outh Africa’s parliament has voted in favor of a motion that will begin a process of amending the Constitution to allow the government to confiscate white-owned land without compensation. The motion was brought by Julius Malema, leader of the radical Marxist opposition party known as the Economic Freedom Fighters. The motion was passed in a landslide 241 votes for, 83 against. It was amended but supported by new president Cyril Ramaphosa, who had land expropriation as a key part of his platform after taking over from ousted Prime Minister Jacob Zuma earlier this month. “The time for reconciliation is over. Now is the time for justice,” Malema told Parliament, “We must ensure that we restore the dignity of our people without compensating the criminals who stole our land.” Presidential son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner had his security clearance downgraded, preventing him from viewing sensitive material he once had unlimited access to. Kushner lost his access to the most guarded secrets after chief of staff John Kelly ordered that White House officials with interim clearances pending since before June 1, 2017, be cut off if they hadn't received permanent clearances by last Friday. President Trump could have reversed the decision but decided to defer to Kelly. When Kelly arrived on the White House team July 2017, he ordered that Kushner and his wife, first daughter, Ivanka Trump report to Kelly rather than directly to the president. A four-day strike of teachers in West Virginia will come to and Thursday after West Virginia teachers agreed to a new deal on Feb. 27 announced West Virginia Governor Jim Justice at a press conference. Public schools across the state had been closed since Thursday, Feb. 22, over a contract dispute. Justice announced that as part of the new, agreed upon deal, all state personnel will receive a 3 percent raise while school employees—teachers and service personnel—will receive a 5 percent raise. "We have concluded -- with at least as far as an agreement that we can possibly conclude -- that our teachers will go back to work on Thursday; we’ll use tomorrow as like a cooling off day because we’ve already got some schools that have been cancelled, and we’ve got an agreement," Justice said. This passed weekend, Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf, warned residents that she had heard from multiple sources that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents would be conducting a raid on the city. ICE’s acting director, Thomas D. Homan, said of Schaaf "The Oakland mayor's decision to publicize her suspicions about ICE operations further increased that risk for my officers and alerted criminal aliens — making clear that this reckless decision was based on her political agenda with the very federal laws that ICE is sworn to uphold," Homan said in a statement on Tuesday, Feb. 27. Schaaf said, in a statement of her own, "It was my intention that one mother, or one father, would use the information to help keep their family together.

Miss Howard University Named Top 10 HBCU Campus Queen By: Nancy Vu, News Reporter | @NancyVu99
EBONY has just crowned Miss Howard University as one of the top ten contestants in their 8th annual HBCU Campus Queen competition. This is the first time since 2015 that Howard has placed within the competition, and left with a crown. With over 80 schools across the nation entered, EBONY’S HBCU Campus Queen competition is a showcase of the influence of black women excellence on HBCU campuses, while promoting the life and style of black colleges. Miss Howard University, also formally known as junior finance major Victoria Grimes, explains the impact of participating in pageants on young women such as herself.
To build support on campus, Grimes not only established herself through social media and a team of committed friends, but created a competition amongst the students that provided an incentive to vote as much as possible. She offered two Wild ‘N Out tickets to the student who voted on a consistent basis, and gave the most votes at the end of the month-and-a-half long voting period. With a drive to win and not allowing the barriers to interfere with the process, Miss Howard is bestowed her well-deserved crown.
“When I first started the pageants, I was doing it more for internal growth,” states Grimes. “I do pageants to build my communication skills, build being comfortable around people, and being able to speak and talk and gain social skills… I think doing pageants helps me bring out the best of myself.” She continues, stating that her purpose in pageants has “evolved.” “In the beginning I was doing it for personal growth, but now I feel like I’ve been in it for so long… I really just want to help other people kind of evolve from where I started, and show people… you don’t have to do pageants to be Miss Howard,” said Grimes. “You just have to be a genuine person and want to give back to the school and really want to make a difference within the community.” Utilizing her platform, Grimes plans to advocate for an issue that affects women across all circles, but especially in minority communities: women’s empowerment. “I would definitely like to continue to speak to girls in high schools and middle schools, and really promote attending HBCU’s, [and] attending college,” states Grimes.
“I think my goal in the future to kind of give back, [and] to really help young girls know how to get to college, and helping them figure out their future.” With the contest not only being based on presentation and campus involvement, the queens must also be able to build a strong sense of community within their universities, cities and hometowns to gain as many votes as possible. Thus, the 10 queens with the most votes would be the victors of the competition, and be featured in the September 2018 issue of EBONY. Miss Howard University shares the process she undertook to win her crown. “I really thought the community was really essential in helping me win the competition,” said Grimes. “I went to a lot of small businesses around the Howard University- Shaw area, so like Howard Deli, or I would go to HalfSmoke, and try and tell them to promote me. And then, I also had a lot of support from my family back at home.”
Victoria Grimes serves as Howard University’s 79th Miss Howard University. Grimes is a junior Finance major from Destin, Florida. thehilltoponline.com

D.C. Brunch Chronicles By Sonniya Springer, Life+Style Reporter (@slimmthedoll)
B
runch is the food phenomena that has taken over the nation’s capital over the last couple years. But what exactly is brunch? Brunch is a combination of breakfast and lunch usually eaten around 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on weekends, preferably on Sundays. The best part of brunch? Bottomless mimosas. For anyone under 21, brunch is still the move due to the energetic and overall happy vibe brunch brings. The best part about brunch? D.C. is filled with numerous brunch options.
Halfsmoke
651 Florida Ave NW, Washington, DC
Cava Mezze
527 8th Street SE
Cava Mezze’s brunch menu is very cheap. Their prices range from $5 to $ 10. Their entrees include steak and eggs and a signature Cava home fries. If deciding on one entree becomes difficult, there is an all you can eat brunch for $35. The only catch is everyone in the party must also order the all you can eat brunch. Their mimosas are 25 cents. On Saturdays, brunch is from 10:00 am 3:30 pm, while on Sunday, brunch is from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.
At Halfsmoke, located only a few minutes from campus, brunch is served all day on the weekends. They offer free unlimited mimosas with a purchase of an entrée. Prices of entrees vary from $15 to $19. For those under 21, Halfsmoke also has tasty non-alcoholic drinks and milkshakes that will satisfy as well. The food is amazing. Halfsmoke’s reviews are 4 out of 5 stars and up. Along with the food being a hit, they have catchy names like the T-G-I-F Cinnamon Toast Crunch French Toast. The food too looks as pleasant as it taste. Halfsmoke has a ‘90s theme filled with board games, a photobooth, VHS boxes to receive the check and childhood character-decorated lunchboxes that the food comes in.

El Centro D.F. does not have the typical chicken and waffles and French toast breakfast menu. This brunch is perfect for both the Mexican food and brunch lover. It’s the best of both worlds: Bloody Marys, mimosas, lattes, pineapple agua frescas, enchiladas, avocados, salsa verde, tacos, shrimp ceviche and more. The food is authentic and made from scratch. Bottomless brunch is only $35. To catch this, stop by from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm on Saturdays and/or Sunday.
Redrocks is another restaurant that is not the traditional brunch. Redrocks serves Italian food in a pizza shop-like atmosphere. They sell calzones, pizzas, garlic knots and salads. To experience this, go to Redrocks on the weekend from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm.

DVSN makes a stop in Silver Spring for “Morning After” Tour By: Autumn Dalton | HU News Service
After roughly 45 minutes of two DJ sets with a mix of today’s hip-hop hits and 90s R&B, Daniel Daley, lead singer of DVSN, walked out onto the stage flanked by three background singers to screaming and expectant fans.
“I was very impressed by their extensive set list and how they combined an all-inclusive curation of tracks from their new project along with some familiar classics,” Joshua Hubbard, a DVSN fan said.
”Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah..” the beginning of DVSN’s debut single “With Me” begins to boom through the speakers as concertgoers screamed the words of the song back to Daley as he sang.
At one point, Daley stepped back and allowed one of his backup singers, Shantel May, to sing Beyoncé’s “1+1”, followed by her own debut single “Back n Forth.” Her sultry but strong voice crooned through the air and offered a more feminine tone compared to Daley’s commanding sound.
Daley and his R&B group were in Silver Spring, Maryland as they continued their Morning After World Tour last week. The Canadian duo is signed under Drake’s OVO label and consists of Daley, a singer, and Nineteen85, a producer and songwriter. After warming fans up with some of their most popular songs, DVSN incorporated R&B songs by other artists in their performance, including Childish Gambino’s “Redbone” and Miguel’s “Adorn.” Fans shouted the lyrics as Daley smiled and nodded his head in agreement.
In the downtown venue, Daley appeared in front of a screen that displayed video content that also had lyrics. Smoke billowed around him, making him appear ethereal. Nineteen85 seamlessly transitioned between songs off-stage at the sound booth located in the rear of the venue. The audience included Rayo Oni and Selam Yilm, college students from California, participating in a program that allows them to intern in the District of Columbia. “No words. I have absolutely no words. He was amazing,” Yilm said. “I was lit the entire time. I’m so happy I did this,” Oni said. This tour is only the second solo tour for the duo, after participating as supporting acts for Drake’s Summer Sixteen and Boy Meets World tours.

Parallel Universe Offers Glimpse into Futuristic Art By: Dawn Richards, HU News Service
Combining multiple art forms such as science, math, and technology, the exhibit, Parallel Universe, is currently available for viewings at the Downtown Washington, D.C. ARTECHOUSE. The exhibit is available until Mar. 4, 2018, offering visitors a sensory overloading experience. "From an endless vortex of corkscrew-shaped fractals one minute to a net-like membrane to noodle-like coils the next, the seamless transformations exercise a hypnotic hold—glance away momentarily and you’ll miss one,” wrote the Architect’s Newspaper in regards to the exhibit. Parallel Universe is an immersive, art experience that uses uniquely created projections, light installations, science methods, and digital media to give viewers a present day simulation of an actual “parallel universe.” Created by the internationally acclaimed Turkish art studio called Ouchhh, Parallel Universe consists of four installations with one of the four being a collaboration with ARTECHOUSE. The first and biggest installation that the visitors encounter is the iOTA. A live data sculpture that is a 270 degree mapped projection on three large over-sized walls (130 feet long and 24 feet high). The projection is a visual representation
of the 14 minute soundtrack playing on the speakers. The 14 minute track was created first by Audiofil and then digitally animated by Ouchhh to match and demonstrate every sound in the track that plays on a loop. “We believe that technology has played a significant role in the world of art since the 1970’s and today we’re living in the age of new renaissance where technology has become a revolutionary tool for artists,” said Sandro, Artistic Director of ARTECHOUSE as stated on the ARTECHOUSE website. ARTECHOUSE has the first Augmented Reality cocktail bar in America. It offers visitors an exclusive opportunity to see their cocktails (currently inspired by the Parallel Universe installations) to be seen with multiple digital components through their Augmented Reality app that can be downloaded prior to visiting the digital art gallery. ARTECHOUSE opened the innovative art space in June 2017 to showcase emerging, futuristic art installations done by international and local artists on a large scale. Their vision is to bring abnormal art theories and methods together to create immersive art experiences for people of all ages.

I really wanted to break my own record and get a medal,” said Williams. “I wasn’t thinking about making history at all. Then, after the race someone told me it’s been [10] years since we’ve had a gold medal at conference. All the 5:30 a.m. practices and sleepless nights came to my mind. I was happy I didn’t cut corners when I saw the results.”
