Family Camping: Worth the Work
Going camping with a young family might seem like a daunting task, but the rewards far outweigh the challenges! The outdoors is such a great teacher for all of us, but especially for youth. Providing my kids with the chance to play and explore in an outdoor setting allows them to gain confidence in themselves and experience new things. We all benefit from the fresh air and sunshine, and I’ve noticed my kids are much happier when we spend time outside.
Is going camping with my young family difficult? Of course! The logistics of safe sleep, clean clothing, bottles, milk/formula, and everything else that comes with small kids are still there. In many ways, some of those logistics are magnified in the outdoors! But the work is worth it. I get to see my children learning and exploring, and we make amazing family memories.
If you want to start camping with your family this summer, here are some things to keep in mind.
The first is to start small! The first trip is always the hardest. Once
you figure out systems that work for your family, it becomes much more manageable. Don’t feel the need to go to some grand location either. Start small at a nearby state park where you can always run back home if you forget something (been there!).
Secondly, don’t compare your time outside with anyone else. Sometimes, I feel like an imposter in the outdoors when I see people on social media do things like backpack for miles with small children. It’s okay if your camping experience looks different than
someone else’s! The goal is to get outside and enjoy time as a family. It does not have to be a perfect camping experience to be worth it.
Lastly, go with the flow. Sometimes, my kids only eat goldfish and s’mores. Sometimes, they don’t go to bed until almost 10 p.m. The memories we are making are far more important than a weekend of perfect nutrition and schedules. So, grab your gear, embrace the adventure, and have a blast with your little ones in the great outdoors.

Foley’s Heating & AC Inc. Travis Ball Vice PresidentHow do I prepare my Air Conditioner for the summer?
Proper preventive maintenance is required to increase the life and efficient operation of your air conditioning system. Consider the following:
• Trimming bushes and vegetation around the outdoor unit.
• Cleaning of debris from the outdoor unit.
• Proper cleaning of the coil on the outdoor unit.
• Inspection of the electrical on the condensing unit.
• Replacement of the filter on the unit inside.
• Inspection of the inside coil for the AC system.
These are some broad highlights that touch base on the important items needed. Some systems will require more in-depth inspections and/or maintenance requirements than others. A thorough checkup of your AC system every year is best for the longest life.

Rachel Martens Regional Victim Services ManagerWhat is substance-impaired driving?
Substance-impaired driving goes beyond just alcohol. There’s also drugged driving, such as marijuana or other illicit drugs. Additionally, prescription medication and some over-thecounter medication, can classify someone as being impaired while operating a vehicle.
How can I help end substanceimpaired driving?
Substance-impaired driving is 100% preventable. Wearing a seatbelt, using public transport, utilizing rideshare apps, and taking personal responsibility for safe roadways are all crucial steps in ending this tragedy. The crashes, injuries, and deaths of our loved ones won’t stop unless we act together. It starts with YOU!

FUN CRUISE
Join the Fun!
We love that the Familyfest Fun Cruise provides families with the chance to discover new opportunities here in the Sioux Empire. The Familyfest Fun Cruise has something for everyone! Maybe you are a newcomer to the area and looking for information on family-friendly activities, or you are a parent of growing children on the lookout for new opportunities. With something for everyone, we are confident that you will have a great time!
Join the Fun!
Liz and Brandon Wittrock’s family has been taking part in the Familyfest Fun Cruise since it started! We asked them why they love Familyfest and to give us their best tips for doing the Fun Cruise with a younger family.
Why does your family enjoy participating in the Familyfest Fun Cruise?
We love to support our local businesses and discover new things to see and do! My kids have also inherited my luck when it comes to giveaways, and the joy of freebies can’t be beat. As the years have gone on, it’s been so fun to run into our friends while we are out and about as well!
What are your tips and tricks for participating in Familyfest with younger children?
With the current set up of Familyfest having multiple “core” zones around town for activities - if you are going with younger kiddos I would definitely suggest choosing one (or two) of those clusters to enjoy and not try to set out to hit everywhere! Let the kids take their time enjoying the activities the businesses and organizations have put so much time and thought into!
Why should other families join in on the Cruise this year?
Aren’t you always looking for something cheap, fun and new to do?! Let ‘hood and Familyfest make it simple! Not only will you have this day covered, you’ll come away with so many more ideas of things to do and places to go for the rest of the summer (and beyond)!

Minimize Screens Maximize FUN!
School is out for summer! While this long-awaited break can bring pool days, camps, vacations, and neighborhood play, it can also mean a lack of routine and possibly more screen time. So how can you ensure your child’s summer is filled with less screens and more fun?! Keep reading for expert-backed tips!
Step 1: Discover the recommended amount of screen time for your child. Here are the American Academy of Pediatrics’ newest recommendations:
<18 Months
18-24 Months
2-5 Years
6+ Years
Tweens & Teens
Avoid screens (other than video-chatting).
Limit screen time to only introducing them to occasional educational pieces.
Limit screen time to 1 hour per day while co-viewing media.
No set limit, but place consistent limits on time using media, types of media, and where media usage is taking place.
No set limit but engage in conversation with your kids about their media use and who they are communicating with.
Step 2: As a family, make a plan!
• When can your child use a screen? (after play time, before/after meals)
• Where can a screen be used? (in a family room but avoid bedrooms)
• What shows or apps are approved?
Step 3: Create a list of screen-free activities everyone can reference when there’s “nothing to do.” Here are a few of our fit favorites!
• Paint/Color/Draw
• Crafts
• Build with Duplos/Magna-tiles/Legos
• Act Out Stories or Skits
• Write Letters to Friends or Family Get Creative
• Ride Bikes
• Go on a Nature Hike or Neighborhood Walk
• Play a Sport
• Dance
• Create a Backyard Obstacle Course Move Your Body
• Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt
• Sidewalk Chalk
• Water Balloon T-ball/Baseball
• Blow Bubbles
• Have a Picnic Take It Outside
• Listen to Music
• Do a Puzzle
• Read a Book
• Practice Deep Breathing
• Yoga Relax & Recharge
