Welcome to the 71st annual
PERSIMMON FESTIVAL Mitchell, Indiana
September 23rd-30th, 2017 Main Street activities are September 25th-30th The theme for 2017:
On behalf of the Greater Mitchell Chamber of Commerce, it is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to the 71st annual Persimmon Festival. Our festival is one of the few festivals in Indiana that is entirely volunteer. It is one of even fewer festivals that is a week long. Mitchell might be small, but there are so many people willing to help. I invite you to take a some extra time to enjoy Mitchell’s historic downtown, which is filled with antique shops, unique businesses, and the Mitchell Opera House. Please visit the local businesses that continuously support the festival and the community. You will see several of them as sponsors in this book. My theme for the year is “Persimmon City Harvest.” I chose this theme to celebrate farmers and agriculture. We all know how hard our farmers work this time of year, whether it is getting acres and acres of crops in, or harvesting from a backyard garden. We depend on our farmers! Our grand marshals of the parade this year will be Jerry and Karen Rusch of Spring Mill Veterinary, and Kelly Kirk of Kirk Veterinary Service. We put trust in our veterinarians to care for our livestock, or even the family dog …or two and our cats! The folks of Mitchell welcome you to their hometown, which was established in 1853. We take great pride in hosting the Persimmon Festival, and hope you enjoy your visit. Elizabeth Freeman-Cammack General Chairperson of the 71st annual Persimmon Festival

Elizabeth is a partner at Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Haverly Funeral Chapel and C&F Crematory. She also is a board member for the Greater Mitchell Chamber of Commerce and the Mitchell Community Public Library. She is a member of Gamma Epsilon Chapter of Tri Kappa. Larry “Bamm” Caudell is serving as the second co-chair for the Persimmon Festival. A life-long resident of Mitchell, he is retired from Lehigh Cement Co. after more than 41 years of service. He also was with the Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department for 32 years and served 22 of those years as chief. He is a member of the Mitchell City Council and the First Baptist Church in Mitchell, where he serves as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He is married to Diana, a retired teacher with Mitchell Community Schools, and they have a daughter, son and four grandchildren. Andy Mullen is serving as the third co-chair for the Persimmon Festival. He made Mitchell his home in 2005 after marrying the former Amber Little. He works for the French Lick Casino as a slot supervisor. Andy is a 1991 recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash award. He is also an Honorary State Speaker of the House for the state of Indiana, and honorary Indiana State Fire Marshal, a severe weather enthusiast and the self-proclaimed biggest Cubs fan in Lawrence County. Andy has been married to his wife Amber for more than 12 years. It was his wife’s love of the festival that brought him here today.

Once again, this year, the Persimmon Festival committee has been working hard to bring our wonderful community another unforgetable September full of memories and annual activites that bring the citizens back together to catch up on old times and additions to our lives in the past year. As always the committee has taken particular pride in our annual parade wrapping up the festivities for the week.
Categories: .........................Persimmon Pudding Persimmon Novelty Dessert Awards: ......................................................Cash $500 for 1st Place Pudding, $100 for 1st Place Novelty
On Sept. 30, the committee asks that we all come together for the annual Persimmon Festival parade. Parade chairman Gary Rayhill has been working and brainstorming on how to bring smiling faces and awe to the folks of Mitchell. It will be filled with all the classics we expect and hope to see for example, the horse riders, local tractors collectors, and of course our local car show entries. We have a confirmation for the South Shore Drill Team for a repeat visit. In addition, there will be characters walking the streets to greet children and adults, too.
All pudding entries must be a 4x4 inch piece on a plain 8- or 9-inch paper plate, covered with either wax paper or plastic wrap: with no topping of any kind. Contest officials do not need the recipe at the time of the judging. Novelty dessert can be anything except cookies, making sure that persimmon pulp is one of the main and largest ingredients in the recipe. The recipe for the novelty dessert is needed at the time of judging and should include the name of the recipe and the name of the entrant on the back of the card. All recipes need to be on recipe cards, recipes written on sheets of paper will not be accepted. All rules are strictly enforced to make the popular contest fair for all entrants who opt to enter the events.
Then, of course, we have all the floats we can fit down the streets of Mitchell. The chairman has many invitations out and many confirming as we send them. So please come one and come all; bring the family and the kids because this year's Persimmon Parade will be one of a kind. For more information or to register for the parade, call Gary Rayhill at (812) 797-0427. A parade entry form also can be found at www.persimmonfestival.org.
