This latest step in Russia is also
part of AgustaWestland’s continuous effort to enhance its global presence through the provision of total support solutions for its customers. By doing so the company aims to support its customers at locations close to where they are based and have their business in order to maximize the operational effectiveness of their helicopters. The number of AgustaWestland Service Centres worldwide now exceeds 70, providing local support to customers, whilst a programme is underway to further expand this network of Service Centres. Established in 2005 and an AgustaWestland helicopter operator in Russia, HeliClub boasts highly qualified personnel, equipments and infrastructures to provide high quality maintenance services for up to 50 helicopters within its dedicated areas. HeliClub started developing further in 2010 with plans for the construction of a heliport featuring advanced hangars, workshops and buildings. The first three hangars have already been completed and will be soon ready to support HeliClub’s customers and partners.

The AS350 B3 helicopter proves its high-altitude performance with rescue on Mt. McKinley The AStar family of helicopters has become the platform of choice for a variety of missions throughout the world. From law enforcement to utility and from tour to air medical and Search and Rescue, customers across the globe depend on the performance and reliability of their AStars to complete their vital missions. An AS350 B3 helicopter from Denali National Park & Preserve performed a high-altitude rescue on Mt. McKinley of an injured climber, who had broken his leg in a fall near the summit. It was one of the highest rescues recorded on Mt. McKinley. “We would like to commend the pilot and everyone involved in this extraordinary rescue,” stated Marc Paganini, President and CEO of American Eurocopter. “Eurocopter helicopters are designed and built to meet and exceed the demanding missions of our customers. Rescues like this show the commitment of our customers to doing what it takes to complete the mission and their confidence in our aircraft.” The AS350 B3 helicopter is provided and operated by TEMSCO Helicopters Inc. from Ketchikan, Alaska, on an exclusive-use contract to the National Park Service (NPS) in Denali National Park & Preserve and is primarily used for mountain rescues. This rescue occurred at 19,833 ft. The summit of Mt. McKinley is at 20,320 ft., and it is known for
inclement weather conditions. The pilot of the AS350 B3 was Andreas Hermansky, a TEMSCO employee, and he knew that this was not going to be a routine rescue. “With a rescue of this magnitude at this altitude, the mission is very complex,” he said. With gusting winds and temperatures well below zero, confidence in the aircraft and the pilot’s and the rescue team’s abilities is a must. Hermansky explained that to be ready for a rescue at this altitude, he had gotten to know the area, the aircraft and its performance at altitude with flights to the summit. “Rescues up here are so much more than just flying an AStar. I have landed on the summit a couple of times in various conditions, so I was comfortable with the aircraft and knew it could handle this mission.” Mt. McKinley is a popular mountain for climbers from around the globe, and more than 1000 have registered to climb it this year alone. Joe Reichert, Denali National Park Ranger and South District Helicopter Manager, explained that each year they conduct evacuations from several locations and altitudes on the mountain. “We have on average about 15 to 20 evacuations and SAR missions each year. The AS350 B3 provides us with the high-altitude performance we need to cover Mt. McKinley and the extreme conditions we encounter. The
most recent high-altitude rescue is a perfect example of that.” The AS350 B3 from TEMSCO also provides a variety of mission support for Denali National Park & Preserve, in addition to search and rescue. “This helicopter gives us the power and flexibility we need to perform many functions throughout the preserve including resource management, hauling equipment, ferrying researchers to remote locations and repeater work,” continues Reichert. This multi-role appeal is also why TEMSCO has three AS350 B3s in its fleet. “The AS350 B3 is a true multi-role helicopter,” said Joe Hicks, Senior Vice President of TEMSCO Helicopters. “It has outstanding external load capabilities, and its hot & high performance allows us to haul core drills for geological surveys, assist the U.S. Forest Service with field
work, conduct firefighting missions, assist with construction, and perform SAR missions, like the one on Mt. McKinley.” TEMSCO (an acronym from the words: Timber, Exploration, Mining, Survey, Cargo Operations) was founded in 1958 in Ketchikan, Alaska. TEMSCO has operated AStars since 1983. It was one of the launch customers for the AS350 B3 in the United States and helped shape the development of the aircraft due to the wide variety of missions the company performs. “We took delivery of the second AS350 B3 in the U.S., and TEMSCO has really grown with the B3,” added Hicks. Its helicopter fleet has grown, as it has expanded its operations into tourism, hospital transport, firefighting, and other growing markets. TEMSCO will have a fourth AS350 B3 delivered at the end of May.

The Eurocopter X3 hybrid helicopter exceeds its speed challenge Marignane—Eurocopter’s X3 hybrid helicopter demonstrator has delivered on the promise of pushing the frontiers in rotary-wing aviation by surpassing its original speed target of 220 kts. demonstrating the compound aircraft’s performance, capabilities and maturity. The X3’s speed milestone was reached on May 12 during stable, level flight – with the hybrid demonstrator maintaining a true airspeed of 232 kts. (430 km./ hr.) for several minutes. This occurred during only the third mission after a scheduled upgrade that integrated the X3’s definitive gearboxes, enabling it to operate at full power. “Eurocopter’s teams have once again shown their ability to apply innovation as a cornerstone of our strategy in remaining the helicopter industry leader,” said Lutz Bertling, Eurocopter’s President & CEO. “Future helicopters incorporating the X3 configuration will offer our customers about 50 percent more cruise speed and range at very affordable costs,
therefore defining the future of high productivity rotary-wing aircraft.” Aboard the aircraft were Eurocopter test pilot Hervé Jammayrac and flight test engineer Daniel Semioli “We were impressed by the ease at which this speed objective was attained,” Jammayrac explained. “The X3 handles extremely well, demonstrating remarkable stability at high speed – even with the autopilot off. We are very proud of this achievement, which results from the dedicated efforts of all those who have worked on the project.” Eurocopter began X3 flight testing last September in a program that combines the excellent vertical takeoff and landing capabilities of a helicopter with aircrafttype fast cruise speeds of more than 220 kts. After the X3 achieved the initial true airspeed goal of 180 kts. (333 km./hr.) in November at a reduced level of engine power, the X3 underwent its planned gearbox upgrade and safety inspection. Since returning to flight last week, the
X3 quickly demonstrated its performance at full engine power, including impressive climb and descent rates, as well as excellent maneuverability, while also confirming the hybrid propulsion system’s outstanding capabilities for acceleration and deceleration. In the test program to date, the X3’s basic handling characteristics and stability have been validated throughout the aircraft’s flight envelope without the need of a stability augmentation system, which has been confirmed in testing performed with the autopilot disengaged and engaged. In addition, the hybrid aircraft has low vibration levels without the use of passive or active anti-vibration systems, providing flight characteristics comparable to those of the best traditional design helicopters currently in service. The X3 utilizes a Eurocopter Dauphin helicopter airframe equipped with two turboshaft engines that power a five-blade main rotor system and two propellers which are installed on short-span fixed
wings. This hybrid configuration creates an advanced transportation system offering the speed of a turboprop-powered aircraft and the full hover flight capabilities of a helicopter. The company envisions a wide range of utilizations for this concept, including long-distance search and rescue (SAR) missions, coast guard duties, border patrol missions, passenger transport, offshore operations and inter-city shuttle services. It also could be well-tailored for military missions in special forces operations, troop transport, combat SAR and medical evacuation – benefitting from the hybrid aircraft’s combination of higher cruise speeds with excellent vertical takeoff/landing performance. Flight testing of the X3 is being performed from the DGA Flight Test Center in Istres, France. The flight test program will continue throughout 2011 to explore the hybrid helicopter’s full flight envelope and evaluate all of the possibilities offered by this new technology.

Fighting fatigue Fatigue is an expected and ubiquitous aspect of life. For the average individual, fatigue presents a minor inconvenience, resolved with a nap or by stopping whatever activity that brought it on. Typically, there are no significant consequences. However, if that person is involved in safety-related activities such as operating a motor vehicle, piloting an aircraft, performing surgery, or running a nuclear reactor, the consequences of fatigue can be disastrous. Fatigue is a condition characterized by increased discomfort with lessened capacity for work, reduced efficiency of accomplishment, loss of power or capacity to respond to stimulation and is usually accompanied by a feeling of weariness and tiredness. Two key concepts can be derived from this definition: 1. Fatigue can develop from a variety of sources. The important factor is not what causes the fatigue but rather the negative impact fatigue has on a person’s ability to perform tasks. A long day of mental stimulation such as studying for an examination or processing data for a report can be as fatiguing as manual labor. They may feel different—a sore body instead of a headache and bleary eyes—but the end effect is the same, an inability to function normally. Fatigue leads to a decrease in your ability to carry out tasks. Several studies have demonstrated significant impairment in a person’s ability to carry out tasks that require manual dexterity, concentration and higher-order intellectual processing. Fatigue may happen acutely, which is to say in a relatively short time (hours) after some significant physical or mental activity. Or it, chronic, may occur gradually over several days or weeks. Typically, this situation occurs with someone who does not get sufficient sleep over a prolonged period of time (as with sleep apnea, jet
lag, or shift work) or someone who is involved in ongoing physical or mental activity with insufficient rest. General aviation pilots are typically not exposed to the same occupational stresses as commercial pilots (i.e., long duty days, circadian disruptions from night flying or time zone changes, or scheduling changes). Nevertheless, they will still develop fatigue from a variety of other causes. Given the single-pilot operation and relatively higher workload, they would be just as much at risk (possibly even more) to be involved in an accident than a commercial crew. Any fatigued person will exhibit the same problems: sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, apathy, feeling of isolation, annoyance, increased reaction time to stimulus, slowing of higher-level mental functioning, decreased vigilance, memory problems, task fixation and increased errors while performing tasks. None of these are good things to have happen to a pilot, much less if there is no one else in the aircraft to help out. Obtaining adequate sleep is the best way to prevent or resolve fatigue. Sleep provides the body with a period of rest and recuperation. Insufficient sleep will result in significant physical and psychological problems. On average, a healthy adult does best with eight hours of uninterrupted sleep, but significant personal variations occur. For example, increasing sleep difficulties occur as we age, with significant shortening of nighttime sleep. A variety of medical conditions can influence the quality and duration of sleep. To name a few: sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, certain medications, depression, stress, insomnia, and chronic pain. Some of the more common social or behavioral issues are: late-night activities, excessive alcohol or caffeine use, travel, interpersonal strife, uncomfortable or unfamiliar surroundings, and shift work. No one is immune from fatigue. Yet,
in our society, establishing widespread preventive measures to combat fatigue is often a very difficult goal to achieve. Individuals, as well as organizations, often ignore the problem until an accident occurs. Even then, implementing lasting change is not guaranteed. Lifestyle changes are not easy for individuals, particularly if that person isn’t in complete control of the condition. For example, commercial pilots must contend with shift work and circadian rhythm disruption. Often, they also choose to commute long distances to work, so that
by the time a work cycle starts they have already traveled for several hours. While a general aviation pilot may not have to deal with this, a busy lifestyle or other issues may lead to fatigue. Therefore, general aviation pilots must make every effort to modify personal lifestyle factors that cause fatigue. Get plenty of rest and minimize stress before a flight. If problems preclude a good night’s sleep, rethink the flight and postpone it accordingly.
Lifestyle Recommendations Don’t.. • • • •
Consume alcohol or caffeine 3-4 hours before going to bed. Eat a heavy meal just before bedtime. Take work to bed. Exercise 2-3 hours before bedtime. While working out promotes a healthy lifestyle, it shouldn’t be done too close to bedtime. • Use sleeping pills (prescription or otherwise).
Do... • Be mindful of the side effects of certain medications • Consult a physician to diagnose and treat any medical conditions causing sleep problems. • Create a comfortable sleep environment at home. Adjust heating and cooling as needed. Get a comfortable mattress. • When traveling, select hotels that provide a comfortable environment. • Get into the habit of sleeping eight hours per night. When needed, and if possible, nap during the day, but limit the nap to less than 30 minutes. Longer naps produce sleep inertia, which is counterproductive. • Try to turn in at the same time each day. This establishes a routine and helps you fall asleep quicker. • If you can’t fall asleep within 30 minutes of going to bed, get up and try an activity that helps induce sleep (watch non-violent TV, read, listen to relaxing music, etc).

NTSB Identification: *WPR11LA190* Date: April 06, 2011 Location: Torrance, CA Aircraft: BELL 47G Injuries: 1 Minor. On April 6, 2011, at 1355 Pacific daylight time, a Bell 47G helicopter sustained substantial damage when it impacted terrain following a loss of control during hover taxi at Zamperini Field (TOA), Torrance, California. The private pilot, the sole occupant, received minor injuries. The owner/ pilot was operating the helicopter under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the personal cross-country flight, which was originating at the time of the accident. A flight plan had not been filed.
The pilot reported that after he received clearance to take off and depart the field, he lifted off and made a right peddle turn. He stated that the helicopter “abruptly started to turn right hard and he had no control over the helicopter,” therefore, he immediately lowered the collective to stop the rotation. When the helicopter touched down, it immediately rolled onto its side shattering the cabin bubble, and the main rotor blades contacted the ground. Additionally, the fuselage was distorted and bent. NTSB Identification: *WPR11CA189* Date: April 06, 2011 Location: Salt Lake City, UT Aircraft: Robinson Helicopter R22 BETA Injuries: 1 Minor,1 Uninjured. The certified flight instructor said he and his student were flying the helicopter in the traffic pattern on the downwind leg. The student pilot was flying and he was told by the instructor to reduce the power to begin the descent for the base turn to final. The student reduced the power by approx. 1 inch of manifold pressure. The instructor took control of the helicopter and reduced the power by an additional 6 or 7 inches. He said that the student pulled the mixture control out to the idle cutoff position, which resulted in a loss of engine power. The student had intended to apply carburetor heat and instead inadvertently moved the mixture control, which was located next to the carburetor heat. The instructor turned the helicopter 180 degrees into the wind and simultaneously entered an autorotation from 300 feet above the ground. He maneuvered the helicopter to a new landing site, but subsequently landed hard. The landing skids were spread and the main rotor cut off the tail boom. NTSB Identification: *ERA11WA245* Date: April 08, 2011 Location: Santo Andre City, Brazil Aircraft: BELL 206B Injuries: 2 Fatal. On April 8, 2011, at 2030 coordinated universal time (1730 local time), a Bell
206B, was destroyed when it impacted terrain at the 5,000-foot level of the Serra do Mar mountain range in Santo André, São Paulo, Brazil. The pilot and the passenger were fatally injured. The flight, which originated at Porto Marina Astérias Heliport (SICV), Guaruja, São Paulo, Brazil, destined for Campo de Marte Airport (SBMT), São Paulo City, São Paulo, Brazil, was being conducted under Brazilian flight regulations. The helicopter was operated by Sabah Air Aviation under the pertinent civil regulations of Malaysia. NTSB Identification: *CEN11LA305* Date: April 23, 2011 Location: Massillon, OH Aircraft: D & D Aircraft Rotorway Exec Injuries: 1 Minor. On April 23, 2011, at 1540 eastern daylight time, a D&D Aircraft Rotorway Exec, an amateur built helicopter, collided with the terrain during an off airport forced landing in Massillon, Ohio. The pilot received a minor injury while exiting the helicopter. The helicopter received substantial damage. The personal flight was being operated under 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed. The local flight originated from a private field in Massillon, Ohio. The pilot reported that during cruise flight the engine revved to a high rpm. He initiated an autorotation to a sloping, plowed field. The tailboom contacted the terrain. The main rotor blades contacted the terrain and the tailboom, and the helicopter rolled over.
NTSB Identification: *ERA11WA276* Date: April 26, 2011 Location: Sulmona, Italy Aircraft: ROBINSON R22 Injuries: 2 Fatal. On April 26, 2011, at 1743 coordinated universal time (1843 local time), a Robinson R22 was destroyed when it impacted power lines near Sulmona, L’Aquila, Italy. The pilot and the observer were fatally injured. The flight, which departed an airstrip in Corchiano, Lazio, Italy, destined for a helipad in Sulmona, was operating under Italian flight regulations. According to Italian authorities, the crew was inspecting pipelines in a mountainous area when the helicopter hit the power lines, then impacted the ground. The accident investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of Italy. . NTSB Identification: *ERA11FA272* Date: April 30, 2011 Location: Indiana, PA Aircraft: Robinson Helicopter Co. R44 II Injuries: 3 Serious,1 Minor. On April 30, 2011, about 2030 eastern daylight time, a Robinson R-44 II helicopter was substantially damaged
following a collision with buildings in an urban section of Indiana, Pennsylvania. The commercial pilot sustained serious injuries, 2 passengers sustained serious injuries, and 1 passenger sustained minor injuries. The helicopter was being operated under local contract as an aerial filming flight under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and a flight plan was not filed. The flight originated from the Indiana County Airport (Jimmy Stewart Field), Indiana, Pennsylvania, about 1930. The helicopter was being flown with a 3-person filming contingent onboard. The purpose of the filming was to capture real time police activities. In particular, the helicopter was following the movements of police vehicles on the streets of Indiana, near the campus of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Several witnesses reported seeing the helicopter operating at a low altitude above the city streets. They characterized the helicopter as flying slowly and making 90 degree and 180 degree turns while in a level attitude. The accident site was confined to an urban area amidst several 2-story buildings. The helicopter struck the tops
of 2 buildings and came to rest along the side of one building in a nose down position, with the cabin section crushed upward on the left side. The first impact points were identified on the top edges of the two buildings, and were consistent with main rotor blade strikes.
First responders from the Indiana police and fire departments took charge of the accident site and expeditiously transported the occupants of the helicopter to a local hospital. There were no reported injuries to persons on the ground.

Swedish Armed Forces to use Sikorsky Black Hawk helicopters Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. has announced that the US Government has agreed to sell 15 Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters to the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (or FMV, which is the Swedish acronym) for operation by the Swedish Armed forces. The transaction will take place under the US Government’s Foreign Military Sales program, and represents the introduction of the latest and most technologically advanced Black Hawk model into Europe. Sikorsky is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp.. The Swedish Armed Forces will use the aircraft for medical evacuation, utility, and search and rescue missions. Sikorsky is slated to deliver six of the helicopters in 2011 and the remaining nine in 2012 under an accelerated production schedule. Sweden is a member of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan.
“We’re honored to support the Swedish Armed Forces, and we congratulate them for being the first European Union nation to choose this highly evolved UH-60M
of Sikorsky Military Systems. The UH-60M helicopter is the latest version in the long and highly successful Black Hawk family. It is flown by the US Army and provides additional payload and range, advanced digital avionics, improved handling qualities and situational awareness, active vibration control, and improved survivability compared with the predecessor UH-60L model. The Black Hawk helicopter is well known for its ruggedness, survivability and mission flexibility, having logged more than 9 million flight hours since the first model was introduced in 1978. Worldwide, approximately 3,000 are in operation today. Sweden will become the 26th nation to operate Black Hawk helicopters and only the second in Europe, where Austria operates UH-60L models. US forces have flown various Black Hawk models for 1.2 million flight hours to date in Afghanistan and Iraq without a single material failure.

AHS names Hirschberg as executive director Alexandria, VA -- The American Helicopter Society International’s Chairman of the Board, Philip J. Dunford, today announced the selection of Michael J. Hirschberg to be the AHS Executive Director, effective June 1, 2011. Hirschberg was selected unanimously over a field of highly qualified candidates. Outgoing AHS Executive Director, M.E. Rhett Flater, served the Society for 20 years and has overseen tremendous growth in the Society, including greatly enhancing its technical focus, reorienting it to be more international, advocating for the vertical flight community, and being more inclusive of subsystems and
integration companies. Hirschberg stated that “Rhett leaves huge shoes to fill. The entire vertical flight community is deeply in debt to his tireless efforts on its behalf over the past two decades.” Hirschberg has 20 years of aerospace experience, primarily in vertical flight. Most recently he was a principal aerospace engineer at CENTRA Technology, Inc., providing technical and program management consulting on advanced rotorcraft technology programs to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the Office of Naval Research (ONR).
