the dawn of - Turkey Day! Despite the variable onset of my hollyjolly filtering phenomenon, I can set my clock for the day it dissolves, revealing a world of festive splendor: on Thanksgiving morning, when I go downtown for the St. Louis Holiday Parade.
I’ll be walking through unlikely aisles – in the drug store or supermarket – and suddenly, next to the lipstick or bananas, there’ll be a big black hole in the merchandise view. I can see beyond these sensory no-zones, perfectly normal and plain as day, the next row of vitamins or cheese or whatever. But not into the anomaly. Though I’ve noticed these spaces often glow faintly, red and green.
That day I carol with the marching bands, holler “THANKS for serving” at police and firefighter honor guards and waving mayors, and urge Miss Tall Missouri to stand up in her convertible car and show us just how winsome-willowy she is.
My brain blockade assembles earlier every year. This time I experienced it before Labor Day! That was disorienting, let me tell you. In the last week my fashion ethics let me go about in tie-dye and white shoes I’m jaunting along on a visit to a favorite local cultural institution and I glance into the gift shop and ho-HO! The Muzak mutes and everything before my eyes pixellates like a TV news shot of naughty body parts. You’d think such selectivity would have some loopholes, some chinks through which a snatch of Fa-la-la or an ornament’s glitter or an EVERYONE ON YOUR LIST advertising
Starting that day and not one instant before, I can revel in the sights and sounds of a season I have not been bugged by, through consumer culture’s crush. The month or so between Thanksgiving and actual calendar Yuletide provides plenty of magical moments to steep my spirit in both trappings and traditions of The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year. More than that, thankfully, is lost on me. Jean Ponzi’s perceptions are Green yearround, as host of the environmental talk show “Earthworms,” heard Mondays 7-8 p.m. on FM-88 KDHX St. Louis Community Radio, or as a podcast anytime at www.kdhx.org/ondemand.

This is a must attend seminar for anyone suffering from Fibromyalgia/Chronic Pain
a Functional approach to Diabetes by Dr. Adam Hughes, D.C.
A
nyone with diabetes knows it’s important to manage insulin levels. Functional medicine offers unique tools to manage insulin and blood sugar -- including diet, exercise, stress management, detoxification, and maximizing essential nutrients. To understand how all these tools apply, it’s helpful to know how insulin works. insulin and Blood sugar: a Balancing act Insulin helps keep glucose (sugar) levels in the bloodstream within normal range. When you eat, carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, our primary energy source. When glucose enters the bloodstream, the pancreas responds by producing insulin, which enables glucose to enter the body’s tissues. Excess glucose is stored in the liver; when needed to sustain blood sugar between meals, the liver releases sugar and the pancreas responds with more insulin to help it enter cells. This balancing act keeps blood sugar stable. When the pancreas secretes little or no insulin (type I diabetes), when your body doesn’t produce enough insulin, or when your cells are resistant to insulin (insulin resistance, common in type II diabetes), sugar levels in the bloodstream can get too high. Chronic high blood sugar can lead to complications such as blindness, nerve damage, and kidney damage. Managing Insulin with a Multi-Faceted Approach Certain factors increase the need for insulin: Diet What you eat affects your blood sugar and insulin levels. • Not eating regularly, and eating larger meals causes drops and spikes in blood sugar and insulin, driving insulin resistance If blood sugar is a problem, better to eat smaller, more frequent meals to keep blood sugar and insulin levels stable. • Processed and fast foods drive inflammation, which causes insulin resistance and other disease processes. It also increases cortisol levels, which can increase blood sugar levels.
15
• Food sensitivities cause immune and inflammatory responses, which causes insulin resistance. Many people have food sensitivities they don’t know about. • Pay attention to Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load. Glycemic index measures the insulin response your body has after eating a food. The higher the number, the more insulin your pancreas needs to secrete. Glycemic load is the amount of that food eaten. Exercise Fat cells have insulin receptors. Exercise burns calories and fat; fewer cells mean less need for insulin. And, when you exercise, your muscles need more energy to fire and insulin receptor sites become more receptive. Even a short walk can reduce blood sugar levels7) 6) Inability to Sleep, and insulin demands dramatically. stress Up to 90 percent of doctor visits are related to chronic stress. Stress has big impact on insulin by decreasing insulin receptor sensitivity, elevating cortisol, and causing the liver to raise blood sugar (the body’s way of increasing energy to handle stressful situations). Raised blood sugar means more insulin. toxins Toxins are found throughout our environment -- in body products, food, air, and water. The body gets overworked trying to deal with them, causing inflammation and increasing insulin resistance. Inflammation shuts down receptor sites, requiring the body to make more insulin. a multi-Faceted approach is Key For proper diabetes management, we must provide adequate exercise, proper nutrition, and manageable stress levels. As a functional health provider, I understand that you have unique needs and our clinic is prepared to help you develop a customized action plan to manage your blood sugar and insulin levels. Dr. Adam Hughes is a Chiropractor and Functional Medicine Practitioner at Kingen Chiropractic Wellness Center. www.DrAdamHughes.com. 314-646-0013.

Ffresh R E S H fare FARE I’m Boasting About Roasting Vegetables by Kari Hartel, RD, LD Program Coordinator, Cooking Matters, Operation Food Search
F
all is upon us and with it comes a variety of coolweather vegetables. One of the best ways to fully enjoy the delicious, intense flavor of vegetables is to roast them. Roasting vegetables amplifies their natural sweetness, concentrates their flavor, and provides a beautiful browning on the outside. Roasted veggies also win over even the toughest critics—those who turn their noses up at Brussels sprouts or butternut squash. Another benefit to roasting vegetables is that it is a quick and easy process. Most of the work can be done ahead of time. You simply chop up a variety of your favorite vegetables, toss them together with some oil, herbs, and spices, and lay them on a pan and roast. There are a couple of chef tips to keep in mind. Always roast in a hot oven – about 450475°F. The vegetables won’t take much time to cook, likely only 15-20 minutes. Your veggies will have a nice browning on the outside and will be tender on the inside. Another tip: be sure to cut all of your vegetables into evenlysized pieces to ensure that they cook evenly. If the vegetables are cut into uneven sizes, some small pieces will burn while others large chunks will be undercooked. Lastly, line the pan with parchment paper and spread the vegetables out so none are overlapping. PASTA WITH ROASTED VEGETABLES Ingredients 1 medium onion 1 small summer squash, or 1/2 medium winter squash 1 handful mushrooms 1 small head cauliflower
1/4 cup canola oil 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper Non-stick cooking spray 1 (16-ounce) package whole wheat pasta Optional Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups grated Parmesan or Romano cheese 1/4 cup torn fresh basil or parsley leaves Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 475°F. 2. Rinse and peel onion. Rinse squash, mushrooms, and cauliflower. Chop vegetables into bite-size pieces, all equal size. 3. In a medium bowl, add oil, salt, pepper, and cut veggies. Stir until veggies are well coated. 4. Spray a baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray. Spread veggies on the baking sheet in a single layer. Bake until veggies are browned at the edges, about 15-20 minutes. 5. During last 10 minutes of baking time, cook pasta following package directions. Reserve 1/2 cup of pasta water. Drain pasta. 6. In a large skillet, add veggies and drained pasta. Heat over medium heat for 2–3 minutes. Stir frequently. Add some of the reserved pasta water to moisten and make a sauce. 7. Transfer mixture to a serving bowl. If using grated cheese and fresh herbs, add now. Serve hot. For a little heat, add in 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Recipe courtesy of Cooking Matters. Everyone loves a parade! ³,WœV Not Just Calories That Make Bellies )DW ´ Dr. Raj Banerjee, DC Dr %DQHUMHHœV Wellness Centre 314-282-3990 GetLeanToday.com Dear Seeker of Health & Fitness, Have you had any of these in your life? Injury, pain, surgery, infection, illness, divorce, financial stress, job stress, poison ivy, giving birth, irritable people, starvation diets, the menstrual cycle, eating junk foods, drugs and medication, excessive cold or heat, staring into computer monitors, and babysitting 15 small children under the age of five for over 13 hours²these are all examples of physical, mental and emotional stress. Your walnut-sized adrenal glands, which sit on top of your kidneys, cannot distinguish among the various stresses that are present in your life²whether they are physical, mental, or emotional. These glands just pump out hormones to counteract stress²any stress! They are ³ILJKW or IOLJKW´ hormones intended to serve us for short periods only. But WRGD\œV stresses are anything but short term so the hormones just keep flowing! If this persists, you can become an ³DGUHQDO W\SH´ of person²one who has either overactive or exhausted adrenals. This is very serious business because your quality of life depends so greatly upon how well your adrenal glands work. Visible symptoms come along with persistent adrenal imbalances. Chief among them is hanging fat in the midsection that sags downward over the belly. Thinned-out arms, legs and buttocks generally accompany this fat because the key hormone that prevails during stress (cortisol) converts these muscles
to sugar in an attempt to create more energy for a continually stressed body. With thinned muscles and large abdomen, adrenal types often have a hard time finding clothes that fit. Moreover, stress hormones in excess will steal protein from the bones, leading to osteoporosis. Sometimes a fat pad develops in the lower neck and upper back called a ³EXIIDOR KXPS ´ Further, fat accumulation in the face gives a round or ³PRRQ IDFH´ appearance, a face that may redden because of weakened blood vessels. So why does the extra fat appear? With all this sugar poring into the bloodstream through the action of stressfighting hormones, the fat-burning hormones of the liver get turned off. Not even high-protein or low-calorie diets will turn them back on again! Then fat accumulates on the belly because of the excess sugar thrown into the blood to meet ³GDQJHUV´ that GRQœW exist (and insulin stores the sugar as fat to keep your blood sugar levels normal). In other words, stress hormones prevent fat burning, and counting calories or eating more protein simply will n ot help. To make matters worse, some adrenal types will try to work off fat with heavy exercise. But this just creates more stress and more stress hormones. Result? Less muscle and even more fat! What a predicament. Fortunately, adrenal imbalances can be corrected to turn muscle-burning adrenal types into fat burners again. But WKDWœV only part of the adrenal story. Exhausted adrenals can run out of anti-inflammatory hormones and enter a chronic stage where pain and inflammation stay in the body for years (e.g., fibromyalgia). Sore muscles GRQœW seem to recover after exercise. Pain triggers stress hormones, which turns off fat burning. A deep, restful sleep becomes impossible. Constant fatigue, mid-

Accidental Cure,
GErman BioLoGicaL mEdicinE: Leading the World in Natural Healing By Simon Yu, MD
O
ver the years, I’ve attended the annual “Medicine Week” conference in Baden Baden, Germany many times. This year I have the good fortune of delivering a presentation at the conference. This unique conference specializes in German Biological Medicine and is one of the most advanced Natural Healing medical conferences in Europe. Medical practitioners from all over the world give lectures and share information with each other. Why is Biological Medicine important to you? Biological medicine is the new frontier of modern medicine. It integrates old ideas proven over hundreds of years of actual use with new ideas of science. It integrates Western Science with Eastern philosophy. And it explores the crossroads between the basic physics of Cosmos and Biology. Biological Medicine examines the fundamental questions of: why are we here (Mind/Body/ Spirituality) and why do we get sick (patho-physiology)? It explains why allopathic medicine does not have the cures for chronic illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, arthritis, fibromyalgia, autoimmune disease, etc. Biological Medicine is based on understanding the uniqueness of each individual even though the symptoms of two people may be the same. It creates treatment plans based on the unique characteristics of each individual’s underlying causes. So, what is Biological Medicine? It is a unique field of medicine from Germany which integrates the modern medical science with the traditional European natural medicine, Homeopathy, Pleomorphism, and philosophies of Traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine. At the conference, we had lectures and demonstrations on homeopathy, herbs, RNA remedies, bio-physics on photon light therapy, Bio-resonance Mora therapy, Biological Terrain, Photon Resonance Therapy, Ionized Oxygen Therapy and many more interesting topics. You may have never heard of most of these medical topics but they can be vitally important to reversing illness and strengthening one’s immune system. Also, one of the major benefits of natural healing is that its methods generally have no, or very little, side effects. Antibiotics, drugs, steroids, chemotherapy or by-pass surgery, main staples for allopathic treatment temporarily relieve the symptoms but never correct the underlying causes for the particular ill-
ness. Almost always the particular condition will come back or manifest into a new medical condition as side effects. Allopathic medicine manages disease by treating symptoms where “cure” is a foreign word. In the Biological Medicinal approach, healing comes from within by assisting one’s immune system to heal oneself. After all it is your own immune system that keeps illness away and keeps you in good health. All that the best physician can do is assist one’s own natural healing process within an individual patient. Biological Medicine understands there are almost always multiple underlying causative factors of illness. It addresses the five most often overlooked areas by medical professionals which are (1) environmental toxins and heavy metals, (2) chronic hidden infections and parasites, (3) unsuspected food allergies, (4) faulty diet and nutrition and (5) interrelated dental-medical complex problems. Biological Medicine also focuses on a constitutional study of the individual, intestinal cleansing, acupuncture meridian assessment, and spiritual harmony. I have been integrating German Biological Medicine with my Internal Medicine practice for more than ten years. The response to Biological Medicine is unique to the individual but highly predictable. It is also most satisfying for the patient because of its gentleness in the healing process. Bread, beer and Natural Healing is not necessarily the right chemistry for the healing process. However, good bread and beer has been an extra incentive to continue my annual trips to Germany to study Biological Medicine at one of Europe’s leading medical conferences. Dr. Simon Yu, M.D. is a Board Certified Internist. He practices Internal Medicine with an emphasis on Alternative Medicine to use the best each has to offer. hile planning a newborn’s first chiropractic adjustment with new parents, having grace is always on the forefront of my mind. Recalling the time I was a new mother myself, I remember the feeling of being overwhelmed. Your tiny miracle takes your breath away, as well as your sleep. Not to mention the slew of family, friends, and nurses coming through the door, all with good intentions, but interrupting your little REM cycle with your babe. Our society has grace with expectant mothers, offering premier parking spots and there is always someone, even strangers, presenting to lift even the lightest objects. When it comes to new parents, somehow that consideration goes out the window, expecting parents to return to work quicker than most developed countries. The United States has zero policies pertaining to guaranteed maternity leave, while most offer 12 weeks. And at the top, Canada offers 50 weeks. Not only is the maternity leave inadequate, but we expect parents to become accommodating, making them conform around the nursing staff’s own routine of tests to get some bonding time and shut eye. Just as you drift to sleep with baby by your side, it never fails a family member knocks on the door or a nurse comes in to take more vital signs. What ever happened to the “village” mentality that it takes one to raise a baby? New parents often feel guilty for reaching out when they need the resources the most. The first month with newborn should be a time of adjustment. When scheduling a chiropractic exam for baby, the parents are given the option to have the
exam at home or in the office. And how long after the birth is completely their choice. We also offer a Connect group, meeting the second Saturday of the month. It is a time when parents can share stories, ask for advice, and something cool starts to happen… a tribe is built. There becomes a place where families rally around and offer meals to new families and exchange the number of the best babysitter they’ve had. Where advice about how to wash those pesky cloth diapers is traded and recipes are passed around. If your family is looking to become more naturally minded, this is a great place to start. Chiropractic Wellness Center offers chiropractic, massage, acupuncture, nutritional counseling, essential oils, ergonomic training, and the hugs are free. They are very clean, almost crisp to the touch and are immediately absorbed by the skin. Pure essential oils are translucent and range in color from crystal clear to deep blue. Try this at home: Squeeze the peel of a ripe orange. The fragrant residue on your hand is full of essential oils. In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant, essential oils have been used throughout history in many cultures for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits. Modern scientific study and trends towards more holistic approaches to wellness are driving a revival and new discovery of essential oil health applications. Essential oils are used for a very wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications. They can be used as a single oil or in complex blends depending on the desired benefit. Essential oils can be used in one of three ways: diffused aromatically, applied to the skin topically or taken internally. a Due to their natural molecular composition, essential oils are easily absorbed by the skin and can be safely applied topically. Application of essential oils can have immediate, localized benefits to the target area of application. They have restorative and

calming properties and can be used effectively with massage and beauty therapy. The chemical structure of essential oils also allows them to be absorbed into the blood stream via the skin for internal benefit throughout the body. A wonderful way to experience essential oils for yourself is to try the AromaTouch(R) Technique. This is a clinical approach to applying essential oils along the energy meridians and visceral contact points of the back and feet to help balance sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems of the body. The AromaTouch(R) Technique improves well-being by reducing physical and emotional stressors and by supporting healthy autonomic function. The technique is simple and intuitive and provides for an unparalleled grounding experience. Using essential oils can be both profoundly simple and life changing at the same time. Working with someone who has used essential oils before will help first-time users have a more beneficial and enjoyable experience. Consult your physician before using essential oils if you are pregnant or under a doctor's care. Going Forward In Our Life
O
ur soul is waiting for us to mirror back to it all its gifts and strengths. As children, we looked to our parents for this kind of mirroring, and in the absence of healthy parents or caregivers, often received inaccurate or faulty mirroring of who we really were. It is up to us now to begin this process of caring for this soul child inside, and no one knows this child better than we do or is more capable than we are for healing and caring for her. Everything we need in order to care for this child is already inside of us, all the wisdom, the truth, the answers we need to have in order to protect and champion this child, it all already exists inside of us. It is up to us to do the healing work, build a relationship with our self that lasts, and this healing journey takes time, effort and energy. The only way out is through, and if we are to attend to this soul child in the very best manner, we have to know in every moment what she needs and how she feels. This is the kind of work that never ends; in order for us to become the persons we were designed to be, we must attend to this child inside every day. This process is like taking vitamins: if we were to wait to take our vitamins until the time we begin to get sick, although they may be of some help, in most cases, we have waited too long to bolster our system- they are not generally as effective as if we would have been taking them daily all along. Such is this soul work too: it is designed to become a way

of life and for those who consider it as such, they find the rewards immense and long-lasting. Each one of us holds a self inside that can teach you not only how to best care for your soul, but also how to get from here to there, how to become what you seek to become in your life. You might experience this part of yourself as a guide, a protector, a friend. However you meet this part of your spirit, know that it is one of the most powerful resources in your healing journey. It will reveal to you a sense of being grounded and balanced, and always show you how to reconnect with your own innermost strength and solidity in your quest to feed your soul. Don’t wait until it becomes necessary to attend to your child inside- continue to connect with her on a daily basis and you will find that your life can change immeasurably. SolutIonS for StreSS: Relieving Emotional Burdens by Amy Davis, M.D.
W
e experience stress in various ways. Injuries, infections, allergies, poor sleep, work, diet, toxins and then there is LIFE! We are bombarded with stressful events throughout our lives, good and bad. Exciting events like a wedding or new baby can be stressful. Difficult experiences result in emotions like fear, sadness, grief and anger. No one goes through life “stress-free” and this results in a build-up of stored emotions. By experiencing the difficult, we appreciate the good. However, chronic stress leads to a variety of physiological changes and emotional burdens that interfere with the ability to heal. Stress of any kind leads to: • Elevated cortisol levels and weight gain • Food cravings • Poor digestion and poor absorption of nutrients • Dysbiosis • Immune weakness • Sympathetic overdrive - chronic fight or flight • Sleep problems • Brain fog and poor concentration Over time, these physical changes can escalate on their own, and eventually create disease. The emotional build-up creates a burden and a feeling of being weighted down. It skews how we see the world. Under stress, we may become defensive, irritable, short tempered and prone to overreact to routine situations. Emotional burden can lead to negative self-talk, perpetuating the stress cycle. Despite many avenues to address emotional
overload – counseling, exercise, relaxation techniques, meditation, deep breathing - we still tend to get STUCK. We often don’t understand why we have such a hard time changing behavior. You can know what to do and still find yourself falling into old dysfunctional patterns, unfulfilled, overwhelmed and struggling to find peace in your life. Why do we get stuck? EMOTIONS ARE STORED IN BODY TISSUES. Releasing those old stored emotions is a key part to regaining balance in your life. Our patients report, on average, a 40-60% reduction in emotional symptoms following each treatment. They have a sense of feeling “lighter”. Behaviors begin to change. Clarity and focus are heightened. Problems become manageable again. Think about children who experience bullying, learning problems, inattention, are overwhelmed or pre-teens with changing hormones? Releasing the emotional burden reduces anxiety, anger, irritability, and mood swings. Children are happier and adults consistently report profound improvements in their emotional well -being from our approach. Let us help you to be happier and healthier. A Garden of Awe and Gratitude by Linda Wiggen Kraft
“To see a World in a Grain of Sand And a Heaven in a Wild Flower, Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand And Eternity in an hour.” William Blake
W
illiam Blake knew awe. His poem shows what happens when a person is captured by the sense of awe. In our gardens we are given the gift of awe. Although awe is felt in many situations, it is most often experienced when outside in nature. In our own gardens the sight of a flower can take our breath away. The patterns and colors can transfix us, bringing a wonder and amazement that overwhelms us. A butterfly that dances in the wind as it flies from flower to flower enthralls us. The taste of a sweet ripe fruit picked fresh from the tree brings an ecstasy of flavor The experience of awe enhances our lives in many ways. Without its life would not be the same. When in awe we feel an overwhelming sense of something larger than ourselves. This sense transforms us so that we see the world and how we want to interact with it in a different way than before the experience. It turns out everyone is hardwired to have experiences of awe. It is universal not matter
Autumn Asters what beliefs or culture. Throughout the ages, awe has been explained in philosophical, spiritual and religious terms. Recently awe has also entered into the scientific realm. The feeling of wonderment and being part of something way bigger than the small self is now being studied by numerous scientists around the globe. One study showed that in our time tight way of living, people actually felt there was more time in their lives after an awe experience. Feelings of
humility, wanting to improve the world and being more open to helping others were common effects of awe. Some of the latest research being conducted is testing the physiological effects of the awe experiences. Feel-good chemicals, like dopamine and others, produced in our bodies are being measured before and after awe-inspiring nature outings. Other markers of how health is affected are also being measured. Whether explained by science or theology, the awe inspiring effects of nature in the wild or in our gardens are some of the most transforming and pleasurable times of our lives. For these experiences we can be grateful. One way to give thanks to the garden for all its gifts, including awe, is to do a walking meditation through the garden letting the sense of awe take place. These walking meditations can take place any time of year. November is a perfect time as the harvest and celebration of the growing year is coming to a close. Stop and pause before walking around the garden. Breath in and out a few times centering attention on the air and light around you, and the energy of the growing earth below. Walk slowly paying attention to the small things not often seen: a fallen leaf, the texture of the bark, the seed head of a flower, the stones on the path. There is a universe in each square foot. With each step send thoughts of gratitude and love into the garden. And in that place of awe let yourself experience, “a World in a Grain of Sand And a Heaven in a Wild Flower, Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand And Eternity in an hour.” Linda Wiggen Kraft is a landscape designer who creates holistic and sustainable gardens. She is also a mandala artist and workshop leader. Visit her blog: www.CreativityForTheSoul.com/blog or website: www.CreativityForTheSoul.com. Contact her at 314-504-4266.

Top dressing your lawn with compost in autumn is key to making it the greenest on the block come spring. Top dressing, an industry secret among ground crews at golf courses, involves the direct application of a layer of compost and/or other organic material to grass. hen it comes to the holidays, many classic American side dish recipes come to mind such as green bean casserole, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, canned cranberry sauce, and the infamous instant mashed potatoes. Some folks really enjoy these holiday favorites. Unfortunately, standard holiday dishes may not be the healthiest as they tend to be loaded with sodium, highly processed grains, refined sugars and modified starches. They also have the ability to leave us fatigued and full. There are healthy alternatives that are pleasant on the taste buds. Healthy Planet readers tend to be savvy to the local foods scene, but it is also important to share these concepts with friends and family who may not know the importance of healthy, locally sourced foods. The more individuals who are concerned about local food increases the potential for small farmers to thrive in their communities. Luckily, you can still source a plethora of local ingredients from Local Harvest, City Greens, The Tower Grove Farmers Market and The Schlafly Winter Market. You can also get veggies directly from La Vista Farm via the Holiday Share: A large bag of fresh locally grown, non certified organic veggies including butternut squash, acorn squash, sweet potatoes, kale, lettuce, peppers, greens, garlic, fresh sage and more. The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. — Gandhi
Plan For A Pet-Safe Thanksgiving Holiday by Dr. Doug Pernikoff, DVM
T
hanksgiving is that wonderful time of year, our woodlands adorned with fall flora, cool weather changes, and the portal for Christmas and New Year's seasons following close behind. What's to Worry?!?!? All that great food! Bad for our waistlines, and maybe, worse for our beloved pets!! So many goodies! The general rule is to go ahead and 'stuff the turkey, not your pets'. Any unfamilar diet items can pose a problem. Excess gas, diarrhea, vomiting and worse! Those are the general signs to watch for. More severe signs like bloody stool, lethargy, and severe conditions like pancreatitis or stomach bloat can ensue. All these issues, aside from making our pets ill, costs lots of money at the emergency veterinary hospitals! Certainly, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And, don't forget to secure the trash cans and trash bags to assure that Fido or Felix do not find their way into all those tasty morsels. Items like turkey and chicken meat can carry organisms like Salmonella, as they sit out and denature. The turkey bones are hollow and splinter easily. Foreign bodies lodged anywhere along the intestinal tract, from mouth to tush, can impose major concerns, leading to surgeries that again, are costly, and can prove life threatening to our babies. Bloat is an animal in it's own right. This syndrome is much more prevalent in mid to large and giant breeds. Excessive water drinking or unusual food items producing gas, both distend the stomach. If it becomes too enlarged, like a water balloon, it tends to turn on its axis, and subsequently, twist off it's own blood supply. There is another issue. The spleen lies along the side of the stomach, and where the stomach goes, so goes the spleen. When the blood supply is twisted off to either, or to both organs, there is immediate tissue death and toxins released that can affect the heart, and worse. These animals tend to get very sick and even can die within hours. If you note your dog's stomach is swelling; if they stand uncomfortably as though in a trance, or if they try to vomit repeatedly, better get to your vet ASAP. Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas organ, which produces both hormones like insulin and glucagon, for sugar metabolism; but, also has cells that produce the enzymes for digestion in our upper small intestines. Fatty foods and other unfamiliar food items can stimulate an overproduction of those enzymes that leak out and actually irritate the very tissues that produce them. Pets can get very ill, very quickly. Again, vomiting
and excessive soft, voluminous stools are not uncommon. Fever, lethargy are also very frequent reports. Most times, your vet will need to hospitalize your pet and treat with fluids, antibiotics and other intestinal protectants. This syndrome tends to be more chronic and can recur with ever so slight a change in palate. This is why most vets will ask owners to minimize the treats provided and keep foods as consistent as need possible. If you decide you wish to change a diet item, please do it with caution, and slowly, over 10-14 days. As a general rule, avoid items like onions, grapes, raisins and other components of our Thanksgiving entree and desserts. Be safe and avoid issues by avoiding feeding practice changes around the holidays! Have a wonderful, family packed event this year. Love to all your pets and to you as well! Losing It...Your Pet’s Healthy Weight by Ava Frick, DVM
T
rying to help your pet lose weight can be frustrating. Traditional “weight loss diets often lack sufficient levels of the vital nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that animals specifically need based on individual idiosyncrasies. The bottom line is that what is on the bag is not enough. Changing how a body recognizes and metabolizes its food (nutrients) needs to be addressed for any successful and healthy weight loss program. Here are the stories of two dogs that have successfully experienced losing weight and enjoying every bite of it!

have walked the Ozark woodlands and meadows for many seasons hunting with Pat Tuholske the wisdom of the wild plants. I gathNaturalist er goldenrod, sumac berries, rose hips, spangle grass, sweet everlasting, pinecones, acorns and other wild offerings to weave into wreaths. I have come to realize that wreath weaving is my spiritual practice. It is my prayer connecting me to nature, to my essence. It brings me peace, single mindedness and a deep healing. My wild wreaths are visionary works of art woven of native grasses, wayside weeds, everlasting flowers, tree bark, lichens, seeds, cones and feathers. As I bind together these gifts of the wild, I envision each as a healing portal into nature.... a pathway lit by the eternal flame of spirit. These wild wreaths are the reflection of the helping spirits in nature. Bringing nature indoors leads us to a richer life when we take the time to reflect on the wonder of the plant. Plants can be wise teachers and faithful friends. It is a rewarding and sacred relationship. Wreaths bless the space they inhabit. Tune into these wheels of plant energy and imagine sacred space around you and within you. Visualize a personal sanctuary and remember your wholeness and harmony. I value the wreath as a tool to understanding change and cultivating transformation. Wreaths are a symbol of the web of life... of all seasons and cycles of life. These are a few of the wild plants I gather for wreaths. Their qualities are based on the healing elements of the plants, native lore, the language of flowers and my own experience:

How To Create A Space Of Calm For Your Child By Vera Gabliani, Ph.D.
I
n these times of rapid changes, uncertainty and heightened fear, many parents worry about how they can help their children to feel safe and secure. One important way of supporting your children is knowing how to create a space of calm and safety. Much like when your child was younger and you would hold them close and rock them till they quieted, so too your deliberate choice to calm yourself whenever you or they are feeling distressed will create this zone of safety for you all. Knowing how to unplug from the world and the constant barrage of information, so much of it fear-based, is a powerful skill that can be modeled for your child. The key is in realizing that your mind is the center point of this turmoil as your over-stimulated brain and then your body gets stuck in the “React mode.” Learning to pause the mind in order to re-center is the way to maintain calm in the midst of it all. One of the most effective ways to access a peaceful state comes from the Institute of HeartMath ™. This group has been research-
ing the power of deliberately connecting in with heart-based emotions to soothe the arousal centers in the brain and body. Here’s how you do it. Place your hand over your heart, take a couple of slow breaths, exhale out tension, and refocus your mind on something that generates a feeling of gratitude or love. This could be something beautiful in nature like a sunset, a loved one’s face, or perhaps the memory of cuddling with a pet. As you breathe and focus on this image and feelings of love and gratitude you naturally shift your brain into a state of “safe” and your body will start to relax. With a bit of practice, you will be able to call upon this image and automatically begin to regain a more peaceful state as the connection between your relaxation centers of the brain and body are strengthened. Just as fear and agitation are contagious, so too is peace and you will be providing your child the space in which to regain a sense of safety and security. Dr. Vera Gabliani has over 20 years of experience in teaching and empowering her clients. She looks forward to talking with you and can be reached at (314) 966-0880.
Why Isn’t My Son Getting Better? Part I of III by Dr. James Feinberg Child Clinical Psychologist
M
ore and more boys are being referred to me because they have not benefited from prior mental health treatment. Are these boys really untreatable or is something else amiss?
In my experience, many so called “treatment failures” can be traced back to an inadequate evaluation. Because most parents don’t know what constitutes an inadequate evaluation, a few examples will suffice. Solely using a rating scale, completed by parents and teachers, to generate a diagnosis (e.g. ADHD) and then writing a prescription(s) or rendering another modality of treatment (e.g. social skills group), is an example of an inadequate evaluation and one that often results in a poor treatment outcome. Rating scales may be objective instruments but those individuals filling them out are not. In fact, even when psychologists are extensively trained in how to rate a certain behavior (e.g. hyperactivity), correlation rates (i.e. agreement) among them rarely exceed 80 %. This is why the results from rating scales must be interpreted cautiously, and why they are merely one of many components of an evaluation. Another example of an inadequate evaluation is jumping to conclusions after only one 45-minute contact with a boy and his parents. Contextual variables greatly influence what is observed in a first interview. For example, meeting a new doctor for the first time often
creates anxiety and restlessness in many boys leading some to erroneously believe that the boy is suffering from ADHD or an anxiety disorder, when he isn’t. The purpose of a first contact should be to establish rapport, gather history, and formulate hypotheses, and nothing more. In contrast, a comprehensive evaluation is a time intensive process that requires many face-to-face contacts with parents and their son as well as with their son individually in addition to consulting with teachers, coaches, and prior mental health providers. The prime objective of a comprehensive evaluation is to gather extensive information about a boy’s behavior or functioning across many settings. The second objective is to integrate all of this information and clarify how this boy is struggling, where he is struggling, and why. The third and last objective is to formulate an accurate assessment (i.e. diagnosis) as well as recommend appropriate modalities of treatment. Successful treatment outcomes are much more likely to occur under such circumstances. So, if your son has been in psychological and/or psychiatric treatment for more than 3-6 months and he has made minimal or no progress; and/or you have consulted more than 2 mental health practitioners with essentially the same outcome, then, it’s clearly time for a comprehensive re-evaluation or 2nd opinion. LAMA in The Lobster Pot by Chris Yonker
A
t last our much anticipated vacation to Colorado! A well earned time to slow down, connect to nature and each other! Tent, camping equipment, bicycles and suitcases packed we headed out for our planned adventure. The drive to our destination of Telluride was uneventful, Missouri familiar, Kansas tedious and Colorado fresh and invigorating with intermittent rain. Upon arriving in Telluride we found a campground and set up the tent and air mattress then headed for a prearranged backup house about 20 mins away in the mountains where we could enjoy a warm shower. Intent on settling into a more organic and less driven pace we returned to our tent and got to bed just after sundown. While our air mattress proved comfortable during the night we realized we hadn't planned for temperatures in the 40s. By the time morning came, despite cuddling intensely, our behinds were frozen and our enthusiasm for camping gone! Down came the tent and back up the hill we went to spend the next couple of nights. Undaunted, we took the bikes to a biking trail for a leisurely bike ride, except just as the trail was proving too challenging for my narrow tires and 66 year old body, cold rain began to fall as my arms and legs began to feel like clay and everything was going into slow motion (signs of elevation sickness). My partner in this adventure headed to the car and I waited about 30 minutes at a gas station before he arrived to rescue me. Exhausted, we retreated again to our backup house in the hills where once again, we warmed up, relaxed and went to sleep at around 8:30 to enjoy the comfort of a warm bed. Except, around 11:30 we were startled out of sleep by the sound of the front door opening and a voice “Hello, is there someone here?” “What the, what the???” Yikes, it turned out a woman who had been staying in the house had returned unexpectedly and while we went back to sleep for the night, we both were getting the feeling that our Colorado trip needed some serious redirection to get on track. 12 hours later, after looking at the map and consulting Hotwire, we decided to head to Pagosa Springs in the four corners area where we booked lodging for 3 nights. Whew! The word Pagosa means “healing waters” and the springs refers to the more than 25 geothermal hot springs located in Ute Indian country. As we headed out of Telluride and toward Pagosa Springs we both sensed a shift in energy, and when we settled into our room a double rainbow lit up the sky as if to welcome us into the flow. The next day we adventured out on a 5 hour, 6 mile hike to a waterfall outside of town that was both challenging and refreshing. We decided to visit the hot springs to soak away the sore-
ness of the hike that evening. What I haven't mentioned up to now is that a much dreamed of destination of mine is Tara Mandala, a 700 acre Tibetan Buddhist retreat center located just outside of Pagosa Springs created by Lama Tsultrim Allione. Lama Tsultrim is an American woman who took vows as a Buddhist nun as a young woman, and now in her

WHAT is THERE foR sTREss & sLEEp?
Q:I heard that Ashwagandha is good for helping to relieve stress. What exactly is it? A: Ashwagandha is an Indian herb, which is known as the “ginseng” of Ayurvedic medicine. Supplementing with ashwagandha over time can improve the body's response to daily stress. Think of it as a “stress-tab” to help you cope with day to day activities, which include environmental, physical and mental changes. It also increases immunity to colds and infections. Many people feel that their energy levels greatly improve while taking ashwagandha. It also has analgesic, or pain-relieving and antiinflammatory properties. This herb may lower blood sugar levels so use with caution if you are diabetic. Q: I take Valerian Root to help me sleep. Is it safe to take long term?
Chris at Tara Mandala 60s is a well known scholar, author and teacher. The focus of her teachings is accessing the divine feminine and psychospiritual inquiry. I had studied with Lama Tsultrim in 2009 and had dreamed of visiting her center ever since. We had tried to get in touch with someone at the center for over a month to arrange a visit but had been unable to get any response because they were in retreat. Even though we were still trying to contact them, we had pretty much given up. It was a beautiful evening as we dipped in springs of varying temperatures, 95, 98, 100, 102, 103. There was a 114 degree spring which we passed up but hadn't found one that was just right when we both saw one we hadn't been to - by the river that said it was 110 and it was called the Lobster Pot. We decided that would be our last stop before calling it a night. So, we got in. Just as we were settling into the pretty hot water a group of 4 or 5 opposite us was getting out. As one lovely woman slithered out I thought I recognized her from yoga and meditation trainings we had done together and I remembered that she was affiliated with Tara Mandala. Coaxed to approach her I introduced myself and she remembered me! Just as I was asking her about her connection to Tara Mandala, much to my surprise and delight I looked over to her right and there was Lama Tsultrim herself, drying off from her soak in the Lobsterpot! The Lama graciously invited us to visit Tara Mandala and have lunch there on our last day in Colorado. Talk about being in the flow! It was magical. Chris Yonker is the owner of YogaSource in Richmond Heights, Missouri. For more information please call 314-645-9642 or visit online at www.stlouisyogasource.com.
A: I believe that valerian root is extremely safe and is a great choice for a sleep aid. This is not an herb that can become habit-forming or addictive. However, I always encourage my
customers to take breaks from a particular supplement so your body does not get used to it and you can eliminate any excess. You may want to try passion flower or skullcap during the breaks to help you sleep and relax. Valerian is also helpful with anxiety because it increases a neurotransmitter called GABA, which helps regulate nerve cells and produces a calming effect. Drugs like Xanax and Valium work the same way but are much stronger. The smell of valerian may not be good, but the benefits are. This herb information is for health education purposes only. Our approach to holistic health includes the entire body and the oral cavity is no exception. We are dedicated to serving our patients and promoting a level of health care that carefully evaluates and reviews the use of dental materials, dental procedures and also offers dietary and nutritional support for each and every individual that is seen in our office.
Did you know that examining the mouth can reveal the presence of illnesses or unstable conditions in other areas of the body? If you feel like you’ve just about exhausted all your options in your search for better health, have your mouth examined with a different approach in mind. Get motivated, get educated, and get ready to participate in a
health-oriented lifestyle that will provide dental alternatives and a nutritional foundation designed to help support your own body’s healing powers.
The focus of holistic dentistry is to consider the mouth as a part of the whole body. We use materials and methods that are more compatible biologically with the body instead of the traditional dental materials. Examples of non-compatible materials are mercury fillings, non-precious heavy metal crowns, bridges and partials or dentures. Alternatives to fluoride are used
for the prevention of cavities. Proper alignment of the jaws and teeth are the foundation of how the body perceives itself in space. The result of improper alignment can result in symptoms of headache, ears ringing, loss of hearing, pain in the head and neck and clenching or grinding of the teeth. Good nutrition is inseparable for good
health. If your diet consists of food and drink made with white flour, sugar and no fresh fruits and vegetables, your body is likely to be acidic with resultant more medical and dental problems. For your dental evaluation contact our office for an appointment by calling 636-4589090 or email at cherryhillsdds@yahoo.com.

ave you noticed that the “holiday season” has crept earlier? I used to think that it began after Thanksgiving but serious shoppers start sooner than that. At the very least, this month seems the proper time to give some thought to what gifts you might purchase for those on your list. I preach the same message every year: as the holiday season approaches, give gifts that say you truly care. Nothing says, “I think you are special” more than a one-of-a-kind, handmade work of art. There’s nothing wrong with shopping at major retail or discount stores, but why not give a unique gift? Original art and fine craft are indeed special gifts, will not be returned to the mall and are probably destined to be treasured heirlooms. This month, it’s easy to find beautiful special gifts. Check out these special shopping opportunities: The 8th annual Holiday Art Show and Sale is presented by Muddy Rivers Arts at The Ethical Society, 9001 Clayton, on November 14-15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Included in the offerings by these professional artist are pottery, glass, fiber and more. Get an idea of what to expect by visiting www.muddyriverarts.org. John Burroughs High School, 755 Price Road
St. Louis Harmony Chorus in Ladue, is the setting for the annual Unique Boutique, a holiday shopping extravaganza. Local and nationally known artists offer handmade items of every imaginable kind to suit every price range and taste: fine jewelry, fun jewelry, scrimshaw, furniture, wearable art, and so much more. The show hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on November 22-23. Find more info by calling 314-993-4040. At Norton’s Fine Art and Framing, a show entitled, “Smaller is Better,” features works no larger than 16 x 20 inches. “Smaller art is easy to hang, easy to gift, and easy on the wallet,” said Mary Norton---and she’s right! The juried works by more than twenty artists are available for sale and
encompass all mediums. Opening on Friday, November 21 with a reception and awards ceremony from 5-8 p.m., the sale actually begins on Saturday, November 22. Check it out at www.NortonsFineArt.com or just go to 2025 S. Big Bend to start your holiday shopping. Still more names on your gift-giving list? On November 28, head over to Third Degree Glass at 5200 Delmar for a Black Friday “Fire” Sale, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. These items have been in the fire-literally! Glass bowls, glasses, objects d’art, jewelry, ornaments and lots more are sure to delight. Everything is priced to sell, so get there early! More info at www.stlglass or call 314-367-4527.
Home Remedies for Health and Wellness

eing one plane, train or automobile from the next deadly infection that is now traveling worldwide has greatly heightened our attention and concerns for maintaining a strong immune system – our true, best and only defense. If this is also running parallel with economic distress, then families need the easiest and least expensive methods to health and wellness. I offer 3 protocols, all of which work well alone or together. First, an evening cleansing bath: 3 pounds of Epson Salts, 2 pounds of Baking Soda and 1 quart Hydrogen Peroxide mixed in the warmest water that you can tolerate. Remain in the water 45 minutes, continuing to add more warm water throughout, and rest and relax. In the first 20 minutes, the body is adjusting to the water and the chemicals. During the second 20 minutes, the body begins to work and cleanse with the water, oxygen, minerals, salts and elevated PH. You will be tired and will sleep deeply after this wonderful internal detox. Your pain level should drop, and please dress warm to sleep well. Twice a week would be good, or as often as needed.
Secondly, a handkerchief or mask (from Home Depot or Lowes) laced or sprinkled with Thieves Oil from Young Living Essential Oils. To not alarm people, you may prefer the handkerchief, but you might tell others that you are trying to protect everyone by wearing the mask. This is especially helpful when you are around crowds. And, the Thieves Oil has a pleasant aroma, so you won’t be repelling anyone. Thieves Oil is a blend of Cloves, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary having properties that are anti-bacteria, anti-fungal, anti-microbial, and antiviral. Thirdly, a custom blend of frequencies in patch form can offer energetic support. Three patches that I strongly recommend are #1. Virus, #2. Hemorrhagic Fevers, and #3. Enhanced Immune Support. These patches are worn on the left shoulder for three days each. Each sleeve holds 10 patches lasting one month. More information on these and other supports are on our website: watsu1.com. Of course, gift memberships in the many fine ARTful institutions in St. Louis make ideal gifts that continue to give throughout the year, often offering the recipients special privileges. The St. Louis Art Museum, the Contemporary Art Museum, the St. Louis Symphony, Dance St. Louis, the Muny, Missouri Botanical Garden, Stages St. Louis, the Fox, the Touhill -–to name just a very few—offer memberships, single tickets or season ticket subscriptions that make welcomed gifts. And don’t forget the delightful array of unusual gift items available in museum gift shops! Your purchases there also help the institutions---talk about stretching the impact! The bottom line is that your holiday shopping can make a difference, make a statement, and generate revenue in the immediate community. When you’re buying a gift for someone special (or for yourself), please support local artists. A tip of the hat to St. Louis Harmony Chorus: This group of local women will represent our region in the International Chorus Competition for Sweet Adelines International in the first week of November. The competition, held in Baltimore, Maryland this year, includes just 33 of the top choruses from seven countries around the world. Worldwide, 650 choruses compete in hopes of being one of the 33 chosen to compete for the worldwide title. Wow! St. Louis Harmony Chorus has been training singers and entertaining the community since 1961. We’re rooting for you, ladies— and St. Louis is proud of you! Stlharmony.org.
Red Light Therapy
Photo Rejuvenation or Red Light Therapy
is the use of light to create an anti-aging effect on the skin and is quickly becoming recognized as one of the safest, fastest and most affordable ways to achieve younger, more vibrant looking skin. Physicians and aestheticians agree, it is the most powerful and effective way to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the skin. Visible red (620nm-700nm) light shows at least 24 different positive changes at a cellular level. Red light penetrates into the derma layer of the skin, energizing the cells, thereby helping to create collagen, which helps to plump up the skin, and elastin, which helps to firm the skin and diminish fine lines and wrinkles.
Red Light Therapy Benefits: • Restores skin cells • Reduces fine lines, scars, acne, wrinkles, stretch marks and age spots • Stimulates collagen synthesis • Smooths and reduces cellulite deposits
• Treats seasonal affective disorders • Increases moisture retention • Increases blood circulation • Increases lymphatic system activity • Decreases skin flaws like Psoriasis, Eczema and Rosacea
PAIN RELIEF: • Herniated and Bulging Discs • Osteoarthritis • Fibromyalgia • Joint and Muscle pain • Inflammation • Nerve and Sports injuries • Neck pain and stiffness • Wounds and damaged skin • Kills bacteria
