LIGHTING TIPS TO SPRUCE UP YOUR HOME
As days grow shorter, the role of lighting in our homes becomes more important than ever. The right lighting can transform your living space into a warm and inviting haven, perfect for cozying up during those cold winter nights. However, while creating a cozy atmosphere, it’s equally important to consider safety. Here’s how you can help to achieve a balance between comfort and security with your winter lighting.
INCORPORATE SOFT LIGHTING
Use warm-coloured light bulbs to create a cozy glow. Table lamps with fabric shades and dimmable floor lamps add warmth, while string lights provide a soft, whimsical effect.
ENHANCE WITH CANDLES
Flameless candles add an intimate, flickering light, perfect for winter.
COMBINE LIGHTING WITH DECOR
Use accent lighting to highlight key areas like artwork or plants, enhancing the room’s ambiance. Decorative fixtures like lanterns or chandeliers can serve as both lighting and decor, adding style and warmth.
PRIORITIZE SAFETY
Check lighting fixtures and cords for wear and replace as needed. Use timers or smart plugs to avoid leaving lights on too long. Ensure lighting setups don’t block walkways or exits.
Balancing cozy ambiance with safety is key to winter lighting. With careful planning, you can enjoy a beautifully lit, safe and inviting home all season long.

COACH HOUSEAnnex

Tucked discretely down a quiet urban laneway, the original building was part of Moore’s Hearse Livery and used as a vehicle depot. Altered and added to overtime, it was converted into a residence in the 1980s. The only thing left from the livery is the brick walls in the courtyards.
Taylor Smyth Architects, working with William Fulghum Design Associates, gutted the two-storey structure down to the bare studs and enhanced the key features of the residence with a contemporary light-filled interior that incorporates a rich material palette of wood, stone, bronze, and leather. New furniture was selected for all spaces to complement the design. Distinctive wall and ceiling light fixtures throughout the house combine vintage 1960’s pieces with modern ones.
PROJECT DETAILS
TEAM: Taylor Smyth Architects in collaboration with William Fulghum Design Associates
The entry hall features built-in millwork, combining walnut, lacquered wood, and custom closet doors of leather-trimmed in bronze. From there, the view through the house culminates in the den where a linear gas fireplace is an inset into a dramatic wall of dark veined stone trimmed in bronze.
The most remarkable features of the house are the pair of ivy-clad landscaped walled-in courtyards that flank the den, and the extensive rooftop terrace above. ▹
A single ceiling plane unifies the living and dining room, appearing to float away from the walls with the incorporation of soft indirect lighting around its perimeter, and is pierced by two skylights that flood the space with light. The living room features a stone and walnut-clad fireplace.
The stair to the second floor is surmounted by a skylight and continues up another partial level to a large private landscaped terrace over the living/dining and den, where raised planters and a series of decks define a sequence of seating and entertaining spaces. A custom wood screen, its random vertical slats creating a rich composition of light and shade, conceals the wall of the second floor.
The second floor contains the master bedroom, ensuite bathroom and walk-incloset, and a second bedroom and bathroom. The master bathroom is illuminated through a screen of alternating back-painted and acid-etched glass with diffuse natural light from the skylight at the stair. Inside, statuario marble laminam and charcoal coloured porcelain tile create a dramatic contrast of light and dark. ◆

AUTUMN RECIPES Warm Up
WITH HEARTY
THE COLDER MONTHS ARE PERFECT FOR TESTING OUT COZY NEW RECIPES IN THE KITCHEN MADE WITH WHOLESOME, NUTRITIOUS AND HEARTY INGREDIENTS. IT’S THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO MAKE STEWS AND SOUPS, BUT IF YOU’RE RUNNING OUT OF IDEAS, YOU CAN ALWAYS PUT A NEW SPIN ON CLASSIC FAVOURITES.
This soup recipe by Renée Kohlman from the Sweetsugarbean food blog is a fun twist on the traditional mushroom and barley, with quinoa swapped in for the barley and added bacon for a little depth of flavour. Bursting with antioxidants and other important nutrients, not to mention being low in calories, mushrooms are great to use in the winter as they are the only vegetable that contains vitamin D. We’ve used sliced cremini mushrooms here, but feel free to use whatever mushrooms you like.
MUSHROOM + QUINOA SOUP with BACON
Prep Time: 15 mins | Cook Time: 35 mins | Serves: 6
INGREDIENTS
• 2 tbsp butter
• 1 large yellow onion, chopped
• 1 large carrot, chopped
• 1 celery stalk, chopped
• 200 g sliced cremini mushrooms
• 2 garlic cloves, minced
• 1 tsp dried thyme
• 1/2 tsp salt
• 1/4 tsp pepper
• 1/4 cup sherry
• 4 cups low-sodium vegetable or chicken broth
• 1 can (19 oz/540 mL) diced tomatoes
• 1/2 cup quinoa, rinsed
• 2 cups chopped kale, tough centre stems removed
• 5 slices cooked bacon, chopped
• 1 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce or tamari
DIRECTIONS
STEP ONE: Melt butter in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add onion, carrot and celery. Cook for a few minutes then stir in mushrooms. Sauté for 3 minutes, then stir in garlic. Cook for another minute or two, until the vegetables are tender, and mushrooms have released their juices.
STEP TWO: Stir in sherry and cook until vegetables have absorbed the liquid, about 2 minutes. Stir in broth, diced tomatoes and quinoa. Cover, bring to a boil, then turn the heat down to low and simmer for 20 to 25 minutes until quinoa is cooked through.
STEP THREE: Stir in kale, bacon and soy sauce. Simmer until kale is softened, about 5 to 7 minutes. If you find it too thick, thin with a bit more broth or water. Season to taste with more salt and pepper, if desired. ◆ newscanada.com
GETTING YOUR HOME READYWinter
By GTA Homes Reno Inc.
The leaves are changing colour and the air is getting crisp, signaling the inevitable approach of winter not too far behind. Now’s the time for homeowners to do some simple annual maintenance, to prepare their home for the wind, sleet, and snow. I’ve seen firsthand the impact that proper preparation—or lack thereof—can have on a home. Take a moment and invest some time or hire a pro now to inspect your home while the weather is still good to ensure the cold months ahead in your home will be cozy, safe, and energy-efficient.
INSPECT AND CLEAN GUTTERS
As leaves fall at this time of year, they can quickly clog gutters and downspouts, leading to water overflow and potential damage to your roof, siding, and foundation. Before the first frost, take the time to clean out all debris. While you’re at it, inspect for any signs of damage, such as sagging gutters or loose brackets, and make necessary repairs. If your home has tall trees nearby, consider installing gutter guards to prevent future clogs.
SEAL GAPS AND CRACKS
Cold drafts are not just uncomfortable, they can also drive up your energy bills. Walk around your home’s exterior and inspect for gaps or cracks in the siding, windows, and doors. Use caulk or weatherstripping to seal any openings. Pay special attention to areas where different building materials meet, such as between brick and wood, as these are common spots for air leaks.
CHECK THE ROOF
Your roof is your home’s first line of defense against the elements, so ensure it’s in good shape before winter arrives. Look for loose, missing, or damaged shingles and have them replaced. Inspect the flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights to ensure it’s secure and free of leaks. If your roof is older or showing significant wear, it may be time to consider a full replacement to avoid potential issues during heavy snowfalls.
INSULATE AND VENTILATE
Proper insulation and ventilation help keep your home warm and energyefficient. Check the insulation in your attic, walls, and crawl spaces, and add more if necessary. Insulating your pipes, especially those in unheated areas, can prevent them from freezing and bursting. Don’t forget about ventilation in areas like the attic and crawl spaces to prevent moisture buildup, which can lead to mold and mildew.
SERVICE THE FURNACE
A reliable heating system is essential for a comfortable home during the colder months. Before the chill sets in, schedule a professional inspection of your furnace, boiler, or heat pump. A technician can clean and tune up the system, replace filters, and check for any potential issues that could cause a breakdown in the middle of winter. If you have a fireplace, now is also the time to have your chimney cleaned and inspected to prevent fire hazards.
PROTECT OUTDOOR PLUMBING
Faucets, hoses, and irrigation systems are vulnerable to freezing temperatures. I always advise you to ensure you disconnect and drain all garden hoses, and shut off the water supply to exterior faucets. If you have an irrigation system, winterize it to prevent pipes from freezing and cracking. Installing insulated faucet covers can provide additional protection.
PREPARE FOR EMERGENCIES
Winter storms can lead to power outages and other emergencies. Stock up on essentials such as batteries, and flashlights, Ensure that your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly, and consider investing
in a backup generator if you live in an area prone to prolonged outages.
It’s hard to believe winter is on its way, and it seems to sneak up on us every year. Don’t get caught off guard. A little proactive, annual maintenance now, can help prevent costly repairs, and headaches, not to mention winter’s chill, down the road.
