Simplex receives STC for AS350 and 355 aerial cleaning system The FAA has granted an STC for Simplex Aerospace’s new power line insulator and windmill cleaning system for the Eurocopter AS350 and 355 series. The STC, number SR02207SE issued on 12-15-2011, is the newest product in the company’s 65 year history of innovation. The Aerial Cleaning system represents the third generation of aerial cleaning equipment delivering superior performance and value to power utility providers and helicopter operators. The Aerial Cleaning system utilizes a 180 gallon water tank significantly increasing operating times between refills. The nozzled boom extends past the rotor tips providing extended washing distance permitting operators to clean hard to reach insulator strings. The power assisted operator control reduces operator fatigue facilitating safer and
longer operating days. In total test results show the Aerial Cleaning system delivers three times the productivity of other systems. Operators and utility providers continue

Jerry Trimble Helicopters student receives flight training scholarship Whirly-Girls scholarship awarded to helicopter student. McMinnville, OR—Jerry Trimble Helicopters (JTH) is proud to announce that Jessica Ward has received the Robinson Safety Course Scholarship offered by the Whirly-Girls. The Robinson Safety Course is a 3-day course conducted by the factory in Torrance, CA and includes both flight and ground training. Jessica began training at JTH in the summer of 2010 and received her private pilot license in the R-22. “I was happy to hear that Jessica received the RHC Scholarship. I’m sure it won’t be long before Jessica makes the transition to flying helicopters full-time” says Jerry Trimble. Membership in the Whirly-Girls is open to any woman holding a helicopter rating. They offer scholarships for helicopter flight training. JTH has recently acquired its fourth R-22 and is relocating the R-44 to their
winter satellite base in Thermal, CA to provide instrument training and scenic flights in the Coachella Valley. JTH is planning on expanding their office space in the Fall of 2012 to include more classrooms. The JTH main office, established in 2007, is located in McMinnville, Oregon (MMV). JTH prides itself on offering quality, fast, primary and advanced flight training in the R-22 and R-44. “I believe we have continued to attract students due to the fact that we offer individual attention to each of our students”, said Trimble. “It’s easy to get lost in the bigger flight schools. Pilots are welcome here Those are the bold-type opening words on an FAA Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI) brochure entitled Physiological Training Courses for Civil Aviation Pilots. The phrase certainly applies to the courses that are the subject of the brochure, but it also applies to the entire range of resources that CAMI’s Airman Education Program creates and makes available, free, to pilots at http://www.faa. gov/ pilots/safety/ pilotsafetybrochures/. With the 2008 Experimental Aircraft Association’s (EAA) AirVenture® convention just around the corner, we also
want to stress that pilots are welcome at CAMI’s Airman Education Program exhibits and live presentations in the FAA Aviation Safety Center. We have many resources to offer, and we are eager to meet you. If you can’t make it to OshkoshTM , you are still welcome to take advantage of the many resources that the CAMI Airman Education Program has created to help airmen better understand the unique characteristics of the aviation environment. We will profile specific resources over the next few months.
Protecting your eyesight Let’s start with a subject that is timely for summer flying in general, and for AirVenture participants in particular: Protecting your eyes from exposure to harmful solar radiation. The medical certification process has long accommodated the reality that very few are blessed with perfect vision. Unless you are among those fortunate few, the “limitations” portion of your medical certificate will clearly state the requirement for use of corrective lenses when you fly.
So, you want to be a helicopter pilot by Lynn McCloud How do you become a helicopter pilot? Where should you start? “The best place for young people today to start,” says James Lamb, Central Region, FAA Safety Team, “is to find a training provider that trains well and also helps with career development.” There are hundreds of part 141 training centers as well as part 61 programs, which provide helicopter instruction. In addition, selected colleges and universities provide helicopter flight instruction. For example, Kansas State University at Salina offers rotary wing flight training. To help in selecting the right school, the University Aviation Association offers guidance on “Considerations When Choosing a School.” The price tag to get the training and experience to earn a living as a helicopter pilot can be hefty. It’s important to find the right place to provide students “with the skills, knowledge, and understanding as well as with a range of flying experience,” says Aviation Safety Inspector Eric Carroll. “Beyond receiving training, it’s important for prospective helicopter pilots to have an understanding of the prerequisites for employment and a plan to achieve them.” To get a head start, as well as
for continuing education, check out the courses at the FAASafety. gov’s Learning Center on helicopter operations. Helicopter – General and Flight Aerodynamics covers the basics and explains the four forces — lift, weight, thrust, and drag — that act on a helicopter in flight. It also explains additional physical characteristics and effects that are unique to a helicopter and its rotor system while in flight. There are other courses, too, along with safety seminars and special events, which the FAA Safety Team (FAASTeam) puts on in cooperation with Helicopter Association International (HAI). If you are not already signed up, register at FAASafety.gov and on the Certificates & Ratings tab specify the rotorcraft certificates you have/are seeking in order to get information about helicopter events. Check out the FAA’s Rotorcraft Flying Handbook, a technical manual for applicants preparing for their private, commercial, or flight instructor pilot certificates with a helicopter or gyroplane class rating. The handbook includes detailed coverage of aerodynamics, flight controls, systems, performance, flight maneuvers, emergencies, and aeronautical decision-making. It is never too early to get involved
with a professional association and to start reading helicopter publications and websites. At www.rotor.com, HAI offers a student membership, with the first year free for full- or part-time students enrolled in a flight training school, A & P school, college, or university. The American Helicopter Society International (AHS), billed as the world’s premier vertical flight technical society, also offers a student membership and has several technical publications. Both HAI and AHS offer scholarships. Among the leading trade publications are Rotor & Wing, which includes a training tab on its website. For those interested in helicopter maintenance, check out www.helimx.com, a magazine dedicated to helicopter maintenance. Educational resources are also available from manufacturers. For example, Bell Helicopter has a number of educational and safety materials available on its Helicopter Professional Pilots Safety Program, or HELI PRO PS, website including its Human AD newsletter, which stresses the human factors involved in actual accidents and incidents. Wearing glasses or contact lenses when you fly meets the legal requirement, but corrective lenses are not enough. Because infrared and ultraviolet radiation from the sun can damage your eyes, you also need protective lenses. The right sunglasses can help protect your eyes from exposure to harmful solar radiation. Sunglasses also reduce the effects of harsh sunlight, decrease eye fatigue, and protect your eyes from the risk of impact with objects (such as flying debris from a bird strike).
Beyond the image Sunglasses have long been part of the “cool pilot” image. When you are selecting your next pair of flying sunglasses, though, be sure to consider function along with fashion. Here are just of a few tips from CAMI’s Sunglasses for Pilots: Beyond the Image brochure: • Wear sunglasses that incorporate 99 to 100% UVA (ultraviolet-A) and UVB (ultraviolet-B) protection. • Weigh the pros and cons of the most common lens materials in use (“crown” glass, monomer plastic (CR-39®), and polycarbonate plastic). • Choose a tint that screens out only 70 to 85% of visible light, and does not appreciably distort color. • Avoid polarized lenses, which can reduce or eliminate the visibility of instruments with anti-glare filters. The Helicopter Museum receives a Seaspray Mk 1 radar system The Helicopter Museum (THM) in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset took delivery of an obsolete Seaspray Mk 1 surveillance radar system as an early Christmas present on 14th December, for its recently restored Westland Navy Lynx HAS Mk.2 prototype. The Lynx HAS Mk.2 in the museum collection was the second prototype (XX910), which carried out the early flight testing of the Lynx Seaspray installation and the associated Sea Skua air-to-surface missile system. At the time a Cold War threat had emerged from missile-armed fast attack boats in service with the Soviet and Warsaw Pact navies. The potential damage these craft could inflict was demonstrated in October 1967, when Styx missiles fired from a Russian-built Komar class attack boat of the Egyptian Navy sank an Israeli destroyer. Seaspray was designed specifically for the Lynx to counter this threat. This
required a forward-scanning, lightweight and compact, high performance all weather surveillance radar that could detect and track small fast-moving surface targets at significant distances and provide illumination and guidance support for the Sea Skua anti-surface vessel guided missile, being developed concurrently by the BAC Guided Weapons Division. The contract to develop Seaspray was issued to Ferranti Radar Systems in Edinburgh in 1969, with flight testing in XX910 getting underway in 1974. These trials were completed in early 1975 at Portland, Dorset where the radar was assessed against fast patrol boats off the Dorset coast, despite interruptions by Russian surveillance trawlers trying to gather the top secret electronic data. Following a lengthy test career, XX910 was donated to the museum in 2000 and earlier in 2011 underwent restoration by a

team of volunteers at RNAS Yeovilton. Acquisition of the radar system will complete this work. Collections Officer Kathryn Tucker said “We have yet to decide whether to display the radar alongside XX910 or to install it in the aircraft, but a growing shortage of display space makes installation more likely. Either way we shall try and ensure it is viewable by visitors”.

of Selex Galileo, following a meeting between the chairman of THM Trustees, Elfan ap Rees, and senior managers of the company at a “40th Anniversary of Seaspray” gathering during the 2011 Paris Air Show. The Seaspray system was developed in Edinburgh by the former Ferranti Defence Systems company before it was later taken over by GEC-Marconi. This in turn became part of BAE Systems before being acquired by Finmeccanica in 2007 and renamed Selex Galileo. Later versions of Seaspray continue in production today for both rotary and fixed-wing applications, including the Lynx successor, the AgustaWestland AW159 Wildcat, which is due to enter Royal Navy service soon.

Common aviation insurance terms and definitions There are many terms and definitions used in aviation insurance which you need to know in order to read and understand your insurance policy. They should be contained in the definitions section of your policy and can vary from policy to policy. However, there are some terms and phrases not defined in your policy but are a part of the common language used in the aviation insurance business. Declaration Page – The first page of the insurance policy which gives pertinent information about the Risk such as: the Named Insured, the policy period, aircraft number and description, limits of liability and hull value,
territory, pilot clause. Sometime the declaration page is accepted as proof of insurance rather than getting a specific Certificate of Insurance. Aircraft Hull and Liability Insurance – Aircraft Insurance in the U.S. comes in two parts, Hull and Liability, issued in the same policy. In other parts of the world they are issued as two separate policies for the same aircraft. Aircraft Hull Insurance - Reimburses the insured for physical damage to the aircraft due to an accident or incident. Typically does not cover loss of use, diminished value or wear and tear. Aircraft Liability Insurance -
Protects the insured against claims for bodily injury and property damage caused by or arising out of the ownership, maintenance or use of the aircraft. Medical Payments - Voluntary payments to passengers for direct medical expenses as a result of an accident or incident. Paid without regard to legal liability. Purpose of Use - Defined in each policy, this spells out the approved uses of the aircraft under the policy. Some common uses are: Pleasure and Business - Noncommercial use of the aircraft for personal or business travel where no
charge is made for such use. Usually refers to “owner flown” piston aircraft but could include owner flown turbine equipment. Industrial Aid - Non-commercial use of the aircraft for business travel where no charge is made for such use, but the aircraft is flown exclusively by professional pilots employed for that purpose. Commercial - Commercial uses include but aren’t limited to operations such as instruction, rental, charter, aerial photography, banner towing, aerial spraying, logging and lifting. Additional Insured - A person or entity with an interest to be protected, but who is not a named insured. Breach of Warranty – An endorsement provided for the lien holder which guarantees the insurance company will pay for any damage to the hull even though the Named Insured may have done something to invalidate the insuring agreement such as violating the open pilot warranty. Subrogation – Gives the insurance company (in lieu of the Named Insured) the right to pursue a third party for
recovery of damages paid that they feel is responsible for the loss. HeliGPS is introduced to the market After two years of tests on thousands of acres HeliGPS was introduced to the market. HeliGPS is a GPS mapping and guidance software package that runs on any Windows PC. By utilizing standard off-the-shelf hardware it provides a very cost-effective solution to GPS guidance in forestry and agriculture applications. Pilots simply bring a netbook or tablet into the aircraft, connect a GPS receiver and start their work. Half or even quarter boom operations are properly recorded with the optional EK-45 device and the software may be controlled from a simple multi-position thumb switch. On November 2, 2011, about 0958 eastern daylight time (EDT), a Bell 206L helicopter, Canadian registration C-GDQH, was substantially damaged during an in-flight collision with terrain in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada. The pilot and two passengers sustained fatal injuries. Visual meteorological conditions reportedly existed in the vicinity of the accident site. Location: Noblesville, IN Aircraft: EUROCOPTER EC 130 B4 Injuries: 6 Minor. On November 3, 2011, about 1815 eastern standard time a Eurocopter EC 130 B4, sustained substantial damage during a hard landing near Noblesville, Indiana. A ground fire subsequently occurred. destined for the Indianapolis Downtown Heliport (8A4), Indianapolis, Indiana. The pilot reported that he checked internet weather services for his flight’s weather briefing. He indicated that the weather forecast showed visual meteorological conditions would be in place prior to the flight’s arrival. The flight departed 1IN8 and weather was reportedly good until ten miles north of Indianapolis Metro Airport. The pilot reported that the flight encountered rain and low ceilings. He hovered the helicopter over a field to evaluate the weather. The on-board radar indicated that weather deteriorated behind his route of flight and along his proposed route of flight. The pilot elected to divert to Noblesville Airport. Conditions continued to deteriorate and the pilot elected to perform a precautionary landing on a harvested cornfield. He circled to observe the field prior to landing. He approached the field from the north and while approaching the hover about 30 feet above the ground, the helicopter settled rapidly. He added power to slow the descent and the helicopter made a firm landing with about ten knots of forward speed. The right skid dug into the soft cornfield and the helicopter rolled onto its right side. The pilot attempted to pull the emergency fuel shutoff but was unable to do so. The passengers and pilot exited through the left side door. After ten minutes, flames were observed and the helicopter sustained a ground fire. Representatives from the Federal Aviation Administration and a technical advisor from American Eurocopter to the accredited representative for the Bureau d’Enquetes et D’Analyses of France accessed the accident site on November 4, 2011 and examined and documented the wreckage. The instrument panel and cabin area were destroyed by the fire. The helicopter was equipped with a vehicle engine multifunction display (VEMD) and a Garmin G-500. The VEMD and the Garmin G-500 contain non-
volatile memory and have been shipped to the National Transportation Safety Board’s vehicle recorders laboratory to see if they contain any data that is relevant to the accident flight. The Digital Engine Control Unit (DECU) was damaged and the DECU was not shipped. At 1815, the recorded weather at the Indianapolis Executive Airport, near Indianapolis, Indiana, was: Wind 040 degrees at 11 knots gusting to 16 knots; visibility 5 statute miles; present weather rain; sky condition overcast 600 feet; temperature 8 degrees C; dew point 8 degrees C; altimeter 29.92 inches of mercury. NTSB Identification: *ERA12LA063* Date: November 05, 2011 Location: West Palm Beach, FL Aircraft: Robinson Helicopter R22 BETA Injuries: 2 Minor. On November 5, 2011, about 1620 eastern standard time, a Robinson R22 BETA was substantially damaged during an autorotation, following a loss of rotor rpm near West Palm Beach, Florida. The certificated private pilot and passenger incurred minor injuries. The personal flight was conducted under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed for the local flight, which departed North Palm Beach Country Airport (F45), West Palm Beach, Florida, about 1530. According to the pilot, the wind was from the north-northeast at 10 knots, gusting to 20 knots, and he was circling a boatyard about 600 feet above the ground. The pilot planned to circle the boatyard while the passenger took some photographs. After completing some circuits, as the helicopter turned southbound, the pilot noticed a loss of airspeed. He moved the cyclic forward in an attempt to maintain airspeed; however, the low rotor rpm horn sounded and accompanying cockpit indication illuminated. When the horn sounded,
the pilot immediately entered an autorotation. During the autorotation, the pilot turned left 180 degrees to fly upwind, and radioed and emergency to air traffic control. During the autorotation, the helicopter impacted powerlines, trees, and a residence. According to a Federal Aviation Administration inspector, the helicopter sustained substantial damage to the main rotor blades and fuselage. The engine was retained for further examination and possible test-run. NTSB Identification: *WPR12LA029* Date: November 08, 2011 Location: San Diego, CA Aircraft: BELL 47D1 Injuries: 2 Uninjured. On November 8, 2011, about 1425 Pacific standard time, a Bell 47D1 landed hard after a loss of engine power during a practice autorotation at Brown Field Municipal Airport, San Diego, California. The pilot was operating the helicopter under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 91. The certified flight instructor (CFI) and the private pilot undergoing instruction were not injured. The helicopter sustained substantial damaged during the accident sequence. The local instructional flight departed Brown Field, about 1355. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan had been filed. The CFI reported that they had just performed a set of uneventful maneuvers in the traffic pattern, and decided to perform a practice autorotation from 1,000 feet above ground level (agl) to a power recovery. During the descent, the pilot undergoing instruction maintained directional control of the helicopter, while the CFI adjusted the rotor rpm. The pilot then began to reapply engine power at 250 feet agl, however, the engine did not respond. He then relinquished the helicopter controls to the CFI, and the helicopter landed hard. The helicopter sustained substantial damage to the lower fuselage during the hard landing, and the main rotor blades struck and severed the tailboom. NTSB Identification: *WPR12MA034* Date: November 10, 2011 Location: Pukoo, HI Aircraft: EUROCOPTER EC 130 B4 Injuries: 5 Fatal. On November 10, 2011, about 1214 Hawaiian standard time, a Eurocopter EC 130 B4 collided with mountainous terrain near Pukoo (Island of Molokai),
Hawaii. The commercial pilot and four passengers were fatally injured. The flight was operated under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 135. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and a company flight plan was filed for the local air tour flight. The flight originated from the Kahului Airport (PHOG), Kahului, Hawaii, about 1144. Witnesses reported that their attention was drawn to the helicopter when they heard some form of “woop wooping” sound. One witness observed the helicopter descending from the ridgeline; he reported that he observed pieces falling from the helicopter as it descended. Another witness, who was closest and had the clearest view of the accident helicopter, reported that the helicopter went “straight down” and impacted the ground sideways. All witnesses reported rain showers in the area during the time frame of the accident. Several witnesses reported that the accident occurred between rain “squalls” and one reported that it occurred during a heavy rain “squall.” NTSB Identification: *DCA12RA012* Date: November 11, 2011 Location: Mexico City, Mexico
Aircraft: EUROCOPTER AS332L Injuries: 8 Fatal. On November 11, 2011, a Eurocopter AS 332L Super Puma, registration XC-UHM, operated by Fuerza Aerea Mexicana (Presidential Use), crashed in a rural area south of Mexico City, enroute from Camp Marte, Mexico to Cuernavaca, Mexico. The eight passengers and crew were fatally injured. The investigation is being conducted by the Mexican Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil (DGAC). At the request of the Mexican Government, the NTSB has designated a U.S. Accredited Representative to assist the investigation. NTSB Identification: *CEN12WA063* Date: November 12, 2011 Location: Andratx, Spain Aircraft: HUGHES 500 Injuries: 2 Fatal. On November 12, 2011, approximately 1020 coordinated universal time, a Hughes 500E impacted terrain under unknown circumstances near Andratx, Mallorca, Spain. The pilot and passenger were both fatally injured. A post crash fire ensued. The local flight departed the Son Bonet Airport (LESB), Palma, Mallorca, Spain.

The helicopter sustained substantial damaged during the accident sequence. The local flight departed from a road in Oregon City, Oregon, about 2 hours prior to the flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan had been filed. The pilot reported that he was lifting bundles of Christmas trees from a field to a loading zone, utilizing a 25-foot-long steel line. Shortly after lifting a load, a bundle fell from the line. As the pilot repositioned the helicopter to reattach the bundle, the line became snagged on an obstacle on the ground. The helicopter pitched down, descended, and collided terrain. On November 15, 2011, at 0837 mountain standard time, a restricted category Williams Helicopter Corporation, UH-1H experienced a loss of power, made a hard landing, and came to rest on its right side about 3 miles northwest of the Valle Airport (40G), Grand Canyon, Arizona. The pilot stated that at as the helicopter descended, at altitudes of 50 feet and 30 feet agl, the helicopter yawed approximately 30 degrees to the left and right. About 10 feet agl, and almost zero airspeed, the main rotor speed slowed and then stopped. The helicopter fell the remaining distance to ground impact. The pilot cut himself out of his seatbelt, crawled out of the helicopter, and called 911 from his cell phone. NTSB Identification: *ERA12WA086* Date: November 25, 2011 Location: Quito, Ecuador Aircraft: BELL 212 Injuries: 4 Serious. On November 25, 2011, about 1640 coordinated universal time (1140 local time), a Bell 212, was substantially damaged when it impacted steep terrain next to the company’s helipad in Quito, Ecuador. The two Ecuadorian pilots and two onboard mechanics were seriously injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the local post-maintenance check flight conducted under Ecuadorian flight regulations. NTSB Identification: *CEN12FA091* Date: November 24, 2011 Location: Hackensack, MN Aircraft: Robinson Helicopter Co. R44 II Injuries: 1 Fatal,1 Minor. On November 24, 2011, approximately 1900 central standard time, a Robinson R44 II helicopter sustained substantial damage when it impacted water following a loss of control while maneuvering near Hackensack, Minnesota. The private pilot sustained fatal injuries and the passenger sustained minor injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and a flight plan was not filed for the 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The flight departed Alexandria, Minnesota, at an unknown time. According to local authorities who spoke with the passenger, the pilot was maneuvering for a landing near his residence. While in a hover over the lake, the passenger heard a “bang/boom” and the helicopter immediately yawed to the right and impacted the water. The passenger was able to swim to shore. The helicopter was recovered from the lake on November 25th. Postaccident examination of the helicopter showed damage to the fuselage and main rotor blades. The helicopter was recovered to a secure facility for further examination.
NTSB Identification: *CEN12IA096* Date: December 01, 2011 Location: Gulf Of Mexico, GM Aircraft: Bell Helicopter Canada 407 Injuries: 2 Uninjured. On December 1, 2011, about 1005 central standard time, a Bell 407 helicopter, N435PH, was successfully autorotated to the water following a loss of engine power while in cruise flight over the Gulf of Mexico. The helicopter was not damaged during the on water landing. The commercial pilot, and sole passenger, were not injured. The helicopter was registered to and operated by PHI, Inc., under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 135 as a non-scheduled air-taxi flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and a company flight plan had been filed. The flight originated from platform EC278-C, and was en route to platform EC261, both in the Gulf Of Mexico. According to the pilot, while en route to EC261 the engine chip light illuminated. The flight was abeam platform EC278-B at the time, and the pilot elected to divert for a precautionary landing. While on the base leg to EC278-B, the pilot heard a loud whining noise followed by a loud popping noise and the helicopter began to yaw. The pilot entered an autorotation, called mayday, inflated the floats, and performed a successful water landing. The pilot and passenger were able to exit the helicopter unassisted into a life raft and were picked up within 10 minutes. The helicopter remained upright for approximately 20 minutes before overturning. The helicopter was recovered for further examination.
