The United States may have lost the Soccer World Cup this year, but boy have the games been exciting. People who know nothing about soccer have gotten caught up in the flurry of the game, watching right down to the wire. As the camera pans the crowd, you can see the tension rise with each team scuffling to get the lead. Faces from all over the world are praying – with hands together and heads bowed – that their country wins. With all those prayers going up, I wonder who gets God’s favor? Or is there really favor involved or just sheer luck? Think about it, Brazil won on penalties, so did the extra home energy luckily tilt the scale? The United States had 16 saves—the most recorded in a single World Cup game since 1966--but it still wasn’t enough to beat out Belgium. Were they just unlucky? As I think back over my life journey I believe luck has played it’s part, but I also think of golfer, Gary Player saying, “The more I practice the luckier I get.” So is it luck or is it something else and if it’s something else, just what is it? Think about these scenarios: The first business I purchased came as a result of me working incessantly. I spent 3 months canvassing every bank for any deal to get Business “A” but every door closed in my face. Determined, I kept pounding the pavement and while searching I happened upon a business that seemed to be a better fit. Within two weeks everything fell into place for me to own Business “B” and I became the proud owner. One month later I learned that Business “A” had burned to the ground. Was it Luck or Circumstance? I meet my wife Debbie in Durban, on a Sunday afternoon after insisting to my brother that I was too exhausted to go out. My brother kept pestering me until I finally came to the deck restaurant. Now twenty years later was it Luck or Love?
L- Location. – In order for something to happen you’ve got to put yourself in the game. When travelling as a yacht skipper in the British Virgin Islands, I created luck by giving up what I had and moving to the location of what I wanted. Sitting at home or in an office everyday is not going to help you reach your goal and it’s not going to lead you to luck. Get out and get moving.

U- Understanding. – As in any sport, just by being on the field does not mean you will score. To become a skipper of a yacht I had to understand the criteria and know the rules. When you understand when to steer or stand-on (on a yacht) or run or pass (in a game), you just might get lucky and score. Learn the rules for the goals you have.

C- Connection. – Interactive sports are so much fun and though I could yacht alone – it was more fun with friends. You need a team and not just any team, but a team that understands the strategy and desired results. Your team should enjoy playing together and that will keep them in flow. Talk to people and build a connected network.

K- Knowledge. – When you are in the right place, at the right time, with the right people – you then must have the right expertise to win. Study your craft, customers and team.
