‘HOOD ADVICE

by Greta Stewart, Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center

Punch. Cake. Candy. These are the staples at just about any birthday party. But remember, there can be too much of a good thing, especially in children who have a lot of energy to begin with. So when you’re attending or hosting a birthday party, what can you do to keep the sugar highs at a minimum? Kara Bruning, a pediatrician at Avera Medical Group McGreevy Pediatrics South says if your child has too much sugar in his or her system, they’re going to have a lot of energy, which can translate into a negative reaction. “They may be somewhat crabby as they do not know what to do with their energy,” she says. “So now is the time to get them active!” To avoid the temptation of overdoing it on the sweets altogether, parents should feed their children more nuts, beans, cheeses, eggs, and peanut butter, along with complex carbohydrates like whole grains, vegetables, and fruits. However, as many moms can attest, a task like this is often easier said than done, especially if you are dealing with picky eaters. Here are some tips for controlling your children’s sugar intake, including some they won’t even notice. • Think small. Serve treats like ice cream in smaller dishes like teacups, rather than soup bowls. • Teach kids to be choosy. Allow your children to have one sugary treat per day, for example. They’ll learn to wait for their favorite treats and turn down the rest. • Avoid processed foods. As a general rule, food with less packaging will also include less sugar. • Skip the soda. Ditch the “liquid candy” by helping your kids make their own fizzy drinks. By mixing juice and seltzer, kids can mix up any flavored drink they want. • Change the recipe. Many times you can bake foods with only half the required amount of sugar or substitute brown sugar as a healthier alternative.

• Top it off. Instead of those high in sugar, use unsweetened cereal and top it off with dried or fresh fruits for flavor. • Keep healthy foods handy. Leave fresh or dried fruits in bowls around the house. When the kids want a snack, it will be the first thing they grab. Dr. Bruning says if your child eats too much sugar/junk food on a daily basis, the easiest way to fix it is to stop buying it. “I know that can be hard,” she says. “Kids will be exposed to junk food at daycare, school, and so many other places. Parents have a hard time controlling that. However, they can stop or significantly decrease the amount that is brought into the house.”

What is proper RSVP etiquette? As a host, always ask for an RSVP on the invitations, but do not be surprised if you don’t receive one. To encourage an RSVP, include a deadline on the invitations for when you would like to hear back from your potential guests. As a potential guest, it is important to RSVP to any invitation, but for a child’s birthday party often more is at stake. Knowing how many guests to expect helps the host plan accordingly. By RSVPing that you and/or your child will attend, you are telling the parent that they should buy accordingly for your child’s presence and you are telling the birthday girl or boy that one of his/her friends will be there to share in their special day. If you are the host of your child’s birthday party, it is acceptable to phone invited guests who have not RSVP’d by your deadline. However, do not use the conversation to lecture your potential guests. Get the information you need for planning purposes and keep any complaints about etiquette to yourself. 6 | April 2012 | thehoodmagazine.com

Average amount spent on a child’s birthday party? How much is appropriate to spend on my child’s party? This question has crossed the mind of any adult who has attempted to throw an annual birthday bash. It is possible to throw a memorable and enjoyable birthday party on a budget, whether that means less than $20 or $400+. As local event planner Jessica Kerher of Serendipitous Events says, “You can find ways to do things that look over the top but don’t cost a lot of money.” Often the word budget leaves a negative impression, but it does not have to mean cheap or tacky.

Average number of guests? A good number of kids to have in attendance is anywhere from less than five to fifteen or more, as long as there are enough adults and hands to help. If you are worried about managing a larger number of children by yourself, invite other adults to stay. It’s also important to consider whether you and your child want just your child’s friends to attend, or if you also want to invite your relatives and friends of the family.

Decorations

by Hannah Weise

When planning the decorations for your child’s party, you have to decide how much time you want to spend decorating and how much your time is worth. Do it yourself projects, if done well, look like they take a lot of time because they often do. Therefore, you must have patience. For example, one family working with Serendipitous Events wanted to host a fashion show birthday party for their little girl but did not want to pay for a rented red carpet. Instead they made one by cutting up red plastic tablecloths and taping them to the floor with zebra duct tape. It might be worth spending extra money to have someone else help you plan in order to have a party that is organized and looks good. The location of the party may determine a lot of your decorating decisions for you. If the location is unique or special to your child, you may only need to do minimal decorating. Jessica from Serendipitous Events suggests remembering that simple items like balloons are an affordable way to jazz up almost any party location. Hosting the party at your home is one way to keep costs lower, but it is becoming increasingly popular to host the party elsewhere. As an added bonus, you will not have to clean beforehand if your guests will not see your home, and many party locations help with the post-party cleaning.

Birthday PartyIDEAS

by Stephanie Spaan , Excel Achievement Center

Whether your child is young or old, themed birthday parties are always a great hit! The best part is that for a very minimal fee, parent can order entire themed kits online— some kits are even free! Here are a few fun theme ideas and websites to help make your child’s birthday party one that they’ll remember for a very long time! YOUNGER CHILDREN • Cowboy theme (www.kidsmysteryparties.co.uk) With cowboy hats only costing a dollar at The Dollar Store, every child can be given their own hat as they enter. Children will play games like “cattle drive”, “bronco relay” and “stick a star on the sheriff.” Finger lickin’ foods include: sarsaparilla(rootbeer), fried chicken, corn, and don’t forget those beans! Hang a sign that says “Chow Wagon” by the food and call the kiddos over by banging a pan with a spoon. • Pirates and Princesses (http://www.princessandpirate. com/) Have children come to the party dressed for the part. Games such as wizard tag, jelly bean races, and building mazes with large blocks are all part of the fun. Go on a “fairy walk” or “treasure hunt” to find hidden treasures in the yard. Have the children make their own magical houses with graham crackers, frosting, and lots of candy, or simply

serve licorice wands and rice crispy crystal balls with a magic treat inside. • Scooby Doo Mystery Party (www.birthdaypartyideas.com/html/scooby.html) Play drop the Scooby snack in the jar or have a gelatin eating contest by placing a bowl of Jell-o in front of each child. Tell them they have to eat like Scooby does…no hands! Have the kiddos wrap each other like mummies using toilet tissue and have them run a relay race…may the best mummy win! Children can write secret messages with white crayons on paper and then paint over them with water colors to reveal their secret message. Serve Scooby Dogs in a blanket (hot dogs wrapped in crescent rolls), puppy chow, and satisfying punch for slurping! OLDER CHILDREN My favorite theme for older children and teens is a Murder Mystery Party. There are many different websites, but my favorite is www.nightofmystery.com. Your teen will begin by sending out the invitations that are provided in the kit to his/her guests. Each guest will come dressed for the part! The kit instructs you how to decorate, gives all materials and scripts for the party, and gives you menu choices that can be very elaborate or quite simple. Have Fun! n April 2012 | thehoodmagazine.com | 13

So You Are Planning

A PARTY

by Taryn Sonnenfeld

What better way to celebrate your child’s life than to throw a Birthday Party! At least that’s what you told yourself right? Now the blessed day is here and your space if filled with tons of people, you’ve spent hours making refreshments and a cake worthy of a contest (you know you can’t just make a regular cake anymore, cake is art these days!) You set it aflame, turn the lights off and everyone in their own special tune wholeheartedly sings “Happy Birthday” to your little one.

As you look at your child, just for a moment, it sinks in…they are one year older, this precious time is flying by. Their eyes are like saucers and they’re smiling ear to ear, ready to make the biggest wish of their life on those flaming candles. Face it, Birthdays are wonderful :) How much fun to base an entire issue theme on Birthday Parties, not just because everyone loves a party, but because we ultimately believe, life deserves to be celebrated! We met with two local families and got their inspiration and ideas for children’s parties. Enjoy getting to know them and the pictures from their recent family events. Hopefully they will inspire you to celebrate life in new and exciting ways. What bigger gift could you give to your children and to yourself? Story Continued on next page...

FA M I LY H O O D

Berdahl Family by Hannah Weise Basic Family Info John (Dad), Tamme (Mom), Tommy 4.5, Anabel 1.5 How much is appropriate to spend on a birthday party for a child? “I think birthday parties shouldn’t be about the money or about trying to impress people. It’s about making a memory for your kids,” Tamme states. She has hosted birthday parties in the past where she made everything she possibly could, but she also enjoys the advantages holding the party outside the home can offer. Ultimately, “It’s more about the memories than it is about the cost.” How many kids should be invited to the party? For a party in the home, Tamme suggests keeping the guest list at eight or fewer children. Too many children can be difficult to supervise alone. For a well-prepared location outside the home, she says, “The sky is the limit.” The number of guests you should invite depends on your budget and how many friends your child wants to invite. A larger venue can support more children. However, when you have parties outside the home, you often pay more for invitations, favors, decorations, and food. Do children play a role in planning the party? “Absolutely! I try to have them involved as much as possible,” Tamme says. The level of involvement depends on the ages of the children. For her daughter Anabel’s second birthday, Tamme is thinking about basing the party’s theme on rainbows, one of Anabel’s favorite things. She is already talking to Tommy about his next birthday party. At what age do you stop throwing birthday parties . . . or do you? “I love entertaining, so there probably won’t be a birthday that won’t be celebrated in our house,” Tamme states. As her kids get older, the parties will change to be age appropriate. Her children will play a larger role in planning their parties as they get older. “It’s so important to feel special on your 22 | April 2012 | thehoodmagazine.com

birthday, and it’s so nice if someone honors you, especially without being asked. It makes you feel loved,” Tamme says. How else do you celebrate life with your children? Tamme’s favorite way to celebrate life with her children is through a gratitude book she keeps in her office. “Any time my kids say something funny or I want to journal about them, I write down quotes of things they’ve said in my book with the date,” Tamme explains. She also records prayers and other positive memories. In addition to the gratitude book, the Berdahl family annually orders a family photo “yearbook” online. Both Anabel and Tommy also go on individual “date nights” with one or both of their parents on a regular basis. Most Recent Birthday Party The Berdahl family had a superhero-themed party for Tommy when he turned four. Tamme tried to keep the theme generic so that the kids were free to use their imaginations and create their own superhero. They held the party at Wings Gymnastics Academy where, upon arriving, each of the sixteen kids present had to go through an obstacle course for “superhero training.” Upon successful completion, each child received his or her own cape and mask. Everyone was then given some free time to further enjoy the obstacle course. John, Tamme’s husband, wore a costume complete with a black cape so that the kids would have a villain to chase. An older sibling of one of the guests also donned black attire and played the part of a bad guy. For party favors, the children were given a glow sword, stickers, suckers, and snacks. Tamme served superhero ropes (licorice) and superhero sandwiches (Oreos), attached small capes to each sucker, made star-shaped rice krispie treats, and gave each child a bottle of water with superheroes taped to the outside. At the end of the party, each child received an award with their superhero name and special power listed on the certificate. At the end of the party, the only cleaning Tamme had to do was to clear the tables.

Rens Family

by Hannah Weise

Basic Family Info Mark (Dad), Gretchen (Mom), Gracie 10, Gillian 7, Gibson 4, Gemma 2 How much is appropriate to spend on a birthday party for a child? Gretchen estimates that, on average, it is appropriate to spend between $200-$300 for a birthday party. How many kids should be invited to the party? It depends on the type of party you are hosting, but Gretchen suggests between seven and ten children, including the birthday child. Do children play a role in planning the party? “Of course! I usually let them pick out their invitations, which determines the party theme,” Gretchen says. Her family usually orders invitations through the Vistaprint website. Her children also help pick out party favors and decorations and assist with the actual decorating. At what age do you stop throwing birthday parties . . . or do you? “Right around twelve or thirteen is probably when I would stop, only because by then they usually don’t want to do the same kind of birthday celebration they did when they were younger,” Gretchen states.

How else do you celebrate life with your children? “We have pizza every Friday night, usually that and a movie if there are not other activities,” Gretchen says. The most important thing in their family is to spend time together, and family togetherness is encouraged and enjoyed at every opportunity. Most Recent Birthday Party The Rens family had a day spa themed party for Gillian’s seventh birthday. Gretchen asked a few of her friends, who work as stylists, to come over and help with the party. The girls each had their fingernails and toes painted and had pink hair extensions put in their hair. The Rens family held the party in what Gretchen calls their “obnoxiously” large bathroom with “room for twenty” and lots of counter space. Gretchen set up different stations on the counter, each containing different goodies. She purchased items such as hand sanitizers, nail polish, custom chapsticks, a hair clip, bottled water, and a pair of slippers with felt flowers sewn on for each girl. She also made each girl a personalized bag with a cartoon picture of the girl wearing a spa robe to put the favors into. Gretchen held the party around 9 am and served a brunch buffet consisting of cereal, bagels and cream cheese, and milk. She also served cake, pop, and cotton candy as a snack.

Heat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 2 quart casserole or spray with nonstick cooking spray. Wash chicken and pat dry. Sprinkle the chicken all over with salt and pepper. Combine the drained beans, corn, 1 c. of salsa, green chile peppers, and half of the cilantro. Put the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Arrange chicken over the bean and corn mixture, then spoon the remaining salsa over the chicken. Sprinkle with the remaining cilantro and top evenly with the cheese. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for 10 minutes, or until chicken is tender and juices run clear.

ON A BUDGET

by Shaina Herrmann, ShainasDeals.com

Some of my favorite childhood memories are my birthday parties! What made them so memorable was not the decorations, the location, or even the presents; it was the time spent with friends and family and the joy from celebrating a new year of life! Celebrating birthdays is all about having fun. Fun does not need to throw your budget off course. Here are several tips to help you create a fun and memorable party while still sticking to a budget! • Make invitations or have your child make them. They will become memorable keepsakes and save you some money at the same time. You could also opt to send free e-invites! • Check sites like Craigslist for party decorations and tableware! Once a party is over, a lot of decorations often go into the trash. Some people choose to try to re-sell or even give them away on Craigslist. • When it comes to food and drinks you could try making strawberry lemonade rather than purchasing sodas, and in place of several snacks and treats, just stick with the essentials - cake and ice cream.

• Bake your own cake or cupcakes and do your own decorating. Not only will the cake taste better, but it is a fun activity to do with your kids and significantly cheaper. • If you decide to go with a lot of decorations, mix generic decor with the more expensive themed decor. For example, Sponge Bob themed plates with generic yellow napkins and cups. If you really want to save, buy reusable generic tableware and decor. These will last you several years! • Giftbags: If you like to send something home with the kids, rather than filling goodie bags send each child home with one small gift or candy bar. You save money and they still get to go home with something fun! Organize a scavenger hunt or a put together a talent show! Games are fun, memorable, and they don’t need to cost you a cent.
