Craig Girvan Named New Daily Show Host Becca Shout

A

n estimated 90% of liberal-biased Highland Park residents are fans of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. So naturally, when Stewart announced he would be leaving the show, hearts were broken and tears were shed across the town.

Luckily for students at Highland Park High School, their absolute favorite history teacher/athletic director, Mr. Girvan, will be the new anchor of The Daily Show, so they will still get to see him four times a week. Mr. Girvan has been practicing his jokes and one-liners in his AP Government and Politics classes, while simultaneously preparing them for their next teacher, Mr. Stewart.

After several offers from various opportunities, including “food”-chain Arby’s and local-rival Metuchen (both to which Stewart scoffed and turned down), Stewart applied to Highland Park.

Stewart told the Phlegm that the process was “rigorous” and “challenging”, as many students are familiar with the tough hiring process potential Highland Park substitutes face. Mr. Girvan also had the opportunity to interview Stewart along with Seniors Willie Jacobs-Perez, Owen Fessant-Eaton and David Isaacson. Jacobs-Perez, who towers over Stewart at 8’7”, said Stewart was “shaking in his little boots.” Owen Fessant-Eaton, a self-proclaimed tea party maverick, recalls that “he didn’t really have that much experience. I mean yeah, there was that show, *belch*, but anyone can get a show.”

Stewart will start teaching next year, and will also be using his personalized curriculum, and will be providing all students with new textbooks. These include America (The Book): A Citizen’s Guide to Democratic Inaction, and Naked Pictures of Famous People.

Girvan will not begin hosting The Daily Show until September, which means he will continue as the Athletic Director until June. He will be taking an intensive political-satire course this summer taught by Mr. Gold and Ms. Marionni, to fully prepare him for his next career.

In the meantime, Stewart and Girvan will be teaching AP Government & Politics together, so Stewart can learn from the master. While a majority of the students are excited, some feel that the class will have an added liberal-bias that was not present when just Girvan taught it. Fessant-Eaton expressed his concern, saying “this country is already raising the next generation of socialists, and these really anti-American history classes aren’t helping”.

Nonetheless, the Highland Park Faculty family will be welcoming a new member next fall, Mr. Jon Stewart. As for Mr. Girvan, tune in to Comedy Central at 11 p.m. EST, September 8th, 2015 for the premiere of The Daily Show with Craig Girvan.

s temperatures increase and students begin to wear less clothing, the school begins to crack down on the dress code. Many remember the schoolwide anonymous campaign last spring that united students around the cause to end the dress code, and those issues are still as relevant this spring.

Mr. Soto, the Interim Superintendent, can be seen greeting students as they walk into school each morning. He also can be seen telling girls their shorts are too short by making them stand up in the front of the classroom and shame them in front of their peers.

Here’s the thing. While the girls who are wearing shorts above the finger-tip standard may be breaking a school standard, there is a better way to prevent “inappropriate clothing” being worn in school. The current method is better known as “slut-shaming”, which is what it sounds like. Basically, it’s not ok.

Every person has the right to do what they wish with their body. The current argument for school dress codes often comes down to distractions—for both genders. Because, you know, we girls will just go weak in the knees if a muscled guy wears a tank top in the summer and guys won’t focus during class because they see a girl’s bra strap. (As if guys don’t know we all wear bras… for the most part.)

So not only are these assumptions about those “crazy sex-driven teenagers” not a real problem, they also act as an excuse that promotes an objectifying culture. By saying that girls need to cover up their shoulders or upper thighs because guys cannot handle themselves suggests that it is the girl’s fault for wearing a tanktop that a guy might not be able to pay attention in class. And this goes

vice versa, for both genders. And don’t forget for all sexualities either!

Back to the shorts issue. It is a well-established fact (ok not entirely a fact but it can be accepted as one because it is almost universally accepted by anyone who takes a minute to think about it), that girls with bigger butts get called out for shorts more than slimmer girls. And it’s not necessarily the teacher’s fault for calling them out, because larger butts have more surface area that needs to be covered.

The big problem with this is that stores do not actually sell jean shorts—and don’t tell us not to wear jean shorts, that’s just not going to happen—that are long enough for the school dress code. Now, this could be an issue to bring up with clothing brands, but that is not really a battle anyone wants to take on. Go to any Target, T.J. Maxx, Hollister, Forever 21- and all the jean shorts are short shorts. Alright, maybe L. L. Bean has got something for you, but they like to charge around $40 for their jeans which is just ridiculous.

Now, it is not likely for a public school to do away with the dress code. It is also not likely that the school will get air conditioning.

So while this whole issue really requires a much deeper conversation, about gender equality and stereotypes and ethics. Look at that, teenagers cg about current issues. It’s not about showoff our bodies or anything like that. This is an actual issue that proes a culture that we’re not ok with.

And really, all the students want is to not sweat our balls off during class this spring semester. Is that too much to ask?

Population Pandemonium I

n recent years, New Jersey has housed several controversies—from Bridgegate to the blundered handling of government funds for Hurricane Sandy victims. But most recently, our state’s population has seized the sensational spotlight.

Last Friday, an intern at the United States Census Bureau noticed some peculiar statistics as she shuffled through old census reports. For some reason, The Garden State’s population was found distributed throughout several states in the country.

According to the documents, Oklahoma was home to 500,000 New Jerseyans, while 800,000 from Montana contributed to our state’s total population. However, by far the most extreme case of this resident reshuffling was Iowa, from which over 1,000,000 people were counted as living in New Jersey.

The intern posted pictures of these reports on Instagram, sparking a renewed national debate over how to most accurately count the number of people living in a state.

While these discussions have not nearly come close to the fiery arguments over population count and state representation that occurred in the early stages of this country, they have nonetheless shaken the country like a frustrated bartender vigorously mixing up cocktails for his picky customers.

According to local population analysis enthusiast Todd Kruger, the question really boils down to this: Could states like New Jersey simply pick out large numbers of people living in other states and call them New Jerseyans, adding them to the population of The Garden State?

The office of Governor Christie has declined to answer this question, choosing to remain silent on an issue that has considerably stained his reputation as a possible 2016 presidential candidate.

Jeezy J However, many New Jerseyans (those actually living in NJ) have passionately defended the action of their state, over a thousand of them gathering in Trenton this Monday to show support.

In an exclusive interview with The Phlegm, the leader of Monday’s demonstration, Nabetse Ohcan, explained his group’s position.

“New Jerseyans are Americans, right? And people from, let’s say, Idaho, are also Americans. So obviously those living in Idaho can be considered New Jersey residents.

It’s our constitutional right!”

What, exactly, he meant by “our constitutional right” was vague, but the sentiment he was expressing was lucid: the people of New Jersey want more New Jersey people from anywhere but.

Yet others vehemently disagree.

“It’s completely preposterous! You just count the number of heads within the boundaries of the state, and that’s that.

You can’t steal people from other states! How is this even a thing?” said Amar Venugopal ’15.

The Phlegm asked Ohcan, the activist leader, this very question, and he answered, “It’s a thing because New Jersey has to remain the most densely populated state in the US. Yeah, Alaska and Wyoming, don’t think we don’t see you! We know you’re going for our title, you greedy pigs!

feature C is for Cookie—Ice Cream Style Shea Naw

U

nited States citizens consume over 7 billion chocolate chip cookies every year. This number is expected to rise, however, with the advent of the newest chocolate chip cookie craze: the ice cream method.

This method makes cookie production more efficient and produces delicious cookies every time. The best thing about it, though, is its simplicity. You need only two ingredients to create a batch of these delicious treats.

2. Allow your ice cream to defrost for 5 minutes for easiest scooping.

3. Gently spoon through your ice cream and remove all visible chunks of cookie dough.

Ingredients •

1/2 gallon of any chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream

1 tbsp flour

5. Place chunks in a mixing bowl and gently combine with a fork. Add flour to maintain texture.

6. Grease a cookie pan.

8. Bake for 10 minutes.

9. Enjoy!

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 325° Fahrenheit.

7. Form small balls with the dough.

4. Place in a colander and rinse under warm water until all traces of ice cream are gone.

Angel Neanderthal have inspired his iconic wardrobe. If you’d like to deviate from classic spring florals, Simon suggests neon, saying that, “Floral was definitely six months ago.”

Luci Ryan ’17 takes her inspiration from Lady Gaga, especially her notorious meat dress. Luci loves to wear leopard print, incorporating it into “every article of clothing.” Spring is the time to get creative, so go all out!

For the DIY enthusiasts, spring is the perfect excuse for a crafty day of fun! Any accessory can be embellished with a little glue and a couple of fake birds or flowers.

This works especially well for hats—get ready for a day of non-stop compliments!

It can be hard to navigate the wet April weather. Merge practical and pretty with a poncho dress! Just wear your favorite colored rain poncho with a skinny belt to accentuate your waist - it looks good on any body type! If you’re not ready to commit to a dress, just adapt your accessories. An umbrella hat is both elegant and useful and it will keep your hands free and your hair dry on those damp walks to school!

It’s Not Your Ex Who’s a Monster A

well-timed performance of Beauty and the Beast by the Highland Park High School drama department serves to highlight the ongoing fascination with quirky romances we’ve all apparently long held.

A quick search on Goodreads for dystopian novels leads instantly to 14, 128 results; dozens of these made the bestseller list last year. Almost all of them were romances.

Apparently, we love to read about love, the more off-kilter, the better—falling in love with a human is so yesterday. ‘Dystopian romance’ now occupies the exalted status of an actual genre on many booklists.

Along with this new wave of dystopias and non-human Mr. Rights, many of our old classics have been undergoing serious reevaluations.

But what, exactly, classifies as a dystopian romance? From the results of several informal polls, we have here the new Top 5 Dystopian Love Stories, with bite-size summaries (although no vampires). All are either recent or upcoming, so check them out when you can. Don’t see them with a human date though; you’re too hip for that.

If two mutant radioactive beasts falling in love in San Francisco isn’t heartwarming, I don’t know what is. So what if their love has to involve several nuclear explosions?

Hollywood deeply admires the author’s commitment to a consistent rhyme in naming her novels, and as such, is planning to name movie #5, allegedly a Tide Commercial, Detergent. Details have not yet been leaked, but insiders say it explores the love possible between a high-quality brand and a consumer.

Love leads us to strange places, indeed. If you suddenly feel a romantic attraction to a non-human—it’s ok—you’ll fit in just fine at any bookstore. And what’s more, you’ll be entirely justified in calling your ex a monster if you break up. It’s a win-win.

If you’re smooth enough, you might even get your own movie, like the woman who married the Eiffel Tower. If you’re lucky, they might agree to a double-date with you and your sweetheart.

Batman v. Superman, upcoming in 2016, is another highly anticipated romance blockbuster. Hollywood is finally daring to go into the long-unexplored territory of “dystopian bromances”. Batman and Superman have each scaled buildings, saved lives, and broken hearts: now it’s time for them to do it in tandem.

Ted (and the upcoming Ted 2), are other great examples of conflict-turned-truelove. Foul-mouthed teddy bears are slightly less G-rated than shirtless werewolf Taylor Lautner, but no less cuddly. [Note: The mention of this title on a list of nonhuman romances may be legally incorrect, as the premise of Ted 2 is Ted’s legal status as a human].

50 Shades of Gray Although at first thought both characters are outwardly human, this gets a mention because of the ever-quoted Romney-ism“Corporations are people too”. Spongebob: Sponge Out of Water S Lie Silverman

pongebob Squarepants has been a cartoon icon ever since the show’s debut in 1999 and its reboot in 2005.

However, the show nowadays has not been well received by viewers due to the series jumping the shark, with horrible episodes like Good Neighbors, To Love a Patty, A Pal for Gary, Truth or Square, Spongebob, You’re Fired, etc. On a brighter note, the show’s creator, Stephen Hillenburg, has returned to work on the brand new movie, which means he might patch things up with his creation. So will the new movie bring Spongebob back to his former glory, or was Hillenburg right to end the show after the first movie?

The main plot of the movie centers on diabolical pirate named Burger-Beard who the sea steals the secret Krabby Patty formula, causing SpongeBob and his nemesis, Plankton, to team up with Mr. Krabs, Patrick, Squidward, and Sandy in order to get it back. It is simple and feels more like an episode of the show stretched into a 90 minute feature. In Spongebob, there are countless silly and fun adventures the characters embark on. What makes it even better is how it plays around by adding features like a post-apocalyptic Bikini Bottom and the usage of time-travel to save the Krabby Patty formula. Even more unique is the film’s beginning: a brief synopsis about Spongebob, Bikini Bottom, and the folks there allows new-comers to catch up quickly.

What truly is remarkable about the movie is the animation, both 2D and 3D. Most animated films nowadays use CGI because it is more marketable, but this movie applies a different approach. The characters are

presented in 2D throughout the first two acts of the movie, and become 3D when they reach the surface world. Although it does not make much sense considering the characters were still 2D when out of water in the first movie, the mix of animation with live-action is worthy of an A+ rating.

The movie gets creative with backgrounds, from time-traveling scenes to the inside of Spongebob’s brain, but the animation still

remains beautiful.

Another unique aspect about the movie is its humor. There some jokes that are easy miss, but a majority of the humor is simple and funny. Not only are there a number of good one-liners and brilliant uses of slapstick, but recurring jokes and charac-

ters from the series are also brought back.

There’s the “my leg!” gag that is heard any time an accident occurs, the song similar to the FUN song, Spongebob’s laugh being used as torture, and some jokes with the three main characters in the neighborhood.

Hillenburg wanted the series to end with the first movie, but because Nickelodeon wanted more episodes, Hillenburg passed

the torch to Paul Tibbitt and resigned as showrunner. This resulted in an influx of new writers who essentially turned the characters into caricatures of themselves.

Spongebob is now an insufferable idiot with a higher pitched voice, Patrick is a braindead jerk, Squidward is the Meg Griffin of the show, Mr. Krabs is a jerk

who usually cares more about money than anything, and the citizens of Bikini Bottom are jerks as well. However, the characters in the movie feel like what they once were, and although they do contain their new personalities, the writers do not go overboard with them.

However, all that glitters is not gold with this movie, since it contains a number of flaws. The main problem is the limited audience; the movie was structured for those who have watched the series already. Even if a brief synopsis of the characters and setting of the show is provided, the characters lack development and there are multiple times when statements related to the Krusty Krab, Bikini Bottom, and background characters are made, which new viers will not understand. Also, the secondary characters are usually used to provide comedic moments, to help out the main characters, or to exist simply because it is a Spongebob movie, and a nostalgic one at that.

If this film won’t bring Spongebob back to its glory days, nothing else will. Overall, despite being more for fans of the show, The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water is a good tie in to the show with a well-executed plot, great animation, solid characters, and a good amount of humor for the whole family. If you still love Spongebob, this movie will not disappoint.

For those who have not seen the show or don’t care for it, it may be best not to see the movie. While other Nickelodeon movies, like Avatar: The Last Airbender and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, have not turned out well, this movie is most definitely a wonderful exception.

1,2,3,4! I Declare a Toe War! Little Orphan

he wrestlers of Highland Park High School have been at it all season: sweating and working hard in practice; competing in meets and quads; watching their weight. Is wrestling the most physical, intense, and serious sport of our great school?

The wrestlers wondered if there wasn’t something better. After research, captain Sam Guerrero ‘15 talked to Coach Girvan about the possibility of starting a new kind of wrestling. Toe wrestling. “I grew up watching toe wrestling,” Guerrero said, “and I was like, DAYUM. I want to do that for the rest of my life!”

“I’m really excited about this great new sport,” said Mr. Girvan. “It’ll be a wonderful opportunity for our athletes.” Mr. Girvan has high hopes for Sam Guerrero and Jose Ruiz - students with exceptionally strong toes.

For those unfamiliar with this magnificent sport, toe wrestling consists of two players linking toes and attempting to pin their opponent’s foot to the ground. Just like wrestling, there are three rounds played. Each round alternates feet.

How does toe wrestling benefit the body?

Guerrero explains that toe wrestling helps your reflexes. This, in turn, “keeps you in shape for the ladies,” he said.

In the regular wrestling season, the Highland Park team would often have to forfeit matches because they didn’t have every weight class. This will no longer be the case with toe wrestling. This sport only has five classes of toe: tiny, small, medium, large, and jumbo. Mr. Girvan explained, “now we can compete for the state title because of the team’s ability to fill each class”.

The team’s practices have become even more rigorous. Instead of working the entire body, they focus intensely on their feet and toes. Strength exercises include push-

ing heavy weights using just the toe. The ankles are crucial as well. Like manly ballerinas, the athletes do reps of releves - a move similar to calf raises. These dedicated young athletes practice everyday after school for 2 hours so that their toes and feet are in the best possible shape.

“I want to be the best toe toucher out there!”, said Sam. Get ready Highland Park!

The toe wrestlers are here, and they’ve come to win.

Sleight of Hand Pranking League C Angel Neanderthal

ompetition was hot at this year’s rock-paper-scissor tournament.

Competitors trained for months beforehand to take part in the prestigious event which lasted 72 straight hours. Participants paired off, with the winner of the best of three tries advancing to the next round.

Her enthusiasm was shared by many students, who praised the competition for its excitement and commitment to the game.

Not all were as quick to complement the competition, though. Teachers protested, claiming that rock paper scissors promotes violence in schools. Ms. Yang, however, had a different complaint.

Over 60 students tried their luck, with half being eliminated in the first round. Classmates gathered throughout the tournament to observe and cheer on their friends.

“Paper beating rock? I mean in what world would that be plausible? It is scientifically incorrect!”

First time competitor Julia Liebell-McLean, ’18, didn’t make it past the third round. However, she was quick to praise the tournament, saying “It really gave me some useful life skills. I feel like events like these will help me prepare for college - I’m aiming for Ivy League and I won’t get there without this!”

Champion Tomas Sanchez, ’15, who had been preparing for 6 to 7 years, revealed that his strategy for winning is to observe his opponent and “look deep into their eyes to see whether they will go with rock, paper, or scissors.” Tomas said, “I always hesitate right before they go so I see what their fingers are about to do.”

Teachers took turns acting as referees to prevent cheating by competitors. However, the only referee interference came in the fifth round, after a long series of ties. The students involved were escorted from the school.

Little Blondie

W

hat began as a simple investigation into junior Lia Perez-Curran’s ’16 pranking league soon evolved into something much more complex. Extensive research into the matter provided a closer look at the rivalries within what some may call the underbelly of Highland Park High School.

Pranking is a new and emerging sport at Highland Park High School. According to Kyle Thieringer ’16, “Pranking is about the most competitive sport there is. It’s more competitive than football or even curling.

Some people think that videogames are a sport. That’s bogus.”

Many students may not know about the existence of these so called pranking leagues, much less their inner workings and complexities. Even Student Congress President Chris Zhou ’15 is oblivious to the hijinks.

When questioned about the schools’ pranking leagues, he responded, “Like, of legends? What pranking leagues?”

The pranking leagues in question were created by Lia Perez-Curran and Kyle Thieringer. Despite, or perhaps because of, the similar nature of the two leagues, they are having difficulties existing under the same roof. Kyle confesses,“Currently, I’m in a prank war with Lia.” Lia shares her plans for future pranks with The Phelgm. “I think in the future you can plan to see some schoolwide pranks on some of your favorite teachers, like Mr. McCrae.”

For those wishing to join either pranking league, there is an initiation process.

“They’re pranked on, then they prank you back.” says Lia of her league. Kyle is more cryptic, saying only, “That’s kind of confidential.”

Why prank? To quote the wise words of Lia Perez-Curran, “Pranks make you someone who no one will forget. Not only that, you will become the queen of the school.

Amen.”

Highland Park’s own, Thomas Li, varsity chess player has turned tables with his masterful skill and talent in the chess world. Not only has he dominated the court at school, but was also just named New Jersey’s Best Chess Player 2014. He looks to dominate the field this year, just as he did the last. The Phlegm caught up with him to hear about his experiences, and his aspirations for chess in the future.

When and why did you start playing chess?

I started playing chess at the age of two because my parents gave me a chess board and I immediately picked up the game.

Then I played my dad. I beat him the first time. So, then I challenged my mom who I knew had more experience than my dad.

I beat her too. I just kept winning and winning. It’s just stuck with me my whole life.

How have you improved the most?

I improve just by winning. Just playing people and winning, just getting better by beating better and better people. It’s hard to improve when you are already the best .

What are your goals for the chess team this year?

I know not everyone can be as great as me, but that’s fine. I want to get people to be just like me and to try and win every game that they possibly can. Their record may not be perfect like mine, but that’s fine because the goal is for them to improve and become just like me. The team really looks up to me, they see me as a role model. I can’t blame them since I am the best.

How do you stay in shape for the chess season?

Lots of brain exercises, math, puzzles, finger push-ups- you know the sort. It can get pretty rigorous, but you have to build up finger muscle in order to play for such long hours. Though, I usually beat my opponents in under 30 minutes.

Do you ever get a break, between practice and tournaments?

It’s all the same to me, I just practice winning. No breaks are needed for a winner.

What are your aspirations for your chess career in the future?

To teach everyone to be as good as me since I am already the best.

Patrick Liu is revered around the school for his knowledge in the subject of biology. This year, he uses his knowledge to get high scores on the Biology League tests. The Fling met up with him to learn about his experiences as a biolete.

When did you start competing in Biology League and why?

I started competing in Freshman year because I heard that many colleges are now recruiting for their university Bio-League teams.

What is your favorite part of competing in Biology League?

What are your pre competition rituals?

Biology League competitions are filled with tension before the competition. At least 20 minutes before the competition, I listen to music to get in the zone. I listen to a mix of the most dramatic Beethoven pieces possible and Smash music to get ready to crush with absolute precision.

What do Biology League practices consist of?

I wouldn’t know what the practices are like because I never go. I just bring my A game and dominate at competitions.

My favorite part of Biology League is when Mr. Kruger tells us all that the tests are easy-peasy pumpkin pie, but everyone always gets B’s and lower..

How do you train for Biology League?

Usually, I play Super Smash Brothers Melee to get my fingers nimble and ready to fill in answers quickly. For endurance training, I run long distance on the weekend. For the mental aspect, I take 8.5 hours of cramming to make up for the time I spent getting my fingers ready on Smash.

Hall of Champions: Ted Talks Shana Oshinskie

W

hen Ted Kubiak ’60 was growing up in Highland Park, pint-sized baseball players in dusty sandlots and seemingly enormous Little League fields dreamed of a chance to play in the most prestigious setting in the entire sport—the Major Leagues. Yet of all the Highland Park hopefuls, only one, Mr. Ted Kubiak, has achieved the supposedly unobtainable goal.

No one is more surprised by Kubiak’s success, however, than he is. Just as most do, he discarded his ballplayer fantasies before adolescence. During his senior year, he applied for and received a scholarship to study architecture.

Amidst his preparations, however, a scout approached him and asked him to attend a tryout camp after graduation.

Kubiak tried his best at the camp, but didn’t expect much.

By the end of the session, though, a coach approached him, and soon he had been signed to a Minor League team.

In just a few short days, his projected future changed drastically.

“Baseball was my life,” he said, “but I never thought it’d be my career… not one bit.”

For the next few years, Kubiak continued up the baseball ladder from the Minor Leagues to “winter ball” to the Majors, where he would stay for the next ten years. He played on many skilled teams, most notably the Oakland Athletics (now more commonly known as the Oakland A’s) during their three consecutive World Series titles.

one Kubiak truly treasured. “Unbelievable. Unbelievable.

I can’t even explain what that would be like,” he said, “being number one… You can’t get any better than that.”

Even the day-to-day games were exciting, at least at first.

Kubiak described the pressure and stress of playing every night in front of tens of thousands of screaming spectators as “exciting and nerve wracking,” especially before the experience and continued exposure began to sit in.

Yet this prolonged pressure also helped him forge a familial bond with his teammates. “You’ll hear that now from some guys from the teams that win,” Kubiak said, “they talk about how close they are. Well you are. You got to figure you’re with a bunch of guys for seven, eight months out of the year… You’re competing with each other, helping each other, depending on each other... so you get to be pretty close.”

Kubiak had also previously formed a tight bond with many of his high school friends, especially with Coach Joe Policastro, his best friend at the time. “Joe-Joe” and Ted spent countless hours playing sports together, even nailing a hoop to a telephone pole so they could play basketball closer to home.

Kubiak and Policastro were not the only boys at the time, however, that enjoyed playing pick-up and sandlot games.

“The only thing that was going on back then was sports,” he said, “And [movies]. Right across the street from [Highland Pizza], where that big apartment complex is

now? That used to be a movie theater, and every Saturday we’d go see a movie for about a quarter. You’d see two movies, get some popcorn or whatever, and that was your Saturday afternoon.”

Despite the vast differences in typical entertainment and movie prices, Kubiak says surprisingly little has changed about Highland Park. Though many of the businesses are now different, the overall aesthetic of the town has remained.

Many of the changes in store ownership, however, have affected the character of the town. A classic 50s sweet shop once stood in the place of Dr. Steven Dribbon’s podiatry practice. Across the street. a movie theater was torn down in favor of an apartment complex.

Overall, Kubiak reflects very positively on the town and his time living in it. He has recently retired from over 40 years in the sport of baseball after spending 25 years coaching and managing various Minor League teams.

Now he advocates for the active pursuit of passion and is finishing up his first book about his time in the baseball.

Though he walked the halls of HPHS half a century before any current students did, Ted Kubiak’s story contains timeless messages. Above all, his experiences speak to life’s perpetual changes, and how occasionally they can work for us all in the best way possible.

his year, the question that runs through the mind of the average New Jersey student is “Why do we have to take the PARCC test anyway?”

While instituting standardized tests always seems to arouse controversy, the recent adoption of the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) has particularly caught the attention of the parents, students, and teachers of New Jersey as well as other participating states.

The usage of computers for the exam has also left educators and students concerned about the influence that typing speed, glitches, and lack of familiarity with the testing system could have. According to the PARCC website, “These high-quality, computer-based K-12 assessments in Mathematics and English Language Arts/ Literacy give teachers, schools, students, and parents better information whether students are on track in their learning and for success after high school, and tools to help teachers customize learning to meet student needs.”

What happened to the NJASK (New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge) and the HSPA (High School Proficiency Assessment)? According to the New Jersey Department of Education (NJ DOE), after the Core Curriculum State Standards (CCSS) were adopted by the New Jersey Board of Education in June 2010, the Department “submitted a waiver application to the US Department of Education for relief from certain provisions of No Child Left Behind (NCLB)” in 2011. Without the financial assistance of NCLB, which focused on supporting the lowest-performing schools, the NJ DOE was accountable for meeting national and state standards on its

April Lopez own. Therefore, New Jersey was forced to create a new and more vigorous test that would meet the CCSS. The NJ DOE planned the first PARCC test for 2014-2015 three years ago with the intention of facilitating the transition from the NJASK and the HSPA to the PARCC and giving educators a preparatory period for the assessment. Even so, numerous teachers, students, and parents all over the state have protested the lack of sufficient time and resources provided to get ready for the test. Actual encounters with the practice PARCC exam have been minimal until this school year, the same year as the first release of the exam.

Some teachers feel that while the intention of the PARCC is reasonable and positive, its execution is feeble. According to an anonymous instructor, “The PARCC has been rolled out in a very inefficient way.

There seems to be a lot of conflicting information out there. I think the general idea of seeing where students are with being able to read complex nonfiction and fiction text is important, but the way they’re doing it is challenging and doing it on the computer, expecting schools to have 200 to 300 computers working at once, is really unrealistic. It has negatively affected our schedule so only one grade can go at a time. I think the general concept of the PARCC is good, but the way its been rolled out has been faulty.”

The PARCC is only the most recent development in New Jersey’s long history of shifting standardized tests. If you are a Highland Park High School student that feels apprehensive or awed by the upcoming change, remember that you are not alone; New Jersey students have stood in your shoes for many years!

If the new Student Council Proposal is approved, Highland Park High School will be updating our old fountains to greener, more advanced fountains, complete with bottle-filling stations.

pushing for these so that more people will have incentives to bring bottles and fill them up,” explained Council Representative Vivek Puduri ’15. He agreed that “people already fill their bottles up at the old fountains,” but these fountains are much more efficient and explicitly encourage reusable bottles.

A few students have been curious as to why we even need new fountains. Let’s break it down: there are six water fountains located around the high school. (Only five of them actually work, however.) They’re old and expensive, and only about three of them are often used by students. Furthermore, think about all the different public facilities you’ve visited: parks, museums, and even other schools. Surely you’ve noticed the different water fountains in different buildings. Some are simple, like the ones currently used in Highland Park. However, many organizations are picking up on the trend of sustainable, eco-friendly water fountains, which also feature bottle-filling stations.

Student Council is looking at two specific fountain models right now. One features both fountain and bottle-filling stations, and the other is solely for bottle-filling.

Many students support the proposal, regardless of which fountain model is picked.

“They’re really cool.” testified Alex Saff ’17 enthusiastically, “I would bring water bottles if we got those!”

T

wo genders exist in this world: male and female.

However, ever since the middle of the 20th century, society keeps bringing up new gender categories. Is it possible to become both genders? Can a guy identify as a girl? Is he free to wear dresses and bras? Can a woman do the same by denoting her feminine self? The answer is yes; any of these options are possible to anyone. One can easily find themselves as a transgendered person, one whose gender does not conform to their sex. However, those expressing this unique gender representation often receive the harsh and discouraging response of transphobia.

Similar to gay, lesbian, and bisexual individuals, transgender people face discrimination from the public, often for religious reasons. Some believe that God has created humans as one gender or the other and that can never be changed. Thus, they oppose those who change their gender, believing that they have committed a sin.

However, many people at Highland Park High School disagree with this basis for transphobia. “It’s obvious why transphobia exists, but it isn’t right,” senior Darcy Thompson told The Fling. “It’s another system of oppression and shame. There shouldn’t be a 3000 year old principle that puts people down.” Unfortunately, some people focus on these principles so much that they completely ignore the rights and feelings of a transgender.

On December 27th, a transgender teen named Joshua “Leelah” Alcorn committed suicide to escape the unbearable pressure from her religious parents. She wrote a final note on her now-deleted Tumblr blog, exposing her pain.

Her final wish was, “The only way I will rest in peace is if one day transgender people aren’t treated the way I was, they’re treated like humans, with valid feelings and human rights.” Many people, especially bloggers who are transgender supporters, mourn for her death and take her quotes in deep consideration.

While #LeelahAlcorn spreads like wildfire on the Internet, mostly on Tumblr and Twitter, Alcorn’s parents still refer to her as “their son.” Transgender supporters criticize them for mistreating and dismissing their child by misidentifying her gender, even in death. “That’s really sad,” Ms. Wilson commented about the issue, “It’s unfortunate that society tells [transgender people] that there are only two genders. It’s a shame that instead of understanding people, they force them to be something else.”

Meanwhile, the attempted suicide rate of transgendered people drastically increases. Its 41% rate is 25 times the rate of the general public, which is 1.6%. Most cases may include the same causes of Alcorn’s case, which indicates that pressure from transphobia surrounded by friends and family can lead to devastating results.

Drastically concerned, many people are determinate to solve the problem of transphobia, as well as many other gender discrimination issues. There are many support groups, such as the PFLAG, that try to alleviate the problems of many transgender people and discourage the transphobia that aggravates them. Bloggers spread positive messages to transgender people in order to offer them not only a positive image to the public, but also an encouragement to those who suffer from these problems. Junior Rebecca Tayts, while commenting on the effects of “religious reasoning”, suggests a simpler solution one can apply in everyday life: “A lot of times, religion makes it harder for older generations to understand their children. People need to be aware that some people aren’t always born the same way as they think they are. I think we need to be educated that some fears aren’t justified.”

In today’s society, gender issues are a big deal; queer people have the right to identify themselves as they wish and people are denouncing that right for unjustifiable reasons.

Instead of viewing them with disgust, we must remember that transgender people, like the rest of the world, are regular human beings living the same life as we have.

By the Numbers: Grades Chris Zhou

W

hen was the last time you checked PowerSchool? Pretty recently, huh? The truth is, you probably enjoy checking it because it always has a little surprise in store. The A’s, the B’s, the C’s, the D’s, the (hopefully absent) F’s... You might not be looking for straight A pluses, but you are looking for something.

The letters captivate you—they are, after all, reflections of what you have learned.

Wait. Remember that homework assignment from two nights ago? The one that you sped through during homeroom? The one that you put in 10% effort for? The one that you did for the sake of the grade? Nonetheless, all that mattered in the end was getting the A for the homework.

Right?

I conducted a quick study for the students throughout Highland Park High School, and the results were not sur-

prising. The survey asked 20 freshmen, 20 sophomores, 16 juniors, and 20 seniors, “On a scale of 1-10, how motivated are you by grades, with a one being you don’t care about grades at all and a ten being you only care about grades.”

As one can see, an overwhelming number of students consider grades a strong (external) motivation for working in school. As cliché as it may sound, societal pressures drive this way of thinking.

The statistics, and this entire discussion, reveal an ongoing debate in education. If grades are considered extrinsic motivators and if intrinsic motivation is naturally “better” than extrinsic motivation, then is it not unsettling that 87% of the sampled students considered grades a relatively strong motivator? Critics have argued that grades do not solidify knowledge. As author Paul Barnwell suggests,

grades do not always reflect what one has learned. An individual obtaining an A could possibly have learned less than someone earning a much lower grade. Then again, who cares? One got the A, the other one did not.

But if grades should not be the motivator, the catalyst that gets the work done, then what should? Certainly learning for the sake of knowledge is far too unappealing.

The greatest motivator should be interest. Pure, pristine passion. The inexplicable interest that drives Leo to play tennis is the same interest that compels Shu to explore Calculus further. It can be said in no other words, working for grades is a short term dosage; working by interest is the long term solution.

So, put yourself on the scale, from 1 to 10. Think about it. And then ask yourself, how motivated am I by grades?

The entire Fling staff would like to extend a thank you to Amelia Wilkerson ’17, the guest contributor of the month. Elisabeth Landis ’16 will report on her experiences in Israel for the Commencement Issue.

L

jubljana, Slovenia. Not until recently did this magnificent city and country become very familiar to me, Amelia Wilkerson, a sophomore at HPHS. Like a few others, I too have left our little town of Highland Park to explore the world and begin new beginnings.

Slovenia is a tiny country in Europe that borders Italy and vaguely resembles a chicken. I currently live in the capital city, Ljubljana. By city, I mean a city center with shops, cafes and restaurants, and a Central Business District, all surrounded by the Alps, lots of green land, and small villages. If I look out my school window I am greeted with a beautiful view of snow covered mountains, which is quite the norm here.

This school, Bežigrad Gimnazija International Baccalaureate World School, differs from HPHS in more than just the view. Unlike in the U.S., I am currently taking 12 different subjects: physics, chemistry, biology, math, English, Slovene, French, geography, history, art, music, and design. I have a set schedule for every day of the week (every Monday is the same etc.), however on certain weeks of the month I may not have physics first period, or I may have biology instead of chemistry. Also, if the teacher of my first or last period is absent we will not have class, and we get to come in late or leave early.

You’re probably wondering why I chose this randochicken-shaped country to live in for 6 months. To be honest, I didn’t think this was actually going to happen. When my mom suggested it, I thought it was a really great idea, but an unlikely one. Even after enrolling in school and purchasing my plane tickets I had this feeling that something would go wrong and prevent me from leaving. On top of that, I had two very upsetting nightmares about it. Then, just as my departure was nearing, I had a vivid and happy dream about the trip, and after that I was ready to go and start my new life.

Much to my surprise, everything came to a complete stop a week before I was supposed to leave. I got terribly sick and after two trips to the doctor and one to the hospital three days before my departure I thought for sure I was doomed.

That being said, life is full of surprises, and luckily the doctors gave me steroids to take the symptoms away. The trip was back on.

As I sat at my gate, waiting to board the plane, I contacted people I had not been able to say goodbye to in person, and really thought everything would hit me. But it didn’t; nothing even felt real. I didn’t know what to expect—if I should be excited, or scared, or both. What will the people be like? I wondered. Will they have good food? Will they like me?

After my first week of relaxing and exploring Slovenia with my host family, it was time for me to start school.

I don’t get nervous very often, but having to meet many new people and find my way around a new building really got to me. I hoped they would forget I was coming and not have my schedule ready or something. They did have it, however, and my heart sank as the headmaster guided me to my first class, physics. I tried to convince him someone had messed up my schedule because I had never taken physics before, and I already took biology last year.

Much to my surprise, no one had messed it up—students take three sciences every year, and I was going to have to accept that.

My first wake-up call came in math class. I had absolutely no clue how to solve any exponential equations, or how to find “x” in a logarithm. I didn’t even know what a logarithm was! That night, as my host dad tried to explain the problems, I got really upset and kind of shut down, so flustered by everything expected of me. I felt overwhelmed, and thought for sure this school wasn’t for me.

As I was trying to hold back tears, my host mom, Janja, came in and comforted me. She told me about how when she was in America she too felt isolated. Although her problems were different than mine, she was able to make it clear that I’m not alone, and that my host family is here to support and help me. Throughout these past two months, they have pushed me to try my best. From each mistake I have made in every assignment I have turned in to my teachers here, I have been able to better understand what is expected.

I ran into quite a few problems with these teachers, however, as many of them created a negative stereotype of a typical American student. Also, there are many different customs here. For example, we stand up when instructors come into the classroom, and remain that way until they

allow us to sit down. We must give them all of our respect, even if we do not agree, which can be very difficult for me.

Aside from these difficulties, I have created many fabulous memories. So far, my host family and I have explored the caves of Slovenia, finished renovating their beautiful house in a different region, watched plenty of chick flicks, shared many laughs, and even explored Venice. Unlike most Americans, we dedicate our weekends to spending time with each other, doing lots of fun activities, or just relaxing at home.

With school friends things have been a little different. I was expecting immediate connections with people similar to myself, but it hasn’t been that easy. There are only 15 people in my grade, and I was pretty intimidated by most of them at first. I felt unable to express myself because of their expectations. However, as I get closer with certain people I find it easier to act like myself. I have made several good friends and one in particular. I think the most interesting part of international school is that everyone is from different places in the world. I have classmates from Russia, Serbia, Georgia, Slovenia, Poland, the Czech Republic, and even Cyprus.

So far I haven’t gotten homesick, and I don’t expect to as my mom will be visiting soon. I have also been distracted by schoolwork and activities with my school and host family. My grade and the grade below mine recently went on a three-day ski trip. Each year, we have at least two excursions where we travel and stay overnight with our classes.

These excursions are beneficial because we are also able to get to know each other, and even some of our teachers, a lot better.

This entire experience has been like no other. Sometimes I’ll be walking down the street and think to myself how crazy it is that I’m in this tiny little country miles and miles away from my family and friends, but how incredibly grateful I am. If you are interested in traveling, I highly recommend getting your adventure on.

The Return of Mr. Lee T

he new year brought with it a snowy, bitter winter, hullabaloo over the colors of a certain dress, and one math teacher named Mr. Lee. The Fling caught up with him to get an update on the new-but-old teacher’s situation.

First off, how does it feel to be back?

It feels great to be back! I really missed being in a smaller school setting, I missed the students, the faculty and the staff, despite my short time here last year. I also missed hearing Ruck’s booming voice from all the way down the hall.

So what happened after you finished your student teacher training and left the school last year?

I finished up my school year with my last semester of classes and graduated in May with my Ed. M. in Mathematics Education. I then started applying for jobs in the summer and found a position at Dickinson High School in Jersey City.

Which classes did you teach there and which ones are you teaching now?

[At Jersey City] I taught 4 sections of Algebra 2 and one section of this SAT math prep class. [Here] I am teaching AP Calculus AB and BC, Foundations of Calculus, Math Support, and Probability and Statistics.

Any funny stories from Jersey City?

[This one’s] more of a reoccurring thing than a funny story.

Because the building was so old, (it’s actually a historical landmark, or so I was told) the heating system is extremely outdated. Because of this, it would generate an uncontrollable amount of steam below the school which meant it would set off the fire alarms all the time during the winter.

So there would be days in a row where we would have 5-6 fire drills a day in the freezing cold. Happened during rainstorms and the snow.

Not sure if this one is appropriate, but my mentor over at Dickinson always had these amazing stories about “night school.” He’d always tell me that night school at DHS was like a completely different world. You have the students who weren’t allowed in the building during the day, people just trying to get their GEDs, and a couple of people who committed crimes.

There was this one student my mentor had who was on parole. Every night that he’d come to school, he’d get really mad because he would always set off the metal detector via his ankle bracelet.

Your first name is a topic of controversy among some students. Those who had you last year know you as “Sangbum,” but in Powerschool you’re “John.” Can you explain?

Anyway, during a class, the student’s phone goes off and is told by my mentor to take it outside. The student angrily storms out of the classroom and returns a few minutes later and says to my mentor, “Here,” with the phone still on the line in his hand.

What? Controversial? Are you serious? This question is going in the paper? I don’t mind answering it—it’s just a weird question. Anyways, my full legal name is John S. Lee. My middle name, however, is the phonetic pronunciation of my Korean name: 상범 (Sangbum).

My mentor says, “Who is it and why do I need to speak to him?” The student responds, “It’s my P.O. (parole officer); he doesn’t believe that I’m in night school so you need to tell him for me.” My mentor pauses, baffled of course and hesitantly takes the phone from the student’s hand. “Hello?” The P.O. asks, “Is (student’s name) really in night school?” My mentor replied, “Yes, I’m his math teacher at DHS.”

But I’m still Mr. Lee to all of my students!

The P.O. pauses and then says, “Prove it.­” Confused and unsure, my mentor says, “A2 + B2 = C2?” After a moment, the P.O. responds, “Ok, have a good night” and hangs up the phone.

One of the funniest stories I’ve heard from him this year.

Not really. I’ve heard them all, though: Jonny, Sangbum, Bum-bum, Lee, Lee-Lee, [the] list goes on…

What do you like to in your free time?

I am an avid video gamer; working out; playing guitar, singing, drums; table tennis; snowboarding.

Since you love video games so much, do you have any recommendations?

How is Dr. Williams? Did you get to see him or talk to him often? Did you two sing together?

Hmm, well that depends on the type of gamer you are, doesn’t it?

Dr. Williams is good! He likes it there, despite all the craziness that happens. Every time I walked into his office he was always frantically doing something. You could tell that he really cared about the students in the school. Unfortunately, because he was always so busy, I never really got to see him. I think if I did, we probably would’ve sung a song or two together.

For RTS [Real Time Strategy], I’d have to say StarCraft [and] Age of Empires. For a more story-driven game, I’d say the BioShock series, Max Payne 3, Dead Space, Tomb Raider… ugh the list is never ending, I can’t name them all. For co-op multiplayer, I’d say Borderlands 2, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, Counter-Strike 1.6: Source. For those leveling/grinding games I’d say Fallout 3, Skyrim, Diablo II and III.

What did you do for lunch at Jersey City? What about now?

To be honest, I didn’t have time to leave the building and get lunch from outside the school. I usually packed something from home. There were occasional times where I’d go to this nearby pizza place that sold these huge slices for like 3 dollars. It was a great deal! [Now] I pack lunch or go to Highland [Pizza] or Sultan [Wok]. I used to go to Tastee Subs last year when I had more time but I haven’t gone [there] this year.

Cupcakes With Zest Alyssa Pilch & Wenyi Ouyang

ooking for a sweet treat to kick off springtime? Well, we have got just the recipe for you! Regular vanilla cupcakes are great, but they can be quite boring. Make your cupcakes interesting with a hint of lemon flavor. These scrumptious lemon cupcakes will surely have you buzzing.

Serves 30 Ingredients: Batter • • • • • • • • •

3 cups self-rising flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup unsalted room temperature butter 2 cups white sugar 4 room temperature eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons lemon zest 1 cup whole milk 2 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

Icing • • •

2 cups chilled heavy cream ¾ cup confectioner’s sugar 1 ½ tablespoons lemon juice

Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 375° F. Line the cupcake pans with 30 cupcake liners.

2. Sift the self-rising flour and salt together into a bowl.

3. In a separate bowl, beat the butter and sugar together using an electric mixer until it is a light and fluffy consistency.

4. Slowly beat in each of the eggs. Next, mix in the vanilla extract and lemon zest.

5. Very carefully, add ⅓ of the flour mixture into the butter mixture and beat on low speed. Keep adding the flour mixture in thirds. Alternate with half the milk and half the lemon juice after each of the first two additions of flour. Beat so that everything is just combined, making sure that there are no clumps. Do not over mix the batter!

6. Fill the cupcake liners with the batter so that they are each about ¾ full. Using ice cream scoopers really helps! Place the pans into the preheated oven, and bake them for approximately 17 minutes. When the cupcakes come out of the oven, make

sure to do the classic toothpick test.

Stick a toothpick into the center of each cupcake. If the toothpick comes out clean, that means they are done!

Allow the cupcakes to cool for about 10 minutes.

7. For the icing, beat the heavy whipping cream in a chilled bowl using an electric mixer, starting on low speed.

When the cream begins to thicken, add the confectioner’s sugar and lemon juice little by little, and remember to beat the mixture after each addition. Spread the icing onto the cooled cupcakes, garnish with some lemon zest, and enjoy!

Baking Tip: Most people do not have piping bags lying around in their kitchen, but there is a great alternative. It is more than likely that you have a plastic Ziploc bag tucked in some drawer, so why not make use of what you have? Scoop the icing into the plastic bag and seal it. Gather all the icing in one of the bottom corners of the bag, cut a tiny hole at the corner, and there you have it! A homemade piping bag!

Organization Spotlight I

n February’s issue, The Fling touched readers’ hearts by writing about Valentine’s Day. From trivia to love advice, we made sure to live up to our name (and tried to keep the heartbreaking to a minimum). The month of April brings an issue that crosses paths with the topic of love, and, unfortunately, can be caused by misconceptions of it.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. Yet some clubs, including Global Awareness Group, have already been working to combat the issue by selling boosters and baked goods. “Through donations, the women in need will receive therapy and a place to stay,” explains Louise Lu, a freshman that participated in the club’s fundraiser.

Women Aware is a nonprofit organization that helps women who are victims of do-

Adelina Branescu mestic violence. They provide counseling both in the form of therapy and a twenty-four hour hotline service. Additionally, the group runs an emergency shelter for victims in immediate need of a safe place.

Above all, Women Aware works to spread awareness in the New Jersey community. With an issue like domestic violence, which goes hand-in-hand with sexual assault, ensuring awareness of its damage is crucial. Even more important is teaching victims to recognize abuse and letting them know that it is never their fault. “It is important to raise awareness about this issue because more people will understand how to empathize with someone in an abusive relationship. Girls, in particular, will carry with them the knowledge that they don’t need to rely on someone else. They can escape,” explains Irene Westfall ‘18.

The horrifying truth is that many victims blame themselves for the treatment they receive. They believe that they love their partner and are being love back, or could be if they acted differently or received a higher income. Victims are manipulated into staying in these relationships. In other cases, victims are unable to leave dangerous relationships despite their wishes to do so.

In all cases, they are emotionally scarred and in need of help. By supporting Women Aware, however, you can not only provide relief for these victims, but also help end the abuse that millions will face in the coming years.

A Bridge Between Good and Bad

verall, I had a decent experience going to Bridge Turkish & Mediterranean Grill on the night of their grand opening. Despite the unfortunate long wait, the food pleased me immensely.

We were immediately greeted and seated by a waitress who seemed confused and overwhelmed by the crowd. After sitting down, my attention was drawn to the inviting atmosphere of the restaurant. It was abundant in calming warm colors, guaranteeing a relaxing meal.

The high ceiling also contributed to the ambiance of the room because it caused the restaurant to have more openness.

The restaurant was lavishly decorated in artistic plates and vases. In addition to those, there were various art pieces along the walls. One mood killer, however, was that some of these pieces were slightly artificial-looking because the images actually lit up. The other art pieces were classy and folksy paintings that went well with the general feeling of the place.

It took at least half an hour for someone to be available to take our orders. Due to the disorder and crowd, the waiting staff ran into some confusion, so we ended up being waited by a waiter different than our original waitress throughout the rest of the visit. This replacement waiter was extremely attentive and accommodating, and he was clearly very mindful of the customers and his duties.

Throughout this long waiting time, we were served continuous baskets of bread to help pass time. The menu provided countless options to choose from and even included vegetarian options. Most of the entrees on the menu were within the price range of around $15. I noticed that there was also a special lunch menu consisting of a large variety of options.

All items on this lunch menu were listed at $9.95; this might be a great way to try the restaurant at a lower price. Considering the portion sizes were relatively generous, the prices were reasonable.

Plus, paying the money was worth it as the food was delectable. Finally, a waiter took our orders and the wait for our food was acceptable.

First, we received fried calamari as an appetizer. They were hot and crispy, although a little greasy. I ordered the Kiymali Pide, which was dough filled with ground lamb. The flavor of the lamb melded excellently with the perfectly toasted dough. The food was very indulgent and satisfying—it was even worth the long wait. The portion size was just right and every element of the food worked well together.

The other members of my party all selected dishes consisting of lamb as well, but in different forms than mine.

I tried some of each of their dishes and concluded that the overall food quality of Bridge was superlative. The lamb in each of our dishes all had the same great quality with different twists to them. Overall, the food aspect of our visit was very pleasing.

Essentially, I was content with my visit. The disorder was merely due to first night jitters as well as an unexpectedly large crowd.

ighland Park doesn’t exactly conjure up an image of a sophisticated jazz scene, but there is more than meets the eye. Of course, there is the high school jazz band with whom most HPHS students are familiar. However, with Rutgers a mere 10 minute walk away, musical opportunities are not lacking.

The Fling spoke to Renee Delamater ’16 who has been playing the piano since age six, and has been a member of the jazz band since 7th grade. She values the experience, as it allows her to “get more comfortable playing in front of people,” and makes her solo performances less stressful.

Josh Siegel ‘16 also told The Fling about his experience with jazz and music in Highland Park. Siegel similarly began his music career at age six with guitar lessons that he continues to this day. He not only participates in the school jazz band, but is also a member of the Rutgers Youth Jazz Ensemble. This group of talented high school students meets once a week to jam and learn jazz theory, improvisation, and ear training. They perform at local events such as Rutgers Day. In addition to the two jazz bands Josh participates in, he has also recently created his own band with fellow students Jem Seidel ‘18 and Luke Schroeder ‘16. So far their only performance has been at Mr. Highland Park, but they hope to find some more gigs soon.

Although Highland Park may not be overflowing with musical opportunities, Josh informed The Fling that there is a New Brunswick Jazz Project that has a lot of jam sessions. This project began in 2010, and has created a lively

musical presence in New Brunswick, with continuous performances at the Hyatt, Hotoke, Tumulty’s Pub, and Destination Dogs.

The weekly shows highlight both wellknown artists as well as newcomers to the jazz scene, and are only a very recent development. However, musical opportunities seem to be coming more easily now, and the New Brunswick Jazz Project’s recent move to a nonprofit organization should speed up the process. A recent New York Times article highlighted this development of a jazz scene in New Brunswick.

The growing New Brunswick jazz scene is not completely spontaneous though, and has emerged from some very famous roots. Well known musician James P. Johnson was born in New Brunswick in 1894, and is best known as a pioneer in the genre of jazz piano and ragtime.

New Brunswick is also the birthplace of Mark Helias, an accomplished jazz double bass player. A number of other famous musicians also began their careers in New Brunswick, many having attended Rutgers.

Highland Park may be less vibrant than New Brunswick, but there are still a lot of musical outlets. PJ’s coffee, which recently closed, used to host a variety of groups performing live jazz. SpeakMusic Conservatory, a local music school, is attended by many of Highland Park’s residents. Although not all students there study jazz, many of the teachers are accomplished jazz musicians who encourage students to jam out and explore their musical interests.

With recitals as well as performances during the street fair and “Arts in the Park,” SpeakMusic may be just the thing to liven up Highland Park’s jazz scene.

This April marks the 13th anniversary of Jazz Appreciation Month, created by the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of American History to emphasize its importance in American culture. Each year jazz programs and concerts take place in April, culminating with International Jazz Day on April 30th. This year will be one of the first where Highland Park students don’t have to travel far to participate.

here’s a common proverb that goes, “April showers bring May flowers,” but the saying fails to mention what exactly May flowers bring.

For many, the answer is allergies. The Highland Fling caught up with some HPHS athletes whose respiratory problems can cause issues on the playing field.

Leo Goldman ’16, Christian Duran ’16, and Cross Country/Boys’ Tennis coach Tim Stark shared their experiences.

Do you have allergies or asthma?

Leo Goldman (LG): I have both, asthma and then allergies in the spring.

Christian Duran (CD): Asthma.

Tim Stark (TS): Both.

How long have you had allergies/asthma?

T

he spring sports season is generally the most promising in Highland Park. With baseball, softball, track and field, and boys’ tennis seasons approaching, it usually prevails as the most successful time for HPHS athletics. The Fling caught up with some of the key members of each team to hear about the upcoming season.

The victorious boys’ tennis team is prepared to succeed this year; they are likely to be the most successful boys’ team in the school yet again. Their captains, Maverick Lin ’15, Amar Venugopal ’15, and Leo Goldman ’16 will lead their many new members into a prestigious new setting—the White Division.

Leo Goldman talked to The Fling about the spring season and said, “We’re in the White Division this year, so all the matches will be more intense, especially for the new guys. That being said, we have a lot of new guys who represent a good future for the club and can learn a lot from being in the White Division. Therefore, I challenge the whole team to work harder than they have in any past year from challenge matches to states, and encourage everyone to come down to our matches and support because it will be an exciting year for boys’ tennis.”

Maverick Lin, who won the state tournament as a sophomore, will be competing for the title again this spring.

Meanwhile, the baseball team will be looking to build upon the success from the previous season. While the captains are yet to be determined, Mikey Kovalchik ’15 and Ryan O’Shea ’17 are some of the team’s most noteworthy players.

Ryan O’Shea talked about the upcoming season and said, “We have a young talented team so we should do very well this year and in seasons beyond. We are looking at competing every game and going ‘500,’ and making states.” The baseball team will likely continue the success they’ve had in years previous and excel this upcoming season.

The track team is the largest team in the school, with students participating in all sorts of events ranging from javelin to the two mile. The captains this year are not yet decided, but some of the notable senior members are Becca Chant ’15, Zoe Hudgins ’15, Owen Fessant-Eaton ’15, and Luke Schroeder ’16.

The Fling caught up with Luke to hear about the upcoming season. “I think this season is going to be a great year for both the boys’ and girls’ teams,” he said.

“We have a lot of talent in a wide range of events. To name some, we have junior Ogemdi Nwadike for our short distance sprints, senior Caleb Aspy and I in the medium distance sprints, and Ethan Bull ’17 and Kyle Thieringer ’16 in our distance events. We also have great talent in the field with juniors Cameron Petkov and Christian Duran, and in the jumping events with Farhan Rozaidi and Noah Pointer. We hope to have very strong 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams this year and I encourage anyone who is interested in joining spring track to talk to myself or Becca Chant.” With a wide variety of events taking place, track is always a very exciting sport. This year the excitement and success will continue as the spring season approaches.

The softball team did well last season but they are looking to improve even more.

The captains for this season will likely be Carly Aversa ’15, Nyahjah Boykins ’15, and Zoe Shombert ’15. Carly Aversa talked about the upcoming season and said, “The majority of the team is made up of seniors. I don’t remember our exact record from last year but this year we will come out strong and win the majority of our games in the Gold Division!” The softball team is looking forward to a very exciting season as it will be the last one for a lot of the them!

Although HPHS may not be undefeated in all of our school sports, we fare very well during the spring season. With warmer weather and new teams will come exciting games. So, try to make it out to a softball or baseball game, a tennis match, or a track meet to watch athletes in Highland Park succeed!

LG: For my entire life.

CD: Since I can remember, pretty much forever.

TS: I was diagnosed with allergies and asthma when I was two years old. I was using a nebulizer four times a day until I reached middle school. Around the time I reached middle school, I was getting allergy shots once a week and they really helped curb my issues with asthma.

What sport(s) do you play?

LG: I play soccer in the fall and tennis in the spring.

CD: Track, soccer. That’s basically it.

TS: Growing up I played baseball, basketball and soccer (through middle school) and ran cross country in high school. I do not play as many organized sports anymore, but I remain active by jogging, lifting weights and playing various sports. Coaching tennis, cross country and basketball keeps me extremely active throughout the year.

How do your allergies/asthma affect how you play your sport?

LG: In the fall it’s not so bad, I keep an emergency inhaler just in case for when it gets cold, and in the spring it’s generally a mixture of allergy medications from a daily pill to eye drops when needed to anything else that will help. Spring gets pretty bad.

TS: Any type of athletic activity becomes tremendously difficult with the slightest obstruction to the airway. I have the greatest difficulty in the fall. My asthma is most affected by the cold and temperature changes. I have to limit my outdoor activities when the temperature begins to drop.

What do you do to combat that?

LG: In the fall, nothing really, in the fall I’m pretty good. In the spring, it can affect your endurance. I mean, after you’ve been running for so long without being able to breathe clearly... It gets in the way.

CD: I don’t do anything. I have an inhaler, but I don’t use it.

TS: The best way to combat asthma is to take steps to prevent it. I take an allergy pill daily and do my best to stay hydrated. I use my inhaler before any rigorous physical activity.

Do you have any advice for other people playing sports with allergies/asthma?

LG: Just take any medication that will help. Never say no to drugs.

CD: If it affects them that much, they should use their inhalers and try to pace themselves correctly, otherwise they’re going to suffer a lot.

TS: Playing sports and exercising can actually help in managing your asthma.

Physical activity has many benefits, one being increased lung strength and capacity. This helps in both preventing attacks and managing attacks when they occur.

This is a gradual process and athletes with asthma should be very cautious and aware of the signs and symptoms of asthma attacks.

Do you have any funny/ interesting stories related to your allergies/asthma?

LG: I had an asthma attack once if that’s funny... One time I brought an entire big pack of napkins to a tennis match because my allergies were so bad, and I had to use the napkins to blow my nose in between every point, and my opponent, as you can probably imagine, was so weirded out.

CD: I was hospitalized once.

CD: I only sprint for track, you’re out of breath and light headed, but especially for soccer, if you’re playing in the winter you’re gonna get winded pretty quickly and

These are just a few of the pitches that Mikey Kovalchik has in his repertoire.

After spending much of his time perfecting his pitching and batting, Mikey has worked his way up the ladder to become the captain of the baseball team.

When did you start playing baseball?

I started playing baseball mainly for fun when I was 5 years old. I started playing competitively for a travel team at the age of 7.

What is your favorite baseball pitch?

My favorite pitch is definitely my slurve.

It’s a combination of the slider, a pitch that jerks downward, and the curveball, a pitch which curves sharply as it approaches the plate . This pitch is definitely the money maker and I get most of my strikeouts with this pitch.

How has your role on the team changed from last year?

Last year I was just a player on the team.

This year, I’m going to be counted upon to lead and set an example for the underclassmen. I have always had a high baseball IQ and hopefully this year, I can share my knowledge of the game with my teammates.

What have you done this past off-season to improve?

Batting has always been my biggest weakness so this off-season I spent countless hours in the baseball warehouse just working on my batting technique.

What goals do you have for yourself and for the team?

A goal for myself this year is to pitch well to give the team the best chance of winning and to improve my hitting from .240 to .300. A team goal is to win at least half of our games so we can advance to states.

Are you planning on playing baseball in the future?

I will be playing baseball next year at Middlesex County College and hopefully, I will do well enough to get a scholarship to a 4 year university.

Do you have any role models?

One of my role models would definitely have to be Derek Jeter because he is a complete ball player. He is one of the most talented baseball players to ever play and is very mature off of the field.

I am a great multitasker so balancing work with practice isn’t an issue for me. However, I do try to complete homework assignments and projects whenever I have free time. I also use my weekend time wisely by greying important assignments done first and less important assignment done at my leisure.

Balance is key when spinning, gliding, shuffling, and launching. If you have good balance then you will be able to have a good throw. If your balance is poor then you risk falling or severely injuring yourself.

Are you more motivated by improving upon your previous records or by helping the team place in meets?

I view the track team as a machine. In order for the machine to function efficiently each part has to work on its own! In my opinion the biggest competition that I have is with myself. So yes this year I look forward to advancing independently; the events that I specialize in are discus and shot put.

Have you faced any serious/semi-serious injuries that have prevented you from throwing? Was that frustrating?

What is your favorite baseball memory?

Thankfully no. However, throwing does take a toll on my knees but it’s nothing that I can’t handle.

My favorite baseball memory is either pitching a full game shutout against East Brunswick Vo-Tech or pitching a complete game against Dunellen.

Describe your greatest accomplishment.

My greatest accomplishment in field was sophomore year. It was me against a 7 girl

How hard is it for you to balance schoolwork and long practices? Can you offer some advice to those that are currently balancing similar schedules?

Who is your greatest role model in throwing?

The only role model for throwing that I have is my older sister Alyssa Hudgins.

Over her career as a thrower she has traveled across the country and was ranked 5th for the All-American Indoor Nationals Women’s Champion. For my last year I look forward to working closely with my sister in order to make this year my best year yet.

How important is it to you and the team that people come to your meets?

When I see the bleachers filled for every track meet, I get excited knowing that people have come out to see our hard work pay off. It is imperative that we have the support of our school during meets. The more the better!!! By having the support of spectators and fans our performance as a team increases.

Swim to Win T

he swim team, one of Highland Park’s lesser known teams, competed in their GMCs on January 31st.

However, competing at GMCs, which many teams at Highland Park High School take for granted, turned out to be difficult to navigate.

Although the swimmers were allowed to compete in two individual events each, the school was barred from competing in relays and scoring points.

Jake Callahan ’15, co-captain of the swim team, explained, “The rule is if you don’t practice as a school team, you don’t get to do dual meets. We could practice as a

Camryn Kozachek Highland Park team but we don’t have the funding, and we don’t have the interest levels.”

He continued on to say, “Essentially, all the big schools didn’t want us to swim and get points because they didn’t want their own chances of winning hindered by us beating them.”

Despite the setbacks, Highland Park’s swim team represented the school very well according to Noah Callahan ’17. “I think everybody on the team got a best time, and we even had one swimmer (Lucas Irvine ’15) get second place in an event. I got two best times, and I placed in the top 20”

Jake Callahan, who placed fourth in both his events, and Thomas Li, who placed fourth in the 100 meter butterfly, were responsible for other notable victories at the GMCs. Rookie member Alyssa Pilch ’18 shared her impressions of her first experience at GMCs. “Because there were so few people, I really felt like everyone was out there cheering for me for all of my events, and it was really supportive and it was really fun. Swimming is just such a great team building sport.”

Most members of the team share her enthusiasm for the sport.

“At GMCs, you find a lot more pride in the team you’re swimming for than in any other meet I’ve ever been to,” Jake Callahan said. “Swimming turns out to be a lot more fun when you’re swimming for your school and you’re having fun doing it. It’s a lot more fun because there’s a lot more passion and pride.”

Looking towards the future, the current members of the swim team would like to see a greater emphasis placed on swimming at Highland Park High School. Noah Callahan says, “Pretty much every school in the county has a swim team, and it’s a growing sport.”
