Actor of the Month

Interview by Teresa B. Howell

Teresa B. Howell: Tell us a little about yourself.

Ron Godfrey: My birth name is Ronald Lee Godfrey, but I go by Ron Godfrey. I was born on September 3, 1970 in Stamford, Connecticut. I am the 6th of 6 children. I’m now 51 years old with 5 children and 5 grandchildren. I’m an Actor, Author, Entrepreneur, and a lover of God.

TBH: What prompted you to get into the acting field?

RG: I can’t really say that it was something in particular that prompted me. I just remember waking up one day back in 2013 and saying that I’m gonna become an Actor and then 4 months later, I was on stage performing in my first stage play called, “Deathtrap.”

Then 4 months after that, I did my first short film. 4 months after that, I did my first feature film. 4 months after that, I was at Tyler Perry Studios doing one of his sitcoms and the story goe from there. Now, you can find me on Youtube, Prime Video, Netflix, BET, allblk, and will soon see me on HBO MAX and HULU.

TBH: When did acting become a priority for you?

RG: I would say that acting became a priority for me after being in it for about 2 years. I started seeing that Ii was pretty good at it and rewarding it could be not only for me, but for my family. Also, my mother had told me that she at one time in her life wanted to become a model or actress, but coming up in the south during the 40’s and 50’s was pretty rough so she never got the opportunity. I told her that she could live her dream through me and I count it a blessing that she’s here to see it come to pass.

TBH: What influenced you most? Was it a person in the field?

RG: After I made the decision to get into acting, I saw a quote from the late great Cicely Tyson that said, “You are never too old.” Then I read about Samuel L. Jackson and how he was in his early 40’s when he got started. I knew then that I could do it too.

TBH: What successful tips would you tell the next aspiring actor?

RG: Have a made up mind, be committed, stay consistent, study your craft, be a sponge when you’re on set and most of all, stay humble.

TBH: Describe a day on a set.

RG: A call time can be anywhere from 6 - 8 am. get there, get covid tested. You then find out where your trailer is and get settled. get your breakfast and then shortly after, you get your scene sheet, sides, etc. You gotta go through hair and make up and then your wardrobe is delivered to you. Depending how the Director is maneuvering the scenes, lunch times will vary. Now we’re set and we have to shoot the scenes from different angles, perspectives, etc. The day ends anywhere between 6-9pm.

TBH: What was your most memorable acting experience?

RG: I don’t have just one but if I had to choose, it would be when I did “American Soul” on BET. My scene was directed by the legendary Robert Townsend. I was in the 3rd episode of the first season. I was the piano player for the club scene and I had a ball.

TBH: Do you have any favorite Actors that you would like to work with?

RG: Yes! I have to start with Samuel L. Jackson, then Denzel, Angela Bassett, Morgan Freeman, Nicolas Cage, Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, The Rock, and Viola Davis.

TBH: Any upcoming projects that you would like to share? I’m filming a new limited series that will be released if not by the end of the year, definitely early next year. After that, I’ll be filming a pilot series called, “Battle at the Homefront” in which I’m honored to say that I have a principal role. I have other projects coming that I’ll mention at a later time.

TBH: I noticed you have a bestselling book about your life. Would you like to share some info about your publication?

Yes. I have an autobiography entitled, “Crying Out In The Dark” in which I talk about true events that occured in my life that caused depression. I’m currently working on part 2 and that is set to release in 2022.

TBH: What do you find most difficult about the industry?

RG: When you don’t get called back. That can be a bit stressful but that’s when you have to stay focused and keep grinding. Giving up is not an option.
