Our Facebook culture today is obsessively focused on unrealistic expectations. Be happy! Be healthier! Be fitter! Be slimmer!

Be richer! Be smarter! Be more! Want more! But if you stop and think about this for a moment, this highlights the lack in our lives. Since all these elements in our lives are constantly fluctuating, you may never be happy if you are expecting them to be perfect.

Growing up as a boy, I clearly remember going to the theater to watch movies. There was no TV in our country until I was about 12 or 13 years old.

I loved watching the trailers and the advertisements. One of my favorite adverts, which I have since found out, was a favorite for most growing up in my generation in South Africa, was the British-branded cigarette called “Peter Stuyvesant – Your international passport to smoking pleasure!“ In the 1980s the Peter Stuyvesant brand pushed high glam and adventure.

They featured three Ken and Barbie couples exploring the world in style, smoking, looking like they don’t have a care in the world. From high rolling in Monte Carlo; scuba diving in the Red Sea; drinking champagne on flashy yachts on the French Riviera; helicopter drops on the ski slopes in the Alps, to partying the night away at the Rio Festival in Brazil. What excitement, we all thought! This must be what life is all about! My love for adventure and travel was ingrained forever! I have been a travel junkie ever since. Oh, by the way, just for the record I was never a smoker.

Looking back at how I got to this point today, it’s interesting to see how one will chase their dreams. My American dream started at 12 years old without even realizing it. Today, I have been in California for 9 years since moving from Cape Coral, Florida; where my journey with TheHomeMag had started 5 years earlier.

Recently, my car had to get a routine service, which turned into a two week

ordeal. But a positive spin occurred from this situation. I had the fun task of using Uber every day for two weeks. Boy, those Uber drivers are a wealth of interesting information! I learned something new every time I rode with them. Every driver has their reason for doing what they are doing. Some are part time, some are full time, some are young, and some are older. Most need the extra money, but all have some problem to solve. They are chasing their dream and they have found a way to make it happen. It’s awesome, and I have had a great Uber experience these last few weeks! They are providing a much-needed service to the community.

For example, one life threatening challenge: Getting held up at gunpoint on the Bulgarian and Turkish border at 1am was no laughing matter. Now, I can notch it up as a great story. At the time though, I wasn›t sure I was going to walk away from it.

I truly believe I am where I am today because of all the problems and challenges I have faced. There is no question; they made me stronger, but I also believe they made me happier because out of solving challenges comes the understanding of life and how it rolls.

When I look back at my life’s journey and all its adventures, I remember thinking that after completing my two year compulsory military service, I had paid my dues, and that now I was ready to start my Peter Stuyvesant adventure. My expectations of life were a little misguided to say the least. I had a long way to go to earn those Peter Stuyvesant trips!

I remember it verbatim to this day, “When it’s sun-up in Malibu, its midnight in Monte Carlo. When Rio stops for the day, LA rides the high rolling skies.

Play the world! Fun! Fun! Fun! In San Tropez you sport the bare necessities; panama shorts and a sunny tan, while you watch your man ride the waves!“ Boy, did I want to discover the WHOLE world! I had no idea travel would be so challenging. Peter Stuyvesant made it look so fun and easy. The truth is, life is hard and beautiful at the same time. I have found that no matter what I do in life, there are challenges involved: Marriage challenges, friends’ challenges, kids’ challenges, businesses challenges and on and on. But I realize now that in a sense, “happiness” comes from solving our problems.

The world is not one big fairytale where we all live happily ever after.

My advice to those of you starting your life’s adventure, is not to run from your problems; face them, learn from them, get better at dealing with them, hone that skill and become the best problem solver you can be, because life will always present you with new challenges. Accept that life is hard but beautiful. I believe if you master this, you will be able to look back with a sense of accomplishment and know you are stronger and happier for having faced them.

My wish for you all...a Happy “Peter Stuyvesant” summer!

Looking back though, my early days of travel I remember heading off for my first big adventure with a plane ticket and $1,000. I returned a year later having visited Israel, Egypt, England, Ireland, Wales, Spain, Italy, France,
