mong the fifth annual Herald-Times Scholastic Stars are members of the National Honor Society, Eagle Scouts, class presidents and homecoming queens, but they are so much more. The Scholastic Stars of 2014 are not only outstanding students, they’re caring young adults who value their local and global communities. While studying to earn high grade-point averages, these 62 students ran on the track to prepare for the tournament, practiced over and over to draw just the right note from their clarinets and interviewed classmates and faculty to feature in their school newspaper. Between academics and extracurricular activities, they volunteered at animal shelters, rang bells to collect donations for the Salvation Army and gathered clothes to help people outside the United States. Even though they have already accomplished a great deal, the 2014 Scholastic Stars have hopes of becoming molecular scientists, surgeons, elementary school teachers, journalists, lawyers and accountants. A few have their sights on curing cancer and finding solutions to global hunger. Choosing 27 Gold Stars among so many high achievers from Monroe, Brown, Greene and Owen counties was a challenge. A panel of seven judges, three staff members from The Herald-Times and four community members involved in youth and education, made the selections for this year’s Gold and Silver Stars. The task was not easy.

“It became sometimes overwhelming to see the number of students who really were involved in a variety of service learning activities that in my eyes are as important as academics in developing the character of young adults, said Teresa Grossi, the director of the Center on Community Living and Careers at Indiana University. From her point of view, these well-rounded young adults are a reflection of their communities. “It’s pretty obvious, the value of education in our community and the community support of education by the number of the activities these students are doing, Grossi said. “What impressed me with everybody was their involvement with things outside of school. I just really admired that, said Mark Voland, director of Community Programs at Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Indiana. As a result of learning about this year’s Scholastic Stars, Voland feels, “Our community and the communities they go to next will only be that much better. It’s really encouraging. Every outstanding Gold and Silver Scholastic Star was recognized at a breakfast hosted by the H-T on May 21.

GABRIEL: “I liked that at my school I was able to play

soccer at South even though my school didn’t have any sports teams, but I think the biggest thing for me was being in such a small school with only 98 students. You get to know everybody. Knowing that the teachers really care about you, it’s like everyone is family there.

PAULITA: “My school has Project Lead the Way, so I

took all of my medical science classes there, and I thought that was really neat. It really helped me focus in that I wanted to pursue a medical career. They didn’t teach you what traditional biology classes teach you; they allow you to be more in the field. We got to dissect pig hearts, and kidneys, and eyeballs. It was just great.
