Family Stories Of The Sea
T
o celebrate my grandson's first birthday this summer, we decided to treat him to his first trip to the ocean. Great grandma (GG) lives in Florida on the Atlantic coast just south of the Kennedy Space Center. They call it the Space Coast and we were excited to get Jackson’s feet in the sand for the first time. We loaded up our rental van from Budget (didn’t want to put the miles and wear and tear on our old van). And with me, my wife Niki, my daughters Natalie and Stephanie and grandson Jackson, were off to return to the sea. For a dozen years we took our family to the beach when the kids were little. There is something so wonderful about a family trip to the beach. Spending quality time in the van driving long distance, playing games and the kids watching videos or reading books. It came with it’s challenges of course, stuck in a vehicle for hours and hours and hours. We did break up our stay with a night in Chattanooga at the Country Inns and Suites (one of our favorite spots). On this trip, 1-year-old Jackson was about as good as any kid can be strapped down in a car seat for hours on end. When we were kids, there were no car seats. Matter of fact, when we were really little, there were no seat belts. We roamed around the back seat and we played the cow game as the landscape whizzed by outside. Count the cows on your side of the car. Each cow is worth one point. Horses are worth 5 points each. And cemeteries wipe out your points. We would play this for hours and hours with of course some sort of dispute along the way. “Hey, that wasn’t a horse, it was a donkey!” “No it wasn’t I get 5 more points.”

October, 2014 “Saw a cow over there by that old truck.” “That was a dog.” “No it wasn’t... mom, Billy is cheating.” Jackson was too young to play the Cow Game, but he wasn’t too young to let us know when it was time to stretch at a rest stop. It’s a good thing he is great eater. Man can that boy put away the puffs. Luckily we made it to GG’s house just in time for dinner. Jackson’s first time digging his toes in the sand went well with a few looks of pleasure and wondering what it was between his toes. The pounding surf was another experience. The water was fine, but the sound of the surf freaked him out a bit. A calmer ocean on a different day would have been much better. But he liked looking at the sea gulls and tiny water birds as they scampered up and down the shore as the foam came in and out. My daughter Stephanie spent much of her time during the week in the ocean playing in the waves. She said it is so calming and therapeutic. Wave after wave, soothing and calm at times and then a breaker takes you down if you are not looking. So much like life. I got one of those straps that holds your glasses on your head so you don’t lose them in the waves. Decided to wear them all the time now. No lost glasses. Jackson began to walk more on the trip. So much energy getting released. His mother Natalie is so keen to his every need. She is such a great mom. I am so proud of her. GG reads to Jackson as the sun sets over the lagoon pond behind her condo. NiNi (my wife Grandma Niki) took Jackson out earlier to feed the family of turtles who live in the pond. The ducks came over for a snack too, but the big turtle snapped at their webbed feet and scared them away. The manatees lumber along in the canal nearby amid the moored boats. Many of the gentle giants bearing the scars from encounters with propellers. Known also as “Sea Cows” the sea creatures seem so happy to just float along, slowly submerging for a moment and then rising again for a breath of air. The ocean, the beach, the salt air, the family time all make for experiences we will never forget. We are hoping to start Jackson on this tradition we found so wonderful for so many years with our children -- times that will never be forgotten and often remembered in stories handed down from generation to generation. Missouri College Offers Several Programs Focused On Health & Wellness Careers
W
ith so much interest in healthy lifestyles today, there are many avenues someone who would like to enter this field could pursue professionally. Missouri College offers several programs focused on healthcare and wellness careers as well as other fields. Whether you’re looking for hands-on involvement in caring for patients’ healthcare needs or in work that supports those needs in an office setting, Missouri College can help you develop the essential skills and knowledge you need to get started. Their programs put you in settings that simulate real world environments to help you experience what the workplace is really like. And you can learn from instructors who specialize in what they teach – including many practicing professionals. Areas that are especially relevant for those who want to focus on wellness are the school’s Massage Therapy, Fitness Training, and Occupational Therapy Assistant programs. They not only teach the range of techniques and skills needed to do the job but also help prepare you to work one-on-one with people, assessing their needs and adapting your therapies to the individual. This requires empathy, good listening skills, and confidence in your judgment and abilities – all qualities Missouri College can help you acquire through hands-on learning activities, clinical experience, and supportive, knowledgeable instructors.
Significant growth is expected in those fields through 2022. The need for Occupational Therapy Assistants is projected to increase by 41%, with 23% higher demand for Massage Therapists, and 13% for Fitness Trainers.* In addition to the popular wellness fields, Missouri College offers many other healthcare and business programs. The school has been providing career-focused training and education for over 45 years, preparing thousands of people for challenging and rewarding professional opportunities. Missouri College is located at 1405 S. Hanley Road in Brentwood, Missouri. I’m Tired All The Time. Will Green Coffee Bean Extract Give Me Energy?
Q: I am tired all of the time. I have been under a tremendous amount of stress lately and I am worried that I am just worn out. I take a good multivitamin but that is not really making me feel better. What can I do? A: If you are exhausted and overwhelmed, you may have adrenal fatigue. The adrenal glands sit on top of your kidneys. These glands secrete cortisol, a stress hormone. High levels of stress can keep your adrenals in a state of constant alert, causing them to become fatigued and can cause what is called “burnout”. This can leave you extremely tired for no apparent reason. Depriving yourself of sleep, and/or using stimulants like caffeine, nicotine or sugar can also put you into adrenal fatigue. Other symptoms are brain fog, food cravings, unexplained weight changes and moodiness. There are a few things you can do to reverse this problem. Eat a diet high in lean protein, fruits and vegetables and healthy fats. Vitamins C and B5 are important. Adaptogenic herbs help to support proper function and to produce cortisol in natural patterns. Some of the best are ashwagandha and rhodiola. Licorice root has also been proven to be very helpful. Q: Will green coffee bean extract give me a lot of energy?
A: Green coffee beans are raw or unroasted coffee beans and are extremely low in caffeine. So, if it is the caffeine high you are looking for, you won't find it with green coffee beans. This is what it will do for you. The extract contains polyphenols, including chlorogenic acid, which have antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. These help the body neutralize free radicals. Studies have shown that by taking green coffee bean extract 30 minutes before meals you can lose an average of 2 pounds per week. The chlorogenic acid stimulates metabolism and instructs the body to convert fat reserves into energy. It also reduces the absorption of glucose, which prevents the liver from absorbing fat. If is is extra energy that you are looking for, you might try ginseng, rhodiola, bee pollen, B12, wheat grass, or a combination of any of these. Fifth annual Green Ball to Benefit EarthWays Center of the Missouri Botanical Garden
T
he fifth annual Green Ball will roll out the green carpet in the Delmar Loop to welcome the greenminded movers and shakers of St. Louis for a night of fun philanthropy. Presented by Moonrise Hotel, Green Ball 2014 will be held from 7-11 p.m., Friday, Nov. 14, in celebration of all things green. Proceeds from the gala will benefit the EarthWays Center, a division of the Missouri Botanical Garden that promotes sustainability through environmental education and improving the built environment. Ticket prices are $40 for Garden members and $50 for nonmembers. Tickets include locally-sourced and organic appetizers and seasonal cocktails, prepared by the Eclipse Restaurant’s award winning staff, plus complimentary bar service. Swinging hot jazz by Miss Jubilee and visually stunning Vivant entertainers roaming amongst the crowd create a “mod autumnal” theme. To highlight the importance of making events “green,” the ball will be zero waste. Brochures will be printed on recycled paper, food waste will be composted and décor will be ecofriendly. Paper and glass waste will be recycled, and St. Louis’ nationally known “best tasting” tap water will be offered to guests, rather than bottled water. Free valet parking will be provided to carpools of four or more riders. “We’re so pleased to partner with the Moonrise for this fifth annual Green Ball,” said Glenda Abney, director of the EarthWays Center. “It’s a fun and unique way to raise sustainability awareness in St. Louis. It’s also a great way to showcase the various Moonrise green building features. Green Ball guests will enjoy an unforgettable evening, while helping the EarthWays Center demonstrate how their choices affect the environment." Come dressed in your eco-fashion finest and snap a picture in the fun interactive photo booth. “Creative green” attire is strongly encouraged. An expert panel of fashion and style judges will award “Best Dressed” prizes including an overnight stay at the Moonrise Hotel and more to three impressive
winners. Whether it’s recycled, handmade, ecofriendly, vintage or just plain green, designs of all kinds will be in the spotlight. The idea for the Green Ball developed five years ago, when the Moonrise Hotel decided to stage an event to celebrate those “living green” in the St. Louis area and draw attention to local green businesses and organizations. The EarthWays Center seemed a natural beneficiary. The Moonrise Hotel itself employs extensive green efforts such as hotel-wide recycling and composting, the first hotel-bar open-air roof in America made entirely of solar panels, and an electric vehicle car charging station. During the event, guests may purchase raffle tickets for premium baskets of their choice, including eco-friendly home goods, gift certificates to local businesses and restaurants, and energy efficiency items like a home energy audit. All proceeds from the raffle will benefit the EarthWays Center. To purchase your Green Ball 2014 tickets, please visit the event webpage or call 314577-5118. Additional event information may also be found on Facebook. The Green Ball is hosted by EarthWays Center of the Missouri Botanical Garden. Presenting sponsorship is provided by Moonrise Hotel. If you are interested in sponsoring the Green Ball or making a raffle donation please contact Joyce Gorrell at joyce.gorrel@ MOBOT.org or 314-577-0220. While the Missouri Botanical Garden’s mission is to protect and preserve plants, the EarthWays Center specifically focuses on helping people learn to live more sustainably. EarthWays offers more than 20 programs and projects on sustainable living and learning for students, educators, business and community leaders, municipalities and green building professionals and contractors in Missouri throughout the year. More than 45,000 households in the St. Louis region hold memberships to the Missouri Botanical Garden. Memberships begin at $65 ($60 for seniors) and offer 12 months of free general admission for two adults and all children ages 12 and under, plus exclusive invitations and discounts. Members help support the Garden’s operations and world-changing work in plant science and conservation. Learn more at www.mobot.org/membership.

Trees Work!
Freezing Up Summer Produce by Kari Hartel, RD, LD Program Coordinator, Cooking Matters, Operation Food Search
A
s fall gets into full swing, you may be wondering about what to do with all of your summer produce. Americans throw away hundreds of dollars’ worth of food every year, with the majority of that being produce that spoils too quickly, or dairy products. However, you do not have to be a part of that statistic. With a few simple strategies, you can make sure you do not end up throwing out all of that beautiful summer and fall produce. Your best bet to avoid wasting fruits and veggies? Freeze them! Most types of produce maintain their quality when frozen for approximately six months for fruit and 12 months for vegetables. Fruits do not require much pre-preparation before you freeze them – you can basically freeze them directly. However, most vegetables require you to blanch them. Blanching is briefly cooking vegetables in boiling water (the boiling time varies with the type of produce, but is generally less than 3 minutes) and then immediately placing the boiled veggies into an ice bath—a big bowl of ice water. This stops the cooking process. Blanching vegetables slows down the loss of color, texture, flavor, and beneficial nutrients that can occur during freezing. While you can freeze vegetables without blanching them first and they are safe to eat, their quality may diminish over time, making them less appealing and not as nutritious. To freeze fruits and vegetables that you’ve grown in your garden, received from a friend, or purchased at your local grocery store, follow these easy steps: 1. Rinse the produce and pat it dry. 2. Prep your produce according to this guide: Bell peppers: Cut out stem, remove seeds, cut into 1/2-inch pieces, blanch 2-3 minutes. Berries: Remove stems. Broccoli & cauliflower: Cut into 1- to 1 1/2inch florets, blanch 3 minutes.
Carrots: Peel, cut into 1/4-inch slices, blanch 2 minutes. Cherries: Remove stems and pit. Greens: Remove any tough stems and ribs, chop, blanch 2-3 minutes. Green beans: Trim stem ends. Mangoes: Cut off skin, cut fruit off pit, cut into 1-inch pieces. Nectarines, peaches, and plums: Remove pit, cut into sixths. Peas: For edible pods, remove tough stems. If using shelling peas, remove from pod. Blanch 1-2 min. Strawberries: Remove stem and hull, cut large berries in half. Summer squash: Cut into 1/2-inch slices, blanch 2-3 minutes. Tomatoes: Remove core. Winter squash: Cut in half, remove seeds and stringy membrane. Instead of blanching, place cut-side down on baking sheet coated with nonstick cooking spray, bake at 400 degrees F until tender,35-50 minutes. Let cool, scoop squash into bowl, removing skin. Mash with fork, cool completely. 3. Place the produce on a baking sheet (in a single layer) and freeze. 4. Remove the frozen produce from the freezer and transfer it to freezer-safe ziptop bag or an airtight plastic container. Operation Food Search is hosting a drop-in Open House from 11:30 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 1st to kick off its 90 Days of Giving campaign. he St. Louis High Performance Building Initiative’s 25x20 Voluntary Energy Benchmarking Campaign is challenging buildings in our region to benchmark their energy use. What is energy benchmarking? It’s the process of measuring a building’s energy consumption and comparing its performance to similar buildings. Benchmarking is the first step to conserving energy and money. You know the saying- you can’t manage what you don’t measure! Each year St. Louis HELP diverts over 115.6 tons of waste from landfills and distributes over $2.1 Million in medical equipment ($1.26 Million to program beneficiaries and $892,000 to partner organizations). Our program continues to be a solution to a problem faced by individuals and their caregivers in the metropolitan St. Louis area. The uninsured, underinsured, disabled, elderly and their caregivers are particularly at risk of facing barriers to accessing Home Medical Equipment. These vulnerable populations typically experience reduced access to health care services, demonstrating a continuing need for a strong, viable safety net. One of the greatest gaps in services with the recent cuts in Medicare and Medicaid funding and the dramatically increasing cost of private health insurance is accessing HME. t. Louis HELP’s primary mission is to provide any individual in need with access to free Home Medical Equipment (HME) through our recycle and reuse program enabling them to live as independently as possible and remain contributing members of the community. Our secondary mission is to divert unnecessary waste from area landfills by providing a local resource for the reuse or recycling of unwanted HME. Equipment recipients experience physical and mental changes in their everyday lives such as safety, mobility, lessened depression and increased independence. Caregivers are often an overlooked group that benefits from St. Louis HELP. We provide the HME they need to make their job easier and safer for them and their loved ones. In addition to collecting and distributing throughout the year St. Louis HELP will conduct a metro-wide Equipment Drive on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at twelve designated Walgreens sites. Annually, St. Louis HELP is serving over 5,000 persons and provides a local resource and advocate for waste reduction and recycling by diverting tons of unwanted medical equipment waste from area landfills. Find Ourselves Again

or many people, being in touch with the true adult self inside is an unfamiliar experience. Most people, before deep emotional healing work, are very familiar with the wounded child inside, and have lived the majority of their existence operating out of this wounded child. Despite being uncomfortable or limiting in most cases, many people prefer to stick with this familiar or “known” way of living, despite it no longer working for them in many of these cases. Our true self, often referred to as our “soul self” exists in a part of us that is not accessible through language or logic. Talk therapy talks to the “left brain” part of us that is already smart enough to know that we should not eat the whole bag of cookies, and spends an inordinate amount of time talking about feelings, rather than actually assisting clients with truly feeling and releasing their feelings. It cannot do so because the soul does not speak in language: it speaks in symbols, perception and so on- so it is like trying to communicate in two different languages...there will always be a disconnect, and the information gets lost in translation. As such, in order to get to the source of our distress or pain that keeps us stuck in destructive or unhelpful patterns present day, we have to use techniques to access the source of the pain, which is only accessible through our right brain. That is why imagery, art, music, dream work and many other right brain techniques

are so powerfully effective: they are the language of the soul, and give us direct access to the material we need in order to heal- our feelings. In order to gain access to our true self again, we have to want to heal and live life differently, and the journey to this point comes in different ways. For some, it is only when they have tried everything else ending back up in the same destructive patterns, that they realize there has to be another way. Others may contract a life-threatening health condition and come to realize they need to begin their healing process. For others, their lives begin to unravel with the ending of a marriage or relationship, or have an addiction that is out of control, or recognize that their kids are acting out destructively. It is an individual decision to begin one’s healing journey or not. Yet if you truly want to be free and fully alive, the only way out is in. ³,WœV Not Just Calories That Make Bellies )DW ´ Dr. Raj Banerjee, DC Dr %DQHUMHHœV Wellness Centre 314-282-3990 GetLeanToday.com Dear Seeker of Health & Fitness, Have you had any of these in your life? Injury, pain, surgery, infection, illness, divorce, financial stress, job stress, poison ivy, giving birth, irritable people, starvation diets, the menstrual cycle, eating junk foods, drugs and medication, excessive cold or heat, staring into computer monitors, and babysitting 15 small children under the age of five for over 13 hours²these are all examples of physical, mental and emotional stress. Your walnut-sized adrenal glands, which sit on top of your kidneys, cannot distinguish among the various stresses that are present in your life²whether they are physical, mental, or emotional. These glands just pump out hormones to counteract stress²any stress! They are ³ILJKW or IOLJKW´ hormones intended to serve us for short periods only. But WRGD\œV stresses are anything but short term so the hormones just keep flowing! If this persists, you can become an ³DGUHQDO W\SH´ of person²one who has either overactive or exhausted adrenals. This is very serious business because your quality of life depends so greatly upon how well your adrenal glands work. Visible symptoms come along with persistent adrenal imbalances. Chief among them is hanging fat in the midsection that sags downward over the belly. Thinned-out arms, legs and buttocks generally accompany this fat because the key hormone that prevails during stress (cortisol) converts these muscles
to sugar in an attempt to create more energy for a continually stressed body. With thinned muscles and large abdomen, adrenal types often have a hard time finding clothes that fit. Moreover, stress hormones in excess will steal protein from the bones, leading to osteoporosis. Sometimes a fat pad develops in the lower neck and upper back called a ³EXIIDOR KXPS ´ Further, fat accumulation in the face gives a round or ³PRRQ IDFH´ appearance, a face that may redden because of weakened blood vessels. So why does the extra fat appear? With all this sugar poring into the bloodstream through the action of stressfighting hormones, the fat-burning hormones of the liver get turned off. Not even high-protein or low-calorie diets will turn them back on again! Then fat accumulates on the belly because of the excess sugar thrown into the blood to meet ³GDQJHUV´ that GRQœW exist (and insulin stores the sugar as fat to keep your blood sugar levels normal). In other words, stress hormones prevent fat burning, and counting calories or eating more protein simply will n ot help. To make matters worse, some adrenal types will try to work off fat with heavy exercise. But this just creates more stress and more stress hormones. Result? Less muscle and even more fat! What a predicament. Fortunately, adrenal imbalances can be corrected to turn muscle-burning adrenal types into fat burners again. But WKDWœV only part of the adrenal story. Exhausted adrenals can run out of anti-inflammatory hormones and enter a chronic stage where pain and inflammation stay in the body for years (e.g., fibromyalgia). is the use of light to create an anti-aging effect on the skin and is quickly becoming recognized as one of the safest, fastest and most affordable ways to achieve younger, more vibrant looking skin. Physicians and aestheticians agree, it is the most powerful and effective way to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the skin. Visible red (620nm-700nm) light shows at least 24 different positive changes at a cellular level. Red light penetrates into the derma layer of the skin, energizing the cells, thereby helping to create collagen, which helps to plump up the skin, and elastin, which helps to firm the skin and diminish fine lines and wrinkles.
Red Light Therapy Benefits: • Restores skin cells • Reduces fine lines, scars, acne, wrinkles, stretch marks and age spots • Stimulates collagen synthesis • Smooths and reduces cellulite deposits
• Treats seasonal affective disorders • Increases moisture retention • Increases blood circulation • Increases lymphatic system activity • Decreases skin flaws like Psoriasis, Eczema and Rosacea

Accidental Cure,
Back to the Future by going Back to the Past By Simon Yu, MD
T
he 42nd Annual Cancer Control Society’s Cancer Convention (CCSCC) was held in Los Angeles August 30 – September 1, 2014. This convention reminded me of watching the popular movie, “Back to the Future” from the 1980’s with Michael J. Fox. A time-travelling car changed his character’s future by coming/going back to the past into the present with a twisted story to re-write his life. The movie was clever, funny, and a complicated story that only Hollywood could come up with. The history of cancer therapy told at the convention is similar to “Back to the future” except it was not funny. Yes, the story is complicated with dark portrayals of human greed, ignorance, and the need to control. To understand the history of cancer therapy, you need to go back at least 100 years to know why current cancer therapy is limited to mainly surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. I don’t have to tell the whole story of Flexner’s report published in 1910, sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation. After Flexner’s report, there were sweeping reforms in medical education which forced the closures of homeopathic, naturopathic, and electrotherapy schools. The emphasis was placed on training physicians in a scientific manner and strengthening the state regulation of medical licensure to improve the quality of care. The alternative medical community felt Flexner’s Report deliberately suppressed naturopathic and homeopathic medicine in the name of science and quality of medical education. There were numerous books written on this subject. We are in a time of crisis for cancer treatments and the medical care for cancer since medical science and training have been hijacked by pharmaceutical companies. With our aging population, our costly modern medical system, which excels in emergency care, might collapse on its own burden of inefficient bureaucracy, compounded by selfinterested pharmaceutical and medical organizations. Millions of people are desperately looking for alternative, safer, less-expensive medical care for cancer therapies. They are seeking the medical therapies that are effective, make sense, and can be a part of the healing process. They are not interested in passively taking chemo or radiation and hope for the best. There has been only a slightly improved survival rate for stage IV metastatic cancer over the last 50 years. Once patients realized they do not have the freedom to choose other alternative medical care, they started grass roots organized movements. One of the groups is the Cancer Control Society based in Los Angeles, California. I attended the 42nd Annual Cancer Convention. About 40 speakers from numerous fields in alternative medicine presented. I presented my hypothesis on the connection between parasites (protozoa) and cancer metabolism, and how to detect parasites based on acupuncture meridian assessment. I also introduced a new class of cancer therapy, a patented parasite medication, 3-bromo pyruvate (3-BP) developed by Young- Hee Ko, Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins Medical School. The politics of medicine within Johns Hopkins sacked her after she published her life time work on 3-BP. 3-BP eradicates hepatocellular liver cancer in rats by successfully blocking the cancer mitochondrial hexokinase metabolism. At the conference, many speakers addressed
many successful, promising therapies that were denied, denounced, and even suppressed by the FDA in the name of protecting the American public. Many speakers came from Europe and from cancer clinics in Mexico where the alternative cancer therapies were not suppressed. Most physicians and the public have limited access to alternative cancer therapies in the USA. The wealthy go to Europe and the poor and middle class go to Mexico to receive alternative cancer therapies. The atmosphere of the conference was charged with a critical viewpoint of government policies. It was antagonistic to the pharmaceutical industry and the allopathic medical establishment for their main emphases on surgery, chemo, radiation therapy, and outrageously expensive genetic based immunetherapy. The Cancer Control Society is trying to take you back to the future of cancer therapy by bringing out some of the old, forgotten, and suppressed therapies. It is also bringing out the latest cutting edge cancer therapies to the medical professions and the public. It is like going back to the Future by going back to the Past. This convention inspires me to modify and update my previous lecture on the history of medicine.

Perfect................... .........Persimmons. story & photo by Linda Wiggen Kraft
I
t’s that time of year again in my backyard. A perfect persimmons harvest is going on. The mature native persimmon tree (diospyros virginiana), maybe 90 years old and 40 feet tall, is sharing its beautiful sweet peach colored fruits. Starting in September this tree drops its ping-pong size fruits onto the ground when they are ripe. Each day there are between twenty and fifty fruits to pick up. This goes on for weeks. It is a race between me, the insects and other wildlife to be the first to get the fruit. I pick up the sweet fruit and put most of it in a plastic bag destined for the freezer. A few always end up in my mouth. The native persimmons have lots of seeds that I spit out after sucking off the pulp. When I have enough persimmon fruits gathered, I make a pulp. I take the thawed fruits, put them in a strainer and push against the pulp and seeds. The pulp goes into a bowl and the seeds stay behind. It takes some time to do this, but the results are worth it. My old tree that bears fruit year after year. My
neighbors who let wild things grow, fortunately let a seed from my tree grow into what is now about a 15 feet tall tree. I’m not sure of its age, maybe 5 to at most 10 years old. Last year as I looked out my second floor window I noticed peach colored fruit glowing on their tree. I see persimmons there again this year. I am happy that another native tree is growing in my neighborhood. I hope my tree’s seeds will find other homes where they can grow. Fortunately native persimmon trees are available at some local nurseries for anyone to plant. There are plenty of recipes for persimmon treats. Here is a favorite from a friend. It is especially good at Thanksgiving, when we can give thanks for the wonderful native fruit trees that
October, 2014 have grown here for hundreds, if not thousands, of years and still grow in our gardens.

he Earth is a big place to keep clean; but even little steps help complete the task. This is the rationale behind “The Earth, The Alphabet and Me,” a book designed to help even the youngest of kids to adopt an eco-friendly mindset and start taking care of the environment. Local sisters Jenny Donaldson, an art educator, and Christine Pesout, a corporate communications consultant, created the book by combining their talents and interests. “We’ve been talking about writing something for a long time,” says Donaldson, “and this topic is one we have both been passionate about for many years. I’ve worked with children of different ages and know they are both eager to be involved in a cause and capable of doing so.” The two chose an easy-to-follow alphabetical and rhyming pattern to share 26 tips that children of preschool through elementary age can adopt and share with their friends and families. Original illustrations are collages made from leftover wallpaper scraps, with an emphasis on interesting, organic textures. Some activities outlined in the book can be accomplished independently, allowing kids to get started right away on their new mission, rather than waiting on help from
an adult. Others do require some supervision and support. “It’s great to be a part of empowering kids, and to help them become aware of and take care of their environment,” says Pesout. “Taking one or two regular actions when you’re young can lead to a lifelong accumulation of choices in a certain direction, and of course, we like helping to influence the positive ones.” One of the main goals of the book is to show the variety of ways one can help. “It can be overwhelming when you think about all that needs to be done,” says Donaldson. “We want children to realize that even making small changes to their daily habits can have a big impact over time. For example, turning off the faucet while brushing teeth can save 8 gallons of water per day, which amounts to over 2900 gallons a year. When kids hear this, they feel empowered!” “The Earth, The Alphabet and Me” can be purchased at https://www.etsy.com/shop/Unboxedart. Enter coupon code HPlanet14 to receive 10% off your order. Are You Ready To Heal? by Jamila Ownes-Todd, ND

the purpose of the illness, we can now release it from our being. Healing starts there. As you are working through health challenges, here are a few considerations: 1. Why did I create this imbalance? 2. What purpose is it serving me? 3. How will I heal from this illness? 4. Am I ready to heal?
I
llness serves a purpose. Let me first start off by saying, you do not have to be sick. A sickness is a reflection of where you are in your present physical state and does not have to hang around longer than it is needed. How long is it needed? Only you will know! We are powerful beings with the even greater power to heal. The choices we make in our healing are often shortsighted when we are sick. That is why you seek guidance from someone else. Whether it is your Medical Doctor, Chiropractor, Acupuncturist, Massage Therapist, Naturopathic Doctor or your local neighborhood herbalist; we (as practitioners) tap in to your healing, with your permission. You invite us in to assist with your healing path but you are responsible for leading the way. You are the key to your success. You hold the cure in your DNA. But this cure can appear to be hidden, buried even, when illness has set in. Our thought process is readily compromised when we have physical and emotional imbalances. Therefore, we must sit in peace in order to move forward in healing In your choice to exist, you make the choice to heal. If your illness has served a purpose of reconnecting you with another being, or encouraging you in speaking your truth, commanding respect in your community or by reuniting you with healing foods, this purpose proves valid. After acknowledging

The Creatures Of Halloween Night: Should We Fear Them or Admire Them? by Dr. Doug Pernikoff, DVM
H
alloween is a different sort of celebration today in contrast to its more sinister beginnings in very early Irish/Celtic culture. This period of the year represented a change from sunny, warm and long lighted summer days to the onset of cooler, darker and shorter days of fall. This time was also recognized as the annual witching time. Halloween was seen as the time of the year when those souls passed would return to walk the earth again. But, it was not until the mid to late 1800s, when a large number of Irish folk immigrated to America, that we began to adopt and redefine the celebration of Halloween as something more fun than sinister. It was also a human invention to incorporate certain animals into the celebration of Halloween. Black cats, wolves, bats, owls and large spiders all play a significant role in enriching our present day Halloween. How is it that these particular animals have come forward as representations of this special October 31st event. The incorporation of the black cat, typically with bright, reflective yellow eyes, represents the oldest animal relationship to Halloween. In the far past, witches were thought able to transform themselves into black cats, and thereby, are a likely subject to associate with our modern day Halloween. All these animals mentioned are particularly capable hunters of the night. They all possess special physical or physiological features that allow them to move almost silently in the darkness and furtively stalk with torpedo like efficiency, their poor prey victims. They are all referred to as ‘high end predators’, performing at the very top of their food chains. They use their heightened senses of night vision, hearing and smell to detect and successfully stalk their prey. Owls also have unique feathers lining their wing margins that silence the sounds of their flight, allowing them to attack unsuspecting prey species without detection. Bats are extremely special mammals, being the only mammal species truly able to fly due to the unusual modifications in their hands, with webbing developed in association with extended finger bones, creating a leather like wing structure. I would bet that most people fearful of bats today would make reference to all the great horror films of our childhood, wherein the Dracula monster, representing the walking dead, fed voraciously on the blood of humans, and would make his escape by transforming into a bat. In fact, there are hundreds of bat species in our ecosystems worldwide, yet only one species, the ‘vampire’ bat, will search out mammalian blood meals. Nonetheless, due to their association with nighttime hunting and again, near silent flight, we have come to fear them as something supernatural and representative of evil! And, don’t forget those wonderful spiders, especially the large tarantula species, with some Central American spiders reaching over _ pound in Does Your Pet Suffer From Allergies, Dry Skin, Itchiness and Doggie Odor?
weight and others with a leg span of over 13 inches. They are represented with black, souless eye clusters and large fangs through which they inject their tissue destroying poison. Actually, it is a very effective method to trap and kill prey. They sit in the shadows of their burrow, awaiting their chance to pounce out and attack. They inject their fangs into the prey animal, introducing the deadly, necrotizing formula of enzymes and after the prey is reduced to a bag of fluids, they use the same fangs as a means to draw up the nutrient, much like using straws on a milkshake. So, in reality, spider fangs can be protective, but their true, first purpose is for acquiring and processing food for ingestion. So, rather than fear these uniquely talented night hunters, one can come to admire them for those very traits that make them successful predators in our present day ecosystems. Take some time and explore more about their biology and natural history and you too will come to appreciate them. Have a fun and safe Halloween night! “Veterinarian, Heal Thine Own Dog by Teresa Garden, DVM
B
aby Love Garden came into my life five years ago courtesy of the Xolo Rescue League. Baby, a toy Mexican Hairless, was deemed a “special needs adoption who required a home with no children and no other dogs. She needed a lot of time and attention since she was extremely shy and submissive and suffered from separation anxiety. The rescue group was reluctant to put her little picture on their website so I adopted her sight unseen. Her tongue hangs out approximately 3 inches from the right side of her mouth and they were afraid potential adopters would find her too ugly. I even had to sign an agreement as part of my adoption contract to never enter her into an “ugly dog contest. I think my Baby is beautiful and most people we meet find her to be quite cute. Her behavior is now very funny and cartoonish. Baby is extremely buck-toothed, skinny, and long-legged besides being bald, black, and tongue-enhanced. She charmingly prances like a little pony when she walks. Over the years, she has learned to make friends with men and women and now even children. She is much more confident and out-going and her separation anxiety is well under control. Baby has made many dog friends in our neighborhood and will play with a couple of the little ones. Throughout our time together, Baby has made amazing strides. Baby was (and still is) known as a “screamer. If she is the least bit startled in any way she lets out a high-pitched blood-curdling scream Jamie Lee Curtis would envy. This happens occasionally on our walks if the leash dips and touches her rear end unexpectedly. Needless to say, I receive dirty looks from passersby who are convinced I just gave my own little 10 pound naked dog a swift kick in her rear. I also get my share of dirty looks in the hot summer. Baby’s normal 3 inch tongue will hang out about 5-6 inches when she is panting during a walk in warm or hot weather. Of course, it looks to strangers as though I am marching the little thing across the Sahara and she is about to succumb to heat stroke. I’ve learned to tolerate the dirty looks. But Baby’s screaming jags have severely curtailed the typical veterinary care I would like to provide her. Thank goodness for my holistic bag of tricks. Just recently, after a long 12 hour work day, my staff and I were aghast to find an extremely large red raw bloody hot spot on Baby’s throat. A hot spot, as most dog lovers know only too well, is an area of acute moist dermatitis that comes on suddenly. The more the dog scratches the bigger it will get. Hot spots can become very large in just a matter of minutes or hours. The causes of hot spots are
varied. Anxiety, allergies, fleas, or adverse reaction to topical products can all play a role. In Baby’s case, I believe it was a combination of anxiety and diet. Her anxiety may be due to the sometime presence of a feral cat around our home. Baby has been eating the cat’s food like a little sneak and the food may have caused an adverse reaction in her skin. I immediately cut off access to the cat food. But now there was this huge ugly lesion on my little Baby’s neck. At times like this, I am only Baby’s mom. All my education, training, and 30 years of experience go out the window. I cannot think clearly. Thankfully, my wonderful staff Karen and Heather remained calm and thoughtfully suggested trying laser therapy on the wound. She would scream if anything was applied topically. She would scream and totally freak out if she were given a steroid shot. So we performed a series of laser treatments and kept the wound covered with a light stockinette. Baby does very well with laser therapy (since it is non-painful) and her skin responded beautifully. At the same time we were treating the hot spot, the underlying anxiety had to be tended to as well. I installed a pheromone diffuser in my home close to the couch where Baby resides during her waking hours. At work I sprayed her bed and my office with a pheromone spray. Pheromones provide a nice calming effect on most dogs. The Bach Flower Essences Rescue Remedy and Walnut were added to her water bowls. Rescue Remedy is great for general stress and anxiety and Walnut is specific for changes in the household (visiting feral cat). I started Baby on Canine Anxiety and Stress Formula made by the Resources Company. It is a blend of several calming eastern and western herbs in a chewable tablet form. My plan is to keep her on it for several months to help with the transition of possibly sharing our home with Sweet Pea the feral cat. Baby is also taking the antihistamine Benadryl to keep the itchy hot spot under control and to lessen her anxiety. As of this writing, the lesion has shrunk to a benign 1/2 inch scab. All in all, it has been a humbling experience. Caring for Baby allows me to feel the same frustration, anguish, and worry all pet owners must endure. It teaches me empathy and enhances my compassion for my dear clients and patients. And, I am truly grateful to be able to offer Baby holistic modalities that are so safe, gentle, and non-painful even a little “screamer will accept them. What Position Does CHIROPRACTIC Play In Sports? by Dr. Paul Hyland, D.C.
C
hiropractic plays the position of “The Edge” in performance, prevention and future. Would a 10% “Edge” in performance help you make the team, get that scholarship, win that championship or recover from an injury in time for that game? Regular chiropractic care can be that “Edge”. Dan O'Brien, Olympic Gold Medal winner in the Decathlon said: "Chiropractic is essential for running. If I could put a percentage value on it, I would say that I compete 8-10% better from regular chiropractic care." How does chiropractic increase performance? The brain communicates to all parts of the body through the central nervous system. This is how the body knows how to move and react. It controls how quickly your body moves - in other words, how it performs. It is essential that this communication is at 100% or the body will not perform at 100%. The nerves carry this communication from the brain to all parts of the body and is housed in your spinal column. Think of it like your cell phone and good "reception" and bad. You know with your cell phone how important reception is - if there is interference - the communication is dropped - you can't hear what the caller is saying. When there is nerve interference - the communication gets dropped. The body parts and organs can't "hear" what to do so they do not respond like they would if there was 100% communication. Prevention and faster healing is part 2 in gaining the “Edge”. Sean Atkins, PhD Exercise Physiologist states, "I would estimate that at least

90% of world class athletes use chiropractic on a regular basis to PREVENT INJURIES and to IMPROVE their PERFORMANCE." How important is injury prevention and faster healing? In an average year, 25 million people visit a doctor for injuries they suffer as a result of athletics. Overall, 67 billion dollars is spent each year for the treatment of athletic injuries, according to U.S. News and World Report. Sports injuries to youth now exceed the occurrence of infectious disease. No matter how great your talent and no matter how big your athletic opportunities are - they all come to a halt with injuries. Injury prevention should be one of your highest priorities! The future is the remainder of our lives after sports. Sports are a lot of fun but they also cause a lot of stress, strain and trauma to your body joints and skeletal system. Left untreated, the accumulation of these traumas over a decade of sports activities can be brutal in later years. Because your body suffers these traumas when you are young - the probable effects are not felt for many years. It would be like a child who eats and never brushes - their teeth are fine for a while - but in later years they pay the price for the neglect. You Will Live Longer Than Your Athletic Career!!! Early Detection Saves Lives
by Linda Weber Spradling Digital infrared thermographic imaging or “Thermography” is a pain-free, radiation-free and noninvasive approach to preventative medicine.
Thermograms detect inflammation in the body, vascular and lymphatic activity as well as hormone imbalances and estrogen dominance. Having this information gives you a tool you can use to see what is happening inside your body. Many times this is before you are having symptoms and before it can be detected on other traditional testing. Thermography is particularly helpful in assessing and maintaining breast health. Many types of cancers take years to develop to the stage that they can be detected by
PRoFEssioNAl REsoURcE DiREctoRY
a mammogram or an ultrasound; this is especially true for younger women (under 50). However, whereas thermograms do not see structure therefore do not see tumors or micro-calcifications, with regular thermographic screenings we are able to identify any developing pathology in the earliest stages. In many cases this is years before it is detected by the other testing. If the thermogram shows any suspicious lesions in the breast tissue it can provide a “clinical marker” so your doctor can also monitor the specific area of concern with additional testing.
October, 2014 The most important benefit of having the earliest possible detection of any physiological changes in the body is so you can intervene by altering diet and lifestyle to change the outcome before it has advanced to a stage to where it must be resolved with more invasive procedures. Medical Thermography of Metro St. Louis provides full body, half body and breast thermograms at all of our clinic locations. The BioMat’s quantum energetics allows the body to fight disease and heal with a naturally strong and efficient immune system. It is composed of 17 layers of technology, combining Far Infrared Rays (FIR), negative ions and amethyst crystals. Time spent on the mat relieves pain and joint stiffness, reduces stress and fatigue, boosts the immune system, burns calories and many other healthful benefits. Infrared Rays, nature’s invisible light and most
beneficial light wave, penetrate skin and increase circulation to detoxify the body of harmful toxins. The FIR can increase blood flow and clean the arteries (which means it can help lower blood pressure), release toxins, increase metabolism, heal soft tissue and relax muscles. Negative Ions are Nature’s Energizer. Ion particles cleanse and purify the air we breathe. Amethyst bolsters the production of the hormones
and strengthens the cleansing organs, the circulatory system and blood, the immune system and body metabolism. Be proactive about your health and well being. A good nights sleep on the BioMat or a mere 30 minute nap, can go a long way to ensuring a healthier, happier you. Call The Center for Mind, Body & Spirit to schedule an appointment to try the BioMat. 314.725.6767.

Our approach to holistic health includes the entire body and the oral cavity is no exception. We are dedicated to serving our patients and promoting a level of health care that carefully evaluates and reviews the use of dental materials, dental procedures and also offers dietary and nutritional support for each and every individual that is seen in our office.
Did you know that examining the mouth can reveal the presence of illnesses or unstable conditions in other areas of the body? If you feel like you’ve just about exhausted all your options in your search for better health, have your mouth examined with a different approach in mind. Get motivated, get educated, and get ready to participate in a
health-oriented lifestyle that will provide dental alternatives and a nutritional foundation designed to help support your own body’s healing powers.
The focus of holistic dentistry is to consider the mouth as a part of the whole body. We use materials and methods that are more compatible biologically with the body instead of the traditional dental materials. Examples of non-compatible materials are mercury fillings, non-precious heavy metal crowns, bridges and partials or dentures. Alternatives to fluoride are used
for the prevention of cavities. Proper alignment of the jaws and teeth are the foundation of how the body perceives itself in space. The result of improper alignment can result in symptoms of headache, ears ringing, loss of hearing, pain in the head and neck and clenching or grinding of the teeth. Good nutrition is inseparable for good
health. If your diet consists of food and drink made with white flour, sugar and no fresh fruits and vegetables, your body is likely to be acidic with resultant more medical and dental problems. For your dental evaluation contact our office for an appointment by calling 636-4589090 or email at cherryhillsdds@yahoo.com.

The American Arts Experience
ARTful Living St. Louis Area Fine Arts, Crafts & Performing Arts Michelle “Mike” Ochonicky, Arts Editor McQueen’s dancers explore Laumeier’s unique relationship with the St. Louis County Parks staff and the care that goes into the landscape. Watch it happen at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., or visit www.laumeier.org to learn more after the event. It’ll change your outlook about mowing the lawn! On October 10, Laumeier hosts the 6-9 p.m.opening reception of “Bugs,” an installation exhibition by local artist Tom Huck. Three interactive bug “springers” were designed by the artist based on his original woodcuts. Part of the Kranzberg Exhibition Series 2014, the monumental insects are Huck’s first public artwork, with a good dose of Huck’s typical mischief. On October 30, at 5:30 p.m., a Campfire Chat for the entire family will discuss the works.
T
he American Arts Experience began as a grassroots effort to raise awareness of the many, many aspects of the arts throughout our country. For 17 days this October, arts organizations and institutions present exhibitions, performances, concerts and all the other wonderful ARTful events that happen in our area collectively promoted under the banner of “The American Arts Experience.” I urge you to refer often this month to our online ARTful Happenings calendar (www.thehealthyplanet .com/artful-happenings) to keep a handy list of aaaaalllll there is to do. It’s simply overwhelming! Learn more about The American Arts Experience at www.americanartsstl.org. The American Arts Experience kicks off with the region’s favorite fall event at Missouri Botanical Garden: The Best of Missouri Market, October 3-5. Art, fine craft, local foods and beverages, music, family activities abound at the Garden as autumn weather arrives here in St. Louis. Stroll the tents, rain or shine. Meet new exhibitors and visit the perennial favorites; take home a treasure or two. The Market is a don’t-miss event. More info at www.mobot.org. Also early in The American Arts Experience, on

This performer is a DownBeat Hall of Famer and NEA Jazz Master, as well as a 20-time Grammy winner (yes, that number is correct!!), the fourth most-nominated artist in the history of the Grammy has 61 nominations to his credit. Chick Corea has been in the business of jazz since embarking on his solo career in 1966. Renowned as a pianist, he forged new ground with his acoustic jazz bands and with his innovative electric keyboarding. Combining creativity with education is the focus of a special program at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis this fall. The Fundred Dollar Bill project, conceived by artist Mel Chin, invites St. Louisans to draw their own “dollars,” called Fundreds, at the museum. These will be added to similar Fundreds from across the United States and sent on to U.S. Congress. The goal is to raise awareness about lead poisoning, in hopes of funding more educational efforts. In conjunction with Chin’s major retrospective, Rematch (on view this fall), CAM will host Fundred drawing workshops on site and in St. Louis city and county schools. According to CAM, “This is a cross-curricular project that raises local and national awareness of lead pollution with the ultimate intention to promote real change.” Art can impact society and change it. There will be Fundred Dollar Drawing Workshops on October 3, 25, November 7 and November 5, all 7-8 p.m. In celebration of autumnal fun, Third Degree Glass at 5200 Delmar hosts its annual Giant Pumpkin Blow and Pumpkin Death Match on October 17, 6-10 p.m. Glass artists from Third Degree take on those from Astral Glass in a firey attempt to create the biggest glass pumpkin. And one lucky attendee will win it! It’s a family-fun, free event, sure to put everyone in the Halloween mood. For details, call 314-367-4527 or visit www.stlglass.com. Art Walk At Garden Heights Nursery Kicks Off Sustainable Shopping Season by Crystal Stevens
T
he Holiday Season only adds to the detrimental effects that consumerism has on the earth. We all know the devastating effects that factories and big box stores have on the earth, especially the air and water quality. The influx in money spent at big box stores is at its peak during the holidays. It is extremely difficult to reduce one’s carbon footprint during the months of October, November and December. Luckily, shopping local is one way to help. With the exception of the few things on our Children’s lists to Santa (which is a hard concept not to buy into when you have kids), my husband and I tend to make all of our own Christmas Gifts for friends and family. Our friends and family are typically gifted with canned goods that were preserved from this year’s harvest, dried herbs, aprons, cloth journals and pillows made from recycled fabrics. We also sell our handmade wares at craft shows throughout the season to offer eco-minded individuals and alternative way to shop for the holidays-supporting local artisans. One of our favorite art fairs to vend at is the Art Walk at Garden Heights Nursery. With a vast array of fine art, jewelry, clothing accessories and household wares made by locals demonstrating quality craftsmanship, one is sure to find plenty of items to check off their list. Stock up on the beautiful selection of mums, pumpkins, squash and gourds while you are there! Supporting local artists means you are not only providing a viable income for the artist and his or her family, but you are also supporting the local economy and helping channel funds within the community rather than to the big corporations. Tower Grove Farmers Market has dozens of artisan vendors peppered in with the produce, grain and flower farmers! TGFM is an excellent place to get fresh food and fun gifts! There are several events and places throughout the St. Louis area this season to holiday shop from local artisans: October 3rd-5th - Best of Missouri Market www.missouribotanicalgarden.org

October 1 – 31 NON-GMO MONth Non-GMO Month was created by the Non-GMO Project in 2010 as a platform for raising awareness on the GMO issue. NonGMO Month is an opportunity to coordinate our voices and our actions, so that we can stand up loudly and clearly for our right to know what’s in our food, and to choose non-GMO. In March of 2013, Whole Foods Market announced we would label all products in our US and Canadian stores to indicate whether they contain Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). Since GMOs are so prevalent in the major food crops in our country — they’re a majority of US corn, soy, canola, cottonseed and sugar beets crops — this process will be challenging. But we are working hard and have committed to having labeling for all products by 2018. Whole Foods Market is the first national grocery chain to set a deadline for full GMO transparency. We currently sell over 6,000 products represented by more than 500 brands that are sourced non-GMO, more than any other retailer in North America. For additional information and ways to choose foods without GMOs, visit our website at: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/gmo-your-right-know. 314-968-7744. The result can be improved health, more satisfying relationships, increased creativity, and renewed enthusiasm for life. Primordial Sound Meditation can be learned by people of any age, culture, and educational background. It is recommended for anyone who wishes to enjoy greater peace, freedom and fulfillment. praying and planting trees for peace by Phil Berwick
T
He pRaYinG: As professionals in the Healthy Planet, we keep our columns focused on what we do in our trades and crafts. But I am aware, that the events in Ferguson have been written, spoken about and filmed from one end of the world to the other. So with a philosophical tree saw in one hand, and a spiritual tree planting shovel in the other, I have been pruning deadwood out of my heart with the one hand, and desiring to dig deeper into my soul with the other. I want to invite Healthy Planet readers to some Ferguson events, for the healing of not just OUR Ferguson, but the many other ‘Ferguson’s around our nation. Every Tuesday evening at 7:00pm, 2115 Chambers, at Believers Temple there is an ongoing prayer meeting with hundreds of folks of different colors. Be also looking for a large tent of prayer and live and loud spiritual music at ‘Red’s BBQ’ on Canfield and West Florrisant in Ferguson for 21 days beginning Sept 17-October 18 corresponding with 21 days of fasting. I am not so sure you will be seeing this in other media, for it is conflict and strife that usually sell. tHe plantinG: On Sunday October 5th, 2014 groups around the region will participate in what's being billed as one of the largest honorary tree planting efforts of its kind as community members join together to "Plant for Peace". The President of the St. Louis Board of Alderman, Lewis Reed, has partnered with Forest ReLeaf of Missouri to make available over 500 native species trees to be planted throughout the area as a showing of solidarity and comradery as we begin healing in the aftermath of the tragic events in Ferguson. "Tree plantings are a time-honored response to
tragedies," said Reed. "Events like these, where neighbors are engaging in peaceful, collaborative activities that provide benefits to the community for generations to come, are part of the solution and important in the healing process. According to Forest ReLeaf's executive director Donna Coble, "A tree is a living symbol of strength and hope for the future. For more information and to reserve your trees at no cost, visit www.plant4peacestl.org or call President Reed's office at 314-6224114.
