“A good friend is a connection to life - a tie to the past, a road to the future, the key to sanity in a totally insane world.” ~Lois Wyse I’m off to South Africa in a few days time. The whole unexpected aspect and adventure of travel always gets me excited, although this trip has very mixed emotions for me. On the one hand, I am going to celebrate my brother’s wedding: something we have planned for many months and we are all very excited about. On the other hand, there’s the great realization that I am going back to say “goodbye” to a man whom has had a greater impact on my life than I ever thought possible. The greatest gift I’ve ever received in life and business is the friendship and guidance of my life coach and mentor, Don Sutherland. I was introduced to Don 17 years ago (my then future wife’s father). He has come to be the one person in my life that I consider my mentor and guide. It didn’t start out like that, but grew over the years. In our youth, we are so busy “growing up” and experiencing life, and we often don’t realize the huge impact those around us have on our behavior and growth. I was acutely aware that Don had a certain assurance and presence about him that made people trust him, listen to him, and want to follow in his footsteps. He set high standards and worked long hours, always seeming to love what he did with incredible energy. Being an entrepreneur myself, it was a great source of encouragement and security to bounce ideas off of him. I don’t know if he has any idea how much it has meant to me to be able to chat about business every week. He always had time for me and his advice was always sound and reassuring.

When I moved to the U.S. I would always ask myself, “Now what would Don do in this situation?” He became my guiding light of principle and integrity. I never wanted to disappoint him, so I drove myself just as hard. Over time, it has become a passion of mine to help other people become more than they thought they could, just like Don. If life is not about growing in the face of challenge and giving back, then what is it all about? My sense of security stemmed from knowing that Don would always be around. Now, from back surgery complications we fear he may not be with us for much longer. I feel the “space” opening up already, and I must say it’s a bit of a shock. How lucky I am to have known someone so incredible. Don is more than my father-in-law, my friend and mentor…he is my HERO. I am not alone in the way he impacted my life. He has helped many others and will be sorely missed. Take my advice and cherish every moment you have with your family and friends, because without warning, they can be taken away. Life is about living every day as a gift. Don will leave this world having made it a better place. His love for others has made a difference! Don, we love you! 4
