The Hilltop The Student Voice of Howard University thehilltoponline.com
Inaugural Bl(activism) Con Bridges Several Generations of Protest Howard University has long been a breeding ground for black activism. On Saturday, April 21, the topic of activism and its role in the black community were explored in the first-ever Bl(activism) Conference. The event, coming several weeks after the longest studentled sit-in in the university’s history, brought activists from several generations together to discuss how student movements have changed over the decades. The conference, sponsored by The Hilltop in partnership with the Poynter Institute, was held in the Interdisciplinary Research Building and included a screening of a documentary about the 1968 student sit-in at Howard. After the screening, panel discussions featured 1968 student leaders Ira Stohlman and Pearl Stewart, 1989 student leaders April Silver and Sheri Warren, and 2018 student leaders Omarvi Minder and Imani Bryant, among other activists.

Wig Maker Snatches 1st-Place Prize in Student Entrepreneur Competition Sixteen Howard University campus-based startups competed in the first ever #BisonBoss Pitch Competition last week, touting the merits of their businesses in three minutes or less before a panel of judges. Most of the businesses were born in Howard dorms and ranged in scope from all-natural hair and body products to message-driven T-shirts to services such as night-shift babysitting and swim lessons targeting African-American youth. The competition was founded and launched by Howard’s inaugural John H. Johnson Endowed Chair for Entrepreneurship Monique Greenwood, who has been coaching many of the student entrepreneurs all school year. “I couldn’t be more proud of how prepared and passionate our presenters were. Each is launching or growing a unique business, and in three minutes, the judges and audience were able to learn of their competitive advantages, target audiences, marketing strategies and financial positions,” said Greenwood, a Howard alumna who owns and operates the Akwaaba Bed & Breakfast Inns on the East Coast. Greenwood has been at Howard the past two years, with a mission to foster a spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation campus-wide. Her HowUinnovate initiative included a speaker series with business leaders like Carol’s Daughter’s Lisa Price and a website (HowUinnovate.org) promoting all things entrepreneurial at Howard. The 2018 #BisonBoss winners are: 1st Place: Legal Communications junior Amara Onwukaeme, owner of The Headline Company, who creates hand-made wigs and revealed she grossed $9,000 in three months selling to students from her dorm room;
2nd Place: School of Business junior Francisco Joseph of Cisco’s Kitchen, who started his catering business making and delivering empanadas to dorm residents late-night Fridays; 3rd Place: Keona George and Nia Henry, recent Howard graduates who started Grandeur Moments, which they’re renaming On Bended Knee, a company to help men and women execute unique wedding proposals. Each winner will receive a semester-long membership to In3, the Inclusive Innovation Incubator and co-worker space opened on Georgia Avenue last year and the location for last week’s #BisonBoss competition; a one-on-one business mentor; registration for their industry-specific trade conference; an appearance on Sirius XM’s “Small Business Report,” and a cash prize of $1,500, $1,000 and $750 for first, second and third place, respectfully, to advance their businesses. “Winning #BisonBoss was the affirmation I needed that I’m on the right path to becoming a successful business owner, even though my Nigerian parents intend for me to become a lawyer,” said Onwukaeme. “The pitch also opened my eyes to the incredible student business talent all around me at Howard. We will be game changers.” The judges included Nailah Ellis-Brown, owner of Ellis Island Tea, who won the first season of Queen Boss on BET; Lakesha Brown-Renfro, who, along with her partners, wowed the judges when they pitched their Mango Mango preserves on Shark Tank; Carl Brown, executive director of the D.C. Small Business Development Center at Howard, and business and pitch consultant Yvonne “Phoebe” Rivers.
