about the home
The Home’s mission is to ensure the healthy behavioral, emotional, social and educational development and physical wellAble to trace its roots back to 1799 and the founding of an orphanage, The Home is the oldest child welfare agency in the nation and one of New England’s largest. Today, behind the quaint name, is a vibrant organization providing an array of critical services for children and youth from birth to age 21. Our goal is to keep vulnerable families unified and children safe and in their own communities. When that is not possible or advisable, we work to stabilize the family and, simultaneously, provide the children with a temporary therapeutic living arrangement. Programs include early childhood services, family-focused clinical therapy, special education, therapeutic residential and respite treatment, adoption, intensive foster care, and independent/ transitional living.

a letter from our leadership
Dear Friends, Fiscal Year 2010 was a very exciting time in many respects for The Home. The measures we put in place to mitigate the effects of the economic downtown in the previous year began to bear fruit. We felt the ground solidify under us and we were able to move ahead with many new plans. As always, we owe a debt of gratitude to our supporters who stood by us and helped us meet our fundraising goals. The Home’s expertise with the population “aging out” of state systems of care at age 18 was recognized by the awarding of contracts for two programs opening in FY 2011. Both of these programs – one a residential facility for homeless youth, and the other a resource center for young adults lacking family and community connections are innovative and designed to fill a gap for these young people who have very few sources of support to prepare them for a productive life. A large part of the fiscal year was devoted to developing The Home’s new five-year Strategic Plan (FY 2011–2015). The plan comprises four major areas in which we have the goals of being a premier child, youth and family services agency; a leader in innovation and public policy; a preferred employer; and a fiscally robust nonprofit organization. This is an ambitious plan designed to ensure that The Home remains forward-looking, flexible and able to navigate the complexity of the external child welfare environment while continuing to meet the mission of serving vulnerable children and families. We have made significant progress towards the Third Century Campaign, which calls for the construction of a new lower school and therapeutic residences at our Longview Farm facility in Walpole. This critical phase represents an $18 million investment and we currently have commitments for almost half of that amount, a significant accomplishment given the economic reality over the past two years. Our plans call for us to break ground on the new facilities sometime in the summer of 2011. As always, none of our successes would have been possible without the support of our donors, our Board of Directors and our dedicated staff and volunteers. On behalf of everyone at The Home, especially the children, thank you for your continued belief in our work and our mission.
Joan Wallace-Benjamin, Ph.D. President and CEO
John Thomas Hailer Board Chair
Out and About in Our Programs The Career Development Program at the Baird Center, a therapeutic residence for boys in Plymouth, was credited with being instrumental in landing one young man a job in a local restaurant. He says the experience he gained working with the chef in Baird’s kitchen was what sparked his interest in the culinary world.
Students from Academic Support for College & Life, a first-year college program for youth aging out of state systems of care, traveled to Jordan over the winter break to complete the community service portion of their curriculum. They volunteered at a center for disabled children in Tafila and participated in an environmental project alongside members of the Peace Corps at the Data Nature Reserve. This was a life-changing experience for the students, some of whom had never been outside of the U.S. or even been on a plane.
Facts & Figures
156, 131 meals were served to children in The Home’s therapeutic residential and school programs
894 hours of therapeutic mentoring
The Therapeutic After School Program (TASP) saw family participation increase from 20% to 80% in events outside regular programming hours. The program’s clients were responsible for planning and preparing the essentials details of events which included pot luck dinners, a Thanksgiving feast and a Mother’s Day limo ride into Boston for dinner. Encouraging increased family involvement in treatment is central to The Home’s goal of creating healthy children, capable families, and responsive communities.
– a new service launched during FY 2010 – were delivered to children
41, 325 hours of home-based clinical and support services were provided by the Safe-at-Home program to families in crisis A combined 3,113 after-school days were attended by teens at the Therapeutic After School Program
20, 843 hours of mental health services were provided by the Child & Family Counseling Center
“
Children at both Harrington House and Roxbury House, two of the agency’s group homes, participated in “cooking green” programs which involved lots of cooking and eating healthy foods, learning about nutrition and how to incorporate financial responsibility into buying groceries. These initiatives were part of The Home’s ongoing program to “fix the food.” Many kids in The Home’s care are prescribed psychiatric medication which often includes weight gain as a side effect. As a consequence, these children have a higher rate of obesity than the general population and improving their eating habits is a priority.
Children are one third of our population and all of our future. —Select Panel for the Promotion of Child Health, 1981
”
Efforts to address the issue of community violence and find engaging ways to promote peace were ongoing in many of The Home’s programs during the year. A Cross-program committee was formed to generate artistic responses to the question, “When you think of the word peace, what picture comes to mind?” Images were created that were sewn onto large panels of colored fabric and hung in our site in Roslindale in September 2009. Also, small versions of Sidewalk Sam’s peace dove were made available in the waiting room of the Clinic for clients to decorate. The doves were laminated and hung throughout the facility, creating a “peace path.”
What your money buys...
$225 feeds a child for one month at the Baird Group Home
$720 buys back-to-school supplies for children at Harrington House
$3,000 pays for all summer recreational programs at the Knight’s Children Center $6,400 pays for one year of Project Adventure at Longview Farm
Three residents of the Children’s Community Support Collaborative who participated in the Express Yourself performance traveled to Washington, D.C. to receive the Coming Up Taller Award from First Lady Michelle Obama. This Presidential award recognizes arts and humanities programs offer to youth in the U.S., Mexico, Egypt, and China.
Expressive Therapy was formally incorporated into all program treatment offerings at the Knight Children’s Center, The Home’s residential and special education school for younger children. Other notable improvements included a 60% reduction in restraints from fiscal year 2009 and the introduction of Sensory Rooms to replace “quiet rooms.”
$10,200 funds the Safe-at-Home program’s annual budget for a client/ family in crisis
The Columbian Lodge of Masons held its 13th Annual Basketball Tournament for The Home’s youth at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center. Children from The Home’s Knight Children’s Center, Longview Farm, Baird Center and Roxbury House competed in this year’s multi-school tournament. The support we receive from the Columbian Lodge through this incredible basketball tournament and other activities during the year give the children an invaluable opportunity to benefit from socializing in the community and learning important skills like teamwork that will help them rebuild their lives.
Almost 40 kids throughout The Home’s programs were treated to a spectacular holiday party hosted by the Boston Celtics at their training facility in Waltham. Paul Pierce kicked off the event by answering a stream of questions from the young people. Then everyone had an opportunity to shoot hoops with the team, eat sundaes and play other games. Each child left with a gym bag full of goodies and some great memories.
With a little help from our friends Every year The Home is able to help the children and families in our care in ways above and beyond what is proscribed in treatment plans or provided for in state funding. These extra opportunities are made possible in large part because we receive tremendous support from our donors ─ individual and corporate. These are just a few of the events that helped us raise awareness and dollars in FY 2010:

The Third Century Campaign : Building for the Next 100 Years During this past fiscal year, The Home continued to raise funds for our first major capital campaign. Our FY10 efforts brought us to within almost 50% of our goal, placing us in a strong position to be considered for major Foundation support. Our plans are to break ground on the new facilities in the summer of 2011. Plans call for the construction of a new special education school and residences at Longview Farm in Walpole, a 166acre facility that The Home has owned and operated since 1940. The new facilities will accommodate the 5- to 13-yearold children currently living and learning at the Knight Children’s Center in Jamaica Plain. Sadly, this building, erected in 1914 and often thought of as the flagship of The Home, has long been in need of replacement. Moving to the expanded campus in Walpole will provide a far superior, healthier environment for the children, and also create efficiencies through shared facilities. Support for The Home has been a tradition in Massachusetts for as long as we’ve been around. The Third Century Campaign presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for long-time friends and new supporters of The Home to be an integral part of our continuing legacy of caring. There will be many naming opportunities to recognize the generosity of donors who make gifts to the Campaign of $100,000 and above.
