A Fashionable Issue A Letter from the Special Issues Editor

Fashion. Personally, I’m not a big fan of the word. It’s almost, in today’s society, become synonymous with the privilaged, the vain, and sometimes – the undeserving. I hear fashion and think of daddy’s connections, superspoiled label whores, chai lattés and pretentious somebody’s pretending everybody else is a nobody. I think fake. But this issue in your hand, it’s very real. You are holding the first ever Hilltop Special Issue dedicated wholly to the “f ” word. We took the world of fashion, and tailored it in that unique way only us Howard students can. Within these pages you have it all. Want tips on how to select that perfect power suit? Look no further. Guys, tired of using that bar of soap as a makeshify shampoo? (Don’t lie, you know you’ve done it.) Find out what products us fellas can use for hair as healthy as our beautiful counterparts. Speaking of the ladies, there’s a few things in here you’ll enjoy as well. Our “New School, Old Cool” spread is our issue’s magnum opus. A full fledged fashion shoot inspired by the now infamous LIFE Magazine photos, styled impeccably by The Hilltop fashion team and company (thanks Ashley Jones, Chovaun Evans, LaJoyce Denson, etc!). The Hilltop

there for some of this season’s new and upcoming trends. And the stories! Getting them may have been a hassle (there was a deadline or two missed), but in the end you’ll be satisfied. Read on to learn the history behind the beloved Ray Ban sunglasses; a first hand report from New York Fashion Week on the new “fsahion insiders” (you’ll be surprised), and a fantastic profile of some of the most powerful black power players in the volatile world of fashion journalism. But what’s an issue if it’s not fun? Discover online at TheHilltopOnline.com new, trendy District eateries to indulge over. Read some of our resident sneakerheads list their top 10 sneakers of all time. Get informed on the Warby Parker online eyewear boutique, a type of Netflix for sunglasses and eyewear. Yea, we did the most. But, it’s fashion and Howard University - do we even know how to do it any other way? Til next month, Aaron Randle Special Issues Editor
