Printing and Engineering Design is a new camp offered for youth ages 14 through 18, to provide high school aged students with the tools to bring design ideas to life. As a guitarist of 20 years, I was also ecstatic to launch a new summer camp for people 16 and older – yes, adults too! Guitar Building will feature the nuts and bolts of building a guitar. Participants will learn what it takes to create their own swirldipped guitar and complete this process in only a few weeks. And last but not least, we cannot forget about our partnerships. At Ivy Tech Community College, we are very fortunate to be able to partner with so many great organizations that our region has to offer. Burton Kimble Farms in Orange County offers more than a camp but an experience on the farm. This year, kids will learn all about energy and caves in
this three-day series. Ivy Tech is also proud to be partnering again with Bloomington Playwrights Project with four summer camps in theatre and comedy. We also have a new partner this year with Arthur Murray Dance Studio who will offer four sessions of dance classes to help kids build confidence, social skills and to dance off that energy! As we head into this summer season, we must not forget the most important word – fun. Yes, our
camps will challenge, push creativity and help light those educational light bulbs, but we must not forget that summer vacation is fun, and that is what we should accomplish by participating in a summer camp at Ivy Tech Community CollegeBloomington.

s a kid, I used to head to Bloomington, Ind. every year for summer camp. It was a week where time stopped and no longer mattered. It was a week where days were based upon joyous activities and ended with campfires, where you met new friends, learned new skills and let the rest of the world disappear. It was a time where you created, were challenged and smiled. It was – the summer of fun! This year, Ivy Arts for Kids will take a global theme, “Around the World in 40 Days.” Each session will cover a different continent, learning and inspiring from global artwork. Campers will vacation in Europe, explore Asia, take an African safari as well as celebrate in South America. This camp will cover traditional art and ceramics, as well as the addition of music in sessions III and IV. Come travel the world with Ivy Arts for Kids! College for Kids will have several offerings in both morning and afternoon sessions. Morning sessions will blast off with Model Rocketry, magic in Abracadabra, sound engineering with Edit Audio Like a Pro, and 3D modeling and printing with 3D Design Biz. Afternoon sessions include Video Storytelling for Journalists, Mathematical History, and Number Theory. 3D

For outdoor sports, insist on a 100% UVA & UVB protection. UV damage builds over time, and glare can interfere with sight. Be sure your child has adequate protection. While no single device can prevent all injuries, sports eye protection that meets stringent ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) Standards for the sports being played can significantly reduce the risk of sportsrelated eye injury. oes your child always seem to be just a few steps away from the soccer ball? Is he/she always hitting the front of the rim in basketball or swinging late at a pitched ball in baseball? If so, your child may have a vision problem. Because all sports have different visual demands, an optometrist can assess your child’s unique visual system, recommend the proper eyeglasses or contact lenses, or design a vision therapy program to maximize your child’s visual skills for your specific sport. A thorough eye examination by your optometrist is a great place to begin “getting the winning edge.” Eye protection should be a major concern to all athletes, especially in certain high-risk sports and for those children who need corrective eyewear. Thousands of children suffer sports-related eye injuries each year, and nearly all can be prevented by using the proper protective eyewear. Approximately 600,000 documented sports-related injuries are reported each year in the U.S. (Tri-Service Vision Conservation and Readiness Program). More than 42,000 sports-related eye injuries require emergency room attention. (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) Yet over 85% of children DO NOT wear protective eyewear. More than 90% of all eye injuries can be prevented with the use of appropriate protective eyewear.

Young Women Writing for (a) Change
Offers *YPP (E] 'EQT in 2015 By Avery Smith, Young Women Writing for (a) Change
%
nother summer at the historic Poplar Grove Schoolhouse is fast approaching, and the 2015 Young Women Writing for (a) Change® summer camps along with it! This year we’ll offer creative writing camp for girls and teens entering grades 4-8. Every day will offer inspiration and careful guidance to help girls explore their writing voices, their connections the world and one another. In an attempt to better support the needs and schedules of working parents, we’re offering full day camps for the first time this summer. Broken into two age groups (elementary and middle school), our full day camp will keep participants engaged and fulfilled with activities including creative writing prompts, craft-making, and reading aloud. Young Women Writing for (a) Change creates a respectful and empowering community for girls and young women through careful listening and thoughtful feedback. Trained camp facilitators plan age-appropriate themes for the different groups. Participants of all experience levels are wel-
come. Activities are designed to inspire not only the most passionate of writers but also those who may come a little more hesitantly to the page. With a facilitator to camper ratio of one to four, each girl receives personalized attention throughout the entire camp experience. Again and again, new participants come to our circles insisting that they’re not “real” or serious writers—yet they leave camp with full notebooks and a deeper understanding of the importance of their words. Past writing camps offered themes like “Up Close and Far Away,” which incorporated the art of Georgia O’Keeffe to inspire writing and craft. “Pieces of Me,” focused on the metaphor of puzzles and the many components of ourselves. Whether the theme is Mirrors, True Nature, or Mapping Our Lives every camp experience invites personal reflection, discussion, and sharing to encourage participants to explore a deeper understanding of themselves, their world, and their unique ways of expressing their truth. The following words of one young writer after her summer camp experience sum up the experience well: ‘I just can’t believe how good it feels to be listened to.”

or a free, fun-filled, and interactive experience, contact the Indiana University Art Museum’s education department and arrange a tour or program customized to your specific needs this summer! The museum’s education department is happy to work with local families, campers, day care facilities, home schools, or organizations to tailor a fun gallery tour of the museum’s collection around a theme, activity, or age-group. The museum’s three permanent collection galleries cover a wide historical range from the ancient Near East to contemporary America. Our encyclopedic collection includes works from cultures all over the globe. We
can provide tour or gallery programs on a variety of topics—nature, animals, flowers, families, community, shapes, colors, history, stories, science, math, or literally hundreds of other themes! Whatever subject you choose, each tour or gallery program will be designed to meet your specific requirements for age-appropriateness and content. The museum’s education department can also provide a walking tour of campus architecture in the historic Old Crescent, adjacent to Dunn Woods, as well as informal tours of campus art including Thomas Hart Benton’s Indiana Murals in the IU Auditorium. We can also suggest additional activities around campus that will create a full-day excursion for your entire group! Please schedule your tour or
program by contacting Patsy Rahn, prahn@indiana.edu. The education department requires a minimum two-week notice to make the necessary arrangements. Entrance to the museum and tours are always free of charge. The museum has an excellent gift shop and café. Parking is available within easy walking distance at the Jordan Avenue pay-parking garage (across from the Musical Arts Center) as well as the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU). Bring your IMU parking ticket to the museum information desk for a discount validation. Free parking is available on Saturdays and Sundays in the parking garages on Jordan Avenue (across from the Musical Arts Center) and Fee Lane (behind the IU Kelley School of Business).

s summer approaches it is important to remind ourselves of the importance of sun protection. Not only is it important to protect our skin by wearing sunscreen, long sleeves and hats but it is also important to protect our eyes and the eyes of our children! As kids go out into the sun this summer at the beach, summer camp, sporting events or playing outdoors consider the addition of sun protection for their eyes. Kids tend to spend more time outdoors than adults so it is very important to reduce the amount of time they are exposed to the sun’s harmful UV rays. It is thought that almost half of a person’s cumulative sun exposure occurs by 18 years of age. Cumulative sun exposure over a person’s lifetime contributes to the risk of cataract development. The more time spent in the sun without protection leads to cataracts forming at a younger age. In addition, the natural lens of the eye becomes better at filtering out harmful rays as we age, so kids are more susceptible to damage from harmful rays without sunglasses than adults.
When shopping for sunglasses for your children it is important that the sunglasses you purchase block 100% of the sun’s harmful rays. The glasses need to block both UV-A and UV-B in order to provide the best protection. If UV-A and UV-B blocking is not labelled on the sunglasses, consider looking for a different pair that does. The color of the sunglass lens does not determine whether it blocks harmful rays or not. If your child already wears prescription glasses, there are still great options for sun protection. Consider a pair of prescription sunglasses or clip on sunglasses that go over their normal pair of glasses. Another alternative is Transitions™ lenses which can be added to their lenses when you fill their spectacle prescription. These lenses will darken while they are outside and lighten while they are inside. Transitions™ block 100% of invisible UV-A and UV-B light so they provide excellent protection for both kids and adults! So as it starts warming up this spring and kids start spending more time outdoors, plan ahead to protect their eyes from the harmful rays of the sun.
We SEE Kids DID YOU KNOW?
At the Atwater Eye Care Center, your child will receive the most comprehensive and outstanding care along with a full range of eyecare services and eyewear options. It’s never too early to combat eye disease. We treat children of all ages - from infants to young adults.
• Children should get an eye exam before the age of five. • Good vision is necessary for proper development and educational progress. • Untreated eye conditions can lead to vision loss.

onderCamp, the WonderLab Museum’s popular summer science day camp for elementary-age children, is creating exciting new opportunities for children to explore science and engineering processes in a friendly and informal setting. For example, we’ve added two new specialty camps that let campers delve deeper into topics, ideas, and skills. One of these is TV Tech, a full-day camp for children entering grades 4-6. Campers will have an immersive, behind-thescenes television production experience in the studios of WTIU on the Indiana University-Bloomington campus. ow! Bang! Crash! Monroe County Public Library is more than a quiet place to read this summer! We’re going to suit up and help you supercharge your way to the top of your game. Whether you’re a baby, a tween, or anything inbetween, we’ve got something for you. The best way to supercharge your summer is to find your passion and push it to the limit, and no matter what that passion may be, we’re here to help you find the resources you need to power up. entertain and amaze you with treasure hunts, wildlife programs, science experiments, wacky stunts, crafts, and lots and lots of storytimes and activities. So even if your superpowers are still hidden from you, we can help you explore and discover them, all while having a great time. And don’t forget the Summer Reading Game! On Tuesday, May 26, registration for Monroe County Public Library’s FREE Summer Reading Game starts at the Main Library in Bloomington, the Ellettsville Branch, and on the Bookmobile. Along with a host of milestone prizes, every child who completes the game will get to choose a brand-new paperback from the Library’s prize collection. This year’s Summer Reading Game is “Find
Your Superpower.” We’ll be here to reward children for reading, help each child find “that perfect book,” and provide fun activities for all ages that promote literacy. Children can also earn points toward prizes by answering our weekly computer question online, taking the weekly challenge at the Library, or attending one of our many Library programs. Research shows that children who read over the summer maintain their reading skills and can even make reading gains. Children who don’t read can lose two months of reading achievement every summer—with lifelong consequences. The good news is that children who read just 15 minutes a day during their break can advance their reading level. So come see all of the ways we can supercharge the fun of reading this summer!

Te Tennis has a unique scoring system that creates an environment that teaches children how to manage mistakes, overcome them, and learn from them. Children that learn to bounce back from mistakes in a positive manner and overcome them on the court have learned a valuable life lesson that assists them as they get older.

Since tennis is an individual sport, there is nobody on which to put the blame after a loss, other than on one’s self. After a loss, players must assess their strengths and weaknesses and
One of the keys to success in tennis is being able to sacrifice immediate pleasure in order to purse more meaningful long-term goals. Children who are dedicated to tennis will have to learn to prioritize their time to find additional time to practice. This minimized time spent watching television and playing video games and increases time spent pursuing their goals. The self-discipline learned in between the lines of a tennis court serves children well throughout their lives. Encourage your child to learn about the game of tennis and witness them learn valuable life lessons on AND off the court.

he year-round instructional junior tennis program at the Indiana University Tennis Center is a great place for children to have fun, get exercise, and learn a sport for a lifetime; but most importantly, it is a great place for children to learn valuable life lessons. As a USPTA (United States Professional Tennis Association) Elite Tennis Professional/High Performance Tennis Coach and as the Junior Tennis Program Coordinator at the IU Tennis Center, I hear one question repeatedly: “Why should my child play tennis?” Some of the obvious answers to that question are that tennis is fun, great exercise, and a sport for a lifetime. The not so obvious answer is that by playing tennis, children have the opportunity to learn a lot more than the physical
game of the sport. Below are some of the top reasons I believe children should play tennis.

environment to take risk students of all ages are free to soar with KidzArt. KidzArt provides the conditions for developing and nurturing creativity with the method and structure used in our classrooms, together with an extraordinary, proprietary, copyrighted curriculum that extends to all age groups. KidzArt Camp is held in a supportive and non-compet-
that your child has the best possible experience. Some of our instructors are elementary school teachers. Students will be encouraged to experiment with a wide variety of mediums, including three-dimensional sculpture, unique surfaces and more. Our themed camps are developed for ages 4-13 and offer a chance for students to spend more time explor-
ing different mediums as they learn about the world around them. Through the use of focus and relaxation exercises, brainstorming sessions, and our ‘mistakes are OK’ philosophy, KidzArt creates an environment that encourages kids to feel safe. Students grow from self-limiting beliefs to “I CAN” create! We chose art as the vehicle to create confidence because it’s really a lot of fun and kids can’t seem to get enough of it when exposed to the right kind of instruction and method! With KidzArt and its programs for all ages, students learn to see the world differently. We also make problem solving an exciting, fun, transforming experience! Our lessons are developed to be challenging without being frustrating. Our classes are designed so that students produce artwork with a “WOW” factor. KidzArt helps to create WINNERS and ultimately, THE ART INNOVATORS OF TOMORROW! Students at KidzArt Camp will walk away with a lot more than just an appreciation of art; they will learn how to overcome obstacles, how to focus their attention
through guided exercises and how to use their creative muscle. Safety, fun and creativity are our focus! Currently we have the following camp dates (more camps may be added)
