La Sheera Lee: Shay, you have made a notable name for yourself in the media industry. What do you feel are your keys to your success and longevity in the industry?

Shay Baby: I stand on the shoulders of many amazing media professionals and I hang on to every word they say. I’m what they call a “mentee extraordinaire”. God placed the right mentors in my life that taught me the keys. I mean why have a mentor if you are not going to apply what you’re being taught? Not me, I literally followed in my mentor’s footsteps. I’m also very coachable. Being coachable, applying the teachings and remembering the person after you, has afforded me great success and longevity in this industry.

LL: You are known for your positive attitude and bubbly personality. How have you been able to remain positive in an industry that is constantly changing?

SB: I change with it. No matter what is going on my bubbly personality and positive attitude will always remain the same. Yes, there are some bad days but the good outweighs them at every turn. I’m passionate about what I do, and that always keep a smile on my face and a positive mind frame.

LL: You are a serial entrepreneur. You juggle many hats and businesses extremely well. What tips do you have for others that would like to break into the field of media personality?

SB: Thanks. My advice is to intern at a radio or tv station. Learn EVERYTHING you can learn about broadcasting. Seek out a mentor and surround yourself with likeminded people. Don’t only focus on being an on-air talent, learn everything from how to work the board to tweaking the towers. Be well rounded in your field.

LL: You are a very astute businesswoman. You make business makes sense and dollars. Do you have business models or people you admire?

SB: I admire everything about Oprah Winfrey. My business goals lines up with everything she has accomplished, so I study her intensely. My business model is to not reinvent the wheel but to just sprinkle a little Shay Baby on it.

LL: What are your new business babies?

SB: Right now, I’m totally focused on making Brown Book Series a media giant in this industry. Be it giving you the best interviews I can. Or having the best romance conventions you’ve ever attended or being the best book publisher, you’ve ever experienced. We are now working on our non-profit to award journalism scholarships for aspiring authors. I want Brown Book Series to be in the hearts and minds of many people for many years to come.

LL: Your Brown Book Series is a novel experience. It is a hit with the reading community. What is your reaction to all of the love shown to the series?
