Dear Parents/Caregivers, Re: Notification of a Missed Assessment Task Deadline and subsequent consequences. At The Heights we feel that time management and the ability to meet deadlines are essential skills needed throughout the course of our adult life. To encourage students to develop these skills, and to improve student-learning outcomes, we have developed a Missed Deadline Policy. In summary, the policy will be administered as follows: • • • • • • •
Subject teachers will provide an assessment overview giving an outline of the required assessment tasks and proposed due dates for their completion. Teachers will do everything to ensure students are supported and given every opportunity to complete work by the due date. In the event of a long-term assessment task, teachers will provide checkpoints to monitor progress to avoid deadline problems. If a student is not meeting the requirements of these check points, parents will be notified via a phone call, diary note or letter home. If a student does not submit a piece of work for marking by the due date, parents will be informed with a “Notification of Missed Deadline” letter which will contain relevant information about the non-submitted assignment. At year 12, work not submitted for marking by the due date will be given an assessment score of “zero” for summative assessment purposes. Work handed in after the deadline may be marked for feedback purposes. At all other year levels, work not submitted for marking by the due date will be given an assessment score of “zero” but there may be an opportunity to redeem marks through negotiation between the teacher, parent and student.
If a student accumulates three Missed Deadline Notifications, then through negotiation with the parent one of the following consequences will apply; Supervised after school detention until the work is satisfactorily completed. Internal suspension until the work is satisfactorily completed. External suspension. This suspension period will be a time for students to reflect on why they are not submitting work for assessment, and in the case of year 10 or stage 1 students, may provide an opportunity to complete an alternative piece of work to be submitted for assessment Externally suspended students, preferably with a parent, will need to attend a re-entry meeting with me to discuss the outcomes of their reflection time and to possibly plan an alternative learning program. Following re-entry, the count for zero notices will be reset to none. I look forward to your support in endeavouring to improve learning outcomes for students at The Heights. If you have any questions or wish to discuss this matter please contact me during school hours. Kind regards,
