THE IMPORTANCE OF

Educators

I’m excited to celebrate our 12th year of the Educator of the Year (EDOY) award! We are truly fortunate to have such dedicated and passionate educators in our schools and childcare centers, who work tirelessly to shape the leaders of tomorrow. These educators teach not for the pay or recognition, but because of their deep passion for teaching and their genuine love for their students. Our 2025 EDOY winner is Holly Peterson, a beloved kindergarten teacher in Tea.

In 2023, we introduced our Preschool/Childcare Provider of the Year Award, recognizing the critical role these providers play in shaping young minds during their early years. As childcare becomes harder to find, these dedicated professionals are more important than ever. This year’s winner, Jenny Maier, truly embodies the qualities highlighted in her nominations. When we visited her at Kids ‘R’ Kids, it was clear she is making a remarkable impact on her students. To learn more about our EDOY and Preschool/Childcare Provider of the Year winners, check out page 26.

Don’t miss our comprehensive education guide! Inside, you’ll find information on local childcare, preschool, private schools, tutoring services, and lesson options. Be sure to visit our website for the full list of educational opportunities in the area!

MoreThanChildcare:

A Family’s Journey of Growth, Support, and Community at Kids ‘R’ Kids

For us, Kids ‘R’ Kids has been more than just a childcare center—it has been a place of growth, support, and community. We loved that Kids ‘R’ Kids could accommodate all three of our daughters, offering care for our 2 and 4-year-olds and after-school transportation for our 5-year-old. The convenience of having them all in one place made Kids ‘R’ Kids the perfect fit.

A Trusted Partner in Our Children’s Growth

One of the most meaningful aspects has been the warm and welcoming presence of the team members. From leadership greeting our girls by name to our youngest stopping to say good morning to Ms. Tammy, it’s clear the relationships formed here are genuine.

Support Through Life’s Transitions

Kids ‘R’ Kids has supported our family in countless ways. When Ashley was mobilized to Texas for six months, the center provided full-time, after-school, and summer care for our children. The team was especially attentive, ensuring our girls felt supported and loved. Knowing our children are in a safe, nurturing environment is invaluable.

Moments That Matter

One day, our 4-year-old had a tough morning and arrived at Kids ‘R’ Kids in tears. Ms. Kathy immediately stepped in, showing genuine concern and finding a way to comfort her. This is just one of many examples

of how the teachers are attentive to each child’s needs.

Enriching Programs & Activities

Kids ‘R’ Kids offers a variety of programs, from Soccer Sprouts and Tumble Bus to special events like Trunk or Treat and the Christmas Concert. The Watch Me Grow app gave us peace of mind during our transition from in-home daycare, and now it’s fun to check in and see our youngest engaged in activities.

Why We Choose Kids ‘R’ Kids

We have remained at Kids ‘R’ Kids because they have adapted to every transition our family has faced while providing a consistent, high-quality learning environment.

For families considering enrollment, we highly recommend Kids ‘R’ Kids. Their curriculum fosters hands-on learning, and their dedicated teachers and leadership genuinely love caring for children, making it an incredible place for any child to grow. l

LEARN TO SWIM WITH PURPOSE The SafeSplash Difference

SafeSplash recommends that self-rescue be the initial goal of swim lessons. Why is it so crucial for your child to learn how to selfrescue in water? Because drowning is the leading cause of death in children ages 1-4, and the second leading cause in ages 5-14.

DID YOU KNOW?

Distracted Adults are present at a high percentage of drownings.

Over half of drownings occur during non-swim times (like walking near a pond)

The National Drowning Prevention Alliance has partnered with SafeSplash for their S.A.F.E.R Swimmer Promise.

SafeSplash is committed to helping children learn how to effectively selfrescue. Their S.A.F.E.R Swimmer Promise is dedicated to helping your child pass their Self-Rescue test in 1 Year or less. If they cannot pass the skills listed, they will keep learning for free

SafeSplash organizes its swim lessons around a progressive 4C’s framework that supports each swimmer’s unique needs. The lessons are designed to be impactful for growth and fun for the students. The 4C’s (Comfortable, Capable, Confident, Competitive) help parents know where their child is at in their journey.

Drowning is silent and can happen in less than 30 seconds

Celebrating Excellence :

Behind every child’s growth and success are the educators and childcare providers who dedicate their time, energy, and hearts to guiding them. These remarkable individuals do more than teach—they inspire curiosity, nurture confidence, and create spaces where children feel safe, supported, and excited to learn.

“ Based off provided submissions, it’s evident these classrooms are spaces where kids not only feel safe, but are valued, and empowered to be their best and unique selves. Sanford fit is honored to celebrate these amazing winners for all they do in being and creating a safe space for kids.”

2025 Educator of the Year

Holly Peterson’s school and Tea Area Parent Teacher Organization know how to put on a celebration, and when ‘hood Magazine, along with The Bancorp, Sanford fit, and Solis Photography, arrived to surprise her with the 2025 Educator of the Year award, the excitement was electric. The elementary school was excited to celebrate a teacher whose passion and dedication have made a lasting impact.

A dedicated kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Peterson has always felt at home in the classroom. “I have always felt comfortable in a teaching role; it feels natural to me,” she shared. “When I was growing up with my two sisters, we played school a lot, but I was always the teacher!” That passion has carried through to her career, where she works tirelessly to create a welcoming and engaging learning

environment for her young students. Kindergarten can be an unpredictable grade to teach, and Mrs. Peterson says that every day is filled with stand-out moments! “One day, it might be a student learning to tie their own shoelaces and another day, it might be a child trying a hot lunch at school for the first time.”

“Winning Nomination

I am honored to nominate Holly Peterson for this well-deserved Educator of the Year Award. As both of my son’s Kindergarten teachers, she has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to not only academic excellence but also the emotional, social, and mental well-being of her students. She is a compassionate leader, an unwavering advocate for children, and a true inspiration in the classroom. She understands that education is not just about teaching letters and numbers—it’s about fostering confidence, resilience, and a love for learning that will stay with her students for a lifetime. She is a true role model, a champion for children, and an invaluable asset to the education community.”

ChildcareProvider of the Year and

Jenny Maier, 18-24 Month Teacher Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Prairie Hills

Choosing a childcare provider is a big choice for many families. Finding one who loves your child well is an incredible gift. Here at the ‘hood Magazine, we know the value of childcare providers, and we are pleased to announce, along with our sponsors, The Bancorp, Sanford fit, and Solis Photography, our 2025 Childcare Provider of the Year, Jenny Maier!

Winning Nomination

“ I am nominating Ms. Jenny because she is an extraordinary educator whose dedication, kindness, and passion truly set her apart. Ms. Jenny’s commitment to caring for children goes far beyond the classroom. Ms. Jenny is more than just a teacher—she is a positive influence, a guiding light, and a source of comfort and learning for so many children and families. My child has flourished in her class, learning to speak in phrases and expanding his vocabulary in ways that have amazed us.”

Elisa (Mom), and Rome

Jenny works with the 18-24 month olds at Kids’ R’ Kids of Prairie Hills. She is no stranger to childcare and has worked in childcare for 28 years! She chose a career in early childhood education because of her grandmother, who was a teacher and her greatest

during the surprise was a basket filled with sensory

Jenny shared with us what this award means to her. “It feels so good to be recognized for the love and dedication I give to “my kids” every day. I am so grateful to be able to do what I love,” she said. “I love every hug I get, and I mean every hug I give. “

We’ve had a great experience with our daughter’s care, but no one has impacted her experience as much as Ms. Jenny. When our daughter transitioned to Ms. Jenny’s room we noticed an immediate change in her demeanor and, more importantly, in her milestones. She quickly began talking in two- to three- word sentences, suddenly knew her colors and numbers, as well as words for objects we have never discussed at home. Our daughter developed a bond with Ms. Jenny that has persisted despite her age-related transition to another room. We are so grateful Ms. Jenny has been able to be a consistent source of comfort and love for our daughter while we are away from her.”

A Clear Path to Confidence:

Vision Therapy at Visions Eye Care + Therapy Center

When Hendrix Halbersma began struggling in kindergarten, his parents, Kayci and Matt, were eager to find answers. Hendrix was falling behind in reading, writing, and comprehension. Simple tasks like copying from the board became daily challenges. His teacher observed that there might be a disconnect between what Hendrix saw and how his brain processes the information. This was the first step towards vision therapy.

Vision Therapy

A trusted friend recommended Visions Eye Care + Therapy Center. After an initial assessment with Dr. Ashley Gentrup, it became clear that vision therapy could significantly impact Hendrix. The evaluation process was detailed and informative, and for Kayci, it was also emotional. “Hearing that your child doesn’t learn like a ‘typical’ child can be overwhelming,” she shares. “But Dr. Gentrup reassured us that we were in the right place and that we had done nothing wrong as parents.”

Hendrix’s therapy journey began with weekly sessions with his dedicated therapist, Brenda. From the start, Brenda’s compassion and expertise stood out. She tailored each activity to Hendrix’s learning style and made homework both fun and purposeful. “He never complained,” says Kayci. “Working hard for Miss Brenda was so important to him.”

Vision Therapy Graduate

The results of vision therapy have been incredible. Hendrix’s reading fluency and comprehension have improved. His handwriting is exponentially neater, along with a huge improvement in fine motor skills. Not only has Hendrix shown gains in measurable skills, but his confidence has soared. His attitude about school has changed; he even plays school at home! “He’s gone from a lot of negative self-talk to saying positive affirmations daily,” says Kayci.

The Halbersmas wholeheartedly encourage others to look into therapy at Visions Eye Care + Therapy Center. “Every single staff member we encountered at Visions was top-notch. These are people who love what they are doing, and it shows. We are extremely pleased with the results!” Their story shows how the right support can unlock a child’s full potential.

If your child is struggling, Visions Eye Care + Therapy Center could be the partner your family needs. l

It’s More Than Art Classes;

It's Building a Community

Mosaic is where creativity and community come together in Sioux Falls. It’s a living, breathing canvas where echoes of past joy blend with the anticipation of future celebrations. Every event is a work of art, every class an inspiration, and every visitor an artist adding their brushstroke to a collective masterpiece.

At Mosaic, we come together to create, celebrate, and learn in a space that is as diverse and vibrant as our community. Let’s meet Anna Hudelson, Mosaic’s loyal and dedicated Education Director of 11+ years.

What inspired you to become an art educator?

Growing up as a creative girl, I found a sense of belonging in the art class at school. When I enrolled at USD, I was first interested in graphic design. As I continued my education, I learned I wanted to create and connect with students through art, not be behind a computer.

You’ve been with Mosaic for 11 + years; what continues to inspire you?

Seeing my students, whether adults or children, take pride in the art that they have created continues to deepen my passion for art education. Facilitating a

safe and creative experience along with a welcoming atmosphere is a job I do not take lightly. It’s more than art classes; it’s building a community.

What are your favorite materials to work with or favorite classes to teach?

My favorite materials include air-dry clay, oil pastels, acrylic paint, and recycled or repurposed materials that have been donated. I love all the classes I teach! Paint and Create is an open art classroom, and it is so fun to see the participants create projects out of scrapbook paper, old jewelry, and clay. In other classes, I incorporate a children’s book about an artist. We then create something inspired by them, their art style, or art movements.

Where do you hope to see Mosaic Art Classroom in 5 years?

I am excited to continue developing both our new pottery wheel program and our creative art classes for children and adults of all abilities.

At Mosaic, we come together to create, celebrate, and learn in a space that is as diverse and vibrant as our community. l

Birth-5 Program Lead Librarian

What makes libraries so special for children for fostering a love of reading?

Storytimes: Each of our 13 locations has storytimes and special programs for kids to make reading interactive and fun through reading, writing, talking, singing, and playing.

Learning Programs: Siouxland Libraries is a Registered Family Place Library and offers parenting workshops and kindergarten readiness programs to teach literacy.

More than books: We have lots of resources for early learners like WonderBooks, audiobooks, board games, ParentTV, and toy checkouts through the Toy Lending Library. Also, meet other parents in the same stage of life at the library!

Sioux Falls Zoo & Aquarium

Dr. Jenny Clementson Zoo Veterinarian

How do you x-ray different zoo animals??

The zoo has three different x-ray machines:

• A digital tabletop x-ray unit for everything from an armadillo to a bear

• A large portable x-ray unit that we bring to larger animals, like giraffes

• A smaller dental x-ray unit for detailed images like a tiger root canal or a frog

Some animals must be sedated to get the images we need. Others are scanned awake with a little creativity - like our chameleon that stood on a scrub brush for his x-ray! Also, we have to use special tape on birds, so we can fully extend their wings and legs without damaging their feathers.
