Top 3 Buffet Winners
Mr. Hibachi Golden Corral The Tudor Room and Taste of India (tie) By Hannah Alani halani@schurz.com
W
hether you’re on your way out to Brown County or are coming back into town from the lake, Best in Buffet Reader’s Choice Award winner Mr. Hibachi is the destination for good food at a reasonable cost. And there is plenty of on-site parking. Located on Bloomington’s east side, Mr. Hibachi offers a variety of multi-cultural cuisines. “We have Chinese food, American food and Japanese food,” said Susan Dong, Mr. Hibachi
owner. “We have a big salad bar and dessert, almost 200 items to choose (from).” All fresh and healthy, Mr. Hibachi’s food delights customers of all ages and backgrounds, Dong said. Winning the Best Buffet Reader’s Choice Award is a testament to the strength of Mr. Hibachi’s relationship with the community. Even more notable is the short time it took for Mr. Hibachi to establish itself. “Mr. Hibachi has been (in Bloomington) for two years,” Dong said. “As a restaurant owner, I am so thankful.”

Spaah! That’s The Rub Les Champs Elysee By Hannah Alani halani@schurz.com
B
loomington’s Spaah! is turning 18 this year. If age is not a testament to a business’s success, then winning the Best Day Spa Reader’s Choice Award certainly is. Locally owned and operated since 1995, Spaah! is on North Walnut Street in Bloomington. Spaah! offers customers not only hot tub soaks, but services such as hair styling, facials, massages and nails.
“It’s a very peaceful place to be,” said Donna Lafferty, owner of Spaah! Lafferty opened in 1995 after moving to Bloomington in 1990. The business spent its first 10 years on Bloomington’s southside. The business moved to its current location in July of 2005. “There wasn’t enough space for everything we needed,” Lafferty said. “Business doubled when we moved.” Lafferty is not alone in operating Spaah!. In fact, some of her employees have been with her in both locations. “We have a very good staff. Some of (the employees) have been with me for 10 to 15 years,” Lafferty said. “They know what they’re doing.”
Location, product quality and a experienced staff are not the only ingredients to running an award-winning day spa. “We are very laid back about things. We’re very approachable and friendly,” Lafferty said. “People like feeling comfortable. The prices are very reasonable. That doesn’t hurt.”

Top 3 Places To Volunteer
Habitat for Humanity Red Cross Lotus Festival and Middle Way House (tie) By Hannah Alani halani@schurz.com
A
fter having built 16 homes and engaged around 2,000 volunteers last year, it’s no surprise that Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County topped this year’s Best in Volunteer Opportunities Reader’s Choice category. “I think that Habitat is such a unique place to volunteer,” said Kerry Thompson, Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County Executive Director. “We truly need people of all skills.” Habitat volunteer opportunities range from baking cookies to feed those at work sites, to running the cash register at the
Restore, to pulling an eight-hour build shift. “We have such a plethora of different opportunities,” Thompson said. The majority of volunteers come from inside of Monroe County. However, Habitat has a number of groups that come from outside to assist in Monroe County builds. Franklin College and Whirlpool are regular outside volunteers. Every year, Whirlpool sends an executive team to construct a house in partnership with IU students. Once a family has moved into a Habitat home, they are expected to pay a monthly mortgage to Habitat. However, the relationship between Habitat and homeowners often does not stop there. “Many families choose to stay engaged or become volun-
teers themselves,” Thompson said. Habitat plans many homeowner education events, four of which are geared towards homeowners’ children. “We try to give them the opportunity to stay engaged,” Thompson said. Some of the children’s events are designed to encourage a willingness to pursue higher education. Habitat held an event at Ivy Tech Community College that used different lab simulations to show how fun jobs that require higher education can be. “Higher education is not our mission, ending poverty is,” Thompson said. “Getting kids to really think beyond higher education … is critical to fulfilling our mission.”

n a mission to “be continually inspired to bring you the Finest Men’s & Women’s Clothing and provide an equally Great Shopping Experience,” Andrew Davis is a one-stop shop for Bloomingtonians. Andrew Davis was voted the best in bridal and formalwear, men’s clothing and women’s clothing in this year’s Reader’s Choice Awards. “It’s great to be recognized by the community for what we have to offer,” said Macey Dale, Andrew Davis manager.
“It’s a testament to our customers. It’s nice to know we’re appreciated.” From casual to business, from formal attire to footwear, Andrew Davis offers the male shopper a variety of top name brands and styles that are “distinctive” to the occasion. “The quality of the goods is unparalleled in the area,” Dale said. “People come from out of state … (they are) very surprised by the quality of the clothes.” Andrew Davis introduced its selection of women’s clothing in the fall of 2012. Andrew Davis Women’s Fashion offers shoppers 16 different brands of gender-specific retail products, including skin care.
While the type of clothing they seek may vary, all customers experience the warmth of the Andrew Davis sales staff. “I consider many of our customers friends as well as clients,” Dale said. “People are greeted by their first names. .We know what’s going on in their lives beyond the clothes they have on their backs. “We know what they like what they don’t like,” Dale said. “It’s the personal touch.” Andrew Davis is on the south side of the square in downtown Bloomington. “I think its gives us a nice exposure,” Dale said. “People know they can just drop in when they’re downtown.”

Top 3 Places to Bowl
Classic Bowling Lanes Indiana Memorial Union Broadview Bowl Bedford By Hannah Alani halani@schurz.com
F
rom the weekend kids’ clinics to the competitive senior leagues, Bloomington’s Classic Bowling Lanes is a true family experience. Located on Bloomington’s north side, Classic Bowling Lanes has been owned and operated by Jennifer and Jeff Chamness since 2002. Classic Bowling Lanes has been in its current location since 1985 and is the winner of this year’s Best Places to Bowl Reader’s Choice Award. “That makes us feel very honored to be apart of this com-
munity,” Jennifer Chamness said. The family-oriented aspect of Classic Bowling Lanes attracts bowlers of all ages and experience. “It’s great exercise, its fun, all age groups can do it,” Jeff Chamness said. “It’s just a great time.” The Chamness family offers a variety of fun activities for bowlers, such as money-saving deals like Quarter Mania and Bowl Your Brains Out to the well-attended Cosmic Bowling on Saturday nights. “We have a lot of regulars that come in for specials throughout the week,” Jeff said. “Some of them we get to know. It’s nice to build that relationship too.”
Classic Bowling Lanes’ competitive leagues attract older Bloomingtonians. “We have a couple of senior leagues, for 55” and older, Jeff said. The senior leagues meet once a week. Classic Bowling Lanes provides the drinks and league members provide the snacks. “It’s good exercise for them.” The family recognizes the “decline” in bowling. However, they believe that the community will continue to appreciate the fun, family-oriented experience that bowling offers. “From families to college kids to older adults,” Jeff said. “It’s just fun for the whole family.”
