“The best way to predict the future is to create it” - Peter Drucker

I love that quote! We are, after all, masters of our own destiny! Its official, Spring is here, and we are still getting used to the daylight savings change. This getting up in the dark is no fun at all, but let’s face it we have had the most fantastic winter with temperatures in the 70s and 80s, while the rest of the country have had the harshest, coldest winter in the last 25 years. We have sun tanned and gone swimming while they shoveled snow. All the groundhogs they must be totally confused.

Ok, so let’s stop and focus now that the first quarter is over. Time to ask yourself a difficult question: “Am I on track with my business and personal goals?” Not an easy question, but time is moving!

Did you know long-term studies show that only 40% of people who stick to their No. 1 goal or resolution did it on the first try? The rest had to try multiple times. In fact, 17% finally reached their goal after more than 6 attempts… so never give up! Surprisingly over 60% of people did not even attempt to reach their No. 1 goal, even once. That truly amazes me! Are so many of us out there so scared to fail that we don’t even try?

I recently read an article written by Darren Hardy on “Why We Fail”. He interviews an Iranian man whom had immigrated to the United States with nothing but the clothes on his back and ended up making a fortune. Darren asked him to write down everything he could think of that accounted for his huge success, so he could share it with his students. Thinking it would fill a book, Darren arrived for the next meeting ready to receive a ton of information, yet the guy gave him a slip of paper with a few sentences.

No! Could it really be that simple?

Why is it that as humans we have to make things more difficult than they need to be? We clutter our lives trying to do too much; to make more money; to buy more stuff and ultimately feel overwhelmed and unhappy. Being successful and reaching your goals does not have to be unattainably difficult and out of our reach. It simply means doing one small thing a day to move you closer to your goal. Focus, discipline and habit.

Having recently celebrated St. Patrick’s Day, when everyone bandies about the expression, “The Luck of the Irish” - most of us realize by now, that everyone creates their own luck, even if you are Irish.

“It’s hard to tell with these Internet startups if they’re really interested in building companies or if they’re just interested in the money. I can tell you, though: If they don’t really want to build a company, they won’t luck into it. That’s because if you don’t have the passion for what you’re doing, you’ll give up before reaching your goal.” Steve Jobs Think about what you’re doing every day and consider this…if what you’re doing isn’t moving you towards your goals, then it’s moving you away from your goals. Are you applying the 80/20 principle to your daily life? Are you focusing on the vital 20% to ensure the most effective use of your time?

Now is the time to start investing in your goals and your future; it’s not too late! We have another 3 quarters to achieve something great this year. It’s time to stop making excuses; and as they say at Nike, “Just do it!”
