GOVERNING COUNCIL MEETING 1st NOVEMBER 2011 Materials & Services Fees for 2012 to be discussed followed by formal meeting.

YEAR 12 FORMAL SUNDAY th 26 NOVEMBER 6:30pm

Brunel Drive Modbury Heights South Australia, 5092 Ph: (08) 8263 6244 Fax: (08) 8263 6072 Email: contact@theheights.sa.edu.au WWW: http://www.theheights.sa.edu.au

The unrelenting drive of our Stage 2 SACE Research Project teachers to never give up on any student, even when they may have given up on themselves, has resulted in 100% of our students completing this compulsory component of the SACE. I would like to acknowledge their dedication, the many hours of extra time they have given and the ongoing encouragement, reassurance and nurturing of our students as they have worked through this aspect of learning over the year. Sharon Tibbits and Bob Powell in particular were still working alongside students on their last day of formal lessons to complete the Research Project requirements; Kris Nielsen drove to Munno Parra to collect the final work left at home by a student! Similarly I thank the many teachers who came into school during the holidays to provide extra lessons and support for Year 12 students, in a range of subjects, another effort to ensure that their students are well prepared to achieve their best. We look forward to a high standard of achievement from our Stage 2 students and wish them good luck and well deserved results in their exams as they complete their last week of secondary schooling and move on to the next stage of their lives in the workforce or further education. We bid them farewell after, for many, 14 years at The Heights.

If you would like to be part of this valuable experience for our students, please contact me at The Heights School on 8263 6244, and I will be pleased to organise a time convenient for you on the day. JIM SEIDEL – VOLUNTEER AT THE HEIGHTS SCHOOL AUTOMOTIVE PROGRAM WINS AN AWARD! The following nomination to the Tea Tree Gully Council for a Community Service Award was written by Kris Nielsen and Paul Bennett. The nomination was successful and we congratulate Jim. L-R: Kris Nielsen, Paul Bennett, Jim Seidel, Helen Calvert “Jim

Seidel has volunteered in the Automotive program at The Heights School for the past 7 years. When he began he was working in a small shed located at the side of the Technology building. Jim is an experienced, retired mechanic. His role was to support the Automotive teacher to set up the machinery and provide technical support.

Since those early beginnings the school now has an Automotive Skills Centre which provides TAFE accredited courses to students from a wide range of schools. Jim’s input has been invaluable in the success of the program and all done as a volunteer. Jim works as both a technical adviser and lecturer. He is at the school three days a week, every week during term time and has done this willingly for 7 years. As well as lecturing and maintaining the equipment Jim has also built training aids for the students. After stripping down a Ford Laser, he built a space frame into which he placed the mechanical components taken from the stripped down Ford. This is an invaluable teaching tool as it allows students to easily see how the components work together. Jim also does all the maintenance and OHS checks on the machinery. This needs to be done, daily, weekly monthly, end of term and end of year depending on the machinery being used. It would be very difficult for the school to run the program it does without this input from Jim. Jim works with a wide range of young people in the program. We have students with visual impairments, those on Negotiated Education Plans, students with low literacy/numeracy levels and those at risk of not completing their schooling due to family or social difficulties. We also provide programs for students from the Private School sector. Jim works successfully with them all. He also encourages the students to maintain contact with the Centre after they have finished their course so that he knows how they are going. Many of the students who have completed the Certificate 1 in Automotive have gone on to work in the industry. To work with the range of students who pass through the centre requires enormous patience and Jim has that in abundance. He will take the time needed to explain, one on one if necessary, how to do something so that the student is successful. He builds positive relationships with students so that they seek him out and look to him for leadership. Jim is totally reliable. He is always there, only missing a session when he was in hospital! Once when his car was broken down in Mount Gambier he borrowed a car to come back for the week and then went back to the Mount the next weekend to pick up his car! Jim is now looking to cut back the hours he puts into the Centre. He is not “retiring” all together but his role will be to provide maintenance of the equipment and no longer teach the program. We would like the community to recognise the fantastic contribution that Jim has made in the lives of the young people not only in our school but from around the district and beyond. He has given his time freely and willingly and we would like these qualities to be acknowledged in the wider community.”

(Mrs Rothery’s Walking School Bus)

Parents and their children can join me (Mrs Rothery) and my children on the ‘Walking School Bus’ as it travels around the streets of Modbury Heights on Friday mornings. If you live anywhere near the bus route, take a walk to the bus stop and wait for the walking bus to arrive then hop in and join the rest of the passengers as we work our way to school. If you do not live near the bus route, get your parents to drive to a bus stop and they can walk with you from there. Students must be accompanied by a parent! This is because the walk is outside of school hours so the students are not covered by school insurance. Parents and children meet at the stops below at the designated time, or join the bus as it travels along the bus route (see map for bus route). The bus will not wait for late arrivals. **If it is raining or you are unsure if the walking bus is in service one morning, don’t hesitate to text me on 0438 084 187 to check if the walking bus is on route that day.** Stop 3 Stop 4 Stop 5 Stop 6 Stop 7 Stop 8 Stop 9 Stop 10 Stop 11 Stop 12 Stop 13 Stop 14
