It’s conference time again at TheHomeMag. Since its’ inception 12 years ago with only one magazine, our expansion to over 40 cities has been a direct reflection of the people that we set course with. Seth Godin speaks of belonging to a ‘tribe’ or group of people with a common passion or purpose as a measure of success. Our tribe owns the hard work it takes to produce TheHomeMag, and annually convenes to celebrate, share ideas and generally misbehave in fun. Of course whenever like-minded people get together, there are valuable lessons in the making. This year we returned to CU Lazy River Ranch in Granby, Colorado. This dude ranch set in the mountains next to a beautiful river, offered the comforts of home while still being rustic in nature. From Thursday to Sunday we’d be together sharing challenges and successes while having a good time. This year our printer also organized a guys fishing trip. To set the record straight—fishing has never been on my bucket list. It hasn’t even been anywhere near my bucket list, at all! My vision of fishing was a bunch of guys cold and shivering in a river, getting wet and being miserable, while casting for fish that never would come. I never understood how anyone could call this fun, but after much arm-twisting, I decided to see what the fuss was all about. Surprisingly, I have to admit it was way better than I expected. The log cabins were first class, easily sleeping 10 and there was a roaring fire, sauna and a fair amount of alcohol in stock. As for the misconception that guys can’t organize a feast…Well, that’s just not true. We had everything under control for our fishing escapade – the schooling team; the drinks team; the grilling team; and the cleaning crew. So while we were learning to fish, we enjoyed the best grass fed steaks, sides, salads and great drinks. Everything stayed respectable with the cleaning crew. If I ever have to go on a survivor episode – this is the team to take and win! So, what could I possibly be learning during this? A lot and it was huge! Expert Experience Gives You An Advantage: We had 3 top rated fishing guides teaching us the basics. With them, we selected the right equipment and location for fishing. They knew the river, so as conditions changed they guided us to change materials (flies,

weights, etc.), location and generally kept us on track. Manage Experience Expectations: Our guides helped us set the right expectation from the start in preparing us properly. With the right tools and guidance, you can expect some form of success. However, in life we sometimes get disappointed because we expect beyond what’s possible to reach. Personally, I already had low expectations, so when I landed seven trout on my first day, imagine my amazement. But it wasn’t just me. The team had properly set expectations of having a good time instead of conquering fish. One of my team mates (who also had never fished) landed his first fish with his first cast. Our guides told us this was fairly unique and that was confirmed after he cast a few hundred times before landing another. Experience the Experience: Fishing was the catalyst that brought the team together and it was a great experience. But really, the experience was being in the present moment and enjoying it. The food, the drinks, the fish… the moment! It could never be recaptured so we had to enjoy the experience while it was there – and we did.

With fishing over, we returned to the CU Lazy River Ranch. Reacquainting with old friends, the majority of which were South African, was refreshing and fun. Yes, the weekend was filled with activity from fishing, horseback riding and archery to shooting on the range, partying until dusk and getting fabulous couples massages. It was an experience to remember but mostly it was an experience to be present to.
