elcome to the 2018 Fall Foliage Festival… My name is Bob Strader, and this is my sixth year as the board president for the Morgan County Fall Foliage Festival. However, I have served on the board for 17 years. Heading up this festival again has been a lot of fun. The theme for the 2018 Fall Foliage Festival is “Old Memories, New Beginnings” and things are getting busy at the office, as we expect this time of the year. The Fall Foliage Festival will host yet another annual favorite this year with the Baby Photo Contest. All the kiddos, between the ages of newborn and 3 years old, are welcome to enter. Voting will take place at the FFF Information Booth on the square Oct. 11 to 13, and the winners will be announced at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13. Donations are made at $1 per vote. The three photos receiving the highest dollar amounts in votes will be named the winners. Prizes for the winners include a trophy and a small-prize package donated by local merchants. Following the contest, photos can be picked up from the Fall Foliage Office no later than Oct. 19. Come join the fun Oct. 11 to 13 to see your favorite baby win!

Farmer’s Day is fun for all ages Staff report
Folks young and old will get a chance to step back into the days of yesteryear during the Fall Foliage Festival’s Farmers Day, which will be held at the Morgan County Fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11. Sponsored by the Purdue Cooperative Extension, this fun event to educate the public about the importance of agriculture in Morgan County, using both modern and historical methods. It is free of charge and will have foot-stompin’, handclappin’ entertainment from Indiana Folk Music Society group Shade Tree Strummers, along with many others activities that will take you back in time! Displays will include: • Livestock: Beef, dairy, goats, swine, sheep, chickens, rabbits, llamas, horses etc. • Equipment: Tractors, corn shelling, Model T, etc. (Antique machinery Association). • Land Use: Agriculture equipment today and new technology. • Har vest : Crop and Grain
Production; Master Gardener Station. • Heritage Crafts: Extension Homemakers, Local Community Volunteers demonstrate crafts such as basket weaving, painting, spinning wheel, quilters, plants and fabric dye. • Food: Butter churning, bread making, apple butter making, beekeeping and honey. Participants include but are not limited to the MSD of Martinsville, Eminence Elementary, John R. Wooden, MOMD Head Start, Indian Creek Special Needs, Prince of Peace Lutheran Martinsville Pre-School and many more. Come see the animals, enjoy the smell of apple butter, and learn the heritage crafts from the Extension Homemakers. The Antique Machinery Association will provide demonstrations while youth participate in corn shelling. We often take for granted where our food comes from and the “food to table” process. Our Master Gardeners will be onsite as well as our FFA members to help answer questions. Learn about the buzz with bees, crops, plants, and gardening. Soil and Water Conservation District will also demonstrate the power of water. So make plans to attend on Thursday!

Are you ready for shiny chrome and cool cars? The Fall Foliage Festival’s annual car, truck, and motorcycle show and swap meet is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13! The show will take place at John R. Wooden Middle School, 109 E. Garfield St., Martinsville. For those participating in the show, the price to participate is $15 the day of the show, with registration between 8 and 11 a.m. Judging will take place from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., with awards being presented at 1 p.m. The awards list is as follows: • Best of Show • People’s Choice • Top 20 • Specialty Awards • Dash Plaques to First 100 Participants will be asked to parade through downtown following awards. The Morgan County Library will be hosting the annual poetry contest. Entries were due Oct. 5, and awards will be presented today at 5 p.m. This contest is free of charge and is sponsored by Martinsville Arts Council and the Morgan County Public Library. Awards include, plaques given to first-place winners. However, monetary awards will be given to all categories. Winners will receive $25 for first place, $15 for second place, and $10 for third place. Registration requirements are as follows: With the theme of “Old Memories, New Beginnings,” the contest includes a wide range of categories, including adult, high school, middle school and elementary. From Oct. 11 to 13, local quilters will showcase their skills during the annual Quilt Show, which will be on display at Key Bank during regular business hours, and with extended hours on Thursday. Winners will receive ribbons and all quilts will receive comments from the judge. Show is open to Morgan County Schoolhouse Quilt Guild, and Quilters from Morgan and surrounding counties. Categories include hand-quilted, machine-quilted, wall hangings, art quilt, applique and embroidery. Miscellaneous items may include totes, hand bags, bowls, rugs, home décor, bibs or clothing. Judging will remain private.

Fall Foliage Festival Parade: ‘Old Memories, New Beginnings’ Staff report
Another October is upon us, and another Fall Foliage Festival Parade, which will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14. This year’s theme is “Old Memories, New Beginnings,” and the title sponsor is the William and Helen Schwab Foundation, Inc. The 2018 Grand Marshals for this year’s parade are Doug and Paula Molin and Craig and Mary Fenneman, of the Artesian Group, LLC. The 2018 Parade Marshal is Ruth Rusie, who is also celebrating her 100th birthday this year. The parade will begin at Bell
Intermediate Academy, then go north on 2nd Street to Washington Street, then west to the courthouse square where the reviewing stand will be located. The parade will then head south on Main Street, then east on Columbus Street, then south on Home Avenue to Gray Street, and finally left to Martinsville High School. In total, the parade will cover about 35 blocks. Every year, there are about 120 parade entries, and the parade lasts about two hours, with an estimated 20,000 spectators. Eleven awards, which includes a plaque and money, are handed out to the winning floats in a wide range of categories, which
include: • Praise Worthy Float Award (for church floats only), $1,000, sponsored by My Joy 100.5 and Spirit 95 radio stations. • William D. Shields Float Award (for service club floats only), $500, sponsored by Shields Designs. • William A. Alexander Float Award, $500, sponsored by Neal & Summers Funeral & Cremation Center. • Mayor’s Float Award, $300, sponsored by Martinsville Family Eye Care. • Jimmy Nash Float Award, $200, sponsored by Costin Funeral Chapel. • Bette Nunn Float Award,
