Oil Chiller™ filter heat sink lowers engine temps up to 30ºF Middlefield, Ohio and Oshkosh, Wisconsin—Airwolf Filter Corp. has recently developed an oil filter heat sink as a solution to engine oil overheating. The simple design fits on all aviation filters and requires no STC. It comprises a fan-array of anodized aluminium fins surrounding the filter canister, and is held in place by expandable hose clamps.

“Oil Chiller was designed as an inexpensive yet effective method of reducing engine oil temperatures,” said Airwolf’s Jonny Quest. “It meets that promise.” The Oil Chiller is modelled after multifinned heat sinks found in computer central processing units; it was designed to increase significantly the effective

Tape solution addresses new FAA-mandated AD Middlefield, Ohio—Airwolf Aerospace LLC. is marketing its FAA-certified (STC) blade tape kits as a protective measure against blade skin delamination on Robinson R22 and R44 helicopter main rotor blades. The FAA recently issued a second Airworthiness Directive (AD 201112-10) on all Robinson helicopters. In 2007, Robinson Helicopter Co. issued service alerts SB-72 and SB-103 advising owners that some main rotor blade skins were prone to debonding at the skin-to-spar joint on the lower surface of the blade tips, causing the aircraft to compromise its airworthiness. Debonding can occur when the bond line is exposed due to excessive erosion of the blade finish, or when corrosion occurs on the internal aluminium tip cap. This most recent AD revisits a 2007 directive, which instructs Robinson R22 and R44 operators to inspect main-rotor blades for possible defects before each flight. Airwolf addressed this through its Alternative Method Of Compliance (AMOC), a certified blade tape that overlaps the skin and leading edge, obviating the need for recurrent inspections and lap-joint painting. Airwolf Aerospace Senior Engineer, John Montana said, “ The problem of delamination can be largely avoided if owners install our easy-to-apply blade tapes, protecting the joint in question. We look at our tapes as an effective form of insurance against having to buy new blades which can cost between $25,000 and $40,000.” Airwolf’s solution, STC- SR02491CH, uses a proprietary polymer tape which is bonded to the blade. This prevents

the leading-edge skin debonding, which occurs when the bond line is exposed due to erosion of the blade’s painted finish. The blade tape covers the outboard section of the rotor blade where history has shown debonding to occur. It seals the bond line making penetration by foreign objects impossible, and drastically reduces the risk of blade skin delamination. “Pre-flight blade inspections required by the A.D. are now a breeze as all the pilot has to do is look up and see the blade tape is still covering the bond line.. It is a great solution to a problem that affects more than 3,000 helicopters in the US alone,” adds Montana. Working with 3M, Airwolf modified 3M’s tape that was originally designed for use on CH-47 Chinook and S-70 Blackhawk helicopters, to make it compatible for the smaller, narrower Robinson rotor blade. Applied as per Airwolf’s detailed instructions, the tape prevents delamination without causing any loss in aerodynamic performance. The current price of the rotor blade protective kit is $1299 for the R22 and $2499 for the R44. Once the initial kit and STC has been purchased, Airwolf offers blade tape repair kits costing $500 for the R22 and $1000 for the R44. Airwolf Aerospace LLC. is the world’s leading manufacturer of remote-mounted oil filters for piston and radial engines on general aviation aircraft. It also manufactures FAA-certified wet vacuum pumps, air oil separators, oil filter cutters and TT Straps for the Bell 206 series helicopters.

surface area of the oil filter to increase heat dissipation from the canister. Airwolf’s new oil cooler was tested in a Bellanca Scout glider-tow aircraft, whose engine operating temperatures were commonly recorded as high as 250 F, enough to ‘cook’ the hard-working engine. The installed combination of the Oil Chiller, and Airwolf’s firewall-mounted oil filter system, resulted in an improved and optimal oil temperature of 185˚ F. The product developer had only expected a drop of 20˚ F attributed to the use of the remote filter kit and a further drop of 10˚ F with the use of the Oil Chiller, yet the aircraft operators consistently observe a decrease of 60˚ F. “We’re more than pleased with our results,” Quest added. The price for the Oil Chiller heat sink is $100, available direct from Airwolf, (tel: 800-326-1534) with official launch at EAA’s AirVenture in Oshkosh, outdoor exhibit # 287, from July 25-31.

“There is a definite demand for positive innovations to reduce oil temperatures,” added Quest “Our Oil Chiller is an economic, simple way to accomplish this.” Airwolf Filter Corp. is the world’s leading manufacturer of remote-mounted oil filters for horizontally-opposed and radial piston engines on general aviation aircraft. It also manufactures FAA-certified wet vacuum pumps, air oil separators, oil filter cutters and Robinson helicopter rotor blade tape, and TT Straps for Bell 206 machines.

I am about to sell my aircraft. Can you provide some guidance regarding the required FAA paperwork?

Answer: The FAA must receive four items in order to process the transfer of an aircraft from one entity to another. The two parties must fill out a bill of sale, indicating what aircraft is being sold, the buyer’s and seller’s information, and the price. You can use FAA Form 8050-2, “Aircraft Bill of Sale,” or create your own bill of sale. In addition, the seller must remove the existing aircraft registration from the aircraft. He or she will sign and date the back, and will typically check boxes A and F to indicate that the registration is canceled and ownership transferred, as well as fill out the name and address of the purchaser. The seller also must sign the bottom of the old registration, and then send it to the FAA, releasing his or her registration of the airplane. The buyer must fill out FAA Form 8050-1, “Aircraft Registration Application,” in order to apply for a new registration in his or her name. This is a two-part carbon copy form, and the pink copy of the form is to be torn off and placed in the aircraft as the buyer’s new temporary registration. You can obtain the 8050-1 form from AOPA, your local flight standards district office, or at many airports. Finally, the buyer should include a check or money order for $5 made payable to the FAA to be included in the paperwork submission (including the bill of sale and the registration application). For a detailed explanation of the process, check out AOPA’s subject report. You also can use AIC Title Services if you require help with title searches and escrow services.

American Eurocopter showcases AStar leadership at ALEA 2011 Grand Prairie, Texas – The AStar family of helicopters has become the standard in airborne law enforcement. It is a reliable, high performance platform that has been proven throughout the U.S. law enforcement community. In service with agencies like U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, California Highway Patrol and many other federal, state and local agencies, there are now more than 200 AStars in law enforcement roles in the United States. At this year’s ALEA in New Orleans, two AStar helicopters were featured at American Eurocopter’s booth #715: an AS350 B2 from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Aero Bureau and an AS350 B3 from the Texas Department of Public Safety Aircraft Section. The AS350 B2 has become the signature aircraft for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Aero Bureau. The Aero Bureau has 12 AS350

B2s in its fleet and these aircraft represent the most modern B2 law enforcement fleet in the world. With advanced technology systems that include Forward Looking Infrared Radar (F.L.I.R.), multi-band digital radio systems, Global Positioning Mapping System, and Down-Link video feed, the Aero Bureau can provide real-time proactive support to law enforcement personnel and Command Operation Centers. The Texas DPS AS350 B3 that was on display is one of two B3s added to a DPS fleet that already includes 14 Eurocopter AStar helicopters and one EC145. The B3s were chosen for their cabin size, multi-mission flexibility and hot & high performance. The mission equipment suite on this aircraft includes a thermal imager, searchlight and moving map system. Texas DPS also added a 500 lb. rescue hoist that is utilized in search & rescue operations.

American Eurocopter introduces new inadvertent IMC training course in AS350 Flight & Mission Training Simulator Grand Prairie, Texas— at the 2011 Airborne Law Enforcement Association convention in New Orleans, American Eurocopter is introducing a new safety innovation for helicopter operators: an Inadvertent Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IIMC) Training Course in the AS350 Level B Flight & Mission Training Simulator. The course is applicable to all mission environments and American Eurocopter elected to introduce the course at ALEA in light of the recent NTSB recommendation for ALEA to require Inadvertent IMC recovery training in its accreditation standards. “This course reinforces our

commitment to increasing safety industry wide. It was designed to be non-airframe specific allowing pilots of any helicopter type to benefit from the advantages of our AS350 Level B simulator and this important training,” said Del Livingston, American Eurocopter’s Vice President of Flight Operations and Customer Training. “After attending the IIMC training course in the AS350 Flight & Mission Training Simulator, pilots will come away with a new perspective on the challenges of an IIMC recovery.” American Eurocopter’s AS350 flight and mission simulator was designed to provide training for aircraft emergency procedures, NVG training, Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) mission training, and Airborne Law Enforcement (ALE) mission training. With its full cabin, the simulator is also ideal for Crew Resource Management (CRM) training.

ntsb reports NTSB Identification: *WPR11LA244* Date: June 01, 2011 Location: Stockton, CA Aircraft: HILLER UH-12E Injuries: 1 Uninjured. A Hiller UH-12E performed an emergency autorotation into a grove of cherry trees while performing low level agricultural operations near Stockton, California. The pilot initially reported that he was conducting low level agricultural drying of cherry trees when the tail rotor struck a tree during a turn. Later in the week the pilot revised his statement saying that the skids of his helicopter were at least 10-15 feet above the tallest tree when he felt a shake or vibration through the control surfaces. He looked for a

10

place to land and was maneuvering the helicopter towards a road when the helicopter experienced a full left yaw. The pilot applied full right pedal to counter the yawing motion and entered autorotation through the trees to the ground. The main rotor blade, tail rotor blade, tail boom, front fuselage, skids, and the undercarriage of the helicopter were substantially damaged. The pilot did not report any emergency alarms or cautionary lights accompanying the accident sequence and sustained no injuries on impact. Examination of the aircraft found continuity between the tail rotor and the linkages through the drive train which lead to the main transmission. Control system continuity was also

established. The tail boom near the tail rotor transmission was twisted clockwise, shearing the aluminum. Tail rotor blade #1 was sheared off about one quarter of the distance between the blade root and the blade tip, and rotor blade #2 had compression deformation of the trailing edge near the blade root. The sheared off portion of tail rotor blade #1 was located in the orchard. Visual inspection found a circular impact deformation in the leading edge at the blade tip, separation of the blade tip weight from the blade, deformation of the blades surface area, and compression bending of the blade’s trailing edge. NTSB Identification: *WPR11CA250* Date: June 04, 2011 Location: Las Vegas, NV Aircraft: SCHWEIZER 269C, Injuries: 1 Serious,1 Uninjured. According to the pilot, while on a sightseeing flight he flew over a mesa and commenced a hover maneuver about 12 feet above a ridge line. When the wind speed increased he attempted to depart the area. The pilot stated that he encountered a strong downdraft in the estimated 20-knot wind. While flying toward lower elevation terrain on the lee side of the mesa in an effort at departing the area, the helicopter’s skids impacted rocks and the helicopter rolled over. NTSB Identification: *WPR11CA264* Date: June 18, 2011 Location: Prescott, AZ Aircraft: Robinson Helicopter R22 BETA Injuries: 2 Uninjured. The instructor reported that his student was taxing the helicopter in a north direction along a taxiway parallel to runway 12/30 with a near direct tailwind of 10 knots with gusts to 19. The student started to lose tail rotor authority over the helicopter. At this time the instructor took control of the helicopter and proceeded to apply full left pedal until they regained tail rotor authority and directional control. Because

of the strong winds from the south, the instructor opted to keep control of the helicopter until they were airborne and he proceeded to continue their taxi to the displaced threshold of runway 12. Upon reaching the displaced threshold, the instructor started a 220 degree turn to the left in order to line up with a takeoff direction to the south into the wind. The instructor reported that half way through the turn the helicopter violently yawed to the left, and he applied full right pedal to cancel the yaw but was unable to arrest the helicopters left yawing moment. The helicopter landed hard on the skids, damaging the main rotor and severing the tail boom aft of the tail rotor blades hazard guard and before the tail rotor transmission. The pilot reported no mechanical issues with the helicopter prior to the flight. The wind limitation listed in the Pilot’s Operating Handbook for the helicopter is 25 knots including any gust factor. NTSB Identification: *WPR11LA267* Date: June 19, 2011 Location: Lost Hills, CA Aircraft: HILLER UH-12E Injuries: 1 Minor. A Hiller UH-12E impacted the terrain near Lost Hills, California. The pilot received minor injuries, and the helicopter sustained substantial damage. The 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flight, which departed a local refueling site about 15 minutes prior to the accident, was being conducted in visual meteorological conditions. No flight plan had been filed. According to the pilot, while applying chemicals to an agricultural field, the helicopter’s engine suddenly stopped producing power. Because he did not have sufficient speed or altitude to execute an autorotation, he maintained a level flight attitude until the helicopter contacted the terrain. The impact resulted in substantial damage to both the main rotor blades and the airframe.

NTSB Identification: *WPR11WA285* Date: June 19, 2011 Location: Ladpur, India, India Aircraft: BELL 407 Injuries: 2 Serious. A Bell 407, VT-SWA, crashed during landing at Ladpur, Dehradun, India. The pilot and passenger were seriously injured and the helicopter was substantially damaged. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Government of India. This report is for information purposes only and contains only information released by the Government of India. NTSB Identification: *CEN11WA412* Date: June 19, 2011 Location: Glastonbury, United Kingdom Aircraft: McDonnell Douglas 369E Injuries: 1 Serious. A McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Company model 369E was substantially damaged during an emergency landing after experiencing a mechanical failure of the tail-rotor control system near Glastonbury, United Kingdom. The helicopter was substantially damaged and the pilot was seriously injured during the accident. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom Government. NTSB Identification: *WPR11LA277* Date: June 21, 2011 Location: Mesa, AZ Aircraft: BELL 212 Injuries: 2 Serious. A Bell 212 crashed under unknown circumstances near Falcon Field Airport (FFZ), Mesa, Arizona. The pilot and crew chief received serious injuries and the helicopter sustained substantial damage. According to a FAA inspector, the accident site was located on the Salt River Indian Reservation about 10 miles north of FFZ. The helicopter had rolled onto its right side and a post-crash fire consumed the cockpit area. NTSB Identification: *WPR11LA274* Date: June 21, 2011 Location: Franklin, CA Aircraft: BELL 206B Injuries: 1 Uninjured. A Bell 206B landed hard during a practice autorotation near Franklin Field Airport, Franklin, California. The pilot was not injured; the helicopter sustained substantial damage during the landing, and was subsequently consumed by post impact fire.

The pilot departed in the helicopter from Mather Airport at 1110 with the intention of performing pattern practice at Franklin. Upon arrival, he performed a series of straight-in autorotations, quick-stops, and low hovers. He then performed two 180-degree autorotations to the left. He reported no anomalies with the helicopter during that period, and stated that all the maneuvers were uneventful. The pilot chose a 50-feet-wide practice landing area, consisting of chest-high grass, and recalled that the temperature was in excess of 100°F. There he practiced slope landings and pickups, and one uneventful 180-degree autorotation. As he rounded the base leg for a second 180-degree autorotation, he confirmed that all flight instruments were indicating normal engine operation, but recalled that his airspeed was too low. He lowered the helicopter’s nose, and the descent rate increased to about 1,800 feet per minute. About 100 feet agl he heard the low rotor warning, and immediately countered by quickly rolling the throttle to full power while applying up collective. The helicopter then shuddered and vibrated, with accompanying, “snorting and popping sounds,” that he had never experienced before. The pilot elected to perform a runon landing rather than continue with the recovery. During the landing the helicopter impacted the ground hard, spreading the skids. The right skid dug into the ground and separated, and the helicopter rolled onto its right side. He then shutdown the fuel supply and egressed. The pilot stated that the engine was still operating after he exited. The helicopter continued to burn for two more hours as fire crew attempted to gain access to the sight. NTSB Identification: *WPR11LA282* Date: June 23, 2011 Location: Hanford, CA Aircraft: HILLER UH12E Injuries: 1 Uninjured. A Hiller UH-12E sustained substantial damage during a hard landing following a loss of tail rotor control near Hanford, California. The pilot reported that upon completing a night time aerial application on a nearby field, he landed the helicopter on a platform that was mounted on a truck to refuel the helicopter and refill the chemical hopper. Following

refueling operations, the pilot conducted a quick pre-flight inspection to look over the helicopter. Upon inspection of the transmission, the pilot observed a small oil leak originating where the tail rotor drive shaft attaches to the transmission. The pilot said that following discussion with his boss, they decided to reposition the helicopter from the platform onto the ground so they could perform a more detailed examination of the oil leak. The pilot stated that following a normal engine start, he began to lift the helicopter off the platform and heard a “growling” sound originating from the transmission followed by an immediate loss of tail rotor control. The pilot said that the helicopter immediately began to rotate as he rolled the throttle off and lowered the collective. Subsequently, the helicopter landed hard onto the ground adjacent to the truck. Examination of the helicopter by a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector revealed that the tail boom exhibited structural damage. One of the two tail rotor blades was separated at the blade root. The helicopter was recovered to a secure location for further examination.

NTSB Identification: *CEN11FA422* Date: June 27, 2011 Location: Del Valle, TX Aircraft: ROBINSON R22 BETA Injuries: 1 Fatal. A Robinson R22 BETA struck trees and impacted terrain near Del Valle, Texas. The pilot, the sole occupant on board the helicopter, was fatally injured. The helicopter was substantially damaged. According to a witness, the helicopter was flying just above the trees and as it crossed the Colorado River, he heard a loud “pop” or “bang.” He saw something separate from the helicopter and fall into the river. The helicopter impacted trees and terrain on the other side of the riverbank. The witness did not see the impact. The burnt wreckage was at the base of a large tree. One rotor blade was found approximately 870 feet from the wreckage. The other rotor blade was found approximately 975 feet from the wreckage but in the opposite direction. Both blades were intact with no leading edge damage. The river was searched by the Texas Department of Public Safety. Nothing was recovered.

HAI president calls out attack on GA HAI President Matt Zuccaro joined the leaders of six major aviation associations in calling for members of Congress to discard a legislative proposal that would impose a $25 “departure fee” on both airlines and general aviation. This, in combination with the reported change to the depreciation schedule for aircraft, would cause undue burden and threaten the stability of

HAI President Matt Zuccaro

the helicopter industry. A letter cosigned by Zuccaro was delivered to each member of the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives, telling lawmakers that tying aviation to the current negotiations to raise the debt ceiling would revisit these resoundingly discredited approaches to raising revenues from the aviation industry. With 14 million people out of work in the U.S., businesses not hiring due to economic uncertainty and struggling to meet payroll, Zuccaro said “Now is not the time to revisit the bad idea of user fees.” Zuccaro believes this type of targeted legislative “solution” will lead to further economic difficulties, punish middle class workers, and result in a significantly detrimental effect on the helicopter industry. “Helicopters perform missions on a daily basis for the greater good of society, such as emergency medical transport, aerial firefighting, law enforcement, search and rescue, disaster relief, national security, and counterterrorism. Helicopter operators already pay

more than their fair share when one considers their minimal impact on the ATC infrastructure.” Zuccaro emphasized, “Enough is enough!” Taxes on fuel have been a sustainable way of attaining revenue from the aviation industry. By adding user fees and changing the depreciation schedule of aircraft, the helicopter industry would strain to meet tax obligations that are above and beyond those of other industries. A change to the depreciation schedule for general aviation aircraft or the implementation of user fees will not reduce the deficit or have any significant effect on the growing U.S. debt problem, but it will negatively affect every segment of the helicopter industry. This dangerous legislative change to current law would jeopardize more than 1.2 million jobs throughout the United States and seriously impact many small businesses which are the engine of aviation. Middle class workers would be punished by such a short sighted approach, including those

who work in industries that support general aviation, including aircraft and avionics manufacturing, ground support, maintenance, scheduling and dispatch, and the related infrastructure. The general aviation industry contributes more than $150 billion to the U.S. economy each year, with general aviation aircraft forming an essential component of the transportation system. The GA industry employs workers across the country to support all sizes of business and enable helicopter operators to perform more efficiently and maintain productivity. Businesses, charitable groups, flight schools, and medical providers would be faced with a new tax burden that could jeopardize countless communities that rely on general aviation helicopters to provide access to business tools, medical care, law enforcement, disaster relief, and other vital services.
