SIOUX EMPIRE’S FAMILY RESOURCE

inside Meet Cover Model Bella

A SIMPLE SCREENING FOR TYPE 1 DIABETES AND CELIAC

Sanford Health would like to invite your child to participate in a screening research study. Through Sanford PLEDGE, we hope to identify children at higher risk of developing type 1 diabetes (T1D) and celiac disease and intervene early to prevent serious illness.

Your child may qualify to join the study if they:

Are ages 0–5 or ages 9–16

Do not have T1D

Children ages 6 to 17 who have a sibling with T1D or T1D antibodies may also join the study.

Ask your provider or care team about the PLEDGE screening study. Visit sanfordhealth.org/PLEDGE or call (877) 878-4825 to join the free study or learn more about PLEDGE.

WHY FAMILYFEST IS

Worth the Drive

Last summer, we loaded up our crew of little ones and spent the day cruising around Sioux Falls for Familyfest. It was our first year participating in the cruise, and even though getting kids in and out of car seats all day doesn’t sound like most people’s idea of fun, we had the best time.

One of our favorite stops was Silverstar Car Wash. Not only did Albert and I get a free car wash (always a win), but our toddler got to pick out a toy car, get it dirty, and then wash it. He thought that was the absolute coolest thing ever. Another huge hit was the Touch-a-Truck stop! The free swag bag at The Outdoor Campus was also a bonus!

Cruise the Way Your Family Wants

What made the day work for us was keeping it relaxed. We had a list of places we wanted to check out, but we didn’t stress about hitting them all. If the kids were enjoying a stop, we just let them

play and didn’t worry about the clock. With little ones, that kind of flexibility is key.

One unexpected highlight was stopping at Sensory Studio. It wasn’t a place we had been before, and they had so many fun activities outside for the kids to explore. That’s something I really appreciated about the cruise—it introduced us to businesses we might not have thought to visit otherwise.

Summer Highlight

Familyfest was one of the highlights of our summer. We loved cruising around Sioux Falls together, exploring local businesses, and participating in all of their fun

activities. It was a great reason to get out of the house for some free family fun!

We’ll definitely be doing the cruise again this year, and I’d absolutely recommend it to other families—yes, even the ones with babies and toddlers. Pack some snacks, adjust your expectations, and go with the flow. The flexibility to choose your own stops allows you to make the cruise relaxed and fun for your whole family.

We love the Familyfest Fun Cruise because we love Sioux Falls and everything it offers families. We can’t wait to see what new stops we discover this time around! l

Meet Our Familyfest Fun Cruise Cover Star:

Bella

Bella and her family have attended the Familyfest Fun Cruise for the last few years and look forward to it each year. We asked Bella and her family about their favorite stops, top tips for the Fun Cruise, and to share why they think other families should participate in Familyfest!

What are Some of Your Favorite Stops from Past Years?

The Touch-a-Truck stop, getting free ice-cream from Stenslands, and fishing at the Outdoor Campus have been some of our favorite stops. Getting the free swag bag is also a favorite each year!

What are Your Tips for Other Families on the Fun Cruise?

To make the most of your FamilyFest cruise, start early and plan your route ahead of time! Use the event map to group together locations that are close to each other. Prioritize the stops your family is most excited about, and don’t forget to leave room for a few surprises along the way!

My favorite part of Familyfest is going to all the different businesses and doing the fun activities they have. It’s like a little adventure at every stop!”

Don’t forget to check out the Familyfest and ‘hood social media pages leading up to the event for more information and giveaways, too!

Why Should Families Attend Familyfest?

Families should attend because it’s a fun adventure the whole family can enjoy together! It gets you out of the house and cruising around town to discover local businesses you might not know about. Kids will love the activities and surprises along the way, and parents get the chance to explore new spots and connect with the community. It’s a great way to make memories while supporting local! l

FUNCRUISE

From 9am-2pm on May 31st, families can spend the day together cruising to area businesses and organizations to participate in activities, enter to win prizes, and get some deals!

Does our family have to cruise to all the locations listed or in any specific order? No! Your family can go to as many or as few stops as you would like and in any order! Many families will start at the swag bag location, The Outdoor Campus, and then head to the stops that interest their family! At Bishop O’Gorman High School is the Touch-A-Truck, sponsored by Knife River! Learn safety tips with the South Dakota Safety Council too! Pick whatever stops your family is interested in.You are in control of your family’s cruising experience!

Wait, did you say The Outdoor Campus? Yes, the swag bag location is The Outdoor Campus! Not only will you be able to pick up your swag bag here, but you can also enjoy some free fishing! How do I know what stops might fit our family? Our listings, starting on page 32, will have a colored dot to signify what age groups these stops might cater to. Use the key at the top of the listings to search for the perfect stops for your family.

What is the cost of the Familyfest Fun Cruise?

Absolutely nothing! It’s true! The Familyfest Fun Cruise is completely free for all families participating. Some stops may have additional items/services available for purchase, but there is no purchase required to visit each stop.

What is the Familyfest Fun Cruise Digital Passport? At each stop location, there will be a QR Code for your family to scan. When you scan the code, you will be asked to enter your name, email, and answer a question about that stop. Every time you scan a different QR Code and answer the question, you will earn one entry into our Familyfest Fun Cruise drawings.

We saved the best for last! Want to cruise in style? Through May 26th, you can enter to win one of the two “Cruising to Family Fun” giveaway packages from our friends at Voyage Federal Credit Union. Included is 2 hours cruising the Familyfest Fun Cruise in a limo from SuFu Cruise for your family (up to 12 people), along with goodies and a Familyfest swag bag. Your limo will take you to any Familyfest Fun Cruise stops that you desire for 2 hours while you get to sit back and enjoy the time with your family! Head over to thehoodmagazine.com/familyfest to fill out the simple form for your chance to win one of these two packages. l
