loomington United Gymnastics & Soccer (BUGS) has a rich history in Bloomington. BUGS’ owners, Tommy & Lesli Berry, are both Bloomington natives who both competed and then coached for Bloomington High Schools. Tom was also honored to play soccer for IU under Coach Jerry Yeagley.

BUGS has been in business nearly 20yrs now, but recently built a new 26,000 sq. ft. building that houses both sports under one roof. BUGS has 150 solar panels that provide 64% of the buildings electricity needs. Fittingly, this very local business is now located off of Tapp Rd., right in front of the historical Woolery Stone Mill, where it meets up with the Bloomington Walking/Biking trail. The trail is great for parents in the spring, summer, and fall. Parents can utilize the trail during their child’s class.

BUGS is more than just Gymnastics & Soccer.

• BUGS-Life Preschool is BUGS’ daytime, academic preschool for 3-5yr olds. This is a preschool that encourages kids to love learn ing. It’s a great mix of classroom time & active learning. Kiddos learn their A,B,C’s & 1,2,3’s, then get messy with hands on crafts and learn the art of working together through sports and active play. ~BUGS is also home to the Cutters Soccer Club (Monroe County Travel Soccer, Community Soccer leagues & its TOPS Soccer Program for special needs athletes).

• BUGS is proud to have a Special Olympics Rhythmic Gymnastics program for athletes of all ages.

• BUGS also houses BUFF (Bloomington United For Fitness).

BUFF is run by Monica Zurface and offers adult fitness in group or individual settings. Most importantly, mom or dad can get their work out in at the same time and facility where their child is having soccer or gymnastics class. Win, win!

Summer Camps

• Super Hero Soccer Camp- 4-7yr olds take their Superman skills to the soccer field. Soccer at this age is all about every child having a ball at their feet for most of the activities. Dribbling, juggling, shooting are all part of the fun when our super heros are on the field. But, campers also get to do crafts and take advantage of the gymnastics side of the gym with Zip lines, trampolines & our Tree house!

• BUGS Outdoor Soccer Camp at Olcott Park (also known to some, as Tommy Berry’s Soccer Camp) is for the more experi enced players 7-14yrs old. This camp is more business, but usu ally ends with an epic water fight on the final day!

• Gymnastics Camps- BUGS offers full day camp with extended day available for 7-12yr olds and half day camp for 4-7yrs olds.

• PeeWee Cheer Camp- Kids 4-7yrs can get their start cheering, building pyramids, basic gymnastics and more.

Convenience for families was a priority for us when we built the new building. We wanted to build a sports facility that would make healthy activities for the whole family available in one spot. BUGS has active options for kids and adults. But, if you don’t want to workout yourself, and you just want to watch your kids have fun… BUGS has you covered. BUGS gym has comfy theater seating and wi-fi on the main floor (close to the action) and on the mezzanine (where you can see over both the soccer and gymnastics sides from above).

But, BUGS is more than just sports. BUGS is about the kids and the community. It’s about giving kids a positive place to experience sport. We want to make sure that kids are having fun. That’s what will help them build a lifelong love of soccer or gymnastics. And that’s what will help them make healthy life habits. We’re also focused on helping to build kids’ inner strength and self-confidence. If they can conquer the challenges in sports, then they can conquer college and all kinds of hard things that life can bring…. Like being a teenager.

amp Rock on beautiful Lake Lemon offers kids a summer experience unlike any other in town. Bright afternoons spent fishing, canoeing, hiking, and swimming harken back to age-old camp experiences and traditions. Each week is filled with exciting programs including archery, art, swimming, and weekly themed field trips.While your child is enjoying these exciting activities, our trained, enthusiastic staff will be there to make sure they are safe and help them grow.

The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bloomington is to empower all youth, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as caring, productive and responsible citizens.

Camp Rock works towards this mission through new experiences that challenge campers to discover new things about themselves.

As one surveyed parent put it: “Camp Rock counselors are very well trained in the way they relate to children. I appreciate the way they care for the campers and acknowledge each child as they arrive each morning. Ever campers who are not typically the outdoorsy type absolutely loved camp and the activities planned.”

In 2018 100%​of surveyed parents felt that Camp Rock provided an environment in which their camper could be successful and 100% felt their camper learned some aspect of independence skills through attending Camp Rock.

Your camper’s morning will begin at the Lincoln Street Boys & Girls Club (311 S. Lincoln St.) where they will be able to choose from activities including foosball, billiards and group games. After all campers have arrived, we will load the buses and head out to Lake Lemon. Once there, your camper will experience a day full

Themed weeks for 2019 include Underground Explorer, Paws, Scales & Tails, and Time Traveler. Cost is $160 per week and scholarships are available for qualifying campers. Counselor in Training (CIT) opportunities are also available for youth entering grades 9-12. Morning drop off is 7:30-8:45am and afternoon pick up is 5:00-6:00pm each day at the Lincoln Street Unit.

One of Camp Rock’s most important goals is to give your camper a fun and exciting summer, but our most important focus is your camper’s safety. Camp Rock is accredited through the American Camping Association (ACA) in areas including program design, human resources, health & safety, transportation, aquatics, and operational management, meaning your child’s safety is not only our priority: it is what we do best.

he Indiana University Jacobs School of Music offers a unique opportunity for both the young and the young at heart to explore and refine their musical skills. Experience the world of music in an unforgettable way right in your own backyard. Our dedicated worldclass faculty and staff create an inspirational environment that affords our students the freedom to flourish. All levels are welcome.

The Pre-College Year-Round Programs feature a variety of classes catering to the skills of beginning to advanced students. Our programs offer an early start for children as young as six weeks with Musical Beginnings (class offerings from six weeks to five years). Students from ages 5 to 18 can participate in private, group, or ensemble classes in Ballet, Choir, Guitar, Harp, Winds, Piano, and Strings (violin, viola, and cello). Guitar lessons are available for adults also through the Jacobs Guitar Academy.

Students in junior high or high school may register for one of the Jacobs School Summer Academies in Ballet, Piano, Organ, Strings, Saxophone, or Percussion. Academies offered range from one to four weeks of study and, opportunities include, but are not limited to, lessons, performances, and master classes Courtesy with our internationally famous faculty and of IU Jacobs School of special guest artists. Housing is available Music on campus, or students may commute from home.

High school instrumentalists can also enjoy a unique camp experience through the IU Band Department at the Summer Music Clinic. There is no audition required.

Students participate in a week of ensembles, techniques, and improvisation culminating in a concert at the Musical Arts Center.

Students in their junior year of high school hoping to audition for college in pursuit of a music degree may enroll in the Summer College Audition Preparation workshop. With 10 different disciplines available for study, including composition and voice, there is a lot to choose from this summer! Classes are limited to eight students per instrument to ensure plenty of personal attention.

Ivy Tech Offers a Range of Experience Opportunities for Kids

L

ast summer was our family’s first time participating in Ivy Tech Community College summer camps and we are excited to return. Each day of camp my 4-year-old twin boys came home with cool and colorful projects and fun facts about our community, as the City celebrated its centennial. They were also excited about getting their very own art supply bag, T-shirt, and artist apron. The final day’s art show was a real exhibit opening; it was in an art gallery and family and friends gathered to see all the accomplishments from the two weeks of camp—the boys were beaming. My wife and I enjoyed this part the most and it was fun to see all the kids and chat with the other parents, while kids shared snacks and posed for pictures with their artwork. The boys talked about it for weeks.

Along with Ivy Arts for Kids, the Center for Lifelong Learning will be offering classes for kids of all ages. In College for Kids we’ll offer cooking, drawing, fiber arts, mosaics, model rocketry, painting, magic, character animation, and more. MCCSC EdVenture Camp

E

dVenture Camp is a full day summer camp experience hosted by the Monroe County Community Corporation at Summit Elementary.

Throughout the summer, EdVenture campers, who are grouped by age, blend educational activities with simple, fun activities incorporating science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). During this unique experience a camper could go from a 20-minute reading block to a science project to lunch and then to the swimming pool.

Blending education and fun, Edventure Camp helps prevent summer learning loss while keeping kids busy and moving.

Activities include daily group meetings, indoor and outdoor lessons, field trips, swimming, Pow Wow and much more. All campers receive daily breakfast, lunch, snack and a camp t shirt with enrollment. Morning Courtesy transportation is provided by MCCSC buses, and of MCCSC additional morning and afternoon extended day EdVenture programs are available on site. Camp staff are Camp first aid and CPR certified, and many are pursuing careers in the field of education.

he end of the school year is fast approaching, how will your kids spend their free time this summer?

Wildcare Inc. offers a day camp program like no other.

Campers have a chance to meet a new wildlife ambassador each day, from owls to opossums; and to learn about these animals up close by participating in a variety of activities and games. Our activities are educational and also a tremendous amount of fun.

Our games are tons of fun, and they give campers a chance to experience the world from a turtle or a goose’s point of view. Our educational programs are designed to encourage campers’ interest in sciences, and every day at WildCamp offers a new STEM program along with games and activities relating to that day’s program. Campers not only have a blast and make new friends; they’re also exploring a variety of sciences including ecology, biology, conservation, and environmental studies.

Daily activities include Arts & Crafts projects, outside games, indoor science projects, and activities like building nest boxes for wild birds. In addition, campers have an opportunity for hands on learning with our domestic animal ambassadors. Campers engage all five senses to explore the world around them and discover just how much we share in common with our wild neighbors.

WildCamp is a day camp experience like no other. It can be hard in our busy lives to take a minute just to absorb the

wonder and beauty of each and every living creature we share the planet with. Our goal is to educate every camper about the fascinating, beautiful, and sometimes elusive native wildlife around us every day. Our programs teach campers to respect and appreciate wildlife.

atching bugs in a jar. Playing on swings and slides. Digging in the dirt. Making secret plans with a new friend.

Kicking a ball. Splashing in a pool. These things use to be part of childhood summers, but today, many kids are inside and their time is all scheduled and directed by adults.

Research has shown that spending time outside benefits children (and adults!) in many ways. They get more exercise, experience better health, stay calmer, have better relationships with peers and adults, and express curiosity about the world around them.

At Karst Day Camp, there is a balance between creative free time and planned activities, most of them outside. Campers enjoy the Splashpad at Karst Farm Park, swimming twice a week, learning crafts, planting and tending a garden, cooking, hearing guest speakers, such as fire fighters, live animal presentations, playing games and sports, visits to state parks, the Indianapolis Zoo, the public library, museums, the county fair, cave tours, bowling, canoeing, hiking, and more.

They also have free time for reading, playing cards or board games, talking to friends or the counselors, coloring, or running around the playground. Indoor space is available for rainy

his summer, Monroe County Public Library will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA’s) successful Apollo 11 lunar landing mission. July 20, 1969 marked the first time a human stepped foot on the moon––an accomplishment that was regarded in that era as the single greatest technological achievement of all time.

Neil Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, and Michael Collins were the three NASA astronauts made famous for this expedition. Their success followed that of the astronauts who flew before them, whose flights into space were made possible by the innovations and problem-solving abilities of countless other scientists and mathematicians––some of whom we are just learning the names of today. But first, the mission had to be imagined; it had to start with a question––what’s out there? The challenge to find out was issued by President John F. Kennedy on May 25, 1961 when he set a dramatic and ambitious goal to land on the moon and return the crew safely to earth before the end of the decade.

Envisioning, problem-solving, discovering, and achieving success––the mission had a lot to celebrate! Here at the Library, it’s our mission to help you read, learn, connect, and create.

The Library’s Summer Reading Game, A Universe of Stories, is one way we encourage the community do just that.

Beginning May 24, children of all ages can visit any Library location (Main, Ellettsville, or the Bookmobile) and pick up a Summer Reading Game board. Game boards will also be available at the Book Bike in Bryan Park on the evenings of May 24 and June 7! Modified game boards can be printed on the Library’s website at mcpl.info/summerreading (you’ll find teen and adult summer reading info there too!).

Thanks to the Friends of the Library, all Summer Reading Game supplies and activities are free to Monroe County residents.

Designed to help children achieve their personal best, the Library’s Summer Reading Game encourages children to read for fun on a regular basis. Participants earn points and prizes by keeping a reading list, attending programs, taking weekly challenges, and discovering something new! Just let us know what you’ve discovered––we want to learn it, too!

Reading on a regular basis also helps children stay on course developmentally. Research shows that kids who continue to read during summer break are more likely to maintain and even improve their reading skills. Just 15–20 minutes

of reading a day can make a difference! Although intended for school-age children, caregivers can adapt the game for pre-readers. Reading aloud and sharing the joy of stories is a wonderful way to help preschoolers get ready to read!

Best of all––you get to choose what you read! Science fiction adventure stories, mysteries, funny folktales, realistic fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, or magazines? You decide!

onderCamp online registration opens for members Friday, March 1. Non-member registration begins on Friday, March 8. New in 2019: WonderCamp for seventh and eighth graders.

“New, this year by popular demand: Middle School Camps!” said Emmy Brockman, education director at WonderLab. “Our visitors and the kids we work with requested to continue our camps through grades 7 and 8. We have filled that gap.”

WonderCamps for kids in grades 7 and 8 are the result of three community partnerships. KitchenLab: Master Chef, in partnership with Bloomington Cooking School, has an advanced culinary curriculum as well an exploration of regional foods. Campers will be dropped off at WonderLab for check-in then walk one block to the Bloomington Cooking School.

KitchenLab: Master Chef runs from June 3 through June 7.

Middle schoolers will also enjoy TV Tech with WTIU, which runs from June 10 through 14. Campers will help produce and create original television and develop the technical skills that go with cameras, green screens, and video editing. Pick up and

drop off will be at WTIU on 7th Street.

It pays to register your middle schooler early. Register your seventh or eighth grader for either KitchenLab: Master Chef or WTIU TV Tech by or before April 1, 2019 and receive $20 off the price of registration.

Climbing Camp with the Hoosier Heights Climbing Gym is also available for middle school aged campers. This is the first year that a WonderCamp will be open for multiple age groups. Climbing Camp will be for kids grades 4 through 8 and runs from July 8 through 12. Campers will be dropped off at the Hoosier Heights Climbing Gym on Rogers Street.

Other WonderCamp Sessions, for campers of various ages, runs for seven weeks from Monday, June 3 through Friday, July 26. There is no WonderCamp the week of July 4. Camps are available for children grades K through 8.

All WonderCamps run full-day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with extended care available daily from 8 to 9 a.m. and from 4 to 5 p.m. Each camp will provide healthy snacks and a lunch break, and most will have a brief recess to give focusing young minds a break. Children should bring their own lunches.

“I encourage people to consider trying something new,” said Brockman. “Explore science and activities they aren’t familiar with.”

Whether young scientists want to explore the stars, design and create their own robots, or master the outdoors, WonderCamps have something for everyone!

Teaching Kids about Saving Money – The Fun Way!

K

irstin Moore is a Member Service Specialist at IU Credit Union, but she is also a single mother to seven year-old Kaden. She believes it’s important to teach children about money from a young age.

Kaden earns money doing chores. For instance, he helps sort through old toys, making three separate piles – books to give to his school, toys to give to his daycare, and toys to donate to Goodwill. For each trash bag full of toys/books that he donates, Kirstin gives him $5. While this teaches him about earning money, it also teaches him about donating and helping others.

“He put a car in the daycare pile and said ‘My friend, Carter would like this!’” Kirstin said.

Then, when Kaden asks for an expensive toy, Kirstin tells him he can buy it with his own money. “He asked me for $60 for a Lego set the other day, and he already has $42 of it saved,” she said.

While piggy banks may do the trick when saving for a new toy, Kirstin says opening a savings account for your child comes with its own benefits. “I like to let the kids get involved when I can.”

At the time of account opening, a member of the M3 Money Club will receive a membership card in his or her name. “Kids are always excited to flash me their M3 card,” Kirstin said. “It makes them feel like they’re a part of something.”

Summer is a Child’s Opportunity to Learn

F

or most children, summer is a time to leave classes and homework behind. However, when they return to school in the fall after the long summer break, students can find themselves struggling to catch up.

Skills and knowledge gained throughout the school year fade during the summer months. According to Sylvan Learning, the leading provider of tutoring to students of all ages, grades and skill levels, loss of content retention begins within 24 to 48 hours of learning unless the new information is reinforced or applied immediately. After a month without reinforcement, approximately 80 percent of what a student has recently learned can be lost.

Many families spend winter figuring out how to chase away cabin fever and endure frigid temperatures until spring and summer mercifully return. Parents thinking ahead to swimming pools and days lounging on the beach can put their daydreams to practical use by planning ahead for their youngsters’ summer vacations.

Youth recreational programs and summer camps can bridge the gap in care between the end of school and the day when classes resume. Due in part to high demand, parents who want to place their kids in summer rec programs or summer camps should being vetting such programs and camps well in advance of summer. The following are

• Ask for recommendations. Speak with fellow parents and trusted friends about where they send their children.

Personal recommendations can be very helpful, providing firsthand insight into a particular camp or program. Schedule appointments to visit camps that fall within your budget.

Take your son or daughter along so he or she can get a sense of what camp will be like.

• Explore all options. Camps come in more flavors than ever before. Certain camps may be faith-based ministries while others may focus on particular sports. Band camps and art camps may appeal to creative kids. Also, there are plenty of general-interest camps that offer various activities without narrowing in on any particular one. Parents may need to choose between a sleepaway camp or day camps, depending on which camp experience they want for their children.

While many camps are flexible, day camps do not have the same level of flexibility as after-school programs. Arrangements will need to be made if care is required after regular camp hours. Speak with camp staff to see which types of after-hours programs, if any, are available.

• Determine your camp budget. As varied as program offerings may be, camps also can vary greatly with regard to cost. Government-run camps may be less expensive than those offered by private companies. Day camps typically

cost less than those that provide room and board. Find out if a particular organization subsidizes a portion of camp costs. Scouting programs often have a dedicated camp and may offer affordable options for scouts. Martial arts schools and dance centers frequently offer camp schedules.

If camp seems out of reach, look into local summer recreation programs at parks or schools. Such programs may not be as extensive as those offered by camps, but they can quell kids’ boredom and keep children occupied during the day.

In addition to camp, remember to plan for some free days so children can just enjoy some downtime. Such days can break up the monotony of a routine and provide kids and families time to relax together.
