From the Editor The best things in life are not things, they are moments!

My brother called me late one Sunday and said, “Hey, Gavin and I are heading to Joe Cool’s tonight.” Joe’s was a good vibe bar on Durban‘s main beach in sunny South Africa.

It was the “in” place on Sundays. It pumped music, great food, drinks, and had a deck overlooking the ocean and the promenade. Always tons of people-watching and good-looking, sun-tanned girls in bikinis or barelythere outfits. But that day, I was tired from a cycle race I had competed in earlier. Going out was the last thing on my mind. After a lot of persuasion, I relented.

Macchiatos, and Espressos by the dozens to keep up with the demand at Fego Café, one of numerous locations we had around the Johannesburg CBD area. My wife, Debbie, was working in her high-powered corporate job as Marketing Manager for one of two Cellular/Internet companies.

We seemingly had it all. Successful careers, flourishing business, great circle of friends, nice house and swanky cars…but at what cost?

All our time went into our work and business. We worked all weekend, our health suffered, our stress levels were through the roof, and we had very little energy to enjoy it all. Then one day, in I met up with my group of friends, out walks my father-in-law, Don. “Come for on the deck, enjoying the warm, setting a Cappuccino?” I shout, happy to see him. “Sure, but I also want to float an sun and the exciting buzz of people idea past you. We gave up the corporate life, left our country, and took on a new and exciting adventure on a yacht in the Caribbean. Make no mistake, it was scary, but together we believed we could take on any challenge and succeed!

We go for a walk, hike or ride on Saturday. Even when I am tired, my Soul Cycle ride on Saturday mornings with my daughter sets up my weekend. I feel revived, full of energy, and ready for a fun-filled weekend. New adventures, no matter how small, make life feel like it moves at a different pace. Each new one will lead to another, and before you know it, you will be experiencing more joy and happiness.

I know I need to experience excitement to fully enjoy my life.

We all have defining moments that shape our lives, but do we have to wait for them to happen? I know for many of us we operate very much on a daily routine to get everything done. For example, I wake up at 5:30am, get to the gym at 6am, eat, dress, go to work and then return home for dinner, family, and bed…repeat. Weekends, for many years, for my wife and I were rest and recover, so we had enough energy for the week ahead. This monotonous routine can take away your joy for living, and that’s when you start to question, “What it’s all about?”

Life is about moments! Don’t wait for them to happen! Create them! Change your moments and experience a better life!
