THE HEIGHTS SCHOOL Policy for Negotiating Deadlines for SACE Summative Assessment Tasks TEACHER RESPONSIBILITIES Assessment Plans • Teachers will provide students with a plan outlining the due dates for summative assessment tasks (including tests). Criteria for marking will be clearly stated. • Where modification to the original plan becomes necessary, teachers will notify students in good time. They will ensure that students have adequate preparation time and avoid clashes with major assessments in other subjects. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES • Time Management Students will use diaries and time planners. They will write down all tasks and their due dates. Some assignments are set over a week or longer. Students must break these tasks into smaller parts and write them into their diaries so that they do not leave work until the “last moment”. • Negotiation Students will begin the process of negotiating deadlines by speaking to the relevant teacher. It is the student’s responsibility to follow through this process before the submission date.

FAILURE TO SUBMIT ASSESSMENT TASKS In the absence of prior negotiation, failure t o submit work for summative assessment by the set deadline will result in a grade of RNM (Requirements Not Met) for that task. Discounting of grades for late submission is not permitted by SSABSA. NEGOTIATING EXTENSIONS Criteria for Negotiation of Extension In special circumstances students may be granted an extension to the set deadline. The grounds will naturally represent a balance between compassion to an individual and fairness to the whole group of students involved. PROCESS FOR NEGOTIATING EXTENSIONS Communication by means of a telephone call or a letter from the caregiver is required before the date of the summative test or submission. In unforeseen circumstances where this is not possible, extensions may be granted at the teacher’s discretion. In cases where extensions have been granted t o students, the work handed in will be graded at face value for summative purposes. No discounting of grades will occur. Exams and tests under supervision may require different tasks to be undertaken. 30/7/04

REASONS FOR WHICH AN EXTENSION MAY BE GRANTED 1. Prolonged illness (substantiated by medical evidence) could be grounds for extension of an activity scheduled for completion over a long period. 2.

Illness or injury preventing the student taking a test or handing in a short term activity on the set date could be grounds for negotiation.

3.

Family or personal trauma could be grounds for an extension. Students should be prepared to follow this up with a Counsellor if necessary.

4.

Unforeseen overload of assignments for submission can be grounds for extension. He/she should be able t o substantiate the request for extension with evidence of a genuine attempt having been made.
