Happy Is the Man Who Wants What He Has Love is in the air, or is it? It’s that time of year when we rush out to spend our money (approximately $130 if you are a man and about half that if you are a woman) on flowers, cards, candy and perhaps even an adorable stuffed toy. About one billion Valentine’s cards are exchanged in the U.S. every year, second only to Christmas. With all this love floating around, you would think that everyone would be happy. But they’re not. I heard on the radio the other day that California has the highest divorce rate in the country, and Orange County comes in at #1 in California. This begs me to ask...are people not happy with who they are? Studies show that the top three areas most people want to change or improve are: 1. Finances: Make more money; 2. Health: Lose weight or improve their appearance; 3. Relationships: Make existing ones better or forge new ones. So according to this list, here in Orange County we are chasing the money to be able to live in one of the most expensive places in America. The net result is a lot stress and long hours spent working. The average person doesn’t have the time or the energy to exercise or eat healthy. Any extra time they do have is devoted to their loving children who need to be carted back and forth to meet with friends or attend sporting practices and matches. When they finally do get home, they typically crash, watch TV, eat, do more work and then go to bed. This leads us to goal number three relationships. There’s just not enough time to have fun or just relax after doing all the important things like making money, caring for your family, work, etc. It makes me tired just thinking about it. How about this for an idea? My wife Debbie and I

have been married for 20 years now. It appears that for residents of Orange County that’s a pretty big deal. WOW...is that really a long time to be married? We have all been in that spiral and trust me - it can get out of control quickly. So to counter, we have one rule: DATE NIGHT every Friday. If habits lead to success, then make one night a week your night...no matter what...no excuses. We have successfully been doing this for many years. No matter how hard the week is, we both look forward to our date night. Sometime it’s with friends; sometimes it’s just the two of us. Sometimes we don’t even go out. We get our daughter Tayla to go out with her baby sitter and we have the house to ourselves. In fact, Tayla comes to me during the week sometimes and will ask, “Are you going out on date night?” When I ask why she wants to know, she says, “Well I have plans, so if you aren’t going out, make sure you call my sitter, Julia because I’m going out.” She’s 10 years old. See the power of habit? Even kids get used to consistency and routine. She loves the fact that mommy and daddy are having some alone time.
